Today, I invited a hater on my show. Instead of running from people, I invite them in to have a conversation that will allow us to learn from each other.

That is the fundamental mindset difference between a hater, someone who looks for the bad or reaches for ways to fulfill the narrative that they already have in their own minds, and someone with an open mind toward learning.

Most of what is either good or bad in your life will hinge on the decisions you made in life. This is a powerful thing to think about, and something that not enough people spend time considering. Extrapolating from there, this means that the ability to make good decisions is one of, if not THE most important ability you can develop!

What science has taught us about decision making is that you will make better decisions if you focus on risk mitigation, rather than focusing on the good that may happen.  If your focus is on how to mitigate your risk, your decisions will be better overall.

As you go through life, you come to the realization that many people have serious psychological problems. Whatever metric or system you use to measure psychological issues, you will find that a very large number of the people that you run across exhibit those traits.

But times reveals everything, so when it comes to deciding the people you will have relationships with, whether personal or business, give it some time. It’s easy for someone to pretend to be someone that they are not for a few weeks or a few months, but try to give it a year to make sure you know who they really are.

Then, understand that everyone has a little weird in them. Everyone has a different mix of character traits, with desirable and less desirable aspects mixed in. Just make sure the weirdness doesn’t out-weigh the rest too much. Allow for the mix in your relationships, as long as it’s not overboard.

• Probably about 70% of people that you will run into have serious psychological issues
• If you don’t understand psychological issues, you might start second-guessing yourself and thinking that you’re the one with issues
• The dark triad is one way to understand psychological issues of varying degrees
• It’s ok to be a little eccentric, but know where it becomes a problem
• Three things that will mess you up: Pride, stubbornness, and being overly sensitive
• A lot of times pride expresses itself as anger
• Often, stubborn people come across as very nice, but do not act on advice

It feels like the level of narcissism in the world is continually increasing. Just take a look at your Instagram feed, and you will see it proudly on display. It seems like nothing is more important to people today than themselves and their looks.

Maybe it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate our emphasis. Put more effort into the truly important things in life, and less into the ones that don’t matter. Put less effort into how you look, and more into what you do.

At the end of the day, you can’t please everyone, so don’t worry about it. Just do you, and do good in the world.

Will Durant said, “A nation is born stoic, and dies epicurean.” This means that, at the beginning of a nation’s lifespan, it’s citizens are tough. They understand the true meaning of difficulty and stress. They don’t stress out over the small things in life, because they have bigger things to worry about. They’re tough, and they find a way to turn a horrible situation into something great.

But as the nation continues in prosperity, its citizens turn epicurean. The focus turns to luxury and materialism. As this happens, smaller and smaller difficulties stress citizens, until the toughness level has decreased to the point where everyone is so weak-willed that tiny difficulties can destroy them.

Experience difficulties. Toughen yourself up, and teach yourself that you can truly handle difficulties, and come out on top! Instead of running from difficulties, embrace them as opportunities to toughen yourself.

This message is a hard hitting reminder that, while we all make mistakes, it’s extremely important that you always put out work that is the highest quality of which you are capable.

After doing something, if you can honestly say it was the best you could have done, nobody can fault you. But if you did not pursue the work in a conscientious way, with an understanding of the consequences to yourself or whoever you work for, you have no excuse.

This is a piece of internal communication with my team, as well as a lesson for everyone who wants to accomplish big things in this world: Everyone likes to make excuses for why they didn’t do as good a job as they wanted, but pure results are the real measure of what has been done. Do you read history? Today, most people don’t. Most people don’t read at all, but if they do read, it’s probably either light, fluffy novels or maybe a self-help book here and there. But what about history? What can a deeper understanding of history do for your life, in helping you achieve the best life possible?

Today, I’m going through some moments in history, and what can be learned from them. Because without and understanding of history, there really is no way that we can predict the future. But because history tends to repeat itself, if we develop an understanding and knowledge of history and the trends that come back time and time again, we can better understand the world around us, and make more sense of where it’s headed, as well as if current political decisions are likely to be a good idea.

