Ideally, it will improve your image and establish credibility. And most importantly, it will function as a tool for your employees to perform better.

Train Employees

There will be new functions that are practical and relevant to productivity. Employees using the system should be trained on all levels of use and features to get the most out of your purchase. In the end this will bring greater satisfaction and improve workplace morale.

Network Performance

Having the right amount of bandwidth greatly affects how AV technology performs. Bandwidth can be particularly problematic, especially for video distribution. Feedback and support from your IT department is crucial. They will ensure that your network can support your normal traffic and all added AV components. This improves the performance of the system itself and employees using it.

Evaluate Your Purchase

Your goal is to find technology that improves your business. After purchase, regularly evaluate whether it is working and what benefits you have received. So seeing digital display system fails like these really make our stomachs churn.

We’ve compiled a slideshow of some of the most atrocious digital signage fails spotted in the field by sharp-eyed industry folks who were too mortified to look away, then paired them with much better examples.

It isn’t clear in some of these pictures if the tech was installed by an actual systems integrator or a business owner who wanted to save some cash. Either way, it is clear the organization hosting these horrid examples had a bad time.

Useful Digital Display Systems Information for Decision-Makers

The digital signage market size is predicted to grow from where it was in 2017, at $21 billion USD, to $32 billion USD in 2023 (an estimated CAGR of just under 8 percent) — so maybe that’s why there’s bound to be a few rotten eggs in the bunch.

Whether you want to catch visitors’ eyes when they walk into your new headquarters building or you need something super-sized for an entertainment venue – video walls may be just what you are looking for. By definition, a video wall is a display that is created out of an array of multiple individual display elements.

The challenge, though, is determining exactly which solution fits your needs best:

The Tech Decision

Casino Arizona took an existing bar/restaurant that wasn’t driving business the way they wanted and redesigned it to become CAZ Sports Bar, a destination for sports enthusiasts to catch a game.

Casino Arizona is a long-term client of CCS Presentation Systems. When they decided to update their existing restaurant, they immediately contacted CCS to work with them on the design of the new CAZ Sports Bar.

Additional Casino Arizona projects include: the 1,000 seat Bingo Hall, featuring a Magenta Mondo switch and (16) 2 x 2 video walls; the complete design and installation of the 15-story Talking Stick Resort including all audio systems, visual displays and digital signage throughout the state-of-the-art casino and fully equipped conference center.

More than 1,000 speakers and 100 displays are installed, highlighted by a continuous video wall of fifteen 103-inch plasma displays on a custom designed lift system.

The CCS Presentation Systems Solution

Casino Arizona’s AV Integrator, CCS Presentation Systems, used SVSI for the backbone, matching the system they installed at Casino Arizona’s larger property, Talking Stick Resort.

The system sits on the CAZ production network, requiring a great deal of interface with the CAZ IT staff to set up their network to accommodate the 40GB of bandwidth required.

CCS was able to take a loop out of the SVSI encoders and take that into the Magenta system for the remainder of the property. This entire update was done without taking down the existing video system in this 24/7 facility.

The distributed audio is done using a QSC system. This is part of the entire property’s QSYS backbone and can take any source from the main system into the bar or stream any source from the bar to other venues, as needed.

The existing video distribution system throughout all venues is an old analog Magenta system.

The CAZ Sports Bar project allowed an upgrade of the backbone to a digital IPTV system, while keeping the Magenta system online for the remainder of the property.

This new SVSI system supports 4K from over 35 sources – DirecTV tuners, multiple digital signage and gaming feeds.

The display system included two 6×2 and two 8×2 NEC UN551S Video Walls. These are split into 2x2s for signal. It has ten 55-inch NEC monitors above the main bar and another 4 at the back bar.

There are two Sunbrite outdoor TVs on the patio. A feature of the bar is two13K Lumen 4K Barco projectors, edge blended together with a Corio processor to allow for windowing of multiple TV feeds.

Above the main bar is a Rise ticker that scrolls live sports updates including news and scores from an RSS feed.

Audio is a distributed system in the main bar, with a surround system around the Barco projectors for an immersive experience. All equipment is QSC and Sonance.

The video wall displays were installed on a concave wall. The shallow strut had to curve with the wall and the displays had to be installed to maintain an acceptable image on each 2×2 video wall.

The video walls were mounted on an existing rock wall 1-1/2” thick, decorative wall covering ¼” thick with a ½” airgap and ½” drywall.

