Escape Door System benefits for retail environments

Abloy UK has launched a new video demonstrating how its Escape Door System (EDS) can help retailers balance security measures with safe, compliant escape routes in retail environments.

Retail environments are under increasing pressure to tackle issues such as run-out theft and unauthorised access to restricted areas. The video demonstrates how the ASSA ABLOY Escape Door System enables authorised personnel to move efficiently through secure spaces while maintaining control over sensitive areas and exit points.

It highlights how the EDS provides controlled egress and access through panic and emergency escape doors, helping to prevent unauthorised exits without compromising life safety.

A key feature explored in the video is the system's ability to resist forced exits and tampering. Doors remain secure even when subjected to physical pressure, helping to reduce losses, minimise risk and provide security teams with time to assess and respond to incidents.

The video also showcases delayed egress functionality, an important feature for retail settings where attempts at unauthorised exits can be deterred while maintaining compliance with escape regulations.

In addition, viewers can see how the system integrates with Central Management Control (CMC), allowing security personnel to monitor activity, remotely release doors and override delays when required.

During a fire evacuation event, the system automatically releases doors within one second, enabling occupants to exit quickly and without restriction. Even in the event of power loss or certain fault conditions, doors remain accessible for safe egress.

In a move away from traditional emergency exits designed with box panels and resting ledges, ACTIV-DOR features a full-length rebound panel with a chamfered finish to deliver a more refined and contemporary appearance that enhances any sports facility. A key priority in this design is to create a completely flush finish across the entire doorset. DHF is set to transform the industry with Building Hardware training launch

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has launched a new accredited training programme designed to give professionals across the building hardware sector the knowledge and recognised qualifications needed to support competence and career development.

DHF Core Competencies: Understanding Building Hardware is an innovative online learning programme leading to an Ofqual-regulated Level 2 certificate, accredited by the Awarding Body for the Built Environment (ABBE).

Developed for product managers, customer service teams, trade counter operatives and anyone working in or looking to enter the building hardware sector, the flexible programme provides a solid grounding in building hardware fundamentals while enabling learners to build specialist knowledge through a range of product-specific modules.

It is also ideal for employee induction and ongoing professional development. All learners complete a mandatory Core Module, comprising six guided learning units and multiple-choice assessments, before selecting at least one of 12 Product Modules. Additional modules can be purchased at any time, enabling learners to tailor their learning to their role and responsibilities.

On successful completion, learners receive a DHF Level 2 Certificate in Core Competencies: Understanding Building Hardware, as well as an Ofqual-branded certificate from ABBE. The certificate also lists every product module completed, providing employers with clear evidence of an individual's knowledge and achievement. To support learning, every participant can download a dedicated study guide containing module learning outcomes, guided note-taking sections and prompts to reinforce key concepts throughout the course.

"This programme, which launches on 30th July, represents a step change for the building hardware sector and is, without doubt, one of the most significant investments DHF has made in developing the competence of our building hardware industry," explains DHF’s Chief Executive, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.

"From the outset, we listened carefully to our members to understand the knowledge gaps that existed across manufacturing, distribution, technical support, and sales. We then developed a programme that directly addresses those needs while aligning it with the CPA's White Paper on Construction Product Competence, which has since evolved into the draft BS 8670-2 standard. As an industry, we believe we are ‘ahead of the curve’ by providing a qualification that reflects both current and emerging competence expectations."

The ABBE Level 2 Certificate in Core Competencies: Understanding Building Hardware is an Ofqual-regulated qualification, giving learners a nationally recognised qualification that provides employers with clear evidence of the knowledge element of the Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours (SKEB) framework. It creates a credible, structured route for individuals to develop professionally, while giving employers confidence that their people have acquired knowledge that is directly relevant to their role.

The programme is delivered through the DHF Training Academy, built on the digital learning platform that DHF invested in back in 2019. This provides learners with the flexibility to study at their own pace, while enabling managers, HR teams and training professionals to monitor learner engagement, progress and achievement through a dedicated management portal. It ensures organisations can actively manage competence across their workforce rather than simply delivering one-off training.

“We are incredibly proud to add this qualification to DHF's portfolio,” concludes Patricia. “We believe it will transform the way building hardware competence is developed, providing our industry with a robust, future-proof training pathway that supports individuals, strengthens businesses and ultimately raises professional excellence throughout the entire supply chain.

ONE-OFF SHOOTING BRAKES AT ZOUTE AND ZÜRICH AUCTIONS

Broad Arrow Auctions, driven by Hagerty (NYSE: HGTY), is proud to present two exceptional examples of the shooting brake genre at its upcoming Zoute Concours Auction and The Zürich Auction.

The first of the two desirable shooting brakes is one that made headlines when it was revealed in July 2026. The work of renowned Dutch designer and coachbuilder, Niels van Roij Design, the 2026 Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage is a modern-day interpretation of the famous 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Shooting Brake commissioned through Chinetti Motors.

The second is a unique 1987 Aston Martin Lagonda Series 3 Shooting Brake with a conversion by Switzerland’s Roos Engineering Ltd that adds significantly to the dramatic wedge-shaped design of this iconic model.

