Attorney Describes Handling of Bess Gamble-Williams Case as “Highly Unusual”

Texarkana, Texas — When Texarkana News reached out to four local attorneys for comment on the Bess Gamble-Williams case, none were willing to speak on the record. It wasn’t until we were referred to a respected attorney based outside Bowie County — who sometimes practices here — that someone finally agreed to review the case and share his thoughts, on the condition of anonymity.

Gamble-Williams lost her case Thursday, June 4, over an alleged trademark infringement involving a $1 flyer in a Bowie County Justice Court bench trial. This came after the court refused to admit phone records she tried to present in her defense.

After reviewing the facts, the attorney did not hold back.

“This one stands out,” he said. “There are several things about how this case was handled that I find highly unusual — especially given who the defendant is.”

Disproportionate Treatment of a Veteran and Community Volunteer

The attorney expressed concern about how a longtime Marine veteran, licensed private investigator (Virginia), and Toys for Tots coordinator was treated in what was a minor Class C misdemeanor.

“She’s a prominent citizen who has spent decades working with children and serving this community,” the attorney said. “The decision to move the case into a full courtroom, with the sheriff and a deputy testifying, seems disproportionate for an offense that normally carries only a fine and no jail time.”

The attorney noted that Gamble-Williams was arrested at the Bowie County Courthouse while attempting to address the warrant related to her License to Carry permit. He also pointed out that she spent approximately 24 hours in custody despite the charge not carrying a jail sentence.

Court’s Refusal to Admit Evidence

One of the attorney’s primary concerns was the court’s decision not to allow certain evidence to be presented.

According to the attorney, Gamble-Williams attempted to introduce phone records and notes showing she had been contacted by a Marine Corps Reserve lieutenant and a Harley-Davidson representative the day before the warrant was issued. The attorney stated that this type of evidence is generally not considered hearsay when offered by the person who received the calls.

“Not allowing her to present that information raises questions about whether she was given a full opportunity to defend herself,” the attorney said.

The attorney also noted that police and fire officials had contacted Gamble-Williams weeks earlier regarding Toys for Tots distribution and were aware of her role as a local point of contact. He said this context could have been relevant to understanding her actions.

Questions About Fairness and Context

He noted that Gamble-Williams has drawn criticism for her activism, including her work to remove the Confederate Mother’s Statue in downtown Texarkana.

The attorney made it clear that he disagrees with Gamble-Williams’ views on the statute issue. However, he emphasized that all individuals are entitled to basic fairness in the legal process.

“Most police officers and judges are generally good and decent people,” he said. “But sometimes personal feelings or other factors can influence how a case is handled, even if unintentionally.”

The attorney observed that cases involving the use of a logo on a flyer are rarely prosecuted criminally, particularly when no money was collected and no actual harm occurred. He noted that this case stood out because of the formal courtroom setting, the public statements made by law enforcement, and the limitations placed on the evidence Gamble-Williams was permitted to present.

Advice for the Appeal

The attorney strongly encouraged Gamble-Williams to appeal the conviction. He noted that she has 10 days to file an appeal and has access to legal support through her nephew, who is a respected attorney in Dallas.

If the case moves to County Court for a new trial, the attorney offered the following recommendations:

Call key witnesses — He advised that Gamble-Williams should consider calling the Marine Corps Reserve lieutenant and the Harley-Davidson representative as witnesses. Their testimony could help establish why they contacted her and what they asked her to do.
Seek admission of previously excluded evidence — The attorney recommended that she argue for the admission of the phone records, screenshots, and notes that were not allowed in the first trial.
Request a jury trial — He suggested that requesting a jury in County Court could provide a fresh perspective on the facts and the proportionality of the response.
Demand full discovery — The attorney said Gamble-Williams should seek complete discovery, including any complaints filed against her and communications between the sheriff’s office and other parties involved.
Focus on fairness and proportionality — He recommended framing the defense around the minor nature of the charge, the lack of any financial harm, and the context of her long-standing role with Toys for Tots.

“This is the type of case where a fresh look in County Court could make a difference,” the attorney said. “She should go into the new trial with a good attorney - instead of self-representation. And make sure she or he has her best interest at heart.”

Gamble-Williams has indicated she plans to appeal. If she does, the case will be heard again in County Court as a trial de novo, meaning it will start over with the opportunity to present additional evidence and request a jury.

The Pleasant Grove High School graduate and former David Crowder Band frontman returns to the church where his worship journey and first major album launch began — October 27, 2026

In Texarkana, he is still known simply as David Crowder — the tall Pleasant Grove High School basketball player and journalism photographer who launched his very first studio album and headlined a major concert right here at home before becoming one of the most influential voices in modern worship music.

On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Crowder returns to First Baptist Church Texarkana for a special night of worship as part of his fall tour, joined by the acclaimed Irish collective Rend Collective and special guest Benjamin William Hastings.

This homecoming carries particular meaning. The same church that hosted his first major album pre-sale and a successful David Crowder Band concert in 2002 will once again welcome him back more than two decades later.

From Sleepy Hollow Ave. to Pleasant Grove and a Life Shaped by Faith and Music

David Crowder was born on November 29, 1971, in Texarkana. He grew up on Sleepy Hollow Ave. and attended Pleasant Grove High School, where, as a tall teenager, he played basketball and worked as a photographer in the journalism department.

It was during his senior year at Pleasant Grove that Crowder met the young woman who would become his wife. He first noticed Toni in Mrs. Davis’ food and nutrition class. He later worked up the courage to ask her to a Valentine’s banquet at church, borrowing a friend’s Toyota Celica for the occasion. Their relationship began there and has remained a steady part of his life and ministry ever since.

The Music Started in Texarkana

The church played a central role in Crowder’s upbringing. The family attended First Baptist Church Texarkana, and David’s father served in the bus ministry. But it was in the church’s youth group, under director Dan Carson, that Crowder first began playing keyboard and leading worship.

He has reflected on that time: “I have always loved music, but it was our youth director at FBC, Dan Carson, who gave me an outlet for it. I was horrible but he would let me fail in front of my peers on the weekly.”

