University of Sussex (Campus Life)

One of the most fabulous year of my life, I spent in Brighton, United Kingdom. It came with the responsibility to attended a Post Graduate Program in the University of Sussex from September 2016 to August 2017. It was 33A, Park Village, a family residence, my sweet home. My memorable times ran away so fast through participating in the Cricket training on every weekend in the indoor sports complex, studying in the central library, roaming in Bramber house Cooperative, Coffee Shop, student union, family room of Norwich house, East slope bar, Park village study room, York House reading room and obviously by walking in the National Park (Stanmer Park) surrounding the university campus. Now this is just one year of coming back to my home country, but whenever I think about those time, I become nostalgic and emotional. Still I can smell that fresh nature of Sussex, feel the shivering cold and gust of the winter, gentle wind of the summer evenings, softness of the green grasses of the campus. The most simple expression of my heart is, I love Sussex very much.

প্লাজা-পিয়াজ্জা'র দেশে; পর্ব-৭ (রোম)

রোম শহরের এক প্রান্তে ভিলা বর্গিস নামের বিশাল এক বাগান রয়েছে। এর মধ্যে বাচ্চাদের জন্যে চিড়িয়াখানা, বিভিন্ন রাইড, মিউসিয়াম, লেক ছাড়াও সময় কাটানোর অনেক ব্যবস্থা রয়েছে। সারাদিন এখানে কাটিয়ে পাহাড়ি ঢাল বেয়ে নিচে নামলেই পাওয়া যায় পিয়াজ্জা স্প্যাগনা। সন্ধ্যায় সময় কাটানোর জন্যে এক অপূর্ব ব্যবস্থা।

রোমের সবচেয়ে উল্লেখযোগ্য দর্শনীয় স্থানগুলো হলো- কলোসিয়াম, পিয়াজ্জা ভেনেজিয়া, ক্যাপিটলিনে মিউসিয়াম, ত্রেভি ফাউন্টেন, পিয়াজ্জা নাভোনা, পিয়াজ্জা পোপোলসহ আরো অনেক জায়গা। কলোসিয়াম, পিয়াজ্জা ভেনেজিয়া, ক্যাপিটলিনে মিউসিয়াম এই তিনটার জন্যে একটু বেশি সময় রাখতেই হবে।

স্থানীয় ইতালিয়ান খাবার খেয়ে দেখতে চাইলে চলে যেতে হবে টিবের নদীর পশ্চিম পাড়ে ত্রেস্টভরে এলাকায়। জায়গাটা রোমের পুরাতন এলাকা নামে পরিচিত। টিবের নদীটার তেমন কোনো বিশেষত্ব চোখে পড়লো না। বাংলাদেশের একটা খালের মতো, কিন্তু নদীর দুই ধার বাঁধিয়ে আর আলোকসজ্জা করে এটাকেও ওরা চরম নান্দনিক একটা পর্যটন আকর্ষনে রূপ দিয়েছে।

রোম শহরের কেন্দ্র বিন্দু বলা যাই টার্মিনি স্টেশনটাকে। এখানে প্রচুর দোকানে বাংলাদেশী দেখতে পাওয়া যাবে। বাঙালি খাবারের দোকানও আছে। রোমে একাধারে মেট্রো রেল, সিটি বাস এবং ট্রাম সার্ভিস রয়েছে। যারা কলকাতায় গিয়েছেন তারা তো ট্রামের সাথে পূর্ব পরিচিত। ইতালির মতো মাটির নিচ দিয়ে মেট্রো রেল আর উপর দিয়ে ট্রাম সার্ভিস দুটো একই সাথে বিদ্যমান এমন শহর মনে হয় খুব বেশি নেই। রোম শহর দেখে সহজেই অন্যান্য ইউরোপিয়ানদের থেকে এটাকে পৃথক করা যায়। ইউকে আর স্পেনে ওদের রাস্তা ঘাট যেমন ঝকঝকে, ফুটপাথ গুলো প্রশস্ত ছিল, এখানে তেমন না। রাস্তা গুলো অনেক সরু, অনেক জায়গাতে ফুটপাথ নেই। হয়তো জনসংখ্যা এই শহরে বেশি হওয়াতে এবং প্রাচীন স্থাপনাগুলোর কারনে রাস্তা প্রশস্ত করতে পারেনি। তাই বলে ওরা বসে থাকে নি। পর্যটন আকর্ষণের জন্যে যা করার তার সবই করেছে।

ভুমধ্য সাগরের উত্তর এবং পশ্চিম তীরে উড়োজাহাজে প্রায় ৪৩০০ কিঃ মিঃ, ট্রেনে ৭০০ কিঃ মিঃ এবং বাসে প্রায় ২০০ কিঃ মিঃ ঘুরে ফেললাম। ঘুরতে ঘুরতে প্রায়ই নিজের দেশের সাথে তুলনা চলে আসছিলো। এখন লিখতে গিয়েও তা আরো অবধারিত ভাবে এলো। সমৃদ্ধ ইতিহাস, ঐতিহ্য, সুযোগ থাকার পরেও আমরা এখনো পারিনি। ইউরোপের মানুষের কাছে আমাদের পার্শ্ববর্তী থাইল্যান্ড এখন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পর্যটন আকর্ষণ। তাই বলে বলছিনা যে আমাদের থাইল্যান্ডকে অনুসরণ করা উচিত। আমাদেরটাতো আমাদের মতোই হওয়া উচিত। অন্যদের যা আছে আমাদের তা নেই আর আমাদের যা আছে অন্যদের তা নেই। আমাদের ভৌগোলিক এবং ঐতিহাসিক ভিত্তি অবজ্ঞা করে কিছু করতে গেলে তা শুধু উন্নয়নের নামে অনুসরণ করাই হবে, যেটাকে কোনো ভাবেই টেকসই উন্নয়ন বলা যায় না। নদীমাত্রিকতা আর সংস্কৃতিক বৈচিত্র্য এই দুটো বিষয়কে প্রাধান্য দিয়ে আমরাও একটা ঈর্ষণীয় পর্যটন ব্যবস্থা গড়ে তুলতে পারি। তবে খেয়াল রাখতে হবে নান্দনিকতা আর সার্বজনীনতা এই দুটো বিষয়ে যেন কোন ছাড় না দেয়া হয়। আমার কাছে মনে হয়েছে পর্যটনের মূল উপাদান এদুটোই।

