Before we get to the list, I just want to say, please don’t feel like you can’t participate in a stitchalong based on how fast you stitch or how much time you have to stitch. Stitch at your own pace, enjoy the pattern, and don’t worry about keeping up with other stitchers. It’s more about the community feeling and the fun of the pattern than the time in which you stitch the piece. I have SAL patterns (free and paid) from previous years that I haven’t even started the actual stitching on yet, but I enjoyed watching the pattern pieces come together and seeing progress photos in the community. It’s okay to not “keep up” as long as you’re enjoying the journey.

I know that not everyone considers these stitchalongs, but I think they still count, some have Facebook groups or Instagram hashtags to follow along with, and they’re fun to work on, so I like to include them here as well. Of course, this is also not a complete list, just a sampling, and there are always more patterns to be discovered out there.

The idea for temperature patterns is a little section of stitching for each day of the year and the color of thread is based on your local outdoor temperature on that day. Some projects use the average for the day, others use the high and the low for two bits of stitching per day. It’s a fun project and everyone’s result will be different, and of course each year’s stitch will also vary based on the weather.

In maker and crafter groups, we’re always hearing stories about exactly that where creators are mistakenly suspended or even hacked, and they lose access to the accounts they’ve built up over time. If you’ve been online with your creative business for a while, you might remember hearing about the “shadow ban” in regard to Etsy and Instagram accounts. 

For many crafters and artists, this is more than an inconvenience, it’s a crisis. When you rely on social media to reach your customers, you’re building your business on borrowed ground. Social platforms are powerful, but they’re not permanent. That’s why having your own email list is one of the smartest, most sustainable choices you can make for your creative business to stay in touch with your community.

Your List Is a Lifeline to Your Community

When you build your email list, you’re creating a direct connection to your community.

You own it.
Your email list belongs to you. No matter what happens to your social channels or online shop, those customer connections are yours to keep.

It’s timeless.
Platforms come and go (remember Vine or MySpace?), but email is still where people make decisions, build trust, and buy. Your subscribers will see your messages and sales, even when they’re taking a break from social media platforms. (We all need that mental break from the constant stream of information sometimes.)

It’s personal.
Email feels like a conversation between friends, not a broadcast. That’s where real relationships with your buyers grow. Including things like sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes about how you create can make that connection even stronger. 

It’s powerful for sales.
Studies show email marketing often generates higher conversion rates than social media because subscribers have already said, “I want to hear from you.”

Your Action Step

Take your first foundational step: ownership.

Create your first email list. Don’t worry about attracting hundreds of people right away, just focus on setting up the space. 
Write your personal “Why.” Take five minutes to finish this sentence:
 “I want to grow my email list because…”

Keep that note near your workspace. When you’re tired, discouraged, or distracted by trends, your WHY will bring you back to what matters.

A Moment of Reflection…

Ask yourself:

If my main social channel disappeared tomorrow, what would I lose? 
How could having a direct line to my customers make running my handmade business easier? 
What kind of value (stories, offers, inspiration) could I share consistently through email?

Write your answers down. Reflect on them as your first step toward independence and stability as a maker-entrepreneur. If you want to go even further here, try creating three to five goals of what you want to accomplish with your list and how you want to serve your community. These goals will guide your strategy and remind you that every subscriber is a person, not just a number.

Materials and Tools Required for Cross Stitch and Needlepoint

The materials and tools required for cross stitch and needlepoint are similar in some ways, but there are some key differences. Cross stitch is usually done on evenweave fabric, which is designed to have the same number of threads per inch horizontally and vertically. The fabric can be made from cotton, linen, or similar, and the choice of fabric depends on personal preference. Aida is a popular choice for beginners because it has very visible holes that make it easy to count the stitches. Threads are most commonly stranded cotton, but there are also silks, rayons, bamboo threads, and other specialty threads to choose from.

In contrast, needlepoint is usually done on canvas, which is a stiff, open-weave fabric made from cotton, linen, or synthetic materials. First, I want to say that you are not doing it wrong. Let’s just get that out of the way. Your cross-over spots and tucked tail ends are perfectly normal in needlework. Anyone that tells you the back must be perfectly tidy all the time is being kind of a pushy jerk that wants it done their way or not at all. Honestly, in my opinion, there is no wrong way to do a hobby as long as you’re enjoying yourself.

