'Blade Runner 2049'

Quite possibly the most expensive, lavish, aesthetically indulgent arthouse film that will ever be made? Roger Deakins is no doubt the protagonist here - every camera move, every splash of colour, every glint in a character's eye, all carefully informed by a master cinematographer working with carte blanche and visual splendor as studio priority number one.

Spared No Expense. Seriously, a more unabashedly facemelting film may never be released. Just give this category to BLADE RUNNER 2049 every single year.

Biggest Surprise

'Get Out'

Jordan Peele is a talented comedian and hilarious sketch comedy writer. However, in 12 short months, GET OUT has become one of the finest horror movies in recent memory and nothing short of the most important film of 2017.

Immortalizing itself into the lexicon of African-American culture and the on-screen representation of black men, Peele has created a brilliant and startling piece of what is now dubbed "social horror". But in the end, all is in service to reveal what is the biggest surprise of the year: the silly little horror film you think you're watching is actually a razor sharp, and finely tuned racial commentary.

Biggest Disappointment

'Alien: Covenant'

Ridley Scott is quickly becoming the new George Lucas. A filmmaker who frequently seems to misunderstand his own work, or seemingly whatever motivates his creative choices. Only as good as the script he is working from, Scott cares little for things like overarching continuity or logical character behaviour unless the screenplay calls for them. 

In the sad case of ALIEN: COVENANT, John Logan and Dante Harper have discharged a severely undercooked, slimy and infected screenplay with no respect for any investment we may have for the other dark corners of the geek-coveted Alien universe. All of the answers we are given are inconsequential. All of the questions we are meant to be asking are irrelevant. 

With that being said, where else can you watch Michael Fassbender blow himself while doing the fingering at the same time?

Best Old Film of the Year

'Under the Skin'

One of the greatest films of the 21st century. Full stop on that one. Science fiction and abstract art don't get any better than this, and Jonathan Glazer's mesmerizing alien invasion(?) experience UNDER THE SKIN exists behind a seemingly endless number of layered interpretations.

It feels really good when you get the sense that a filmmaker is way more intelligent than you are. Any idiot can be handed an answer and feel pretty smart about it. However, holding an audience to a higher expectation always pays in higher reward; here with the dividend of abstract thought materializing into a powerful statement on female objectification and exploiting the hypnotic power of feminine sexuality.

Christopher Nolan has long been a cinematic traditionalist as well as an advocate for the preservation and continued use of celluloid in Hollywood film production.

Consequently, Nolan is against the idea that you are ever truly seeing what you're getting on a digital monitor during principal photography. Filmmakers huddling inside dark cathedrals lined with TV screens have appropriately nicknamed these safe spaces "video villages".

According to Christopher Nolan's frequent collaborator (you da real MVP of the Dark Knight Trilogy) Wally Pfister:

"We are very very low tech and Chris loves it that way. He loves the simplicity of that kind of filmmaking. There is no video village at all. Speaking of technology, Chris runs around with a little tiny Panasonic battery powered monitor."

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I proudly introduce the Casio EV4500 Wireless LCD TV. Very affordable. Looks like you can nab this badboy for as little as 75 bucks.

Believe it or not, these ghetto ass looking things were 'only' released in 2003.

As soon as principal photography begins on a new chapter of the Nolanverse, all main production cameras are are fitted with a short range, UHF/VHF video transmitter. Using his adorable little Casio screen, this arrangement allows C.Nol to preview multiple camera angles in real time, right there on his handy little TV necklace for nerds.

Essentially a clever and convenient reference tool for camera composition and shot framing, this really IS some low tech shit, just like Pfister said. Bruce Wayne would be embarrassed.

Go Chris! You're rocking that Necklace TV!

Most film directors prefer to be photographed in their native habitat doing the "Finger Framing Manoeuvre". For example, Al Hitchcock.

Christopher Nolan, as we have demonstrated, shows us that this approach is played out AF; opting for his own personal TV screen in contrast to the traditional caveman hand gestures.

