Ever been scrolling through Facebook Marketplace or eBay, found what looks like the perfect gadget or a unique gift, and clicked 'Buy Now'? You pay a reasonable £25, the seller's location says they're just down the road in Cardiff or Bristol, but then the delivery estimate is... four weeks?

If this sounds familiar, you've likely encountered a dropship middleman.

Here in Maesteg, like everywhere else across the UK, we're all looking for a good deal online. But a growing trend is making it harder to know if you're getting value for your money or simply being overcharged. It's time to talk about dropshipping and how you can become a savvier shopper.

What Exactly is a Dropship Middleman?

In simple terms, a dropship middleman is a seller who lists products they don't actually own or have in stock.

Here's how their business model works:

They find a cheap product on a huge online marketplace like AliExpress, Temu, or Shein (let's say a novelty lamp for £5).
They copy the photos and description, often making them sound more appealing.
They list that same lamp on a platform you trust, like eBay, Amazon, Etsy, or even their own slick-looking website, but for a much higher price (e.g., £25).
When you buy it from them, they take your £25, use £5 of it to order the lamp from the original supplier in China, and have it shipped directly to your address.
They pocket the £20 difference without ever touching, seeing, or quality-checking the product.

While not illegal, this practice creates several problems for you, the buyer.

The Red Flags: Why You Need to Be Cautious

1. Hugely Inflated Prices This is the biggest issue. You're paying a massive markup for an item you could have bought yourself for a fraction of the price. That £20 profit the middleman made came directly out of your pocket for zero added value.

2. Deceptively Long Shipping Times The seller might be registered in the UK, but the product is beginning a long journey from a warehouse on the other side of the world. This is why a "UK seller" can have a delivery estimate of 3-6 weeks. They are banking on you not noticing this detail until after you've paid.

3. Customer Service Nightmares What if the item is broken, not as described, or never arrives? The middleman has no direct control. When you complain to them, they have to complain to their supplier. This creates huge delays and communication black holes, making refunds and returns incredibly frustrating.

4. Zero Quality Control Because the seller never handles the product, they have no idea if it's good quality, if the colours are correct, or if it even works properly. They are relying on the same stock photos as you are.

How to Spot and Avoid the Middlemen

You don't have to fall for it. Arm yourself with these simple checks before you part with your cash.

⭐ The Ultimate Tool: Reverse Image Search This is your secret weapon.

On a computer, right-click the product image and select "Search image with Google".
On a phone, press and hold the image and see if a "Search with Google Lens" option appears.

Google will show you everywhere that image appears online. You'll often immediately see the same product on sites like AliExpress or Temu for a tiny fraction of the price.

⭐ Scrutinise Delivery Times This is the easiest giveaway. If the seller's profile says "United Kingdom" but the delivery estimate is more than a week, be highly suspicious. A genuine UK-based seller with stock on hand can usually get a parcel to you within a few days.

⭐ Check the Seller's Other Items Click on the seller's profile and look at what else they're selling. Is it a random, unconnected collection of trendy gadgets, fast fashion, and homeware? This is a classic sign of a dropshipper who is just listing popular items. A genuine specialist will usually sell related products in a specific niche.

⭐ Read Between the Lines of the Description Look out for generic, badly translated, or overly enthusiastic descriptions full of buzzwords but lacking real detail. Vague phrases like "high-quality materials" or "stunning design" without specifics are a red flag.

Online shopping is a fantastic way to find things we love. The goal isn't to stop buying online, but to do it smartly. Before you get swept up in the excitement of a purchase, take just 30 seconds to do a quick reverse image search or check the delivery details.

Some Essential Questions You Should Ask A Supplier Before Signing Up For A Dropshipping Account

If you're looking for a dropship supplier for your business, it's essential to do your research beforehand as there are so many scams and middlemen who pretend to be a legitimate dropshipping company but are merely just a middleman or a scam just to take your money and run.

A dropshipping scam or a middleman can be quite difficult to

distinguish from a legit dropshipping company. Their website will look like a real business, the design, layout, and features can be difficult to distinguish from a true droppshipper, and may even be designed to look even better than the average legit website. This is to fool you into giving away your hard earned cash without you knowing until it's too late.

So before you decide on starting your own dropshipping business, I've

        prepared some essential questions below to ask a supplier before
        committing to a scamster
        or a middleman acting as a legitimate business with the sole intent of
        taking your cash and disappearing. 

In case you're wondering what's is a middleman, it's a company

            acting as a dropshipper and claiming to be the supplier of the
            products displayed on their website, but instead of taking your cash
            and running, most middlemen will actually supply the products you
            pay for but do not hold the products themselves but instead they use
            their own legit suppliers and add a higher margin to the products
            taking a cut of your profit, thus making it difficult for you to earn a profit from the high prices you pay compared to your competition.

              before committing, and in order to separate the legitimate
              dropshipper from scams and middlemen"
          

