Reading update: Frost and Death

Frost and Death happens to be the last book I’ll be reading for September (and perhaps my first read of October if I don’t finish tonight) but I’m happy to report that I’m LOVING IT so much!!  With its stunning setting, mystery & fairytale vibes, this Snow Queen retelling is magical and one you NEED to add to your TBR!

The story starts with a very secluded young queen, Tove. After loosing her family, she must do all in her power to keep her kingdom afloat, which also includes improving the opinion of the people towards her. And what better way to achieve that than by marrying a suitable candidate to secure a powerful & beneficial alliance?

I really, really like Tove. She’s resilient despite her grief. Her determination to save the kingdom FROM herself. This is the kind of character I happily cheer for and become invested for their emotional wellbeing.

“I am alone—living with a constant numbness weighing me down, a burden surrounding my heart.”

“And that is the fucked-up thing about grief. It consumes me every day. I am grief, and grief is me.”

My heart.

Honestly, I very much look forward to seeing her come into full control of her power that turned the entire kingdom into a frozen mess. And fine, will also admit that the balls, pretty dresses, an a certain dark handsome stranger has me wanting to drop everything to keep on reading.

And can we gush over this fantastic cover? I am so in love with it, it’s SO PERFECT.

So if you like Disney’s Frozen but wanted a fantasy romance focus with arranged marriage & spice, you will definitely like this one!

Why you need to read Days of Flesh & Bone

Picture this: an island with a luscious dark green forest, small quaint towns, stunning sceneries and otherworldly vibes. Aah, I absolutely loved the setting of Days of Flesh & Bone!!

Unfortunately our MC is not too thrilled to get to live for several months in Crescendo Island and I honestly don’t blame her. After being on a car crash caused by her mother, she lost her job and missed her chance of entering college in Seattle along with her best friend Lilly. Feeling dejected and left behind, there is nothing else for Nova to do but to accept her new life with her distant relatives that she just met. It also doesn’t help that she is used to the busy city life and now she arrives in one small town in the island with no WiFi (yikes!!). But her distant family were super kind to her from day one (loved Sage!) and that made things far easier for Nova.

There was constantly an air of mystery to the island and I was invested to learn about the strange occurrences happening in it. I LOVED, getting to read about Aelaterra. It’s a magical land that you can only enter through a passageway. Nova gets to experience this land thanks to Killian, her love interest and he’s such a sweet cinnamon roll of a character, impossible not to love!

And speaking of fantastic characters, I must mention Nova’s aunt Jasmin and cousin Sage. They completely came to her rescue when she needed help the most plus I absolutely loved their family dynamics! She also finds several friends on the island and I was happy to see that even though Nova was a bit awkward & disheartened at the beginning of the story, she had people that made her feel welcomed and at ease.

I really enjoyed Days of Flesh & Bone, it has magic, supernatural creatures, shapeshifting wolves, the found family trope, slow burn romance, lots of action scenes and an intricate world-building! Plus the ending left me intrigued to know more about Nova’s family background story. Super excited to see what comes next!!

Why you need to read Sword of Audantei

Set in a fantasy world with elemental magic, Sword of Audantei was a fast paced novel with intriguing worldbuilding that kept me hooked! There was so much to learn about Audantei, loved the mystery and history of this magical world, and I was specially interested in getting to know how the Stormthrowers’ powers work (people with elemental magic!!)

Our MC of this story is Danilo Altamura, a courageous young man that is passionate about his charge as a Liutenant and is torn between escaping the clutches of his father the General OR seeking his approval. However, as soon as he accidentally shows signs of magic, he becomes a threat to his city since this world is divided by magic wielders & non magic wielders (here called Storm).

I was very invested in Danilo’s story, from knowing his place as a Liutenant to being branded a traitor from something he couldn’t control. Soon his life becomes chaos and mayhem as it quickly falls apart. With nowhere to go, he begrudgingly accepts the help of the people he had sworn to hate. This is a story of someone that hits rock bottom, faces abandonment and now has to unlearn so many things that he thought were correct. Reading about his journey and struggles while learning to control his magic & befriending his new comrades was quite a ride, absolutely loved the found family trope included in this story! Getting to know Enzo and his secret hideout with the “outlaws” was fascinating, and I enjoyed the banter between them!