Dan Carson later spoke about Crowder’s time in the youth group: “David was a joy to have in our youth group at FBC. He was in the youth band, on keyboard. He was kind to everybody and respected as a Christian. We loved his family. They were huge supporters of our youth ministry. When he graduated from high school, he traveled with me for a couple of summers doing camps. He really began to grow as a musician. He went off to Baylor, and God really blessed his talents. We have been so proud of the success he has had. I am amazed every time he comes out with a new record or every time we get to hear him live. He is our favorite artist for sure. So proud of him and Toni. She deserves a lot of credit for his success.”

At age seven, David had professed faith during a children’s event at the church and was later baptized there.

After high school, Crowder attended Baylor University, where he helped start University Baptist Church. That experience led to the formation of David Crowder Band.

Album launch in Texarkana

In 2002, the band released its debut studio album, Can You Hear Us?, on Sparrow Records and sixsteprecords. A pre-sale was offered locally through John 3:16 Christian Gifts in Central Mall in conjunction with a David Crowder Band concert at First Baptist Church Texarkana. The local Christian bookstore reported sales through Nielsen SoundScan for the national music charts, and hundreds of albums were sold on release day. The concert itself was a significant success and helped give the project strong early support from Crowder’s hometown community.

That album launch and the community support behind it marked the beginning of a journey that would eventually reach 2.1 billion streams worldwide and more than 3 million in album sales.

A Consistent Message of Grace

Throughout his career, Crowder has maintained a clear and consistent message. He has described his approach to songwriting this way: “I feel like I’m redundant in my lyricism. I keep singing, over and over — no one is too far gone, grace is expansive, and the gospel is not about making bad people good, it’s about making dead people alive.”

That same emphasis on grace has remained central to his music and ministry for more than two decades.

A Night of Worship at First Baptist Church

The October 27 concert will feature Crowder alongside Rend Collective and Benjamin William Hastings. The evening is expected to be a time of joyful, participatory worship, with songs that have become meaningful to many, including “Good God Almighty,” “Grave Robber,” and “Somebody Prayed.”

For many in Texarkana, the night will carry added significance as a return to the place where Crowder’s public ministry first took shape — the same sanctuary where he was baptized, where he first led worship as a teenager, and where he performed the concert that helped launch his band's debut studio album in 2002.

Court Blocks Key Evidence from Bess Gamble-Williams in Toys for Tots Bench Trial

Bess Gamble-Williams, a longtime Marine veteran and Toys for Tots coordinator, lost in a bench trial Thursday after the court refused to admit phone records and blocked her from naming the people who called her the day before the warrant was issued

The case centered on a small Toys for Tots train logo printed on an informational brochure worth less than a dollar. Gamble-Williams said no collection efforts had even begun when the warrant was issued.

What Happened in Court

Bess Gamble-Williams told Texarkana News that a witness called by the state admitted in court that he knew of her longtime work with Toys for Tots. However, the court still declined to admit phone records showing calls she received and would not allow her to name the callers.

Gamble-Williams said the court information she received indicated the trial for the low-level alleged offense would be handled in a small second-floor office. Instead, the case was moved to a full courtroom before Precinct 1 - Place 2, Justice of the Peace Jay Womack. She represented herself, was found guilty, and was given a $500 fine plus approximately $81 in court fees.

Evidence Not Admitted

According to Gamble-Williams, she attempted to introduce screenshots from her phone showing calls she received the day before the warrant was issued in October 2025 from a Marine Corps Reserve lieutenant and a Harley-Davidson representative. She said both individuals had contacted her because the Toys for Tots collection efforts would begin soon, and she was known as a local contact. She said she then delivered a flyer to them, which she said they were expecting.

“They wouldn’t even allow me to say their names,” Gamble-Williams said. “They said it was hearsay. But I had the actual screenshots from my phone showing the calls that day. That’s not hearsay.”

Gamble-Williams said she mentioned older brochures she had used since at least 2006 - apparently with the same logo. She brought a binder containing those materials to show that similar brochures had been used for over 20 years. She also said she had contemporaneous notes of the calls from the Marine lieutenant and the Harley-Davidson representative, but those notes were not admitted as evidence.

A local witness called by the prosecution, a Toys for Tots “ambassador,” testified that he had known of Gamble-Williams’ work with the program over the years.

Timeline of Events

Bess Gamble-Williams said that in the weeks prior to the warrant being issued in October 2025, police and fire officials contacted her about distributing toys. She told them they would have to get in line with other groups.

“I told them they had to get in line like everybody else,” she said. Gamble-Williams explained that she had sometimes seen minority children not receive toys in past distributions and wanted to make sure they also had a Merry Christmas.

The warrant in the case was issued in October 2025, but according to Gamble-Williams, it was never entered into the state system. Several months later, when she appeared before the Bowie County Commissioners Court to have the warrant vacated so she could obtain a License to Carry permit, she was arrested and spent approximately 24 hours in custody for an alleged crime with no penalty of jail time.

Mrs. Gamble Williams also alleged that police issued an all-points-bulletin (APB) to every county in Texas to deliver her to Bowie County for warrant processing for the alleged offense which did not carry the possibility of jail time.

Court Proceedings

Gamble-Williams said she received no evidence from the county prosecutor’s office prior to trial. She noted that all evidence offered by the prosecution was admitted. Justice Court is not a court of record, so no court reporter was present.

“[Their] whole witnesses were hearsay. But see, he didn’t let me know that I could have witnesses,” she said.

Gamble-Williams said she was surprised to see Sheriff Jeff Neal and a deputy sheriff testify. She said the county was represented by a young female prosecutor whose name was not available at press time.

After the Verdict

Following the verdict, Gamble-Williams said she approached the prosecutor and told her she understood she was doing her job. She smiled as she left the courtroom and later stated that she believed she had done nothing wrong and had the truth on her side.

“I kept a smile,” she said. And that was aggravating [them] ’cause I was smiling and they were like, “What? She’s smiling?”