“Shooting brakes have always captured the imagination of collectors and enthusiasts,” says Gregory Tuytens, Head of Consignments for Belgium and The Netherlands at Broad Arrow Auctions.

“Niels van Roij is already renowned for his incredible Ferrari and Rolls-Royce creations and his latest, the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage, created great excitement when it was revealed in July. It presents a very exciting opportunity for a collector to acquire a genuine one-off with remarkable modern provenance.”

Revealed in July 2026 at the prestigious Royal Automobile Club Concours and lauded by the world’s top motoring press, the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage is the latest of the genre to be handcrafted by renowned Dutch designer and coachbuilder, Niels van Roij. Paying tribute to the iconic Daytona Shooting Brake commissioned by Luigi Chinetti Jr in 1972, this superb example of modern coachbuilding and bespoke design elegantly reimagines the original with its striking black paintwork, cognac leather interior and central-mounted instrument binnacle.

Strictly a one-off, it is based on a 2009 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and while the impressive V12 beneath the long bonnet is largely untouched, almost every element of the car has been altered to create something truly unique. This includes the 3D printed carbon fibre within the elegantly sculpted nose, the beautifully hand-formed bodywork that extends to the curvaceous rear with its deep window, and the diffuser that surrounds the bespoke double-barrel shotgun exhaust tips. The electrically operated butterfly doors that curve around the handcrafted shooting brake luggage compartment feature strong and flexible Plexiglas and intricate, hand-milled hinges, each a work of art in themselves.

Showing only 43,802 kilometres at the time of cataloguing—and selected use since its conversion, the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage required over 15,000 hours of design, engineering and craftsmanship to create and presents a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire a genuine piece of modern coachbuilding history.

It will be presented at the Zoute Concours Auction on 9 October 2026 at the prestigious Approach Golf in Knokke-Heist, Belgium where Broad Arrow returns in collaboration with Zoute Grand Prix Car Week. Approximately 70 exceptional collector cars will be offered for sale, spanning a wide variety of categories, marques and price points.

The Aston Martin Lagonda was revolutionary for its imposing wedge-shape design, luxurious interior and futuristic technology. This Series 3 is one of only 76 produced by the British marque and the only one to have officially been approved by the factory for conversion as a shooting brake. Acquired in 1996, it was entrusted to Roos Engineering Ltd in Switzerland, who undertook the dramatic transformation, including using factory-supplied parts.

Completed in 2000, the conversion involved a significant overhaul of the mechanical components, but it is the shooting brake style that truly captures the imagination. The windows and luggage compartment bodywork were all custom-made, as were the carpets and other trim elements. The interior was redesigned in Connolly leather and Alcantara and the rear bumper features revised parking and signal lights to ensure they can be seen when the tailgate is open.

One of the rarest iterations of the Aston Martin Lagonda, this Shooting Brake conversion captures the attention with its unique styling and precise Swiss craftsmanship.

“The Aston Martin Lagonda Series 3 Shooting Brake is one of the most dramatic models of its era,” says Paul Gaucher, Head of Consignments for Switzerland at Broad Arrow Auctions. “While distinctively British in character, is so perfectly suited to the Swiss market—it is exceptionally bespoke and exclusive while also being tremendously usable. It’s a car that is equally at home packed with skis in St. Moritz as it is full of shopping bags on Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich.

This unique Aston Martin will be one of approximately 60 collector cars that will be presented at The Zürich Auction on 7 November 2026. Returning to the luxurious Dolder Grand for the second year as the official auction partner of Auto Zürich, the auction promises an unforgettable experience for buyers and sellers on the shore of Lake Zürich.

ADSA Welcomes Familiar Face in New Member-Focused Role

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has appointed experienced industry professional Steve Rutherford as its new Membership Development Officer, reinforcing the association's commitment to supporting members, strengthening engagement and helping businesses maximise the value of their membership.

Steve brings more than 20 years' experience within the automatic door industry to the role, alongside a strong track record in training and skills development. Most recently, he played a key role in delivering the industry's pioneering Powered Pedestrian Door Technician apprenticeship programme, helping to develop training content and support more than 70 apprentices through the qualification.

In his new role, Steve will act as a dedicated point of contact for ADSA members, working closely with businesses across the UK to understand their challenges, identify opportunities for support and ensure they are fully benefiting from the association's extensive range of services, resources and training opportunities.

The newly created position reflects ADSA's continued growth and the increasing diversity of its membership base. With more than 600 member organisations, ADSA is investing in stronger member engagement and ensuring businesses of all sizes have access to consistent support, guidance and opportunities for professional development.

Said Steve: “One of the most important aspects of this role is listening to members and understanding what they need from ADSA. Whether that’s training, professional development, technical support or simply helping them navigate their membership, I want to make sure businesses are getting real value from being part of the association.

“I’m looking forward to meeting as many members as possible, learning more about their businesses and helping ensure ADSA continues to deliver the support, guidance and expertise that the industry needs.”

As part of his role, Steve will undertake a programme of member visits and meetings across the UK, gathering feedback that will help shape future services and training provision.

A particular area of focus will be skills development and competency, with ADSA continuing to explore how it can support members as industry requirements evolve and expectations around training, qualifications and continuing professional development increase.

ADSA Managing Director Ken Price welcomed the appointment: “Steve’s extensive industry knowledge, practical experience and passion for skills development make him an excellent addition to the ADSA team.

