SWIMSEAL RANKS HIGH AT TOP INNOVATION AWARDS

SwimSeal, a brand of protective ear drops has been voted as a Category Finalist in the Mama Magic Product Innovation Awards held in Johannesburg last week. Speaking from the awards, brand custodian Jessica McArthur says that it’s the second time that SwimSeal has come out tops in these awards, and she’s thrilled with the accolade.

“SwimSeal has featured alongside some of the industry’s most smart and new innovations, and has still come out shining.” McArthur attributes this placement to the on-going trust that new moms are placing in the brand when bathing their tiny bundles.

“Babies and children are prone to various complications if water enters the ear, and is unable to drain. At the very least, the child will be in discomfort and might start to dislike bath time, making a parent’s job very difficult.”

Swimmers ear is an external inflammation of the outer ear canal caused by trapped fluid. “Many people associate swimmers ear with extended periods spent in the pool, but it can just as easily be contracted during bath time.”

“The SwimSeal product was developed by Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) specialists and is a proven formula for the prevention of ear infections as a result of water exposure. SwimSeal contains no alcohol and can be used on babies, children and adults of all ages. Protecting your young children from any pain relating to bath time is important for a healthy routine as they grow older,” says McArthur.

SwimSeal at the Mama Magic Baby Expo- Johannesburg, South Africa.

Mid May saw the SwimSeal team at the Mama Magic Baby expo at the Coca Cola Dome in Johanesburg South Africa. We spent the 4 days educating new parents on the importance of using SwimSeal at Bath time. Babies and children are prone to various complications if water enters the ear, and is unable to drain. At the very least, the child will be in discomfort and might start to dislike bath time, making a parent’s job very difficult. SwimSeal is the perfect partner at bath time.

SwimSeal was also voted a Category Finalist in the Mama Magic Product Innovation Awards. It is the second time that SwimSeal has come out tops in these awards, and we are thrilled with the accolade.

We received over 3000 parents visiting our stand and were able to demonstrate exactly how the product works. Parents were able to interact with our team and ask questions.

There’s a whole raft of swimming toys and aids out there to help your child learn to swim….but what will be best for your child? Don’t go overboard and splash out before you have read our guide.

For water babies look for toys that can be used in the pool, on holiday or in the bath. Collect an array of colourful plastic balls, animal shapes, water cans and rubber ducks! Right from the beginning it is all about making your child feel safe and confident to have fun in the water.

Moving from a water baby to a little swimmer can be daunting. Look for products that will give your child a feeling of stability and security. As they develop their confidence in the water you can change the levels of buoyancy needed.

Try not to let your child become dependent on flotation aids. Your child needs to get used to the movement of the water and to find their own balance in the water.

Armbands, are cheap and easy to buy but can be cumbersome, hindering learning as they restrict arm movement. If armbands are lopsided, it will be impossible to swim in a straight line. Look for well-designed armbands that have good arm and elbow mobility as this will give a better body position for swimming.

Swimming rings are usually the first swimming aid bought for a child. But they are not the safest, a child can easily over rotate and end up with their face in the water. Rings don’t give the true feeling of water as shoulders are out. If the ring fits snuggly and worn with armbands, they can be used by young beginners to have fun practicing lots of leg kicking.

Delphin Discs are more expensive to buy but have the advantage of being comfortable to wear, encouraging better arm movement and as confidence builds discs can gradually be removed. Kids can develop their arms and leg movement without being impeded. Delphin Discs are durable and long lasting.

Shark Fins help kids strengthen their arms and legs without any restriction but if you have a very small child that is kicking but hasn’t quite got the motor skills to master arm movements, they tend to tip the child forward. The fins are a novelty and can be hard to balance. For young children it’s best to pair the fin with arm bands or a float for some buoyancy, encouraging them with games until they improve their balance.

Body suits, Swim vests or flotation vests are great for little ones who want some independence. The level of flotation aid can gradually be removed, giving more freedom than armbands and are easier to put on. The blocks can gradually be removed as confidence builds. There are some disadvantages, however, as they hold the child in the wrong position in the water, only last the age limit and are expensive
Kick Boards or Floats allow support to practice legs and individual arm practices. Start with two floats and then progress to using just one. Kids can use them on their fronts or back, and are used just as much with advanced swimmers or beginners. Brightly coloured and fun, the floats can be animal shaped, numbers, letters and building blocks.

Woggles or Noodles provide oodles of fun. The noodle wraps around the swimmer’s body, both front and back, giving plenty of buoyancy. Swimmers gain confidence and some swimming techniques by feeling this support around them. The noodle can be knotted to add interest, sat on for balance and allows swimming on front or on back. Noodles appeal to all ages even when your child can swim. This is the best aid for the price, fun and versatility it offers.

For the more advanced swimmer, how about exploring under the water? Rings to swim through, hoops to dive for and a snorkel set to encourage under water exploration.

Every child develops at a different pace, so make being in the water as much fun as you can and then the learning will happen.

Don’t forget the SwimSeal – two or three drops every couple of hours.

Not restricted to the summer months, if you spend any time in the water – be it at the local swimming baths, or plunging into the Mediterranean – there is a strong possibility of suffering from swimmer’s ear, or otitis externa, to provide its medical name. While some people resort to inserting earplugs, as a means to inhibit the ingress of fresh, pool, or sea water, depending on how energetic the swim is, or how deeply you might be diving, they can slip out as imperceptibly as they are fitted. My cousin is a renowned Olympics ’Gold’ swimming champion and he always used to swear by Olbas Oil, which is a mentholated treatment that usually relieves the nasal symptoms of colds. While I can comprehend his logic, as tea tree oil is a most effective, natural anti-bacterial agent, personally, I would seek the treatment recommended by ENT (ear, nose and throat) medical specialists, working from an old premise about not sticking anything in your cranium’s various cavities that ought not be there. SwimSeal is that latest product, which arrives with a wealth of welcome approbation from all quarters. Although contained within a 7.5ml plastic ‘dropper’ bottle, which makes it seem conspicuously expensive, as you need no more of an application than two to three droplets and the contents will probably suffice for a typical family of four, for around a year, it is probably the best ‘professional fix’ for your ears. In case you are wondering how a few drops of tincture can resolve a painful ear problem, let it be said that SwimSeal does not stop the water from entering the ears. If you already have wax issues and occasional blockages that require syringing out, then this product is little more than a palliative. It does contain the aforementioned tea tree oil, albeit at around a 2.5% concentration, which is scarcelyBoy-Swimming any at all, although it is clearly enough to warrant what beneficial effects it has and provides its customary mentholated odour. The balance of the constituents is polysiloxane (97.5%), which means that one product provides the natural element, while the other satisfies the medical profession. SwimSeal’s formulation acts in a similar way to earwax, in that it coats the external ear canal, thereby protecting the delicate tissue from the prolonged effects of repeated immersions in water, while providing an antiseptic effect against potential contamination. There is no compromise of the ear’s normal functions and the only contraindications are perforated eardrums, grommets in the ears, or the rare instance of hypersensitivity towards either of the elements of its constituents. Easy to slip into a travel bag, or sports kit, while perhaps not ‘an essential’, SwimSeal does serve purpose and might provide a necessary prevention, rather than cure, of some of the earache issues that can arise for swimmers.
