DINING OPTIONS

Fire and Smoke is the a quaint spot located just off of Hwy 17 Business in Myrtle Beach. Stopping here will be one of the best decisions you will ever make on vacation. The plate portions are small but so is the price. This will allow you to order multiple items from their amazing menu. P.S. – You have to try the wood-grilled Caesar Salad.

New Your Prime Well, the name speaks for itself. This company has never failed me at any location, and Myrtle Beach is no different. If award-winning steaks and seafood dishes are what you want, this is where you can get them. Ask for Robert Powell, not only is he a great waiter but an avid golfer as well.

Tourists of all ages come to Myrtle Beach for many reasons. This is no different for the golfers that come to the Grand Strand. Whether it’s to escape the weather or the husband/wife for a few days, each person has his/her own reason. With well over 80 courses to choose from, the Myrtle Beach area can accommodate the needs of most golfers. From price to incentives and from distance to difficulty, golfers use these determining factors to choose where they want to play each year. Over time, golfers find reasons to create a list of favorites…whether you scored your lowest round ever at a course, you made your first hole-in-one, or the course and the weather always seemed to be ideal all can be responsible for helping make the list.

Here are my top-5 most peaceful courses to play:

#5) River’s Edge

River’s Edge

River’s Edge located along the Shallotte River. Not only is it a scenic course with spectacular views, you are sure to have relaxing day. Catching cool breezes off the many water hazards while playing risk reward par 4’s and 5’s will keep you coming back. If you are anything like me, depending on how you are playing, you might rather be on one of the many boats doing a little afternoon fishing.

#4) Pawley’s Plantation

Pawley’s Plantation

Coming in at #4 is Pawley’s Plantation, a Jack Nicklaus signature course located on the south end of the Grand Strand. The tree-lined front 9 winds through beautiful neighborhoods while playing well-manicured holes. What sets this course apart are the inlet views and the sound of the ocean that can be heard on 6 of the holes on the back 9. Par 3’s that play over Atlantic coastal marshes with sometime huge wind gusts challenge golfers of all ages.

#3) Dunes Club

9th Green at The Dunes Club

Coming in at #3 on my list, the Dunes Club never disappoints if you are looking for a relaxing day on the course. The crashing of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, the quiet serenity of the historic grounds from previous Champions Tour events, as well as the beautiful layout Robert Trent Jones created easily puts the Dunes in my top-5. The only reason that the Dunes Club is not higher is the fact that 2 golf holes are located right along Highway 17 which takes away from what would make it a perfect afternoon of golf.

#2) Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

Caledonia Golf & Fish

#2 on my list is Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, also located in Pawley’s Island and one of Mike Stranz‘s finest designs. This amazing layout is an all around quiet, relaxing experience from the time you drive through the 200-year old live oaks lining your path to the first hole until watching golfer’s final approach shots while rocking in chairs on the back porch of the clubhouse. Nothing says relaxing and Lowcountry like playing the Caledonia Golf &Fish Club.

#1) Bald Head Island

Bald Head Island in NC

Atop my list is Bald Head Island – a course so peaceful and secluded that you can only reach it by ferry. If you ever want to take one day out of the year to enjoy life and the game of golf, I advise you spend it at Bald Head Island Golf Club. Your day starts with a peaceful 25 minute ferry ride to the Island. Once there, you and your clubs are taken by golf cart to the clubhouse on the other side of the Island. You then begin your adventure on the George Cobb (and just recently renovated) Tim Cate design. The sound of the ocean and beach wildlife fill you head and relax you while you play some of the best golf holes the Carolinas have to offer. Most golfers never want to leave so the course allows free replays. Most people take advantage of this just to enjoy a sunset cruise before the travel back to civilization and reality.

While not making it into my top-5 personal favorites, honorable mentions go to Tidewater and Cape Fear National – both spectacular, peaceful courses to play while visiting the Grand Strand!

The annual Valentine’s Day Massacre at the Dye Club had to be postponed due to icy weather conditions to the 25th of February.

You may be asking yourself “what is the Valentine’s Day Massacre?”. Well it’s when the Superintendent of the golf course gets revenge on the golfers!

