Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick

U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has resigned from Congress, stepping down from her seat representing Florida’s 20th Congressional District following a sweeping ethics investigation and ongoing federal criminal prosecution, according to her public announcement posted on social Tuesday.

Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democrat representing Tamarac and other parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties, leaves office after a bipartisan House Ethics Committee found she committed 25 violations of House rules and federal campaign laws. The panel concluded there was “clear and convincing evidence” supporting the allegations after a yearslong investigation into her financial activities.

She resigned shortly before a scheduled congressional hearing to decide her fate.

“We should be very careful about the precedent we are setting,” she said in her resignation announcement. “In this country, we do not punish people before due process is complete. We do not allow allegations alone to override the will of the people. That is a dangerous path, and one that should concern every American, regardless of party.”

At the center of the case against the now-former congresswoman is approximately $5 million in COVID-era disaster relief funds tied to a healthcare company associated with her family, Trinity Health Care Services. Investigators determined the funds were overpaid through a clerical error connected to a FEMA-funded vaccination staffing contract in 2021 and never repaid.

According to a federal indictment, the money was deposited into accounts controlled by Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, and then routed through a network of entities and individuals.

Ethics investigators concluded that those funds were ultimately used to support her 2022 congressional campaign, despite public claims that the campaign was self-funded. Federal prosecutors have charged Cherfilus-McCormick with multiple offenses, including allegations that she diverted public funds, laundered money, and facilitated illegal campaign contributions. She has pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing.

The House ethics ruling itself did not remove her from office, but it set the stage for potential disciplinary action, including expulsion, which would have required a two-thirds vote of the full House.

Cherfilus-McCormick, 47, was first elected in a 2022 special election after previously serving as chief executive of her family’s healthcare company. She won reelection in 2024 and quickly became a prominent political figure in South Florida.

If convicted in federal court, Cherfilus-McCormick faces decades behind bars.

Her resignation immediately vacates Florida’s 20th Congressional District seat, leaving constituents without representation at the moment.

The Kings Point Palace to host a night of laughs and classic songs featuring comedian Peter J. Fogel and vocalist Tony Quaranti.

Fogel brings his hit show Still Rockin’… As Long As I’m In Bed by 9 PM! to the stage, blending stand-up comedy, storytelling, and observational humor. His performance focuses on the realities of aging, changing technology, and the everyday moments audiences know well, delivered with quick wit and high energy. He has appeared for audiences nationwide with a style that mixes “boomer” nostalgia with sharp, relatable comedy.

Quaranti, a Lake Worth-based singer, adds a musical finale to the show with his tribute to Frank Sinatra. His performance features favorites made famous by the legendary entertainer, bringing timeless standards and classic stage presence to the program.

Held on Saturday, April 25, at 8 p.m., the show is $20 for Kings Point residents and $25 for guests, with tickets available online and at the venue’s box office before and on the night of the concert.

The new box office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturdays, tickets can be purchased at the Clubhouse from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at the Palace from 7 to 8:15 p.m.

The Tamarac North Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce will host its annual RISE Health, Wealth & Small Business Expo on Thursday, April 23, bringing together local businesses, professionals, and residents for an evening focused on networking, growth, and community connection.

The free event is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, where more than 60 vendors are expected to participate.

Designed as both a business-to-business and a business-to-community experience, the expo will offer entrepreneurs opportunities to showcase their services, generate leads, and build partnerships while engaging directly with local decision-makers.

Attendees can explore exhibitor booths, connect with employers, and take part in interactive demonstrations, health screenings and financial education sessions. The morning will begin with a “10K Step” walk around the field at 9 a.m., encouraging attendees to start the day with light cardio in a relaxed, community setting. A woman was taken into custody after police say she twerked in front of them inside a Lauderhill 7-Eleven while soliciting customers for cash and drugs, according to an arrest report.

According to a Lauderhill Police Department arrest report, Veronica Ericka Whitsett, 24, of Fort Lauderdale, was taken into custody just before 7:00 a.m. on April 12, following complaints from store employees at the 7-11 at 5590 West Oakland Park Boulevard. 

Officers responding to the convenience store were flagged down by an assistant manager, who told officers Whitsett had been soliciting customers for money and drugs while ignoring repeated requests to leave the business.

When officers made contact with Whitsett inside the store, the situation escalated further.

According to the report, Whitsett began pressing her buttocks against the store counter and “doing a shaking motion” before extending her hands toward the responding deputy and asking for money.

Investigators say she then continued the behavior, alternating between twerking her buttocks and her chest, even after being told multiple times to leave the property.

Officers attempted to escort Whitsett out of the store, but she allegedly refused to comply. After repeated warnings, she was arrested.

Whitsett was charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing on an occupied structure or conveyance.

Whitsett was transported to the Broward County Main Jail following her arrest.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Tamarac District introduced its Police Explorers program during the April 7 commission meeting.

The Explorers were disbanded in Tamarac during COVID and have been brought back. During Broward Public Schools’ spring break, ten teenagers aged 14 to 18 participated in a training program.

The Explorers meet on Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tamarac district headquarters, 7515 NW 88th Avenue. Led by Deputy Louis Masucci, they learn basic law enforcement procedures, operations, and participate in physical fitness.