স্পেন ভ্রমণে মনে হয়েছে, স্পানিয়ার্ডরা আসলে একটু নাক উঁচু জাত। ইংরেজি ব্যাবহারে অনীহা, ভিনদেশি দেখে তাদের কাছ থেকে নিজেদেরকে দূরে রাখার চেষ্টা, সবকিছুতেই একটা দেমাগী ভাব আছে। অবশ্য থাকারই কথা। পৃথিবীর চার ভাগের এক ভাগ তো বলা যাই ওদেরই কলোনী ছিল। এজন্যেই বোধয় এখনো নিজেদেরকে কিছুটা উচ্চমার্গীয় ভাবে। ইতালিতে গিয়ে পরিস্থিতি দেখলাম অন্যরকম। ইতালিয়ানরা বিশেষ করে রোমের কথাই বলবো ওরা বেশ সহজ এবং মিশুক। রোমের রাস্তা ঘাটে হাঁটতে গিয়ে টের পেলাম প্রচুর বাংলাদেশী ফেরিওয়ালা রয়েছে ওখানে। তারা সেলফি স্টিক, ব্যাটারি, পাওয়ার ব্যাংক বিক্রি করছে। কয়েক জনের সাথে কথা বলার চেষ্টা করলাম। বাংলাদেশী জেনে কথা বললো, কিন্তু মনে হলো তথ্য গোপন করতে চায়। আন্দাজ করলাম এখানে রাস্তায় ফেরি করে জিনিস বিক্রি করছে এইটা একজন বাঙালি দেখে ফেলাতে কিছুটা লজ্জা পেয়েছে। হয়তো দেশে কোনো অবস্থা সম্পন্ন ঘরের সন্তান। একজন জানালো সে এর আগে আরব আমিরাতে ৮ বছর ছিল এবং ৩ বছর হলো ইতালিতে এসেছে। আরব আমিরাতে নাকি অনেক কষ্ট করতো, এখানে তাও ভালো আছে। যাই হোক রোমের জন্যে বরাদ্দ ছিল ৫ দিন ৬ রাত। শেষের দিন মনে হলো এর থেকে কম বরাদ্দ রাখলে আফসোস নিয়ে ফিরতে হতো। পুরো রোম শহরটাই মনে হলো প্রাচীন স্থাপনার মধ্যে থেকে জেগে উঠেছে। এখনো অনেক জায়গাতে খোঁড়াখুঁড়ি চলছে।

একদিন সারাদিন বরাদ্দ রেখেছিলাম ভ্যাটিকান সিটির জন্যে। ভ্যাটিকান সিটির মিউসিয়াম, সিস্টিন চ্যাপেল আর সেইন্ট পিটার্স ব্যাসিলিকা (পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড়ো চার্চ) দেখতে পুরো একদিন লাগে। ভ্যাটিকান সিটি নামের পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে ছোট এই রাষ্ট্রটি চারিদিকদিয়ে রোম শহর দ্বারা বেষ্টিত। ১৯২৯ সালে পোপের সাথে এক সমঝোতায় ইতালি সরকার ১১০ একরের এই জায়গা আলাদা রাষ্ট্র হিসেবে ছেড়ে দেয়। পুরো রোমে শহর জুড়ে ভ্যাটিকানেরটাসহ ৫ টি বাসিলিকা রয়েছে। বাসিলিকা গুলো মূলত চার্চ এবং এগুলোর মধ্যে মিউসিয়ামও আছে। প্রত্যেকটাই নিজস্ব বৈশিষ্ট আর ইতিহাসে সমৃদ্ধ।

বার্সেলোনাতে এসে মনে হলো এটা অনেক ক্ষেত্রে স্পেনের রাজধানী মাদ্রিদের থেকেও উন্নত। আমরা ছিলাম প্লাজা কাতালুনিয়ার খুব কাছে। হোটেলটার নাম পেনশন এরিস। প্লাজা কাতালুনিয়াকে বার্সেলোনার একটা কেন্দ্র বিন্দু বলা যায়। এখান থেকে মেট্রো রেল এবং বাসের রুট খুব সহজে ব্যবহার করা যায়। বার্সেলোনাতে আমাদের সময়টা একটু কম বরাদ্দ থাকাতে বার্সেলোনার সমুদ্র সৈকত, মঞ্জুইক কাসল, গোথিক কোয়ার্টার, আর্ক্ দে ট্রিওমফ এই কয়েকটা জায়গা ঘুরেই আমরা রোম, ইতালির পথে রওনা দেই। মঞ্জুইক কাসলের উপর থেকে ভুমধ্য সাগরের তীরবর্তী বার্সেলোনার সমুদ্র বন্দরটা পাখির দৃষ্টিতে দেখে নেয়া যায়। মঞ্জুইক কাসলটাই একটা উঁচু পাহাড়ের উপর। এখন থেকে ক্যাবল কার ব্যবহার করে পাহাড়টার পাদদেশে চলে যাওয়া যায়। প্রায় ৬-৮ মিনিটের ক্যাবল কার রাইডে জন প্রতি খরচ পড়েছিল ৬ ইউরো। বার্সেলোনাতে মোটামুটি সব ধর্ম-বর্ণের মানুষ পাওয়া যাবে বলে মনে হয়েছে।

সমুদ্র সৈকতে এক ফেরিওয়ালা জোর করেই নারকেলের শাস খাওয়ালো। তার শারীরিক গড়ন আর চামড়ার রং দেখে জানতে চাইলাম কোথা থেকে এসেছে? জানালো সে পাকিস্তানের। একটা নারকেলের শাসের ৫ ভাগের ২ ভাগ খাইয়ে সে দাম ধার্য করলো ৩ ইউরো, মানে প্রায় ৩০০ টাকা।

সেভিল থেকে আমাদের পরের গন্তব্য ছিল গ্রানাডা। প্রথমে ট্রেন পরে বাসে চড়ে চলে গেলাম গ্রানাডাতে। যাওয়ার পথের দৃশ্য অসাধারণ। এই পথটার দুই ধারে পাহাড়। পাহাড়ের উপত্যাকায় মানুষের বসতি। এই পথে যেতে যেতেই বোঝা যায় কেন স্পেন কে ইউরোপের সবচেয়ে বৈচিত্র পূর্ণ দেশ বলা হয়। গ্রানাডার মূল আকর্ষণ হলো আলহামরার নাসরিদ প্যালেস। গ্রানাডার মূল শহরেরই এক প্রান্তে আলহামরা অবস্থিত। এখানে আসার আগে অনলাইনে আলহামরার টিকেট করে নেয়াই ভালো। সরাসরি এসে টিকেট করতে গেলে না পাওয়ার সম্ভাবনাই বেশি। স্পেনের যে কয়টা শহরে গেয়েছি তার মধ্যে গ্রানাডাকে পছন্দের তালিকায় এক নম্বরে রাখবো আমি। শহরে পরিমিত মানুষের চলাচল, খাবারের বৈচিত্র এখানে অনেক বেশি। আমরা ছিলাম শহরের মোটামুটি প্রাণ কেন্দ্রেই হোস্টেল ভেরোনিকাতে। আলহামরা General life এর অনলাইন টিকেট আগেই করা ছিল, বিকালে কোরাল ডেল কার্বন নামের একটা ভবন থেকে পরের দিনের আলহামরা ভ্রমণের টিকেটের হার্ড কপি নিলাম। এখানে ক্যাথেড্রাল দে গ্রানাডা এবং প্লাজা ইসাবেল লা কাটলিকে কিছু সময় কাটানো যায়। এলাকাটা ঘুরতে ঘুরতে চলে এলাম Alcaiceria নামের একটা মার্কেটে। মার্কেটে কয়েকটা দোকানির সাথে আলাপে বুঝলাম এরা বেশির ভাগই মরোক্কোর অধিবাসী। এদের দোকান গুলো খুবই রঙবেরঙের। পণ্যগুলোও বেশ চটকদার, দেখলেই কিনতে ইচ্ছা করবে। রাতে খাবার রেস্টুরেন্ট খুঁজতে গিয়েও সেই মোরোক্কানদের পাল্লাতেই পড়লাম। রেস্টুরেন্ট টার নাম রাহমা। অসাধারণ সাজসজ্জা, মনে হচ্ছিলো যেন আরব্য রাজনীর কোনো গল্পের মধ্যে আছি। স্পেনে আসার পর থেকে এখানেই প্রথম পেট ভরে খেলাম। মোরোক্কান খাবারের স্বাদ চমৎকার, ওরা আমাদের মতোই মসলা ব্যাবহার করে।