Background on Gamble-Williams

During the proceeding, the court was told that Gamble-Williams is a decorated Marine veteran who served 20 years and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. It was also noted that she was a private investigator licensed in Virginia and serves as Chief Financial Officer and Senior Partner for Shield of Valor Executive Protection and Private Investigation, which is licensed in Texas by the Department of Public Safety and registered in California, Georgia, and Nevada.

Gamble-Williams is also a local activist but has drawn both criticism and praise for her prior activism on topics such as the removal of the Confederate Mother’s Statue in downtown Texarkana.

Next Steps and Possible Appeal

Gamble-Williams indicated that an appeal was likely, and she has 10 days to appeal the verdict. She said she is compiling additional documentation and intends to make more records public in the coming days.

In Texas, an appeal from a Justice Court conviction on a Class C misdemeanor goes to County Court. This type of appeal is known as a trial de novo, meaning the case would be heard again from the beginning as if the original trial had not taken place. In a new trial, Gamble-Williams would have the opportunity to call witnesses, obtain discovery, argue for the admission of previously excluded evidence, and request a jury trial if she chooses.

Pleasant Grove Hawks Dominate West Plains in State Semifinal Sweep, Advance to Class 4A Division I State Championship Game

FRISCO — The Pleasant Grove Hawks are heading back to the state championship.

For the second time in three years, the Hawks will play for a Class 4A Division I state title after delivering a commanding two-game sweep of the West Plains Wolves in the state semifinals at RoughRiders Park (Riders Field) in Frisco.

Pleasant Grove took Game 1 on Thursday, May 28, by a score of 10-3, then delivered a decisive 10-0 mercy-rule shutout in Game 2 on Friday, May 29, to punch their ticket to Dell Diamond in Round Rock on June 5.

The Hawks (state runners-up in 2025 and champions in 2021) showed exactly why they are one of the most complete and battle-tested teams in Texas high school baseball. Their pitching staff continued its historic dominance, and the offense was relentless against a West Plains squad that had made its deepest playoff run in program history.

Game 1 Recap: Hunter Rose Sets the Tone (10-3)

University of Arkansas signee Hunter Rose was electric on the mound and at the plate. The left-hander improved to 11-0 with a complete-game effort, striking out seven while allowing just four hits and three runs (one earned). Rose also went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run triple that helped blow the game open.

Pleasant Grove jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second without a hit, capitalizing on walks and a West Plains error. The Hawks added runs in every inning from the third through sixth, using small ball, timely hitting, and aggressive base running to wear down the Wolves. Spencer Browning and Walker Wright also contributed in key spots.

The Hawks’ pitching trio of Rose, Browning (another Arkansas signee), and Wright entered the series with 16 shutouts on the season (six in the postseason). That depth and command proved too much for West Plains starter Jesse Flores (who fell to 9-2) and the Wolves’ bullpen.

Game 2: Spencer Browning Delivers a Masterpiece (10-0 Shutout)

With the series on the line, Arkansas signee Spencer Browning took the ball and delivered a complete-game shutout in just six innings under the mercy rule. Browning scattered five hits, walked two, and struck out one while keeping West Plains off the scoreboard entirely. It marked Pleasant Grove’s **17th shutout of the season** and their **10th in the postseason** — an astounding display of pitching consistency.

The Hawks’ offense exploded for 10 runs on what reports indicate was a 12-hit attack. They scored two runs in the first inning alone: Browning doubled to center, and Jace Elrod followed with a sacrifice fly. Buck Anderson later ripped a ball to the outfield wall for a two-RBI double, and Walker Wright went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the charge. Landon Fincher added a triple, while strong defense — including standout plays from third baseman Harrison Hoover and a game-ending catch by Blue Rose — helped enforce the 10-0 mercy-rule victory.

West Plains put multiple runners on base in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings but could not break through Pleasant Grove’s defense or Browning’s command. The Wolves finished the game with zero runs on five hits.

Texarkana, Texas — With the final bell ringing on the 2025-2026 school year this week, Pleasant Grove ISD turns its focus to summer — and the Jonathan Darby Era is now fully underway.

After 12 highly successful seasons that produced two state titles and six district championships, Josh Gibson’s championship era has officially ended. Darby, the longtime defensive coordinator and associate athletic director, was promoted in January. While the move brings continuity, this summer marks the true beginning of his leadership.

What’s Ahead This Summer

Bess Gamble-Williams stands as one of Texarkana’s most prominent and widely recognized citizens. A retired U.S. Marine Gunnery Sergeant, historian, educator, philanthropist, and dedicated volunteer, she has appeared on every local television station, in regional magazines and newspapers, and at countless community events for more than twenty years.

From helping lead Toys for Tots campaigns that brought Christmas joy to thousands of local children over the years to preserving the city’s rich history, mentoring families, tutoring adults, and advocating for veterans and underprivileged residents, members of the community told Texarkana News that Gamble-Williams has given tirelessly of herself to make Texarkana a stronger, fairer, and more compassionate place for everyone. Toys for Tots was started by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1947.

24 Hours in Jail for a $1 Brochure

Yet this respected native daughter now faces an alleged Class C misdemeanor charge of trademark counterfeiting valued at between $1 and $100. Gamble-Williams emphatically maintains she committed no crime. She describes the situation as a misunderstanding, overreach, and possible retaliation connected to her long-established, legitimate role of community activism and helping to coordinate the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program in the Texarkana area. Despite the minor nature of the alleged offense — which normally carries only a fine of up to $500 and no jail time — she was arrested and spent approximately 24 hours in custody. Her supporters call the detention disproportionate, harsh, and reflective of deeper local tensions.

The charge against Bess Gamble-Williams essentially boils down to her possession of a standard promotional flyer valued at just $1 that allegedly featured the Toys for Tots logo. According to the Bowie County Sheriff’s Department, this single flyer constituted trademark counterfeiting — a Class C misdemeanor. Gamble-Williams and her supporters find the charge astonishing, noting that she had been recognized for Toys for Tots in Texarkana for over two decades. No donations had been collected, and no toys had been distributed at the time of the complaint.

In an in-depth interview, Gamble-Williams, joined by notable fellow Marines and business partners Jason C. Lisby and Stephen J. Pettus II of Shield of Valor Executive Protection, opened up about her deep family roots in Texarkana, her distinguished military career, her unwavering community service, and the events that led to her current legal challenge.