“This is an opportunity for young people to learn about law enforcement. Some may eventually apply to the police academy, and we will help them go through the process. In addition to these benefits, the Explorers also develop leadership skills,” said Masucci.

Reflecting on the program’s return, Mayor Michelle J. Gomez said she was glad to see the Explorer program returning to Tamarac.

Tamarac will soon have a new warehouse facility.

During the April 7 meeting, the commission approved an ordinance on first reading to change the land use designation from commercial to industrial for 6.1 acres at 5600 North Hiatus Road.

The subject property is the former location of the Gold Coast Schools, which included the Gold Coast Professional School and other professional training schools. The property currently includes an approximately 20,000-square-foot building, along with parking, landscaping, and infrastructure, according to city records.

The change from commercial to industrial is necessary to facilitate the development of the proposed industrial warehouse facility. This designation permits a range of industrial uses, such as manufacturing, production, warehousing, wholesale operations, freight movement, and waste and salvage facilities. It also allows communication facilities, recreation, community facilities, utilities, and limited commercial and retail businesses, according to city information.

Tamarac 5K Run Club. {David Volz}

The Tamarac 5K Run Club held a 5K at Tephford Park on Saturday morning. Mayor Michelle J. Gomez and Wendy Julien lead an exercise session and a walk-run on the second Saturday of each month.

“We have been getting a good group of runners. I want to encourage exercise and fitness, and this walk-run gives people a chance to get together and exercise in a pleasant atmosphere,” said Gomez.

Julien begins the walk-run with light calisthenics and stretching. Participants can then choose to walk or run two laps around the park.

On April 18, Gomez will lead the Rhythm & Wellness event at the Tamarac Community Center at 2351 North University Drive.

The event will be free and will begin with a walk around the field at 9 a.m., then move indoors for Zumba from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and Line Dancing from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. There will be a juice bar, massages, blood pressure screening, and presentations on nutrition and healthcare. According to Gomez, there will also be a Double Dutch jump rope event.

The event will take place on Tuesday, April 21, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Lucky Scoops Ice Cream.

Designed as a casual get-together, the social will offer free ice cream, conversation, and an opportunity for veterans to build camaraderie while strengthening connections within the local community. Organizers say the event is meant to celebrate service and provide a welcoming space for veterans across Tamarac.

The event is held in partnership with the Kings Point Veterans Club and Lucky Scoops Ice Cream.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office in Tamarac responded to various incidents from March 31 to April 6, 2026. Below is a detailed account of the incidents and arrests handled by local law enforcement during this period.

Incidents

Auto Theft – Motorcycle: A motorcycle was reported stolen from an apartment complex parking lot between March 31 and April 1. No suspects have been identified.

Auto Theft: A vehicle was reported stolen in Tamarac; however, investigators were unable to obtain sufficient information to locate it. Estimated loss: $10,000.

Battery: Deputies responded to a fight at Walmart on North Pine Island Road on April 1. Parties were separated, and the incident remains under investigation.

Fraud: A victim reported losing approximately $17,000 in a fraud scheme where money was transported via rideshare to a suspect.

Fraud: A delayed report revealed a stolen IRS check valued at $5,207 that was fraudulently deposited. The victim believes the check was taken from their mailbox.

Theft – Auto Parts: Multiple vehicles were targeted overnight on April 1–2, with wheels stolen and vehicles left on bricks. Estimated losses ranged from $1,600 to $3,000.

Theft – All Other: Sunglasses were reported stolen from a bag at the Tamarac Library. Estimated loss: $300.

Missing Person: An endangered adult missing since February was entered into national databases after last being traced traveling out of state.

Robbery: A domestic dispute escalated into a robbery when a suspect forcibly took an iPhone and luggage from a victim.

Auto Theft: A vehicle stolen overnight on April 3 was later recovered with assistance from another agency.

Death Investigation: Deputies responded to a death investigation on April 3.

Battery: A man was arrested after spitting on a bus driver during an argument over spilled food.

Aggravated Assault: A suspect was arrested after threatening a victim with a knife during a disturbance.

Weapons Violation: A convicted felon was arrested after being found in possession of a firearm during a traffic crash investigation.

Auto Theft: A 2007 Ford van was reported stolen between April 1 and April 5.

Theft – All Other: A wallet and cellphone were reported stolen from a residence. Estimated loss: $270.

Fire: A vehicle fire was reported on April 5. No foul play was suspected.

Death Investigation: A man was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Fraud: A victim reported unauthorized charges to an EBT card.

Other Incidents

Several domestic disturbances were reported throughout the week, all verbal in nature with no arrests.

Multiple Baker Act incidents involved individuals experiencing mental health crises.

Suspicious incidents included unusual interactions and reports involving unknown individuals; no crimes were confirmed.

Information reports included property damage, disputes, and delayed incidents without criminal findings.

A man is facing multiple felony charges after Broward County deputies say he assaulted and forced a teenage victim to perform oral sex on him during a series of incidents that began earlier this month.

According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Jordan Josiah Roberts, 18, of North Lauderdale, was arrested March 27 and charged with sexual battery involving a victim between the ages of 12 and 17, domestic battery by strangulation, and false imprisonment.

Records show deputies responded to a report of a sexual battery on March 26 in which the teenage victim told investigators she had been communicating with Roberts for about a month and agreed to meet him after school earlier that week.

