The stars of the number-one-rated daytime soap opera are returning to Toronto this spring. Y&R cast members Kate Linder (Esther Valentine) and Bryton James (Devon Winters) are gearing up for the Kate Linder & Friends Tea in the Garden, a special charity event taking place on Sunday, May 31, in Concord, Ontario.

They will be joined by co-stars Christian LeBlanc (Michael Baldwin), Sean Dominic (Nate Hastings), and Michael Graziadei (Daniel Romalotti), with Global News anchor Candace Daniel serving as the emcee.

Canadians have always shared a special connection with The Young and the Restless. Because episodes air a day earlier in Canada than in the United States, Toronto fans often watch the show before the actors even get a chance to see it themselves.

“Well, it’s kind of amazing, actually, because the people in Toronto see the show twice,” Linder explained. “They see today’s show [on CBS] and then they see tomorrow’s show [on Global], which [Bryton] and I haven’t even seen yet.”

Linder joked that fans will sometimes even give her a heads-up on her own schedule: “Sometimes when I’m not sure if I’m going to be on that day or not, I’ll ask them, ‘Was I on today?’ and they go, “Yeah, yeah.’ Okay, so then I know I’m on tomorrow here [in the U.S.].”

Over the years, the Kate’s charity teas in Toronto have become a multi-generational affair, just like how many of us watch the soaps.

“I remember people who were kids growing up the first time, and now they’re grown up and still coming to and bringing their little ones,” James noted.

“Yeah, it really gets me when I see someone in there holding a baby in their arms,” Linder agreed. “They say, ‘I’ve been watching you since I was this young.”

Giving Back with Million Dollar Smiles

This year, the event will benefit Million Dollar Smiles, a Vaughan-based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children and families facing life-threatening illnesses and special needs.

Linder expressed her appreciation that the organization ensures the money raised goes directly to the families who need it. The Y&R cast members are also generously donating their time to the event for no fee.

“They’re volunteering their time, and all my [castmates] are so generous to come there, and no one’s being paid,” Linder said. “That makes me really happy that we’re able to help them and all the money gets to the people who really need it right now.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a live auction featuring exclusive experiences and memorabilia:

·      The Ultimate Y&R Set Tour: The auction features an exclusive package that includes airfare and a hotel stay for two, culminating in a tour of the closed Los Angeles set of The Young and the Restless. “We have one thing that you cannot get anywhere else unless you’re there,” Linder revealed. “It is a tour of [Genoa City]… It’s closed to the public, so you get to see scenes being taped, and they take everyone to wardrobe and sometimes hair and makeup, and they see all the sets!”

·      Exclusive Artwork: Christian LeBlanc is providing a highly limited painting for the auction. The artwork holds a deep personal meaning, featuring a depiction of Katherine Chancellor’s (the late Jeanne Cooper) tea set alongside an orchid, which was the favourite flower of Linder’s late husband, Ron.

·      Script Reading and Q&A: The cast typically auctions off scripts and performs live scene readings on stage during the event, alongside a fan Q&A session.

Behind the Scenes and Future Storylines

During our chat, Linder and James also pulled back the curtain on recent behind-the-scenes developments in Genoa City.

With the announcement that Sally McDonald is taking over as sole Executive Producer, James assures fans that the show is in excellent hands. “She’s been our co-ep for quite some time now, so we couldn’t be in better hands. She knows the show inside and out… and the fans should feel very confident that you’ll see that in the stories to come,” James said.

Their co-star, Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe Mitchell) has also stepped into the director’s chair recently, earning high praise from James for her innate understanding of the actors’ process.

“She’s been fantastic. Seems like she’s hit the ground running and is, you know, one of our favourites off the bat,” James shared. “And mainly because she, you know, being an actor, becoming a director really understands what we go through and [our] process.”

Fans have also been thrilled to see the return of former cast members Shemar Moore (Malcolm Winters) and Vivica A. Fox (Stephanie Simmons). While James remained tight-lipped about their long-term status, he teased that their presence would continue to be felt as the Winters family expanded.

