The UK new car market has recorded its strongest August performance since the introduction of the biannual plate change, extending a steady run of growth to nine consecutive months.

Figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that overall registrations rose by 13.7% to reach 94,236 units during what is traditionally one of the quietest months of the year, as buyers often defer purchases ahead of September’s new vehicle registrations.

Growth was observed across all sectors. Private demand surged by 19.0% to account for 40.8% of the market, while fleet registrations climbed 10.1%, making up 57.2% of total sales. The smaller business sector also posted a 14.5% increase.

While petrol registrations saw a dip, electrified powertrains drove the market forward at a rapid pace. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles surged by 39.8%, and hybrid electric vehicles rose by 26.3%.

Crucially, battery electric vehicles provided a major boost to the market. BEV registrations grew by 27.7%, capturing a 29.8% market share – marking a significant seasonal spike aided by lower overall summer volumes.

Manufacturers continue expanding their zero-emission line-ups, supported by heavy discounting and expanding public charging infrastructure. However, despite reaching a record 25.6% uptake across the first eight months of the year, EV sales remain below the government’s 33% headline mandate target, prompting calls for realistic regulatory alignment.

Says Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive:

“August was a bright spot for the new car market and another strong month for electric car uptake, showing that motorists are responding to the huge choice and compelling offers available.

“But August is a low-volume month so September will be the acid test. The industry is doing everything it can to help drivers switch, but mandate targets must be grounded in the reality of demand.

“The Government’s review is the right move so we can ensure the transition is kept on track, consumer choice protected and the jobs and investment necessary to deliver net zero and economic growth are safeguarded.”

In the digital age, protecting your financial information online is paramount. As we engage in various online activities—from shopping to banking—safeguarding sensitive data has become a top priority. With cybercriminals constantly developing new techniques to steal personal and financial details, it’s crucial to stay informed about the best practices for maintaining privacy and security when managing money online.

Shopping, Depositing, and Withdrawing Money Safely Online

When it comes to online transactions, whether shopping, depositing, or withdrawing funds, it’s important to choose platforms that prioritize security. Shopping on reputable websites is a good starting point, but if you’re engaging in financial transactions, such as depositing or withdrawing money from an online account or casino, always opt for services with robust security measures.

Sites like online casinos with fast withdrawals are a safer choice for those who want quick and secure transactions. These casinos typically use advanced encryption technology to protect users’ financial information and ensure personal data remains confidential. Always read reviews and look for casinos or online platforms with a solid reputation for fast, secure transactions.

If you’re transferring funds between accounts, ensure that the website and payment method offer security features like SSL encryption and two-factor authentication.

Use Strong, Unique Passwords

One of the easiest ways to safeguard your financial information online is by using strong, unique passwords. A weak password is an open invitation for hackers to gain access to your accounts. Instead of using simple combinations like “123456” or “password,” create passwords that are at least 12 characters long and feature a range of numbers and letters – both upper and lower case.

Additionally, avoid reusing passwords across different platforms. If you’re managing multiple accounts, consider using a password manager to store and generate complex passwords, ensuring each account is protected by a unique credential.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a layer of security to your accounts. This feature requires you to verify your identity using a second method beyond just your password—usually, a one-time code sent via SMS or generated by an authenticator app.

By enabling 2FA, even if a hacker manages to steal your password, they would still need access to your secondary authentication method, making it much harder for them to access your financial information. Many online banking services and shopping websites now offer this feature, and it’s highly recommended for anyone who wants to enhance their security.

Shop and Transact Only on Secure Websites

When shopping online or engaging in any transaction, always ensure the website you’re using is secure. A secure site starts with “https://” rather than “http://” in the URL. The “s” stands for secure, meaning the site uses encryption to protect your data.

Additionally, look for a padlock symbol next to the URL, which indicates that the website uses SSL encryption, ensuring any financial details you input are protected. Avoid making purchases on unfamiliar websites or those with spelling errors in their URLs, as these could be fraudulent sites designed to steal your financial information.

