A Few Changes + New Men’s Subscription Box Reviews

A note from Brandy: We’ve been working hard at my site, and we are working to make it a gender-neutral place for all our subscription box reviews. To that end, new reviews of men’s subscription boxes are going up on my site (new name!) Hello Subscription. Recently he has posted:

Tom continues to write reviews of other subscription boxes (especially food, coffee, and wine) and you can find all of his subscription box reviews here. While we have continued to put up a few reviews on this site, over the next few months we’ll be moving them over to the main site and eventually redirecting this site and the individual reviews once we move them. I’ll be making a men’s homepage so you can access everything that you’d be interested in all on one page (though right now, the page with all of Tom’s reviews is pretty close!).

As we’ve always mainly posted reviews of man-friendly boxes like geek & gamer & nerd subscription boxes over at my site, we think you’ll find it more useful to have everything in one place. The men’s subscription box list has the added benefit of being much more up to date than the one here is. The coupons are very much more up to date.

Thanks, and if you have any specific requests, we are always open to them (but especially right now before we get to work building our new features!).

Wet Shave Club Review – January 2015 – Men’s Shaving Subscription Box

Wet Shave Club is a new subscription box devoted to the art of wet shaving (and 30 days of handsomeness). First-time subscribers will receive a modified box that includes a safety razor with handle & case, as well as a bristle brush, in case you aren’t already a wet shaving aficionado.

I’d already received a previous box (you can see the razor/brush there), this is a box for returning subscribers. I really enjoyed my initial shipment and have been regularly wet shaving so I happily agreed to review.

Lots of stuff to try in the January 2015 box. This month’s shipment included some new Trig blades and several botanical accoutrements. I’m saving the Edwin Jagger shave cream and after shave lotion for my dopp kit. The sandalwood lotion smells nice.

The Ursa Major wash and balm are great: the former is slightly minty, and the latter lanolin and licorice scented (at least to my untrained nose).

Also included was Crow and Sparrow’s Wares Aftershave Tonic ($6). This has a classic barber shop scent and feel; it is mildly scented. The Sudsy Soapery Shave Oil in “Twice Mint” ($8.95) was a great addition to my routine. I appreciate the multiple samples – it’s always nice to have a new scent to try or a different blend.

Along with the samples and extra blades is the centerpiece of the monthly box: the wet shaving soap. This month included Ellington’s Gentleman’s Shaving Soap. It’s the same as sold on their site ($10) but without the shaving can. This soap lathers well, provides a great shave, and has a classic masculine woody scent.

The cost of the samples definitely bring the value of the box up to the monthly cost. You can save on your subscription by opting for a longer plan – up to $7 off every box. I have definitely enjoyed using all of my Wet Shave Club products. I think it’s a great experience and an excellent alternative to conventional shaving subscriptions. I recommend trying it at least once.

January/February 2015 Five Four Club Review & Coupon

Five Four Club is a men’s clothing subscription club – sign up, pick a style profile and your sizes, and get clothes every month. My style profile is a “mix.” This subscription ships at the end of the month, and nearly always arrives in the first few days of the next month. This is technically the January box, but arrived February 3.

Skyline Heather Black Joggers ($60) This pair of sweatpants has a few great details, including a blue contrast zipper,

And non-bunching elastic at the bottom of the pants. They look like wool pants from a distance but wear like a sweatpant.

Sherlock Heather Gray Sweatshirt ($60) This has a unique weaving detail with the french terry loops on the outside of the sweater. Actually it’s a sweatshirt material but looks top notch. Both of these are definitely hybrid pieces that let you look not slobby while being super comfortable. Great for these frigid indoor months.

I’ve been very pleased with the last several months of this subscription, and especially with my choice to move to the “mixed” style profile.

February 2015 Bombfell Review

It’s an excellent service for a busy guy. For this delivery I opted for 4 surprise items “For the Weekend.”

February 2015 Bombfell

How Bombfell Works: When you sign up for Bombfell you fill out a style profile including all your measurements. You can also select the frequency (sometimes I set my Bombfell to come bi-monthly) and what you’d like to receive. You can pick out what you want clothes for (office, dates, weekend, basics, etc.) as well as the precise type of item you want (e.g., sport coat, jeans, t-shirt), as well as your budget. You can also select to be surprised.

Big Star Union Brushed Straight Twill Pants ($99) These were not really my style, and there was a warning about bleeding fabric (which I appreciated, but doesn’t work for a dude who washes 2 adults’ and 3 kids’ clothes).

I sent these ones back and am hoping for a different style next time (I loved the Penguin wool pants I received in my last shipment).

French Connection Waffle Henley ($56) Loved the style of this so I kept it. It looks great and is an excellent layer.

Johnnie-O Gingham Buttondown ($69) Easily my favorite shirt – loved the style, construction, the pre-washed fabric, and the “Tweener.”

You can tell my wife loved it too because she took a picture of it. This is perfect for me.

Descendant of Thieves Script Utility Vest ($79) I expected to hate this, and I totally didn’t. It’s some sort of limited edition in this style, I’m not sure of the details, but it was actually a great vest – but this brand runs small and it was snug on my midsection.

This was definitely unexpected but appreciated selection.

Plus you can store your piece in it. (My wife had way too much fun with photos this month.)

Bombfell usually includes some sort of silly doo-dad. These are great to give to your kids to keep their hands off the clothes.

February was a great month for Bombfell. I kept 2 items and returned the other two (free shipping). I selected four more surprise me items for the weekend for later this month. I prefer that good in-between style since I currently don’t need any strict office-wear. What have you been selecting?

Button Up A Month Review – Men’s Shirt Subscription Box

Button Up A Month is a new men’s shirt subscription service. You add shirts to your queue and they’ll ship them out to you Netflix-style (no need to return). I received a couple shirts for the purposes of reviewing this service.

Each month you’ll receive the shirt at the top of your list. You’re only charged for shirts sent and if there are none in your queue, no shirt!

I added a few to my queue and was sent the shirts at the top of my list. They’re 100% cotton and $16.99 each. There are a variety of colors and styles (I didn’t realize I’d get the top ones on the list so I didn’t try to get different ones). They’re fair quality with single stitching. I really liked that the tails were long. Each shirt arrived packed up like a shirt normally would be (on a card, wrapped in plastic) inside a poly mailer.

This subscription would be great for a man who needs to expand his shirt wardrobe inexpensively, a little at a time.
