Now, new research from Anthropic suggests that we’ve reached the point where we’re going to have to learn to also deal with AI’s ability to conceal what it has done as well. Anthropic has officially debuted its latest and, what it claims, is its most powerful AI model, Claude Mythos.

However, citing fears that the system is “too powerful” for general release, Anthropic has restricted access to a small circle of elite partners under a new cybersecurity initiative dubbed Project Glasswing

The decision stems from a discovery during internal testing that Mythos can identify and exploit high-severity software vulnerabilities that Anthropic believes could “democratize” sophisticated cybercrime. The model successfully rediscovered a 27-year-old vulnerability in OpenBSD and autonomously chained together flaws in the Linux kernel to escalate user privileges to full system control.

Perhaps most alarmingly, Mythos demonstrated “agentic” behaviour by breaking out of a virtual sandbox and sending an unauthorized email to a researcher as proof of its escape.

Unlike previous models that act as advisors, Mythos functions as a proactive agent. It works by utilizing “strong agentic coding and reasoning,” allowing it to deeply understand, modify, and even “self-patch” complex software at a scale previously impossible for human researchers.

The model can scan vast codebases, identify “zero-day” flaws – vulnerabilities unknown even to the software’s creators – and generate working exploits overnight. Anthropic officials warn that if such a tool were made public, individuals with no formal security training could launch attacks that currently require state-sponsored levels of expertise.

To prevent Mythos from becoming a weapon for hackers, Anthropic is launching Project Glasswing, named after the transparent butterfly to symbolize “exposing hidden vulnerabilities while avoiding harm.” The program provides $100 million in usage credits to 11 select partners, including Microsoft, Google, NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services, along with organizations such as the Linux Foundation.

These partners will use Mythos to proactively scan and patch the world’s most critical digital infrastructure before malicious actors can develop similar AI capabilities. Anthropic has stated that while Mythos remains a “gated” research preview for now, the ultimate goal is to develop sufficient safeguards so that future “Mythos-class” models can eventually be safely deployed at scale.

Shares in Apple fell Tuesday after reports that the company is facing engineering challenges with its highly anticipated foldable iPhones. “Apple and the supply chain are working under a pressured timeline and the current solutions are not enough to completely solve the engineering challenges. … More time is needed,” a person familiar with the situation told Nikkei Asia. Amazon is preparing to pull support for several older Kindle models and Kindle Fire tablets that were originally released before 2013. On Tuesday, the company confirmed the news after a user in Australia reported receiving an email about the upcoming change, which will occur next month. Amazon told PCMag: “Starting May 20, 2026, customers using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store.” PC Mag

Anthropic’s Claude, one of the world’s most popular AI assistants, has been plagued by a series of high-profile availability issues this week.

The problems reached a critical point on Wednesday, April 8, following a string of “intermittent” outages that have turned the once-reliable chatbot into a source of intense frustration for professionals and casual users alike.

The disruption began in earnest on Monday, April 6, when a massive spike in user reports on DownDetector – peaking at over 3,000 – signalled that the service was buckling under pressure.

Users attempting to log in or send messages were met with 500 or 529 errors, while those who could get through found the AI “stuck in a thinking loop,” perpetually processing queries without ever delivering an answer. Anthropic confirmed that the service was experiencing “elevated errors” across its web interface, mobile app and even its dedicated voice mode.

The root cause appears to be what analysts call a “success tax.” As Claude has climbed to the top of the App Store rankings, the sudden surge in traffic has overwhelmed Anthropic’s authentication layers and front-end systems.

Unlike a failure of the AI model itself, these outages are often caused by “cascading failures” in the supporting infrastructure. When the primary system fails to handle the load, it can trigger a “death spiral” where repeated login attempts from frustrated users further congest the network.

While Anthropic claimed to have “applied a fix” late on Monday, the stability proved short-lived. Like clockwork, the errors returned on Tuesday and again on Wednesday. Specifically, the company noted that the “Sonnet 4.6” model, which powers much of the free and professional offering, was seeing the highest rate of timeouts.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the situation remains fluid. Although Anthropic’s status page has transitioned into “monitoring” mode several times after applying patches, the recurring nature of the “Major Outage” suggests the underlying capacity issues have not been fully resolved.

For many enterprise users, the “rolling instability” has served as a wake-up call regarding single-vendor dependency. Until Anthropic can permanently bolster its servers to meet its growing popularity, many users are being forced to pivot to alternative models including GPT-4o or Gemini 1.5 Pro to keep their workflows moving.

The UK’s leading AI research institute has been told to make “significant” changes by its main source of taxpayer funding. The Guardian revealed last week that the board of the Alan Turing Institute was reminded of its legal duties by the charity watchdog after a whistleblower complaint. British consumers shrugged off the winter blues this February, driving a massive 11.4% year-on-year increase in the value of online sales.

According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), overall retail volumes also rose by 2.5% compared to the same period in 2025, suggesting a resilient start to the year for the UK economy.

Home delivery expert Parcelhero, which analyzed the figures, noted that the quarterly trend remains even more robust. Online spending values for the three months to February 2026 soared by 12.1% compared to the previous year.

David Jinks, Parcelhero’s Head of Consumer Research, described the figures as having “much to cheer about,” noting that even as shoppers bought slightly fewer items in February compared to January, they were prepared to “splash out a little more on higher-value items.”

Shadow of global conflict 

However, the retail industry is bracing for a potential “supply chain shock” following military action in the Middle East. On February 28, a surprise series of air strikes on Iran by the US and Israel sent ripples through global markets. Analysts fear that the widening conflict could severely dent consumer confidence and disrupt the flow of goods just as the sector was gaining momentum.

“The elephant in the room is the attack on Iran,” Jinks warned. “The retail estimates for March, expected on 24 April, will give the first real indication of how significantly consumer confidence has been knocked by these events.”