That said, it must also be mentioned with a sense of irony that C.Nol's general aversion to digital cinema, Netflix and watching 70MM films on a 5" mobile display is in direct opposition to the way he actually shoots his films.

While it might be okay to oversee an IMAX production through a postage stamp sized display, you yourself run the risk of serious prison time if you even DARE experience Christopher Nolan films on anything other than projected across the side of a full moon. 

Without getting into further silliness, it is not difficult to imagine that most production cameras these days could be retrofitted with a WiFi video transmitter; thereby allowing any tablet or mobile device to serve the same purpose as the Casio EV4500. amirite?

Nolan just loves his familiar gadgets I guess. We all work better in our comfort zone, don't we?

So the next time you are close to a Christopher Nolan movie set (be careful for guard dogs & laser nets), why not try scanning through the UHF / VHF channels to get a direct feed into one of the most secretive filmmakers in the industry today.

There is a certain phenomenon that I feel impelled to remark on. It occurs in the dark, where no one can see who started it, and amongst strangers, so one can be assured there is no predetermined or even singular motivation at play save for 'monkey see, monkey do'. I find it confusing at best, and foolish at worst. 

I am talking, of course, about CATMT (Clapping At The Movie Theatre). 

Whenever this comes up, my reaction is invariably the same question: why?! This seems like bizarre behaviour. As far as I am aware, applause, or 'showing approval or praise by clapping,' is used to signal to an individual or group that their work or message is agreeable, and to be celebrated.

Applauding a stage performance signals actors and stage crew, for example. Cheering for a band or a sports team, clapping after a speech or at a rally, all of these signal to the subject that we are in agreement. At fireworks displays we alert the pyrotechnic engineers that they have, in fact, succeeded in blowing our collective socks off.

When we clap at a movie, however, all we are doing is clapping in the dark at what Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes might call "an inanimate FUCKING object!"

Is this an attempt at a bonding experience between the two-hundred-something strangers who want to communicate their shared enjoyment of the film? If so, I would definitely advise against it, since it assumes everyone in the theatre agrees--unlikely.

For the same reason, I have heard it argued that one might applaud at a midnight screening of a particular favorite film. Certainly this occurs regularly, though I would disagree that it is acceptable, instead pointing to the likelihood of attendees having consumed something which might impede their feelings of embarrassment.

Plus this would be even more redundant; we know you like the movie, that's why you've paid to see it again.

Another related, though different, phenomenon is CWTPL (Clapping When The Plane Lands). The issue with CWTPL, in my opinion, is that it is an overreaction to the successful performance of an essential element of the pilot's job. A simple 'thank you' upon exiting the aircraft seems sufficient when the captain and crew have not provided any service above or beyond what is expected with purchase of a ticket.

A possible exception may be if the motivation is excitement upon arrival at one's destination; a bachelorette party arriving in Vegas, say, or a small plane touching down in the tropics after multiple delays. These could be considered logical. 

Like CWTPL, CATMT also has an exception: if one is attending a screening of the film at which members of the cast or crew will be present, then applause is certainly warranted. Clap away. You may even see someone stand, turn, and acknowledge the crowd! This is applause functioning as we as a society agree it should. Look at us go.

So, Vertical Viewers, I have thus far assumed none of you to be sufferers of this Gonorrhea of the Cinema, presuming you are wise enough to keep the clap where it belongs. 

I have taken several informal polls of laughably small sample sizes, and received some mixed responses, but I still feel safely in the majority in this regard.

Aside from the wanton, gratuitous violence and an alarmingly cavalier use of the N-word, ex-Blockbuster Video store manager Quentin Tarantino has always trademarked his screenplays with cool, conversational dialogue laden with disagreements over film, TV, music and comic book trivialities.

In what is effectively a dry run for his signature style of writing, this obsession with pop culture can be traced all the way back to the god damn prologue of Tarantino's brilliant debut feature: RESERVOIR DOGS.

It seems that, back in 1984 we all misunderstood the true meaning of Madonna's hit single 'Like a Virgin'.