Authorities say Roberts picked the victim up and drove her to a parking lot, where the victim told deputies that after initially sitting in the front seat, she was moved to the backseat, where Roberts allegedly made repeated demands for oral sex, threatening to hit her if she refused. 

Investigators say the victim reported being struck and physically restrained during the encounter. She told deputies she attempted to leave the vehicle but was unable to do so because the doors were locked. Eventually, the victim told police she was forced to perform the sexual act out of fear for her safety before escaping the vehicle and walking home. 

The affidavit also outlines additional allegations from earlier encounters between the two, including claims that Roberts placed his hands around the victim’s neck during previous meetings in a repeated effort to choke her. 

Following the incident, detectives located Roberts at his residence and took him into custody. After being advised of his rights, Roberts told investigators the encounter was consensual and provided messages he claimed supported that assertion, according to the report.

However, investigators noted that other messages reviewed during the investigation included statements from the victim indicating she had been hurt and had visible bruising.

Roberts was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Two deserving dogs at Broward County Animal Care are searching for loving homes, each offering companionship, personality, and plenty of affection.

Ringo (A2473277), a 2-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, is a 65-pound pup with a striking red merle coat and unique eyes—each a different color. Shelter staff say Ringo was initially fearful when he arrived, but has since come out of his shell and is now a happy, easygoing dog. He enjoys walks, yard time, and treats, and already knows how to sit. He also appears to be housebroken, keeping his kennel clean.

Zeus (A1912983), a 9-year-old Harrier mix, is a 63-pound senior dog with plenty of energy. Found as a stray in Fort Lauderdale in early March, Zeus was never reclaimed and is now ready for a second chance. Despite his age, he remains playful and affectionate, enjoying games of fetch, snacks, and snuggles. Staff says he would make a great addition to nearly any household, especially for those open to adopting a senior pet.

Both dogs are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to go home the same day. They also appear to be housebroken.

Broward County Animal Care, located at 2400 SW 42nd Street in Fort Lauderdale, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Adoption fees are minimal, with adopters only required to pay $25 for the Broward County registration tag.

Leaders and members of the Tamarac community came together at City Hall on the evening of April 7 to hold a candlelight vigil for Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer, who was murdered at her home in Coral Springs.

Vice Mayor Marlon Bolton read a proclamation and at times struggled to contain his emotions. The commission officially recognized April 7, 2026, as Honorable Nancy Metayer Day in Tamarac, and residents were called on to reflect on her legacy and to honor her memory through acts of kindness, unity, and civic engagement.

Bolton shared his feelings about Metayer as he read the proclamation. He described her as having served with honor and distinction as an elected official in Coral Springs, where she championed initiatives that promoted equity, expanded opportunities, and improved the quality of life for residents.

Her influence extended beyond municipal leadership as she engaged in conversations and initiatives at the county, state, and national levels, according to Bolton.

Metayer was known for her ability to bring people together, foster collaboration, and lead with strength and empathy, qualities that earned her respect among colleagues and leaders at every level of government, according to Bolton.

Her leadership was marked by advocacy for families, youth, and underserved communities, and her dedication to creating spaces where every voice could be heard and valued. She inspired people, especially women and young leaders, to pursue lives of purpose, leadership, and service, according to Bolton.

Before winning a seat on the Coral Springs commission, Metayer worked for the City of Tamarac as a community engagement liaison for former District 2 Commissioner and Vice Mayor Mike Gelin from November 2019 until June 2020, according to Joanna Johnson, spokesperson for Tamarac.

“She was soft spoken and brilliant and did a good job for Tamarac,” said Bolton.

Various faith leaders offered prayers. After the proclamation was read, the lights were dimmed, and those in attendance were encouraged to turn on a battery-powered light provided at the door and observe a moment of silence.

Two girls from Tamarac are among 16 contestants preparing for the 13th annual Miss Arc Broward Pageant, set for Sunday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale.

The family and sensory-friendly event features teens and girls ages 6 to 17 with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Organizers say the experience focuses on building confidence, friendships, and self-expression through months of preparation leading up to the pageant.

Local participants include Kori Armstrong, 12, and Azariah Clarke, 7, both of Tamarac.

“The Miss Arc Broward Pageant is so much more than a competition,” said Julie Price, president and CEO of Arc Broward. “It is a culmination of creating meaningful connections and a true sense of belonging.”

Each contestant is paired with a teen ambassador from a local high school who serves as a mentor throughout the process. Together, they rehearse performances and take part in social activities designed to build self-esteem.

Proceeds from the event support Arc Broward’s 24 programs serving individuals with disabilities across Broward County, from early childhood through adulthood.

This year also marks the organization’s 70th anniversary.

Community members are encouraged to attend and form cheer squads to support contestants. Students can earn community service hours for participating.

Individual tickets are $22.13, with discounted group rates available.

A Wells Fargo impersonation scam has claimed another victim in Broward County, with investigators alleging a $20,000 fraud scheme involving fake bank calls and couriers.

According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office affidavit, Kevon Christopher-Ky’Marley Shaw, 23, of Lauderhill, is accused of posing as a Wells Fargo representative as part of an elaborate scheme to defraud a victim out of thousands of dollars.