“Our membership has grown significantly in recent years and it is important that every member, regardless of size, receives the same high level of support and engagement. Before joining ADSA, Steve spent four years delivering the PPD apprenticeship programme at South Staffordshire College, helping to address skills shortages within the sector and supporting the next generation of automatic door engineers. He previously worked for GEZE UK.

Away from work, Steve lives in Tamworth with his wife, Jackie. Between them, they have four grown-up children and share their home with a much-loved Border Collie. A keen runner, Steve has completed almost 300 Parkruns and remains an enthusiastic supporter of Aston Villa. When time allows, he and Jackie enjoy touring the UK in their caravan and spending time with family and friends.

A front door has always been one of the first things people notice about a house. Today it plays an even greater role in shaping first impressions and reflecting the overall character of a property.

Whether homeowners are renovating their entire property or simply looking to refresh their exterior doors, they are paying attention to how every element of their property works together. They are placing a greater emphasis on design and looking for products that reflect the style of their property

When choosing their front door, homeowners are now increasingly making style and colour decisions based on how it will look alongside other features in their home such as windows, brickwork, cladding, pathways and landscaping.

The recent Door and Window Fittings UK Market Report by Barbour ABI notes that today's mix of architectural styles requires products that are "adaptable and versatile". Homeowners are expecting more design choices that allow them to create an entrance which reflects the style and character of their property.

Traditional designs continue to have a strong place in the market, particularly for period properties, but demand for contemporary designs continues to grow as more homeowners look to create a clean, modern entrance that complements wider renovation and improvement projects.

What defines a modern front door?

Modern door designs utilise clean lines, flush finishes, symmetrical panel layouts, and ladder-style designs. These features all contribute to a simpler, more balanced appearance that suits both new build homes and modern renovation projects.

Glazing has followed the same direction. Rather than bold, decorative glazing patterns, many homeowners are choosing slim, geometric glazing that lets in natural light while maintaining privacy. This reflects the wider move towards minimalist design, with Barbour ABI’s report also noting that minimalist and slimline frames that maximise natural light continue to be in demand.

The same trend can be seen in colour choices too. Traditional favourites such as red, blue and green remain popular, but anthracite grey, black and Chartwell Green are increasingly being selected to match windows or provide a contrast to render and modern brickwork.

From fitting doors to giving advice

For installers, these conversations often extend beyond simply replacing a front door. Homeowners are looking for advice on styles, materials and glazing options that complement the property while meeting their practical requirements.

Manufacturers are responding with broader ranges of modern styles and configurable options. While appearance is important, homeowners also expect secure and durable hardware, with high security products also being a key driver shaping today's market. For installers, that means specifying doors that combine contemporary styling with robust construction and high-quality hardware.

EM-B EXPANDS INTO CERTIFIED FIRE DOOR SETS

Architectural ironmonger and door specialist Em-B Solutions has expanded its product offering with the introduction of a new range of independently certified fire door sets.

Em-B has secured BM TRADA Q-Mark certification for its fire door set offering and will initially provide FD30 and FD60 timber fire door sets designed to meet the requirements of commercial, education, healthcare, residential and social housing projects.

The move enables Em-B to provide a more complete door solution, bringing together certified fire door sets, architectural ironmongery, access control and door automation under a single specification and supply partner.

Unlike many traditional door set suppliers, Em-B is positioning the new offering around the complete door set rather than the door leaf alone. The company believes that increasing regulatory scrutiny and a growing focus on building safety are driving demand for more coordinated approaches to door specification and compliance.

As part of the new service, architects and contractors can specify a wider range of hardware, finishes, access control systems and automation solutions than is often available through standard door set packages, helping maintain design intent while ensuring compatibility across the complete assembly.

The launch also reflects wider changes taking place within the fire door sector as the industry prepares for the transition from BS 476 fire testing towards the European BS EN 1634 and BS EN 13501 framework ahead of the 2029 deadline set out in Approved Document B.

Delivering high-quality and durable ironmongery for a pioneering education project

The doors to Wednesfield Technology Primary School in Wolverhampton were opened to its first cohort of pupils in September 2024. HOPPE (UK) products were selected for the architectural ironmongery package...

They were specified and supplied by Mark Parry at Locks and Fittings, a family-run business based near the site and a long-term partner of HOPPE (UK). As a GAI-registered architectural ironmonger, Mark led the specification to ensure full compliance with British Standards and the particular needs of a primary school setting.

Commissioned by Shireland Multi Academy Trust and delivered by main contractor Tilbury Douglas, the 446-place school is designed to support a technology-led curriculum in a purpose-built environment.
It is situated on the site of the former Edward the Elder School, which was demolished in 2022 after 112 years, replacing a derelict building with a forward-thinking, low-carbon facility designed to Passivhaus standards.

To maximise fire safety and energy performance – aligning with the Trust’s ambition to reduce its carbon footprint across the region – the school was constructed using a Structural Insulated Panel System (SIPS) method.

Architectural ironmongery tailored to modern teaching environments

All ironmongery was packed door-by-door to streamline on-site installation and was supported by early sample provision to the door manufacturer, allowing precise machining of factory-prepared doorsets.