Everyone is looking for the ideal business model. They’re looking to discover the perfect model to bring ever increasing revenue. Today, I’m talking about two common business models, and which I prefer.

The two models: Netflix and Spotify. Netflix buys out agreements with content creators, whereas Spotify pays royalties dependent on number listens.

Therefore, as Spotify’s income increases, so too does their cost. But as Netflix’s income increases, their costs stay the same, or even decrease.

This is one of the most important factors to look at when analyzing a potential business. Will cost increase as revenue increases, or will cost stay the same or even decrease?

Today, it feels like everyone is looking for something to be offended by. Whether the thing has anything to do with them or not, they’re on the search for something that they can be offended by.

If you really need to be offended, though, be offended by the big problems in the world! Or, better yet, choose to learn from the process of being offended, and improve yourself through it.

Take the things that people say to you, that would offend weaker people, and use them as motivation to work on improving yourself everyday.

How careful are you about the contracts that you sign? Do you read them and fully understand them, in all of their details, before attaching your signature? Or do you think it will all just magically “work out” somehow for you?

Too many people do the later. They don’t pay enough attention.

This is such a common thread you see in the world: Plain ignorance. As I say on this episode, the root of all the problems in the world is not the rich getting richer. The root of all problems is ignorance, plain and simple.

But, in a lot of ways, it’s not everyone’s fault: The schooling system has set them up for failure. It’s set them up to go through the most formative years of life without learning the most practical skills. Things like money management, entrepreneurship, just pure logical thinking, all get passed over, and, to make matters worse, children are given tons of sugar through the sodas they drink, and then forced to sit through a standardized test. It’s no wonder people don’t come out with good critical thinking skills.

Don’t be someone who contributes to the main problem in the world of ignorance. Educate yourself, and learn to be smarter and more practical.

When it comes to success, only a multifaceted approach works. The University of Pennsylvania found that the number one trait that contributes to success is conscientiousness. There are 5 facets of conscientiousness: Industriousness, perfectionism, organization, diligence, and prudence. Each of these facets plays a role, and today’s episode is about how each contributes, and how you can build your strength in each area.

But it’s important to understand that a combination of many different factors are going to lead to your ultimate ability to succeed in this life. People tend to underestimate what they can do, and what is possible, because they don’t have the ability to focus. If you can’t really concentrate your efforts on one task for an extended period of time, you’re going to find it a lot more difficult to actually get things done.

That is why the ability to turn on intense focus for as much time as is needed is absolutely essential to your success. Without it, you will jump aimlessly from task to task, not finishing anything, and not getting anywhere closer to your goals.

Today I’m talking about the three main pieces of advice that I would give my younger self if I could go back in time. These are the broad ideas that are going to make a big difference in your life, no matter what your specific goals are.

First of all, the quickest path between two points is always a straight line. This means that you must bring determined and unrelenting focus to your goals. Whatever you see as your aim, you need to focus very strongly on that one thing, even though it can alter and change somewhat over time. Whatever it is right now, you need to be able to bring determined and long-term focus towards its accomplishment.

This is what is going to separate you from the rest of the people in the world who are also trying to accomplish things. Most of the world is distracted, and that is what is holding them back. But in a world full of distractions and distracted people, you need to bring intense focus to your goals, and you will see them accomplished.

Information is important, but facts can distract from the foundational principles of the world. A lot of people get far too caught up in the process of attaining peripheral information, rather than exploring and seeking to deeply understand the principles and foundations of life. Things like general economics, social skills, the ability to read people, and financial principles, are the kind of foundational knowledge that you should be seeking to acquire.

Because without them, when you simply focus on the peripheral information and education, it’s easy to be led astray by things that are not true. But knowledge and wisdom of foundational principles will allow you to see through the lies, identify them, and allow you to build on that foundation in a strong way so that you can be more successful in life and your pursuit of health, wealth, love and happiness.

It’s the idea behind specialization. Then, work to surround yourself with people who have strengths in areas that you have weaknesses in, so that every area is covered. To spend too much time, energy, and effort working on your weaknesses will only be a waste of time.

