A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a targeted attack on the San Francisco home of OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman.

Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, a resident of Spring, Texas, was arrested on Friday morning after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence and later threatening to “burn down” the company’s headquarters.

According to the San Francisco District Attorney’s office, the incident began at approximately 4:00 AM on Friday, April 10, 2026. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Moreno-Gama throwing an incendiary device at the exterior gate of Altman’s Russian Hill home. The fire self-extinguished before emergency crews arrived, and no injuries were reported. Altman was at home at the time of the attack but was unharmed.

Campaign of terror

The violence escalated an hour later when Moreno-Gama appeared at OpenAI’s headquarters in Mission Bay. Security personnel reported that the suspect used a chair to strike the building’s glass doors while shouting threats to kill those inside. Police officers, recognising the suspect’s description from the earlier firebombing, detained him on the scene. Authorities recovered a jug of kerosene, a lighter and a document that prosecutors described as an “anti-AI manifesto.”

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins confirmed on Monday that Moreno-Gama faces multiple state felonies, including two counts of attempted murder – targeting both Altman and a security guard – as well as arson and possession of a destructive device. Federal prosecutors have also brought charges for the destruction of property using explosives, with U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian stating the case will be treated as an act of “domestic terrorism.”

The attack has sent shockwaves through Silicon Valley, occurring amid a period of intense public debate over the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. In a blog post addressing the incident, Altman shared a rare personal photo of his family, hoping to “dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house.” He added that while anxiety regarding technology is “justified,” it is essential to “de-escalate the rhetoric.”

Rockstar Games, the developer behind the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto franchise, has been targeted by hackers for the second time in three years.

The breach was claimed by the prolific cybercriminal group ShinyHunters, which has threatened to leak stolen data unless a ransom is paid. Despite the threat, Rockstar has moved quickly to downplay the incident, insisting that the compromised information is “non-material” and poses no risk to the company or its millions of players.

The breach reportedly occurred through a third-party cloud provider rather than Rockstar’s internal infrastructure. In posts shared on Saturday, ShinyHunters claimed they had gained access to sensitive servers and would begin publishing the stolen material if their demands were ignored.

In a statement to gaming publication Kotaku, a Rockstar spokesperson confirmed the hack but stated: “We can confirm that a limited amount of company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This has no impact on our organisation or our players.”

Prolific teenage hackers

The group responsible, ShinyHunters, is a well-known collective of English-speaking cybercriminals, largely believed to be in their teens. They specialize in high-profile data theft and extortion, recently making headlines for a massive breach targeting the ticketing giant Ticketmaster.

While the group has not disclosed the technical methods used to infiltrate Rockstar’s cloud partner, they confirmed to the BBC that they intend to follow through with the leak, as the developer has refused to engage in ransom negotiations.

Global law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, consistently advise against paying ransoms. They argue that payment only fuels the criminal industry and offers no guarantee that the stolen data will be deleted.

This incident is an echo of the 2023 hack that nearly derailed the marketing campaign for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. In that instance, 18-year-old Arion Kurtaj, a member of the Lapsus$ gang, leaked 90 clips of unfinished gameplay, forcing Rockstar to release the game’s official trailer ahead of schedule.

While the 2023 breach involved core source code and sensitive developmental footage, Rockstar’s current stance suggests security has held up better against this latest attempt. Rolls-Royce SMR has secured nearly £600 million in backing from the National Wealth Fund for the design and delivery of the UK’s first Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

The agreement, signed with Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N), marks the start of a multi-billion-pound program aimed at bolstering national energy security and providing the high-capacity, “always-on” power required to fuel the government’s ambitious artificial intelligence and computing vision.

Unlike traditional, massive nuclear power stations, SMRs utilise standardised, factory-built components that can be transported to site, significantly reducing construction timelines and costs. This modular approach is seen as essential for the UK’s proposed AI Growth Zones (AIGZs).

These zones require massive, stable energy injections to power the next generation of data centres, which are currently straining the National Grid. By deploying SMRs, the government hopes to create a “sovereign energy shield” that can power intensive AI model training and high-performance computing without being subject to the volatility of fossil fuel markets.

The initial three-unit project is expected to generate 1.4GWe of electricity, enough to power three million homes while supporting 3,000 jobs during peak construction. Chris Cholerton, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce SMR, stated that the contract “brings certainty” to the program and allows the company to transform how nuclear projects are delivered.

