Anyway. Since Dragon’s Lair Austin is only 90 minutes away I made it a day trip, leaving some time after 8:00 and arriving there at 10:00. The first thing that struck me was the crazy line stretching out of the store which I waited in for a little bit before realizing that it was a HeroClix line. Dice Masters wasn’t until the afternoon and registration would open then. Seriously, over 120 people for that crazy game! The registration system involved lining up and checking my name against the preregister list, then having my name entered into the computer (I assume in the WKES) and being handed a ticket that was proof I was registered and allowed me to buy product later. For me it was painless and fast, outside of waiting in line, but I have no idea how it would be for people just showing up. Not to mention this seems largely up to the particular venue with guideline set up by WizKids, so everything might be different or poorly run elsewhere. For my experience all the Dice Masters events were fun and well done at Dragon’s Lair, but that was in the afternoon so I’m getting ahead of myself.

We played in a Rainbow Draft early and didn’t find out about the Tsarina promo until we were just about to sit down. Needless to say we were pretty happy. Those are given out for doing well, ostensibly winning, at the draft pods but how many pods and how often they’re run will be defined by how many people show up. One thing to note, those drafts take a long time. Everyone had to read every card since they were all unfamiliar, and then we played Swiss style rounds. Expect a few hours per draft event. The great thing is the draft format spreads the rarities around pretty evenly and every game I played was very close, usually coming down to a few points and a bad/good roll. Incredibly fun and exciting, especially with the new cards and dice. I don’t know if they were in the same box or if one was pulled from the handful of boosters from the the second box, but our group saw two Super Rares drafted that game.

After we broke for lunch we registered, and before the festivities started they opened product purchases up. We were allowed to buy an UXM starter and one booster, which may seem silly but they needed to reserve prize support for later and many people were showing up that hadn’t been there in the morning so it was all new to them.  There was also AvX stuff, but I don’t know the limits since I’m pretty full up on that at this point. Then the Swiss rounds started and I did pretty badly, but that’s another story. If you don’t want to play the meta, which is stupidly easy to predict right now, be sure you playtest your anti-meta team better than I did. Ultimately it didn’t matter since I didn’t expect to win in the first place and I still had some good fun the whole time. If you end up with extra time it was a great place to trade for cards that have slipped you by, but be sure you don’t leave your box full of Rares and Uncommons on your nightstand like… a friend of mine did. Yeah, I’d never do something like that.

By this time it was evening (rounds are 50 minutes minimum and we played three of them) and they were getting ready to start another draft while the top 16 played on in single elimination. The tournament rules were followed to a T, including timing and I assume scoring and it went smoothly the whole time aside from downtime between rounds. The store made multiple announcements after Swiss rounds to ensure that everyone with a ticket bought what they wanted before finally selling through the rest of their stock to anyone who wanted it. No crazy rush or crappy lines, everyone played nice and the purchases went quickly. Since it was fairly late after drafting and there were two groups playing, they did a single elimination before moving on to the Swiss style rounds, but at that point I was happy to give up the win; it was late and I was burned out. So much so, in fact, that a Super Rare Iron Man passed through the hands of three people before someone picked it out of the pile and yes, one of those hands was mine. Terrible. However, after that I went to go chat with the top players who were wrapping up the quarterfinals and getting ready to cut to the top four. Yes, many of the teams looked (un)shockingly similar, but I couldn’t tell you if that was because of the power level of the cards or because everyone was playing them. Perhaps a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. I can tell you that I was this close to winning before a Gem Keeper locked up my Dr. Doom. Poor, poor Doom. Webslinger ripped me a new one the match before that.

So at the end of night, around 10:30, I made the 90 minute drive back home and rolled around on my new cards and dice. Not really. But I did lovingly look at them and glance through a somewhat updated rulebook since it was the first time all day I was really able to do that. A busy day for sure, but packed to the gills with games and dice everywhere. Now, I couldn’t tell you how any of the other events will go. In fact, I don’t even think they’re all scheduled as one day events. I can’t tell you how HeroClix or Attack Wing went other than it sounded like a freakin’ circus in the main room until those barbarians got a few rounds of cuts. What I can tell you is that it was seriously fun despite my poor showing in the main event, everyone was super nice, no one smelled, and I got a)free and b)prerelease stuff. There were few hiccups and the judging system seemed to work well. I think there was only the head judge for Dice Masters but he certainly knew his stuff. I also didn’t particularly notice WizKids staff, it was pretty much the store employees who ran everything. So definitely go attend if you get the chance, and I hope everyone has as good a time as I did. Lastly, thanks to WizKids for providing the structure and product, and thanks to Dragon’s Lair Austin for hosting and running a great inaugural Open event!

It has become clear to the Players – they must go to WizKids at take the game away from them for the good of everyone.

WizKids resists saying “It’s our game, we are the most capable of handling the Phoenix Force!”  The Players disagree pointing to the lack of communication, OP cards, and countless gripes with what was in the Set-Up box.

A major battle ensues.  Losses (of interest) are inflicted on both sides, player counts dwindle and rules questions go without answers.

But from the Phoenix Force, Uncanny X-Men is released.  A FAQ forum is created with direct contact to WizKids rules lawyers!

The game brings about a calm amongst both the Players and WizKids.

“Ziran Was Right” t-shirts pop up.  The Players enjoy the new game but keep a weary eye on WizKids with the wishful thinking that history will not repeat itself.