Investigators say the victim began receiving repeated phone calls in September 2025 from a man identifying himself as “Steven Fenton” from Wells Fargo’s fraud department. The caller appeared credible, allegedly providing accurate account details and claiming the victim’s funds were at risk as part of a federal investigation.

Under pressure, the victim was instructed to withdraw $20,000 in cash from a Wells Fargo branch on North Dixie Highway in Fort Lauderdale. Believing the request was legitimate, the victim removed the funds and handed the cash over to a courier who arrived at his residence shortly after.

The scheme didn’t stop there.

Authorities say the suspect continued contacting the victim, attempting to repeat the process and placing dozens of additional calls over several days. Growing suspicious, the victim eventually contacted law enforcement, prompting an investigation.

Detectives later coordinated a controlled operation in which the victim arranged another supposed cash handoff. When a courier arrived to pick up what he believed was another package, undercover officers intervened and began tracing the operation.

Through subpoenas and digital records – including Uber transaction data, phone numbers, and financial account activity – investigators linked the scheme to Shaw. Evidence showed the use of ride-share drivers to unknowingly transport cash packages, as well as bank accounts allegedly tied to the suspect.

A similar case resulted in the arrest of a suspect by the Coral Springs Police Department last week for similar charges. Though that version involved the victim depositing to a debit card, not a courier physically picking up the funds. 

Wells Fargo has attempted to make it clear that it will never request customers to withdraw cash as part of an investigation or send couriers to collect money.

Shaw was arrested on March 27 and has since been released from the Broward County Main Jail after posting a $30,000 bond.

Tamarac Fire Rescue honored James Murad as Firefighter of the Year during the April 7 commission meeting.

Murad, who has served as a Tamarac firefighter for 8 years, was recognized for his exceptional performance, particularly as lead instructor for the cadet program.

He has passed the examination and met all the requirements to become a lieutenant. Since then, he has served as the fire department’s acting lieutenant, and now Murad expects to be promoted to full lieutenant when the position opens.

“I am glad to be a firefighter because I can help others. I encounter people who are having their worst day, and I look for a way to help them get through it. If possible, I help them improve their situation,” said Murad.

Fire Chief Jonathan Frasher requested the proclamation for Murad.

The Kings Point Palace presents a tribute to Adele’s music, featuring vocalist Jenna DeVries and a live band performing some of the singer’s most well-known songs.

DeVries, a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who reached the Top 24 on American Idol, is known for her expressive vocal style. Backed by a full band, she performs a range of Adele’s catalog, from upbeat, high-energy songs to more intimate, piano-driven ballads. The setlist includes familiar hits such as “Hello,” “Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You,” and “Set Fire to the Rain.”

Held on Saturday, April 11, at 8 p.m., the show is $20 for Kings Point residents and $25 for guests, with tickets available online and at the venue’s box office before and on the night of the concert.

The new box office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturdays, tickets can be purchased at the Clubhouse from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at the Palace from 7 to 8:15 p.m.

Broward County Public Schools will join districts nationwide in observing Take a Child to Work Day on Thursday, April 23, 2026, offering students a firsthand look at the professional world beyond the classroom.

Open to students in grades 2 through 12, the annual initiative invites children to accompany a parent, guardian, or mentor to work, where they can observe daily responsibilities, meet colleagues, and learn about the education and skills required for various careers.

This year’s theme, “Take a Child to Work Day and Beyond – The Future is @ Work,” encourages students to think about long-term goals and explore the many pathways available to achieve them. Through hands-on exposure and conversations with professionals, students gain insight into careers that may shape their aspirations.

“Take a Child to Work Day is an opportunity for students to see the possibilities that await them beyond the classroom,” said Superintendent Howard Hepburn. “When students engage with professionals and observe the workplace firsthand, they gain valuable insight into how education, skills, and determination can open doors to future career success.”

The observance is coordinated by the district’s Career, Technical, Adult, and Community Education Department, which continues to expand opportunities for workforce readiness and career exploration.

Sometimes, the most troubling of times can lead to something positive.

Such is the case with a new Tamarac business created and launched in 2025. The journey began with Daniel Duva, a Colombian native and trained graphic designer, who came to the United States nine years ago. Four years ago, he became an American citizen.

Although trained in graphic design, he found it hard at first to find a job that utilized his creative talents and had to take other jobs.

Enter Kristine Petersen, originally from New Jersey, who relocated to South Florida. Her impressive resume includes many years of working for Fortune 500 companies.

What happened next came quite naturally. “We met and fell in love,” Petersen said, “and I saw his talent.”

Fast forward life’s clock to 2024. That’s when times got rough for the young couple. Duva was diagnosed with an advanced form of stage-4 metastatic prostate cancer. “It had already spread to my lymph nodes,” Duva said. And being only 41 years of age when the illness struck, Duva said many of his doctors told him he had been the youngest case they’d ever seen with this severity. “It was a pretty scary time,” he added.

Thankfully, he responded well to the various modes of treatment he received, including chemo and radiation therapies, and today he is in complete remission with no sign of detectable cancer on scanning. However, he does have to remain vigilant and have periodic blood tests.

The entire episode opened both their eyes to what’s really important. “We realized the importance of community,” he said. “We wanted to give back to the community.”

That’s also when he realized life is short and you have to live your dreams. Petersen quit her steady employment, and together they co-founded their new business, Daniel Duva Design, in 2025.

