Before: High Costs and Cold Water

Previously, Palms at Serenoa relied on propane gas heaters. While functional, the system was inefficient and expensive to operate. The community faced a common Florida HOA dilemma:

• Prohibitive Costs: High fuel costs forced the community to forgo heating in January and February.
• Compromised Comfort: Even when the system was running, they could only afford to maintain a lukewarm 82°F.

One of the greatest advantages of GeoThermal heat pump technology is its ability to maintain consistent water temperatures in every season. Previously, the Janet J. Smith pool was closed during the cooler winter months due to the lack of heating. When open during warmer seasons, pool temperatures fluctuated with weather conditions, often becoming too warm or too cool for optimal swimmer comfort.

With the new GeoThermal heat pump system in place, the pool will maintain a steady, comfortable 84°F year-round, regardless of air temperature or weather conditions. Stoneybrook Trades Inconsistent Temperatures for Year-Round Comfort with Symbiont GeoThermal

Symbiont Service Corp is thrilled to celebrate the successful completion of a major GeoThermal pool heating and cooling system upgrade at Stoneybrook: A Golf Community!

Nestled in Estero, Florida, Stoneybrook is a premier gated community featuring 1,119 luxury homes surrounding a championship golf course. The community prides itself on providing exceptional amenities, including a beautiful pool and spa. Ensuring residents enjoy comfortable swimming temperatures year-round is a top priority, and Stoneybrook wisely chose the budget-savvy, energy-efficient solution of GeoThermal for pool heating and cooling.

However, the community faced a frustrating challenge. The original GeoThermal system, installed by a different company, consistently failed to deliver the expected performance. Seeking a definitive solution for their residents, Stoneybrook reached out to Symbiont Service in 2020.

The Symbiont Solution: Addressing the Root Cause

Upon conducting our initial survey, the issue became immediately clear: the system was severely undersized. This critical flaw prevented the equipment from maintaining Stoneybrook’s desired temperatures.

With GeoThermal systems, proper installation and tuning are integral to successful system operation. However, when incorrectly sized, a GeoThermal system will not deliver top performance – regardless of the installation quality. In our 40 years installing GeoThermal pool heating systems, we’ve observed improper sizing to be a common denominator when evaluating systems installed by other companies.

In Stoneybrook’s case, our professional recommendation was to upgrade the entire setup to our SYMBIONT GeoThermal units. To accommodate the community’s budget constraints, we developed a flexible, multi-phase plan: we opted to swap out the existing units in a piecemeal fashion, replacing one or two per year until the entire system was renewed.

Commitment to Consistent Performance

By 2025, after successfully replacing three of the original units, Stoneybrook decided to accelerate the project and replace the remaining units all at once.

As of June, installation was fully complete! The results are impressive: during a visit to the property in December, we observed that the pool is now maintaining a toasty 90°F, with the spa consistently at 104°F. These are temperatures Stoneybrook could only have dreamed about reaching with their former system. For the SYMBIONT GeoThermal system, delivering this level of performance is effortless.

Tamiami Park Upgrades to the Next Generation of Symbiont Service GeoThermal Pool Heating & Cooling

Twenty-three years ago, Miami-Dade Parks & Recreation made a forward-thinking decision at Tamiami Park: replacing two 1,000,000 BTU per hour input Teledyne-Laars natural gas heaters with six Symbiont PHH-165-RV reverse-cycle GeoThermal pool heating and cooling units.

That upgrade transformed the 50-meter competition pool, maintaining a steady 82–84°F year-round, reducing environmental impact, and lowering operating costs by approximately $20,000 annually.

In 2012, the park continued that momentum with an upgrade to four Symbiont PH215 units, streamlining the system while further increasing efficiency.

Now, after more than two decades of reliable GeoThermal performance, Tamiami Park is ready for the next chapter.

A New Generation of GeoThermal Technology

Symbiont Service Corp is proud to begin replacing the PH215 units with the newest evolution in GeoThermal technology: the Symbiont PH300 GeoThermal pool heating and cooling system.

This double-titanium unit is the largest BTU producer in the Symbiont lineup and has become the top choice for cities, municipalities, YMCAs, universities, competition pools, and water parks across the state of Florida. Its efficiency, durability, and output make it an ideal fit for a high-demand facility like Tamiami Park.

Symbiont Service Corp is proud to partner with the City of Hialeah on a major energy-efficient upgrade at the Milander Aquatic Center. The facility’s 555,000-gallon competition pool now features a new GeoThermal pool heating system designed to deliver exceptional performance and substantial long-term savings.

With a surface area of over 12,700 square feet, maintaining the pool’s ideal temperature of 83°F requires serious power: about 40.5 million BTUs per day. To meet that demand, Symbiont installed eight PH215 GeoThermal pool heaters, providing more than 43.4 million BTUs per day of heating capacity.

The results? Lower costs, cleaner energy, and impressive long-term savings. By switching from their old gas heaters to GeoThermal technology, Milander Aquatic Center is projected to save approximately $54,980 every year, which is more than one million dollars over the next 18 years.

Symbiont Service Corp’s GeoThermal units have been providing Southwest Recreation Complex’s Olympic-sized swimming pool with precise temperatures at affordable energy costs since 2001. 

The facility hosts several aquatic events throughout the year and is the home training facility for the West Florida Lightning Aquatics Swimming, Masters and Diving programs and the Suncoast WaterWorks Synchronized Swimming Team. These aquatic activities require a consistent water temperature in all seasons, and that’s where our GeoThermal system shines. After a few finishing touches, Belen Jesuit’s new GeoThermal system will be up and running in early July 2025, ready to heat and cool their pools with unmatched efficiency and reliability.

We’re making waves in the pool industry!

Symbiont Service’s Steve Olds represented the Gulf Coast Chapter at the Florida Swimming Pool Association’s (FSPA) State Board Meeting in Daytona Beach, alongside fellow board member and treasurer Jim Haidet.

The association meets quarterly to discuss legislative issues affecting the pool industry.

Two items addressed at this meeting included:

1. the Safe Water Instruction for Minors (SWIM) Act, which aims to allow parents to apply HSA/FSA funds to swimming lessons for their children, and
2. allowing trade associations to form health insurance groups, reducing insurance costs for members.

FSPA has full-time lobbyists in Tallahassee and Washington D.C. that support and further the interests of their members. Recently, Steve Olds made the trip to the state capital himself to testify on HB 801, which would have expanded A/C contractors’ scope of work to include replacing pool heaters.

Next up, he’ll be testifying on the copper wire bonding issue currently under review by the state legislature.

A client for over 30 years, the Venice YMCA originally hired us to install a well-source GeoThermal system for their 610,000-gallon pool in 1992, followed by a GeoThermal system for their 800-gallon whirlpool spa in 2005.

The pool is heated and cooled to 82°F year-round by five (5) SymbiontTM Model PH-215-RV GeoThermal Heat Pumps extracting heat from a deep aquifer well installed on the property for this purpose. The spa is heated to a constant 104°F by two (2) SymbiontTM Model PH-090-T GeoThermal Heat Pumps, using pool water for the heat source.

With GeoThermal heating and cooling, the Venice Y saves over $31,000 in annual operation costs compared to gas heating! Those savings indicate that their GeoThermal system paid for itself in a little over two years.