Overcome with a fierce desire for one of his characters to share some insight into a so-called "metaphor for big dicks", our boy Q.T. decides that it can only be he, himself that delivers this career table setting monologue. 

In a similar fashion, PULP FICTION kicks off with a discussion between mob hitmen Jules and Vincent - "What do they call a Quarter Pounder in Paris?" - a segment that ultimately does nothing more than juxtapose the detached, nonchalant nature in which these assholes carry out their brutal killings.

And then there is the foot massage shit. I don't have the stomach to even dare analyze Quentin Tarantino's nasty foot fetish here.

After establishing a solid Bro-ship with Tony Scott during the production of the world's finest BADLANDS ripoff: TRUE ROMANCE, it only became a matter of time before Tarantino would be called upon again.

So when the script for the Naval submarine thriller CRIMSON TIDE came in, everybody knew the one thing missing was a comprehensive debate over the justification of $5.00 milkshakes. The solution was obvious. Quentin Tarantino needed to give the screenplay a nice little pop culture punch-up.

Or, as Q.T. likes to call it: "the ol' Royale with Cheese".

The strong scent of Tarantino dialogue first makes an entrance as James Gandolfini's character Dougherty enjoys a submarine movie trivia quiz with "Wepps" aka Aragorn aka Viggo Mortensen.

Tarantino takes this opportunity to name drop some of his favourite old-school actors and the submarine movies that likely lined the walls of his beloved Blockbuster video outlet.

Pretty good I guess, if completely disposable. It's not difficult to imagine Naval Officers as fans of the WWII submarine movie genre though.

Here is "the guy with the ears and the little moustache". (BTW, it's actually Clark Gable).

However, in what is easily the highest profile Tarantino dialogue sighting in CRIMSON TIDE, one needs to look no further than a furious scuffle that occurs in the galley between Petty Officer Rivetti played by Jack Dawson sidekick Danny Nucci, and some meathead named Bennefield.

Evidently, all the producers knew about this section of the film was that two crewmates get into a fight for some reason and Denzel Washington's character Hunter needs to demonstrate his likable leadership style.

"HEY QUENTIN! What are these two characters fighting about?"

Silver Surfer comics of course! More specifically, whether or not the original Jack Kirby style is superior to the Mœbius version.

Confronting Rivetti, Hunter inquires as to the nature of the fisticuffs.

Some stankyyy Tarantino dialogue isn't it? It can't be denied that giving a sporadically placed loudspeaker to Tarantino's unmistakable voice does frequently come across as disingenuous, and it is somewhat hard to buy Denzel Washington's Hunter as an actual comic book fan.

This exchange does come back around for some decent payoff, as Rivetti later gets a solid punch to Bennefield's nose and gives him an appropriate nickname of "Mœbius".

You be the judge. Here is the Kirby version of Silver Surfer:

And here is the style employed by Mœbius aka Jean Giraud.

I guess it is blasphemy to badmouth the fabled Jack Kirby, creator of every superhero on earth, however the Mœbius shit looks off the chainnnn. 

Finally, we have by far the laziest and most shoehorned pop culture reference of the entire film in which Hunter desperately needs Petty Officer Vossler to fix the radio. With seemingly no way to interact with his crew other than via film & TV nostalgia, we get this painful exchange.

Just ghastly, juvenile shit really.

So are you happy with Tarantino's additions to the CRIMSON TIDE script? Do they add anything to the overall story or tone of the movie? Rumours are, Denzel Washington certainly wasn't happy. But this was primarily due to Tarantino's startling comfort level for dropping N-Bombs. This is a TMZ-style tale for another day perhaps.

It must be mentioned that the legendary Robert Towne was also emergency dialed in the middle of the night for last minute screenplay polishes which, primarily include an exquisitely philosophical and politically charged dinner scene. Strong candidate for the best dialogue in the entire film. With all due respect to Q-Tar, of course.

In the end, we can make no mistake, Quentin Tarantino is a lyrical wordsmith and a vital lens through which pop culture can reflect back on itself. His voice is distinctly American and forever steeped in a loving awareness of nostalgic influences that comes through in all of his work.

