Garage Door Solution for Leading Automotive YouTuber’s Dream Workshop

Hörmann UK has successfully completed a striking installation of three RollMatic 2 roller garage doors together with a matching side door for well-known automotive YouTuber George Austers. With a growing audience of over 100,000 subscribers to his ‘Everything Cars’ channel, George has been documenting the creation of his ideal garage and workshop through his popular video series, ‘Dream Car Workshop Build’.

The installation forms a key part of a bespoke three-bay oak-framed garage and workshop, designed to combine premium aesthetics with high functionality. Hörmann UK was selected for the project due to its renowned German engineering expertise and strong reputation within the garage door market.

The project features three RollMatic 2 roller shutter doors and a matching side door, all finished in Jet black RAL9005. The bold finish provides a contemporary contrast that enhances and complements the natural oak structure of the building.

Specified and installed by Hörmann UK’s technical door team, the choice of roller doors was driven by both practical and visual considerations. With plans to install a car lift in one of the bays, space efficiency was critical.

Unlike traditional up-and-over or sectional doors, the RollMatic 2 system eliminates the need for internal horizontal tracks, maximising usable space within the garage. Maintaining a cohesive aesthetic was also a priority, leading to the selection of matching materials and finishes across all doors, including the side entrance door.

Each roller shutter door is equipped with advanced features, including wind locks, compensation fitting kits, and integration with Hörmann’s 868 MHz BiSecur remote control system. Additionally, the doors benefit from built-in Bluetooth connectivity, enabling operation via the Hörmann BlueSecur app on smartphones and tablets.

For added reliability, the doors are spring counterbalanced, allowing easy manual operation in the event of a power failure—eliminating the need for cumbersome crank handles.

Commenting on the project, George Austers said: “The doors installed by Hörmann have completely transformed the look of the building – the design, colour and functionality of the doors are perfect. They do exactly what I need them to do.

The moral and technical case for safer, better evidenced doorsets

In a market shaped by standards, certification, and regulation, it is easy to treat compliance as the final measure of product responsibility. Does it meet the standard? Is the product correct for the intended application? Those questions matter, but they are not enough on their own...

For doorsets, particularly those designed to deliver fire performance, the industry must look beyond minimum compliance and ask a more important question: does the finished doorset provide the level of safety, evidence, and real-world performance that customers, residents, and homeowners have the right to expect?

That is both a technical question and a moral one.

Product standards are documented rules and specifications that define the quality, safety, and performance requirements a product must meet. They create a shared framework for testing, specification, and accountability.

But standards are not the same as responsibility. They tell us what must be achieved at a given point in time. They do not remove the need for manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators, and specifiers to think carefully about product suitability, component compatibility, and how a doorset will perform once it leaves the test environment.

A doorset is not a single component. It is a system. The lock, cylinder, protective hardware, hinges, keeps, seals, frame, threshold, and door leaf all play a role in final performance. If one element is changed or substituted without the correct supporting evidence, the performance of the complete doorset can be affected.

That is why evidence matters.

Evidence such as a field of application should not be treated as a document that simply sits in a file. It is the technical evidence behind any performance claim. It shows what has been tested, which components were used, which configurations are covered, and where the boundaries of that evidence sit.

When that link is clear, everyone in the supply chain has more confidence. Customers can trust that the finished product reflects the evidence behind it. Specifiers can see why a solution is suitable. Fabricators know what they can manufacture. Installers understand what they are fitting and maintenance can be conducted correctly.

When that link is weak, risk enters the process.

A compliant component does not automatically create a compliant doorset. A similar product is not always an equivalent product.

For fire doorsets, poor specification or unsupported substitution can compromise the Golden Thread before the product reaches site. For enhanced security doorsets, a fragmented approach can create weak points that are not obvious when individual components are viewed in isolation.

Responsibility beyond the minimum means recognising these risks early.

Robust UK steel doors enhance security at new Padel Shed as part of major refurbishment

Leading steel door manufacturer, Robust UK, has supplied several external steel fire exit doors in custom sizes to NextGen Industrial Doors for a new sports padel centre in Huddersfield, as part of a £1.5 million refurbishment project.

NextGen Industrial Doors approached Robust UK as the existing doors had corroded and were no longer fit for purpose. Robust UK were chosen for their competitive pricing and high-quality steel fire exit doors, which meet the security needs of the premises and the aesthetic requirements of the new padel centre.

The key challenge was to achieve a uniform appearance across all doorsets, despite each opening varying slightly in size. Robust UK recommended its OUTA-DOR solution for seven single and one double doorset, with each doorset custom-built to exact opening dimensions, allowing for a seamless installation and ensuring a perfect fit.

All doors featured a powder-coated finish in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey and were fitted with Briton panic hardware compliant with BS EN 1125, delivering a sleek uniform appearance while fully meeting fire exit regulations. The two-point Briton hardware secures the door at both the top and bottom, increasing stability and enhancing security against unauthorised entry, offering more reliable performance in the event of an emergency.