The Tamarac couple poured all Duva’s creativity into their new business. Daniel Duva Design is a concept built solely on real human creativity. They avoid using AI when working with their clients. “A lot of the businesses we help, these are real people,” Petersen said. “We build a personal connection with our clients.”

Daniel Duva Design offers a wide array of creative services to its business customers. Their graphic design studio doesn’t believe in a one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter approach. Instead, they craft fully personalized designs that reflect a customer’s vision, values, and goals.

“We have built a collaboration relating to all our clients,” Duva said. Among their services are branding using multiple logos, graphics (including printing, social media, and packaging), photography, specialized design, and illustration.

Plus, in October, they will be holding a dual-purpose event in which the work they have done for their clients will be showcased before the public. “It’s a celebration of us as well as them,” said Duva.

The event will also feature something of a more personal flavor they’d like to share with their customers and friends: their wedding.

The City of Tamarac will hold a vigil next week honoring Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, a public servant remembered for her leadership and dedication to the community.

Metayer Bowen was found dead inside her home on April 1.  Her husband, Stephen Bowen, has been charged with her murder.

The vigil is scheduled during the Tamarac City Commission meeting on Tuesday, April 7, beginning at 7 p.m. at Tamarac City Hall, 7525 NW 88th Ave. The public is invited to attend.

City officials said the event will provide an opportunity for residents to gather in remembrance and reflection. A proclamation will be presented in Metayer Bowen’s honor, and local dignitaries are expected to share remarks recognizing her life and service.

Tamarac leaders expressed condolences and reflected on her legacy.

“Deeply saddened by the shocking and tragic death of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer,” Mayor Michelle J. Gómez said. “Heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, and the Coral Springs community. She was compassionate, inspiring, and unwavering in her commitment to make the world better.”

Vice Mayor Marlon Bolton described Metayer Bowen as a “remarkable leader and dedicated public servant,” adding that she “led with grace, served with purpose, and inspired those around her every day.”

Commissioner Morey Wright also extended condolences, while Commissioner Krystal Patterson said Metayer Bowen’s life “was a testament to service, strength, and sisterhood.” Commissioner Dr. Kicia Daniel called her “a compassionate leader whose kindness and commitment to her community leave a lasting legacy.”

The City of Tamarac said Metayer Bowen’s impact will be felt for years to come and extended condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and the Coral Springs community.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office in Tamarac responded to various incidents through March 30, 2026. Below is a detailed account of the incidents and arrests handled by local law enforcement during this period.

Incidents

Burglary Conveyance

A 2019 Dodge Durango was broken into overnight between March 28 and March 29. The victim reported approximately $2,500 in stolen items, including a radio, batteries, and other vehicle components.

Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon

On March 28, a suspect armed with a hammer attempted to force entry into a residence and swung the weapon at occupants, placing them in fear of serious injury. The suspect was later taken into custody and charged.

Auto Theft

A vehicle was reported stolen sometime between March 18 and March 23.

Criminal Mischief

A 2006 Honda Accord was vandalized between March 26 and March 27, sustaining approximately $2,800 in damage, including punctured tires and body damage.

Fraud / Credit Card

A dispute involving alleged unauthorized use of a credit card totaling $1,019 resulted in no arrest due to conflicting statements.

Fraud (General)

A victim reported losing $200 in a scam.

Identity Theft

A victim reported being targeted in an identity theft case discovered on March 22.

Theft

A license plate was stolen from a parked vehicle overnight ($310 loss).

A package was reported stolen from a mailbox area ($250 loss).

A separate theft report involved a nominal loss.

Battery (Domestic)

A domestic incident resulted in an arrest after a suspect elbowed the victim in the stomach.

Battery (Neighbor Dispute)

A dispute between neighbors related to HOA postings resulted in a misdemeanor battery report.

Assault

A separate assault incident was reported on March 26.

Stalking

A victim reported receiving approximately 345 calls from an unknown number.

Animal Bites

A victim and their dog were attacked by a loose pitbull, resulting in minor injuries.

In a separate incident, a man was bitten while attempting to separate dogs.

Fire

A residential fire on Northwest 68th Terrace was determined to be caused by faulty electrical wiring.

Missing Person

A missing individual was located and transported to a rehabilitation facility.

Death Investigations

Two separate deaths were reported and determined to be from natural causes.

Other Incidents

Multiple domestic disturbances (non-criminal) involving verbal arguments only.

Several Baker Act cases where individuals were transported for mental health evaluation.

Reports involving civil disputes, custody-related concerns, and non-criminal threatening messages.

A traffic stop resulted in an arrest for driving with a suspended license (habitual offender).

A homeowner armed himself and warned he would shoot after a woman repeatedly demanded entry and tried forcing her way into the home while his wife and child slept inside, deputies said.

According to a Lauderhill Police report, on March 26, deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress, in which an unknown woman was attempting to break into a home through the front door.

The homeowner told deputies he and his family were asleep inside when loud banging and yelling at the front door woke them. When he went to investigate and briefly opened the door, he saw a woman, later identified as Magali Jimenez, 60, of Lauderhill, standing in the driveway. After telling her to leave, he quickly shut and locked the door.

Investigators say Jimenez then began pulling on the door, yelling, “Let me in the f***** house!” The victim told police she pulled so hard the French-style doors nearly separated, allowing her access to the home. 