A range of HOPPE (UK) products were supplied across the school, each selected for durability, user safety and low-maintenance operation:

Cam action door closers were used throughout classrooms and internal fire doors, offering ease of use for younger pupils while maintaining compliant closing forces.
Grade 4 stainless steel lever handles provided high durability for a high-traffic environment, designed to withstand regular use and occasional misuse.
Pull handles were chosen in extended lengths, ensuring accessibility for both children and adults.
Heavy-duty projection and floor-mounted doorstops, including magnetic collapsible versions, were used to reduce damage from impact and tampering.

Specification to suit a school environment

The ironmongery specification was shaped by the practical demands of a primary school, where hardware must withstand frequent use, support safeguarding and remain straightforward for staff to manage.

Non-coin turn and release sets were fitted to toilet doors in line with the Department for Education requirement for schools to use a bathroom lock “that can be locked from the inside by turn or lever and can be released from outside by a non-coin slot key”.

This allows authorised staff to gain emergency access using the appropriate release key while reducing the risk of misuse, tampering or improvised opening by pupils. This makes them particularly well suited to school environments, where privacy, supervision and safe intervention all need to be balanced.

Euro-profile escutcheons complemented the ironmongery with a clean, tamper-resistant finish.

Locks, sash locks and bathroom locks were supplied to the door manufacturer as mortice samples for precision cutting ahead of installation.

Intumescent packs were included to meet fire resistance requirements across all relevant doorsets.

Supporting sustainable education

While the ironmongery specification was not directly influenced by the building’s Passivhaus status, the selected HOPPE products aligned with the overall ethos of quality, longevity and reduced environmental impact through low maintenance and high durability.

Seamless delivery and local legacy

The ironmongery package was delivered over a six-month period from January 2024.

Despite typical late-stage variations such as additional doors and keying requirements, all components were supplied and scheduled efficiently, helping to ensure a smooth handover.

The project also carries personal significance for the delivery team. Both Mark Parry and colleagues from HOPPE (UK) had family connections to the former school on the site, adding a sense of pride to the successful delivery of a landmark facility for the Wednesfield community.

ASTON MARTIN VALEN: THE MOST POWERFUL FRONT ENGINED SUPERCAR

Aston Martin is proud to introduce Valen; the world’s most powerful front-engined car from a manufacturer and the most powerful front-engined V12 supercar in the company’s 113-year history. The latest in an illustrious line of limited production twelve-cylinder specials, Valen explores provocative design themes and extremes of performance in pursuit of maximum visual impact and a truly distinctive driving experience.

Pushing the limits of design and engineering to achieve a supercar of unique drama and capability, Valen is clad in a full-carbon fibre body and powered by the brand’s most powerful version of its 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine with 850PS and 1000Nm of torque from just 2500rpm. Combined with targeted hardware and extensive software calibration to steering, suspension and braking systems, Valen delivers a driver-focused configuration to match its raw performance.

Bestowed with an assertive design and character, Valen required a name with equal gravitas and meaning. Derived from the Latin word ‘valens’, with the etymology referencing "strong," or "powerful", Valen was the perfect name for Aston Martin’s most powerful front engined V12, continuing the long-standing dynasty of ‘V’ names.

The project, the latest special from Aston Martin’s bespoke service, Q by Aston Martin who previously gave us Valour, Valiant and DBR22 to name a few was realised thanks to the unique scope and expertise of Aston Martin’s newly formed Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) Department.

Aston Martin CEO, Adrian Hallmark said: “The latest in a bloodline of limited production special series models from our bespoke service, Q by Aston Martin, Valen’s world-beating performance required a design to capture the raw motion and unmatched output of our V12 powertrain. With more power, less weight, and a spectacular soundtrack, the dramatic design is backed up by equally dramatic performance.”

ENGINEERING

Reinforcing Valen’s position as the most powerful front-engined supercar, is a sharper-shifting 8-speed ZF transmission, which uses race-proven shift strategies developed for Aston Martin’s Vantage GT4 race programme, with crisper and more engaging shifts in all drive modes, which has reduced Valen’s 0-60mph time to just 3.0 seconds*. Top speed is electronically limited to 214mph.

To bring out the best from the V12 powertrain, Valen adopts a performance drive mode philosophy; Sport, Sport+ and Track modes to create a true feeling of urgency and focus befitting supercar levels of performance and dynamics.

Careful attention has also been paid to Valen’s throttle mapping, which changes according to drive mode. For spirited road driving in Sport and Sport+ modes the throttle pedal uses a shorter map to deliver more throttle earlier in its travel, while Track mode trades that urgency for a longer and more progressive delivery when on-limit precision is the priority.

Valen’s commitment to performance extends to a significant weight saving of up to 110kg over the core V12 platform – a central focus of the programme. This is achieved through use of a variety of lightweight motorsport inspired materials including carbon fibre, aluminium, titanium and magnesium. An optional lightweight pack featuring machined-from-solid aluminium suspension arms, knuckles and titanium chassis bolts makes a 16.9kg weight saving alone through meticulous manufacturing and extreme attention to detail.