Are you the Manufacturer of the product/s? If not are you a partner or have a share of the Manufacturer's business? (This is an important question to ask. Although not all dropshipping company actually manufactures the products they sell, but if legit will have some sort of partnership or common interest with them as some manufacturers don't have the time to dropship items in small quantities, so they outsource them to large wholesale companies who purchase in bulk).
Do you stock Inventory of the products you sell? (If not this is guaranteed to be a middleman, who is taking the profit that you should be earning and charging a much higher price to you, which will prevent you from competing on price with your competition and more often than not you'll end up at a loss.
Do you offer true wholesale pricing so I can make a profit? (If so, ask them for a copy of their price list or ask to see some product prices on their website).
Do you Dropship (single) item's to the UK? (I've used the 'UK' in question 1. as an example only. This is your choice depending on what country you live. Also, I've put the word (single) in brackets because not all dropshipping company's will dropship single items, some have a minimum amount (e.g. minimum £100....) you have to spend on your first order. Most dropshippers will dropship single item’s but not all will. Don't automatically assume it's a scam if they have a minimum purchase requirement).
Do you charge a dropshipping fee for each item, and if so what are your fees? (Not all genuine dropshipping company's charge an additional fee for their service, but some do. this is quite normal for them to charge a small fee for their service, as it covers their shipping materials and handling charge. Others don't charge an additional fee but merely include it in the price of the products. Either way, it saves you a lot of time and hassle of having to purchase shipping materials yourself and saves you time, enabling you to concentrate on more important aspects of running your day to day business.
Is there a minimum order? (Some legitimate dropshippers policies include a minimum order, so don't automatically assume its a scam if they do. It's your decision to separate legitimate company's from the scamster, only after asking all these questions and getting a reply, along with your own research of the company in question. Only then should you make a decision. If one or more of your questions cannot be answered appropriately, then ask yourself, why? (All legitimate dropshipping companies should be able to answer these simple questions, and in plain and simple English, without the jargon, and words you don't understand).
Do I have to purchase the website start-up package in order to become a dropshipper and do business with you? (some legitimate dropshipping company's I've come across do have a package website already loaded with their products for you to dropship, but will also give you the option to dropship single items without purchasing the package. Personally, I've found that a lot of them with the website package deals are a scam. not all of them but the majority of them are. if you come across a company with this package your better off to steer clear and avoid using them. If you are sure they are legitimate and want to do business with them and they give you an option of taking out the package or not, then it's safer not to buy into the package, just use the single item dropshipping program they have).
Do you have the appropriate certificates in your possession that are needed for a business in order to be a dropshipping company? If so is it possible to see them or get a copy of them? (A legitimate company should have these in their possession and would be only too willing to share this information with you. If there's a delay in providing this or if they are unable to provide these certificates, the stay well away. It's almost certainly a scam if they refuse to provide this information).

Anybody can sell items on eBay, be it items you have lying around the house that never get used, or an attic or garage with antiques and collectibles, it don't matter as long as you stay within eBay's policies and Guidelines s and of course you must have a PayPal account in your name with verified address linking to that account at least. That's the minimum requirements in order to start selling.

If like most people you already have an ebay account for purchasing items, then you're ready to go!

But like I said you or your partner must have a verified Paypal account, even if you purchase your items via credit card, bank transfer, check or any other means of credit.

eBay insists on this, mainly because not too long ago they actually owned Paypal, but have recently sold it's assets, mostly anyway and have a small share in it. It's not that bad though if you're unfamiliar with Paypal, there are a lot of benefits especially for individuals, like payment protection if you don't receive your item or vice versa.

Exactly the same as a business seller, except without the ever increasing selling fees, from both eBay plus Paypal fees, so do the math first before jumping in as a business seller because you could end up at a loss if not careful.

The holiday season is upon us. Some will actually say that the holiday season already started back in August. Without going into a shouting match on who is right and who is wrong, let's just agree to disagree and say, "It's Time!" It's time to start checking inventory, getting your email lists ready and organized, checking your listings images and even prioritizing your tasks as we inch closer. I will go as far as to say that the latter is the most important. It's important to make sure you are ready for the rush.

How many marketplaces are you on this year? One? Two? Four??? Have you added more or scaled back your efforts from last year? Are you on niche marketplaces or broad ones like Addoway, eBay and Amazon? The answer is: It doesn't matter right now.

We want to sell and we want to sell a lot during the holidays. It is not just about the money. Money is very important, but it's about the fun we have selling this time of the year. Am I wrong? Going back to the years I sold, I always had the most fun during the holidays. Of course they were the busiest and the most hectic, but the clients were so easy to please and were always overjoyed to get something they loved from us. So before you read any further try to remember the holidays and the fun and enjoyment YOU bring to your customers.

1. Don't forget what you sell

It's easy to get closer to the holidays and see products that people are liking that are not part of your collection and get a feeling to buy some in and resell to be a part of the madness. DON'T DO IT! Don't be part of the madness. If you haven't thought about the product(s) already and planned to bring some into your inventory you are only going to give yourself a headache.

2. Don't Add New Suppliers

This only applies if you are a drop shipper, but this is part of Tip 1. You don't want to add mayhem to you and your business life right now. You have planned planned and planned some more. Don't mess it up by adding unknowns right now.

3. Make Sure You Ship Worldwide

I can't tell you how many shoppers buy from sites like ours and eBay that are overseas. I know it's a challenge to deal with a new language and currency, but trust me - you are missing out. If you have the tools to track the locations of your shoppers check to see the percentage of international shoppers. It might just surprise you.

4. Make Sure You Have Plenty of Inventory

You know what sells and doesn't. Just make sure you have enough and not too much. When? Right now. Make sure right now. Don't go to Tip 5 until you go check your inventory. Yes even if it takes two days to go through it. Come back and continue reading after.