Deep Texarkana Roots: A Founding Family Legacy

Gamble-Williams’ ties to Texarkana run generations deep. Born and raised right here in the city, she proudly identifies as Choctaw. Her ancestors were among the Indigenous peoples — primarily Choctaw, along with Cherokee, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Caddo — who lived on and helped shape this borderland long before it became the modern city we know today.

“My ancestors are one of the founders of Texarkana. My family helped settle Texarkana. Ross Perot was one of the pallbearers at my ancestor’s funeral. That’s how far back it goes.”

One of her forebears even served as a past sheriff in the region, she said. According to Gamble-Williams, her family donated the land for Highland Park School, which she attended as a child. Their historic Victorian home still stands in Texarkana as a living monument to that legacy.

She remains deeply involved with the Rose Hill community and serves as the official historian for her family. Gamble-Williams has frequently pointed out gaps in local historical narratives. She also notes that the Texarkana Regional Museum can tell visitors when the city was “established,” but not when it was “founded.” Through her research and community work, she has helped illuminate the contributions of Native Americans, Black residents, and others. She has highlighted figures such as Silas Hunt, the first Black student at the University of Arkansas, and Texarkana’s connection to the first Black supermodel to walk the runways in Paris.

“Texarkana has so much history, and they all came from Native Americans, Indigenous Americans,” she emphasized. “My mother made history. I’ve made history. We are history makers.”

Distinguished Marine Career and Professional Achievements

Gamble-Williams served honorably in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring in 2003 as a Gunnery Sergeant (E-7). She served as Operations & Training Chief for Combat Service Support Detachment-21 (CSSD-21) at Cherry Point, North Carolina, and worked as a recruiter at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

Her awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3rd award), Meritorious Unit Commendation (2nd award), Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (4th award), and Expert Riflewoman qualification (2nd award).

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, is a Certified Master Tutor for Bowie and Miller Counties, and has taught English as a Second Language. Today, she serves as Chief Financial Officer and senior partner at Shield of Valor Executive Protection. She received her private investigator license in the Commonwealth of Virginia and has federal credentials from extensive training and work at Quantico alongside FBI agents.

Two Decades Helping Lead Toys for Tots in Texarkana

Shortly after retiring, Gamble-Williams returned to Texarkana and became active with the Toys for Tots for the Texarkana area. In October of last year (2025), local police and fire department officials reached out to her to obtain toys, confirming her established role. According to Gamble-Williams, she told them that they would not be placed ahead of other groups and would be treated the same as everyone else because she wanted to make sure every child had an equal chance to receive toys and have a Merry Christmas.

“I love to see the joy of the minority babies and making sure they get toys, too… Sometimes they have not, and I made sure that wasn’t going to happen on my watch.”

Events Leading to Courthouse Arrest

According to Gamble-Williams, a warrant was issued in October 2025, but she said it was not entered into the state system. A few months later, when Gamble-Williams went to the Bowie County Courthouse in 2026 to ask the Commissioners Court to rescind the warrant — while also trying to resolve her license-to-carry permit — she was arrested on the spot.

Bess Gamble-Williams said the situation began in October 2025 when a new lieutenant at the local Marine Corps Reserve unit contacted her by phone. He introduced himself and said he was preparing to plan meetings for the upcoming Toys for Tots program. She noted that she believed he called her because her name was listed as the ambassador in the unit’s materials. When she asked about the meeting location, he replied that they had not yet secured a place. Later, Gamble-Williams said she offered to bring them an informational brochure and her contact card.

Thirty minutes after that conversation, she said she received a call about Toys for Tots from a Harley-Davidson representative involved with the bikers who traditionally offer support. The caller told her he had heard about “the great things” she was doing for the program locally.

The following day, however, Gamble-Williams said she received a call from the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office regarding what they claimed were two complaints — presumably about the brochure. She also stated that the lieutenant appeared to have changed his position from the previous day.

Gamble-Williams believes civilians interested in taking over the Toys for Tots program may have influenced the situation, particularly because she insisted on treating all groups equally. She steadfastly maintains she did nothing wrong, stating, “They’re reaching.”

Unusually Negative Local Media Coverage Causes Community Confusion

For a woman as well-known and long-serving in Texarkana as Bess Gamble-Williams, the negative local media coverage derived from what her supporters call biased police information has led to confusion in the community. Some residents have even questioned whether she is a private investigator — despite her clear Virginia license and decades of documented service. This negative tone stands in stark contrast to the positive recognition she has received for years across local TV stations and publications.

Fellow Marines Rally: “She Has Backup”

Jason C. Lisby and Stephen J. Pettus II immediately came to Texarkana to support her. Both are decorated combat veterans and leaders of Shield of Valor Executive Protection and the Valor Elite Youth Enrichment Foundation.

“A lot of people… are intimidated,” said Lisby. “She has backup.”

“Till the day I die, we’re going to be together,” added Gamble-Williams.

A Firecracker Personality Dedicated to the Underdog

Described as a “firecracker” with a big, energetic personality, Gamble-Williams is direct, transparent, and deeply compassionate. “What I do helps the underdog. I’m for the underdog.”

Mrs. Gamble-Williams' nephew practices at the highly regarded Tyson Law Firm in Dallas, Texas, and is widely considered an excellent attorney. The family is consulting experienced counsel as they prepare their defense.

Highland Park Baptist Welcomes New Senior Pastor

Texarkana, Texas — Highland Park Baptist Church has called Monte Rowse as its new Senior Pastor. Rowse has been serving as pastor of First Baptist Church in Hackberry, Louisiana in the Lake Charles area. He is expected to begin his ministry at Highland Park in the next two weeks.

During his time at First Baptist Church Hackberry, Pastor Monte guided the congregation through the devastating impacts of Hurricane Laura in 2020. The Category 4 storm caused widespread destruction in the southwestern Louisiana community, damaging homes, infrastructure, and church facilities. Under his leadership, the church played a key role in recovery efforts, providing support and hope to residents in the aftermath of the hurricane. He served there for 14 years with his wife Renée Rowse.