গ্রানাডাতে মরোক্কোর ব্যাবসায়ীদের এতো আধিক্য দেখে নেটে সার্চ দিলাম। গ্রানাডা প্রদেশটা ভুমধ্য সাগরের তীরবর্তী অঞ্চল, জিব্রালটার প্রণালী একে মরক্কো থেকে পৃথক করে রেখেছে। আর আলহামরা, নাসরিদ প্যালেস এগুলো মরক্কো থেকে আগত মোহাম্মদ ইবনে নাসির প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছেন। গ্রনাডাতে মুসলিম শাসনের সমাপ্তি হয় ১৪৯২ সালে। আলহামরা হলো গ্রানাডা শহরের মধ্যে আর একটা শহর। এটা পুরো ঘুরে দেখতে হলে একদিন সময় হাতে রাখতে হবে। হাতে সময় অল্প থাকলে শুধু নাসরিদ প্যালেস দেখা যেতে পারে।

গ্রানাডা পর্ব শেষ করে এবার রওনা করলাম বার্সেলোনার উদ্দেশে। ট্রেনে করে যেতে গেলে খরচ বেশি হতো তাই আকাশ পথ বেছে নিলাম। প্রথমে বাসে করে গেলাম মালাগা। এরপর মালাগা এয়ারপোর্ট থেকে বার্সেলোনা। মালাগা হলো স্পেন তথা বলা যায় ইউরোপের শেষ প্রান্ত। এরপর জিব্রালটার প্রণালী এবং মরক্কো। অবশ্য ম্যাপে মরোক্কোর সামান্য কিছু অংশ ইউরোপের মধ্যে দেখানো হয়েছে কিন্তু ভৌগোলিক ভাবে আফ্রিকাকে ইউরোপ থেকে বিভক্ত করেছে এই জিব্রালটার প্রণালী আর ভুমধ্য সাগর। জিব্রালটার প্রণালীটা হলো অতলান্তিক মহাসাগরের সাথে ভুমধ্য সাগরের সংযোগ স্থল।

১৫ জানুয়ারি খুব ভোর বেলা আমরা রেনফে রেল- এ করে মাদ্রিদ থেকে সেভিলে রওনা করি। সম্ভবত আড়াই থেকে তিন ঘন্টা লেগেছিলো। স্পেনে যে ট্রেন গুলো এক শহর থেকে আরেক শহরে চলাচল করে এগুলো রেনফের অধীনে। সেভিল খুব শান্ত, পরিপাটি একটা শহর। শহরটার মধ্যে দিয়ে বয়ে গেছে গুয়াদালকুভির নদী। আমরা ছিলাম হোস্টল জেনটফটে। এই হোটেলটা একেবারে নদীর ধারেই। সেভিল অষ্টম শতক থেকে ত্রয়োদশ শতক পর্যন্ত মুসলিম শাসকদের অধীনে ছিল। এখানকার পর্যটনের মূল আকর্ষণ আলকাজার প্যালেস এবং জিরালডা টাওয়ার মুসলিম শাসন আমলেই তৈরী। সেভিল ক্যাথেড্রাল এর মধ্যে দিয়ে ঢুকে জিরালডা টাওয়ারে ওঠা যায়। টাওয়ারটার উচ্চতা প্রায় ৩৪২ ফুট। পুরোটা পায়ে হেঁটেই উঠতে হয়, তবে হুইল চেয়ার ঠেলে নেবার ব্যবস্থা আছে। টাওয়াররের মাথা থেকে সেভিল শহরের পুরোটা দেখে নেয়া যায়। আর সেভিল ক্যাথেড্রাল টা হলো পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড়ো গোথিক ক্যাথেড্রাল। সেভিলে আসলে যেটা কোনো ভাবেই বাদ দেয়া যাবে না তা হলো আলকাজার প্যালেস। এর বাগান আর স্থাপনা গুলো ভালো ভাবে ঘুরে দেখতে ৩-৪ ঘন্টা সময় লেগে যায়।

সেভিল এর রাস্তা গুলোর দুই ধার দিয়ে সারি সারি কামলা লেবুর গাছ আর তাতে ঝুলে আছে বড়ো বড়ো কমলা। কেউ ছিড়ে খাচ্ছে না দেখে অবাক লাগে। আলকাজার প্যালেসের মধ্যে থেকে একটা কমলা ছিড়ে বোঝা গেলো গাছের কমলা গাছেই থেকে যাওয়ার মূল রহস্য। এতটাই টক যে পাখিও খায়না। সন্ধ্যার পর সময় কাটানোর মতো জায়গা হলো প্লাজা দে এস্পানা। এছাড়া সেভিল ফ্লামেনকো শো এর জন্যেও বিখ্যাত। ফ্লামেনকো শো গুলো মূলত সন্ধ্যার পরেই হয়ে থাকে। কিন্তু ৬ বছরের নিচের বাচ্চাদের ঢোকার অনুমতি নেই। তাই ছোট বাচ্চা সাথে থাকলে এই চিন্তা বাদ দিতে হবে। কেউ যদি ষাঁড়ের লড়াই দেখতে চান তবে অবশ্যই এপ্রিল থেকে অক্টোবরের মধ্যে যেতে হবে।