Fearing for the safety of his wife and child, the man armed himself and issued a warning.

“If you come in, I will shoot you,” he told the suspect, according to the report.

Jimenez allegedly responded, “I don’t care, shoot me,” while continuing to demand entry.

Before deputies arrived, the Jimenezes left the property and walked southbound in the neighborhood. Officers located her nearby shortly after and arrested her. 

During questioning, Jimenez reportedly told officers the incident was “all about a man” and claimed she had gone to the home looking for her ex-boyfriend and his current girlfriend. However, the residents told deputies they did not know her.

Jimenez was arrested and charged with attempted burglary of an occupied dwelling. She was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

When most people think about a sheriff’s office, they imagine deputies responding to emergencies, making arrests and investigating crimes. While those responsibilities are critical, a true full-service public safety organization must also address what happens after an arrest. That is where the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Department of Community Programs (DOCP) delivers measurable results.

DOCP provides structured, accountable alternatives to incarceration that combine supervision, treatment and evidence-based intervention. This approach holds individuals responsible while targeting the root causes of repeat offending. Organized into five specialized divisions, Pretrial Services, Misdemeanor Probation, Drug Court Treatment, Juvenile Services and Reentry, DOCP provides a comprehensive continuum of care to reduce the jail population, save millions of tax dollars in incarceration costs and strengthen public safety across Broward County.

BSO’s Pretrial Services and Misdemeanor Probation divisions provide court-ordered supervision for individuals in the community while maintaining accountability and protecting public safety. Established in the early 80s, the Pretrial Services Division is one of the longest-standing programs of its kind in Florida. The division supervises thousands of individuals awaiting trial under court-ordered conditions through reporting requirements, home and office visits, drug testing and, when necessary, electronic monitoring and Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking. By stabilizing employment and preserving family ties, these strategies minimize the impact of criminal justice involvement while directly tackling the root causes of crime. Misdemeanor Probation provides supervision for individuals convicted of misdemeanor offenses through structured reporting and compliance requirements. The division also offers diversion programs for first-time offenders, typically lasting three to six months. Successful completion may result in case dismissal, reinforcing accountability while helping individuals avoid the long-term consequences of a criminal conviction.

BSO’s Drug Court Treatment Division, one of the oldest programs in the nation, addresses one of the primary drivers of criminal behavior: substance use. Participants undergo intensive, court-supervised treatment that includes counseling, frequent drug testing, medication management, psychiatric services and crisis intervention. The program also connects participants with supportive housing, transportation assistance and employment referrals. This comprehensive model reduces recidivism, decreases the risk of relapse and restores stability to individuals and families.

The Community Justice Program provides early intervention for youth, ages seven to 17, through restorative justice and structured diversion. Proactive support for youth offenders significantly lowers the likelihood of future criminal behavior, safeguarding both the individuals involved and the community.

Successful reentry is proven to be one of the most effective crime-reduction strategies available to law enforcement today. For individuals returning to the community post-incarceration, our Reentry Division provides structured supervision, employment assistance, treatment referrals and essential support services to stabilize them during a critical transition period. Through partnerships with community organizations, we host employment and resource fairs, financial literacy workshops and outreach initiatives that address housing instability and workforce barriers.

True public safety is not measured solely by the arrests we make, but by the cycles we break. Through prevention, intervention, structured supervision and successful reentry, our Department of Community Programs is breaking cycles of crime and proactively building a safer, more resilient future for all of Broward County. Ready to learn how government works? The annual Coral Springs Teen Political Forum will take place at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on April 16 at 6:30 PM. This event provides youth throughout District 3 and Broward County with the opportunity to ask tough questions and gain insight into the challenges policymakers face daily. Elected leaders from state, county and cities will all participate. I look forward to seeing these young leaders run for office in the future and appreciate them attending to make their voices heard.

These amazing organizations do vital work, along with many others in our community every day.

April is Earth Month with Earth Day celebrated on April 22.  There will be many events hosted throughout the County, including many at our parks. In District 3, Coral Springs will host Earth Fest at the Sawgrass Nature Center in the Coral Springs Sports Complex on April 25 from 9 AM to 12 PM. It will feature nature exhibits, community garden displays, raffles, and a plant giveaway. Best of all, the event is free! Enjoy this great educational and fun opportunity for the whole family.

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) will open its School Choice Late Application Window for the 2026-27 school year on Wednesday, April 1 at 8 a.m., giving families another opportunity to apply for select programs with available seats.

During the late window, families may submit applications for school reassignments, Nova schools and magnet programs at participating schools.

District officials noted that families who already submitted a School Choice application during the earlier Open Enrollment Window do not need to reapply. Existing applications will remain active throughout the process unless families wish to add another School Choice option.

Applications must be completed through the BCPS Focus Parent Portal. Families can access step-by-step instructions for creating an account, linking students, and obtaining a student ID for those not currently enrolled in BCPS at browardschools.com.

The City of Tamarac will host its annual Autism Awareness Day, a family-friendly event designed to promote inclusion and support for individuals with autism, on Saturday, April 25.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Tamarac Park Baseball Fields, located at 7501 N. University Drive. Admission is free.