A Corio video processor was used to manage the video feeds on the dual projector wall. Corio and Barco worked in conjunction to have both products commissioned simultaneously. Because of the size of the projection screen, Barco’s edge blending was very time consuming and precise.

The custom Draper screen was quite large, weighing approximately 600lbs and measuring 24’ wide. There was no entry way to allow the crate to be dollied into the grill area.

The screen had to be un-crated, handles were mounted on 5 points of the screen case, 10 people had to carry the screen and lift it over a glass wall into the grill area.

Because of the weight, the screen could not be lifted into the niche.

Electric winches were mounted above the niche and the screen was flown into the niche.

Permanent structural support was put in place and the winches were sacrificed in the ceiling. The screen niche left 1/16” of clearance on either side of the screen case.

The Impact

CAZ has had the pleasure of working with CCS Presentation Systems for the last ten years on everything from small boardroom projects all the way up to enterprise level IP based audio and video systems for our resort and casinos.

A.C. ProMedia ProLights

A new sister division of A.C. Lighting, distributor A.C. ProMedia used InfoComm 2019 to showcase its varied “Architainment Media Solutions” brands that offer audio, video, lighting, control and networking products, including ProLights, Chroma-Q, Luminex, Prolyte Group, LumenRadio and Harvey. The ProLights offerings highlighted its LED lighting and video effects, ideal for live events, house of worship, rental and staging verticals. ProLights’ Mosaico, new to the U.S. market, is an LED projection lamp. “It offers an amazing beam,” says VP of sales Mic Cardone. “It’s 7,300 Kelvin and over 11,000 lumens, which features Gobo [design wheel] and color mixing, and the price is unbelievable … that’s the kind of lighting we’re trying to promote through A.C. ProMedia.”

Absenicon LED Displays

Absenicon is a new Led display series for meeting room spaces. It comes out of the box, with no processor necessary. It has multiple HDMI inputs, and a one-button click-to-connect for wireless presentation, which supports up to four different signal sources on one screen. Absenicon comes in 110-inch, 120-inch, 160-inch, or 220-inch. Absen is also offering financing to end users for more affordability.

AOTO Mini LED Video Wall

Those who visited AOTO during InfoComm 2019 likely found it difficult to look away from the pixel pitch 0.78mm Mini LED video wall that covered nearly the entire rear wall of the company’s exhibit. During a video interview with Commercial Integrator, AOTO’s Y.T. Chen walked through the products on display at InfoComm 2019 with a focus on the 0.78mm Mini LED product that the company says makes it the “mini LED leader worldwide.” AOTO fine pitch Mini LED products, ranging from 0.78mm to 1.5mm, adopt exclusive 4 in 1 packaging design, which has smaller chip, more stable screen robustness and extremely vivid image with its 4K and 8K technology, according to the company. It adds that the product solves the vulnerability problem of normal fine pitch products and on-site maintenance difficulty of COB products.

Apollo Enclosures AUO Ultra Bright Display Package

Apollo Enclosures is known for being able to provide outdoor housing to easily maintain, ventilate, service, etc. an array of displays and sizes. At InfoComm, the company was showing a bundle that included 2,500 nits high-brightness, 55- and 65-inch backlit LED LCD displays from AUO (PRO-X55A and PRO-X65A). As Apollo president Lynn Stearn notes, though, the package is upgradeable if clients are looking for a different display brand, perhaps 4K, smart TV or other option; the point is the package lowers the price of entry into outdoor displays for customers. “AUO is actually a $45 billion company; people don’t know them because they don’t have their own product [they OEM for other companies], but they came to us and they said they would build us a 2,500-nit panel and we could package it. It’s still two separate pieces and we can build our enclosure around their product and keep it thinner,” Stearn explains, adding that the combined solution for the 55-inch model runs about $2,000 less than comparable-size displays.

Christie MicroTiles LED

Christie unveiled its MicroTiles LED seamless pixel line at ISE 2019, touting them as smaller, brighter and easier to install, opening up even more possibilities for video wall installation. The narrow-pixel pitch LED solution marks the culmination of a two-year project. Christie MicroTiles LED solves integrators’ and customers’ video wall challenges with a three-pillar strategy, according to senior product Ted Romanowitz.

