Quick Start Guide: Paper Flowers

Want to jump right in? Here’s what to expect:

In this tutorial, you’ll learn:

• How to make simple, beautiful paper flowers step-by-step
• The best types of paper to use (and what to avoid)
• Easy techniques to shape petals for a more realistic look
• A few different styles you can try depending on your project

Skill Level: Beginner
Time Required: 15–45 minutes (depending on style)
Supplies Needed: Paper, scissors (or Cricut), glue, and a few basic tools

Whether you’re making these for a party, home decor, or just for fun, paper flowers are one of the easiest DIY projects with a big visual payoff. Let’s get started!

So cute, right?! I have 3 different ways to show you to make these flowers! I had all the supplies on-hand and have my paper stash from cardstock found at Michaels.

Here’s a couple images to pin so you can refer to this tutorial later as well:

Materials Needed for Paper Flowers

You only need a few basic supplies to get started, and you may already have most of these at home:

Basic Supplies:

• Colored paper or cardstock in a variety of colors
• Scissors (or a cutting machine like a Cricut)
• Hot glue gun + glue sticks
• Pencil (for tracing or shaping)

Optional (but helpful):

• Floral wire, dowels or kabob skewer (for stems)
• Green floral tape
• Ink or chalk (to add color and dimension to petals)
• Bone folder or scoring tool (for curling petals)

My Go-To Supplies:

• Medium-weight cardstock (easy to cut but holds shape well)
• A reliable hot glue gun (low-temp works great)
• Sticks for hot glue
• Silhouette or Cricut machine for faster, more detailed cuts

You can keep this project super simple with just paper, scissors, and glue—or dress it up with extra details for a more realistic look.

Paper Flowers VIDEO TUTORIAL

The easiest way to show you how to make paper flowers is with a quick video tutorial – this video runs through all 3 types of flowers, so you’ll be a pro in no time! You can scroll down for the step-out instructions and pictures.

Method 1: Rolled Paper Flowers

The first way to make paper flowers a rolled paper flower – all it takes is scissors and paper and glue! Using your scissors, hand cut a spiral out of paper (it doesn’t have to be perfect!). Starting at the outside tail, roll the spiral around a pencil.

Once you get the center, cover the center in hot glue and press the roll of paper onto the glue. Arrange while the glue is still flexible to get the petals just how you like them. Remember, real flowers aren’t perfect, so your paper flowers don’t need to be either!

Create a center by cutting fringe into the edge of paper, then cutting the fringe into a strip and rolling it up. Glue it into the center.

Details help with paper flowers, so be sure to add some leaves. Hand cut leaf shapes and then fold them a little to give them dimension. Glue them onto the back of the flower, peeking out on the side.

Attach the dowel rod stem with a generous amount of hot glue on the back of the flower.

That’s it! A super easy way to make paper flowers for beginners. Enjoy creating this version!

Method 2: Making Paper Flowers Using a Punch

The next way to make easy paper flowers is using a die punch. Did you know that there are large punches that punch leaves and petals? They’re super fun! I have a couple from Fiskars, I used a succulent one, but here’s one that’s all petals punch. This one has lots of flower confetti shapes as well. Looking for one that has the perfect flower shape – try this one.

First go ahead and punch out all the pieces multiple times.

Curve up the edges around a pencil to give some dimension to each petal. Then using hot glue, layer them all together.

Add leaves and stem as mentioned above. That’s it! Another easy way to make paper flowers.

Method 3: Make Paper Flowers using Cutting Machine

A third way to make easy paper flowers is to use your cutting machine, such as a Silhouette or Cricut. Here’s a whole bundle of 3D Flower SVG designs. It will cut everything at once in pieces like below:

Then again, the key to making paper flowers extra awesome is the dimension, so go ahead and use a pencil to roll up the edges of all the petals. Give them a little curl to bring them to life.

Then layer and glue them all together using hot glue. Fluff and tweak until it’s at a point that you love it.

Attach leaves and stems using hot glue on the back.

Voila! Aren’t these so fun and cheery?

Chillin’ with my Peeps

Do you have a favorite version?

If you are totally new to HTV, also known as Heat Transfer Vinyl, also known as the kind of vinyl you can iron onto shirts, check out my post for beginners, How to use HTV. It’s super easy and tons of fun!

