Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and one of the great American leaders.
His presidency was dominated by the American Civil War.
Abraham Lincoln was born on 12 February 1809 near Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was brought up in Kentucky,
Indiana and Illinois. His parents were poor pioneers and Lincoln was largely self-educated. In 1836, he qualified
as a lawyer and went to work in a law practice in Springfield, Illinois. He sat in the state legislature from 1834
to 1842 and in 1846 was elected to Congress, representing the Whig Party for a term. In 1856, he joined the new
Republican Party and in 1860 he was asked to run as their presidential candidate.
In the presidential campaign, Lincoln made his opposition to slavery very clear. His victory provoked a crisis,
with many southerners fearing that he would attempt to abolish slavery in the South. Seven southern states
left the Union to form the Confederate States of America, also known as the Confederacy. Four more joined
later. Lincoln vowed to preserve the Union even if it meant war. Fighting broke out in April 1861. Lincoln always
defined the Civil War as a struggle to save the Union, but in January 1863 he nonetheless issued the
Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in areas still under Confederate control. This was an
important symbolic gesture that identified the Union's struggle as a war to end slavery.
On 19 November 1863, Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of a cemetery at the
site of the Battle of Gettysburg, a decisive Union victory that had taken place earlier in the year.
On 9 April 1865, the Confederate general Robert E Lee surrendered, effectively ending the war. It had lasted for
more than four years and 600,000 Americans had died. Less than a week later, Lincoln was shot while attending
a performance at Ford's Theatre in Washington DC and died the next morning, 15 April 1865. His assassin, John
Wilkes Booth, was a strong supporter of the Confederacy.

Samsung Galaxy Note Review

Is Samsung Galaxy Note the ultimate offspring of thetablet and the phone, or a 5.3 inch pain for whichever pocket you keep it in? Let’s find out.

In the papers, Galaxy Note comes out as a screamer. It boasts of a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera and 16GB of internal storage, along with 4G capabilities which, as of now, is of no use in India. With a huge 5.3 inches screen the Note is closer to the tablet than the phone. It dwarfs the iPhone and Android beats around it.

I will start with the positives about the phone –

Samsung has modelled the Note on its highly successful Galaxy S II platform. Though it did the same with the Nexus, the Korean giant has added some noteworthy upgrades. The Galaxy Note has a greater battery, a higher-resolution display, and a cool S Pen stylus, thus, making it a lot more versatile than a simple oversized handset.

Playing games, watching videos and reading ebooks is quite a pleasure on the device. The HD Super AMOLED screen, which is large and bright, requires more power to run. However, since the Note is a lot bigger than regular phones, it could easily slip in a 2,500mAh battery. On one run of battery, you can watch more than 4.5 hours of videos, which is very good by any smartphone standard.

S- Memo Lite

One of my favorite features on the device is memo lite. Just double tap on the screen with the stylus and a small note app opens (good for using that stylus to scribble “date tonight at 8PM”).

Drawing or sketching

Now this was a feature which Samsung literally harped on, pushing in advertisements and developer’s kits. I was honestly let down by the feature as it was slow and kind of dragging. Lines and designs were unable to match up with my strokes and to add to that, it still lacks good sketching apps. The best one is Skitch by Evernote where the stylus and sketching features do come in handy if, by profession, you are an artist or a boss who loves to make those red circles.

Switch back to reality

Pretty girl who I met the other night and whose number I scribbled down on my Note – called me up. It was one long phone call which made me realize two “big” problems about the phone. First, it’s too big to hold in your palm and be on a call, not to forget it just looks funny that half of your face is covered by your phone. Secondly, like all the other smartphones, even the Note heats up when you go on a long phone call. So basically, it just heats half of you face (not a 'positive' warm feeling).

The phone call was followed by exchanging some messages with the pretty lady and that is when problem of typing with one hand occurred, you have to use two hands on the Note to type. Most of us will not prefer that considering the number of things we juggle are too many, and only two hands to manage them.

I did like the stylus on the phone, but one drawback is that the buttons on the phone are not mated to stylus, which means you have to use your fingers in between if you need those keys to go back in a browser or home screen.

I would have said “Happy Noting” but for the final nail in the coffin – Size. I can keep the phone in my shirt pocket but it won’t fit in completely and there will always be the danger of it falling off or being flicked out. Slipping it into your jeans or trouser pocket will make you uncomfortable while walking. Hence, unless you wear jackets all the time or you are ok with the idea of holding your phone in your hand like your girl holds that clutch (purse), the Note is not for you. Thank you Samsung for a wonderful device, but I will still buy an Ice-cream sandwich loaded Galaxy Nexus or Tab instead of the Note.

towards your hands and feet. This affects the digestion of the food and can further lead to more health issues. Experts recommend that you wait for around half an hour before you take a shower after having meal.

Gravity plays its part here. As soon as you lie down, the digestive juices start flowing away from the stomach, and this can cause intestinal inflammation.

This is the reason why people feel a burning sensation in their mouth if they sleep immediately after a heavy meal. By sleeping after eating, you are only putting additional pressure on your diaphragm.

India Gate

India Gate in New Delhi is an imposing 42 meters high arch and was designed by the famous architect Edwin Lutyens. India’s historical tableau is sated with defining moments which had an everlasting impact on the nation and there are many stories that continue to stir our hearts every time we hear them.