The Dye course, which was voted South Carolina’s “Golf Course of the Year” for 2013 already is one of the toughest tracks along the Grand Strand. From the Platinum, or the back tees, this course measures well over 7300 yards — but that did not stop Duane Whittle, the Superintendent of the Dye Club at Barefoot Golf Resort. He stretched the course out to close to 7800 yards, by creating new teeing areas for a select few golfers that wanted to punish themselves on a windy day in February.

Garrett Fonvielle and Hugh Royer, III

The format for the tournament is a 2-man scramble, with groups playing in 4-somes. Each of the groups swapping scorecards to make sure no one got pencil-whipped. Some of the groups had to take their scorecards with them to the greens, using a tally system, to make sure the other players were accurately keeping track of their putts.

I can tell you first hand, it’s harder than you think.

My 2-man team consisted of myself and Hugh Royer III. Hugh played professionally for 14 years, which included 4 wins on the Web.com tour, 1 win on the South African Tour, and 4 years on the PGA Tour.

Tough Pin

After 2 great shots, we were putting for eagle and ended up making a 10. This may give you an indication of the pin placements on some of these swift greens! The greens that day were rolling around a 14 on the stimpmeter and the pin placements, if there was a pin in the hole at all, were in some of the most vicious places. Two of the holes had the cup cut on the front of the green with the pin located off of the back of the green. Certain holes had no pins, only holes cut so when approaching the green you had no idea where to hit the ball. To top it all off, the wind was gusting up to 20-mph which always seemed to be in our face. On the other hand it was a beautiful sunny day in Myrtle Beach with the temperatures reaching 72 degrees that day.

By the way, we finished in 4th place carding a 92 for the day.

If you would like to play in this event feel free to come down in February and try your luck. The event is open to the public.

If you would just like to play the course normally, we can accommodate that as well. You can play a single round at the Dye Club if you like with the best pricing given on Wednesday’s of each week with the “Thank Barefoot It’s Wednesday” deal. You may also play the Dye Club along with its sister courses.. the Love, Norman, and Fazio discounted in our Barefoot 4-round Special.

The beginning of the year brings about change for everyone. Whether you have made plans to become healthier, wealthier, or wiser is up to you. The Myrtle Beach golf industry has decided to make some changes of its own to accomplish some of these tasks. New packages and changes to existing packages have been made to help you get more out of your golf vacation in 2014.

The first three weeks in January are the busiest weeks for quoting Spring golf here along the Grand Strand. After these three weeks, the majority of the peak tee times at some of the most demanded golf courses will have already been taken. Make sure you get your quotes in early to ensure the best accommodations and tee times for your group. Even though the first three weeks of the year are the busiest, you can take advantage of accommodation specials as early as October of the previous year. Golf rates are usually announced early so this will be the best time to save the most money on your vacation.

As I stated earlier, the golf courses have listened to you the golfer and here is a run down of what is new and exciting for 2014 in alphabetical order:

Barefoot Love Course

Barefoot Resort is offering a special for booking golf on any Wednesday as well as offering huge discounts for booking Fall early. They also have a special if you play three of their courses you get the fourth round free.

Ocean Ridge Golf

The Big Cats are now offering lunch with their 4-round package as well as allowing the golfer to play all 4 rounds in the AM. This is a change from the 2013 package and gives the golfer more incentive to book their courses.

Founder’s Club at Pawley’s Island

The Classic Package has undergone changes as well. In the past, they offered a package where you play four rounds and you automatically get free replays. This year they have a simple 3 or 4- round package without replays or they have a package that offers a cheaper rate for playing just in the PM. Classic has also partnered with East Coast Golf Management to help boost their individual course bookings since their four current courses are located so far apart.

River’s Edge Golf

East Coast Golf Management is the new big surprise here along the Grand Strand. This company offers 2, 3, 4, and 5-round packages that include drinks, meals, discounts in pro shops in addition to free golf balls when booking their packages. East Coast now has 22 courses along the Grand Strand and continues to grow.

Glen Dornoch

The Glen’s Group is again offering their 3+5 package — pay for 3 rounds and the 4th round is free as well as pre-booked replays after 1:30 PM. New for this year and to entice you even more, lunch is included with your round of golf.

