Today, sailor, explorer, and researcher Matt Rutherford departs Greenland in an attempt to become the first person in history to complete a solo, nonstop, unassisted circumnavigation of the Arctic Ocean.
His route covers more than 10,000 miles through some of the most remote and unforgiving waters on the planet. Along the way, he’ll sail the Russian Arctic coast, transit the Northwest Passage, and battle whatever conditions the Arctic decides to throw at him.
To avoid collisions with ice and other hazards, he’ll sleep in short 20-30 minute intervals for months.
No crew.
No support vessel.
No outside assistance.
Matt gives himself a 75% chance of completing the voyage.
The expedition is supported by Ocean Research Project, whose mission focuses on Arctic climate research, marine science, and ocean exploration.
This is one of the most ambitious sailing expeditions of our time, and we’ll be following along as the journey unfolds.