Unlike a traditional timber door, this versatile steel door solution offers significantly improved security with the ability to withstand knocks, dents and wear far more effectively. TENANTS REFUSING IMPROVEMENTS COULD PUT CARBON TARGETS AT RISK

A new social housing industry survey has uncovered a growing issue in the sector that could be putting providers' carbon targets at risk.

Holistic Approaches to Low Carbon Retrofit at Scale, sponsored by Eurocell, a leading manufacturer and recycler of PVC-U windows and doors, surveyed a broad area of the industry, with respondents including housing associations, local authorities and social housing organisations.

The responses revealed a major shift in the obstacles facing social housing providers. Tenants refusing improvements is now the fourth most common barrier - sitting only behind regular challenges like costs, the age of housing stock, and a lack of external skills.

But why is this happening?

The rise of tenant refusals

Tenants blocking improvements has moved up from eighth in the same survey in 2024 (out of 11 factors). Compounding this issue, the report found that a lack of resident education has also risen to become the fifth most significant barrier to decarbonisation. This issue ranked at the very bottom of concerns in 2023.

Tenants have the right to refuse access to teams looking to improve properties, but it’s clear that this has become a more prominent issue in recent years.

A major driver of this resistance is the fear of upheaval. The report backs this up, showing that 31% of housing organisations cite "resident and occupancy constraints" - specifically pointing to disruption, the loss of room space, and the need to temporarily rehouse residents - as a primary barrier to delivering whole-house upgrades.

But the industry is also using terminology that tenants lack understanding of, with 37% of social housing professionals admitting the term "retrofit" is confusing for tenants and another 22% saying it was "somewhat problematic".

The research further exposed a critical shortfall in how residents are prepared for the physical reality of these home upgrades, including the necessary disruption. While half of respondents rely on in-person meetings, other methods fall short of explaining the complex new technology being installed;
45% use phone calls or texts.
Only 16% use demonstrations or workshops, and a mere 13% utilise apps.
17% of providers admitted they have "no formal engagement" with tenants regarding these works full stop.

This lack of communication likely leads to the 24% who report "resident confusion or misuse" of the new systems after installation.

Better dialogue on disruption and benefits crucial to hitting national targets

Speaking on the findings of the report, Gary Doxey, Commercial Manager at Eurocell said: “Overcoming these tenant blocks is critical given the pressing national timeline. The Warm Homes Fund has allocated £1.29bn of funding for projects to introduce a series of combined retrofit measures to properties across the country until September 2028.

“Furthermore the target of EPC ‘C’ remains for all privately rented and local-authority run homes by 2030, which will mean that the intensity of retrofits and upgrades is going to need to significantly increase to deliver the scale required. If communication and open dialogue is key, we need to as an industry define how we approach tenants to make sure in cases where there is confusion or a lack of awareness of the reasons behind these upgrades - and the temporary upheaval involved - it’s all made clear.”

Holistic and whole-house approaches to retrofitting housing are acknowledged as the most effective means of tackling the upgrades in one-hit, and ensuring the balance is struck between different, often competing elements, and residents’ needs.

However, to deploy these whole-house solutions effectively, the sector must secure resident buy-in as this method is very disruptive to those living in social housing.

The industry largely agrees on the solution: 67% of providers agreed that improving communication is the key to reducing complaints and ensuring residents know how to operate their upgraded homes too. However, this communication must start long before installation, addressing fears of disruption head-on to ensure these vital upgrades aren't blocked before they even begin.

FBS Hörmann Supports New Bidfood Distribution Hub

Lincolnshire-based FBS Hörmann has successfully completed the installation of loading bays, level access doors, and temperature-controlled door systems at Bidfood’s new distribution centre in Worcester, reinforcing a long-standing partnership between the two businesses.

A trusted supplier across Bidfood’s nationwide estate for many years, FBS Hörmann was appointed to deliver a fully integrated solution designed to meet the operational demands of the high-performance facility.

The Worcester project comprised nine complete loading bays, each equipped with Hörmann HTL2 dock levellers and SPU67 fully automated industrial sectional doors and bespoke dock pads and bumpers.

The dock pads and bumpers were designed and manufactured in-house by FBS Hörmann specifically to accommodate the varied vehicle types within the Bidfood fleet, ensuring safe, efficient and consistent dock operations while minimising the risk of vehicle and building damage. In addition, a Hörmann SPU67 sectional door was installed to serve a dedicated level access bay, providing greater flexibility for loading and unloading operations.

Internally, FBS Hörmann supplied and installed two Mavicold freezer doors and six Mavipass chiller doors to support temperature-controlled operations within the facility. The high-speed, isothermal Mavicold and Mavipass chiller doors are specifically designed for cold environments, using rapid stacking technology to reduce heat transfer and maintain cold chain integrity. Their robust, frost-resistant construction, combined with a range of safety and control options, ensures reliable, energy-efficient performance in demanding settings.

Well known within the industry, Maviflex joined the Hörmann Group in 2019. DHF announces new appointments and the expansion of its workforce

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced a number of new appointments as the trade association continues to strengthen its team and support for members across the industry.