Most people have an extremely difficult time being productive and getting everything done that they need to because they constantly procrastinate. If you could learn how to end procrastination in your life, your productivity and output would absolutely skyrocket.

Do you know what the Dark Triad is? The Dark Triad is a test that people can take that will show them what levels of narcissism, machiavellianism, and psychotic tendencies they have, and it one of the most telling tests for whether you want someone in your life or not.

As you go through life, you need to start recognizing these traits and tendencies in others, so that you can be on the lookout for them, and know which people to be careful around! Knowing how to read people is one of the most important skills you can develop, and I talk about it a lot. Put time and effort into developing the right toolset. Too many people think that hustle is all that they need, and that if they have enough hustle, they will get where they want to go. But it’s not true, because having the right tools, and knowing how to effectively us them will take you much farther than hustle.

And HEXACO is a perfect example of that: If you know it, and understand how to apply it to real life, you will know who you should be friends with, go into business with, or have in your life for any reason, while the person who simply sees more hustle as the goal will have to go through a process of trial and error to find the right person, and waste tons of time on the way.

When raising money, it’s extremely important to be getting in front of the right investors. Just because an investor has a lot of money and is looking for an investment does not mean that they are a good fit for you. You have to match up the right investors for your idea.

This is the part that too many people don’t think about. You have to look for investors who have had previous “wins” in your category. These are the people who will be most excited by your idea, and see the value in it.

Almost everyone in the world makes the ego-centric, which is the error of thinking, often subconsciously, that the world is all about you. That you are, in essence, the “center of the universe.” Whether people think this consciously or not, it manifests itself in the way they behave.

The mistake that this causes in sales and raising money from investors, is that you spend time making assumptions that the potential investor or customer is interested in the same things you are, instead of gathering data about what the other person is really interested in, and what is most important to them.

Entrepreneurs and business-owners tend to have a misinformed and wrong idea of what exactly is holding them back in business. The most common thought process if that if they had morning money, they could make the business work.

But the truth is that most people are far more business-savvy constrained than money-constrained. The high-earners in the world put large amounts of time and effort into learning through reading, listening to smart people, going to conferences, and other activities.

The world is far more competitive than most people realize when it comes to having the knowledge and skill-sets for making money. Do you know how to effectively make decisions? A lot of people find themselves paralyzed by the decision making process, when in reality there is a simple tool to help you always make the right decision: Consider the downside.

In every decision you make, look at what the downside of both options is. After looking at both, you usually will realize that one is far worse than the other, and your decision is instantly made.

Most people don’t realize how valuable their haters are to them. There is a progression that is very common among the successful. Initially, haters don’t even know who you are. They ignore you. Then, they laugh at and ridicule you. After that, as you become more and more successful, they hate you because it reflects poorly on their own life. And then, gradually and over time, they come to love you.

So understand that you could be in any one of those stages. But it is a process that you are working through. Each stage leads naturally to the next, and the process has been proven over and over again with almost all success stories.

Running experiments separates the pros from the amateurs in the marketing world. Those who run the most experiments simply win the most. In fact, in my experience, I have to run about 18 experiments for each winner that I pick out and use again.

You will find this to be the fact over and over again in life. The people who refuse to be open minded to other things, to different ideas and ways of doing things, remain stuck in their old ways and don’t innovate, don’t create, and ultimately don’t see the success that they are looking for.

Motivation is required for success. It’s as simple as that. But while most people understand this truth, few people take the time to learn how to motivate themselves effectively and well. People learn a few of the things that motivate them, like money, or relationships, or achievement, and they put all their energy into that one aspect.

But below I’m outlining the 17 different aspects of what motivates you, and how you can use them to achieve more.

In all of this, it’s importance to have balance. Too often people get all caught up in one or two of the below, and put 90% of their effort into those things. Instead, work on spreading these out evenly in your life, around 5% or so for each, to make sure your life is as fulfilling and happy as possible.

Most people are too frugal with their money and aren’t nearly frugal enough with their time. But you can always get more money, you cannot ever get more time, and that makes it the most valuable asset in the world, and worth guarding extremely carefully!