Supplies:

–Heat Transfer Vinyl (I always buy mine from Expressions Vinyl – affiliate link, but they are my go-to – – SO many color options!!)

Chillin’ With My Peeps, HTV Easter Tee

A few things to remember:

-if you’re using various colors of vinyl, you cut all the pieces separately – for example, below I’m cutting just one peep – everything else I pulled to the side, off of the mat area.

-when you cut the words, FLIP YOUR IMAGE – you cut HTV from the back (non-shiny) side, which means it needs to be backwards.

–Weed your vinyl (my tool of choice is a straight pin!).  Weeding is pulling off all the extra vinyl that isn’t part of the design.  Don’t forget the eyes and nose dots.

–note how the vinyl words are backwards – that’s how it should be:

–Next up, lay out all the pieces on your tee, to make sure you’re placing them where you want.  Can you tell what my awesome tip for Perfect Laying Placement IS?? (check that tip out HERE)

–Once everything is placed where you want it, get your iron ready!!

–Even though you placed everything to test the spacing, etc, you’ll need to iron on your HTV in layers.  Start with anything on the bottom layer – for this design, that’s the peeps.

Once they are adhered, peel off the clear carrier sheet.  Then lay down the next layer – in this design it’s the glasses and text.  Now, some of the vinyl on the peeps is exposed and you can’t touch vinyl with the iron with the carrier sheet.  So you’ll need to use an old sheet, or Expressions Vinyl carries Multi Use Paper for $0.80 (it’s under the “tools and accessories” category) that you can use.

Candy Corn – a classic fall treat! Either you love it or hate it, right? I’ve even heard of combining it with peanuts for a tasty snack. But one thing is for certain: it is SUPER CUTE for CRAFTING! Surprised? It’s inexpensive, brightly colored, and is a universal fall favorite; all of which make it the perfect crafting ingredient. We made some fun bracelets and earrings, and it was surprisingly easy! Let me show you how:

How to Make Candy Corn Jewelry

SUPPLIES (this post contains affiliate links):

Candy Corn

Stretch Magic cord (for the bracelet)

Hoop blanks (for the earrings)

Drill with small drill bit

Clear Mod Podge if sealing the earrings

How to Drill Holes in the Candy Corn

For all of these projects, you’ll need to drill holes in the Candy Corn – be patient as it’s harder than you think! I found that it worked best to set the drill up and then carefully hold the candy corn as you drill a hole through it. Use a small bit, around 1/16” and let the drill dig out the hole instead of trying to push the candy corn onto the drill bit. Use SLOW speeds! Know that some will break – it’s ok! Just eat the broken pieces…win, win, right?!

For the earrings, I placed the hole about 1/3 the way down from the point of the candy corn. For the bracelet, I placed the hole in the middle of the candy corn.

How to Make Candy Corn Earrings

After drilling small holes in the Candy Corn that is about the same size/shape, you’re ready to assemble your earrings.

You’ll want to spray those candy corn with a coat of sealer to protect them from getting wet and/or sticky. It goes without saying, but after you spray them, you shouldn’t eat them! Keep them away from little kiddos.

Next thread the candy corn onto the open hoop. With the hole being closer to the top of the candy corn, it allows the thicker bottom of the candy to fit nicely.

Voila! That’s all there is to it! way fun!! you might want to make a couple of extra candy corn with holes in case you need to swap out for any that may break. We haven’t had one break yet, but you never know.

How to Make a Candy Corn Bracelet

Next up, the bracelet!! I wanted to treat this one as you would a candy necklace, where you can eat the candy from it. Because of that, I DID NOT spray the candy with a sealer.

Line up your candies in similar size/shape, alternating up and down, as shown:

Using the Stretch Magic cording, thread the candy corn onto the cording.

Keep threading them on until you have enough to go all the way around the wrist.

Tie the ends of the stretch magic according to the package instructions (tie in a square knot and then tie another knot on top of that, pulling tight each time).

Wear and enjoy!