Be Wary of Phishing Scams

Phishing scams are a prevalent method used by cybercriminals to trick individuals into revealing personal and financial information. These phishing scams usually come in the form of emails, text messages, or phone calls.

It’s essential to be cautious and verify the authenticity of any communication that requests sensitive information. Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources, and always go directly to the company’s website if you suspect something might be a scam.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Financial Transactions

Public Wi-Fi networks, while convenient, can be a breeding ground for cybercriminals looking to intercept personal information. When using public Wi-Fi, such as in coffee shops or airports, avoid accessing sensitive information like your bank account or making purchases online. Hackers can easily set up rogue Wi-Fi hotspots, allowing them to monitor your online activity and steal personal data. If you need to access sensitive information, consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which encrypts your internet connection and makes it more secure, even on public Wi-Fi.

Use Virtual Credit Cards

Virtual credit cards are temporary, disposable cards that can be used for online purchases. These cards provide an added layer of security by generating unique card numbers for each transaction, which can only be used for a specific purchase. Even if a hacker intercepts the virtual card information, they won’t be able to use it for any other transactions. Many financial institutions and credit card companies now offer virtual cards, and they can be especially helpful for those who shop frequently online.

Conclusion

As online shopping and digital payments continue to grow, taking proactive steps to safeguard your financial information becomes increasingly important. By following these guidelines and adopting best practices for online security, you can confidently engage in online transactions without compromising your privacy or safety.

Londoners can now hail the UK’s first self-driving minicabs as Uber launches an autonomous fleet in partnership with British AI firm Wayve.

The initial rollout consists of 15 vehicles operating on standard fares through the Uber app, though a non-speaking human safety driver remains legally required behind the wheel to take control if anything goes wrong.

Introducing autonomous vehicles to London has taken years because of strict regulatory oversight, with the Department for Transport and Transport for London prioritising rigorous safety testing over a hasty rollout. Navigating London’s complex layout, narrow streets, and heavy traffic presents challenges unseen in relatively easy-to-navigate, grid-patterned American cities.

Safety concerns were highlighted during a recent test ride by BBC technology editor Zoe Kleinman, where the safety driver was forced to physically intervene when the doors of a parked van suddenly swung open on a narrow road.

Beyond technology and road safety, the transition has triggered major labour concerns. The GMB Union has warned that the expansion of robotaxis threatens hundreds of thousands of driving jobs and could cause widespread economic distress.

Said David McMullen, GMB Senior Organiser:

“With hundreds of thousands of people employed to drive every day, we need to be really careful with the roll-out of driverless cars unless we are prepared to see unprecedented levels of social and economic disruption.”

McMullen added that the union has called on TfL and the government to urgently develop a plan to protect drivers and hold operators accountable. “Until a plan is put in place to manage this transition and support drivers, it is premature to move to ‘driverless’ services,” he said, emphasising that it is vital to consider workforce implications before full automation expands further.

EDITOR’S VIEW

I love tech, and I love writing about shiny new gadgets, but on the subject of autonomous, or Robo, taxis, I find myself very much on the side of the human taxi driver. Why? Because I can’t see a compelling reason for replacing them. At least not yet.

Not because I love the banter of human drivers (I really don’t), but I can’t really see who benefits from the tech except the billionaire operators of companies like Uber – at least not yet.

Robotaxis won’t be any cheaper, won’t be any safer (even on the first test drives of journalists, a human was needed to intervene) and, most studies show, they’re not popular with the general public.

A further problem, of course, is that replacing human drivers with our robot overlords isn’t going to cause mass unemployment – at least in the short term. It will also lead to some very difficult and complex legal cases if and when a pedestrian is killed, especially if the robotaxi is hacked by a belligerent foreign power, as seems entirely possible.

It all reminds me of a couple of years ago when the guy near us who painted the lines for the local football pitches was replaced by a robot line marker. A team of tecchies swarmed onto the playing fields to set up the robot, which had to be used in conjunction with a camera mounted quite high up to give instructions to the robot about where to paint the lines.