As part of the changes, Kay Scattergood, becomes PA to General Manager & Secretary, Michael Skelding. Following many years of dedicated service, Kay Scattergood has chosen to reduce her working hours and workload, transitioning into a new role within the organisation and remains a highly valued member of the DHF team.

Kay has been with DHF for more than 38 years, progressing from Senior Secretary to Manager of the Administration Team and will continue to bring her extensive knowledge and experience to support the organisation.

Joining the organisation in April 2026 is Annie McKay as Office Manager, a newly created role for DHF. Annie is responsible for overseeing all office operations and the day-to-day running of the organisation’s administrative functions, including IT, HR, and the management of DHF’s externally recognised certifications such as ISO 9001 and Cyber Essentials. She brings seven years of office management experience across a variety of sectors, where she has overseen daily operations and supported large teams. Annie now manages the administration team at DHF and helps ensure the smooth running of the organisation.

DHF has also welcomed Huw Barnett as Senior Training and Compliance Officer. Huw brings more than 26 years of experience in the door, gate and barrier industry, and his career has included both hands-on operational roles and senior management positions, giving him experience across installation, maintenance, team leadership and operational delivery. Throughout his career, Huw has represented employers at a range of industry group meetings, contributing to discussions around safety standards, best practice and new technologies. In his new role, Huw will provide technical expertise to DHF members and deliver training across the sector.

“We are delighted to welcome new team members, Annie and Huw to DHF at an important time for the organisation,” says DHF’s Deputy CEO, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “Both bring considerable experience, professionalism and energy to their roles, and their appointments reflect our continued commitment to supporting members and strengthening the services we provide industry wide.”

DHF has also announced the appointment of two new directors to its board. Wolfgang Gorner, Managing Director of Hörmann (UK) Ltd, joins the board with decades of experience across the building products, perimeter security, windows and doors sectors. Wolfgang began his career with RMC Group in 1988 before moving into perimeter security products with B&G Group in 1995. In 2000, he moved into the windows and doors industry, holding senior positions at REHAU, Epwin and Inwido before joining Hörmann in 2018 to lead its UK operation. Speaking about his appointment, Wolfgang said he is “passionate about the door, gate and barrier industries and believes DHF plays an important role in promoting high standards and supporting a level playing field across the sector”.

Also joining the board is Ricky Walker, Managing Director of Expert Access Solutions. Ricky has long supported DHF and been an active voice within the industrial doors sector throughout his career, including during his time as Solutions Director at dormakaba. He has contributed to a range of DHF activities including product group meetings, apprenticeship discussions and technical committee work focused on helping customers understand legislative requirements and industry standards. Ricky also brings significant board level and commercial governance experience and is committed to supporting the continued growth and professionalism of the federation.

Unifying wireless digital locks and smart key access gives security managers much more control

Sometimes a digital system cannot cover all the openings an organisation needs. Readers, escutcheons and security locks can equip many doors. But what if they also want to deploy intelligent key-operated locking for alarm boxes, medicine stores, server rooms or power units? HKC and Abloy UK celebrate success at The Security Event 2026

HKC and Abloy UK have reflected on a highly successful appearance at The Security Event 2026, following three busy days at the Birmingham NEC where both brands welcomed a record-breaking number of visitors to their stand.

The exhibition provided an ideal platform for the two ASSA ABLOY companies to demonstrate the strength of their integrated security offering, with installers, integrators, consultants and end-users all engaging with the latest technologies on display.

Throughout the event, visitors experienced live demonstrations of a broad range of solutions spanning access control, wireless and wired locking, digital key systems, intruder alarms, cloud-based management platforms and integrated life-safety technologies.

The stand attracted strong interest from security professionals looking for smarter, more connected solutions capable of addressing the evolving demands of modern buildings and critical infrastructure.

DHF welcomes clarity on UK CBAM ahead of 2027 introduction

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is encouraging manufacturers and importers across the construction and hardware supply chain to start preparing for the introduction of the UK’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which comes into force on 1st January 2027.

CBAM is a developing carbon reporting and taxation framework designed to address the carbon emissions associated with imported goods. The scheme will work alongside the existing UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) and apply a carbon price to certain imported products, ensuring imported goods face a similar carbon cost to those manufactured domestically.

The UK Government has confirmed that CBAM will initially apply to specific sectors, currently aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, and iron and steel, with goods identified at commodity code level (the list of commodity codes within the scope can be found in Annex B: https://bit.ly/4tF7dGJ). Businesses importing £50,000 or more of CBAM goods within a 12-month period will be required to register.

“The introduction of CBAM represents a significant shift in how carbon accountability will operate across international trade and manufacturing,” explains Michael Skelding, General Manager and Secretary of DHF.

“While the initial scope is focused on upstream materials and high carbon sectors, the effects will inevitably filter down through construction supply chains, including the door, hardware and security sectors.

"Manufacturers and importers throughout the supply chain will increasingly be asked to demonstrate transparency around embodied carbon and sourcing practices. Preparing now will place businesses in a much stronger position as regulation develops.”