“I don’t know if I can tell if they’re still around or not… but yeah, I mean, I think it’s a storyline that has blossomed and is going to carry on down the road, especially now that we have a new member of the Winters family,” James says regarding the revelation that Holden (Nathan Owens) is Malcolm’s son with Stephanie.  

On screen, daytime veteran Lauren Koslow (Kate on Days of our Lives) has temporarily stepped in to play Jill Abbott for a handful of episodes while Jess Walton is unable to tape. Linder previously worked alongside Koslow during her stint as Lindsay Wells from 1984 to 1986. “Lauren’s fabulous. Of course, we all, you know, we all wish the best for Jess and look forward to the day that she’s able to return,” Linder expressed.

As for what’s next for their characters, James has a pitch: he wants Esther to become the live-in nanny for Devon and Abby’s (Melissa Ordway) son, Dominic. “To have someone like Esther be the live-in nanny, it’s someone he really trusts in the family to always have eyes on their son,” James suggested after his on-screen son was recently kidnapped.

Linder enthusiastically agreed with the idea. “And then you can make sure you’re all fed, right, too,” she laughed. Because Esther owns half of the Chancellor mansion, she reminded, we all agreed that Esther essentially belongs on the grounds anyway.

 Linder encourages fans who want to see this or another storyline come to fruition to make their voices heard. “If there are certain things that viewers want to see, they really do need to go online (cbs.com/showfeedback) and let them know,” sur urged.

“The fans have a lot more power than they realize.”

While BEONDTV+ – the holder of the soap’s international streaming rights – initially brought the series to the Plex app earlier this year (which is also home to The Bold and the Beautiful channel), this move to Pluto TV marks a significant expansion. If you grew up in the 905, you know Coliseum 10. It’s the former Famous Players cinema across from Square One, which is now a Cineplex. The legendary theatre where many dreams were born, popcorn was oversalted, and if you’re Paulo Costanzo (Designated Survivor, Royal Pains), it’s where you once stood at the front of a theatre after the screening of your first film, Road Trip and accidentally swore in a room full of teenagers.

“I thought it was an R-rated movie!” Costanzo laughs over our recent call from his home in New York. “I got up, and I had them going, but then a staff member ran up and told me I had to stop swearing because it was rated AA.”

But in a parallel universe, Costanzo wouldn’t have been the star on the screen; he would have been the one tearing your ticket at the door. During his teenage years in Brampton, the actor faced a career crossroads – “I applied to work at Coliseum 10 in Mississauga and I applied to work at Red Lobster in Brampton,” he reveals. “I got both of them, and it’s one of my biggest regrets: I took Red Lobster because it was closer to my house.”

He lasted only three weeks. “I couldn’t stand the smell. It was just so bad. I always wish that I would have worked at Coliseum 10 instead.”

It’s a full-circle moment for the Canadian actor, who is currently trading the suburban sprawl of Peel Region for the high-stakes (and high-absurdity) world of international soccer in the new BBC series Twenty Twenty Six.

The Art of the Scripted “Uhm”

A sequel to W1A and Twenty Twelve, the series sees Hugh Bonneville’s (Downton Abbey; Paddington) Ian Fletcher heading to Miami to help organize the 2026 FIFA World Cup – a tournament the show hilariously can’t name for legal reasons. Costanzo stars as Nick, the VP of Business and Legal Affairs, an American lawyer who serves as the show’s foul-mouthed reality check.

Nick is essentially the human embodiment of the “Are you seeing this?” face. In fact, during the show’s press junket in London, when the cast was asked which character they would play if they weren’t their own, the answer was unanimous: everyone wanted to be Nick.

“There’s something fun about being the person who’s just always calling out… what the fuck are you talking [about],” Costanzo says. I had a lot of fun playing that role. I know people like this, so it was easy.”

For those worried about jumping into the third installment of a franchise, Costanzo insists that newcomers shouldn’t be intimidated. You don’t need to have binged the previous series to appreciate the chaos – but do try to check it out after!

“It’s not like other shows,” he explains. “Once you understand the wavelength of the show, you’ll be like, ‘Wait a minute. This is different, and this is special.’ It’s crafted by someone who is a genius.”

