For five decades, Dr. Marlena Evans has been a constant, comforting presence in the homes of millions. Throughout iconic romances, deep grief, and literal demonic possessions, Deidre Hall has guided Days of our Lives fans through it all.

As she celebrates her staggering 50th anniversary on the beloved soap opera, Hall admits the milestone still feels surreal. “It’s just one of those miracles that I get to enjoy,” she shared. “I still feel this little sense of relief when my keycard opens the gate at work, and I get to go in and play with people that I love, enjoy and respect, and that it’s been 50 years is… it’s just beyond.”

Despite being the undeniable face of the series for multiple generations, Hall is quick to deflect the praise onto her colleagues. “I don’t think of it that way because I think of us as a complete ensemble,” she insisted. “Nobody does it alone… If I’m off my mark, I see my cameraman move his camera over a little bit, or if I’m out of my light, I think, ‘Oh, wait, okay, I better find my light here and help them out.’ It’s such a team effort… Glad to be part of the show. So proud of it. And as for the face of, we’ve a lot of Faces of Days.”

The Ryan Gosling Connection

Marlena’s influence stretches far beyond Salem! Canadian actor Ryan Gosling recently cited Hall as his “OG acting inspiration” and enthusiastically accepted her open invitation to visit the DAYS set.

Has the Barbie star made his way to Burbank yet?

“That stinker has not been there yet,” Hall laughed, acknowledging his busy schedule filming and promoting his latest films. “Everybody is so excited to meet him and to see him. What a lovely reputation he’s got… He’s just a lovely, generous man.”

When pitching a potential storyline for Gosling – perhaps as a patient in Marlena’s psychiatric chair who believes he is actually Ken, reuniting with the first daytime icon to get her own Barbie doll – Hall was fully on board. “I’m writing this down,” she said, loving the idea of a beach-sequence crossover.

Canadian Kindness

Gosling isn’t Hall’s only fond connection to Canada. The actress elaborated on a previously shared trip to Toronto (where she filmed a guest spot on an upcoming Star Trek spin-off series) and was proud to say that the city’s famous hospitality was on full display. After getting lost while out shopping, Hall asked two teenage girls for directions to her hotel. Instead of just pointing the way, the girls insisted on walking “the lost American” back to her accommodations themselves.

“I went, ‘Oh boy, there it is. That’s what everybody talks about,’” Hall said of the warm encounter.

Surviving the Salem Stalker and Demonic Possession

Looking back at her wildest storylines, Hall discussed the iconic “Salem Stalker” arc from over 20 years ago, where Marlena was brainwashed into believing she was a serial killer. The show’s writers intentionally kept the twist a secret from her so it wouldn’t impact her day-to-day performance.

When Marlena eventually “awoke” on the mysterious island during that storyline, the first person she saw was beloved matriarch Alice Horton, played by the late Frances Reid. Hall noted Reid commanded immense respect on set. “Frances was not the person you think she is. Frances was not our little, little apron lady that made donuts,” Hall recalled. “She was a force. And boy, you didn’t show up on her stage without being prepared and honouring the system and the genre.”

The physical demands of the supernatural storyline were intensely real. For Marlena’s famous first levitation scene, the studio cleared the floor, turned off the monitors, and brought in stunt professionals. “In that moment, as the choir sang, I lifted off the bed,” Hall noted.

She also recalled being called into the producers’ office right before Christmas by producer Tom Langan and head writer Jim Reilly. “They said, ‘We wanted to tell you that you’re the person doing everything… burning up Christmas trees and going after people,” she remembered. “And then somebody said, ‘Because you’re possessed by the devil!’”

The fans’ investment in the plots was just as intense. Hall recalled the time when her character was seemingly killed off by the Salem Strangler in 1982, sparking a real-life picket line outside the NBC studios in New York. TO quell the uproar without spoiling the storyline, Hall put on a pink scarf and walked outside to meet the protestors. The victim would turn out to be Marlena’s sister, Samantha, played by Hall’s real-life sister Andrea.