CBAM has been designed to reduce so called “carbon leakage”, where manufacturing moves to countries with less stringent climate regulations. The mechanism also aims to encourage lower carbon manufacturing globally, improve emissions transparency, and create a fairer competitive environment between domestic and imported goods. The European Union has already implemented its own CBAM framework, with the UK scheme following approximately twelve months later.

“The direction of travel is clear,” concludes Michael. “Carbon reporting, verification and supply chain transparency are becoming central to doing business within construction and manufacturing. DHF will continue supporting members by monitoring developments closely and providing guidance as further detail emerges.”

Under the UK framework, importers will be able to reduce the UK tax payable where imported goods have already been subject to a recognised carbon pricing scheme, such as the EU CBAM, provided the appropriate verification documentation is available. The Door & Hardware Federation is continuing to engage with industry stakeholders and government developments to help members understand the implications of CBAM and prepare for future compliance requirements.

Hörmann SPU F42 Door Delivers Reliability and Performance for RNLI Lifeboat Station

Hörmann UK industrial trade partner, Norwich-based Cooks Doors, has successfully completed the installation of a Hörmann SPU F42 sectional door at the RNLI Lifeboat Station in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire. Designed to perform in some of the UK’s most demanding environments, the new door provides the RNLI with a robust, reliable, and highly efficient solution to support its vital operations.

Measuring an impressive 7500 x 3650mm, the SPU F42 sectional door was specified for its strength, durability, and consistent performance in what is a challenging coastal setting. Manufactured from galvanised steel with a solid, double-skinned construction and a high-grade polyurethane foam core, the door offers excellent thermal efficiency, helping to maintain a stable internal environment within the lifeboat station. With a thermal insulation value of 1.2 W/m²K, the door helps reduce heat loss, supporting energy efficiency and creating a more comfortable working space for the RNLI crew.

Given the exposed coastal location, resistance to the elements was a key consideration. The SPU F42 achieves Class 3 performance for both wind load and water tightness, helping to protect the station interior, equipment, and lifeboats from harsh weather conditions. Additional corrosion protection has been applied to the door fittings to further enhance longevity, ensuring reliable operation despite constant exposure to salty sea air.

The door is finished externally in Gentian blue (RAL 5010), complementing the lifeboat station’s appearance, while the off-white interior finish (RAL 9002) helps to brighten the internal space. Two rows of vision panels were incorporated into the design, allowing increased natural light into the building and improving visibility without compromising strength or security.

Operational reliability is critical for the RNLI, where rapid response times are essential. The SPU F42 is powered by a 400v three-phase operator, providing smooth, dependable day-to-day operation. In the event of a power failure, a manual hand chain ensures the door can be operated, maintaining access at all times. Safety has also been prioritised, with an integrated safety edge that automatically stops the door if an obstruction is detected, helping to protect personnel, vehicles, and equipment.

The installation of the Hörmann SPU F42 sectional door will help ensure that RNLI Mablethorpe are able to launch quickly and effectively in all conditions, ultimately helping them continue their lifesaving work along the Lincolnshire coast.

SUPERSPORT S: FULL SEND – IN MINIATURE

Bentley has launched a limited edition collection celebrating Bentley’s most exhilarating and dynamic film ever, Supersports: FULL SEND, featuring Travis Past rana. The combination of 666 PS, rear wheel drive and a highly developed chassis and aerodynamics package unleashed a new level of performance ability for Bentley, showcased in a gymkhana-style film shot at Bentley’s campus in Crewe.

The new collection includes two replica scale models, in 1:18 and 1:43 scales, of the #199 Supersports that was used in the film . Plint h-mounted, the models include fine details such as the dive planes, side sills, fender blades, rear diffuser and fixed rear wing as fitted to the full-size car.

For the film, a unique FULL SEND livery was commissioned with Deathspray, a London based artist who has gained recognition for his graphic works in racing culture. The livery is characterized by its bold, monochromatic theme with contemporary bright green accents, complete with green tinted windows, all authentically replicated on both model s along with the painted wheels – green at the front, white at the rear.

The interior of the FULL SEND car is also faithfully recreated, including the lever for the hydraulic handbrake that allowed Pastrana to dance the car around the Crewe factory.

Two artistic prints also supplement the collection. Depicting either the burnout at the start of the film or the power-sliding through the factory, the design livery inspired images are individually numbered and screen printed by hand.

FULL SEND: The beginning

Supersports: FULL SEND is a celebration of the new Supersports, Pastrana’s extraordinary precision and ability, and the Bentley factory itself, recipient of significant investment and growth over the last five years.

To showcase the car’s agility, Pastrana worked with Bentley in September 2025 to create a gymkhana-type film within the grounds of Bentley’s factory, originally constructed in 1938 on Pyms Lane in Crewe – Bentley’s own ‘Pymkhana’.

Supersports: FULL SEND was conceived in April last year, when the new Supersports provided the opportunity to create a totally new kind of film for Bentley. With the green light given by Bentley’s Board of Management, work started in Bentley’s R&D department to prepare a Supersports development vehicle to be as extreme as possible.