Of course, it cost an absolute fortune and kept breaking down as the camera and line marker failed to communicate properly with one another. After great expense of getting the tecchies back in to fix things, it was of course decided to give the old guy who painted the lines his job back. And since then, nothing more has been seen of the robot line marker – much to the displeasure of the local dogs who used to love chasing it across the field once a week!

Shares in Nvidia were slightly lower after the $12.93bn (£9.57bn) deal – which ranks among its biggest ever – was announced for the database of AI models on Thursday. The New York-based startup Hugging Face, which is backed by Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and Amazon, was founded in 2016 by the French entrepreneurs Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf. The Guardian

Uber said it surveyed London-based customers via the app and more than 100,000 said they would choose a self-driving taxi if one was available, despite incidents of driverless rides malfunctioning in US cities where they already operate. Following its massive corporate merger, VodafoneThree has launched two major new products: Vodafone SuperMobile and Vodafone TV.

The dual rollout is designed to bring faster mobile connections and a complete home entertainment system into a single package, backed by the company’s upgraded 5G network.

Vodafone SuperMobile is an optional mobile plan upgrade designed to give customers a faster and more reliable phone connection in busy places. Available from an extra £3 a month, Vodafone promises several key benefits for users.

It claims it will deliver speeds up to four times faster than standard plans in crowded areas. It also introduces a world-first guarantee: if your download speeds drop below 15 megabits per second while on its 5G network, you are legally allowed to leave your contract without paying a penalty. Finally, it includes built-in digital security tools to protect against malware, viruses and scam calls at no extra cost.

Alongside mobile upgrades, Vodafone TV marks the company’s entry into the home television market. The service uses a small plug-in box that connects to your Wi-Fi, bringing live TV, streaming apps and gaming together without needing a satellite dish or TV aerial.

It comes bundled with subscriptions to Netflix and HBO Max, access to over 150 live channels via Freely, and thousands of additional apps through the Google Play Store in 4K quality. A handy smartphone app also lets users start a show at home and keep watching on the move.

With these new packages rolling out to customers, VodafoneThree is positioning itself as an all-in-one provider looking to challenge rival networks with bundled entertainment and performance guarantees.

Industry experts have shared mixed views on whether the extra costs will appeal to everyday shoppers. Says Ernest Doku, Uswitch mobiles expert:

“Vodafone’s double launch is a bid to be your ‘everything’ provider – one company for your mobile, broadband, telly and streaming, all on a single bill.

“SuperMobile is selling certainty as much as speed, recognising that to customers they’re one and the same. You pay extra for speeds up to four times faster in busy areas, plus a guaranteed minimum of 15Mbps wherever there’s 5G+ coverage – and if that floor isn’t delivered, you can leave without penalty.

“Whether that’s worth paying for depends on how often congestion actually bites, but a guarantee with a penalty-free exit is Vodafone backing itself on the robustness of its new network.

“SuperMobile will make most sense for commuters and anyone regularly streaming or hotspotting in busy places – many others will rarely notice a problem worth paying to fix. At £3 a month extra within a plan, or £12 as a rolling add-on, the cost varies significantly depending on your existing deal, so weigh it against your everyday experience, not the worst-case scenario.

“It’s not the only option either. EE offers a similar congestion-busting service in Fast Lane, though that’s tied to its most expensive plan, while Vodafone’s is available across its pay monthly plans.”

According to BBC Cyber Correspondent Joe Tidy, hackers have published the personal data of nearly nine million people online after a major cyber breach affecting three major UK transport hubs.

The leak follows a targeted extortion attempt against Manchester Airports Group (MAG) – which operates Manchester, London Stansted, and East Midlands airports – after the company refused to pay an undisclosed ransom demanded by the cyber-crime group.

The compromised database, spanning roughly half a terabyte of personally identifiable information, includes customer email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses, vehicle registration numbers, and detailed travel and browsing device history stemming from car park, lounge, Fast Track, and in-airport Wi-Fi bookings.

Unusually, the hackers published the entire dataset for free on the regular internet rather than a dark-web leak site, significantly increasing accessibility and risks for victims.