5. If You Can Go Niche, Go Niche

I know on Addoway we are not a niche marketplace, but this doesn't mean you can't be a niche store. It is much easier for a shopper visiting your store to browse other items and buy more when you are selling similar items. Sometimes it can hurt your business when you sell clothes, candles, and couches. Nothing matches.

6. Thank. Thank. And Thank Some More

We are confident you already do this with every communication and order you receive, but it is even more important this time of the year. Thank potential shoppers for visiting and asking questions whether it's through your store, email account or on Facebook or Twitter. Even thank another seller for mentioning you online. They have to purchase too! Once the holiday season is over you can then spend time sending thank you cards and reminding them that your store is always open and that you appreciate their business.

8. Don't Forget Old Fashioned Email Marketing

Email marketing will always be a HUGE generator of the most sought after form of marketing - "word of mouth." It is also one of the most important forms of marketing. You have lists of old buyer's right? Well, send out a nice "The Holidays are Upon Us" or "You bought from us before and you might like this" card. Something simple and not too markety (no it's not a word, but I am going to use it :)).

Product Review:

The all in one Epson Stylus Office BX305FW Plus, wireless Printer, Scan & Copy machine is an all around useful product to own, for a number of reasons. I own one myself and its great for use as a personal home printer for your average use plus is capable of use for an office or a small to medium sized business. I use mine for both as a home personal printer, just changing a few settings lets you print out text and images a lesser quality than if you were to use it in business, making it a reasonable price to print documents and manuals for home and personal use which in turn makes the ink last that much longer than another brand of printer. The reason for this is each ink cartridge are individually purchased so when one cartridge is empty, there's no need to dispose of the rest. All you need to do is purchase the colour that is empty, unlike some printers where you can no longer use the other colours as they are combined into one cartridge, making it a lot more expensive and disposing of a lot of wasted ink.

Secondly by changing a couple of settings it is transformed into a more professional device for use in your business or for great photos, presentations or for making a perfect copy of an important document that's needed in your business. It's not as fast as some office printers but the quality is great, the settings are easy to manage, the ink is very inexpensive to buy plus you have the capability to use it wireless capabilities weather at your office or even in a room at home where anyone with network access can print directly from it in any room without the need to change settings or connect to it via printer cable.

It is also capable of printing out 99 copies continually in a very short period of time and only using a small amount of ink at the same time. The scanner gives a perfect image of your scanned document and with a few changes in the scanned document can be changed, edited or remodelled to a perfect image or doc that your happy with without compromising on quality or colour. Perfect for photographers, businesses or just a home personal printer.

This product that I have purchased myself is my third model of this printer. After buying the two previous Epson models, which were quite good compared to some other brands, I knew that soon as the newest model of this Epson came tho the market I had to have it based on my experience from the two lesser quality models of the same product. Also out of the 3 models of this product that I've purchased, Ive not had no problems with them all working correctly as they should. Occasionally I had a paper jam or a bad print out but that was easy to overcome. I purchased the upgraded models for better quality printouts and my previous models was sold on eBay with no problems at all.

All in all I would give this product a 5 star rating for all round excellence, cheap ink, quality printed documents, Clear image prints, ease of use for the novice and professional alike. I have not yet had a good look at the upgraded model of this printer, but you can bet your life on it that will be my next purchase when I am ready to renew my printer.

Buying the best ultra portable laptop

Ultraportables have been pushed to their limits since May 2011 when Intel launched its 'ultrabook' campaign - a new title requiring models to reach a minimum set of criteria around both specification (from the Intel processor to measuring under 21mm thick) and performance (for example, a less than seven second start up time).

Ultraportable laptops are for those who want a laptop that's portable without compromising on performance. They are worlds apart from the now slightly dated netbook, which offers only very basic performance despite being similarly bite-sized.

Something to watch out for - particularly with ultrabooks - is that most are sealed units and you'll struggle to upgrade elements such as built-in batteries or Ram. Pricing tends to be high - models we have on test commonly start at around £800 but you can easily pay more than £1,000. The premium pricing, and lack of ability to upgrade with most models, is even more reason to make sure you get the right laptop for your needs.

What makes a good ultraportable laptop?

•Solid state storage Most ultrabooks have solid state drive (SSD) storage (the most common size is 128GB), or a hybrid of SSD and more traditional hard disk storage. The latter often takes the form of a 16GB solid state cache to boost loading speeds, while keeping the larger storage capacity you get with a normal hard drive. In this case you won't actually be able to save to the SSD. SSDs have no moving parts, so are faster (improving boot speeds), reduce noise and heat and improve battery life, but capacity is limited and they're more expensive than standard hard drives.

Excellent battery life There's not much point in an ultraportable with poor battery life. We'd expect a good laptop to last at least six hours when browsing the internet over a wi-fi connection, but some of the latest models claim to last up to eight or nine hours. This is something we put to the test in our labs to find the real-life story behind the claim.

•Matte screen You'll be looking at a display between 13 and 14-inches for an ultraportable, but something you might want to consider if you find reflections annoying, is a matte screen. Our lab tests have shown there's no discernable difference in quality between a similar matte and shiny screen, so it's just down to personal preference

•Premium materials Premium design helps ultraportables and ultrabooks stand out from the rest of the crowd. It's not all about looks though. Materials like magnesium, aluminum and carbon fibre not only give a quality appearance, they're more robust and lighter.