The transition at Highland Park follows the departure of Reverend Kevin Myers, who faithfully served as the church's Lead Pastor. He was called to the position in December 2003 and recently concluded more than 22 years of ministry there. Myers has taken a position as Project Manager III in the Finance and Administration department at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Under Myers’ leadership, the congregation experienced significant growth, and the church dedicated a new campus to accommodate its expanding ministries and community outreach.

82 Years to the Day: Texarkana WWII Pilot Lost in ‘Black Sunday’ Storm Comes Home

HOUSTON, Texas — On April 16, 2026, 1st Lt. Austin K. Neely of Texarkana was laid to rest with full military honors beneath a wide Texas sky — exactly 82 years to the day after a ferocious Pacific storm swallowed his P-38J Lightning and ended his final mission.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency had announced the 26-year-old pilot’s identification on December 1, 2025, bringing an extraordinary sense of symmetry and closure to a story that had remained unfinished since April 16, 1944. Neely’s burial on the precise anniversary of his disappearance offered a rare and poignant end to one of World War II’s most haunting non-combat tragedies.

A ranch-raised airman with the 433rd Fighter Squadron, 475th Fighter Group, Neely had taken off from Nadzab, New Guinea, as part of a 16-plane escort protecting bombers headed for Japanese targets. The mission began under clear skies. It ended in chaos when a sudden, violent tropical storm slammed into the formation. Historians later named the disaster “Black Sunday” — the deadliest single-day non-combat loss in U.S. Army Air Forces history. Thirty-seven aircraft went down. Fifty-four airmen, including Neely, never returned. His Lightning was last sighted disappearing into the churning clouds.

For decades, the young Texan’s fate stayed unknown. In 1949, villagers in New Guinea guided officials to a crumpled P-38 wreck in the jungle. Remains recovered at the site could not be identified and were eventually buried as “Unknown X-5261” at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl, in Honolulu.

Modern forensic science and tireless investigation finally solved the mystery. Additional aircraft wreckage discovered near the original site in 2008 supplied key historical evidence. In 2023, the unknown remains were exhumed and transferred to the DPAA laboratory. Experts used dental records, skeletal analysis, and advanced DNA testing — including mitochondrial and Y-chromosome comparisons — to confirm the identity as 1st Lt. Austin K. Neely.

His name had long been etched on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. A small bronze rosette will now be placed beside it, the official symbol that this airman has been accounted for.

At Thursday’s graveside service in Houston, a flag-draped casket was carried to the site, followed by a riderless horse with boots reversed in the stirrups. Six modern fighter jets streaked overhead in the missing-man formation, one aircraft peeling sharply upward and climbing into the blue. As a lone bugler sounded “Taps,” the wind carried the faint scent of Gulf air and open prairie — echoes of the Texas landscape Neely had known as a boy.

For his family and a nation that never stopped searching, the long wait ended on the very day the storm had claimed him. A pilot who left home more than eighty years ago had finally returned — on the same date the Pacific had taken him.

Gary VanDeaver Forced Into Runoff with Chris Spencer For Texas House District 1

District 1 Rep. VanDeaver paid a heavy price in Tuesday's election for his seemingly unpopular stance against school choice and his insistence that Democrats should be allowed to be committee chairs in the Republican-controlled State House of Representatives.

Unofficial results showed that VanDeaver's two opponents, Chris Spencer and Dale Huls, received almost 55% of the vote in Bowie County, embarrassing the longtime representative from New Boston, who received just 45% at home.

However, Gov. Greg Abbott's HD1 endorsed candidate, Chris Spencer, received a whopping 56% vote on his Cass County home turf.

Mudslinging All-Around

The race for Texas HD1 has been controversial as VanDeaver allies have hurled mud at Spencer and Huls while Spencer has thrown dirt back at VanDeaver.

However, Dale Huls, a former NASA engineer and Air Force Veteran, seemed to stay above the fray and made a respectable showing after being endorsed by Attorney General Ken Paxton—but he lacked funds for TV advertising.

VanDeaver's Longtime Friend Also Faces Runoff

Gary VanDeaver controversially brought Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan to Texarkana for a fundraiser - just as he was being censured by the Texas GOP in February.

On Tuesday, Phelan was also forced into a runoff with David Covey in HD 21—a shocking outcome for a Texas House Speaker. However, many Texas political pundits forecast it following Phelan's unpopular push to impeach Attorney General Paxton.

VanDeaver also faced blowback for voting to impeach the popular Attorney General.

Runoff for Spencer and VanDeaver

With no candidate achieving a majority, the top two vote-getters - Gary VanDeaver and Chris Spencer - will advance to a runoff election to decide the Republican nomination for this district.

The vote totals for the Texas House District 1 race reveal a competitive three-way Republican primary contest. Incumbent Gary VanDeaver received 13,912 votes, securing 45.53% of the overall vote. As the incumbent, VanDeaver entered as the frontrunner but fell short of the 50% threshold needed to win the nomination outright.

Chris Spencer emerged as VanDeaver's top challenger, earning 13,155 votes for 43.05% of the total. Spencer performed strongly and came within striking distance of the incumbent.

Dale Huls trailed in third place with 3,490 votes, accounting for 11.42% of the total ballots cast.
The vote percentages show that VanDeaver and Spencer were locked in an ultra-competitive race, separated by just 2.48 percentage points.

This sets the stage for a fierce runoff battle between the incumbent and the challenger. VanDeaver's failure to win outright despite being the incumbent could signal voter dissatisfaction or a desire for change among Republican primary voters in this district.

What happens next?

While VanDeaver's incumbency status provides advantages heading into the runoff, Gov. Abbott's and AG Paxton's strong opposition could turn the election for Spencer.

Ultimately, the race may resemble the US House runoff between Ralph Hall and John Ratcliffe in 2014, which was primarily fought in Texarkana and Rockwall. In the end, challenger Ratcliffe beat the longtime incumbent Hall.

The runoff election will be held on May 28, 2024.