১২ জানুয়ারী দিবাগত রাতে স্পেনের রাজধানী মাদ্রিদে পৌঁছে আগে থেকে বুকিং দেয়া হোস্টেল কাসানোভাতে উঠি। রাতের বেলা এক বুড়ো থুরথুরে দাদু হোটেলের গেট খুলে দিলেন। তিনি ইংরেজির ই-ও বোঝেন না। আমার নাম বলাতে বুকিং কাগজ দেখে আমাদের রুম দেখিয়ে দিলেন আর দরজা খোলা এবং লক করার পদ্ধতি শিখিয়ে দিলেন। সবই হলো ইশারায়। গভীর রাতে প্রয়োজন-অপ্রয়োজন কোনো কথা বলতে না পেরে একটু মুশরেই পড়েছিলাম কিন্তু সকালে যখন হোটেল থেকে বাইরে বের হলাম উজ্জ্ব্ল রোদ আর তাপ পেয়ে মনটা ভালো হয়ে গেলো। ইউকে তে বছরের এই সময়ে রোদ্দুর তো দূরের কথা মেঘমুক্ত আকাশ দেখতে পাওয়া ভাগ্যের ব্যাপার। যাই হোক, প্রথমে গেলাম প্রাডো মিউসিয়ামে। মাদ্রিদে গিয়ে থাকলে, যারা চিত্র কর্ম ভালোবাসেন না তাদেরও উচিত একবার এখানে আসা। মিউসিয়ামটা চিত্র কর্ম আর ভাস্কর্যে ঠাসা। বেশির ভাগ চিত্র কর্ম ৩০০-৫০০ বছর পুরাতন। কেমন ছিল ১৫ শতকের সেই সময়ের শিশুদের জীবন, তাদের যুদ্ধ পরিচালনা, সমাজ ব্যবস্থা, এসব তৎকালীন শিল্পীরা একে রেখে গেছেন। চিত্র কর্ম দেখতে গিয়ে আবিষ্কার করলাম স্পেনের সমাজ ব্যাবস্থায় একটু স্থূল আকৃতির নারীরাই ছিল বোধয় সৌন্দর্যের প্রতিক (অবশ্য একেবারেই আমার ব্যাক্তিগত ধারণা)। প্রায় আড়াইদিনের মাদ্রিদ ভ্রমণে গেলাম রেটিরও পার্কে, মাদ্রিদ প্যালেস, দেবত মন্দির, প্লাজা মেয়র, প্লাজা পুয়ের্তো ডেল সল, সান মাগুইল মার্কেট। প্লাজা পুয়ের্তো ডেল সল নাকি সমগ্র স্পেন এর কেন্দ্র বিন্দু। গভীর রাত পর্যন্ত এখানে মানুষের ভিড় লেগেই থাকে। এর কাছের একটা kfc তে প্রথমদিন সন্ধ্যায় এক বাঙালি পরিবারের সাথে পরিচয় হলো, তাদের কাছ থেকে বাঙালি খাবার হোটেলের ঠিকানা নেই। পরদিন রাতে ওই ঠিকানা খোঁজ করে গেলাম। জায়গাটার নাম লাভাপিয়েস। এলাকাটা মাদ্রিদের বাঙালি পাড়া নামেই পরিচিত। মাকসুদ নামের এক বাংলাদেশী ব্যাবসায়ী ভাই বাংলা হোটেল চিনিয়ে দিলেন। মাদ্রিদের পাবলিক ট্রান্সপোর্ট ব্যবস্থা বেশ ভালো। অল্প খরচে ঘুরে বেড়াবার জন্যে মেট্রো রেলই সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট ব্যবস্থা মনে হয়েছে। তবে চিন্তার বিষয় হলো কেউ ইংরেজি বলে না। অবশ্য এদের পাবলিক প্লেসে তথ্য গুলো চিহ্ন দেখে সহজেই বুঝতে পারা যায়। স্থানীয় খাবার চেখে দেখাটা ভ্রমণের একটা অংশ। এইরকম আগ্রহ থাকলে সান মাগুইল মার্কেটে যাওয়া যেতে পারে। হরেক রকমের খাবার এখানে পাওয়া যায়। মাদ্রিদের আরেকটা বিখ্যাত খাবার হলো চুড়ো চকলেট। এক কাপ চকলেট এর মধ্যে চুড়ো ডুবিয়ে খাওয়া। পুয়ের্তো ডেল সল এর কাছাকাছি Chocolatería San Ginés দোকানটা চুড়ো চকলেট এর জন্য বিখ্যাত। এটা ২৪ ঘন্টা খোলা থাকে।

[জানুয়ারির মাঝামাঝি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শীতকালীন ছুটিতে ১৩ দিনের সফরে গিয়েছিলাম স্পেনের ৪টি শহর (মাদ্রিদ, সেভিল, গ্রানাডা, বার্সেলোনা) এবং ইতালির রাজধানী রোম। যখন ভ্রমণে ছিলাম তখন প্রতিনিয়ত অনুভব করছিলাম ভ্রমণের বিবরণী লেখার। কেননা প্রতিদিন এতো নতুন নতুন জায়গা দেখছিলাম আর অভিজ্ঞতার সম্মুখীন হচ্ছিলাম যে পরের দিনই আগেরটা বিস্মৃত হয়ে যাচ্ছিল। মাঝে মধ্যে ভুলে যাচ্ছিলাম গতকাল কোথায় খেয়েছি, কোথায় গিয়েছি, এটা বা ওটা কোন শহরে ছিল! কিন্তু সময়ের সল্পতা আর নতুনকে দেখার আতিশয্যে তাৎক্ষণিক অভিজ্ঞতাগুলো লেখা হয়নি। তারপরও স্মৃতি হাতড়ে, টিকেট, ভাউচার আর ছবি দেখে এই বর্ণনাটা ভার্চুয়াল জগতের স্মৃতিতে জমা দিলাম। এই প্রত্যাশায় যে, ভার্চুয়াল মাধ্যমের স্থায়িত্ব কাগজের আর মস্তিষ্কের জীবনী থেকে বেশি হবে।]

ব্রিটেনে একটু লম্বা সময়ের জন্য এলে ইউরোপ দেখে যাওয়ার ইচ্ছা খুব কম মানুষই দমাতে পারে। এর একটা বড় কারণ হলো ইউকে থেকে ইউরোপিয়ান ইউনিয়নভুক্ত দেশগুলোর জন্য শেনজেন ভিসা পাওয়া যেমন সহজ তেমনি এখান থেকে খুব কম খরচে আর পরিশ্রমে বৈচিত্রপূর্ণ এক মহাদেশ ভ্রমণের অভিজ্ঞতা অৰ্জন। বাংলাদেশ থেকে ইউরোপের কোনো দেশে আসতে যে পরিমান অর্থ, সময় আর পরিশ্রম ব্যায় করতে হবে তার সিকি ভাগ দিয়েই ইউরোপ ভ্রমণের এই সুযোগ তাই কেউ ছাড়তে চায় না। এসব হিসাব-নিকাশ তো ছিলই, তার উপর আমার স্বভাবটাও এডভেঞ্চারমুখী। নিজ দেশের ৬৪ টি জেলার মধ্যে ৫৩ টি জেলাতে ইতোমধ্যেই আমি গিয়েছি। গিয়েছি মানে বাসে বা ট্রেনে করে অতিক্রম করেছি তা না, অন্তত একটা রাত কাটিয়েছি। বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রেই নিজের পয়সাতে নয়। আমার চাকরিদাতা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো আমাকে এই দুর্লভ সুযোগ করে দিয়েছে। এক্ষেত্রে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা পালন করেছে বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্র। যাক সেসব কথা, ইউরোপ ভ্রমণের বিষয়ে আসি। ইচ্ছা আর সহজ সুযোগ থাকলেই তো আর সব হয় না। অর্থের যোগান থাকতে হয়। এখানে ঘুরে ফিরে দেখার জন্যে কোনো চাকরিদাতা আমাকে স্পনসর করবে না, তাই নিজের জমানো যা ছিল সেটাই সম্বল। তাই আপাতত ইউরোপ ভ্রমণের চিন্তার ফ্রেমটা ছোট করে স্পেন আর ইতালি ভ্রমণে নিবিষ্ট করলাম। এর কারণ দাঁড় করাতে গিয়ে দেখলাম এই দুই দেশের একটি হলো ভৌগোলিক, সাংস্কৃতিক দিক বিবেচনায় ইউরোপের সবচেয়ে বৈচিত্রপূর্ণ দেশ, আরেকটি হলো ইউরোপিও সভ্যতার আদিভূমি (নিজেকে কিছুটা সান্তনা দেবার জন্যে)।

