·      The Diplomat returns for its fourth season with two marriages threatening to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler (Kerri Russell) brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Penn (Allison Janney) and VP Wyler’s (Rufus Sewell) conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the US toward war. Premiered on Wednesday, Oct. 14 on Netflix.

·      Peep Show’s David Mitchell returns as the brilliant but endearingly awkward puzzlemaster for a second season of Ludwig. Now an official police consultant tackling a new slate of seemingly impossible crimes, John “Ludwig” Taylor continues to search for his missing twin brother alongside Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), as one masquerade ends and another begins. ·      Canadians looking for Peacock’s Crystal Lake can catch it on Crave. Linda Cardellini stars – A dark secret from Pamela Voorhees' past emerges after her son's death, just as bodies begin turning up across the quiet town of Crystal Lake. All 8 episodes dropped on Thursday, Oct. 15.

·      The latest take on Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility also premieres this weekend with Daisy Edgar-Jones, George MacKay, Caitriona Balfe and Fiona Shaw.

·      If you want something totally different, there’s Street Fighter with 50 Cent, Jason Momoa, and Noah Centineo. Ryu and Ken reunite when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament. As they face a hidden conspiracy, they must confront each other and their past-or face destruction.

As part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Primetime lineup, the first two episodes of the sixth season of Slow Horses were screened at this year’s festival.

Cast members Gary Oldman, Olivia Cooke, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Ruth Bradley, Rosalind Eleazar, and Saskia Reeves joined director Adam Randall at the premiere on Friday, September 11, at the TIFF Lightbox Theatre to discuss the new season, which finds the Slough House agents on the run in a high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge.

During the panel discussion following the screening, the cast shared firsthand insights into their character arcs, the show’s complex dynamics, and their experiences on set:

·      Olivia Cooke (Sid Baker): Discussing her highly anticipated return (she’s going off to do House of the Dragon and The Girlfriend), Cooke emphasized her deep appreciation of the series. “I know I’ve said this in the past, and I’ve been lying, but this is genuinely, his job is one of the best I’ve ever done,” she shared, adding that “the alchemy that this show has is unlike any that I’ve experienced.”

·      Christopher Chung (Roddy Ho): Chung teased the consequences of his character’s previous missteps, noting that Season 5 “left of a lot of landscape for me to kind of figure out how he was going to navigate the fallout of him being having the wool pulled over his eyes.” He also expressed his excitement about Olivia Cooke’s return, stating, “it has just been the most incredible season because we’ve had Olivia come back.”

• Rivals and EastEnders star Danny Dyer hosts Saturday Night Live UK this weekend. So far this season, the UK import is doing better than its American counterpart. Sasha Keable performs. Airs Saturday at 10 p.m. on the CTV Comedy Channel in Canada and streams on Crave the following day.

• Russel T. Davies’ new psychological drama-thriller Tip Toe premiered last Friday on Crave (with STARZ). Alan Cumming (The Traitors U.S.) and David Morrissey (Sherwood, The Walking Dead) star as neighbours whose simple disagreements escalate into dangerous hostility in their Manchester suburb. The five-part series explores themes of rising anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and online radicalization and was given a 4-star review by The Guardian when it premiered in the UK earlier this year.

• The new CBS comedy Eternally Yours premiered on Thursday. Ed Weeks (The Mindy Project) and Allegra Edwards star as a vampire couple whose once-passionate romance has devolved into a pulseless marriage after 500 years together. Living in present-day Seattle with their oddball coven, they’ve settled into an eternal run – until their daughter’s earnest human boyfriend unexpectedly enters their lives and forces them to confront whether their love can survive forever (or if forever is a life sentence). The premiere is now streaming on Paramount+ and STACKTV.

• In case you missed it last week, Zoe Kazan’s adaptation of East of Eden began streaming on Netflix (Oct. 1). The 7-episode mini-series stars Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist.

• Mike Flanagan’s (The Life of Chuck, The Haunting of Hill House) Carrie series premiered on Prime Video this past week, with all 8 episodes now streaming. After her father's sudden death, sheltered teenager Carrie White (Summer H. Howell), raised by her domineering mother, enters public high school, where she faces a viral bullying scandal and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers.

