I’ve been seeing a lot of black with brown in my neighborhood, and I’ve been meaning to share it with you…

And then I stumbled across this painting! I’ve been having quite the run of good luck with paintings corresponding with my “real life” sightings; I think that’s a good sign.

The first brown and black sightings I made were of women wearing a brown skirt or pair of pants with pretty much everything else in black. A scarf with the two colors, or a pair of earrings in onyx and tiger’s eye, served to pull together everything and make it look intentional:

I particularly admired this dressy version:

A brown dress might be a fun way to experiment with brown; add a scarf and earrings, and your black “regulars” take on a new look:

This heroine has a clear affinity to square motifs! And don’t forget – when you’re looking for a scarf, check the men’s department; they’re often much less expensive than “women’s” scarves, and they have color combinations that we don’t always see in the “heroine’s” department!

Let’s flip this idea on it’s head – you wear lots and lots of brown, but seldom wear black. Maybe adding a simple, timeless dress will open new “outfit doors” for you:

Some of you have been over the Seasalt Cornwall website with a fine-tooth comb! There have been questions about how to incorporate Fair Isle sweaters into a wardrobe, so I’m going to address one of the (at least) three Fair Isle sweaters I see there.

This sweater is lovely, and the colors are unusual:

Sweater – Seasalt Cornwall

Our friend who wants to buy this sweater is interested in using it as the fulcrum around which she will assemble a small autumn wardrobe. She only needs clothes for weekends, and an occasional week night, so she feels like the Slot Machine will work for her…

Just as a reminder, this is our plan:

Pants are pretty straightforward – taupe, olive, and my favorite ivory cords!

Handbag – The Sak; olive earrings – Talbots; tan jeans – Coldwater Creek; ivory corduroy pants – Coldwater Creek; thyme green pants – L.L.Bean; boots – Bella Vita; socks – Talbots

I grabbed my favorite (not cheap!) silk shirt for this heroine, as well as simple tee and a cotton turtleneck. If you’re going to have a group of clothes in the colors of a sweater, it makes sense to grab the matching scarf! Although – interestingly – the scarf is bound in burgundy, while the cardigan is bound in green. I like this little change of pace!

Finally, let’s get our friend some second layers! The pink jumps into this wardrobe like Barbie at a hunting lodge… But why not? Changes of pace and mood are important to some of us, right?

Our Slot Machine might be pushing the limits of what’s possible. Would you wear the pink cardigan and the fig turtleneck together? I think – if I had the triangle scarf – I would be okay with it. But it IS out of the ordinary…

Because I tossed all kinds of accessories into this wardrobe, I thought that it was worth looking at everything in a more relaxed and expected layout. The pink cardigan still sticks out – to me – buy there’s nothing wrong with wardrobe outliers. So long as you wear things and love them, let them “outlie!”

Our friend has plenty of outfit possibilities – certainly enough to get through weekends! Even a three-day weekend would be easy with this capsule wardrobe:

More and more, I suspect that my next travel capsule wardrobe is going to be a Slot Machine. Or a Sloth Machine, given my very relaxed travel habits!

Always a favorite post for me! It takes HOURS and HOURS to find things that even come close to the “new” colors, but it’s always weirdly fun…

I’m a weirdly fun woman!

First, a painting that I’ve seen a few times in the last few weeks, which reminded me of these colors:

What’s the point of an accent color, anyway?

For me, when you have all of the core colors of your wardrobe chosen, and you own sufficient neutral things to be able to get dressed every day without effort, it’s time for accent!

Maybe you already own a single item or two in a color that you’ve always liked, but never really made a focal point.

Maybe it’s a color that you loved as a child.

Maybe it’s a color that matches your favorite flower. Or food. Or painting.

Maybe it just catches your eye, and your imagination lights up when you think of the possibilities.

Autumn shopping – so much fun, so much stress!

When in doubt, don’t.

Take the time and effort to figure out what you need, what you REALLY want, and how it can be happily integrated into your wardrobe.

One among you is longing for this skirt, to use as a “keynote” item for a quick weekend trip with her sweetheart. She’s a big fan of crewneck sweaters, button-front shirts, and flowers…

So first let’s admire this lovely thing:

She likes the Slot Machine approach to packing for a long weekend, so let’s start there:

First – the sweaters! Simple, classic, in her three main wardrobe colors. And to make it just a bit romantic – a beautiful rose brooch and pink pearl earrings:

Now that she has the top layers in hand, she looks for three shirts. And when she stumbles across another floral brooch, she doesn’t hesitate!

The more I work with this Slot Machine template, the more I like it. Maybe Paris in December will be based on this… maybe TWO groupings of nine?