Legend’s Clubhouse

The Legend’s Group has had much success with their 5-round (or 4+1) package and will continue to offer this throughout 2014. Buffet breakfast, lunch, and two beers are included with your rounds of golf at any of their courses.

King’s North

The National Group released the Prime Time Rewards Package last Fall and it was a huge success. This package has been extended into the Spring season and is already the most requested package. Look for additional offerings in this package for the upcoming Fall season.

Hopefully this will give you, the golfer, a little insight into what Myrtle Beach has to offer in the Spring of 2014. There is value out there, just ask and we can set your group up with a golf package that fits your needs.

In this day and age, every golfer is looking for an advantage over the course or a fellow golfer. In the past 7 years, there have been tremendous advances in the game of golf from a technological standpoint. Not only do clubs allow golfers to hit the ball farther, but the ball is traveling longer distances than ever before.

The main advantage to the golfer is being able to find the accurate distance to the hole. Have you ever watched a professional tournament on t.v. and seen a player just walk up to the ball and hit it? Of course not. When they hit their shot, they know the exact distance, wind direction, and elevation. Obviously, they have the luxury of a caddy. Amateur golfers on the other hand need to rely on other ways to improve their game. This started the competition between GPS and rangefinder companies.

GPS Layout

Companies such as Golf Logic try to put this information in the average golfer’s hands via GPS. Apps can easily be downloaded for free or yearly fees on most smartphones and can give the novice golfer an overview of the hole as well as any bunkers, water, hazards, etc. that is between their ball and the hole. In addition, it gives a somewhat accurate distance to the green. Many courses today have golf carts equipped with GPS to help speed play as well as promote items in the clubhouse and pro shops. Courses that have newer advanced GPS systems can keep golfers updated on national sporting events, weather, and even stock market changes. However, there are disadvantages to the hand-held GPS. The average golfer may not need all of the fancy gadgets to score 90 on a course. He may lose focus on his game and think he can make an extremely difficult shot when in reality he should just hit a safe shot, make par or bogey, and move onto the next hole.

Bushnell Tour v3

While some prefer the technology of GPS, others tend to favor the simplicity of a rangefinder. Rangefinders vary in price and functionality. Leading manufacturers such as Bushnell and Leupold have models ranging anywhere from $200 to $500. The main advantage is that these devices can also be used off the course while practicing or for activities such as hunting and target shooting. Bushnell’s newest rangefinder, the Tour V-3 Slope Edition, comes equipped with JOLT technology which sends micropulses when the exact target is acquired. This eliminates all doubt a player has when hitting a shot. Disadvantages of the rangefinder is that it is only accurate for direct line of sight. If you’re playing a hole that is a dogleg right and the flag is blocked out by trees, then you cannot get an accurate reading. As is the case with GPS, a rangefinder does not allow you to see any hazards that may be between you and the target.

Regardless of preference, these devices make yardage books obsolete. Golf courses often undergo renovations or modifications which makes their yardages books inaccurate. A simple device like GPS or a rangefinder eliminates any inaccuracy.

If I were asked which device I prefer, my answer would most definitely be a rangerfinder due to its convenience and precision. However, if GPS is available, I will also use that in order to obtain the most accurate information to hit my upcoming shot.

In late August, I had the opportunity to play a course that I had not played in quite some time. Jay Smith, the Head Professional at Prestwick Country Club in Myrtle Beach, SC, invited me and a few other golf directors to play at his course.

Pete Dye Deep Bunkers

The Pete and P.B. Dye links-style designed course is a beautiful layout that is complimented by undulating fairways and some of the fastest greens in Myrtle Beach thanks to the Tifeagle Bermuda. The day we played, temperatures and humidity were high and the greens were rolling a 15 on the stimpmeter. Yes, that is correct, a FIFTEEN!

I played with Jason Corneau, the 1st assistant, and he gave me a ton of knowledge about the course and how it was built. When playing, you may be able to see the differences, but supposedly 9 holes were designed by the father, Pete Dye, and 9 holes were designed by the son, P.B. Dye. Each of their 9 hole layouts winds through manicured neighborhoods adorned with amazing homes throughout.