মনে যখন ইচ্ছা চেপে বসেছে তখন তো আর ফেরার উপায় নেই । ধীরে ধীরে প্রস্তুতি নিতে লাগলাম। বিভিন্ন এজেন্সির মাধ্যমে ভ্রমণ পরিকল্পনা করা যায়, কিন্তু তাতে নিজের ইচ্ছা মতো সবকিছু হয় না, আর খরচও যায় বেড়ে। আবার দেখলাম শীতকালে ভ্রমণে গেলে সাধারণ সময়ের চেয়ে খরচ প্রায় ৩-৪ গুণ কমানো সম্ভব। শীতকালে ইউরোপের দেশগুলোতে বিমানের ভাড়া, হোটেল বুকিং সবকিছুতেই খরচ কম। অপরদিকে শীতের সময় ইউকেতে তাপমাত্রা (-৭) থেকে (+৩) এর মধ্যে উঠানামা করলেও স্পেন এবং ইতালির ভৌগোলিক অবস্থানগত কারণে সেখানে তাপমাত্রা (+৫) থেকে (+১৩) এর মধ্যে থাকে, যা আমাদের বাঙালিদের জন্যে অনেকটা সহনীয় পর্যায়ে।

যেহেতু আমি কোনো এজেন্সির সহায়তা নেই নি, তাই ভিসার জন্য আবেদন করতে গিয়ে বেশ কিছু বিষয় হাতে-কলমে জানতে পারলাম। এধরণের ব্যক্তিগত পরিকল্পনা করতে গেলে এই তথ্য গুলো অনেকের কাজে লাগতে পারে। ইউরোপিয়ান ইউনিয়নের অন্তর্ভুক্ত দেশগুলোতে ঘুরতে গেলে শেনজেন ভিসা লাগে এটা তো সবারই জানা। কিন্তু ভিসার জন্যে আবেদন করতে হয় সেই দেশের এম্বাসিতে যেখানে ভ্রমণকালীন সবচেয়ে বেশি সময় অবস্থান করা হবে। আর যদি ভ্রমণ পরিকল্পনা এমন হয় যে, কোনো দুটি বা তিনটি দেশে সমান দিন অতিবাহিত হবে তাহলে ওই দেশগুলোর মধ্যে যে দেশে প্রথম প্রবেশের পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে সে দেশের এম্বাসি থেকে ভিসা নিতে হবে। একটা উদাহরণ দিয়ে বিষয়টা পরিষ্কার করছি। যদি কেউ ফ্রান্স, স্পেন, ইতালি, জার্মানি ৪ টি দেশে যেতে চায় এবং পরিকল্পনা থাকে ইতালিতে বেশি সময় অবস্থান করবে তাহলে ভিসা নিতে হবে ইতালি এম্বাসি থেকে। আবার যদি এমন হয়, স্পেন দিয়ে প্রবেশ করে স্পেন, ফ্রান্স এই দুটি দেশে সবচেয়ে বেশি সময় এবং সমান সংখ্যক দিন অতিবাহিত করার পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে তাহলে ভিসা নিতে হবে স্পেন এম্বাসি থেকে। আমরা স্পেন এম্বাসির মাধ্যমে আবেদন করেছিলাম। যেসমস্ত কাগজপত্র লেগেছিলো তার তালিকা মোটামুটি এরকম- পাসপোর্ট, বিআরপি (বায়োমেট্রিক রেসিডেন্সিয়াল পার্মিট), ভ্রমণের টিকিটের কপি, হোটেল বুকিং এর কপি, ভ্রমণ ইন্সুরেন্স (প্রত্যেকের জন্য আলাদা, শিশু থাকলে তার জন্যেও আলাদা, ইউকের পোস্ট অফিসের ওয়েবসাইট এর মাধ্যমে অনলাইনে ভ্রমণ ইন্সুরেন্স করে ফেলা যায়। ভ্রমণ পরিকল্পনাতে স্পেন থাকলে খরচ একটু বেশী পরে, জন প্রতি ১৫-২০ পাউন্ড।), ৩ মাসের ব্যাঙ্ক স্টেটমেন্ট (ভিসা আবেদনের পূর্বের সাতদিনের মধ্যে উত্তোলিত হতে হবে), ডিপেন্ডেন্ট থাকলে (স্ত্রীর জন্যে বৈবাহিক সনদ, বাচ্চার জন্যে জন্ম সনদ), বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রত্যয়ন পত্র (যেহেতু আমি ছাত্র। চাকরিজীবী হলে সংশ্লিষ্ট অফিস থেকে প্রত্যয়ন নিতে হবে), সরকারি কর্মচারীদের ক্ষেত্রে লন্ডনে অবস্থিত বাংলাদেশ হাই কমিশন থেকে পরিচিতি পত্র (এটা জরুরি না, কিন্তু নিজের নিরাপত্তার কারণে নিয়ে রাখা ভালো)।

স্পেন এম্বাসি আমাকে ৫ কর্মদিবসের মধ্যেই ভিসা দিয়ে দিলো। অফপিক সময় হওয়াতে মনে হয় সময় কম লেগেছিলো। এবার যাত্রা শুরুর পালা। যাত্রার দিন ব্রাইটন শহরে তুমুল বৃষ্টি, সেইসাথে ঠান্ডা। ট্রেনে করে যখন গ্যাটউইক এয়ারপোর্টে যাচ্ছি তখন দেখতে পেলাম বরফ পড়তে শুরু করেছে। মনে মনে ভাবলাম যাক তাহলে ইউকে থেকে বের হয়ে যাওয়ার জন্যে সঠিক সময়টাই নির্ধারণ করেছি।

Brighton Sea Beach

I often become longing about my stay in Brighton, United Kingdom. I have spent one marvellous year (September 2016 to September 2017) of my life in Brighton. It does not mean that the time was so smooth but I mean, it gave me opportunity to discover some new courses of human life that I never tasted before. Probably, I will write about those experiences and life events time to time. One of the most game changing decision for me in United Kingdom was to buy a bicycle. It gave me enormous chances to travel nearly every corner of the Brighton city. Whenever, I would come in Brighton for grocery and other staffs, I used to visit Brighton pier and marina. This place harnessed so colourfully in summer (June-August). Here is some memory and collection of mine from Brighton Sea beach.