•Light and thin design Ultrabooks must be less than 21mm for a 14-inch laptop and less than 18mm for a 13-inch version. However, you can still find ultraportable models that don't hit these specifications that are still very easy to slip in a bag. In terms of weight, Apple's 11-inch MacBook Air is one of the lightest you'll find, at a shade over 1kg, but anything around 1.3kg to 1.5kg should be light enough to carry round for the day.

Premium materials Premium design helps ultraportables and ultrabooks stand out from the rest of the crowd. It's not all about looks though. Materials like magnesium, aluminum and carbon fibre not only give a quality appearance, they're more robust and lighter.

Features you don't need

•Excess ports Again, due to size, ports on these laptops tend to be minimal. You'll generally find at least one of everything you need on the better models, including a HDMI output and USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt (a fast connection found mainly on Apple MacBooks) ports. Many ultrabooks don't have ethernet ports and can access the internet over a wi-fi connection only.

•Graphics Ultraportables and ultrabooks won't normally have separate graphics cards from the likes of Nvidia. Most models will use the processors built-in graphics, for example Intel's HD graphics family. This is not a problem as the small display isn't likely to mean you'll be carrying out too many multimedia tasks.

•Optical drive A feature you probably don't need, but if you do you're unlikely to get one it. Most ultrabooks don't have room for a CD drive due to the squeeze on space.

While starting a dropshipping business is a great way to start an ecommerce business, digging deep through the internet to find a reliable supplier can be tough. However, with Oberlo and Aliexpress, there is a convenient marketplace you can use to dropship.

AliExpress makes it easy to find products to sell on your store, without having to worry about inventory or shipping. You can pay for products at wholesale prices and have them drop-shipped directly to your customers.

Why AliExpress for Dropshipping

AliExpress is a gigantic marketplace with a wide selection of products you can sell in your store. Because most of the AliExpress sellers are overseas manufacturers, their prices are very competitive.

While AliExpress may position itself as an online retailer, most sellers on AliExpress understand that a large number of their customers are resellers and are much more interested in dropshipping.

Dropshipping with AliExpress is also very easy.

There’s no upfront cost or fee, so you can test out products without any financial commitment. You can start dropshipping today, for free, by using AliExpress or Oberlo.

Many sellers on AliExpress have great product photos that you can use on your website, as well as detailed product descriptions to help you describe the product in your store.

I’m going to go over in more detail how this all comes together, what to look for in a product and seller, and how to position yourself for success, but it’s really not any more complicated than what I described above. Setting Up Your Store

Now that we understand how AliExpress can work as a dropshipper, and how you will position your store, let’s first get your store set up before placing your first order.

Selecting Your Niche and Products

The first part of setting up your store is deciding on your niche. If you don’t know where to start, start with the product categories AliExpress has and begin deciding what interests you the most or what you’d feel the most comfortable selling.

Once you have a niche in mind, it’s time to start choosing a few products you want to resell on your store. In this example, I chose running shoes as my store niche.

As you’ll find with AliExpress, there’s a huge selection of products to choose from. It can be overwhelming. It can also be lead to headaches if you don’t select a quality product from a reliable supplier.

While it isn’t perfect, I’ve developed a list of criteria for choosing a product. There’s no science to it, but so far it’s helped me select reliable sellers. Here are a few things I look for when selecting a product on AliExpress to dropship:

No brands, fakes, knockoffs: I avoid any brands to avoid reselling fakes and knockoffs. Look for unbranded products. If there’s a logo on the product, I avoid it, even if it may be legitimate. I don’t want to take the risk since I’m not a licensed reseller and also because I don’t actually know if the product is real. This might significantly limit your choices, so choose a niche where brand doesn’t matter, such as with electronic accessories or clothing.

ePacket delivery with free shipping: When possible, I try to only resell products that offer ePacket shipping that’s free. Because a majority of products on AliExpress come from China or Hong Kong, ePacket delivery is not only the most economical, but one of the quickest for small goods to get to the United States.

Over 300 orders: A product with a lot of orders tells me a few things. First, it tells me there’s demand for the product. Second, it tells me the supplier must be reliable as my guess is that a few of those orders are repeats. Sometimes when looking for a new product, I’ll sort products by the most orders.

Over 4.5 stars rating: I also like to ensure the products I plan to resell have a high product rating (over 4.5 stars) and the seller has high positive feedback as well. Just to get a second opinion on sellers on products, I use a Chrome extension called AliExpress Seller Check.

This provides me with a detailed overview rating left with a third-party app. I’ve found this to be much more reliable than simply using AliExpress’ rating system.

Low price with a high margin potential: Depending on the product I want to resell, I like to stick with purchasing products within a $1-$20 price range. This makes it less risky when I lose money on a sale, and these products generally can be priced at $20-$50 or more. For example, I can find running shoes on AliExpress for around $20 and sell them for $50. This provides me with a 60% profit margin.

Lots of great, unbranded, product photos: Do your due diligence to ensure the photos are actually from your manufacturer and not stolen from another retailer online. Doing a quick Google image search will help you see if the product photos are of a real brand and retailer or from the manufacturer themselves.

Communicative, helpful seller: Don’t be afraid to ask a seller questions before placing an order with them. A good reliable seller will answer all of your questions quickly. If a seller doesn’t respond to messages, that’s a big red flag.