A Lifetime of Fan Connections

Hall has experienced countless memorable interactions with viewers, but one penned correspondence stands out. She recalled receiving a letter from H. Weston Taylor, a fan from Chester, Pennsylvania, who shared that she reminded him of his late wife.

“We began writing letters back and forth,” Hall shared. She eventually travelled to visit him when he was 96 years old, and they spent the afternoon sitting on his porch. “We corresponded a great deal at that point,” she noted, sharing that she even spoke to him on the phone shortly before he passed away. “I have his letters and that, to me, is an extraordinary fan relationship that I will always have.”

Processing Grief On and Off Screen

The profound connection between the actors and the audience is something Hall feels deeply, especially when looking back at iconic “Jarlena” moments with her late scene partner, Drake Hogestyn (John Black).

Reflecting on the famous scene where Marlena and John (believed to be Roman at the time) reunited on the pier, Hall noted how intertwined the cast’s performances are with the viewers’ emotions. “Knowing when we shot it, what the audience would be feeling, which is a big part of what we do… I can feel the audience’s heart pounding,” Hall recalled, when [Hogestyn] did that slow turn and his look and his reach.”

As DAYS aired John’s on-screen memorial last year, the emotional weight has provided a sense of catharsis for viewers navigating their own losses – much like the comfort it brought me following the passing of my own father.

For Hall, the reality of Hogestyn’s absence is still difficult to process. “The truth is that I don’t think of him as gone,” she explained. Because the cast only works a few days a week, she approaches work with the mindset of, “Oh, Drake’s not here today.”

She noted that co-stars like Eric Martsolf (Brady), Alison Sweeney (Sami) and Christie Clark (Carrie) share in this sentiment. “How can he be gone? Drake. I mean, that’s just absolutely impossible,” she said. “So, we just say ‘Hmm,’ and we move forward.”

Stepping Outside of Salem

While she’ll forever be Marlena to us fans, Hall has been enjoying recent opportunities to step into other massive fandoms. She recently appeared on the acclaimed comedy Hacks – donning a Brady Pub apron for her first appearance – and is set to make an upcoming visit to the Star Trek universe.

Working on primetime sets has been a jarring, yet luxurious, change of pace compared to the rapid-fire world of daytime television. While DAYS shoots well over an hour of television every single day, primetime shows might spend over a week shooting a single hour.

Even with her recent ventures into other beloved shows, Hall’s heart remains firmly rooted in Salem. After 50 years of unforgettable memories, her daily joy still comes from stepping onto the DAYS set. “I love this show. I love that I get to get there every day and with the people with whom I get to play, and not just the actors, but the makeup and hair people, and my cameraman and our directors. I love them so much.”

It is a rule as old as the show itself: Expect the unexpected!

Two years ago, June 27, 2024, was a dark day for Canadian television fans as Corus Entertainment officially pulled the plug on Big Brother Canada after 12 incredible seasons, leaving a massive diary-room-sized void in our spring viewing schedules. For The TV Watercooler, I had been there for every single backdoor, double eviction, and slop-induced meltdown since Season 1 premiered on Slice back in 2013. For myself, having watched the U.S. Big Brother since the beginning and covering it professionally since 2012, saying goodbye to our homegrown version felt like the end of an era.

But in the world of reality TV, you’re never truly evicted until the check clears.

In a blockbuster announcement today, Bell Media revealed they have officially become the new Head of Household. Following a major deal with Banijay Rights, Bell Media is reviving Big Brother Canada for a brand-new season slated for Spring 2027, where it will air across CTV and stream on Crave.

But that is only half of the story. In a seismic media shakeup, Bell Media has also stripped Corus Entertainment’s Global TV of the rights to the American flagship series. Starting in Summer 2027, the Julie Chen Moonves-hosted Big Brother U.S.A. will leave its lifelong Canadian home at Global – where it has aired since its very inception in 2000 – and make its new home on CTV and Crave.