“We are giving greater cost and schedule certainty with a standardized, factory-built approach,” Cholerton noted, adding that the project will “power up our business and the UK supply chain.”

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described the milestone as a vital step toward ending dependence on unpredictable global energy markets. “Our clean energy mission is the only route to getting off the rollercoaster of fossil fuels and taking back control of our energy independence,” Miliband said.

However, according to the latest research from Omdia, this modest success may be the calm before a significant storm as supply chain bottlenecks and skyrocketing component costs begin to bite.

While shipments remained resilient, Omdia analysts suggest the figures were temporarily buoyed by “frontloading,” where vendors stocked up on inventory to get ahead of rising costs.

The financial pressure on manufacturers is becoming extreme. Prices for mobile DRAM and NAND flash memory surged by 90% in Q1 and are projected to climb another 30% in Q2.

Samsung reclaims top spot

Samsung has returned to the number one position globally, driven by the strong performance of its Galaxy S26 series. Pre-orders for the new flagship are up 10% compared to last year’s S25, helping the company offset delays in its mid-range refresh cycle. Apple also maintained a strong second-place position, with steady demand for the iPhone 17 series despite regional supply disruptions.

Outside the top two, the market is becoming increasingly polarised. Brands like Huawei and HONOR saw share gains through aggressive domestic performance and overseas expansion. Conversely, budget-focused vendors like Xiaomi and TRANSSION are facing tighter margins, as they have less “pricing power” to pass cost increases on to consumers.

The relief brought by Q1’s growth is expected to be short-lived. Omdia predicts a “demand shock” as manufacturers are forced to hike retail prices to protect their margins. “The worst is still ahead,” warned Runar Bjorhovde, Principal Analyst at Omdia. With escalating logistics friction and macro volatility, Omdia has adjusted its full-year forecast downward, predicting that global shipments could decline by as much as 15% across 2026. For the industry, the remainder of the year will be a disciplined fight for survival, focused on “margin protection” rather than raw volume.

Tesla is developing a new, smaller, and significantly cheaper electric vehicle to sit below the Model 3 in its current line-up, according to a report from Reuters.

The long-rumoured “entry-level” Tesla, often referred to informally as the Model 2, is expected to start at approximately $25,000 (£20,000), marking Elon Musk’s most aggressive attempt to move the brand into the mass-market segment.

The move comes as Tesla faces intensifying pressure from Chinese manufacturers, such as BYD, which have flooded international markets with affordable electric hatchbacks. By lowering the cost of entry, Tesla aims to revitalize sales volumes that have slowed as the premium EV market reaches saturation.

Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that the new vehicle is being developed under the internal codename “Redwood” and will utilize a revolutionary “unboxed” manufacturing process designed to slash production costs by 50%.

Challenge to European and Chinese rivals

The launch of a $25,000 Tesla creates a direct threat to the newly unveiled Cupra Raval and the Renault 5, both of which are targeting the £23,000 price bracket. While Tesla has dominated the luxury and mid-range EV sectors, it has historically struggled to produce a profitable vehicle at a sub-$30,000 price point. The US Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, summoned major American bank chiefs to a meeting in Washington this week amid concerns over the cyber risks posed by Anthropic’s latest AI model, according to reports. Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, was said to have been among those gathered at the Treasury headquarters for the meeting after the release of the Claude Mythos AI model that Anthropic says poses unprecedented cybersecurity risks. The foldable iPhone — which is now rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra — is sure to be Apple’s most expensive phone yet, and a new pricing rumor gives us a clearer idea of just how expensive. Tesla is developing an all-new smaller, cheaper electric SUV, four people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The automaker has contacted suppliers in recent weeks to discuss details of the plan for the compact SUV – which would be a new vehicle and not a variant of Tesla’s current Model 3 or ​Y, the people said. The conversations involved the manufacturing process and specifications for various components, they said. The car would be 4.28 meters in length, or about 14 feet, two of the sources said. OpenAI has put on hold plans for a landmark UK investment citing high energy costs and regulation, in a blow to the government which has put AI at the centre of its growth strategy. White House staff were warned last month not to use insider information to place bets on predictions markets. The email was sent to staff on 24 March, a day after US President Donald Trump announced a five-day pause on his threat to attack Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure. For years now, hallucinations have been the big concern with AI models. Their capacity for simply making things up means that you can never 100% rely on them for an answer without checking it. Now, new research from Anthropic suggests that we’ve reached the point where we’re going to have to learn to also deal with AI’s ability to conceal what it has done as well.