Adding Products to Your Store

Once you setup your Shopify store, it’s time to add a product. This step is important to cover in detail because it’s not as simple as copying the images and description of the AliExpress listing and placing that on your website.

Instead, if you want to position your store for success, there are a few things you should consider.

Write your own product descriptions. The product descriptions for many of the products on AliExpress were not written by copywriters or with the intention of fully explaining the benefits of the products. Having your own unique content will serve your business better in the long run (Google ignores duplicate content) and will help you convert better on product pages.

Let customers know about delivery times. It’s a good idea to include on the product page (or elsewhere on your store) that your customers may need to wait at least 20 days (depending on the supplier) for their order to arrive. Since most suppliers on AliExpress are located in China, shipping times can be longer than average.

Use an order tracking app. With longer shipping times than most people are used to, you’ll often receive emails from customers asking where their purchase is. Use an order tracking app from the Shopify App store to keep your customers up-to-date with the status of their purchase.

Offer free shipping. This can become one of your competitive advantages so I highly recommend offering free shipping to your customers by taking advantage of the free/low cost shipping offered by many AliExpress sellers.

Price products appropriately. Consider pricing your products at about twice the cost. Shooting for a 50% margin will make running the business worthwhile, as well as cover for marketing expenses.

Add products to your store with Oberlo. Instead of manually adding products from AliExpress to your website, you can use Oberlo to quickly add products to your store.

How to Use AliExpress to Dropship

Now that you have your store filled with products ready to sell and dropship, what do you do once you get your first order?

Dropshipping with AliExpress works similarly to any regular dropshipper. When you receive an order, purchase the item on AliExpress and enter your customer’s name and shipping address. The AliExpress seller handles the rest.

It might be a good idea to have a spreadsheet handy with a list of all the products on your site, the amount you’re selling them for, the amount they cost on AliExpress and a link to the AliExpress listing. This way, whenever you get an order, it will be easier for you to find the supplier on AliExpress as well as keep track of price changes.

Alternatively, you can use Oberlo which can handle all this for you, including making it easier for you to purchase orders on AliExpress and watch for price changes.

When ordering on AliExpress, it’s a good idea to let the seller know you’re dropshipping. This way, the supplier won’t include any invoices or promotions in the package being sent to your customer.

On checkout, you can leave a message for the seller. I recommend leaving a message such as: “We’re dropshipping. No promotions & invoices, please!”

As I mentioned earlier, try and select ePacket shipping if the supplier is in China and if it’s available as a shipping option. Many suppliers will offer this shipping option for free.

Depending on your seller’s processing time, you’ll receive an email shortly letting you know that your order has been shipped.

Click the link in the email to view the order, which will allow you to see the tracking number for the order.

Head over to your Shopify admin and fulfill that order. Be sure to enter the tracking number, too.

That’s it! Now it’s just a matter of waiting for your customers to receive their order. When the order arrives, AliExpress will send you an email asking for confirmation that the order was received. Give some time for the customer to get back to you in case there are any problems with their order. This way, you can bring up the issue with the supplier through AliExpress for them to correct it.

What About Refunds and Returns?

Many AliExpress suppliers don’t offer returns. This means you’ll have to handle returns and refunds in one of a few ways. When there’s an issue with an order a customer placed on your store, it’s usually because the order never arrives or your customer is not happy with their purchase.

For the first case, an order never arriving should be brought up with the AliExpress supplier. In this situation, contact the supplier to resolve the issue or use AliExpress’ Buyer Protection.

If your customer is simply not happy with the product, I suggest providing a refund. If the product is damaged, ask your customer to take photos and send those photos to the AliExpress seller and go from there.

Growing Your Dropshipping Business

Once you’ve made your first few sales, it’s time to start looking at how you can grow your dropshipping business and make more money.

Eventually you’ll begin to figure out who the reliable and quality suppliers are, and who are not. You should consider building relationships with the reliable ones. This will allow you to get better prices and priority order processing.

I’ve found most of the suppliers on AliExpress use Skype. If you see yourself frequently ordering from the same seller, it’s a good idea to ask them for their Skype username to develop a business relationship. Once you’ve demonstrated you can bring in recurring sales, some sellers will allow you to place your logo on products, include custom invoices or branded inserts into shipping packages.

Start Dropshipping

The best part about AliExpress dropshipping is that it allows you to quickly test and validate store ideas and products. Unsure if you’re capable of selling a certain product? RECOMMENDED EMAIL MARKETING SERVICE PROVIDERS

ActiveCampaign: This all-in-one CRM and email marketing platform comes at a pretty affordable price point. It’s extremely easy to set up and use, while still retaining the ability to perform the more complex functions like automated tagging and email sequences.

Infusionsoft: This is the platform I use to run my online business ecommerce, email marketing, and customer database. It’s infinitely flexible and it has awesome features for segmenting people based on their actions, and it has great automation built in. Getting set up with Infusionsoft can take awhile, but they do have great training videos and support. Read my comparison of Infusionsoft and Ontraport here.

Ontraport: This is the alternative to Infusionsoft, which doesn’t have as many of the bells and whistles in regards to automation, but it does have other perks. One of them is the built-in membership plugin that comes with their packages. Get the full review of Ontraport versus Infusionsoft here.