• Ted Lasso wrapped up its 10-episode fourth season this past week. Binge the whole season on Apple TV with Ted (Jason Sudeikis) returning to Richmond to coach a second division women’s football team, the Lady Greyhounds.

• In theatres this weekend: Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning follows Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a young Facebook engineer, who enlists the help of Jeff Horowitz (Jeremy Allen White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets. Jeremy Strong also stars as Mark Zuckerberg.

• Jessica Chastain pulls double duty in Other Mommy, where an 8-year-old girl living in a home with marital problems confronts a sinister entity which comes out of her closet, and whom she calls “Other Mommy.”

• Bassam Tariq’s Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother has its limited release – following its premiere last month at TIFF. Mahershala Ali stars as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman, who embarks on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children after his wife dies, confronting forces closing in and beliefs threatening to unravel. John Cho and Giancarlo Esposito also star.

Yash Patel, a 24-year-old financial analyst from Monroe Township, N.J., went from sitting in the Head of Household suite to being evicted last Thursday on Big Brother 28.

Following his exit, Yash breaks down the frantic conversations on the block, his numerical ratings for the remaining players, and why operating against the house “icons” felt like going up against “dark magic.” Here are the key highlights from his exit interview.

On Drew’s Betrayal and The Backdoor Blindside

Yash's game was upended when BB Bribe powers and vote swings put him on the block, leaving his fate in the hands of his long-time rival/ally, Drew. When asked about holding hard feelings toward Drew for siding with the icons, Yash kept it strictly professional.

"Game-wise? Yes. Real life? No. Everything that happened in that house stays in that house... But in terms of the game, you best believe I have hard feelings towards him about that decision."

Describing the desperate moments leading up to the vote, Yash admitted how difficult it was to campaign to Drew and Melody:

"Those conversations on the block were just all over the place... I'm not someone who likes to ask people for things and ask people for help. So having to ask Drew of all people for help hurt my soul in the game to do. But those conversations were just kind of desperate because I needed Drew's vote to stay."

Player Ratings and Strategic Reads

A self-proclaimed "ratings guy," Yash didn't hold back when asked to rate the remaining houseguests' gameplay on a scale from 1 to 10:

·      Devens: 9.4

·      Dee: 8.7

·      Drew: 7.7

·      Taylor: 6.5

·      Melody: 6.1

Elaborating on Melody’s decision to nominate him, Yash questioned her long-term vision:

"I don't view Melody as a very bright, strategic player. I don't really think she thought about how each scenario would play out... Short term, she may have known what was going to happen, but long term did she think it through? No chance."

Going Against the Icons: Dee vs. Devens

Both of Yash’s HOH reigns were hampered by game-altering twists—Devens’ Diamond Veto and Dee’s BB Bribe—but Yash reframes those obstacles as a badge of honour.

"You could look at it as frustrating, or you could look at it as a compliment. I think that's the only way these people could have stopped [me] is by using powers, and by using their reputations and their fan bases."

When assessing which icon was worse for his game, Yash singled out Devens as an unstoppable force.

"Working against [Devens] was very difficult because he operated like a thief in the night. He would just be in the shadows having conversations, and one conversation with him and these people were eating out of the palms of his hands. He was preaching some sort of dark magic with his words."

Yash also expressed disbelief that the house allowed Dee and Devens to ride so far together given their pre-existing history on Survivor:

"Ironically, common sense seems to be an uncommon trait. It baffles me that people do not put two and two together... If you walked into this gauntlet of a house with someone you knew from the outside world... you're going to stick with that person no matter what."

No Regrets and Undying Loyalty

Despite taking a shot alongside Dee, Yash insists he has zero regrets about voting to save her over Angela earlier in the season.

"Dee made it very clear that she was a heat-seeking missile towards Drew, Melody, and Barrett... Keeping her, not only was she going to put up the other side of the house, but she also objectively is a bigger shield."

And as for who he would have stood beside at the finale? His answer was instant: "1,000% Taylor. There's nobody else in the game I would rather take to the end than Taylor."