Kutupalong Rohingya Asylum Camp in Bangladesh

I have joined Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Office (RRRC), Cox’s Bazar on 4th of October. From my arrival in the tourist district, I have been visiting the border area near Gundum, Bandarban and Kutupalong, Thankhali Bazar, Shafiullah Kata, tv tower zone of Ukhiya Upazilla, Cox’s Bazar regularly, where the government of Bangladesh has temporarily allocated land for the Rohingya asylum seekers. Already more than 0.7 million Rohingya people have crossed the Myanmar border for seeking asylum in Bangladesh and around 3000 acres of forest land is fully occupied by these Myanmar citizens. Relief distribution work for these oppressed people is jointly performed by District Administration, Cox’s Bazar and Bangladesh Military. Temporary house building materials, Medical facilities, drinking water, sanitation services are rendered by Bangladesh government, UNHCR, WFP, IOM and many other government-nongovernment organizations. But the most incredible contribution is done by the general people of Bangladesh. They have come forward with immense help. Many house structures, adequate foods, clothes, daily essentials are donated by them and these donations have kept the situation under control. Without private assistance, it would be nearly impossible to provide with fundamental needs to these Rohingya people for such a long time.

My attachment in the RRRC office have turned into more rigorous and challenging from 8th of October when I received an office order mentioning that the Rohingya settlement area (3000 acres) need to be divided into 20 blocks and Md. Abul Kalam Azad sir of 24th BCS and I have been given the charge of block-6. The charter of duties, I have been assigned are quite long and most diversified that I ever tackled. We are provided with a print copy of map captured from google maps view, settlement block site numbers are written and pinned in the map. Our responsibility is to physically identify the pinned area of the map. Then an area of approximately 150 acres to be estimated surrounding the pinned spot of the map. This 150 acres of land to be demarcated considering the geographical features like hill, valley, canals (chara) etc. That means, if we consider a hill within our block area then any part of that hill should not be included in another block. Another challenge for the block demarcation is that, we cannot divide a community living in a specific area led by a Majhee (Majhee is a community leader who leads a community of 100-200 families of Rohingyas). Next big challenge is to find out space for connecting roads between adjacent blocks. It is to be mentioned that the area is already thronged with thousands of temporary settlements. Each block will have separate administrative tent, Police Barack, Ansar Camp, School, Community area, Mosque etc. We have to find space for them as well as have to ask assistance and give guidance to the foreign and non-government organizations to set up latrines, tube-wells, schools, medical camps etc. in our block considering the population density, availability of space, avoiding duplicity. Already, a lot of latrines and tube-wells are established by different organizations in the whole 3000 acres of land but there is no coordination among them. Most of the sanitation and medical services are near to the highway of Ukhiya-Teknaf. Because everybody wants to show-off their activities to mass people and donor agencies. Though Rohingya settlement has penetrated very deep into the barren land but many NGOs could not reach to that extent. But there are some exception also. Public health department, IOM have done excellent job. They have penetrated their services to the newer settlement areas far away from highway. Apart from the above mentioned responsibilities, we have to maintain law and order situation of our assigned block. In a nutshell, we have to establish a block/camp to oversee the security, discipline and to coordinate activities to ensure fundamental needs of the Rohingya community. It is like transforming an unplanned densely populated settlement into a planned and accessible settlement.

Now, there is no weekend. We have started our works. Block 6 is approximately 3 km away from road connectivity and Kutupalong registered camp. Our primary success is, we have physically found the pinned zone mentioned in the google map but could not demarcate our boundary of approximately 150 acres yet. We have identified 11 Majhees in our block who are leading 1702 families. The number will increase definitely. There are 17 tube-wells and 32 latrines in our primary assessed areas of block-6. The problem is latrines are becoming full very quickly because the NGOs who set those have provided only one or two rings to deposit the sludge. I have seen lot of flies today in some areas which is an alarming message. I presume, germs of diseases might spread out quickly. Another problem in our block is, no bath place for women. Since, Rohingyas are very conservative Muslim, veiled and shaded bath places for women are much needed establishment. Yesterday’s discussion with department of public health and IOM have seemed to be successful. Our blocks are going to get 5 more tube-wells and 5 latrines from public health department very soon. IOM assured to set some bath places and to provide some roof covers as some new families are suffering due to heavy rain. Among the non-government organizations, IOM seems very dedicated and sustainable in their mood of works. They are providing deep tube-wells which are 800 feet deep and they have established some latrines connected with bio-gas plant. We are searching for a suitable place for setting up a school. BRAC representative will come tomorrow. Some relocations of the settlement might be needed to accommodate brac school in the block.

Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge

This bridge links the mainland of Antrim country of Northern Ireland with a tiny island named Carrickarede in the Atlantic ocean. It is thought that Salmon fishermen built a rope bridge in the same place around 350 years ago to transport their fishes to the main land. But fishing activities in the Antrim coast is now no longer exist. A new rope bridge built in the year 2000 is now solely used for tourist attraction. This bridge is 20 meters long and 30 metres high from rocks and water below.

There are many guided tour operators in Belfast and Dublin. They operate day tours into the Atlantic coast. We booked our tour with Paddywagon tours company from Belfast (capital of the Northern Ireland). Carrick-a-rede rope bridge was one of the best attractions of the day. It was an amazing experience to walk over the rope bridge and watch the scenic beauty around. If it is a shiny day, landmass of Scotland can also be seen from this place.

The Roman Bath of Somerset

I registered myself in several trips, organized by the Student Union, University of Sussex. Visit to Stonehenge and Bath city was one of them. After touching Stonehenge, we visited Bath city in the same day of 9th October 2016. It was a long journey (around 3 hours by bus) from University of Sussex.

Bath is the largest city of the Somerset and situated in the bank of the River Avon. But the city is famous for the Bath Abbey, which was established by the Roman. This structure was founded in 7th century and used for Spa.

Brighton Pride 2017

Brighton Pride is the celebration to mark the partial decriminalization of homosexuality in England and Wales. The most attractive part of this event is the parade that takes place every year in Brighton. The first Brighton and Hove gay parade was organized in 1973. But this parade was not held until again 1991.

This year I got an opportunity to watch this event. Before reaching in the Old Stein junction, I could not believe that such a huge gathering could take place to watch this parade. It was 5th August 2017. Thousands of spectators were standing and seating both side of the roads to cheer the parade. It is very difficult to portray the actual staging of the parade and its surroundings in photographs. But I must say, I have never seen such colourful and diverse procession before.

Kite Festival In Stanmer Park

During my stay in Brighton, I have experienced lot of colourful events around me. University of Sussex and the communities in Brighton keep its residents always busy with something interesting and special. Kite festival in Stanmer Park is such a remarkable event. This festival ground is very adjacent to the university campus.

This year, the event was organized on 8th and 9th of July and was a continuation of consecutive 39 years of celebration. The days were very sunny and perfect for flying kites. It also helped me to capture some colours of enjoyment and cheerful atmosphere of the ground. Here are the representations of my camera in the festival.

Whitehawk: From Top of The Manor Hill

I often visit Brighton Racecourse ground and Manor hill in Brighton. A serene town in the valley of the hill astounds me. That day I could not resist myself to click the camera button. Later, I have come to know that, the name of this town is Whitehawk.

Lewes Bonfire 2016

Going to Lewes with the walking society of the University of Sussex was fixed earlier. It was my first trip with the university walking society. We walked through the hills and valley from University of Sussex to Lewes town. It took around 3 hours to reach there but it was amazing to see the beautiful landscapes of Sussex and chatting all the way with friends while walking.