Production of ‘customers full sized’ Supersports begins in Q4 2026 ahead of first deliveries at the start of 2027. The new Supersports will be available in the following countries and areas: UK, Europe (EU27 plus Switzerland and Turkey), USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Japan, Oman, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar and Kuwait.

Competence and Transparency: A New Era for Fire Door Safety

As the built environment navigates a period of significant reform, Karen Trigg of Allegion UK examines the two principles that are proving fundamental in reshaping fire safety standards.

The fire door safety model is changing. Improved building safety requirements and the demand for greater accountability have been the driving force behind new regulation and guidance. However, it is the growing relevance of competence and transparency that is redefining how responsibility is understood across the supply chain.

Competence and transparency are far from new concepts, but in the wake of regulatory updates, their interdependence is helping to form a framework through which higher standards can be achieved. More than ever before, the ability to specify, install and maintain effective fire safety systems - such as fire doors and their hardware - hinges on demonstrable expertise. Crucially, that expertise must now be reinforced by clear, accurate and accessible information.

Whether approaching a new development or retrofit project, displaying a sufficient level of capability and clarity is now a prerequisite for compliance. Not only must decision makers show confidence in the products specified and installed on fire doors, but also in the data that underpins those choices. Whilst legislation outlines what is expected of responsible parties, how are competence and transparency defined in theory? And in what way can professionals translate this into practice?

Concepts defined

In the context of fire doors, both safety and compliance are compromised when gaps emerge between regulatory expectations and execution. A certified fire door will typically compartmentalise a space for 30 to 60 minutes, preventing the spread of smoke and fire and providing occupants with a critical opportunity to escape. However, an ineffective fire door system can lose its integrity within minutes, with common failures often identified as the result of incorrect specification, poor installation and inadequate maintenance.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that fire doors should be installed by a ‘competent person’, yet the demand for competency extends beyond installation alone. Specifiers, maintenance professionals and responsible persons must all demonstrate capability past general awareness. In fact, individual competence is defined as possessing the appropriate skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours (also referenced as SKEB), as outlined in The Building Safety Act, BS 8670-1:2024.

The Building Safety Act also stresses the importance of transparency, whereby those involved in building design and the management of high risk buildings must refer to the ‘Golden Thread of Information’ as part of their duties. Following years of legislative reform, there is a higher expectation for clear product documentation, with greater transparency able to support more informed decision making. For this, the ‘Golden Thread’ acts a single source of truth, providing clear, accessible and accurate records of buildings and the systems used within them.

Further emphasis is being placed on product information through the Construction Products Reform Green Paper and the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI). These initiatives focus on how manufacturers communicate product information and aim to eliminate misleading claims by ensuring performance data is clear, verifiable and up to date. The emergence of Digital Product Passports (DPP) - expected to become a legal requirement for CE marking - will strengthen this approach further and, when implemented, will enable stakeholders to access product performance records and testing data in real time.

Converting theory into practice

These evolving standards send a clear message: both competence and transparency must be embed into every stage of the decision-making process. Professionals across the supply chain must demonstrate that fire door assemblies meet the required standards, and in doing so, it is critical to recognise that these two principles go hand in hand.

From specification and installation to inspection and maintenance, even the most capable individual is limited without access to accurate information. Equally, comprehensive product data holds little value if it is not understood or properly applied. In line with the SKEB framework, continuous learning and professional development are essential, with ongoing training helping to ensure that individuals maintain and enhance their capabilities as industry standards, products and regulations continue to evolve.

Manufacturers also play a pivotal role in advancing the relationship between competence and transparency. Many conscious manufacturers are investing in end-to-end product support, including detailed technical literature, installation guidance and training resources. These efforts are helping to build awareness and skills in key areas, whilst assuring capability and raising industry benchmarks. The implementation of digital tools is making information more accessible too, and is equipping professionals with the means to specify, install and maintain fire door safety products with confidence.

In practice, professionals are encouraged to review fire door hardware specification, installation and maintenance as specialised tasks. During installation, for example, installers must look to follow manufacturer guidelines and fitting instructions, which should be supplied with all third-party certified fire doors and hardware. Similarly, competent fire door assessors must ensure that the entire assembly is fit for purpose, reviewing certification, door integrity, glazing, gaps, seals, hinges and closing mechanisms in the process. When a fire door is not operating as intended, it is essential to seek out expert advice where required, ensuring maintenance is carried out both quickly and professionally.

With this in mind, reliable fire door systems should always be supplied with comprehensive product information, including performance records, third-party certification, technical product data sheets and installation guidelines. Transparent, accurate construction product information verifies whether a system complies with necessary standards, and by combining this with the development of SKEB, professionals are making the right steps toward effectively managing fire door safety across the built environment.

The relationship between competence and transparency is about more than compliance, however. By following both principles, professionals will be equipped with the right knowledge and are supported by reliable information, fostering a much-needed culture of trust. Ultimately, this integrated approach may contain the key to raising fire door safety standards and delivering a safer built environment for all.