How to Make a Custom T-Shirt

Supplies/Tools:

–Cutting Machine (I recommend THIS ONE)

–Heat Transfer Vinyl (I get all mine at Expressions Vinyl)

–Blank Tee (I went with a blank baseball tee for this project)

For these tshirts, I used heat transfer vinyl and a cutting machine.  Sometimes you can hand-cut vinyl, but these are more intricate designs so you’ll need a cutting machine.  If you’ve never cut vinyl on a cutting machine, I have a video tutorial for that here: How to Use Heat Transfer Vinyl.

I think the element that I love the most are these fun individual servings of skittles, in little Skittles Shooters – aren’t they so fun??

Let’s dive right into the details of the Patriotic Party Tablescape!

First up, you’ll need lots of candy, I used Skittles.   The whole bag is filled with only red, white, and blue candies – party perfect You know that I do a Red White Blue Blog Series every summer, so you know that I am weak for a patriotic theme.

Here’s a more detailed glimpse at the table sides:

Another favorite is the design-a-plate activity – – like this:

There was a scoop to access candy Skittles:

And then Star cookie cutters to help design – simply fill place the cookie cutter on the plate, arrange Skittles as desired, then remove the cookie cutter.  My kids really loved this!

The key to a great tablescape is lots of levels of items and decor.  You’ll want to hang banners high behind your table and low on the front of the table. I had pom poms of various heights in jars filled with Skittles.  The cupcake stand was tiered and added great levels.

To balance the other side of the table, I set up the Skittles Shooters on a cake stand to bring some height.  To add color and facilitate scooping candies, I set the cake stand inside a flat galvanized bowl and filled that with candies – I really love how that part turned out.

I made the fun USA sign and you can find that tutorial on another post – it’s just some wood and paint and scrapbook paper, and it turned out really cute!

A great idea for any table centerpiece is the classic American flags.  Fill vases with candy and push the flags in, that’s all there is to it.

We’ve done a lot of hikes as a family, and we’re here to tell you why the Narrows is the best family hike at Zion National Park. We completed this hike as part of our amazing 9-Day, 5-Park National Park Road Trip and it was the highlight of our trip.

The Narrows is one of our favorites hikes of all time. It boasts amazing scenery, ginormous canyon walls, and the thrill of getting to hike though a river. It is the narrowest section of Zion Canyon, with walls reaching 1,000 feet or more above the river.

That said, hiking The Narrows takes more preparation and specialized gear than your typical day hike. Because you will be hiking through a river for most of the hike, you should be prepared with the basic essential gear for hiking The Narrows.

Essential Gear for Hiking the Narrows

Here are some other essential items that you should take to have the best experience possible in hiking The Narrows:

• Shoes: A good set of shoes specific for hiking through water is a must. This item is probably the most important item on your list to consider, and choosing the right pair of shoes will be the deciding factor between a great day hike or a miserable affair. You can read our list of specific recommendations for the best shoes for hiking The Narrows here. Or, if you’re pressed for time, just order a pair of Merrell Tetrex Rapid Crest Water Shoes (these are discontinued and may be hard to find) and know you’re getting our top pick. A great alternative is the All Out Blaze Sieve Water Shoe by Merrell.
• Socks: The right socks are almost as important as shoes. While some prefer to not wear socks with their water shoes, we found that a good pair of wool socks helps prevent blisters and keeps your feet warm. Be sure to NOT take cotton socks, as they are not a good choice when your feet will be wet. Wool socks keep your feet warm when dry and when wet. We really like these wool socks for mid-calf and these for an ankle fit.
• Trekking poles: Trekking poles, or collapsible hiking poles, are a must for ANYONE on the river. They will help you maintain balance on the slippery rocks. They’re also helpful for the kids. This set has proved to be a good budget model for us. We would recommend one set per person, or at least one pole per person. There are often wooden hiking sticks left by others at the start of the trail, but trust us and come prepared with your own trekking poles. You’ll thank me!
• Day packs/hydration packs: we snagged a couple of these packs and they worked great. Bring enough water for 1 – 2L per person or more, depending on how far you’ll be going. We used about 1L per person in our 6-mile round trip hike.
• Food and Snacks: We also packed a variety of snacks, and were glad we did – hiking in the water makes you hungry! We’re a big fan of protein bars like Quest, as well as good old-fashioned trail mix. Remember to pack out all trash, including things like orange and banana peels. Leave no trace!
• Sun protection: Bring sunscreen and a hat. We didn’t need it for the first part of the hike as we were in the shade in the morning hours, but as the day progressed we were glad we had them.
• Jacket or hoodie: It will be cool in the morning and you’ll be walking through cold water. The kids especially were cold starting out, but soon warmed up and shed their jackets. Keep in mind you’ll be in the water, so synthetic fibers (not cotton!) will dry faster and be lighter.
• Dry Bag : You’ll be walking in water, and there’s a good chance you’ll fall in. We had more than one in our group take a tumble. Pack anything you want to keep dry in a waterproof bag (we used big zip-locks and were fine).
• Camera: The canyon is amazing, and you’ll want your pictures to be amazing too. We took our Canon 6D; even though it was heavy and there was a risk of getting it wet, it was worth it to get great pictures. If you’re just looking to capture a few snapshots of your trek, your phone camera will do fine (just don’t expect to have clear signal).
• Custom shirts (optional): we knew we had to be wearing something special for this hike, so we designed some fun tees to celebrate the trek. You can check out our designs here.