Through its new lightweight titanium exhaust system, Valen has a soundtrack to match its performance. The system has been developed specifically for Valen and features new micro mufflers ensuring compliance with homologation regulations; while saving weight and enhancing the sound quality that’s such an essential part of enjoying a V12-engined car to the full. It’s a key part of the strategy to ramp-up emotion to create a car of unmistakable visual, dynamic and aural character.

Valen’s quad exhaust system evokes the design language of a mid-engine hypercar, moulded into the form of a front mid-engined supercar, with four tailpipes split between two upper and two lower. These tailpipe finishers are formed with 3D printed titanium with the focus on lightweighting and material craftsmanship. The upper exhaust exits are always open, with the lower exits valved, opening depending on drive mode for the ultimate emotive soundtrack.

Valen’s roar has been carefully tuned to deliver a more performance focused audible experience, reducing lower frequencies while amplifying higher tones. Optimised system dimensions enhance the progression to a dramatic crescendo, while the upper exhaust outlets are tuned akin to organ pipes to generate resonance at higher engine speeds, resulting in a significant increase in character and presence.

DESIGN

Valen’s dramatic frontal treatment is characterised by deeply recessed slimline headlamp units which are hooded beneath the sharp leading edge of the plunging bonnet line. Together with the more angular treatment of the radiator aperture, bold geometric mesh grille and acutely angled front splitter create a distinctive character

The bonnet itself features a single top vent with perforations at the trailing edge. On each side the traditional side strake has been sharpened and elongated and is now fully incorporated into a large functional vent which extracts air from the wheel arch and guides it down the rounded flanks. The strake feature extends almost the full length of the door before the swollen rear haunches widen to cover the rear wheels.

The lower section of each side is dominated by a stepped sill, which creates a tightly cinched waistline that emphasises the muscular front and rear fender sections. Sharp saw-tooth vortex generators positioned on the trailing edge of the sills pull highspeed airflow from beneath the car to reducing lift and generate downforce. New side-glass quarter windows add to Valen’s profile and demonstrate commitment to creating a car with a unique identity.

Valen’s rear-design treatment is equally bold. Instead of a fixed rear window and trunk lid both features have been replaced by a solid tailgate. Featuring an aerodynamic wing in its upper section, the tailgate opens onto a sizeable trunk (170 litres) which is available with an optional bespoke luggage set (Touring Pack) to make the most of the available space. A soft, tailored cover can be unfolded to protect the paintwork when lifting cases in and out.

The interior of Valen has been developed around a clear principle of visual lightness, reflecting the significant mass reduction engineered throughout the car. Central to this is a slim centre console, enabled by advanced 3D-printed components and incorporating the performance-focused switchpack introduced on Valhalla. Angled towards the driver, the inclined console creates a more focused and controlled cockpit environment, reinforcing the connection between driver and machine.

Valen’s cabin offers a choice of newly developed Sports Plus seats, designed to combine support with long-distance comfort, or lightweight carbon fibre performance seats for a more focused driving experience. Together, these options allow customers to tailor the cockpit to their intended use and needs.

Functional items such as the air vents have been changed to further reduce visual clutter and a new palette of anodising colours has been developed, expanding the scope for embellishment and personalisation offered via Q by Aston Martin.

Inspiring future female talent

Endurance® Doors has demonstrated its commitment to nurturing future talent by supporting the WiME Raising Aspirations Programme in partnership with Women into Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME) and The Vale Academy.

The initiative is designed to encourage more young women to consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), showcase the breadth of opportunities available within modern manufacturing and engineering, and provide practical insight into modern industry, helping to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world careers. Confidence building is another key aim of the programme.

The programme reflects Endurance® Doors' wider focus on investing in local communities, developing the workforce of tomorrow and helping to promote greater diversity across the manufacturing sector.

Students were inspired by female industry professionals, including Endurance® team members, Emma Sloan and Jessie Meakin who led a series of workshops designed to help participants identify their strengths, develop confidence and think about their future ambitions.

Other speakers included Sarah Cook from Wood and Lisa Carter from Munich Re who shared their own career journeys and experiences and highlighted the value of determination, resilience and self-belief.

The second phase of the programme included a visit to the Endurance® Doors manufacturing facility where students were given a guided tour of the extrusion department by Ryan Clarkson.

The visit offered valuable first-hand insight into a modern manufacturing environment, allowing students to observe production processes, ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse range of roles available across the sector, including engineering, manufacturing, operations, quality, logistics and business functions.

Delivering PAS 24 Compliance with UAP Hardware: TS008 Letterplates, Fullex Locks and Beyond

In today’s construction landscape, compliance with PAS 24 is no longer optional; it is essential. Developed as a benchmark for enhanced security performance, PAS 24 provides a rigorous testing method to ensure that doorsets can withstand opportunistic and forced-entry attempts commonly encountered in the UK.

However, one of the most important, and often misunderstood, aspects of PAS 24 is that it tests the entire doorset as a complete system, not just individual components. This means that every element, from the locking mechanism to the letterplate, plays a critical role in achieving compliance. UAP’s integrated approach to hardware specification addresses this challenge, ensuring that all components work together seamlessly to meet and exceed PAS 24 requirements.

Understanding PAS 24

PAS 24 has been developed to assess how doors and windows resist attack methods typically used by opportunistic intruders. These attacks are often low-skill but highly effective if weak points exist within the doorset.