While the show is a mockumentary, don’t expect the loose, improvisational feel of The Office. Working with writer/director John Morton is more like performing a symphony than a sitcom.

“There was no latitude for improvisation or even changing a period,” Costanzo explains. It’s written like music. If your line was ‘Yeah, well,’ you had to say ‘Yeah, well.’ If you just say ‘Yeah,’ everyone would stop and go, ‘What, where was the well?’”

The “Josie” Renaissance

For a generation, Costanzo is synonymous with the Y2K heyday of teen cinema. Between Road Trip and 30 Days and 40 Nights, he was a staple in the era – but it’s his role in 2001’s Josie and the Pussycats that is currently seeing a cult-classic resurgence. Costanzo himself rewatched it on the free streaming app Tubi.

While it starred Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson, “it was like the biggest bomb of the year,” he says frankly.

Despite the film’s now-celebrated satire of consumerism, Costanzo admits that at the time, he “never really appreciated Josie and the Pussycats” when the film was released. “My part was heavily cut out of it,” he says, noting that many of his scenes with on-screen sister Missy Pyle didn’t make the theatrical runtime. “I think for an actor, that’s kind of tough.”

However, a recent rewatch with a first-time viewer changed his perspective. “I truly appreciated it for the first time. It’s so prevalent now. It’s crazy actually how much it [holds up].” Reflecting on the ensemble, he adds, “Parker Posey, Alan Cumming… the cast was insane. Like, stacked. I’m really happy that I rewatched it.”

The Coolidge Connection

Costanzo’s career has often put him in the orbit of comedic titans, including a two-season stint on the Friends spin-off Joey. While history (and many Friends fans) might have looked past the series, it paired Costanzo with a pre-Renaissance Jennifer Coolidge.

“She’s able to conjure comedy out of knighting,” he says of the White Lotus star. “As a person, she was the opposite [of her character] – so sweet, so genuine. She’d turn it on and make you laugh for a second, and then she’d be like, ‘Anyway, I did this thing with my dry cleaner…’”

Coming Home

While Twenty Twenty Six was filmed in Wembley, the Canadian connection remains strong. Costanzo’s co-star Stephen Culkin plays the representative from Canada, occasionally leaning on Costanzo for guidance on the accent – though Paulo was more than happy to play the American making fun of the Canadian for once. “That was a funny role reversal,” he notes. “That was pleasant.”

As for a return to the 905? Costanzo hasn’t decided if he’ll be back for the actual World Cup games yet, but we’re putting the call out to Cineplex: get this man back to the Coliseum 10 for a screening – maybe for the 25th anniversary of Josie and the Pussycats? Just keep the mic away from him if there are any kids in the front row.

Last Thursday, April 16, the TIFF Next Wave Film Festival transformed the Lightbox into a masterclass in chaotic freshman energy with an advanced screening of Roommates. While the latest feature from Canadian director Chandler Levack (I Like Movies, Mile End Kicks) nails the specific, cringe-including claustrophobia of dorm life, the screening confirmed that the film’s real secret weapon is a cast list that reads like a brilliant fever dream.

Beyond the lead performances by Sadie Sandler (Happy Gilmore 2)and Chloe East (Heretic), the film – which hit Netflix on April 17 – is packed with “how did they get them?” moments. Between a scene-stealing turn from Steve Buscemi and, supporting SNL players, and a hilarious appearance by Megan Thee Stallion, Levack has managed to turn a story about twin XL beds and bad decisions into a star-studded event.

Following the screening Levack and Canadian star Billy Bryk joined a virtual Q&A to deconstruct the making of the film. Here are the highlights from that conversation:

The Sadie Sandler Factor

While Sandler anchors the film as the introverted, architecture-obsessed Devon, her influence extended far beyond her performance. Levack revealed that Sandler actually served as an associate music producer, curating the film’s “mixtape” soundtrack from her own personal playlists. The result is a savvy collection of needle drops – including Alex G and Blood Orange – that Levack says were designed to reflect the authentic sonic landscape of modern college life.