Attorney General Ken Paxton Wants Voters to Choose Dale Huls for State Rep.

Ken Paxton wants Northeast Texans to slam the door on Gary VanDeaver of New Boston in State House, District 1 as he enthusiastically asked citizens to vote for Dale Huls.

On Wednesday evening, a close friend of Ken Paxton, who is also a member of the Texas House, said the Texas Attorney General believes Gary VanDeaver is "problematic and annoying" and a "stooge" of embattled Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan.

The representative who asked to remain anonymous told Texarkana News that the Attorney General would be happy for VanDeaver to "kick rocks" and allow Dale Huls to help him change Austin alongside like-minded conservatives.

Ken Paxton endorses Dale Huls

This comes one day after Ken Paxton delivered a full-throated video endorsement of Huls on Tuesday, February 20, and an X (formerly Twitter) endorsement of Dale Huls on Sunday, February 18.

"Texas, it is time to clean house," Paxton said in the message. "With your help, we will redeem the Texas Courts and The Texas House."

In Paxton's video message, the Attorney General strongly endorsed Huls. He said: "I'm here to support my friend Dale Huls. I know that Dale will be the fighter that you and I both hope for when we vote for somebody to go to Austin."

He added: "I want to encourage you today to vote for Dale Huls for State Representative."

Patriot groups call Huls a "true conservative"

Dale Huls is winning support from hardcore Republican voters and Patriot groups for his hardline conservative stances. The former NASA engineer and Air Force veteran is also seen as highly intelligent, and the Texas state representative who is friendly with the Attorney General said Paxton believes Huls could soon be a "thought leader" in the Texas House of Representatives if chosen by District 1 voters.

He added: "We need people like Dale Huls or [Chris] Spencer and, sadly, less wishy-washy elected officials like Gary."

Candidate Huls has noted his frustration with Gary VanDeaver for his positions on school choice and VanDeaver's belief that Republicans in the Texas House should allow Democrats to have committee chairmanships.

House Speaker who impeached Paxton comes to Texarkana for Gary VanDeaver

Rep. Gary VanDeaver doesn't seem to mind that Texas' most conservative voters don't seem to like Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan.

In fact, VanDeaver welcomed the man who worked hard to impeach Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to Texarkana on Tuesday, Feb. 6, for a fundraiser at Northridge Country Club.

A controversial politician

The House Speaker's popularity took a nosedive after the impeachment in his own district. More than 49% of his Republican constituents disapproved of Phelan. Click here to read the poll.

VanDeaver voted for Paxton's impeachment, which has caused him some election headaches. The attorney General has endorsed VanDeaver's opponent, Dale Huls.

Trump endorsed his opponent

Donald Trump has endorsed the House Speaker's Republican primary challenger, David Covey.

Even though Phelan publicly said he had voted for Trump twice and would vote again for him in 2024, Trump was nonplussed and mentioned the "fraudulent impeachment."

The former president said: "Words, however, do not mitigate the Absolute Embarrassment Speaker Phelan inflicted upon the State of Texas and our Great Republican Party!"

A tough race

Gary VanDeaver is facing a tough race to retain his District 1 House seat as he also faces opposition from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has endorsed another one of VanDeaver's opponents.

VanDeaver has been supported by the Democrat-leaning Texas State Teachers Association, which endorsed VanDeaver in 2022 alongside another endorsement for Beto O'Rourke for Governor.

Gary VanDeaver's Missing Capital 'D' from election ballot: Election Headache or Campaign Strategy?

House District 1 State Rep. Gary VanDeaver faces heavy opposition from Texas Governor Greg Abbott and popular Attorney General Ken Paxton. And now it seems the representative's trademark capital "D" is not listed on the March 4 Republican Party ballot in Bowie County.

What happened to the capital "D"?

It is unclear how the lowercase "d" replaced the capital "D," which is prominent in all of VanDeaver's advertising materials, and some are wondering if it came from the candidate himself or was just an error in the original filing paperwork.

Texarkana News contacted Bowie County Elections Administrator Pat McCoy and asked about the missing capital "D" in VanDeaver's name.

"We publish those the way that the state gives us that information," McCoy said. "For instance, there was one candidate who wanted a period after his middle initial, and another candidate did not. So it's crazy. We do whatever they want."

McCoy said: "More than likely, the candidate put it that way." However, the elections administrator reiterated that the county was required to list the name exactly as received from the state.

Ballots in Paris are different

However, the sample ballot from Lamar County, which includes Paris, Texas, does show VanDeaver's name with the capital "D" and not the lowercase "d" for the March 4 Republican Primary.

Texarkana News spoke with Tricia Johnson, the elections administrator for Lamar County. She said she places the names on ballots exactly as the party chair gives them to her.

But Johnson clearly did not wish to speculate why there is a difference in VanDeaver's name in Bowie and Lamar counties. "This is just my job, and I do it. I don't want to get involved in any of that," she said.

However, she said it was too late to do anything about a lowercase or capital "D," stating: "ballots have already gone out."

Large turnout expected

Elections Administrator McCoy said a large turnout is expected because of the presidential primary and other prominent races.

"We expect better turnout than in the prior November election, and we expect good turnout in Bowie County because of the state representative race."

Flieder, along with his wife, could not get anyone to come to the door when they arrived at the Olalde's home, police said. Finally, another family member arrived and forced entry into the house. Once inside, they both confronted Olalde, who was alle wielding a firearm.

Four dead

During a standoff, police said Olalde allegedly confessed to killing his family members and called 911. The bodies of the victims were later found in a bathroom. Numerous spent cartridge casings on the floor, and blood splatter throughout the home. The victims appeared to have been shot in various places before being taken to the bathroom.

The Nash police and other law enforcement agencies arrived and took Olalde into custody without further incident. He is currently held at the Bi-State Justice Center in Texarkana on a $10 million bond.

She wanted to be a teacher

Texarkana school district that lied to voters narrowly wins bond election

A Texarkana, Texas school district that brazenly lied during its bond election squeaked out a narrow victory on Propositions A & B.