Unlike component-level standards, PAS 24 evaluates the combined performance of hardware, glazing, locks, and accessories. A failure in any one component, no matter how small, can result in the entire doorset failing the test. This approach makes hardware selection critical. Polar NE secure NHS contract on ‘completely unique’ £65m hospital project

A window and door specialist has secured a major new contract to help construct a £65m NHS mental health hospital.

Middlesbrough-based Polar NE will install more than 150 reduced-ligature windows and doors at Bradford's Lynfield Mount Hospital.

Yet incredibly, the team won't initially step foot in Yorkshire.

Instead, Polar NE will install the windows over 300 miles away at a factory in Lisburn, near Belfast - before each 'living room-sized' unit is carefully shipped across the Irish Sea.

It is another example of this unique style of construction - known as modular - being used to build an NHS mental health hospital.

"We have worked on modular builds for traditional hospitals, but this is a complete unique mental health space, and we hope it will act as the blueprint for other projects going forward," said Polar NE's Partnership Manager, Nick Sutton.

"Many trusts will want to see the result, because there is so much belief in the modular approach. It is safer, quicker and provides a much more controlled environment throughout the build.

"Securing another key NHS contract shows the trust repeatedly placed in Polar NE on projects like this, where innovation is so crucial."

The project - headed up by main contractor McAvoy Group - will see the current central building refurbished, with en-suite facilities added across two wards, while an extra two-storey ward will be added to the existing site.

Outdoor garden spaces and recreational areas are also set to be added as part of the redevelopment, which is expected to be complete in 2028.

According to Polar NE's Operations Manager Rob Lofthouse, the work will see the award-winning company "use a bit of everything" from its innovative range of unique products.

These include Polar’s secure window and door products, developed specifically for demanding healthcare environments.

"This is exactly the type of project where our experience and product range come together," added Rob.

"Time and time again, we find solutions that meet the very specific needs of mental health environments, and if we don't have them, we are uniquely skilled in that we can create them from scratch.

"Additionally, Lynfield Mount Hospital marks the latest collaboration between Polar NE, P+HS Architects and Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, and it shows the confidence and trust repeatedly placed in us when it comes to delivering complex projects.

"These projects require close collaboration, innovation, and a genuine understanding of what healthcare providers need - it is a sector we've pushed the envelope in for over 25 years - and we are thrilled to once again be doing that at Lynfield Mount Hospital."

Gordon Murray Reveals the S1, a Highly Exclusive V12 Manual Supercar

Gordon Murray Special Vehicles has revealed the new ‘S1’ supercar at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, a touring-focused evolution of the S1 LM that exudes timeless confidence and celebrates a unique approach to Driving Perfection.

The naturally aspirated, V12-powered, manual supercar is an evolution of the S1 LM platform, which is optimised for mechanical grip, rather than high downforce, to offer a distinctive driving experience. The revised suspension adds comfort and refinement for long distance journeys, while retaining Gordon Murray’s signature Driving Perfection philosophy. The S1 commission is the latest model from Gordon Murray Special Vehicles, where all seven design principles are pushed to their most extreme expression.

While the S1 shares its family DNA with the S1 LM (the Special One), its character and purpose are distinctly different. The S1 LM was conceived as the most intense, road-legal, race-inspired celebration of Gordon Murray’s 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours victory. The S1 evolves the elegant design language of the S1 LM, while reframing the set-up for fast, engaging, long-distance road driving.

Professor Gordon Murray, CBE, Group Executive Chairman said: “With the S1, we wanted to show how much beauty and purity there is in this design when the more extreme aerodynamic elements of the S1 LM are stripped away. It has the same intensity, response, and engineering integrity, but has been tuned for a different purpose. This is a car you could drive along the coast from Los Angeles to Monterey in real comfort, still enjoying every gearshift, every corner, and every note of the V12 when the road opens up. It is exclusive, analogue, and deeply driver focused, but also more elegant, more refined, and more usable over distance.”

The S1 removes the S1 LM’s large, fixed rear wing, long front splitter, and deep side skirts; every exterior body panel is new. The result is a cleaner silhouette inspired by classic proportions.

A new active rear aero system is integrated into the bodywork, adapting to the demands of high-speed stability and braking. The focus moves away from extreme downforce and towards mechanical grip, balance, and confidence on the road.

At the heart of the S1 is a bespoke 4.2-litre naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 producing up to 690 PS. Derived from the same lineage as the S1 LM engine, the 4.2-litre unit has been developed to deliver exceptional response, while retaining the sound, immediacy, and character expected from a Gordon Murray engine. The low-inertia, high-revving engine features a suite of competition-spec components such as silicon carbide-coated lightweight pistons, titanium valves, titanium connecting rods, and a dry-sump lubrication system. With effortless touring in mind the S1 features a broader torque range, delivering 80% of torque from just 2,500 RPM and around 500 Nm at 7,000 RPM.

The engine is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, featuring a touring sixth gear as standard. New straighter gearbox cable routing helps deliver the precise, rifle-bolt shift feel that remains central to the car’s physical connection between driver and machine.

The S1 retains the S1 LM’s width, track, lightweight suspension architecture, and wider tyres, but ride height is increased by 10 mm and the damping is retuned for greater compliance while preserving steering precision, agility, and feedback.