The awards celebrate excellence, innovation and commitment across the fencing industry, and recognise companies and individuals who continue to raise standards across the sector.

The Gate & Barrier Contractor of the Year category gives contractors the opportunity to showcase the quality of their work across all sectors, with entries judged on standards of precision, attention to detail, innovation, creativity and overall workmanship.

As part of the entry requirements, companies must also submit key safety and compliance documentation including a Risk Assessment Method Statement (RAMS), a Compliance & Residual Risk Assessment and a Declaration of Conformity. These documents are essential in demonstrating that installations are safe, compliant and professionally delivered.

All finalists will be invited to attend the awards ceremony, which will take place at Old Trafford in Manchester on 12th November 2026.

As part of its continued work across the industry, DHF remains committed to promoting gate safety and compliance. ADSA Leads on Industry Standards Changes

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is playing a central role in informing and influencing a series of significant changes to standards and regulations affecting the powered pedestrian door industry across the UK.

With multiple frameworks under review, ADSA is actively involved in the development of standards amendments in four key areas:

· new machinery regulation for powered doors and turnstiles

· a long‑term overhaul of construction products to define how doors and other openings are tested and classified

· updates to BS 8214 to bring powered fire doors clearly into scope

· a complete refresh of BS 7036‑0 to BS 7036 to give clearer, more consistent guidance on risk assessment and safety for powered door systems, speed lanes, turnstiles and manual revolving doors.

This stems from ADSA’s involvement on national and European committees such as BSI and CEN which directly contribute to the evolution of standards and their alignment to the EU requirements. This work will define how products are designed, specified, installed and maintained in the years ahead.

ADSA Technical, Standards and Regulation Manager Darren Hyde said: “Our job on these committees is to make sure what’s written into the standards properly represents our industry. But all of this work ultimately comes back to one thing: improving the safety of the end user by making sure powered doors and access systems are properly risk‑assessed, secure against misuse and specified to consistent standards.”

One of the most immediate areas of change is the transition from the EU Machinery Directive to the new Machinery Regulation, which introduces enhanced requirements around safety, traceability and protection against malicious interference - reflecting the growing connectivity of modern building systems.

ADSA has been closely involved in shaping the associated standards, ensuring they align with real-world industry practices while addressing emerging risks linked to smart technologies.

Alongside this, the EU Construction Product Regulation is undergoing a major overhaul, introducing a more consistent approach to how product performance is measured and declared. While this represents a longer-term shift, ADSA is already engaged in early-stage discussions to help shape a framework that will ultimately apply to a wide range of construction products, including doors and access systems. The UK Government intends to align with the new EU regulations - outlined in a recent White Paper.

ADSA is also contributing to updates in fire safety standards BS 8214, including the integration of powered pedestrian doors into fire door design guidance for the first time. Additionally, ADSA is leading the forthcoming revision of BS 7036, which will provide enhanced guidance on risk assessment and risk reduction, helping to create greater consistency in safety decisions across the sector.

As these changes progress, ADSA is committed to keeping its members informed and prepared through technical bulletins, CPD sessions and collaboration with manufacturers and suppliers.

By acting as a conduit between regulators, standard setting bodies, manufacturers and installers, the Association is ensuring that information is shared accurately and at the right time - not only helping the industry respond to change but actively shaping it, ensuring the powered pedestrian door and automated entrance control industries remain safe, compliant and fit for the future.

Supporting Architects and Inspiring Bespoke Projects

Consort Architectural Hardware will unveil a unique combination of digital innovation and hands-on craftsmanship at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week.

The relationship between architectural design and hardware specification has traditionally been a fragmented one. Today, a greater number of projects require collaborative design tools, and professionals need innovation in this space. Consort Architectural Hardware aims to meet these modern architectural demands with the launch of its intelligent Revit integration software.

With its new Revit integration system, Consort is introducing a connected workflow between architectural models and door scheduling. The advanced digital platform enables architects to upload and analyse Revit models directly within the application, supporting an efficient data-led approach, where door data is interpreted, structured and prepared for hardware scheduling.

Through secure access and a purpose-built Revit plugin, users can establish direct communication between their model and Consort’s platform. With a unique project ID, architects can initiate a structured data extraction process that captures valuable information including door parameters, attributes and key project information straight from the model. Once complete, both the architect and Consort’s team receive confirmation, ensuring transparency and design alignment from the outset.

Following analysis, the workflow can transition seamlessly into the technical stage. A mapping interface aligns Revit parameters with the internal scheduling structure, ensuring critical data - such as room locations, door types, performance requirements and dimensional attributes - is translated accurately. The system then generates a comprehensive door schedule, with minimal manual input required, significantly reducing the risk of errors in the process.

A standout feature of Consort’s new platform is its interactive visual interface, which includes linked 2D and 3D models. With a suite of visuals, users can navigate the project intuitively, selecting doors within the schedule and instantly locating them within the model, or vice versa. This bi-directional functionality further enhances coordination, particularly on complex schemes, and allows for rapid validation of information.