Residents of all ages are invited to attend the sensory-friendly event, which will feature a variety of activities and attractions, including a petting zoo, train rides, food trucks, arts and crafts, and access to community resources.

Attendees are encouraged to bring friends and family for a morning of entertainment, education, and community connection.

BSO investigators say an organized crew behind multiple vape shop burglaries across Broward and the tri-county area has been identified, with arrests made following a Tamarac smash-and-grab theft.

According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office report, investigators say the case centers around a March 5 break-in at My Smoke Stash, located at 6418 North University Drive, where suspects allegedly smashed a front window using a rock before entering the business and stealing merchandise.

Deputies were first dispatched to the store around 4:00 a.m. after an alarm was triggered. When they arrived, they found the glass shattered and evidence of forced entry. Investigators later determined that approximately $15,178 worth of electronic vape products, along with a cash register containing about $105, had been taken.

Detectives say the burglary followed a pattern seen in other recent incidents across the area. According to investigators, multiple vape shop burglaries in Tamarac and nearby cities involved suspects dressed in dark clothing, using smash-and-grab tactics, and fleeing in high-end rental vehicles.

Authorities say video captured two suspects leaving their residence through a window in the early morning hours, carrying large red plastic bins. The same bins were later seen being used during the burglary.

License plate reader data and CCTV footage showed a vehicle arriving at the location, where four individuals exited, broke into the store, and loaded merchandise into the bins before fleeing.

Roughly two hours later, the same vehicle was captured on video losing control and crashing into a grassy area less than two miles from the burglary scene. Two suspects exited the car and attempted to move it, but were unsuccessful, then fled on foot.

Investigators say that shortly after the crash, a third individual arrived, entered the vehicle, and drove it away. That person was later identified as Omani N. Prince, 18, of Tamarac, who was stopped by deputies later that morning while driving the same car. 

Detectives later learned the vehicle had been rented through a third-party rental service and was in use at the time of the burglary.

On March 13, two juveniles were taken into custody. During an interview, one of them confessed to his involvement in the burglary and identified Prince as a participant. According to the affidavit, he told investigators that Prince was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash and removed stolen merchandise from the trunk before fleeing the scene.

Authorities allege that Prince played a direct role in the burglary. He is also believed to have been involved in other similar crimes targeting vape shops across the tri-county area.

Prince was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. Both juveniles in custody were transported to the juvenile detention center. One additional suspect remains at-large.

Kings Point Palace presents a tribute to Adele’s music, featuring vocalist Jenna DeVries and a live band performing some of the singer’s most well-known songs.

DeVries, a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who reached the Top 24 on American Idol, is known for her expressive vocal style. Backed by a full band, she performs a range of Adele’s catalog, from upbeat, high-energy songs to more intimate, piano-driven ballads. The setlist includes familiar hits such as “Hello,” “Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You,” and “Set Fire to the Rain.”

Held on Saturday, April 11, at 8 p.m., the show is $20 for Kings Point residents and $25 for guests, with tickets available online and at the venue’s box office before and on the night of the concert.

The new box office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturdays, tickets can be purchased at the Clubhouse from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at the Palace from 7 to 8:15 p.m.

As a reminder, shorts are not permitted in the theater. All attendees must be 18 years or older for all shows. Kings Point Palace is open to the public.

The City of Tamarac will host its inaugural Tamarac Food & Wine Festival on Friday, April 17, featuring live entertainment, food vendors and curated wine experiences.

The event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Tamarac Village Amphitheater, 9090 NW 57th Ave.

International dancehall artist Busy Signal will headline the festival, bringing a high-energy performance to the evening’s lineup. Busy Signal, real name Reanno Devon Gordon, is a dancehall and reggae performer from Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica.

Attendees can expect a variety of food offerings, wine selections and live entertainment in an outdoor festival setting.

General admission is free, but advance registration is required at tamarac.gov/foodandwine to attend. City officials said registration is necessary for crowd control and noted that tickets are nearly sold out.

VIP tickets are available for $85 and include upgraded access and premium experiences.

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Tamarac’s representative in Congress, is facing one of the most serious congressional ethics findings in recent memory after a bipartisan House panel on Friday concluded she committed dozens of violations tied to campaign financing and alleged misuse of public funds.

Cherfilus-McCormick’s case now raises the possibility that Broward residents could see their representative removed from office, depending on what happens next in Washington.

The House Ethics Committee found that Cherfilus-McCormick, 47, violated House rules and federal campaign laws in 25 of 27 allegations reviewed during a lengthy investigation and public hearing. The bipartisan panel, evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, said the violations were supported by “clear and convincing evidence” after examining a yearslong trail of financial transactions. 

At the center of the case is roughly $5 million in COVID-era disaster relief funds that were overpaid to a health care company tied to Cherfilus-McCormick’s family. Investigators concluded that the money was routed through a network of businesses and people and ultimately used to support her 2022 congressional campaign, despite public claims that the campaign was self-funded. 

Federal prosecutors have already charged Cherfilus-McCormick criminally, alleging she diverted millions in public funds, laundered money, and facilitated illegal campaign contributions. She has pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing. 

According to an indictment, Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother Edwin Cherfilus, 51, both of Miramar, worked through their family-run health-care company, Trinity Health Care Services, on a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract in 2021. In July 2021, the company received an overpayment of nearly $5.1 million in FEMA funds, a mistake caused by a clerical error,  prosecutors said. 