Lightweight engineering remains fundamental. Ultra-lightweight carbon fibre body panels, lightweight suspension components, and Gordon Murray’s obsession with weight reduction contribute to an overall target weight below that of the T.50, despite the S1’s more luxurious cabin trim, enhanced sound system, and additional acoustic refinement.

The S1 features bespoke front and rear lighting, with daytime running lamps integrated into the light cluster, differentiating the headlight signature from the S1 LM, where the running lights sit in a narrow blade below the headlight. Unique main beam auxiliary lights sit low within the air intake at the nose of the car – a nod to the 1992 Monaco show car design by Murray, which featured similar lower lights, an element that never saw production.

Further unique features include distinctive A-pillar-mounted mirrors that integrate a discrete rear-view camera system; and all-new lightweight wheels, inspired by the iconic Monaco 1992 show car. The engine bay presents the V12 as a centrepiece, with the polished Inconel exhaust and 24-carat gold-plated heat shield. A bespoke and exclusive V12 by Cosworth with an increased displacement of 4.2 litres. The new unit develops 690 PS and a shrieking 12,100 RPM. With 500 Nm of torque, 81 percent of which is, astonishingly, available as low as 2,500 RPM.

Inside, the S1 retains the central driving position and low scuttle height that define Gordon Murray’s driver focus, while introducing a more refined and luxurious interpretation of the S1 LM cockpit. Premium leather, bespoke fabrics, tailored trim, touring-level seat comfort, enhanced acoustic insulation, revised infotainment screens, and a bespoke lightweight audio system make the three-seat cabin more suited to long-distance use.

The driver can tailor the car’s feel through switchable, selectable power steering, choosing assistance for relaxed cruising or a more unfiltered connection on dynamic roads.

The new dihedral doors with integrated drop-down glass replace the Lexan race-inspired ticket window from the S1 LM. These doors allow a wider opening to allow greater ingress and egress, further underlining the S1’s shift towards everyday usability.

Production of the S1 will be exclusively limited to 64 units worldwide. Each car will be individually commissioned and specified by its owner, pricing remains undisclosed.

Since unveiling the T.50 supercar in 2020, Gordon Murray has established a family of ultra-exclusive, lightweight, driver-focused supercars that celebrate naturally aspirated engines, mated to manual transmissions, and uncompromising attention to the relationship between driver and machine, on road and track. Now, the S1 carries that philosophy into a more refined, usable, touring-focused form.

Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens appointed Chief Executive Officer of DHF

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced the appointment of Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the retirement of Bob Perry. Patricia takes up the role after more than ten years with the federation, during which she has played a leading role in its growth and development.

Since joining DHF in 2015 as UK Marketing Manager, she has progressed through a number of senior leadership positions, including Commercial Manager, Head of Commercial Operations, Commercial Director and, most recently, Deputy CEO.

A Chartered Marketer and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Patricia has helped shape many of DHF's most significant achievements over the past decade. She has led the federation's rebrand, expanded its industry-leading training and qualifications, introduced CSCS card schemes and played a key role in developing industry competence frameworks. Her work has strengthened DHF's position as the leading trade association representing the UK's door, gate, shutter and building hardware industries.

As CEO, Patricia will lead the federation's strategic direction, working closely with the Board, Executive Committee, members and industry partners to continue raising standards across the sector through technical guidance, training, advocacy and member support.

"I am absolutely delighted to be taking on the role of CEO at DHF,” says Patricia. “Having been part of the federation for more than a decade, I know first-hand the difference we make to our members and to the industries we represent. It is a real privilege to lead such a knowledgeable and dedicated team.

"Our purpose remains clear; to help businesses succeed while raising standards across the industry. We will continue to champion competence, professionalism and compliance, expanding our training and qualifications to meet the changing needs of the sector. A modern interpretation of the ever-popular RT060 Orta lever, the RT070 Idro introduces a precisely machined linear knurled pattern on the grip. Safeguarding Starts at the Door

In nursery and early years settings, door hardware plays a critical role in safeguarding. Beyond basic security, doors must prevent children from leaving unnoticed, restrict unauthorised access from outside and maintain fully compliant emergency escape at all times.

FUHR’s autosafe 833 and 835 KiGa multipoint locking systems have been developed specifically for these sensitive environments, providing a certified, application-led solution that removes the need for adapted or improvised hardware.

The multipoint locking system incorporates two interconnected lock cases linked via a drive rod, enabling independent operation of two lever handles positioned at different heights. Novoferm Insulated Roller Door Achieves SBD Accreditation

Security is an increasingly important consideration in residential design, particularly when it comes to garage doors. Often used to store valuable items, and in many cases providing direct access into the home, garage doors can represent a potential point of vulnerability if not properly secured.

To address this, Novoferm’s Novorol 77 insulated roller garage door has now been added to the company’s range of Secured by Design (SBD) accredited products. The roller garage door incorporates 77mm insulated slats, providing enhanced strength and durability compared with standard roller door systems. The door is suitable for openings up to 3 metres wide and is designed and accredited for behind fit installation, while still offering flexibility for a wide range of garage structures.