This means the one thing you should truly fear in this world are time wasters. Whether they come in the form of people (friends, family, co-workers, etc), projects, habits, or anything else! It’s important to be ruthless in cutting out the time wasters in your life if you want to truly get ahead and achieve goals. Knowing when to give up and when to stick it out on a project is one of the most difficult things. While too many entrepreneurs and people in general are spending too much time working on a dead-end job, or a business model that is clearly not catching on, a lot of people also won’t stick things out long enough to actually find the success that they’re looking for.

In this episode I’m talking about a conversation I recently had with Steve Ballmer about how to know whether a project is worth sticking out for the long run, or whether you need to give it up and work on something else.

When “stickiness” (Steve Ballmer’s term) is required, it’s important that that stickiness and dedication to a clear vision is accompanied by a large amount of creativity. A lot of people are trying to force their customers to like their product. They think that they understand what is best for their consumers, and so they are in this constant uphill battle to make the product so perfect that consumers can’t help but buy it.

But this is a losing strategy. A product that is a good market fit doesn’t even need to be perfect for people to want to buy it. This is why it’s important to initially put very minimal effort into testing products, to see if they fit well. Then, once one of them really takes off, you know which product you should be focusing all of your energy on!

Materialism motivates. It’s that simple. While everyone is different, and so the extent to which it will motivate you varies, it’s an important principle to keep in mind. Because many people feel guilty about their love of materialistic things. But use it as a tool! If cars motivate you, keep them around! If a nice house motivates you, keep that on your mind. Understand yourself, and your own intrinsic motivations, and then use those any time that you feel like you need an extra push of motivation.

Passive income, and the power of it, is one of the most pervasive myths in modern culture. Many people think that passive income is what is going to eventually bring them real wealth. But look at the Forbes list! None of those people created wealth exclusively through passive investment and income. If you want to be successful in life, whether that means making more money, doing more good, achieving more, or anything else, you will need to master the skill of persuasion. Today, I’m talking about why reward is the strongest persuasion technique, and how to use it.

In addition, we go over how you should play the “versus” game to find out what truly motivates you. Compare two common motivations, such as fame and money, and ask which you would rather do without in order to have the other. We’ve been over why there is not a correlation between working hard and having more money. The idea is disproven time and time again, even though it continues to be put forward is a reputable concept.

I would even put forward that, unless you’re in a flow state where time seems to slow down (and fly by at the same time) and it basically doesn’t even feel like work, even 8 hours a day is too much! If you’re consistently working 8 hours a day in a non-flow state, you need to look into how you can decrease your input (hours worked) while keeping your output (money in) the same or increasing it.

Almost everybody would like to be making more money, if they’re completely honest with themselves. But there are so many mindset problems that people have around money, how it’s made, and how you can get more of it.

Most importantly, you MUST know what motivates you, and be very clear about it. If you’re motivated by fast cars, great, use that! If you’re motivating by doing good, great, us that! With the correct motivation, you could do a lot more than you are doing, so the reality is that motivation is often a major missing piece of the puzzle.

In addition, don’t make the common mistake of equating hard work with money. The hardest workers in the world are not the richest. There’s simply not a correlation. Learn how to use tools effectively, be smart, and be willing to put in the hard work. But look at the hard work as just one aspect. The input (hard work) should be minimized and the output maximized.

People talk a big game. I’ve heard people talk about their “billion dollar idea,” but when asked if they’ve ever made $100 million, $1 million, $100,000, or even $10,00, the answer is no.

Success comes in steps, gradually and over time. And believe it or not, this is actually a really good thing. While there are examples of people who have become extremely successful nearly instantly, the large majority of them fell flat on their face immediately thereafter. When steps are skipped, smaller mistakes are skipped, which means you miss the opportunity to learn from small mistakes, and instead make big mistakes.

This is the value of taking the long-view in life. Try to become successful too fast, and you’re likely to fall flat on your face. Instead, strive to live each day better, to be more successful, to do better, slowly but gradually, and you’ll be surprised how far you get! Enjoy the journey!