A majestic clubhouse overlooks a massive lake that was constructed using the fill dirt to create the rolling fairways and slick greens as well as the elevated teeing areas. Jason also told me the lake, once dug out and before it was filled with water, had banks created on the interior walls and P.B. would drive his Cadillac around pretending it was a race track. Just like most Dye designs, the course tends to start off fairly easy with the difficulty level increasing as the course progresses. This is apparent on the 451 yard par-4 14th hole in addition to hole number 16, which is a 200 yard par-3 with a multi-tier green that if played incorrectly is bound to ruin your round. If you make it through these two holes unscathed, awaiting you will be a 551 yard par-5 and the finishing hole is a long par-4 where the green is protected to the left by a large lake and to the front, back, and right by deep bunkers. GOOD LUCK!

On the home page of our website, golfers get to vote on their favorite courses. Well, I thought I would put in my two cents and give you my Top-10 courses along coastal North and South Carolina.

Plantation style Clubhouse

#10 Heritage Club —– comes in at the #10 spot on my countdown to #1. The Heritage Club is a great layout that is surrounded by huge magnolias and moss-filled live oaks that are over 300 years old. Built on an old plantation, the clubhouse resembles that of an old Southern Plantation home. Located in Pawley’s Island, it’s no more than one hour from most Grand Strand accommodations. Buffet breakfast, lunch, and 2 free draft beers accompany each round of golf at this course.

Hole #9 Peninsula Green at River’s Edge

#9 River’s Edge —– joins the list at #9 on the countdown. River’s Edge Golf and Beach Club, designed by Arnold Palmer, is one of the gems of coastal North Carolina. This private community graciously opened itself to play, allowing golfers from all over the world to see the breathtaking views the members see everyday. Nestled along the Shallotte River, River’s Edge is a must play on your bucket list.

#8 Green at Cape Fear National

#8 Cape Fear National —– the newest course in the area comes in at #8. Cape Fear National, a Tim Cate design, has a phenomenal layout with some of the best bent grass greens in coastal North and South Carolina. Great golf holes, beautiful homes, and wildlife abound at this amazing property located 10 minutes south of Wilmington, NC in one of the areas most up-and-coming developments.

View of the 9th and 18th shared green

#7 Glen Dornoch —- I refer to the #7 course on the list as “the Jewel of the Nile.” This shot- shaping course, designed by Clyde Johnston, is one of my favorite courses to play. Located in Little River, SC, this course is one of the few courses along the Grand Strand that features a double green. The green for holes #9 and #18 is tucked between the clubhouse and the Intracoastal Waterway. On this course, six different holes boast views of the waterway giving the golfer a coastal breeze to cool them off.

Marsh views from this short par-3 and long par-4

#6 Tidewater —- the name says it all and lands at #6 on the countdown. This expansive layout designed by Ken Tomlinson and Hale Irwin gives the golfer a true golfing experience. Views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway solidify the course’s name. The Tidewater community itself takes pride in their facilities as well they should. From top to bottom the course, facilities, and staff are some of the best Myrtle Beach has to offer.

Shared green at Pawley’s Plantation

#5 Pawley’s Plantation —- slipping in right ahead of Tidewater at the #5 slot grabs my attention for many reasons. Designer Jack Nicklaus did an amazing job of placing a top-notch golf course on what has to be some of the most expensive and sought after real estate in South Carolina. This course has jaw-dropping views, a double green, wildlife, as well as some of the most picturesque golf holes located only a short drive from Myrtle Beach. This course can be played for as little as $30 per golfer this Fall if it is booked as a 5th round in the Prime Times Rewards Package.

Number 10 and Number 18 at Dye Club

#4 Dye Club at Barefoot —- jumps in at #4 on the list. This Pete Dye design has to be one of the hardest golf courses — if not THE hardest course — along the Grand Strand. Rolling hills, crossing winds, and high rough make this 7,343 yard par-72 course a real doozi. Play in the “Superintendent’s Challenge” and it may take you two days to finish. Professional golfers, celebrities, and fans come every year to watch the “Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am” which the Dye Club has been hosting since 2003. This course can be played as a single round with specials on Wednesday’s of each week or part of a 4-round golf package which includes three other Barefoot Resort courses. The Dye Club is a MUST play while in Myrtle Beach.