Daktronics Pixel Pitch LED Video Display

Daktronics showed off its latest generation of pixel pitch LED displays at InfoComm 2019. While the 1.5mm display was prominent at the show, the line comes in 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 1.9mm, and 2.5mm bezels. Daktronics offers a module access tool for easier service, which can be engaged and disengaged to preserve the integrity of the display face and LEDs.

Dynascan 88-inch Stretch

The new Dynascan 88-inch stretch LCD display offers an ultra-wide 32:9 aspect ratio. It is a modular design that can be installed stand-alone, dual-sided, or triple-sided. The screen features 1,000-nit image, and TrueColo calibration for quality.

LG Business Solutions Curved LED

LG had tons of eye candy at its extensive InfoComm booth, in a variety of form factors. Among them was its fine-pitch direct-view indoor curved LAPE series, which uses a specially designed flexible LED display module that supports true concave and convex curvature for virtually limitless design flexibility, according to the company. The fine-pitch LAPE series employs proprietary Dynamic Contrast Algorithm technology for a wide range of color and deep contrast. “There are some cool things you can do with direct-view LED. This [curved version] is something we’re really excited about because it’s something that can be deployed in all sorts of settings,” says VP of marketing Garry Wicka. “It’s front serviceable; each one of the panels is on a setup where it’s pressed in, so [integrators] pop that off and front-service all of these items, which is really a very easy way to do it.”

NEC Display UN Series  Near Bezel-less 55-inch Panels

During InfoComm 2019, NEC Display Solutions of America announced that it’s improving its UN Series of video wall panels by adding a near bezel-less 55-inch that now features enhanced factor color calibration for easy setup and color uniformity. The idea is to make video wall setup easier and the intensive color calibration and proprietary SpectraView Engine should move that goal forward. The new UN552S and UN552VS feature just 0.44mm inactive area surrounding an anti-glare, high-haze IPS panel designed for seamless multi-screen configurations, ideal for digital signage uses in retail, corporate, and broadcast environments.

“When it comes to video wall setup, making sure the color is just right is often the biggest pain point for customers,” said Ben Hardy, senior product manager, NEC Display Solutions. “That’s why we’ve engineered the UN552 line of video wall panels to have the easiest setup process by putting them through an intensive factory calibration process that ensures color uniformity, reducing customer frustration while providing the ultimate flexibility in color adjustment.”

The dispalys feature direct LED-backlighting, allowing for localized dimming and increased dynamic contrast ratio, according to the company.

Neoti Creative LED Options

This U.S.-based manufacturer offers indoor, outdoor, and what they call “creative” LED options. But their competitive advantage is in their middle-US location’s proximity for customer concerns. Neoti offers component-level repair and service capabilities for nearly all makes and manufacturers of direct-view LED Displays.

Planar TVF Complete LED Video Walls

TVF Complete is a new line of video wall solutions designed for multiple environments and applications. It is optimized for Full HD and 4K resolutions, coming in 109-inch, 137-inch, 164-inch, and 219-inch sizes. Each model includes LED display abinets, video controller, cables, wall mounts, trim and spare modules for easier maintenance.

Samsung 8K Display

The Samsung 8K display features artificial intelligence that will take a standard signal and utilize machine learning to upscale any signal to 8K. It features quantum processor 8K, quantum HDR24X, and direct full array 16X – concentrated zones of precision-controlled LEDs for ultra-deep blacks and pure whites.

SiliconCore Lotus 0.83mm Fine-Pitch LED Display

Featuring three SiliconCore proprietary technologies and 2000 nits brightness, the Lotus 0.83mm display consumes up to 50% less power compared to similar displays of its kind, the company says. It features SiliconCore’s latest feature, LISA – a proprietary encapsulation process that guards the high density LEDs and ensures color uniformity and a long lifetime. Its cool surface is dust and water resistant which makes it very durable and suitable for touch and custom install applications, with a very close viewing distance. A 4K resolution display can now be achieved at 144” with a smooth, touchable surface.

Features and Specifications

The SDVoE (Software Defined Video over Ethernet)-ready M4300-16X is a 16-port 10GBASE-T copper switch with an option for PoE+ across all ports in full provisioning mode. The M4300-16X is a half-width 1U switch that comes either with a non-PoE power supply or with a power supply capable of providing 480W of PoE power to the 16 ports.