A Massive Media Power Move

The writing was on the wall earlier this month, when Corus announced that the upcoming 2026 summer season of Big Brother (Season 28) would be the last to air on Global. With Corus struggling to maintain its footprint amid shifting audiences and financial constraints, Bell Media has swooped in to consolidate the entire Big Brother universe under one Canadian roof.

Justin Stockman, Bell Media’s Vice-President of Global Content, noted that competition reality formats like The Traitors and Love Island absolutely “kill it” on streaming while maintaining massive live-viewing numbers on traditional television. By pairing CTV’s broadcast reach with Crave’s streaming power, Bell Media is betting big on the staying power of the world’s ultimate social experiment.

A New House, a New House, and a New Production Team

When Big Brother Canada returns in 2027, it’s going to look and feel completely different. Bell Media is introducing a creative overhaul to ensure the show is sustainable for the long run:

·      The Move to Montreal: Production is moving out of Toronto. The new season will be produced by Entourage, the Quebec production powerhouse behind the massive smash hit Big Brother Célébrités (which brought in nearly 4.7 million views on Crave and Noovo this past winter) and The Traitors Canada. The previous incarnation of BBCAN was produced by Insight Productions.

·      A Sustainable Set: Rather than building and updating a multi-million dollar set from scratch in Toronto every single year, the new version will utilize the pre-existing, state-of-the-art Big Brother Célébrités infrastructure in Montreal.

·      A New Host: In a major changing of the guard, Canadian television personality and CTV’s The Social co-host Andrea Bain has been named the new host of Big Brother Canada. Bain steps into the iconic shoes of Arisa Cox, who masterfully and lovingly guided the series through its first 12 seasons and became a definitive voice and champion of the franchise.

Binge the Back Catalogue

For the superfans who have been desperate to rewatch classic BBCAN seasons (including the infamous final vote in the first season or Ika shredding the houseguests’ letters from home), Bell Media has answered your prayers. As part of the acquisition, the entire 12-season back catalogue of Big Brother Canada will be dropped onto Crave, allowing fans to stream old episodes alongside the expansive French-language Big Brother Célébrités library.

The TV Watercooler Verdict

Having spent the last 14 years analyzing veto meetings, interviewing evictees, and tracking alliances, I cannot overstate how monumental this news is for the Canadian media landscape. While it will certainly take some time to adjust to a new host and a new production style, the fact that Big Brother Canada is alive and well is a massive victory for Canadian crew members, storytellers, and fans across the country.

Casting details and official premiere dates for the Spring 2027 revival will be released in the coming months. Rest assured, The TV Watercooler will be locked into the live feeds – and, fingers crossed, will bring you exclusive coverage every single step of the way.

Daytime powerhouse Stacy Haiduk is pulling off a feat only a soap opera legend could handle – appearing on two soaps at the same time!

In addition to appearing on Days of our Lives as the fierce Kristen DiMera (and the eccentric Susan Banks), Haiduk has officially stepped back into the fragile, unpredictable shoes of Patty Williams on The Young and the Restless after nearly a decade away.

In the latest episode of The TV Watercooler podcast, Haiduk sat down with me to dish on slipping back into Genoa City, the emotional toll of playing two of daytime’s most isolated antagonists, and whether a certain taxidermied feline friend might make a cameo.

Slipping Back Into Patty’s Shoes (and Leaving Kristen Behind – for Now!)

Returning to a character after ten years is no small task – especially when you’ve been busy playing a completely different villain on another show. Haiduk admits that transitioning from DAYS’ calculating Kristen DiMera back to Y&R’s vulnerable Patty Williams took some adjusting.

“Slipping back into it took a little bit of a time frame for me, because Kristen handles things much differently than Patty does… To me, Patty has more innocence than Kristen. Kristen is like just going after whatever she needs to do, whereas Patty is a little more, I think, innocent.”

This time around, Haiduk wanted to show a version of Patty who has done some growing up.

“I wanted, this time around, to make her not so childlike because in the past, she was so desperate… I wanted to see her grow up. Maybe the meds and the work that she did with her therapist really did make a difference?”  