Aweber: Aweber is the first email marketing service I ever signed up for, and I stayed with them for many years before making the switch to an “all in one” system. It’s dependable and delivers your emails, plus it’s pretty straight forward to set up. I feel like it’s the system that grows with you.

Mailchimp: This is a great service to get started with for free, when your list is less than 2000 subscribers. But it does have some downfalls, like list segmentation, and designing opt-in forms that are easy to use and that match your site’s designs.

KEEP YOUR WEBSITE SECURE AND SPEEDY

WPEngine: If you’re getting a lot of traffic, then I recommend and personally use WP Engine. It’s a great WordPress specific host, where a lot of the technical stuff is managed for you. No need to be a tech wizard, and they have incredible support staff, too!

Headway: This is my WordPress theme of choice, because it’s the most straight forward drag and drop platform I’ve found. There are even some awesome skins to choose from, and I recommend it to all my clients.

Backupbuddy: If you have a WordPress website, and it’s not hosted on a platform like WP Engine, then you need this plugin. You could rely on your host to make sure they have backups on hand in case anything happens, but having your backups on a local computer means you can be back up and running faster if you need it!

Sucuri: If you’re not hosted on WPEngine then I highly recommend you invest in this plugin to ensure that your site is safe and sound. I’ve seen way too many business owners have their sites hacked, get weird pharmaceutical links placed all over, and it’s just not pretty. Take your business website’s safety seriously, because it’s much easier to prevent than it is to resolve after something happens.

SOFTWARE & TOOLS TO KEEP YOUR BUSINESS ORGANIZED

Asana: Oh, if I could write a song about one tool that has made my days more productive and fun to collaborate with my team, it would be all about Asana! You can read my fullAsana review and watch a preview of how it works, but the best thing is for you to try it because it’s totally free.

Confluence: Confluence is a wiki for your company. We use it to house company operations procedures, meeting agendas and notes, planning documents and more. While Asana is for project management, Confluence is for ongoing knowledge management and overall company communications.

Scrivener: I’ve been using this program since it first came out, and it’s one of the few pieces of software that I have open 80% of the time. It’s where I write my video scripts, my sales letters and emails, and my books. It’s great to help you map out sequences of emails, and keep track of a ton of research all in one place. It’s also pretty minimal, with a lot of functionality under the hood.

You Need A Budget: I’m a recent convert to budgeting. You might think that when you’re making a lot of money in your business you won’t need a budget, but the philosophy of knowing where each dollar goes is way more empowering. I use this software on all my devices, and to organize our family budget with my husband. It’s got cool chart features that show you fun metrics, too.

Dropbox: If you collaborate with others online, Dropbox is a great way to share documents. We use this platform to upload all of our videos before they’re ready to go onto YouTube, and we also use it for documents of all types. It integrates beautifully with Asana, and connects to all your devices, too!

Echosign: If you have a lot of documents that need to be signed, this one service could save you a lot of time and paper, too. I’ve found that we can save at least 10 minutes per contract when we use Echosign, and it makes me feel good that we can do business with people quickly without cutting down more trees in the name of the law.

In order to start an online business, you need two things, a product idea and supply. If you already have your product idea the next step is finding the perfect supplier. In our global village, it has never been easier to find a manufacturing or wholesaling partner halfway around the world, however sourcing your products from overseas can still seem like a daunting task for new online entrepreneurs.

In today’s post, we’re going to look at how to effectively and safely source a supplier for your product idea using the popular business directory Alibaba. We'll introduce you to the pros and cons of going overseas and show you how to navigate this new terrain so you can lock onto the perfect supplier for your product idea and get started selling online.

Let’s jump right into it.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of Sourcing Overseas

The most common reason many entrepreneurs look to Asia, and in particular China for product suppliers is to take advantage of the low manufacturing costs. Costs of manufacturing in Asia can be significantly lower than North America and other parts of the world, so much so that for many businesses, it could be quite difficult to be profitable if it wasn't for overseas manufacturing.

Cheaper product costs are great, but they aren't the only reason Asia is an attractive place to find a supplier, there are some additional benefits as well:

Lower manufacturing costs
Suppliers are (generally) much more open to working with smaller businesses and providing smaller quantities
High number of suppliers to choose from
For many products, Asia might be the only place that produces the item
One-stop services like Alibaba have made it very easy to navigate and purchase from suppliers

Along with the advantages of sourcing from overseas suppliers also comes several disadvantages that you should be equally aware of. Some of the biggest disadvantages include:

Perceived lower quality from customers
(Usually) lower manufacturing and labor standards
Almost no intellectual property protection
Language and communication barrier can be difficult to overcome
Difficult/costly to verify manufacturer and visit on-site
Longer shipping time
Cultural differences in business practices
Product importation and customs clearance
Lower level of payment security and recourse

What Is Alibaba?

If you've decided and are determined to source your supplier from overseas, there's a good chance you will be buying from Alibaba. By the numbers, Alibaba is the largest ecommerce company in the world (bigger than Amazon and eBay combined) and it's also the most comprehensive directory that connects suppliers (mostly from Asia) with buyers from all over the world. Alibaba literally has millions of products from hundreds of thousands of suppliers so there's not much you wont find on the directory.

Begin Your Search

Buying on Alibaba and using the directory is fairly straight forward to use and similar to other marketplaces like eBay. Browse the product categories or do a search for the particular product you’re looking for.