Cybersecurity experts have warned affected individuals to be on high alert for secondary phishing campaigns, scams, and targeted attacks. Because the exposed material includes historical logs and planned future travel details, passengers, particularly high-profile or wealthy individuals, are being urged to take extra precautions regarding their physical movements.

Data leak analysis from Have I Been Pwned confirmed the nature of the exposed files. While MAG has maintained that the affected internal systems did not store bank or payment details, and that passenger safety and airport operations remain entirely unaffected, law enforcement agencies and regulators continue to advise victims to monitor credit reports closely and watch out for unsolicited communications.

BBC

Young British adults are falling victim to online scams at three times the rate of over-65s, upending common assumptions about who is the most vulnerable in the digital age.

According to a major study of 15,000 European adults by SquareTrade Europe, 61% of 25-to-34-year-olds and 59% of 18-to-24-year-olds report being personally targeted by a scam, compared to just 20% of seniors. Despite this, over a quarter of under-25s still believe their grandparents are the ones most at risk online.

The primary driver behind this vulnerability is how younger demographics interact with technology. Living their lives through smartphones makes them prime targets for criminals operating on social media and messaging apps, which account for 41% of scam encounters among under-25s – with Instagram and TikTok alone responsible for nearly a quarter.

Furthermore, 32% of victims whose accounts were breached reported that the attack originated from a stolen physical smartphone.

As young adults build wealth, they are increasingly targeted by sophisticated financial traps. One in five 25-to-34-year-old victims fell for fake investment scams involving fraudulent crypto schemes and trading platforms, costing an average of £414 per incident.

Coupled with rising artificial intelligence threats – nearly half of UK consumers worry AI is making fraud harder to detect – criminals are deploying flawless phishing, deepfakes, and voice clones.

The emotional fallout is particularly severe among younger generations. Nearly half of scammed 25-to-34-year-olds blame themselves rather than the criminal, breeding intense shame that often stops them from seeking help. Shockingly, 10% of scammed under-25s confided only in AI chatbots like ChatGPT about the experience.

The study also highlighted growing risks of “money muling,” with 42% of 18-to-24-year-olds approached to let strangers use their bank accounts to move funds, and over 5% admitting they went through with it. Experts emphasise that as digital life expands, younger consumers urgently need robust online protection tools to bridge the widening security gap.

Range Rover has officially unveiled its first fully electric model, marking what executives are calling the beginning of a brand-new era for the iconic luxury marque.

The Range Rover Electric represents a major milestone in parent company JLR’s electrification strategy. Set to be built at JLR’s historic manufacturing plant in Solihull, the luxury SUV is estimated to cost between £130,000 and £150,000, with initial UK market pricing kicking off at £154,070.

According to Martin Limpert, managing director of Range Rover, the vehicle establishes “a new benchmark for the original luxury SUV” while retaining the signature design, refinement, and capabilities expected from the brand.

Underneath its familiar luxury exterior, the electric model is powered by a 118.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack and dual permanent-magnet motors delivering roughly 542 horsepower and 850Nm of torque.

The configuration allows the heavy-duty SUV to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds while offering a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 372 miles.

To counter concerns over off-road performance and heavy vehicle weight, engineers integrated advanced traction management systems capable of reacting up to 100 times faster than internal combustion equivalents, allowing it to maintain its trademark ability to wade through up to 900mm of water.

The launch arrives following a turbulent period for the Coventry-based carmaker, which faced a year-long delay to the project alongside supply chain disruptions, restructuring and falling profits following a major cyber attack and a key supplier fire.

Despite these financial headwinds, JLR has pushed ahead with massive investments in modernisation. The company has up-skilled approximately 9,000 manufacturing employees at Solihull and trained an additional 1,500 workers across the West Midlands.

Meanwhile, JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton has been adapted to produce the vehicle’s battery packs and electric drive units alongside traditional engines.

Order books for the Range Rover Electric are now officially open, with first customer deliveries slated to begin next year.