Subverting the “Manic Pixie Dream Boyfriend”

Bryk, who plays Devon’s love interest Michael, discussed the film’s clever subversion of rom-com tropes. Rather than a standard leading man, Michael is framed as a “manic pixie dream boyfriend for a normal girl” – he’s funny, he can “cook a little bit,” and he seems aspirational until the red flags start flying. Bryk noted that the character’s “quirky” façade eventually gives way to a less-than-sweet reality, complete with the realization that he lives in a “frisbee frat house” and moonlights as a school mascot.

Capturing the “Dorm Anxiety”

Levack described the film’s unique tone as an exploration of social claustrophobia. This tension is most evident in the score by composers Hays and Ryan Holladay (Weapons, Resident Evil), which was intentionally infused with elements of anxiety to elevate the comedy and mirror the frantic, high-stakes feeling of trying to make friends in a new environment.

No Easy Resolutions

One of the film’s most refreshing choices is its refusal to grant Devon and her roommate Celeste (East) a traditional “make-up” scene. Bryk and Levack discussed how the script, penned by Saturday Night Live’s Jimmy Fowlie and Ceara O’Sullivan, avoids the “everyone learns a lesson” cliché in favour of a more chaotic, realistic ending.

Roommates is now streaming on Netflix. If you’re looking for a film that validates your worst freshman-year paranoia – while featuring a legendary supporting cast including Natasha Lyonne, Nick Kroll and Carol Kane – this is your next watch.

March was a bit of a blur, defined less by the outside world and more by the slow, steady rhythm of post-surgery recovery. While my body was busy healing, my screen became a much-needed window into other lives – ranging from the high-stakes chaos of high finance to the sun-drenched absurdity of South Florida.

This past month's watchlist was the perfect companion, offering a mix of comforting returning favourites and some truly stellar new premieres that made the couch-bound days feel a lot more like an adventure.

Here is a look at what kept me occupied during my recovery.

Below Deck Down Under

Between The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City ladies bringing high-altitude delusions to sea level and Chef Ben treating the galley like a culinary combat zone, the crew’s tangled love lives are somehow still the messiest things on board. It’s a five-star disaster where the only thing more over-the-top than the Housewives’ demands is the sheer audacity of the yachties’ boatmance drama.

Below Deck Down Under Season 4 continues to stream on Hayu.

The Valley: Persian Style

Even without the Shahs of Sunset backstory, it’s clear that these "suburban" lives are fueled by decades of unresolved resentment and enough Persian tea to drown a cul-de-sac.

The first season is a fascinating, chaotic introduction to a group where the Persian tea is always scalding and the only thing more fragile than the marriages is the peace during a desert trip.

Tommy and Reza are a bridge that burned, collapsed, and was then salted for good measure. Fingers crossed for a Season 2 that explores MJ’s divorce from Tommy.

The Valley: Persian Style Season 1 is streaming on Hayu.

Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette

The controversial series is a visual feast of ‘90s minimalism, trading deep substance for the high-gloss perfection of Carolyn’s (Sarah Pidgeon) sleep neutrals and John’s (Canadian Paul Anthony Kelly) signature hair.

It’s a nostalgic “time capsule” of Manhattan elite that feels more like an editorial from Vogue (or Details!), punctuated by a killer alt-rock soundtrack – from Mazzy Star to The Stone Roses – that makes the inevitable tragedy look and sound undeniably chic.

Memorable performances from the finale from Constance Zimmer (Ann Marie Messina)and Grace Gummer (Caroline Kennedy). Fans even want a series centred around Alessandro Nivola’s take on Calvin Klein.

Industry

The fourth season is a brutal high-wire act where Sir Henry Muck’s (Kit Harington) privileged world finally collapses into a drug-fueled, depressive spiral, leaving Yasmin (Marisa Abela) to trade her last shred of morality for the protection of an aristocratic name while Whitney (Max Minghella) and Rishi (Sagar Radia) spiral through their own frantic, high-stakes failures.

While the "Tender" empire implodes, Harper (Myha’la) completes her transition into a corporate phantom, weaponizing a chilling detachment that reveals her true priorities.