Lewes is a very small town of United Kingdom and Lewes Bonfire is celebrated on the 5th of November every year. It is a celebration of foiling gun powder attack in the House of Lords in 1605. Some English Catholics tried to blow the House of Lords with gunpowder. But their plot was revealed and foiled. This celebration also commemorates the memory of seventeen Protestants martyrs who were burned due to their faith.

There are several societies in Lewes who arrange this program every year. They celebrate it through colorful procession in the street and fireworks display.

It was an unique experience for me to watch such traditional attires and appearances in the street. Though sometime it was very risky because the fire sticks blaze very near to the eyes that might cause accidents. Some photographs of my experience of the celebration are shared here.

Yet now in this year, 19 June was the warmest day in United Kingdom. I was roaming around the Old Stein area of Brighton and amazed with the crowd in the sea beach. Despite having an enjoyment of colourful attires of people in the sea beach, I enjoyed the refreshment of the birds as they were bathing in the street pools and fountains.

I captured this photo while this bird was enjoying cool water bath under a road side fountain in Brighton city centre. Though, It was a very hot day in UK but the calmness and spirituality in the face of the bird give me a soothing touch in my mind.

যুক্তরাজ্যের ঠান্ডাকে হার মানাতে না পারার ভয়ে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শীতকালীন ছুটিতে ঘুরে এলাম স্পেন আর ইতালি। একটি হলো ভৌগোলিক, সাংস্কৃতিক দিক বিবেচনায় ইউরোপের সবচেয়ে বৈচিত্রপূর্ণ দেশ, আরেকটি হলো ইউরোপিও সভ্যতার আদিভূমি। এই দুই দেশে পর্যটকদের জন্যে নানা বৈচিত্র থাকলেও, দুটো বিষয়ে সামঞ্জস্যতা পাওয়া যায়, তা হলো আনাচে-কানাচেতে ওরা গড়ে তুলেছে জাদুঘর আর প্লাজা বা পিয়াজ্জা। স্প্যানিয়ার্ডরা বলে প্লাজা আর ইতালিতে পিয়াজ্জা।

প্লাজা বা পিয়াজ্জা হলো একটা খোলা জায়গা, কোনো ঐতিহাসিক স্থাপনা বা সরকারি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভবনের সামনের খোলা প্রান্তর। সহজ ভাষায় আমরা যেটাকে চত্বর বলি। এদের কোনোকোনোটা আবার একেকটা বড়ো স্টেডিয়ামের সমান। এই প্লাজা বা পিয়াজ্জা গুলো গভীর রাত অব্দি পর্যটকে ঠাসা থাকে। এখানকার মেঝে গুলো বড় বড় পাথুরে অমসৃণ টাইলস দিয়ে বাঁধানো। সৌন্দর্য বর্ধনের জন্যে রয়েছে বিভিন্ন রকমের ফুয়ারা, তাতে আবার আলোকসজ্জা করা। লোকজন ফুয়ারার ধারে, চত্বরের সিড়িতে বসে হাসছে, গল্প করছে আর কৃত্তিম ফুয়ারা এবং আলোকসজ্জার সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করছে, সেই সাথে চলছে জাদু এবং শারীরিক বিভিন্ন কসরত প্রদর্শনী, যেটাকে ইংরেজিতে বলে স্ট্রিট শো। এভাবে শহরবাসীর সারাদিনের পরিশ্রম এবং পর্যটকদের ক্লান্তি ফুয়ারাগুলোর শীতল স্পর্শে আর নিয়ন আলোতে ধুয়ে-মুছে যাচ্ছে। কিন্তু অবাক করা বিষয় হলো প্লাজা বা পিয়াজ্জার মধ্যে কোনো খাবার দোকান বা পানশালা নেই, কেউ ফেরি করে খাবার বিক্রিও করে না। দোকানপাট সব চত্বরের বাইরে। তাই প্লাজা গুলোর মেঝে পরিষ্কার ঝকঝকে।

আমাদের দেশেও ঢাকা শহরে এরকম প্লাজা বা পিয়াজ্জা সংস্কৃতি দেখা যায় যেমন শাহবাগ চত্বর, টিএসসি চত্বর। কিন্তু এগুলো মূলত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এবং ছাত্রছাত্রীকেন্দ্রিক। তাই সন্ধ্যার পর প্রায় সকল বড় শহর গুলোতেই নগরবাসীকে রাস্তার ধারে, রাস্তা দখল করা চায়ের দোকানে, ফুচকার দোকানে আড্ডা দিতে দেখা যায়। ফলাফল স্বাভাবিক ভাবেই আশাব্যঞ্জক নয়। রাস্তায় যানজটের সৃষ্টি, যত্রতত্র উচ্ছিষ্ট খাবার আর আবর্জনার স্তুপ। অসচেতনতা আর সঠিক পরিকল্পনার অভাবে এতো সুন্দর একটা স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত আয়োজনকে আমরা স্বীকৃত একটা রূপ দিতে পারিনি। স্বভাবতই বাঙালি আড্ডা প্রিয়, তাই বাঙালির এই স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত চর্চাকে রাষ্ট্রীয় ভাবে কিছুটা প্রণোদনা দেয়াই যেতে পারে। আমাদের সিটিকর্পোরেশন এবং পৌরসভাগুলো প্রতিদিন সকালে রাস্তা, ফুটপাথ পরিষ্কার করতে প্রচুর জনশক্তি আর অর্থ বরাদ্দ করে থাকে। পরিকল্পনা করে শহর গুলোতে দুএকটা স্থান নির্বাচন, একটু সৌন্দর্য বর্ধন আর জনসচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি করে এই প্রতিষ্ঠান গুলো নিজ নিজ শহরবাসীর আস্থা অর্জন করার সাথে সাথে নিশ্চিতভাবে কিছু অর্থ অপচয়ও রোধ করতে পারতো বলে মনে হয়।

Welcoming Summer at University of Sussex

I am experiencing the longest winter so far in my life here in Sussex. When I came here in September, It was winter. And it is continuing for last seven months. Yesterday was bit different. It was sunny and students of the university welcomed summer with different festive events. I was amazed to see the dancing performance and Holi festival celebration in the library square of University of Sussex. Now whatever the temperature is, after participating in such summer events, literally I can not deny that this is the beginning of summer in Sussex.

Sonarang Math, Munshiganj

Sonarang Math (সোনারং মঠ) is an unique structure built by a son to commemorate his parents death. There are two math built on the cremation ground of one's father and mother. It is predicted that those maths were made in the year of 1843 and 1883. Now, these structures remain unused and become the sanctuary for hundreds of birds.

Homestead of Totini Prasad Pal

This is nothing very important in the history. I have searched the google on the name Totini prasad pal. Nothing related found. But Munshiganj district is full of such untold history and old structure.