The Signature Morning Hair Routine

To wrap things up, Yash shared the secret behind his signature look:

"It's really nothing crazy... I wake up and I immediately brush my hair down with my beard brush so the lineup is sharp. Then I fluff the back—party in the back, we've got to sculpt the lettuce! No products, no touch-ups really. We just rock and roll."

Graham Norton is uncorking a bottle of white wine and plumping the red sofa cushions in time for a new series of The Graham Norton Show. As he invites Hollywood’s shiniest stars to his red sofa for drinks and banter, fans can rest easy that the show has been commissioned for two more series after this one, meaning Graham will be swapping sparkling repartee with A-listers until at least 2029.

The return of The Graham Norton Show caps a brilliant year for Graham, as the show was drawn into the orbit of the world’s biggest pop star. Taylor Swift, who has called Graham ‘insanely charismatic and loveable,’ was a guest on his sofa last autumn when she got the idea for her hit song Opalite, subsequently inviting Graham and all that episode’s guests to be in the accompanying music video. The icing on the cake was in July, when Graham was a guest at the event of the year – Taylor’s wedding to football star Travis Kelce in New York.

We asked Graham to reflect on his excellent year, to confess why he’s nervous before each series, and dish on his new BFF status with Taylor Swift. 

How does it feel to come back for series 34?

It's genuinely shocking to me that I still really look forward to that first day back in the studio. It's always lovely. You know in [the BBC series] The Repair Shop when people bring in something scuffed and old and the repairers fix it and the person gets it back again and see it looking beautiful? It’s like that. The emotion I feel when I go back to the studio is very like those people when they get their shiny thing back. It looks new and yet it’s very familiar at the same time

What makes you most nervous before coming back?

The fact that you can’t get match fit for it. You can’t be, ‘I’ve done the 5k, I'm lifting weights, I've climbed several small mountains now I’m going to climb the big one.’ You go in cold, so there's always a slight trepidation and I’m thinking, ‘I wonder if I’ll remember how to do this,’ because I won’t have done it since February.  Thus far, my muscle memory has always kicked in.

How does it feel that the BBC has recommissioned the show? 

It's very gratifying that they want us. You never take that for granted. They've just got rid of some shows so, we're very grateful that we're back and that there's still an audience.  Also, I think one of the good things about the show is it has a big international reach, so it's kind of a good calling card for BBC.

Did you pause before accepting the three-series renewal?

Not really, because the way it lands, when I finish that third series in early 2029, I'll be 65. I think if they were to offer me more after that, then there might be a slight pause for thought.  It will be: ‘Do I still want to be doing this when I’m 68 or 69?’ But at 63 now, 65 doesn’t seem that terrible. And I know lots of people working at 65.

Has your interview style changed over the years?

I hope it has! I hope I haven’t just stayed still over the last 30 years. My questions have got shorter: when I’ve watched old interviews, my questions were so long, with so many qualifying phrases that I think, ‘Just ask the bloody question!’ The other thing I don't do anymore is put jokes in the questions.  I used to try to get a laugh on the question but decided that that’s unfair on the guest: the laugh should be from their answer. And then if they don’t get a laugh, maybe I can with a witty response.

Do you ever get nervous before you chat with a star?

The big guests always make you nervous, because you don’t want to mess it up for them. People like Tom Cruise, Cher, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, George Clooney – all those big hitters come with a legacy and it’s extraordinary that they’ve agreed to sit on our sofa.  Once they’re there you want them to have a nice time and you don't want them to sit there thinking, ‘What a terrible show. Why did I say yes to this?!’ So, I guess that's where the nerves are. 

Can you tell us some juicy behind-the-scenes stories?

Before the show, we all gather backstage in a small, dimly lit area. I don’t go on until all the guests are there with me, but very occasionally it turns into a strange waiting game where one star won’t leave their dressing room to join our huddle until they hear that another star has left their dressing room.  So, we’re all just stood there waiting for a couple of people who apparently need to be last to set. It’s very odd.

Is there a lot of chit-chat when you meet backstage?

Sometimes they're catching up with each other or introducing themselves. But it’s an odd situation for me – I’m careful not to go too far down the coal mine of chat with them there because I want them to be funny and interesting on the show: ‘Save that anecdote for when you’re in front of the audience, please!’