I see those posts in groups and on Insta where the back and the front are nearly identical, and I feel that same sense of wow and amazement. It really is stunning to see. Maybe a bit intimidating even. But in the vast majority of situations, it doesn’t matter a single bit what the back of the project looks like. Not even a little. No one is looking at the back of the project.

side tangent…. I also see some folks in those stitching groups requesting that others post photos of their project back as well when only the front progress is posted… and that’s just rude. And worse, when someone does comply and shows the back, they are then critisized for it not being perfect. Please, don’t be that person. If they wanted to post the back, they would have posted it. If you want to show off your project’s back, have at it, but don’t pressure others to do the same.

No one is going to un-frame your work and examine the back of your piece. I’ve never seen that happen in any needlework judging, and I would probably be horrified and angry if I did. A lot goes into framing a piece and if someone took it apart just to look and see how many times my threads crossed or if my tucked thread tails were a certain length, I might turn into a big angry green Hulk.

They will look for smoothness overall and they don’t want to see knots or mess showing through the front of the piece, but most of the time a perfect back is not part of the judging criteria. Even tension and general appeal of the piece are usually on the list, though all of the variables are going to vary by competition. Obviously, you’ll want to review the criteria before entering just to be sure what they’re looking for just to be sure for each individual competition that you enter.

At the end of the day, what truly matters is that you are enjoying stitching, no matter what the back of your cross stitch project looks like and no matter what anyone else thinks of your work.

In response to the 2017 Women’s March in the United States, the Pussyhat Project encouraged participants to knit or crochet pink hats to wear during the march. The hats became a powerful symbol of solidarity and women’s rights. The project continues to support initiatives and spark conversations.

The Social Justice Sewing Academy

This organization combines craftivism with youth education. Participants create quilt blocks that address social justice issues, such as racial inequality and LGBTQ+ rights. These blocks are then sewn together to create powerful works of art that spark thoughtful conversations.

Yarn Bombing

Sometimes referred to as guerrilla knitting, yarn bombing involves covering public spaces with knitted or crocheted fabric. It adds a touch of color and whimsy to otherwise ordinary environments and can be used to raise awareness or provoke thought. Yarm bombing has become so popular as a calm protest method that there’s an International Yarn Bombing Day on the second Saturday of June each year.

These examples demonstrate the versatility and impact of craftivism, showing how crafts and handiwork can be used as a powerful tool for activism, inviting individuals to engage with important issues in a creative and accessible way.

Of course, here at Stitching the Night Away, we’re always interested in the stitching projects. Cross stitch craftivism has been utilized in various successful campaigns around the world….

“Craftivist Jigsaw Project” initiated by the Craftivist Collective

This project involved creating cross stitch jigsaw pieces with messages of peace, which were then sent to politicians as a reminder of the importance of working together for a better world. The project garnered media attention and sparked conversations about the role of craftivism in shaping public opinion.

“Stitch for Syria” project initiated by Concern Worldwide

Individuals from around the world created cross stitch pieces to raise awareness about the Syrian refugee crisis. These pieces were exhibited in galleries and community spaces, sharing the stories and struggles of those affected by the crisis.

The Pride Pattern Bundle from The Starlight Stitchery

I mentioned this bundle in the big Pride pattern round up and on Facebook, and I personally purchased the bundle in support. In this example, a group of designers collaborated on a bundle and sold the patterns to raise funds for charities doing important work. I really like this model of fundraising using cross stitch patterns, and I look forward to seeing what else comes up at The Starlight Stitchery in the future.

In June 2023, a total of 1,051 bundles were sold for a grand total of $15,028.38 raised. All of the proceeds from the pattern bundle went directly to the charities; amazing donations of $7,515 to Rainbow Railroad and $7,515 to The Transgender Law Center.

These are just a handful of examples. New craftivism is popping up every day around various issues and causes, raising awareness and funding where it’s needed most.