I went to Abdullahpur Mouza (আবদুল্লাহপুর মৌজা) of Tangibari Upazilla for an eviction duty. There in the village, I noticed an old house. Realizing my interest, some locals told me that there are more houses like that, just within short distance. After finishing my job and having lunch, I went to the place, the locals directed earlier. It is called Pal's House. I found a man delivering teaching to some students in one of the room of the house. He came out and narrated him one of the distance offspring of the owner of the house. According to his description, This house was built by Totini Prasad Pal (তটিনি প্রসাদ পাল). He was a rich businessman. He had business of betel nut (সুপারী).

There were several houses in the place, all were owned by Totini Prasad Pal. Now, the houses are possessed by some distance offspring of the man and locals predict that those houses were built during middle of the nineteenth century.

Every district of Bangladesh has such kind of old hindu properties. Some has become vested property and others just became extinct.

History of Bikrampur & Nateswar

Munshiganj district, formerly a subdivision under Dhaka district, was established in 1984. Today's Munshiganj (মুন্সীগঞ্জ) was once a part of ancient glorious region of Bikrampur. Bikrampur (Munshiganj) was the political and cultural centre of ancient Bengal. It was officially known as Bikrampur (বিক্রমপুর) until 1986. It was the capital city of the Chandra, Varman and Sean dynasties, from the beginning of the 10th century AD to the middle of the 13th century AD.

Bikrampur was the birth place of great Buddhist scholar Atish Dipankar. He was born here in Bajrajogini (বগ্রযোগিনী) Village in the year between (980-983) AD. At that moment the subcontinent had three renowned Bihars/Universities. Those were Shompuri Bihar (সোমপুর বিহার), Odontopuri Bihar (ওদন্তপুর বিহার) and Bikramshila Bihar (বিক্রমশীলা বিহার). Atish Dipankar taught his disciples in all of the Bihars/Universities. Bikramshila Bihar was the largest among others. Historians predict that the Bikramshila Bihar was established by the 2nd king of Pal dynasty (Dharmapal) and it was in the Bikrampur area. It is believed that, there were 8000 students and 108 teachers in the Bikramshila Bihar/University.

Recently in Raghurampur, very near to Bajrajogini village an old Buddhist educational site is unearthed. The carbon dating of the artifacts of the site reveals that the site was built during 990-1050 AD. Consequently, archaeologists have unearthed another ancient Buddhist site that is believed to be a thousand years old at Nateshwar (নাটেশ্বর) in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj. This site is predicted as one of the oldest archaeological sites in Bangladesh. Archaeologist expects that the excavation will also reveal early life of Atish Dipankar (অতীশ দিপঙ্কর). The excavation work has started in 2013 by Agrasar Vikrampur Foundation in collaboration with Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of China. Twenty Bangladeshi and four Chinese experts took part in the excavation. The excavation at the site was remain suspended from late February to November due to monsoon. Research Director Prof Shah Sufi Mustafizur Rahman said they found two roads made of old bricks in ‘attractive architectural design’, a zigzag 2.75-metre wide wall was constructed with over-burnt bricks, probably to protect the structure from moisture, a prayer room of Buddhist monks measuring nine metres in length and nine metres wide, an octagonal stupa and brick-built drains and many other archaeological relics at the site. The artistic brick works on the temple also reveal its architectural significance. Its existence (very near to the birth place of Atish Dipankar) and time of establishment directs the researchers to think it as the Bikramshila Bihar/University. But this announcement requires more proof.

At present it is excavated by Bangladesh and China archaeologist’s joint team. Dr Sufi Mostafizur Rahman, a professor of the archaeology department of Jahangirnagar University, is leading the excavation team. He also said the discovery of the relics was the evidence of the existence of a ‘rich civilization’ in Bikrampur in the past.

Kaptai Lake, Rangamati

Kaptai is the largest lake in Bangladesh and it is man made. It is created to generate electricity through hydro-electric project. This lake is larger than 700 sq.km. The construction of the dam that created this huge lake was installed in 1962. Many households, arable lands are went under water. The palace of the king of the Chakmas was also flooded and now is under water. The scenic beauty of Rangamati is marvelous and this lake just makes it a picturesque paradise.

Mohini Mill, Kushtia

While searching the potentials of Kushtia district in an beautiful evening of the last october, my colleague drew my attention to an abandoned building. He informed that the building is the part of century old Mohini Mill. I could not believe that, I would get the Mill so near to the district headquarter. Even, I forgot the presence of this mill in Kushtia district. I read about the mill at “Shaheb, Bibi, Golam” of Bimal Mitro's epic literature. It was almost evening of the day. So, I decided to take some snaps of the mill structure in the next morning. Though, it was my departure date, I made a narrow space in my schedule to capture some of its recent views. Unfortunately could not collect the locals comments about the mill and its past. So, the below compilation is the summary that I have got in the internet about the mill and some from my memory that I recollected from the novel named "Shaheb, Bibi, Golam".

The Mohini Mill was set up in 1908 over 33 acres of land, in a place named Belghoria of Kushtia district. A nobleman named Mohini Mohon Chakrabartyi set up the mill on his own land. Within 1912 the activity of the mill expanded largely. Ten years later the mill had a formidable collection of 529 looms with 19,000 shuttles. According to a record, up to 55,000 yards of fine fabrics were produced everyday during this period. It was presumed that every Bangali at that era had used the fabrics of Mohini mill. This mill had also captured the foreign market. During its golden period, it produced not only fabrics but also various other items like Shidur, which is used to make sign on the forehead of the Hindu women as a symbol of marriage.

The production on Mohini Mill came to an halt in 1965, when a war broke out between Pakistan and India. After the war, the Pakistani military regime declared Mohini Mill an enemy property and forced Mohini Mohon out of the country along with his family members. Actually this was the end of the Mohini Mill. At that moment, the Mohini Mill had 33 acres of land and about 2,000 employees. With a school named after Mohini Mohon, the mill boasted of a playground, a large pond, a market, a medical center, a temple and 284 single and double room quarters.

The Pakistan Government then transfered the supervision of the mill to the then EPIDS (East Pakistan Industrial Development Service). Following the independence of Bangladesh, Mohini Mill was nationalized and handed over to the BTMC (Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation). Mismanagement and anarchy gripped the institution. Corruption, misappropriation of funds and looting became rampant in and around the Mohini Mill. In 1978 the government took another initiative to save the mill from falling apart. The government set up BMR project taking help from British government. This time the mill was producing 1500 bells of cotton thread everyday. But incurred more loss. In 1982 when losses started rocketing, the government laid off 3,000 employees and shut it down through liquidation. Then the government decided to sell it. The Mohini Mill was restarted with a new name — Shah Makhdum Mill —on January 31, 1985 with only 100 employees. But the private management failed to click and in 1987 the mill was shut down with 10-months salary unpaid to the employees. After various attempts the mill was returned into production on 1989, but again closed down the following year. In 1990 the government took the mill under its custody and decided to sell it again but it failed due to court injunction on the sale as the private owner had defaulted with a loan of TK 10 crore they had borrowed from the bank to start the mill back in 1985 and that was the end of this decades old famous Mohini Mill.

Now, a part of this mill is used by the Ansar Force. Most of the buildings are abandoned. The resident of the Mohini family is under government use. Once upon a time, it was full with opportunity, hope and life. But now, the century old structures are only witnessing the glorious past.