With 99% of the reported vote, Texarkana ISD's $130 million "Proposition A" won with a vote total of 3,534 to 3,311. "Proposition B" for $59 million was even more narrow but still won with a vote of 3,465 to 3,327.

A win is a win

The closeness of the vote will likely not matter to the dishonest school district and its leader, Supt. Doug Brubaker. All the lying superintendent needed for a victory was one vote over 50%, and he got it. Read more about TISD's election lies by clicking here.

Now that voters know the school district is less than honest, how the money is spent will come into complete focus.

Challenges expected

Three seats on the TISD Board of Trustees will be decided in 2023, and some citizens have already mentioned their interest in joining the Board to make sure the bond money is spent wisely.

The Board of Trustee seats up for grabs in 2023 are Gerald Brooks in District 2, Amy Bowers in District 4, and Fred Norton (At-large) in District 7. It is currently unclear if any or all current Board members want to continue their work on the Board.

Post-election discussions online indicate that current Board members should expect challengers - with the top issues likely being honesty, ethics, and fiscal responsibility.

Sanders, daughter of former Arkansas Governor and Beech Street Baptist Church pastor Mike Huckabee, declared victory with a bold speech on Tuesday night.

Governor-elect Sanders is the former press secretary for President Donald Trump. The former president endorsed Sanders early and remained proud of his endorsement throughout the campaign.

Sanders announced in mid-September that she had undergone surgery for Stage 1 thyroid cancer and said she is now cancer free.

The cancer diagnosis took Sanders off the campaign trail, but the public - especially conservatives - rallied around the next Governor of Arkansas.

Sanders and her family remain friends with many Texarkana residents who have supported the family since her father, Mike Huckabee, unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate in 1992 - but later won the race for Lt. Governor and later ascended to the Governor's mansion following the legal troubles of Gov. Jim Guy Tucker.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. She married her husband Bryan in 2010, and the couple has three children.

FIFTY YEAR SERVICE AWARD for Former Lone Star Army Ammunition Project Engineer

Brig. Gen. Gus Perna awards Paul Woodhouse with the Maj. Gen. (R) John C. Raaen, Jr. Achievement Award in 2011 for his work on the Radford Army Ammunition Plant contract.

For five decades, Paul Woodhouse has worked as a Civilian employee for the U.S. Army. And his second job was in Texarkana, Texas, beginning in 1974 at Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant.

The 72-year-old was recently recognized for his dedication and received a 50 years of service award.

The Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics (G-4) of the Joint Munitions Command, based at the Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois, appreciates the fact that others have noticed his longevity.

"It's one day at a time. It's been quite a while," Woodhouse said. "I found challenging assignments in the Army and the change in the successive commands over the decades."

When Woodhouse began his career in government, the Vietnam War was taking place. Woodhouse presumed he wouldn't get drafted once he graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1972. So choosing the path he did was a way to give back.

"In 1973, I pulled No. 332 in the Selective Service lottery, so I was basically not going to be called into the draft," Woodhouse said. "Along with the need to have a job and to try to contribute to what was going on at the time in the Vietnam engagement, I thought I'd do my thing for four years or so and see what else materialized in the meantime."

It turns out Woodhouse found his calling, and he's not planning on retiring soon.

Does Woodhouse have any advice for new employees?

"Training and involvement," he said. "Jump in, figure it out through communications with other people — get it done. Don't expect a syllabus to be handed to you that says this is the path. There's a lot of discovery that must go with any assignment."

Woodhouse's dad influenced his career choice

Woodhouse began working as an engineer intern at the Ammunition Procurement and Supply Agency in Joliet, Illinois, in the summer of 1972.

His father, who worked as a safety engineer for the operating contractor of the facility, suggested Woodhouse should apply there, as it was close to his family's home in Lockport, Illinois.

The following year, Woodhouse relocated to Rock Island when the Munitions Command merged with the Weapons Command to form the Armaments Command, and he served as a project engineer.

"I was working on modernization and expansion projects," said Woodhouse, who has worked under every commander of ARMCOM's realignments through its current successor, JMC.

Woodhouse ended up in "The Lone Star State" in 1974, where he served as a project engineer at the Army Ammunition Plant in Texarkana, Texas.

Two years later, Woodhouse returned to Rock Island, and the move was a career developmental decision.

Woodhouse, who has held numerous assignments and performed various roles on Arsenal Island, was named to his current position in 2014.

What is Woodhouse's job?

The G-4 was created the same year Woodhouse was named its director, and what exactly does he have a hand in?

"We're basically focused on property — personal property, general equipment, and real property," Woodhouse said of his department. "We try to help the installations maintain complete and accurate property records for the real property structures, land, and the general equipment they have.

"We also take care of Building 350 from the standpoint of routine and emergency maintenance work orders," Woodhouse added. "We run consolidated supply provisioning for all headquarters JMC in the building."

Three metal rods that held the sign remained in the ground inches from Texas High School on the corner of Kennedy Lane and Summerhill Road, which indicates the sign was ripped down and stolen.

Radio news reporter Tara Holley, who has not given an opinion on any Texas elections, described the sign as "an artful depiction of Jesus with a verse from the Bible. The verse across the bottom of the billboard is from the Book of Romans, Verse 12:12."

Holley said: "This is a verse many of us in East Texas have heard many times—whether at church when reading the Bible, or perhaps in a group Bible study. It's a lovely verse."

Romans 12:12 says: "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer."

Theft of free speech?

A local home healthcare worker who voted today at the Sullivan Performing Arts Center on the Texas High School campus said: "All the pro-bond election signs are still here. And I don't think there is a Jesus kleptomaniac out there, so this is just outright theft and silencing free speech. This is chilling."

TISD and its superintendent Doug Brubaker have been dogged by complaints that it has lied during the campaign about safety and security measures.

Many opponents of the TISD bond issue felt the Jesus sign represented a well-deserved "slap in the face by Jesus" to the school district and administration for misleading voters during the election.

Oppressive taxation

The political action committee East Texas Christians Against Oppressive Taxes paid for the signs, and the group has also placed billboards and yard signs in communities. The group also opposes Smith County's $160 million bond election for a new courthouse. The largest city in Smith County is Tyler.

