Today John L and Scott sit down to discuss the impact of J Dilla and what his music meant to the culture. JD's signature can be felt and heard in timeless classics such as "Runnin", "Stakes is High", and "Donuts". His work on the seminal LP "Fan-tas-tic Vol. 1" birthed the Neo-Soul movement still going strong today, and his beats laid the groundwork for countless producers in Hip-Hop today.

Dilla's music is timeless and his memory will live on forever because of it.

This week we shake the format of the show up a little bit and start doing series-based episodes based on iconic Hip-Hop albums and the artists that created them.

There is no better group to kick things off with than A Tribe Called Quest. Q-Tip, Phife, Jarobi, and Ali formed their own lane in the early 90's and created legions of fans of all ages for almost 30 years strong. Their jazz-fusion and sample-based production is as much a part of the Golden Age soundtrack as any other.

For a debut album, People's Instinctive Travels and the Path's of Rhythm was far ahead of its time - that along with De La Soul's seminal debut Three Feet High and Rising - kicked off an unprecedented era of creativity that defined the 1990's as the most dominant decade in Hip-Hop.

Join John L and Scott as they also get it in over new music released over the past few months from up and coming labels Mello Music Group and Mass Appeal Records. Their collective roster of artists are making purists everywhere hopeful and believers that Hip Hop most definitely is NOT dead.

B-Real, Sen Dog, Mellow Man Ace, and DJ Muggs came together to form one of the most influential groups in the game with the release of their highly acclaimed debut album - “Cypress Hill” - in 1991.

B-Real’s nasal delivery combined with Sen’s punchlines and energy told the story of life on the streets of Southern LA and and how they preferred mind elevation over deadly violence to ease the pain of their day-to-day reality.

Cypress Hill are considered among the pioneers of West Coast Hip Hop and icons of the genre having easily solidified their place in history as the first Latino group to consistently achieve multi-platinum record sales worldwide.

Violence can never be the answer and real solutions need to be discussed. Coming together as people and engaging in real dialogue centered around mutual respect is the only way to begin healing - not war.

Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell came together in the early 80's to form one of the most influential and iconic groups in Hip Hop and all of music. From the black Fedora to the shell toe Adidas to their legendary name - RUN DMC's legacy in the game is secure forever.

Courageously tackling societal issues affecting everyday people in and around their native Hollis, Queens - the trio would go down in history as the catalyst that brought Hip Hop culture out of the clubs and street corners into the international mainstream where it remains to this day. Run and DMC's serve-and-volley approach would be imitated many times over as new groups came on the scene trying to duplicate this crew's meteoric success.

Run-DMC's fusion of rock and rap signaled a shift from the classic sound of the era and willingness to experiment that would eventually broaden their crossover appeal unlike any other group of the time - regardless of genre.

His death at only 25 on September 13, 1996 brought a violent end to one of the most prolific and beloved artists of our generation, garnering legions of fans some of whom weren’t even born when his music was released.

Despite the critics and detractors who focused on the disparity of his message, legal issues, and enigmatic image - Tupac was a force in the game and fiercely loyal to his family and crew at Death Row Records.

Phife, together with Q-tip, Ali Shaheed Mohammed, and Jarobi helped create the sound of the Golden Era and ushered in an unprecedented level of creativity to the game, garnering millions of fans/heads that could instantly relate to them and their message. Q-tip’s jazz-infused production style laid the perfect canvas for the duo as their music formed the soundtrack of the 90’s and beyond.

March 9, 1997

Nineteen years ago the Hip Hop community lost an icon to senseless violence, cutting tragically short the promising career of a supremely talented artist. Christopher Wallace left behind a revered catalog of music that still garners a nostalgic reaction from fans, some of whom weren’t even alive when initially released.

Bursting on the scene in 1993 with the seminal party track "Party and Bullshit”, Biggie’s appeal was undeniable and just as strong today as it ever was. His gritty autobiographical debut LP Ready to Die was both shockingly hard-hitting and vulnerable, exposing his unmatched storytelling ability and witty lyrical delivery that firmly cemented his position in Hip Hop as a superior lyricist who some feel is among the best of all time.

Always representing Brooklyn to the fullest, Big’s memory and musical contributions to Hip Hop will never be forgotten.

This week the #TLP crew covers the debut album of one of the greatest hip hop duos of all time with Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid in Full. The influential producer who learned from the great Marley Marl preceded the likes of Pete Rock and DJ Premier, while the legendary God MC Rakim Allah kicked off an entire legacy of cerebral emcee’s such as Nas, Pharaoh Monche, Mos Def, 2Pac, Kool G Rap, Eminem, and Jay-Z just to name a few.