I finally remember why Seasalt Cornwall ISN’T a strange brand to me – there’s one on the main shopping street where my uncle lives in England!  I’m occasionally crazy, but I’m not completely gone. Yet…

So one of you – at least – has a longing for this sweater, and isn’t at all certain if it will work for her. My first instinct: if you have brown in your closet already, this sweater is going to fit in like it was born there!

Maybe our heroine is headed to Garrett County Maryland, for the Autumn Glory Festival?

At any rate, she’s got a long weekend of “leaf peeping” ahead, and wants to build a tiny travel capsule wardrobe around this lovely sweater…

She decides to use the 9-Piece Slot Machine of Clothes to plan her travel wardrobe. Who are we kidding – she asked my advice, and I’m a big fan of this system!

She’s assured me that she doesn’t need to dress up at all, so we’re planning on three pairs of pants. A brown or rust skirt could easily be substituted here – maybe denim, or corduroy? The posh among us could find something perfect in leather or suede…

The turquoise seems like a color outlier, until you remember that one of the things that makes autumn leaves seem so vivid is a striking blue sky above them! Yes, the sky is rarely turquoise, but the “color combination idea” is the same…

As we did on Wednesday, we’re again going to give this heroine three different styles of “second layer” – a crewneck (which could also be a v-neck), a cardigan, and a vest.

My instincts tell me that this wardrobe isn’t 100% foolproof, but I can’t put my finger on an inherently bad combination…

Our heroine is driving up (we assume she’s going to mountains somewhere) on Friday morning, and then returning home Sunday afternoon. In theory, three outfits is a TON – but if the weather turns, or she gets a wild hair to stay over an extra day – she’s well equipped to do so!

Monday, I’m going to share a skirt that’s captured someone’s eye, and figure out how to wear it for yet another weekend trip…

Oh, so MANY of us right now are seeing lots of things that tempt us – my email is full of queries about what to buy, what to ignore, and what’s not to be missed!

How did Monday’s heroine miss this cardigan? If it’s still around by mid-October, when she next shops, I suspect she may have to have it!

Cardigan – J.Crew

This particular heroine is heading to her college homecoming – just for Friday night arriving late, and then Saturday night, departing Sunday after brunch.

Yes, her college’s “colors” are black and red…

She knows she doesn’t need to pack much, and so she decides to go with a foolproof approach to packing:

She starts with pants and skirts – no jeans, but cotton twill pants, and corduroy pants, are good substitutes that are plenty casual. And she chooses to pack a skirt because she plans for a nice dinner Saturday night. Others may wish to go hang out at the college bar, and try to recreate their lost youth. She would rather have a lovely meal!

She doesn’t have any trouble picking tops – except she makes the wild choice to include a striped shirt in the same capsule as a printed sweater!

Of course she can wear them together. It’s not always guaranteed that two prints will look good together, but in this particular case, she’s on safe ground:

And finally, she chooses her last two “second layers.” I really like to mix-up the styles of theses three – a cardigan, a vest, and a crewneck or v-neck pullover give you a variety of looks…

When you put these 9 pieces of clothing into the slot machine template, you can see that our heroine has more different outfits possible than she could wear in a month! (that’s assuming that she would wear her cardigan with no top under it, and that she wouldn’t need to layer her striped sweater either)

Our heroine will, of course, do as all wise heroines do, and assemble (at least in her mind!) a number of outfits. There’s no harm in planning, and possibly much to be gained!

I’m pondering something very much like this if I go to Paris in December… hmm…

Almost halfway through September, and in Chicago, we’re still wearing linen…

But our most elegant heroine, the architectural historian, is preparing to spend the autumn semester in Paris, teaching!

She shops VERY carefully, and bases her personal style on this most gorgeous painting of two saints:

She currently has this 36-piece wardrobe, which she could just toss into a (really big) suitcase and be just fine!

She will need another bag for her accessories, but they’re what really makes this wardrobe sing:

She would like another skirt, and a couple more sweaters. When she saw this classic black jacket, she knew what her plan would be for the month:

Her wardrobe tucks neatly into the 56-piece wardrobe template. Are we at ALL surprised?

This is how her 40-piece wardrobe looks. She might not pack EVERY piece here, but if she has the luggage, and will have the storage space in her temporary apartment, there’s no reason not to!

The weather could get really warm. Even in Paris. Even in the autumn…

Similarly, she could leave her sandals, and her gold straw handbag, at home… It all depends on luggage, closet space, and weather forecasts. Not the easiest decision!

So our heroine hand-washed her new sweaters, and steamed the daylights out of her jacket and her new skirt. 