When Taylor Swift was a guest on the show last autumn, it sparked her idea for the song Opalite. She invited you and all the guests in that episode (Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Lewis Capaldi, Jodie Turner-Smith and Cillian Murphy) to appear in the music video. What was that like?!

At the end of the video Taylor puts in that little clip from the chat show where Domhnall says, ‘I’m hoping to get in a Taylor Swift music video,’ and you see her go, ‘Oh!’ – she has a light bulb moment.  It was only a few weeks later that we got an email and she had storyboarded the whole thing; the whole video was there and all the parts we were playing. Then on the day, we were in a shopping centre in Croydon filming this video that she directed herself. It was amazing!

Then Taylor invited you to her wedding! What was that like?

I was very surprised because I shouldn't be at Taylor Swift's wedding! At first, I was thinking, ‘Am I really invited or am I going to some sort of after-party, like the barbecue on the Sunday?’ But no, it was the actual wedding, and everyone was giddy with excitement. Once inside, it really was just a wedding – lovely and sweet and all about them and their love story.

 When I was milling around, I suddenly thought, ‘I'm actually very well-placed to be a guest at this wedding,’ because there were a lot of famous people there and I've met them all through the show. So, I was able to chat to everybody.  It was just nice to meet them in a totally social setting, where you could let your hair down.

Lastly, tell us which dream guests you’d still like to get on the show.

 Any of the young royals – William and Kate would be nice.  We’re working on getting Brad Pitt for the first time. I do believe he will come on. We’re hoping that Julia Roberts or George Clooney will have a word with him and say, ‘It’s really not that bad!’

Atonement

Based on a heartbreaking true story and Dexter Filkins’ acclaimed 2012 New Yorker essay, Atonement is directed by Oscar nominee Reed Van Dyk. The film tackles the enduring, devastating consequences of the Iraq War long after the actual fighting stops. It follows a haunted former U.S. marine (Boyd Holbrook, The Morning Show) who, a decade after his unit tragically fired upon a civilian family, desperately seeks out the surviving matriarch (Hiam Abbass, Succession and Rami) with the help of a journalist (Kenneth Branagh).

Babies

Tackling the universal “will we or won’t we?” parental dilemma with a heavy dose of humour, Babies is a big-hearted comedy directed by Lauren Miller Rogen (Like Father). It follows a long-term, happily undecided couple (Anna Kendrick and Seth Rogen) who suddenly get a chaotic crash course in child-rearing when their newly single friend (Kate Berlant, Maddie’s Secret) and her toddler move in. Boasting a stacked supporting cast – including Issa Rae (Insecure), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), David Strathairn (Nomadland), and Sharon Stone – Babies promises a large-canvas look at the messy realities of aging, community, and even potty-training anxiety.

Elsinore

Anchored by what promises to be a standout performance from Andrew Scott, Elsinore tells the incredible, inspiring true story of Ian Charleson (Chariots of Fire). When Charleson steps in to take over the lead role in Hamlet at London’s National Theatre after Daniel Day-Lewis famously walks off stage, his dream opportunity arrives at the exact moment he receives a devastating AIDS diagnosis. Fjord

HALF

If you’re looking for a high-octane “Midnight Madness” thriller, Half looks like a an absolute blast. Directed by Samjad (Golam), this wild “curry western” genre mashup follows twin half-vampire siblings (Ranjith Sajeev and Aishwarya Raj) who embark on a bloody, relentless quest for revenge across the desolate Rajasthan desert after being ambushed by local highway bandits. The film features martial arts action choreographed by The Night Comes for Us’ Very Tri Yulisman and looks to blend classic vampire lore, gritty Western tropes, and a killer Malayalam soundtrack.

Ink

Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) returns with Ink, a fast-paced stylish adaptation of James Graham’s acclaimed play tracing the explosive birth of modern UK tabloid culture. Set in 1969, the film follows rising media mogul Robert Murdoch (Guy Pearce) and his ambitious editor Larry Lamb (Jack O’Connell) as they take over the struggling daily newspaper The Sun and transform it into a sensationalist, circulation-busting powerhouse. Also features Claire Foy.