Today’s rant is about this idea. The concept that you should fight the power. Or at least, fight to think outside the status quo of the power. Today’s episode is about the book “Love is a Story” by Robert J. Sternberg, which explores the way that the stories we mentally tell about ourselves and how love works controls the way we behave. This means that one of the most important things to look for in a potential partner is either the same, or a similar love story, so that your attitude and mindset will line up with each other.

So if it seems like no matter how hard you try, you cannot find the right person, it could be your stories aren’t lining up, or are simply too different. It’s a fascinating way to look at relationships and finding the perfect fit in a partner.

A lot of the discussion in entrepreneurial circles these days is about “the hustle.” The word “hustle” is a popular buzzword right now, but the truth is that it’s really only half, or probably much less than half, of what will make you successful!

Look around you: You can find people hustling, working extremely hard, but not getting ahead, everywhere. Hustle is clearly not the answer, and so much emphasis is put on it that people get led astray, thinking it’s all that they need. But if you’re hustling, doing the wrong thing, it doesn’t matter how hard you’re hustling, it’s still the wrong thing!

When you’re building a business, or as an entrepreneur just starting out in business, it’s easy to think that the employees you hire will have the same sort of passion, ingenuity, and drive for success that you do, but this is a mistake. Instead, start with the simple understanding and assumption that most people will be lazy, more mentally than physically. This means that you should start assuming that they will do the job wrong. This is not negativity, it’s realism.

Secondly, build a training system that ensures that, from day one, they have all of the education that they need at their fingertips. Then, systematically and regularly quiz them, to make sure that they fully, 100% know what they are doing. This is one of the most important aspects of building a company, and I wish someone had told me to do it a long time ago.

Sometimes, you just need to stand up for yourself. But we’re all raised in such a way that we tend to think that it’s always wrong to stand up for ourselves, to push back, or to be confrontational in any way. The truth is that, throughout history and today, being non-confrontational has been the cause of a lot of extra suffering. So stand up for yourself to avoid additional frustration and suffering in your own life!

A good rule to keep in mind is, in every interaction with anyone, start out nice, and then reciprocate whatever they give you. So if they continue to be friendly and nice, that should be your response. But if they get aggressive, you just might have to as well.

Work until what once seemed expensive now seems cheap. This is the name of the game, and the process of continuously leveling up your life through self-improvement. That process never ends, and no matter how much you learn, there will always be more to discover, to learn, and to improve.

At the end of the day, with most things in life, you simply get what you pay for. So be careful about cutting corners and trying to do things the cheap way. Often when you get something for free, free is the value you put on it, and so you don’t put in the effort that you would have if you had paid for it, and therefore you get minimal results.

Learn how to continually level up your life through investing in yourself through education and training, so that eventually what seemed expensive or difficult becomes cheap and easy.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a good day to reflect on what the definition of a hero is, and who is or can be a hero.

To me, the definition of a hero is somebody who can see ahead of the curve; somebody who can see things that other people either cannot, or choose not, to see.

When the status quo is strong in culture, such as segregation was during the days of Martin Luther King Jr., it can be extremely difficult to see past preconceived notions of how things should be.

But that’s exactly what makes a hero, and that is what we should be striving for in every individual area of our lives. So take a careful look at the status quo, and where it might be wrong. Examine your life, and work to take it to the next level in every area. Work towards becoming a hero.

Email marketing is far from dead. In fact, it’s still one of the most powerful ways to connect and communicate with a consumer. But too many people don’t know how to do it right. We throw the term “common sense” around a lot, and most people think, since it’s common, they must have it. The truth is very few people do, and those who do have acquired it through focused study and practice.

While there are certainly instances where this is not the case, they are rare, and the idea that you are responsible for your own destiny should be freeing, and exciting to you! While it’s easier to blame all of your problems on other people and other things outside of your control, the better, more freeing and more practical route is to take responsibility for your life, identify the things that you can change in your life, and then get to work changing them!

Not everybody gets to speak at the top university in the world.

Yet, leading up to my talk in Cambridge, all I could think about was the fact that I myself was a college dropout.

And make no mistake about it, college dropouts are foreign to Harvard.

Between Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Matt Damon and others, Harvard’s dropouts have been more successful than most other colleges' graduates.