Novoferm’s Novorol 77mm roller garage door has been tested to STS222 and achieved BR1 classification, demonstrating resistance to realistic intrusion attempts. Certification is independently verified through Element, a UKAS-recognised certification body, ensuring the product meets recognised industry security standards.

As part of the SBD accreditation process, the product is subject to regular re-testing and factory inspections, helping ensure that manufacturing standards and security performance remain consistent over time. This ongoing verification provides reassurance to installers, specifiers and end users that the door continues to meet the required security criteria.

Aluminium’s 45-year lifespan is changing the fenestration conversation

While price will always be a big part of the conversation when selling windows and doors, according to Endurance® Aluminium, the long lifespan of aluminium is helping to shift the focus.

Consumers are becoming increasingly motivated to save money on their energy bills in the short term and do the right thing by the environment and their purse strings in the long-term.

“Homeowners are becoming more aware of the long-term impact of their buying-decisions,” says Scott Foster, sales and marketing director of the Endurance Group.

“Yes, they want immediate savings, but when offered products that will last longer, cost less to maintain, and have a lower environmental impact over time, they understand that premium aluminium windows and doors are a stronger long-term investment.”

Aluminium systems can last between 40 and 50 years, which compares to the typical lifespan of PVC-U which is 25 to 35 years.

When it comes to recyclability and reuse, aluminium scores well too because it is infinitely recyclable without any loss of quality. It is estimated that approximately 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today, thanks to its infinite recyclability, and most modern systems now contain high levels of recycled content ensuring they deliver a lower environmental impact over time.

Q by Aston Martin and Aston Martin Newport Beach's Heritage Edition

Aston Martin Newport Beach, in collaboration with Aston Martin’s bespoke service, Q by Aston Martin, has unveiled an exclusive collection of five bespoke ‘Heritage Edition’ sports cars that celebrate some of the marque's most memorable paint colours from the 1960s and 1970s.

Each one-of-one commission pairs an iconic heritage exterior paint finish – remastered for the collection with the brand’s latest paint technology – with handcrafted Q by Aston Martin details, creating a modern interpretation of Aston Martin's rich design legacy.

Available exclusively through Aston Martin Newport Beach, the ‘Heritage Edition’ collection showcases five current 2027 model-year sportscars finished in newly revived heritage paint colours selected by the Q by Aston Martin design team.

Beyond the exterior colours, each interior includes bespoke Q perforated fluted seats, used for the first time in the new Vantage and new Vanquish; Q Heritage Aston Martin logo embroidery on the center armrest, and exclusive ‘Heritage Edition’ sill plaques. The Heritage Edition DB12 coupe, DB12 Volante and Vanquish feature Dark Walnut Open Pore Wood Inlays.

DB12 Volante – Pale Primrose

Finished in Pale Primrose, this DB12 Volante revives one of Aston Martin's most recognisable historic paint finishes. The shade was immortalised on the cover of the 1958 DB4 sales brochure before being selected by Corgi for its celebrated Aston Martin model, which later became the inspiration for the iconic James Bond DB5 toy of the mid-1960s.

As the world's first Super Tourer convertible, the DB12 Volante combines a hand-built 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 671 horsepower with exceptional refinement, delivering effortless performance alongside open-air driving exhilaration.

DB12 coupe – Pacific Blue

The Heritage Edition DB12 coupe wears Pacific Blue, a colour first offered on the DB4 before appearing on both the DB5 and DB6. Q by Aston Martin revived the finish after studying an original Pacific Blue sample from the historic DB6 colour configuration brochure, faithfully bringing the classic hue into the modern era.

The DB12 is a true Super Tourer and is powered by Aston Martin's 671-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8, the DB12 coupe blends exhilarating acceleration, precision handling and class-leading dynamic capability while redefining the grand touring segment.

Vanquish coupe – Tudor Green

The flagship Vanquish coupe is presented in Tudor Green, a metallic finish closely associated with Aston Martin models of the 1970s. The colour complements the muscular proportions of today's halo sports car while recalling the elegance and grandeur suggested by England's historic Tudor era.

As Aston Martin's flagship front-engine sports car, the Vanquish is powered by a new 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 producing 824 horsepower, delivering breathtaking performance, exceptional driver engagement and a top speed of 214 mph.

Vantage coupe – Winchester Blue

Named after the historic cathedral city of Winchester in Hampshire, Winchester Blue was one of several British town-inspired colours offered by Aston Martin during the 1970s. It became particularly well known on the legendary V8 Vantage, making it a fitting choice for today's performance-focused Vantage Coupe.

With a 656-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, the latest Vantage delivers sharper responses, greater agility and exceptional driver confidence, embodying Aston Martin's vision for the next generation of front-engine sports cars.

Vantage Roadster – Mink Silver

The collection is completed by a Vantage Roadster finished in Mink Silver, inspired by the elegant pale metallic shades that became popular on DB6 models throughout the 1960s. More than 100 DB6 examples were finished in Mink, a colour celebrated for complementing the graceful lines of what remained Aston Martin's best-selling model until the arrival of the DB7.

The Vantage Roadster combines its 656-horsepower twin-turbo V8 with an electrically operated folding roof, providing uncompromising sports car performance and dynamic capability while delivering an exhilarating open-air driving experience.