The SDVoE-ready M4300-24FX is a 24-port 10GBASE-X SFP+ fiber switch with two shared 10GBASE-T copper ports. The M4300-24FX is a half-width 1U switch that dramatically lowers the cost of fiber-based project installations up to 24 nodes.

AI-Based Video Analytics

A first for the company was the introduction of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based video analytics solution. The REA-C1000, allows users to create video content in real time, without the need for specialized training, additional staff or equipment.

The compact and lightweight REA-C1000 uses AI-based video analytics technology to analyze the input it receives from connected cameras and automatically extract the object in focus to combine it with other images in real time. This technology uses motion/face detection and color/shape recognition, enabling the REA-C1000 to be the brain of any connected camera and AV setup. Optional features include handwriting extraction and presenter overlay, chroma keyless CG overlay, PTZ auto tracking, focus area cropping and close-up by gesture.

PTZ High-Def Cameras

Following the recently announced 4K BRC-X400 camera, Sony introduced the SRG-X400 and SRG-X120 as part of its range of FHD (full high definition) PTZ cameras. The cameras, which feature a wide viewing angle, support IP and are equipped with NDI|HX capability through an optional license. The NDI|HX option presents flexibility in simple and cost-effective IP-based live production systems when combined with other NDI-compatible hardware or software anywhere on the network. Both new models are available with a 4K upgrade option – a first for PTZ cameras.

Laser Projectors

Sony’s new VPL-FHZ75 (6500lm) and VPL-FHZ70 (5500lm) cater to the increased market demand for high brightness projection in midsize environments such as universities, corporations, churches, museums and entertainment installations.

Offering WUXGA resolution, both use a newly developed 0.76-inch LCD panel with an incorporated optical compensator to deliver bright and vibrant images with stunning contrast, offering true blacks and accurate-to-life color reproduction. Both models come with a new, innovative ‘intelligent setting’ feature that simplifies the installation process by automatically selecting the best configuration based on the projectors’ environment.

Other Products Demonstrated by Sony at InfoComm:

BRAVIA 4K professional displays, ranging in size from 43 to 85-inches. The BZ35F series incorporates  Kramer Control BRAINware.

Vision Exchange enables BYOD wireless sharing, improved communication and distance learning through Skype for Business, and smart Personal Note Taker and annotation capabilities. The latest version of Vision Exchange—Version 1.3— adds the ability to power on and off both the main unit and each pod simultaneously, as well as the ability to save snapshots automatically to a USB drive inserted into the main unit or pods.

Sony and UbiCast’s Miris Netcapture software and Miris Video Platform network-based lecture capture and enable interactive learning experiences. The UbiCast solution can also integrate with Vision Exchange to create more engaging video content.

Sony’s immersive Crystal LED display system features a 99 percent black surface area for enhanced contrast.

Sonic Surf VR audio technology combines multi-channel speakers, displays and specially developed software designed to simulate placing, moving and partitioning sounds in one space.

The VPL-GTZ240 2,000 lumen native 4K projector incorporates the latest Sony native 4K SXRD imager

Sony’s CMS for healthcare helps manage surgical videos and still images from one central location.

NUCLeUS is a smart digital operating room platform for today’s ORs.

The new UN552S and UN552VS feature just 0.44mm inactive area surrounding an anti-glare, high-haze IPS panel designed for seamless multi-screen configurations. The panels also feature enhanced OSD color control, easy content distribution, and software capabilities.

The UN552S features 700 cd/m2 of brightness, ideal for retail, corporate, cinema, or house of worship use, while the UN552VS features 500 cd/m2 of brightness, suited for applications where max brightness is not needed, such as broadcast and command and control. Like other panels in the UN Series, the UN552S and VS feature improved NDWC capabilities with corner adjustment, uniformity correction and quicker recalibration techniques. The displays also include both DisplayPort and HDMI out connections to daisy chain signals from the internal media player for easy video wall installation and management. Meanwhile, the new TileCut function ensures the image does not get cut off when displaying content on non-16:9 video walls – a must for customers who need to ensure their content is always properly displayed.

The UN552S and UN552VS will be available beginning in July; as of press time, no pricing information was available.

FHDQ130 130-Inch QUAD LED Display

The fully optimized 1080p QUAD LED display provides 130 inches of 4K visuals. It comes pre-calibrated out-of-the-box, removing the hassle of managing software and the various associated files, while ensuring the image is optimized for immediate use – whether in a boardroom, house of worship, retail or hospitality environment, or for digital signage.