The government deposited the money into a company account controlled by the congresswoman and her brother, who allegedly kept the funds, prosecutors said. 

A former CEO of the family company, Cherfilus-McCormick, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022 and won reelection in November 2024. 

The House ethics ruling does not itself remove her from office, but it sets the stage for potential punishment when Congress reconvenes. The full committee is expected to recommend disciplinary action in the coming weeks, with options ranging from censure to expulsion. Expelling a member of Congress requires a two-thirds vote of the House.

Cherfilus-McCormick represents Florida’s 20th Congressional District, which covers parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. If she were removed from office, the seat would likely be filled through a special election, temporarily leaving constituents without representation.

Cherfilus-McCormick’s legal team has criticized the ethics process as unfair, arguing that it could prejudice her upcoming criminal trial. The congresswoman has suggested she is the target of a political witch hunt. 

If convicted, Cherfilus-McCormick faces up to 53 years in prison. Edwin Cherfilus faces up to 35 years, while two other accused parties face up to 10 and 33 years’ imprisonment.

According to a report by The Hill, Cherfilus-McCormick sought a presidential pardon during last year’s White House Christmas party.

Broward County School Board candidate Nicole Morst announced the endorsement of North Lauderdale Mayor Samson Borgelin on Thursday, adding to a growing list of local leaders supporting her campaign in District 4.

“Nicole Morst understands what our students, families, and schools need because she’s been deeply involved at every level,” Borgelin said. “She will be a strong, thoughtful voice for all communities across this district, and I’m proud to support her.”

Morst, a District 4 parent and chair of the North Area Advisory Council, has worked with families and schools throughout Broward County as a longtime public school advocate.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Mayor Borgelin for his support,” Morst said. “This campaign is about making sure every community in District 4 feels heard and represented, and that our schools are safe, strong, and focused on student success.”

Borgelin’s endorsement adds to a list of supporters that includes Broward County School Board Vice Chair Dr. Jeff Holness, Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, Coral Springs Commissioners Joe McHugh and Josh Simmons, and Margate Vice Mayor Anthony Caggiano.

“Nicole Morst understands our schools because she’s done the work,” Holness said. “She has served on school and district advisory councils, worked alongside educators and families, and advocated for meaningful improvements. She brings thoughtful, experienced leadership.”

The campaign recently held a kickoff event that drew a crowd of supporters and elected officials from across the district. Among those in attendance were School Board Members Debbi Hixon and Holness, Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook, Commissioners Shawn Cerra and Simmons, and Margate Commissioner Arlene Schwartz.

Morst said her campaign is focused on school safety, supporting teachers, improving communication with families, and ensuring neighborhood schools across District 4 receive adequate resources.

Also running for the seat currently held by Lori Alhadeff, who is not running again, is Sharry Kimmel.

The election for Broward County School Board District 4 is scheduled for Aug. 18, 2026.

A man was arrested for attempted murder after a dispute at Lauderhill Mall escalated into a shooting in a Sunrise neighborhood.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the incident started Friday at the Lauderhill Mall and escalated into a shooting along the 6400 block of Northwest 20th Court in Sunrise.

Investigators said the victim told officers the incident began when he got into a dispute inside the mall with Joubert Sevil, 34, of Fort Lauderdale. During the argument, Sevil allegedly threatened Eugene’s life as well as his mother’s.

After leaving the mall, the victim said he noticed Sevil following him in another vehicle. When he eventually parked, he saw Sevil park several houses away. 

According to an arrest report, a second vehicle pulled up behind Sevil, and the victim watched as Sevil retrieved what he believed to be a firearm from that car. He told deputies that Sevil then began “speed walking” toward him, prompting him to run away. While fleeing, he heard two gunshots fired in his direction.

Authorities said Sevil was arrested the following day after an investigation that included physical evidence and video footage, which helped establish probable cause.

Sevil was transported to the Broward Main Jail, where he is without bond.

The Bronx Wanderers, a long-running Las Vegas act, are set to perform at Kings Point Palace with a wide-ranging musical set.

The band features father Vinny Adinolfi and his sons, Vincent John and Nick, alongside their longtime friends, Joe Bari and Fernando Tort. The group has held a Las Vegas residency since 2016 and currently headlines at the South Point Hotel & Casino.

Vinny Sr. was a producer at Columbia Records and worked with legends like Neil Diamond, Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand, and Billy Joel. The band’s show combines the hits from the 1950s to the 1980s, featuring many artists Adinolfi worked with, along with storytelling that draws on his career in the record business. The performance moves across decades and genres, mixing crowd favorites with personal anecdotes and onstage humor.

Coming off a strong month in February and an appearance in the Florida Gulf Coast Championship to begin March, the TS Aquatics swim team delivered an outstanding performance at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships on March 14.

“Extremely proud of how this team showed up, competed, and battled through a long four-day championship meet,” Head Coach Andre Bailey said. “The effort, toughness, and team spirit were outstanding from start to finish.”

TS Aquatics finished in the top five overall, highlighted by a fourth-place finish from the boys team, while the girls placed 10th. The team also set four new team records, captured two relay victories in the men’s 200 and 400 freestyle relays, and achieved two future cuts, capping off an impressive showing.