The history of this country serves as a lesson to trillions of people. Some of the moments in this nation’s parable which cannot be forgotten include:

1. October 27, 1947

Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir and Governor-General Lord Louis Mountbatten signed the papers for the accession of Kashmir. Since then, Kashmir has been a disputed state and had led to as many as 4 wars between India and Pakistan.

2. November 26 1949

BR Ambedkar, Chairman of the Drafting committee of 308 members that was preparing the constitution of India, presented a fully drafted Constitution and it was passed on November 26, 1949. That constitution has since ranked as the best constitution in the world.

3. January 1952

India’s first General Election was held at this time. The election was left open for more than 175 million Indians across the country, with a large percentage of them being uneducated.

4. State Reorganization Act, 1956

This act entailed the reorganization of states based on language. Potti Sriramulu’s fast facilitated a new plan for uniting India based on Linguistic lines, rather than ethnicity or religion. In 1964, India’s map was redrawn by coalescing people with same language into separate sovereign states.

5. First Nuclear Test, 1974

India’s first nuclear explosion Pokhran 1 was launched. It paved way to Pokhran in 1998.

6. June 1991

This year is marked by India’s Economic Liberalization. Owing to Rajiv Gandhi’s efforts, the License Raj ended in India accompanied by lowering of Central taxes.

7. Telecom revolution. 1995

This is the year when owning a personal phone became possible for the aam admi. The privatization of the telecom sector took place in the November 1994 and the act of revenue sharing between the government and the telecom operators was passed in 1999.

8. 1998: Formation of the Task Force

This was the first step in India’s IT revolution. The Government of India formed the National IT Task Force in 1998.

9. US signs nuclear deal with India. July 18, 2005

After the administration of United States of America determined that India is a responsible nuclear weapons power, it signed a nuclear deal in July to indicate that the earlier bans no longer withstood.

10. 26th November 2008

This day saw possibly the worst terrorist attack ever on Indian soil. Mumbai hotels were under siege for three days by terrorists from Pakistan who killed hundreds of people. The India-Pakistan ties severed badly after this event.

3. Why is your mind always diverted towards sex?

Here comes confession time and I hope all guys reading this would agree to my declaration—Men are God-tuned to be always disposed towards sex. It is something that we cannot help. Just

like the advantage of multiple orgasms and childbirth was God-gifted to women, Men were blessed (or cursed) with a pre-occupation with everything sexual. 5. How come you never compliment me for my hair?

Unless, she has done something drastically different to her hair or at least gotten streaks or something clearly visible, are we even suppose to concentrate upon it? Just think about it—there is so much more to

Women need to realize that we really don’t bother about their hair that much. The same goes for their eyebrows and the color of their nail-paint. Added to that, 2 years (or more) of experiential learning, combined with a meaningful syllabus that will stamp them with more than an MBA - a holistic sense of place in the field of management.

Guided by giant, full page ads in India's leading newspapers, they decide to "think beyond the IIMs".

Which is why, in the tradition of our love for myth-busting, a blunt look at a controversial management institute named IIPM is needed.

An IIPM MBA is Controversial

In the succinct words of UGC vice-chairman Ved Prakash said. “It is indulging in cheating”, referring to IIPM "advertising its courses by using the name of UGC, MHRD and AICTE,…” There is also the Careers 360 expose of the IIPM degree, offered by IMI, in Belgium.

According to Rudy Derdelinckx, Director, NVAO (their version of the the UGC/AICTE,it recognizes educational institutions and degrees in Belgium): “IMI Belgium is not a recognised higher education institution either in the Dutch or the French speaking part of Belgium. Since it is not recognised, it cannot award recognised degrees. BBA and MBA degrees cannot be awarded legitimately. Graduates that use the title Bachelor or Master can even be prosecuted. Using those titles without holding a legitimate degree is illegal…According to our Constitution, everyone can set up an institution and offer education. But to be a higher education institution and award degrees, you need to be recognised. To be recognised, the institution’s programmes need to be accredited and the institution needs to be registered. Only then the institution is included on the official register…"

Some of Its Publicized Placements are Not Real

Barclays denies any campus placements with IIPM - "We at Barclays in Dubai have not done any campus placement with this institute." So does Deutsche Bank - "Deutsche Bank has no association with IIPM in terms of campus placements…"

Nothing to do with Stanford or Chicago B-School

Regarding a certified executive education program with Stanford University. According to Gale Bitter, Associate Dean and Director, “This claim is false…Neither the Stanford Graduate School of Business nor the office of Stanford Executive Education has ties of any kind with the IIPM.”

IIPM's had announced a "compulsory International Residency Program on Advanced Global Management…at the Graduate School of Business, University Chicago." Soon after, CBS wrote to IIPM, stating: "We kindly ask that all mention of Chicago GSB being a part of this Advanced Global Management program be immediately removed from all pages of IIPM’s sites."

And according to research done by MBA Channel, "The Haas School has asked IIPM to take the Haas/UC Berkeley logo off its web site and marketing materials and to correct its language regarding the certificate of completion and the credits. The Center for Executive Education does not offer credits, only a certificate of completion with respect to the segment of the program that it has taught."

IIPM is facing Legal Action

New students who had taken loans to attend IIPM found out that they had been enrolled for a correspondence course. According to them:

"…In January, we came across a Supreme Court order that said colleges in one state cannot be affiliated to universities in another state for regular courses. When we confronted the college authorities, we found it was a correspondence course we were studying. During the exams, you only needed to pay Rs 50 for what was called an ‘open book exam’. Students could look into the textbooks and write the exam,” said a student to the Bangalore Mirror.