There are two common approaches to doing a search on Alibaba. You can either search for items based on product descriptions, for example: dog collars, which will give you thousands of results for dog collar products. Alternatively, from the drop-down menu, you can select “Suppliers” instead of “Products” and instead search for manufacturers that specialize in that particular type of product.

What to Look for on Product Pages

When starting your search for a supplier on Alibaba, there are a few things you want to look at and pay attention to on the product listing page. Let’s take a look at a example listing for a dog collar listing we found on Alibaba.

Unit Price

One of the first things you’ll likely want to look at is the price. For this listing we can see a price of $2-$3 USD FOB. FOB stands for Free On Board and means that the seller will pay also costs associated with getting the product to the marine port (the cheapest way to ship products from Asia) and the buyer pays the cost of actually transporting the goods across the ocean to the final destination.

Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)

Next, you’ll likely want to look at the minimum order quantity. The minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest order the manufacturer is willing to accept. However, it’s important to note that this is almost always negotiable. In our example, the minimum order is 200 units. Multiplying that by the higher-end price of $3 per unit we can quickly see that we would be looking at a minimum order of approximately $600 USD + shipping from this particular supplier, for this particular product. This is good to know for later when it comes to negotiating because it give you a good start point.

Payment Options

After understanding price and MOQ, you will likely want to know how you can pay the supplier. There are several common methods of payment, each have their pros and cons for both the buyer and the seller.

Let's take a look at the most common payment options below and the associated risk level to you as the buyer:

1. Upfront TT (Bank Transfer)
Risk Level For Buyer: Risky
With a bank transfer, the supplier will receive full payment before production starts. This payment method bears a high level of risk to the buyer and generally is not recommended when dealing with an unknown supplier. There is little if any recourse to get your money back if something goes wrong.

2. Letter of Credit
Risk Level For Buyer: Fairly Safe
A Letter of credit is fairly safe for both parties, however a letter of credit carries some complex procedures and is generally only recommended for larger purchases ($20,000 and above).

3. Western Union
Risk Level For Buyer: Very Risky
A risky payment method for the buyer that's not recommended when it comes to paying suppliers if the payment is not protected by escrow. Western Union generally should only be used when dealing with people you know very well. There is no recourse if something goes wrong.

4. PayPal
Risk Level For Buyer: Fairly Safe
Paypal is a popular payment method for buyers as it presents a much lower risk, ease of use and generally pretty good buyer protection. Although it's a popular option with buyers, it's less popular with suppliers due to difficulties in withdrawing money, high tax rates and potential charge backs from less than honest buyers.

5. Escrow
Risk Level For Buyer: Fairly Safe
When using an Escrow service, the buyer's money is held by a 3rd party and is only paid to the supplier after the buyer confirms satisfactory delivery of their order. Escrow is a fairly safe payment method for buying and selling online because Escrow protects both the buyer and supplier.

Generally, when you are just starting, you’ll probably want to look for or negotiate with suppliers to either accept PayPal or some type of Escrow service to give you the highest level of protection.

Buyer Beware

As great as Alibaba is, it’s also plagued with some problems that you need to make yourself aware of when you are researching and contacting various suppliers.

Let's take a look at three of the biggest problems with sourcing suppliers from Alibaba:

Middlemen - As mentioned previously, Alibaba has hundreds of thousands of “manufacturers”. However, many of these “manufacturers” are not manufacturers at all, rather middlemen that masquerade, marking up the price, increasing the level of miscommunication between you and the actual manufacturer while providing little, if any real value.

Scammers - Middlemen are bad but they will only take a bit of your money by charging you higher fees, scammers will take all your money. Although Alibaba has put forth a strong effort to combat and remove scammers from their platform, there are still a good share of dishonest suppliers on Alibaba that you need to be cautious of.

Quality - Quality is another big concern when ordering from overseas. Many products will be advertised as premium or high quality, however it's not uncommon to find that your opinion of premium quality and the overseas supplier's opinion are vastly different.

Safeguarding Yourself

So how exactly do you protect yourself from middlemen, scams and low quality products on Alibaba? Although no single method is perfect, together practicing several safeguards is your best bet.

Let’s take a look at several things you can do to protect your money when sourcing from overseas:

1. Verify suppliers - Alibaba has their own verification program in place which includes several levels of verification. Below is a chart that summarizes the three different levels of verification Alibaba has. These verification badges will appear on product listing and supplier profiles if they have them. Looking for these verifications is a good first step.

In addition to Alibaba's verifications, there are also independent 3rd party services located in Asia that will visit factories on your behalf to verify the supplier and product quality. Depending on the size of your order, a few hundred dollars extra for added piece-of-mind may be well worth it.

2. Ask questions and followup - As you begin narrowing down suppliers make sure to ask a lot of questions about their business and their products. Ask for a copy of their business licensee, ask for a phone number and actually call it. Have a Skype meeting with your contact. Ask for photos of the factory and sample products.

Feel free to ask for whatever makes you feel more comfortable doing business with someone a world away. It wouldn't be crazy for you to even ask your factory contact to take a photo of themselves on the factory floor holding up the current days newspaper and one of their products.

3. Get samples - It should go without saying that before you invest any significant amount of money into inventory you need to get samples to check and verify quality. Feel free to even contact them through another (fictitious) name and email and get an additional sample so you can compare quality.