Misty Green

Written and directed by Chris Rock, Misty Green is set to be a hilarious, scathing satire of the film industry. The film stars Slow Horses’ Rosalind Eleazar in a career-making lead role as a talented Black actress fighting for a second act after he once-promising career hits the skids. When a lucrative offer from an ex-flame (Adam Driver) and a potential comeback role in a project from an ace director (Rock) intersect with her brother’s (Daniel Kaluuya) urgent financial crisis, she is forced to navigate the absurd, high-stakes trade-offs of Hollywood. Phoolan

From Canadian director Richie Mehta (Delhi Crime, Amal), Phoolan brings the extraordinary early life of Phoolan Devi – India’s legendary “Bandit Queen” – to the screen in a tense, high-stakes biographical thriller. Anchored by a fierce lead performance from Sneha Kumari, the film focuses on a gruelling 48-hour siege in rural India where a 17-year-old Devi and her small band of outlaws must outsmart 2,000 heavily armed men sent to eliminate her.

Anchored by John Turturro (Severance), The Only Living Pickpocket is set up as a low-key, character-driven crime drama that would feel like a throwback to ‘70s “New Hollywood.” Written and directed by Noah Segan (Blood Relatives), the film follows an old-school Bronx pickpocket, Harry, who avoids technology and plays by his own rules. The Surgeon

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) steps into a high-stakes action-thriller in The Surgeon. The Big Brother 28 jury house officially has its first resident. LaTrice “Lala” Verrett, a 57-year-old boutique salesperson from Maplewood, N.J., was evicted last week.

Following her eviction, Lala discussed how her age and “hose mom” status impacted her game, why winning an iconic endurance competition put a massive target on her back, and her thoughts on the reality TV veterans running the house. Here are the key highlights from her exit interview.

On Playing the “House Mom” and Winning The Wall

Lala entered the house hoping her life experience and maternal instincts would benefit her game, taking on the role of cooking and cleaning for the houseguests. However, that dynamic quickly shifted.

“I thought that my age and that mothering thing was going to work for me… it was pretty cool to cook for everybody until you told me that people were like… no one wants to be told what to do.”

Ultimately, Lala pinpoints her victory in the iconic Wall endurance competition as the exact moment her game was doomed.

“Once I won that wall… the blinders were off of them. They were like, ‘Oh hey, wait a second. This chick is no joke.’ … Once I won that baby, it was over. They were like, ‘Oh no, she’s on the dart. We’re putting her on the chart. She’s got to go.”

The Reality TV Icons and D’s “Lethal” Gameplay

Reflecting on the house structure, Lala admitted that her biggest missed opportunity was not aligning with the reality TV veterans (the "icons") from the start.

"I should have been riding their train instead of riding parallel, saying let's knock them off the track... I really feel like they had an edge on all of us who were in the house... because they've been there, done that."

When asked which icon was the worst for her specific game, Lala immediately named Survivor winner D.

"D all day long, that little chick is strategic and lethal. There's a reason that chick won $1 million on Survivor... These Survivor players are ruthless, and it is very apparent that one of them will make it to the last two seats because they are playing this game like Survivor, not like Big Brother, baby."

Betrayals and the “Honour” Society”

Lala left the house feeling blindsided by several houseguests, but one goodbye message stung the most.

"I felt betrayed by several people at different times in the game, but I guess the most betrayal I felt was Barrett. I felt really blindsided by him on his goodbye message."

She also didn't mince words regarding the "Honour Society" alliance, which included Angela.

"Honour Society was not honourable at all... The Honour Society was our big old joke as far as I'm concerned."

The Hailey Feud

Addressing online chatter about her tense relationship with Hailey, Lala completely rejected the notion that any bullying took place, noting that she takes the term very seriously.

"Ignoring someone is not bullying. I ignored Hailey. Hailey was a very passive-aggressive person... She was, let's put it this way, very competitive towards me. And I told her, 'Baby, I'm half your age, you have no competition with me. Do your thing and I'm going to do mine.'"

Looking Ahead

If she could play the game again, Lala admits she would be much more guarded.

"I was a little bit too open too early... just not being so transparent and being a little bit more scheming, I think, because that's the only way I think you can really win Big Brother."

As for who she wants to see go the distance? She is rooting hard for Taylor, but suspects Angela will also make it far on a "redemption tour".