Green Side

#3 Caledonia Golf and Fish Club —- takes the bronze as the #3 course. Designer Mike Strantz shows off his diversity with this relatively short but shot-shaping layout. Golfers come back to this course year after year for the amazing views, friendly service, and pristine conditions that always accompany this amazing course. Take it all in from the Spanish moss-draped live oaks at the entrance or just relax from the rocking chairs located on the pub’s porch while watching golfers finish one of their most enjoyable rounds.

12th Hole Par-3

#2 Dunes Club —- not far behind the #1 course on the list, the Dunes Club slides into the #2 spot. Former site of the Senior Tour Championship from 1994-1999 will now play host to the 47th PGA Professional National Championship. Due to the lavish amenities, beautiful views, and professional staff, the private Dunes Golf and Beach Club is host to many of the area’s premier social events. A tour through the clubhouse and historic memorabilia gallery will show you some of the greats who once traversed this stunning layout. The Robert Trent Jones, Sr. 1948 design is getting a quick overhaul to lengthen the course and to replace the greens to a more manageable grass for the climate type in our area. After the improvements are complete, the Dunes Club may overtake my #1 choice.

#1 Bald Head Island Club —- proudly standing at my #1 favorite course to play. This trip requires a full day of planning. An hour drive from Myrtle Beach is followed by a 30-minute ferry ride to Bald Head Island where you are taken by courtesy shuttle to the clubhouse. The original architect, George Cobb, had his design upgraded by Tim Cate (the designer of Cape Fear National, #8 on my list) in 2012. The $3.9 million renovation of the course and practice area created a golfing paradise. Elevation changes, larger fairway landing ares, rebuilt cart paths and bridges, as well as 1,200 tons of sand were brought in to create this massive transformation. The quiet relaxing atmosphere gives the golfer the perfect experience. Mesmerizing views, great golf holes, beautiful sunsets, and the tranquil surroundings of Bald Head Island make this my #1 course to play. Did you know that golf courses all over the world set up their tee sheets differently?

Many factors weigh into the process, but here in Myrtle Beach, the majority of the 18-hole courses do what is called “double teeing.” This is the process where the courses set up their tee sheets to allow golfers to tee off the 1st and 10th tees. Depending on daylight savings time, courses primarily start their tee sheets between 7:00-7:30 a.m. and allow play until 9:00-9:30 a.m. and then resume play again at 12:00-12:30 p.m. until 2:00-2:30 p.m. This allows the courses to maximize their play in the morning when golfers usually tend to want to play.

If these courses did not do this, then there could be a 2 to 3-hour gap on the back nine with no play. This helps the course allow for a higher revenue stream as well as allow more open tee times for replays, but at the same time can hurt the golfer. The golf course is designed to be played from the 1st tee to the 18th tee. If you would like to play the course the way the architect designed it, make sure you ask what hole you are starting on when you book your tee time.

Many golfers like playing around 10 a.m., but this does not fit into many of the courses tee sheets. However, most courses that offer 27 holes such as Brunswick Plantation, Wild Wing, Heather Glen, Arrowhead, Thistle, and Waterway Hills do whats called “triple -teeing” or “double-single-double-teeing.” This allows the golfers that enjoy sleeping in a bit the later or mid-morning times.

Courses in Myrtle Beach during the Winter season often do not get much play. Some of these courses, due to lack of daylight hours, will “single tee.” This allows the maintenance department to get ahead of the players, while at the same time, have workers on the back nine of the course perform daily maintenance to prevent player interruptions.

Golfers, just make sure you speak with your Golf Director and they will be happy to provide you with the closest tee time as possible to what you originally requested.

With a pair of 65’s the first and second day of the tournament, Martin Kaymer, 29, of Germany, jumped out to a 6-shot lead and never looked back. After a tough round of 72 on Saturday, he righted the ship, and shot 1 under on Sunday to win the tournament by 8 strokes. This was the largest margin of victory in the U.S. Open since 2000 when Tiger Woods won by 15 strokes. Kaymer did not make a double bogey during the entire tournament. Based on the conditions and the speed of the greens, this was a victory in itself.