The she opened a bottle of something delicious, put on some glorious music, and tried on new outfits:

Just give me the job, and the apartment in Paris, and the suitcases…

But I want to bring Belovedest with me!!!

Before we visit our heroine the wildlife statistical analyst, let’s spend just a second admiring her favorite photograph:

One of the things that our heroine really likes about Common Shelducks is the high-contrast juxtaposition of colors on their body. She’s keeping that in mind this month when she shops!

Right now, after her August shopping, her current wardrobe looks like this – certainly a wardrobe that would get you through quite a bit of time, or a VERY long trip:

These accessories are delicious…

Maybe it’s because it’s September, and maybe there’s some magical, hidden fashion reason, but there’s a lot of brown clothing available right now! Our heroine decides to take a look at where she stands with brown…

She only has six brown garments! That seems like something she could augment this month:

Our heroine was thinking about contrast, and so when she saw stripes in two of her wardrobe colors, she was sold! She fills in the gaps with solid pieces and the right accessories:

At some point, our heroine needs to either find a few more second layers, or decide that she doesn’t need as many as the template suggests. Remember – templates are ideas, not rules!

And when our heroine puts her new things into her closet, she can clearly see lots of ways to get dressed; it’s not as if the relatively few second layers is a problem for her:

Her accessories just keep getting better and better. I’m SUCH a sucker for these things!

After her new clothes are home and clean, our heroine indulges in a brief orgy of trying-on! The pleasure of new clothes should last a long time – the entire season, at least:

If I had to start from scratch, and I had to choose one of this year’s six wardrobes, I think this would be my choice.

Our heroine the professional listener had great luck last month finding some brown clothes – maybe this month she will have luck with teal?

But first, let’s look at the painting which is her inspiration. The art will endure long after all of our wardrobes have been dispersed to the winds…

After she bought her dark brown garments last month, this is her (currently 36-piece) wardrobe:

And these are her accessories. I swear, I could wear the same clothes every day if I had the right accessories!

The morning of our heroine’s shopping adventure for September, she pulled out of her closet all of her greenish, teal-ish, aqua-ish clothes.

There’s one big gap – she doesn’t have a pair of pants in this color! Otherwise, it seems a reasonable assortment of accent garments:

Our heroine decided to take a look at Seasalt Cornwall… And found a ton of things she liked, that are just about the perfect color!

She pondered finding a pair of teal shoes, and she’s still not opposed to the idea. But she was pretty smitten with the possibilities of a brown shirtdress, and the brown shoes just called her name… That happens!

Is she sticking with her plan? I’d say so… She will need to pick up another top eventually, if she wants to fill in her 56-piece wardrobe template EXACTLY according to plan:

Her closet looks quite a bit brighter with this latest infusion of her accent color!

And her accessories are gorgeous!

When her new purchases are all in her home, she takes the time to launder things (wearing new clothes without laundering is icky – take it from someone who worked in retail for ages…) and then to try everything on with her existing clothes:

I could live for a long time with this wardrobe – maybe the highlights in my hair could be teal instead of purple?

Our bank employee has stumbled into a perfect bunch of things for her wardrobe… It’s nice that colors come and go, so all of us get a chance to buy what we most love!

Our heroine’s favorite painting is this beauty:

She had assembled a 36-piece capsule wardrobe for work by the end of August. She’s so busy studying everything she can find about banking and finance that she’s not interested in spending a lot of time worrying about what to wear!

She’s delighted that she’s taken the time to find excellent accessories! Having these things in her wardrobe make her morning much simpler:

Shopping was stressful for our banker this month, because she found SO MUCH that fits her wardrobe really well! Eileen Fisher dedicated much of her September release to shades of blue and green, and then Seasalt Cornwall shows up with THREE pieces in this amazing print. (it would have been possible to spend thousands from their new offerings…)

She’s a bit irked that the top looks SO crinkled, but she also understands that she can give this a good steam and it won’t look quite so… squished.

And perfect earrings. Well, they’re clip-ons, but she can have that changed pretty simply. There are people in any city who will add posts to earrings for a reasonable fee. Bless people who do these finicky but SO helpful projects!

The 56-piece template is our heroine’s guideline. So far, she’s adhered to it quite faithfully, and her wardrobe shows her planning:

But woman does not dress from a template! When she puts her clothes into her closet, they look both coherent and inspiring – what better could you say about your wardrobe?

Of course her new accessories blend in beautifully, but they also stand out just a bit – how could you NOT want green loafers?

When this heroine goes shopping, she has clear goals in mind, and she already knows HOW she’s going to wear her purchases. But she still comes home and tries on complete outfits – you can miss something that’s a real deal-breaker if you don’t put clothes ON YOUR BODY. Photographs are great, but they aren’t the same…