The intricate plot was thrilling and inspiring, Sword of Audantei was an amazing start to the Artifacts of Anarchy series. And this story wrapped up so nicely while also offering an exciting new beginning for the sequel, I’m looking forward to see what comes next!

Why you need to read Awaken the Fifth Order

I have now finished reading the exciting conclusion of The Immortal Orders series and I just cannot believe it’s over! I’ve had the pleasure of following this series ever since book one came out and this truly feels like a bittersweet moment. Reading about Harlow’s character growth, struggles and  romance between her and Finn has been quite an adventure. Plus coming to know this contemporary fantasy world with a fantastic cast of characters, magic system, supernatural beings, and a rebellion that has shaken the world of these powerful immortals was fascinating!!

From the beginning, Harlow was someone who was struggling with depression from a terrible breakup and the constant bullying from the press she was unfairly receiving. Her character development was the most impressive to read about, and in Awaken the Fifth Order, it was depicted more clearly how much it has taken her to successfully overcome obstacles. And I loved Harlow and Finn together, they both helped each other out with their personal traumas and they were just perfect for each other!

Tensions are high in Nuva Troi, the immortal & human world is near colapse and an impending war is looming on the horizon in Awaken the Fifth Order. However everyone is desperately working together to avoid it at all cost so be ready to read about all the planning, action and plot twists that awaits in this finale! And if you are looking for paranormal fantasy romances, The Immortal Orders is the perfect bingeable series you must check out!

Why you need to read Little Fire

“He would do anything for her— even if it meant losing a part of his soul.”

I’m seriously obsessed with Little Fire. It’s such a fantastic character-driven story with wonderful chemistry between the two main leads. Evangeline (an apothecarist who dreams to become a healer) and Declan (a powerful archmage) are thrown together into a portal that leads to the Shadow realm & they must navigate/survive this world plagued by demons while also dealing with their own feelings for each other and personal traumas. Evangeline’s easygoing personality + Declan’s levelheaded presence is what made them perfect for each other.

“…she was easily the most enthralling creature he’d ever met. And gazing into her guileless eyes . . . it was to drown in pools of liquid sunshine.” 

It was extremely easy to get lost inside the pages of this book, the storytelling was spectacular. Loved how the first half of the book was dedicated for Evangeline and Declan to get to know one another. And despite Evangeline couldn’t deny her obvious attraction for Declan, she also had no trouble to place herself first and set boundaries when necessary. We also get to experience life at court and learn our way through Declan’s castle where we get to meet several new characters!

“Acknowledging something only gave it more power, and pain was no different from any other emotion.”

One of my favorite secondary characters was Agnes Barre, Evangeline’s mother. She adopted Evangeline when she was just a child and cares deeply for her. She’s a powerful mage and a talented apothecarist, yet her unyielding love and honesty towards her daughter was what I found most admirable and it left me wishing we could see more of their mother and daughter relationship. And then there was Mailin, she’s Evangeline’s first friend upon entering Declan’s castle and later becomes her mentor. She was an amazing friend & confidant for Evangeline.

I’m really looking forward to continue reading Evangeline’s & Declan’s story in the sequel! I highly recommend to all fantasy romance readers out there!

Why you need to read The Fire in the Glass

‘To know others is intelligence. To know one’s self is wisdom. Mastering others is strength. Mastering one’s self is power.’

I knew it…I knew I was going to love The Fire in the Glass the moment I finished the first chapter. A historical fantasy with spellbinding mystery and two intriguing MCs, it was simply unputdownable! I was equally charmed by Lily and Strangford, the more I read about them, their powers (known here as charismatics) and their alliance to save Lily’s friend Estelle from a “spiritualist vampire”, I found myself lost in its pages! Add in a dash of romance and a sprinkle of paranormal, The Fire in the Glass is a must read!!

There would be no changing what she saw in her visions. It wasn’t a gift or a responsibility. It was a curse, her own private torture.