Paid in Full was the statement that Hip Hop needed to catapult the logical side-progression from party records into more street conscious and cerebral topics that are still being emulated and followed today. Eric B’s hard hitting and creative production style provided the perfect backdrop for Rakim to lay his smooth-as-silk
vocals flawlessly on top.

There was no denying their impact on Hip Hop as Rakim’s style caused an uneasy ripple throughout not only the studio bigs but also amongst his peers because of his sophisticated vocab and layered subject matter surrounding knowledge-of-self derived from Five Percent Nation lessons. Despite his diminutive stature, Rakim was leaps and bounds above his competitors and there is no disputing his place alongside Eric B in Hip Hop history.

Join John L, Detrone, and Scott as they get it in and discuss the lyrics behind arguably the most esoteric and supremely lyrical artists of all-time

      <itunes:summary>New episode of The Light!!

To bring in the new year the right way we dug in and reviewed BDP's debut album "Criminal Minded" track for track, discussing the introduction and impact of arguably the greatest emcee of all time - the judge, jury, and defense minister of hip hop - KRS One.

Making sure we ALL know the difference between a rapper and an emCEE, "The Teacher" cannot and will not be contained, transcending any concept of an era. KRS is undefinable and the supreme voice for Hip Hop culture as we know it.

With Scott La Rock and Ced Gee from Ultramagnetic MC's contributing to the production side of this monumental LP, Boogie Down Productions turned their entry to the game into a historic moment for music regardless of genre.

Cerebral lyrics coupled with that traditional boom-bap was the perfect one-two combo that dropped competition and opposition to their knees with an effectiveness that even the almighty Juice Crew can attest to.

Is KRS One the most relevant emcee in the game?

Join John L, Detrone, and Scott as they get it in over the message from the Blastmaster and bring you a momentous episode for 2016 you don't wanna miss!!

The debut album from the most controversial member of one of the most controversial Hip Hop groups of all time. The critically acclaimed LP AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted signaled a departure from NWA for Ice Cube to not only the hands of Public Enemy and The Bomb Squad - but to NYC.

Cube was already the hitman, but the Chuck D-fueled influence brought a new level of no-holds barred lyricism that literally punched you in the mouth from the first track to the last.

From racial tension and police brutality in America to the consequences of the hustle game, Ice Cube spares absolutely nothing and no one.

Detrone, John L, and Scott pay homage to one of the most iconic groups of all time in Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five and discuss what they meant to the Hip Hop game. Despite Flash's innovation on the turntables and the cohesiveness between Melle Mel, Kid Creole, Scorpio, Rahiem, and Cowboy - they were shrouded in controversy and internal discontent but that didn't stop them from coming together at Sugar Hill Records for the briefest of moments to help lay the groundwork for that classic sound still heavily sampled today.

Grandmaster Melle Mel was critical to he movement that pioneered the MC takeover as spotlight shifted away from the DJ for the first time and placed the mic right up front - on wax AND in the nightclub. His monumental verses on the classic record Beat Street helped solidify his place in history as an emcee way ahead of his time.

Just the mere mention of these films sparks nostalgia and reminiscence of a time period where b-boy'ing, MC'ing, Graffiti writing, and DJ'ing were being defined as critical elements of the culture. The creativity and different styles spread like wildfire and we were all affected never to look back. Substance versus the gimmick and how the lasting power of each drives the marketing strategy of the big studios. Is 50 a gimmick? We get it in and hold back NOTHING.

Det, John L, and Scott also finish the review of Public Enemy's debut LP "Yo! Substance versus the gimmick and how the lasting power of each drives the marketing strategy of the big studios. Is 50 a gimmick? We get it in and hold back NOTHING.

Det, John L, and Scott also finish the review of Public Enemy's debut LP "Yo! Bum Rush The Show" and dig deeper into how Chuck D and Flav shifted the mindset of Hip Hop, filling the deep chasm between ignorance and knowledge-of-self with an unprecedented level of consciousness that was so desperately needed at the time.

An epic episode of The Light Podcast that you don't wanna miss!

<itunes:summary>Part 1 of a LONG overdue discussion on the commercialization of Hip Hop and the effect it's having on the culture. How can the studios market and distribute what they don't understand? Why are we letting them get away with it?

Detrone pays homage to one of the greatest emcee's of all time and memorializes a jazz/bebop legend who's influence is still felt strong today.

Public Enemy's debut album "Yo! Bum Rush the Show" released in 1987 and was a force to be reckoned with. Chuck D and Flavor Flav kicked the door in and exposed societal ills affecting our communities for what they were. PE taught us to open our eyes and think a little harder then we ever had before, while Terminator X made sure we felt the urgency of the message contained in this classic LP.

Scott, John L, and Detrone review each track and discuss how important this album was to Hip Hop, but also how Chuck and Flav made us politically conscious - whether we knew it or not.