Easter Week Activity Advent

It is an advent (because my kiddos LOVE advents and opening something each day in anticipation) of activities to do the week leading up to Easter.

You’ll need:

–activity word strips (one for each day leading up to Easter – they’re included in the printable pack!)

–plastic eggs

–number stickers or a sharpie

–printable activity strips

Everything you’ll need in way of cute printables and outlined activities has already been prepared – it doesn’t get much easier than that.

Easter Week Activity Advent ASSEMBLY

Your biggest preparation will be putting together the eggs.  I used sticker numbers, but a sharpie marker will work just as well.  You will need 8 eggs, numbered 1-8.  You will open them in reverse order, starting with egg #8.  We simply used a stick from our yard and tied the eggs to it with twine.  Most plastic eggs have holes in the top – I used a large needle to get the twine threaded through those holes.

Cut apart the activity strips.  Each one is numbered – fold it up and put it in the corresponding numbered egg.

Daily Easter Activities
Activities range from journaling as a family to watching an online video to baking treats and delivering them to a neighbor.  It is focused on learning more about Jesus and His teachings and the events that led up to Easter Sunday.  You can find all the materials in the FREE printables EASTER WEEK ACTIVITIES ADVENT.  Simply print out the advent, cut the strips apart, fold them up and put them in the coordinating numbered eggs.  There are also cute quote printables, journaling pages, and more.

Then each day counting down until Easter, you’ll open the number on the egg that corresponds to how many days are left, and be able to do the activity that’s inside.  Fun!!

Knitting Machine for Ear Warmers

I used a knitting machine – I have both a 48 pin and a 40 pin knitting machine – either one will make an ear warmer, but the 48 pin one will be wider. For this project I used my 40 pin knitting machine.

Ear Warmer Details

I got the display card from Etsy, printed it on my home computer, and glued it a piece of posterboard and cut it out. Here: Messy Bun Display Card

I made my own tag!! I might do a whole post on this later, but I used Leatherette Sheets and my cutting machine. I used heat transfer vinyl to add the heart. Then attached it with a simple Chicago Screw.

Gnome Hoop Supplies

You’ll need:
–fabric, in a variety of coordinating colors, including “fur” fabric
—3 inch embroidery hoops
—heat n bond
—embroidery floss (optional)
—pom pom trim (optional)
–free printable gnome pattern pieces (see below)

Gnome Hoop Instructions

First iron the Heat N Bond onto the back of the fabric that you are going to use:

Next up, cut out your gnome pieces as desired:

Arrange pieces to accommodate for a beard. Cut beard out of fur material.

Peel backing from heat-n-bond. Place pieces on desired fabric background and iron into place. Use hot glue to attach the beard piece.

Finishing Gnome Touches

To finish your Gnome Hoop, put the gnome into an embroidery hoop. Hot glue excess fabric behind the hoop. Add top stitching with embroidery floss if desired. Add pom poms to hoop with hot glue if desired. Tie with twine to hang as an ornament.

That’s it!! Enjoy making your Gnome Hoop Ornament!!