Now, in this historical fantasy, charisma is define as: “One that refers not to attractions of physique or character, but to something else entirely—a divinely-conferred extraordinary power. From the Greek khárisma—a gift of grace.” Which creates the term charismatics ! And as I mentioned before, this particular people are born with extraordinary gifts, for example Lilly has visions of the future. How awesome is that?! We even get to enter into a secret society that is somewhat a refuge for said people since some of them face unfair treatment, which was infuriating. I found them fascinating, I just wanted to know more about them!!

It was an escape, and it was futile. What she was running from could not be outpaced. That was the trouble with the future.

The fourth and final book, What the Ravens Sing, just released, so this is the perfect opportunity to binge read the series!! And I promise this first book in The Charismatics series is perfect for all the historical fantasy lovers out there!

Why you need to read The Direction of the Wind

If you are looking for a heart-aching read that will make you FEEL, then this is it. Author Mansi Shah did a good job at creating flawed characters who will make you go through many emotions in a short period of time. From anger, betrayal, hurt, and ultimately a sense of understanding. This is the story about a daughter who, after losing her father, discovers that the mother she thought had died when she was a child, is actually alive… she just so happened to have abandoned her to pursue her dreams as an artist in Paris.

The interesting aspect about The Direction of the Wind is that we get two alternating storylines, that of Sophie in 2019 (aka current time) and her mother’s POV in 1998, narrating from the moment she decided to leave her husband and daughter. While I was pretty angry at Nita (Sophie’s mother), her side of the story was the kind that hooks you. I really wanted to follow her life to see if the emotional damage she caused Sophie was worth it. If she managed to achieve her dreams. And ultimately, to see in what kind of place Sophie would find her once they meet in current times, since Sophie sets out to Paris in search of her whereabouts after facing her own dilemma of an arranged marriage she does not want.

Upon Nita’s arrival to Paris in 1998, it is clear that dreams are not enough for survival, particularly in a foreign country and with no other aide but your own wits and skills. Plagued with self-doubts but with determination, Nita proceeds to deal with her new life and the struggles of getting a job, while still running away from the threads that hold her back in India. In a way, I did understand what moved Nita to make this decision, though I couldn’t help but feel for the pain that Sophie and her dad endured. And thus, the book continues with themes of regret and the sacrifices made, at the expense of hurting those that love us the most, as well as family duties & expectations.

Overall, The Direction of the Wind is the kind of novel that will make you go on a rollercoaster of emotions, following characters on their journeys to self-discovery.

Why you need to read Moonlight & Fire

Moonlight & Fire is a charming fantasy romance set in magical lands with medieval vibes and character driven storyline! Meet Lunielle, a sheltered princess from the Kingdom of Evenar that involuntarily sets off into a quest to save her people from doom. And it is all because of a fateful prophecy that claims she will be the savior of her kingdom. The problem is she has no idea where to start.

I’m rather fond of Lunielle, in the beginning of the story we get introduced to a young woman that lived blissfully unaware to the dire circumstances of her kingdom. But after she gets transported to another magical land, she starts to wake up from her privilege life and enters into cruel reality. It was quite interesting to see her grow as a character and yes she has a lot to learn but also willing to try her best. And let me say she does get help along the way. Meeting Aurion was definitely a strike of good luck, they couldn’t be a more perfect match!

Aurion is loyal, resourceful and has magical abilities that could match Lunielle’s. Reading about their growing affection towards each other was one of my favorite aspects of this story. But I also want to mention Ember, a living spirit born of tempered Sun-fire that is Lunielle’s companion and reminded me of Calcifer from Howl’s Moving Castle, except that Ember is friendlier and I found it super adorable!

Moonlight & Fire was exactly what I needed to read at this moment. I felt like I was reading a Disney fairytale which I found very comforting and before I knew it, I had gobbled up the entire book. In this story you will find quests, adventure, the chosen one trope, magic, a botanical garden and a sweet romance story that will oftentimes make you smile. I’m eager to see what comes next in The Fallen Princess series!