The Loneliness of the Daytime Antagonist

While fans love to watch characters like Patty and Kristen stir up trouble, constantly playing the town pariah can take an unexpected psychological toll on an actor. Haiduk opened up about the heavy “headspace” required to play characters who are universally disliked by everyone on screen.

“You take it with you – what everybody’s saying about you. ‘You’re horrible. You’re crazy. You’re stupid.’ … It really does hurt because it’s [about] this character that you’re playing on a daily basis, and you come in and think, ‘Oh, I’m going to bring light and love and it’s going to be exciting.’ But then the words… words hurt.”

She clarifies that while the cast itself is incredibly close, the character’s isolation is palpable.

“[It’s] not lonely in the sense because I get along with the actors, but the headspace of the character? Yeah, it does get very, very lonely because you want somebody on your team and just say, ‘Hey, you know, we love you. We love you.’”

Honouring Eileen Davidson’s Legacy in Salem

Before returning to Patty last month, Haiduk has spent the last several years navigating the drama in Salem on Days of our Lives. Stepping into the dual roles of Kristen DiMera and Susan Banks meant taking over characters famously originated by her Y&R co-star Eileen Davidson (Ashley Abbott) – a blueprint Haiduk admits gave her serious nerves at the start.

“I remember getting that call from my agent, and he’s saying, ‘There’s these roles they want you to do on Days of our Lives.’ … and he said, ‘Oh yeah, Kristen DiMera and Susan Banks.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, shit.’ I was like, I remember Eileen telling me about this and oh God, can I do [it]? I was so nervous.”

Despite the initial pressure, Haiduk completely made the characters her own, anchoring some of the show’s heaviest emotional beats.

“I had a ball. I had an absolute ball… Also, then me being about to stay on that show for a while, the stories got deeper. Her character got more involved. She got the child that she’s always wanted. I feel very, very blessed to have gotten to do that.”

Navigating Genoa City Without Paul

Historically, no matter how wild things got for Patty on Y&R, she always had her brother, former Police Chief Paul Williams, in her corner. With Doug Davidson no longer on the canvas, Patty is flying without her ultimate safety net – a reality Haiduk had to consciously build into her performance while fondly remembering her former co-star.

“I loved working with Doug Davidson… I miss him. I miss seeing his little face. It was some good times, having that friend – her brother that just loved her no matter what. But maybe Patty’s found her independence a little bit more (without Paul)?

While Patty navigates a Paul-less Genoa City, she has managed to find a fascinating, unexpected ally in Matt Clark, who is now played by daytime veteran Roger Howarth (General Hospital, One Life to Live, As the World Turns).

“I think for her, it was just, ‘I’ve got one person in town who actually really doesn’t know anything about me, and how wonderful that is.’ … It’s kind of a hoot to watch the three of us [Patty, Matt and Michelle Stafford’s Phyllis] together.”

Could Patty Know Where Diane Is?

With Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) currently missing in action, the playing field is wide open for Patty to get closer to her true love, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). But does Patty merely benefit from Diane’s absence, or is she actively pulling the strings behind it? When pressed on whether Patty has her prints on the mystery, Haiduk eased that her character’s penchant for manipulation is sharper than ever.

“Patty might know where she is, but Patty is so good at kind of manipulating the situation, yeah, she doesn’t [let on]. But there’s a possibility she might. She just might.”

If Diane stays gone long enough, Patty is more than ready to step into her place – even if it means settling for a completely manufactured reality with Jack.

“Jack should be a little worried, but honestly, she just wants to have a little bit of love with him… She wants a family with him. Like, even if it’s a superficial [one]. Just him and er, she could take him, and that would be it. The two of them together for the rest of their lives – she would love that.”

The Unbelievable True Story of “Mr. Kitty”

No conversation with Stacy Haiduk about Patty Williams would be complete without mentioning “Mr. Kitty” – the infamous dead, taxidermied cat Patty used to carry around. Haiduk cleared up a long-standing myth about the prop that she famously brought to the Daytime Emmys in 2009.