Congratulations for 4 great rounds of championship golf, but let’s find out a little more about the course.

Transformation Hole 9

Architect Donald Ross is responsible for designing the famous Pinehurst No. 2. The course was completed in 1907, but Ross continued to make changes to the course that is considered his masterpiece until his death in April of 1948. In a 2011 renovation project by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, plans were implemented to restore the native sandy areas which were once a large part of Ross’s original design.

Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted two previous U.S. Opens: in 1999 (won by Payne Stewart) and in 2005 (won by Michael Campbell). Pinehurst No. 2 has served as the site of more single golf championships than any course in America. It also makes history this year by becoming the first to host the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open Championships in consecutive weeks.

Some of the viewers watching the tournament turn to social media to voice their opinions about the conditions at Pinehurst. There were mixed opinions about the course, especially the natural areas, and how the players had to adapt their game to the conditions. On TV, the course looked brown in many areas that in most traditional professional events were always green and plush. The PGA and the USGA differ in how courses should be set up. Just look at how plush Augusta National is during Master’s week, then turn around and look at Pinehurst this year. From my personal standpoint, I enjoy the difference in the course conditions. Pinehurst seemed long, quick, and tough but you got rewarded for hitting fairways. The only drawback was that on some of the holes if you hit the fairway you were sometimes still hitting off of brown, dry areas. The course did save over 40 million gallons of water by recreating the sandy areas, but was it a success? I guess it depends on who you ask.. the golfer, the fan, or the guy paying the water bill.

Regardless of the course conditions, I still enjoyed watching some of the inventive shots players made, like Ken Duke putting into the bunker and then holing out to make par on the 9th hole. To me, that is what Championship golf is all about, shot shaping and shot creation.

Use this blog as a forum and let me know what your thoughts are on the course conditions of Pinehurst No 2.

The summer months here along the Grand Strand are filled with families and vacationers looking to experience all our area has to offer. Myrtle Beach has beautiful beaches, amazing restaurants, cool shows and attractions, but most of all an abundance of beautiful golf courses.

Yeah, you’ve heard that all before, we know, BUT, did you know golfing in the summer months can be beneficial to players if they can just stand the heat. Courses know that spring and fall are the peak seasons for golf groups to visit due to usually perfect weather conditions and cheaper accommodations. But the summer season offers extremely low rates on golf because of the heat, PLUS it’s usually the time that many of the courses do their maintenance.

If you can schedule your trip around some of these variables you may be able to play some of our best courses such as the Grand Dunes Resort Course, Caledonia, and TPC of Myrtle Beach for a fraction of the cost during peak season (fall and spring).

BUT, you have to be sure you are prepared for the heat and humidity.

—————————–

Here are a few things you may want to take with you in your golf bag for the hot conditions …

Extra towel(s) = perspiration can cause loss of grip or eye irritation, especially if you are wearing sunblock. Make sure you always have a dry towel to keep this from happening

Extra Gloves = sweat can cause gloves to become worn easily, excessive dampness, and even tearing. Make sure you keep at least 2 gloves and interchange them often to insure a safe grip on your club.

Golf Hat = a golf cap or a full brimmed hat may also keep your head and neck cooler during these hot days. Also courses sell the neck wraps that are usually cold or damp that help keep your body temperature down.

Sunscreen = many courses do not have much shading (such as Thistle, Legends-Moorland, and Barefoot Dye Club) and sunscreen will become your best friend especially if you golf without a hat or visor. Your skin will thank you later.

Water = hydration is the key for making it though your round in the Summer months. Sluggishness and dehydration towards the end of your round, as well as preventing headaches, can be avoided by making sure you drink plenty of water while making your way around the courses.

——————————

Also, try to get earlybird tee times, late PM tee times, or 48-hour or last minute tee times, to avoid the hottest part of the day. You many also want to play courses that are closer to the coast such as Tidewater, Pawley’s Plantation, and the Surf Club so beach winds can help keep you cool. Those are just a few tips that you may want to take into consideration during our summer months when the heat index can reach 115 degrees mixed with 90% or higher humidity.

Enjoy your vacation in Myrtle Beach and enjoy your golf!