Making a superhero movie is hard. Making a good superhero movie? You can pretty much forget it. The transition process from comic strip to film strip typically proves to be more arduous than few are willing to bargain for, despite the fact that graphic novels are essentially in film storyboard format already.

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe blasted off with 2008's IRON MAN, it became clear that society needed (and was going to fucking get) a standalone THOR origin picture.

But who the hell could possibly pull this off without making it look sillier than an extremely low-turnout LARPing jamboree in Acton, Ontario?

KENNETH "SHAKESPEARE" BRANAGH that's god damn who.

In a 2010 interview with Geoff Boucher of Hero Complex, KennyB admits to being a fan of Thor comics as a youngster.

"Inspired by the comic book world both pictorially and compositionally at once, we've tried to find a way to make a virtue and a celebration of the distinction between the worlds that exist in the film but absolutely make them live in the same world.

It's about finding the framing style, the color palette, the texture and the amount of camera movement that helps celebrate and express the differences and the distinctions in those worlds. If it succeeds, it will mark this film as different...."

Here, our boy Kenny mentions "composition" as well as "framing style" in effort to mark his entry into the MCU as unique and different from the other 178,000 films that he surely knew were sliding down the greased up Disney pipeline.

This can only mean one thing: DUTCH ANGLE THE SHIT OUT OF IT boys!

Noun (plural Dutch angles)

A cinematic tactic achieved by tilting the camera off to the side. The shot is composed with the horizon not parallel with the bottom of the frame. The technique is often used to portray the psychological uneasiness of the subject being filmed.  

Simply tilt your camera left or right by about 35 degrees and suddenly your movie is going to slide right off this flat earth we all live on.

But you can use it for interior shots too!

Or like this!

Might as well be a drinking game.

In fact, if you consistently keep your eyes peeled for these types of crooked shots, this film skirts dangerously close to parodytown. SNL Digital Shorts really missed the boat on this one.

Can we get a Ryan Gosling skit where he wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, panicking about the overuse of dutch angles in THOR?

Listen, we've all agreed that Kenneth Branagh's first and only foray into superhero filmmaking is ultimately a middling and passable (if forgettable) superhero film. But, part of me feels bad for even chirping it; THOR may perhaps be the most charmingly quaint and harmless of all the Marvel movies.

SWISS ARMY MAN is a fantastically imaginative tribal chant to ward off the spirits of loneliness and mental illness. A folk song to friendship and the human spirit. 

Rude, touching and incredibly sweet, while somehow remaining poignant, sorrowful and extremely moving. 

Letting your true feelings slip out is always silent, but deadly. 

"There is a fart in this film for everyone". 

Biggest Disappointment

'Suicide Squad'

Here lies some of the most chaotic, confused and sloppy editing ever seen in a big budget film. Looks like someone accidentally hit the SHUFFLE button on an iPod Classic from 2003. 

Also, these henchmen are basically Putties from fucking Power Rangers.

Best Old Film of the Year

'Incendies'

While our lord and saviour Denis Villenueve continues to dominate Hollywood, his back catalogue is chock full of absolute barn-burners. Chief among them is INCENDIES which contains what is most likely the greatest Radiohead needle drop in film history.

Rattling like a freight train to a completely soul-scorching finale, this is a strong candidate for the greatest Canadian film ever made.

Worst Film of the Year

'Independence Day: Resurgence'

This one is just downright humiliating for everyone involved and Peter Berg's masterpiece BATTLESHIP never looked so good.

On the bright side, Roland Emmerich appears to have finally run out of ways to smash apart the planet. "Get ready for a close encounter, bitch!"

How in the name of Dr. Ian Malcolm did JURASSIC WORLD become one of the most popular films ever made? A true joke to hardcore JP fans everywhere, Colin Trevorrow's rebootquel is utterly lifeless and sterile. We deserve better.

Best Old Film of the Year

'The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension'

Hey, hey, hey, hey-now. Don't be mean; we don't have to be mean, cuz, remember, no matter where you go, there you are. 

Worst Film of the Year

'Terminator: Genisys'