With the door schedule in place, estimators can prepare detailed hardware sets tailored to each door, using Consort’s product data to ensure consistency and compliance throughout. Once finalised, door schedules, specifications, updated parameters and BIM objects are exported back into the Revit model. Each door is also embedded with a hardware set reference and a smart link, providing immediate access to detailed product information, imagery and technical documentation.

Consort is complementing this new digital innovation by showcasing its bespoke product capabilities and material expertise at Clerkenwell Design Week. In partnership with Material Source, Consort’s team of experts are inviting visitors to stand MSS7 between 19th - 21st May 2026, where they can explore products up close and take away samples of finishes and materials. Between metals, stone, leather and specialist finishes, complete freedom will be offered in material selection, with expanded finishing capabilities ensuring colour and surface quality align with project intent.

McLaren and Garage 59 celebrate World Endurance Championship success

Garage 59 secured McLaren’s second FIA World Endurance Championship victory in five races after showing impressive speed at Spa-Francorchamps.

The team was in the mix throughout all three free practice sessions, where the focus was on following up the season opening pole position at Imola while getting the Bronze-rated drivers comfortable with the McLaren GT3 EVO around the demanding seven-kilometre Grand Prix venue.

“Huge congratulations to the whole Garage 59 team on an excellent race and our first WEC win of the season! The drivers all performed flawlessly, and the team executed the pitstops superbly. This sets us up nicely for Le Mans where, as Mclaren Motorsport, we will continue to work closely with Garage 59 towards another strong performance,” commented Giorgio Sanna, Head of Motorsport, McLaren Automotive.

Qualifying 11th (#58) and 15th (#10) on the grid, the drivers made impressive progress in the race. Antares Au quickly began moving forward, gaining six places across his two stints which included a number of decisive overtakes.

Silver-ranked driver Tom Fleming took over for the middle two hours and climbed from ninth to second place, ending his stint less than a second behind the leading car. Marvin Kirchhöfer then brought the car home over the final two hours, applying relentless pressure to the leading Ferrari.

In the end, the decisive moment came during the final pit stop. The Garage 59 crew produced an exceptional stop to get the car out and force an error from the race-leading team, which was subsequently handed a drive-through penalty for an unsafe release. That left Marvin needing only to manage the gap to bring the McLaren GT3 EVO home for Garage 59’s first WEC victory.

“After Imola, everyone has worked so hard to make sure we could bounce back quickly. The pit stops were perfect; the drivers did a fantastic job – every member of the team was on it today. It has been a challenging week leading up to today as we have had a few issues with the car, so this win is a great reward for all of that work. I also want to mention Benji’s final stint – that was the best driving I have ever seen from him!” added Andrew Kirkaldy, Team Principal, Garage 59.

The sister car had to overcome track-limits penalties in the opening hours, but once they had been served, Finn Gehrsitz and Benji Goethe delivered an excellent recovery drive, climbing from 15th to finish fifth and securing a valuable haul of championship points.

“I want to credit my team mates who did an outstanding job, especially to keep us away from penalties, which was a big deciding factor is getting us up to the front. About 15-20 minutes into my stint the team told me that the lead Ferrari had received a penalty for an unsafe release so that meant I had to stay within five seconds of the Ferrari but also make sure nobody passed me. We could only dream of bouncing back this quickly after Imola so this win feels great and the team very much deserves it,” concluded Marvin Kirchhöfer, Driver #10 McLaren GT3 EVO.

ROBUST UK APPOINTS HEAD OF PRODUCT AND COMPLIANCE

Robust UK, a leading manufacturer of steel door solutions, has appointed Rob Mottram as Head of Product and Compliance to support growth and innovation across its range.

Rob brings over 10 years of industry experience and has previously worked as Technical Manager for the ARRONE range at HOPPE (UK), where he gained in-depth knowledge of door hardware and testing and certification processes that underpin product performance and compliance.

Having previously worked at Robust UK as a Design Engineer, Production Supervisor and Research and Development Manager, Rob returns to drive product innovation and strengthen compliance.

Accurate Installation and Fire Door Compliance

Karen Trigg of Allegion UK explores the critical relationship between hardware installation and fire door compliance and why competence remains essential in ensuring lives aren’t put at risk.

Functional fire doors are a cornerstone of passive fire protection and are recognised as a legal requirement in non-domestic properties and houses in multiple occupation (HMOs). For a building to be considered fire safe, its fire doors must be operational, and as such, careful attention is frequently placed on standardised testing, specification and ongoing maintenance.

Perhaps less understood is the link between accurate door hardware installation and fire safety compliance, explains Karen Trigg of Allegion UK: “Certified fire doors are tested with - and are reliant on - a range of hardware components, including hinges, locks, latches and door closers. Whilst ironmongery products must be CE or UKCA marked, Certifire accredited and tested under separate standards, there is less regulatory emphasis placed on the installation process.

“Should hardware be improperly or inaccurately fitted to a door, its fire resistant capabilities become compromised, leaving a building and its occupants at risk. Yet, installation remains a pain point for the fire safety industry. Evidence suggests that incorrect installation is one of the leading causes of fire door failure, and despite a wave of regulatory framework updates in other areas, there remains a level of ambiguity towards the proficiency required for fitting fire door hardware.