“It’s not a cat purse, that was Mr. Kitty! That was the cat… They said, ‘Would you bring the cat to the Emmys?’ and I said, ‘Sure.’ And they said, ‘You can’t lose it because it’s two grand for that thing.’ So, I thought, well, I’m not going to hold this thing around all day long, so what if I make it so that I can put it around my arm and then hold it up? And that became the ‘cat purse.’”

As for where the real Mr. Kitty came from? Haiduk dropped a hilarious Hollywood easter egg.

“This was somebody’s beloved animal that is in a taxidermist place, I guess, that you can rent. I actually saw Mr. Kitty on America’s Next Top Model! They had to do a photoshoot in the taxidermy place, and there was Mr. Kitty on a shelf!”

Could Mr. Kitty make a psychological return to torture Patty? Haiduk is not only all for it, but she’s also suggesting it! “Somebody plants Mr. Kitty so psychologically, Patty has to be like, ‘What’s going on?’ … It would be hilarious. It would be kind of fun.”

“The Power of Grayskull” officially took over Toronto last night. Thanks to a generous invitation from MGM Studios Canada, I had the chance to attend the advance Toronto premiere of Amazon MGM’s highly anticipated live-action adaptations of Masters of the Universe at the Scotiabank Theatre.

Before the lights even went down, the energy in the lobby was electric. MGM rolled out the red carpet for fans, critics, and influencers, offering some incredibly cool photo opportunities and setting the perfect nostalgic mood. To top it off, the pre-screening festivities included a costume contest, where the crowd went wild for a winner who absolutely crushed it as She-Ra.

But once the lights dimmed, the real question remained: Could this franchise successfully transition to modern live-action? The short answer is yes.

Honouring the Camp without Punching Down

Directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee), the film takes us right back to the mystical realm of Eternia. The premise follows Prince Adam – played with fantastic charisma by Nicholas Galitzine (The Sheep Detectives) – who must track down his legendary Power Sword to stop Jared Leto’s menacing Skeletor from taking over the universe.

Going into the theatre, I’ll admit I was a bit nervous about how the tone would handle a property deeply rooted in 1980s toy-line lore. Dusting off He-Man for a modern audience is a tightrope walk, but Knight completely nails it.

The movie brilliantly avoids taking itself too seriously. It fully understands and embraces the fact that the original 80s cartoon could be incredibly corny, addressing those quirky, retro elements in a playful, deeply self-aware way. Crucially, it never punches down or insults the audience’s intelligence. It strikes that rare golden balance of being unapologetically campy while maintaining a genuine, emotional heart.

A Soundtrack Fit for Eternia

Beyond the visuals, we have to talk about the music, which is absolute perfection.

The main Masters of the Universe theme is a bombastic, 80s-inspired anthem delivered by the legendary UK glam-rock band The Darkness and boasts a stellar production team consisting of composer Daniel Pemberton and Queen’s iconic guitarist Brian May. It is exactly the kind of fist-pumping, high-energy theme a movie like this deserves. The rest of the soundtrack is equally robust, peppered with brilliant throwback tracks from The Cure to The Killers that keep the momentum moving at a breakneck pace.

Final Verdict & Fan Teases

For the long-time fans heading out to see this, keep your eyes peeled. There is a brilliant cameo tied directly to the 1987 live-action film that will leave you smiling. And whatever you do, do not leave your seat when the credits start rolling. You will definitely want to stay for the mid-credit and post-credit scenes, which are bound to have a massive segment of the audience immediately clamouring for a sequel.

Whether you grew up playing with the action figures or are simply looking for a massive, fun summer blockbuster to kick off the season, this film completely delivers.

The Vampire Lestat

In the continuation of Interview with the Vampire, the new rock and roll-centric series follows the Vampire Lestat (Sam Reid) who goes an electric multi-city tour while being haunted by “muses” from his wild and rebellious past. As his band’s popularity and star power rises, so does Lestat’s influence over vampires and humans alike, leaving others to contend with Lestat’s power in the face of the Great Conversion, an unnatural surge in the vampire population.