Why you need to read Trailer Park Trickster

It’s been a couple of years since I last met Adam in White Trash Warlock (book 1), but as soon as I started reading Trailer Park Trickster, I was easily drawn back into his life. (Read my review of White Trash Warlock here).

Adam is not powerful, he is an underdog, even in the “magical” world and I just feel so much for him, particularly the family trauma he has had to endured. Book 2 picks up right after the events of White Trash Warlock and Adam is back for Sue’s funeral. Upon his arrival, he finds is mom and sister already taking over Sue’s mobile home, the place he got to call home after his brother had attempted to “cure” his psychic abilities at a ward. They had stripped the trailer from most of Sue’s belongings, and Adam has to deal with several mixed feelings: from loss to anger, once again opening up old wounds. But besides it all, there’s also the need to figure out what really happened to Sue and why his dad is potentially now alive as a warlock.

On the other side of the veil, we get political intrigue with FAE as Vic (Adam’s love interest), is dragged into it. Vic is now a reaper and his role as one is one I am dying to follow more. There’s also so much angst due to Adam and Vic being separated as they are both caught up in the different realms, not to mention of Adam’s habit of pushing people away.

Overall, Trailer Park Trickster is a great follow up to a world that keeps on revealing its secrets, and I cannot wait to continue on with book 3!

Why you need to read Heroes of the Empire: The Cavalier

I was fascinated by Heroes of the Empire!! This is the first book in a YA Fantasy series about a world that is afflicted by war due to the selfishness of the people in power. Absolutely in love with the wordbuilding, magic and the overall vibes of this story!

You will love Natassa! She’s the princess of the Karalik Empire and even though many might think she lives a carefree life full of luxury, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Living as a prisoner in her own home, Natassa’s goal is to one day be free and possibly help the victims of the war. And there’s a prophecy from a forbidden book that gives her hope which promises a hero that will save them all! Clever, resourceful and with a rebel heart, Natassa is a lovable heroine and I just kept hoping for her to succeed!

And then there is Velamir, a skillful warrior that lives with resentment from all he has lost because of the war. He has lived for several years in a Chishman Academy (a school for warriors) and the time has come for him to go on a mission along with three other members. However, as he travels the land, he’s starting to question his believes and fears that everything he has believed in turns out to be false. Velamir is such a kind and loyal friend, I completely understood his anger towards the system everyone is forced to live in. I loved his character development, I cannot wait to see what’s in store for him in the sequel!

The long cast of characters was something I was thrilled about in Heroes of the Empire. While we get to read most of the book in Natassa’s & Velamir’s POVs, we also get a glimpse of some other characters’ thoughts such as Jax ( Velamir’s best friend), Thornsten (Natssa’s brother) and even a few of the evil people’s POVs. I truly enjoy reading books with multiple points of views and I felt that in this particular story the author did an excellent job!

I’m completely hooked with the Heroes of the Empire series! In this first installment you will find: unlikely allies, traveling, magic, a joust tournament, spies, sword fighting, doppelgangers and an action packed story! It left me with a mess of emotions plus the ending was so good. I need book two ASAP!

Ambience Playlist for Heroes of the Empire: The Cavalier

For our creative stop, I wanted to share with you the the playlist I was listening to while reading Heroes of the Empire: The Cavalier. In this case, I chose ambience playlists that I found on YouTube. I listened to three different soundtracks with fantasy & magical vibes that I found very comforting while reading this book! Reading while listening instrumental music themed around the book is one of my favorite pastimes, it just makes the experience even better (in my opinion).  So without further ado, here they are!!

First playlist: This soundtrack immediately caught my attention! I chose this one for the soothing and nostalgic sounds that I feel worked perfectly fot the beginning of the story!

Second playlist: Then I chose a relaxed fantasy tavern! I started listening to this soundtrack when Velamir started his first mission as a recent academy graduate and one of his first stops was a tavern. Loved this one!

Third playlist: And for the last playlist I chose this Ambient Fantasy Music. As we get deeper into the story, both Natassa & Velamir turn bolder and daring so I felt that this soundtrack added to the mystery/darkness of the book!