4. Too good to be true - Finally, if something is too good to be true, it usually is. Be weary of pricing or promises that don’t seem right or that are way off from other suppliers you've contacted. Always be willing to walk away from a deal if something doesn't feel right.

Contacting Suppliers

Now that you understand how to better protect yourself when doing a transaction on the other side of the globe, it's time to contact some suppliers. When contacting suppliers overseas, email will likely be your main method of communication. In many cases, they will likely be using a translation program like Google Translate to translate your email as well as their reply back to you. Remember, computer translation is still an imperfect art so expect some errors and possible misunderstandings. To make sure communication is as clear as possible, keep your emails short, concise, well formatted and spelling error free. This will not only help the manufacturer but it will ultimately provide you with better replies in the end.

Tip: When asking your questions and formatting your emails to suppliers it's best to number your questions so that they can easily reply to each number. This keeps the questions and communication clean and organized.

Requesting a Quote

Requesting a quote (many times referred to as a RFQ, Request For Quote) is a relatively simple process, however, taking a few extra minutes to plan your email can make a significant difference in the number and quality of replies you receive.

Here are a few important questions to consider for your email:

Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ’s) - Even if a listing has their MOQ listed, you should double check with them to make sure it’s accurate. If the MOQ’s are much higher than what you know you can afford, you'll want to ask them if they are willing to negotiate the minimums. Make sure to give them an idea of what you can afford. Keep in mind, minimum order quantity is almost always negotiable with overseas suppliers.
Pricing For Samples - Samples are important to inspect for quality. You’re going to want to ask what their pricing is for samples right away. Some suppliers that receive a lot of sample requests and may change the full retail pricing, others will offer you samples at a discounted rate, and some may even provide you samples for free if they feel you're a serious buyer.
Production Pricing - One of the most important questions is how much your products cost per unit will cost. Many times on Alibaba they will give you a range (Example: $2-$3 per unit), but you’ll want to know exactly how much each unit will cost you.
Production Time - Knowing how long it will take to produce your order is an important consideration and depending your exact business, time can be critical.
Payment Terms - Many suppliers will require new businesses to pay for the full order upfront. This is important to know since inventory is a major cost for ecommerce startups. You may also want to also ask if they provide payment terms on future orders.

Here's an example of an email template you may want to consider as a guideline when contacting overseas suppliers from Alibaba:

Hi,

My name is John and I am with XYZ Company.

I am interested in placing an order for Widget A. Before I do however, I just have several questions:

What is your minimum order quantity?
What is your cost per unit and at what quantity levels do you offer quantity discounts?
What are your payment terms for new customers?

I would also like to order a sample of Widget A before placing a full order. Can you please send me the cost for the sample including shipping to:

As you can see from the sample above, it's short, concise and it's goal is to make sure at a high level that there is a fit between both parties.

Negotiating

Once you have begun conversations with several suppliers and have a good idea of each of their prices, MOQ's and payment terms, you can begin negotiating with them. As mentioned previously, the minimum order quantities are almost always negotiable, it's simply a matter of asking. Remember, a good negotiation leaves both parties happy with the outcome so push a little but not too hard.

Weighing Your Options

Once you've narrowed it down to a select few suppliers, you'll want to weigh all your options. Keep in mind that when weighing your options, you'll want to consider more than just price, MOQ and payment terms. Make sure you factor in how well and how quickly each supplier replied to you. Your communication with your supplier can be a critical element of your business going forward so you'll want to make sure you start off on the right foot.

Liquidation vs. Wholesale: What’s the Difference?

There is often confusion on how liquidation and wholesale differ (or if they do at all). In fact, there is a huge difference between the two. Read on for overview of both.

Liquidation typically means an organization is trying to turn excess, overstock, or obsolete assets into cash, quickly. For retailers, obsolete merchandise costs money because 1) the goods depreciate with age, 2) they take up space in the warehouse, and 3) they tie up capital. Most retailers will end up selling – aka liquidating – 95 percent of this excess inventory on the secondary market to free up capital and warehouse space; it will be sold at a loss.

Historically, large retailers and manufacturers have sold this liquidation inventory in bulk through negotiated transactions with a handful of buyers. These sales are generally at prices well below retail MSRP. Over the past few years however, a shift has taken place: many retailers are bypassing traditional liquidation methods and incorporating technology-based programs for obsolete inventory into their overall business strategy. This includes working with B-Stock to launch customized B2B online auction marketplaces that connect returned and excess merchandise directly to business buyers; the result is a level playing field for all buyers, big and small, to compete for the inventory. Essentially liquidation buyers have access to highly discounted inventory that they were previously never able to buy without middleman involvement. What’s more, the inventory is generally listed at a fraction of MSRP.

Now, wholesale. Wholesale is the sale of goods and merchandise to resellers and businesses. The wholesale price is usually fixed and the amount of product can vary substantially. The goods are usually sold – by the wholesaler – in bulk quantities with the intention of being retailed/sold by the purchaser. Something else to note: true wholesaling is generally not available to the standard consumer.

Wholesalers frequently purchase large liquidation bulk lots from large liquidators, break those lots apart, and then repack and redistribute them in smaller lots to smaller retailers and resellers. Often by the time the smaller retailer or reseller gets it, the merchandise has been through multiple middlemen and price mark ups.