The cost of the TISD election is enormous - an eye-watering $365 million amortized over 30 years at 4.35% interest. And TISD has never had a bond election of more than $29 million, so the $189 million price tag is more than six and a half times greater than any previous proposal.

Pants on fire

Texarkana ISD has lied about its bond issue by telling voters on its campaign website that they must vote for the $130 million in spending on Proposition A to get campus security and fencing. But this is not true, and it is indeed a lie.

In June 2022, a month following the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting, the TISD Board of Trustees passed and approved funding for almost $2 million of the same security features promised in the bond election. Click here to read the TISD press release.

The approx $2 million for safety and security is already funded. But TISD is promising these already funded items as top features of Proposition A on its campaign website - TXKISD2022BOND.com: 1) Access Control at Every School 2) Security Fencing at Every School 3) Enhanced Fencing at THS Security 4) Window Film at School Entries.

And these are the same things that were approved and funded by the Board at the June 29 meeting.

The bottom of the banner lists a group called "East Texas Christians Against Oppressive Taxes" paid for the sign, and the group has also distributed yard signs.

At the bottom of the large banner, the well-known scripture Romans 12:12 is written. It says: "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer."

Signs and billboards in Tyler, too

Texarkana is not the only city that "East Texas Christians Against Oppressive Taxes" has targeted for its disapproval. A bond election for a new $160 million courthouse in Smith County has also drawn the group's ire.

Radio station KNUE said it confirmed the Christian group was a political action committee (PAC). It said yard signs and banners have been seen throughout Tyler, Texas, and around Smith County.

The irony of it all

Texarkana ISD is promoting Proposition A and Proposition B, but the school district has faced the most criticism for its dishonesty regarding the $130 million Proposition A. In fact, some bond election opponents have suggested the Christ banner is a well-deserved comeuppance for a school district like TISD that has been untruthful in the election.

Voters will decide tomorrow

Early voting is over, and citizens will make their voices heard tomorrow, November 8.

The massive spending proposal is six and a half times larger than any previous TISD bond issue. In addition, it is almost five times larger than any city, county, or school district bond election in the history of Bowie County.

Voters have been questioning why the school district wants to raise property taxes on citizens right now when construction costs are at an all-time high, and many people have been forced to find second and third jobs to make ends meet.

When Bowie County officials mailed tax notices to property owners a few weeks ago, the mood among many shifted decidedly downward.

This was because many citizens suddenly realized that paying large amounts by the end of the year was impossible for them - unless they skipped a house payment or cut back on food and gas.

At the same time, Texarkana ISD is asking voters to fund its entire $189 million wishlist with an ill-timed bond election - for an amount more than six and a half times greater than TISD's largest ever bond election.

Rough economic waters

Tough financial choices are being made every day. In fact, a TISD homeowner named Trae quietly told Texarkana News about his family's food struggles at a Texarkana Wal-Mart store. He said he was embarrassed his family had been forced to stop buying wheat bread for $3.34 and now purchases what he calls "the Great Value dollar white bread." But he was shocked that even the "dollar bread" had already increased in price by 10% since he bought it last week.

The Texarkana father said his family could no longer afford to eat out - even at McDonald's. He said: "A large cola at McDonald's is now about $2.00 with tax, and they were just one dollar a few weeks ago. So we've cut back everything and still can't make ends meet. So I'm looking for a second job."

Not the right time for $189 million in spending

What does Trae think about Supt. Doug Brubaker and TISD asking for $189 million ($365 million with amortized interest) right now.?

He said: "I see those d**m signs saying 'Vote for the Kids' and these guys begging for money so they can build a bunch of new buildings when everybody else has to cut back because of all the inflation. How does that even make sense?"

Trae is not alone. We talked with Walmart employees, and several told us that Texarkana customers come in more often and make smaller purchases - as discretionary spending has rapidly dwindled.

A Walmart security associate said: "There are lots and lots of people struggling. But others are doing fine, and their biggest problem is the shortage of Milky Way [candy bars]. But I feel sorry for guests who can't afford inexpensive necessities, and I give people some coins if they need a little bit to check out. But not every associate can afford to do that."

Bad news for local companies

Superintendent Doug Brubaker and TISD have been stealthily moving forward with their plans for the 2022 bond election for more than a year and a half. But, sadly, it is amid the most significant increase in construction costs in most citizens' lifetimes.

But with all this planning, where is the promise to spend a certain percentage of the money locally? Other school districts with bond elections promise to hire local firms. Why not TISD?

Unfortunately, whether TISD will offer local companies a fair chance to bid for bond election contracts is unclear. Sure, there will probably be a little spending locally. But where will the mega-millions go? That's the real question.

Citizens should also ask if companies chosen by TISD will be strongly encouraged (or required) to hire workers living in Texarkana before bringing in laborers from across the region or nation? Of course, companies should be directed to hire locals first. It's the right thing to do.

Plus, keeping as much spending as possible within the city is supremely important because Texarkana, Texas, citizens expect and deserve to have as much of the massive $189 million as possible stay here.

The usual suspects

It seems likely that Texarkana will see itself invaded by the same educational-building companies that appear to have a monopoly on school-building projects across the region if the bond election is approved by voters.

Yet, simultaneously, there is a real possibility that TISD will squander millions of dollars on vaguely worded "project costs" and construction management firms.

Why do we believe this? First, it aligns with what happened when Doug Brubaker was superintendent in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Voters can stop the madness

What will happen if the TISD bond election fails and voters stop the $189 million in spending before it starts?

Fort Smith insiders tell us that Doug Brubaker will never quit with a loss. As a result, Texarkana ISD voters might expect a more modest bond election proposal in May 2023 or November 2023 - depending on how big of a loss TISD faced in the November 8, 2022 election.

In the meantime, Texarkana voters, such as hardworking father Trae, will be looking for a second - and possibly third - job. And if the TISD bond election passes, Trae and others like him will likely be left wondering why $189 million in spending is not creating jobs and economic growth for companies in Texarkana.

No doubt, just about everyone else in Texarkana, Texas - not named Doug Brubaker - will be wondering the same thing.