“As per the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022: fire door guidance, it is assumed that responsible persons must possess evidence that the design, specification and installation of a fire door is adequate for its location. The guidance also states that upon inspection, if there is any doubt that a fire-resistant flat entrance door has been replaced, the resident may be asked to confirm that the new fire door has been ‘installed by a competent person’.

“It’s clear then that fire door installation is significant to fire door performance and a critical aspect of our built environment. Yet, there remains no legal requirement for installers to possess a mandatory qualification or accreditation when performing installation. This presents a misconception that fire doors and their hardware can be installed by anyone - after all, how is ‘competence’ defined? In reality, duty holders are risking compliance, with unskilled individuals using incorrect fixing methods and stripping certified fire doors of their FD rating in the process.”

Reducing the gaps

The introduction and ongoing implementation of phase 3 of the Building Safety Act 2022 has strengthened the ability of enforcement authorities to act against non-compliance. With greater emphasis placed on meeting standards throughout the lifecycle of fire doors, responsible persons are urged to seek trusted, professional help when unsure about hardware installation. Karen expands:

“Duty holders should seek professional support when installing fire door hardware, in the same way they would rely on qualified persons to assess and install a gas boiler for example. Certified professionals can demonstrate the right skills, knowledge and experience when installing fire door systems, effectively removing any questions surrounding competence and compliance.

“During installation, it is also best practice to follow manufacturer guidelines and fitting instructions. Door hardware products are often unique to the manufacturer, with distinctive components, fittings and fixing points, and as a result should never be approached as like for like installation projects. Fire door integrity is frequently compromised by alignment issues and improper installation methods as a result of this knowledge gap.

“In many cases, an appropriately specified and perfectly operational fire door closer can be found ineffective, solely as a result of poor installation. Consequently, a fire door may not be able to latch or close fully from its standing position, leaving gaps large enough for smoke and fire to pass through in an emergency situation. It’s important to plan ahead and appreciate that door hardware installation is a specialised task.

“To improve the accuracy of installations, there’s a wealth of information and detailed walkthroughs made available from conscious manufacturers in the form of fitting templates, product datasheets and video guides. Guidance can usually be found online, with product packaging, or can be requested directly and is designed to support installers throughout a project whilst reducing installation time and enhancing the life of the installed hardware. Product information and installation guidance can also be useful post-installation. Where a responsible person is required to perform ongoing checks and regular maintenance periods as part of their obligations, some fixing instruction may assist in scenarios when hardware adjustments are required.

“Fire door hardware installation is neither the first nor final step of fire door safety, but it is a fundamental one. As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, we’re seeing a cultural shift in fire safety accountability, and responsible persons would be remiss to undervalue the significance of accurate hardware installation. Ultimately, when it comes to fire door safety compliance, a combination of competence and education is essential.”

Entrance Systems Alliance launches Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction)

Entrance Systems Alliance (ESA) formed by two well-known and established trade organisations, the Automatic Doors Suppliers Association (ADSA) and the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), has announced the launch of a new Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision (Construction). It is designed to support the development of skilled supervisors across the construction sector.

The qualification is a workplace-based programme that enables learners to demonstrate their competence in a real construction environment. Built around National Occupational Standards, it assesses practical ability through evidence gathered on site, rather than through classroom-based examinations.

Learners complete a structured portfolio of evidence, supported and assessed by a qualified assessor, with the qualification graded on a pass or fail basis. Candidates must be employed in a relevant role, ensuring that assessment reflects genuine workplace responsibilities. The course is aimed at individuals currently working in construction who are supervising teams or preparing to move into supervisory positions. It is also suitable for those with existing industry experience, or those who have already achieved a Level 2 qualification or equivalent occupational competence.

To achieve the diploma, learners must successfully complete the six mandatory units and two optional units from a selection of four, covering the core responsibilities expected of a construction supervisor. These include monitoring progress against work schedules, maintaining health, safety and environmental standards, co-ordinating work operations, confirming work activities and resources, and developing effective working relationships on site.

Optional units enable learners to tailor the qualification to their role, with areas such as team performance, quality standards, dimensional control, and the use of plant and equipment.

The qualification has been developed to reflect the realities of modern construction sites, ensuring that learners gain relevant, practical skills that can be applied immediately in their roles. It also provides a clear pathway for progression into more senior supervisory or management positions.

“Our Work with the CITB super sector groups has highlighted the need for a route to professional competence; this level 3 qualification offers an opportunity for supervisors in the door, gate and shutter systems industry to demonstrate their competence and gives them a clearly defined pathway towards future management positions”, says Ken Price, Managing Director at ADSA. “We are delighted to be working with NOCN to be offering this qualification."

From an employer perspective, the qualification offers a structured way to support workforce development and confirm the capability of supervisory staff. By aligning with recognised standards, it provides assurance that individuals are operating at the expected level within their role.

EasyAXS delivers a seamless end-to-end solution for installers, simplifying installation and setup, with comprehensive after-sales support.
