What is a Disney Fish?

On Disney Ships, next to each stateroom door and under your cabin number is a fish shaped decorative element that serves a practical purpose as a message holder. The first two ships, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, started with seahorse on all staterooms. The Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy replaced the seahorse with a fish, and fish extender sounds better than seahorse extender, hence the name. The Disney Wish (and we assume the new Disney Treasure as well) went a bit crazy and uses owls, snails, Cinderella’s pumpkin coach, a crown and suns. While it may seem like a simple detail, it’s an iconic and functional part of the Disney Cruise experience.

The primary function of the Fish is to serve as a message holder. Disney Cruise Line staff use it to leave important communications and documents for guests. These messages can include daily itineraries, excursion tickets, dining reservations, and other cruise-related information. When there’s a message or document to be delivered to a guest’s stateroom, it’s typically placed in a small envelope or pouch and securely attached to the Fish outside the door.

However, for most of the cruise, the fish just sat there empty, so some smart people came up with fish extenders that hang from the fish (or owl, etc.).

What is a Disney Cruise Fish Extender?

If you’re planning a Disney Cruise Line vacation, you might have come across the term “Fish Extender” or “FE” in discussions about onboard traditions and fun activities. Many are now trying to change the name to Wish Extender due to the fact that not all doors have a fish anymore. But what exactly is a Disney Cruise Fish Extender, and why is it such a beloved part of the Disney Cruise experience?

A Disney Cruise Fish Extender is essentially a gift exchange program that allows passengers to connect and exchange small, thoughtful gifts with fellow cruisers while onboard. The name “Fish Extender” comes from the fish-shaped or seahorse-shaped message holders located outside stateroom doors on Disney Cruise Line ships.

A Fish Extender is typically a fabric hanging with pockets for each member of your family in the stateroom. It hangs next to your cabin door underneath your stateroom number, and is available for all to see. They can have any theme that you like, and typically include your family name at the top and each pocket will have a persons name attached, so each person in the family will have a place to get gifts.

While you can make your own fish extender (there are no requirements on what it looks like or the quality of craftsmanship), many DCL guests op to purchase a fish extender, as you can reuse from on multiple Disney Cruises. A quick look on Etsy and you can find a pirate themed fish extender, a Star Wars themed fish extender or even a Disney Cruise themed fish extender. Just do a quick search, there are a lot of options and all are customizable. I would suggest to not put your cruise date or stateroom number on the extender, so you can reuse it.

Fish Extender Groups

Before your cruise, you can join or be assigned to a Fish Extender group. These groups are often organized through online forums, social media groups, or even by Disney Cruise enthusiasts. Each group typically consists of a manageable number of participants. The easiest way to find a group is to search Facebook for your upcoming Disney Cruise. It is likely a private Facebook group or Facebook Page for your cruise has already formed. Just ask to join, then do a quick search of the group for Fish Extender. For my upcoming cruise in 4 months, there is already an adult only, kids only, and a family fe group set up. You can join one or all of them. Several bigger Disney forums also set up groups. Just do a Google search for your cruise and see what you can find.

Once you’re part of a Fish Extender group, you’ll receive a list of fellow cruisers in your group. This list includes the stateroom numbers of your group members. Please note, most FE groups are limited to smaller groups, so you won’t be stuck in a large group and be expected to give out hundreds of gifts.

Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island

Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island offers a unique and interactive experience for families. Explore secret caves, suspension bridges, and winding paths as you immerse yourself in the adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. While there’s a bit of walking involved, it’s a fun and adventurous experience for curious young minds. Does your toddler need to get out of the stroller and run around, Tom Sawyers Island is perfect for just that!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Height Requirement: 40 inches (102 cm) or taller

If you have an older toddler that wants to try a roller coaster, Big Thunder Mountain might be the perfect fit (it was for my kids). This thrilling roller coaster ride has a height requirement of 40 inches (102 cm). Big Thunder Mountain Railroad features fast-paced twists, turns, and sudden drops, making it potentially frightening for little ones.

New Orleans Square

New Orleans Square, home to two fantastic toddler friendly (but sometimes scary) rides, and some of the best restaurants in Disneyland!

The Haunted Mansion

Disneyland Railroad – New Orleans Square Station

The Disneyland Railroad provides a delightful and leisurely journey around the park, and the New Orleans Square Station is a great place to start. With no height restrictions, it’s suitable for toddlers and babies. Hop aboard the train and enjoy scenic views of various Disneyland lands as you relax and soak in the sights and sounds of the park. Stops include New Orleans Square, Mickey’s Toon Town, Tomorrowland and Main Street USA. The round trip tour takes 18 minutes, and includes a ride through the Grand Canyon and Primeaval World. However, the stationary gondolas provide a calm and enjoyable experience.

Jessie’s Critter Carousel

Jessie’s Critter Carousel is a delightful spinning carousel featuring adorable critters from Woody’s Roundup. Little ones can enjoy a gentle spin while riding on their favorite critter.

Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters

While it offers a bit of excitement, it’s still suitable for toddlers and babies. Young ones can sit comfortably in your lap as they whirl around with Mater’s catchy tunes.

Character Experiences

Many toddlers are afraid of Disney characters. We have a few tips you can use to help your toddler get used to those oversized Disney characters.

1. Consider watching characters from afar for a while before thrusting your child into Maleficent’s arms. Parades are a great options where many characters can be seen riding and walking. You can also stand to the side while characters are meeting other guests and just let your child watch for a while.
2. Start with characters they know from home, they may seem less frightening. List a few favorite characters and ask a cast member where you can find them.
3. Encourage your toddler to greet all of the characters with a high-five, it will break the ice.
4. Take advantage of Character Meet and Greets in the parks. They are a bit more low key.
5. Don’t press your child if they are scared, there will be time for them to meet characters when the grow up a little.

Where to stay?

If at all possible, considering staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort Hotels, the Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Resort & Spa or the newly refurbished Paradise Pier, now Pixar themed! Staying with Disney will give you close access to the parks, allowing you to hop to your hotel room in a matter of minutes for naps or just a break from the day. Disney’s Grand Californian actually includes an entrance right from the hotel into the Disney California Adventure park!

1. Plan Ahead: Familiarize yourself with the potential scary elements of rides (Snow White’s Scary Adventures, Pinocchio’s Daring Journey, Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, etc.) to ensure a seamless experience for your little ones.
2. Use Rider Swap: If you have older children who want to experience attractions that your toddlers can’t, take advantage of the Rider Swap service. This allows one parent to wait with the baby or toddler while the other enjoys the attraction with the older child, and then you can switch places without waiting in line again.
3. Stroller-Friendly: Disneyland is stroller-friendly, so bring a stroller for your little one to rest in between rides. Just be sure to follow Disneylands’s stroller size guidelines.
4. Snack and Rest Areas: There are plenty of places to grab a snack and take a break in Disneyland. Enjoy a leisurely snack or meal while your little ones rest.
5. Stay Hydrated: Remember to stay hydrated, especially in the California sun. Bring water bottles or use the water fountains available throughout the park.
6. Plan for Nap time: If your little one still naps, plan to take a break during nap time. If you think you may need to take a break for a nap, arrive at the parks as early as you can, those first few hours are gold! Taking a break will also allow older kids to enjoy the parks later into the evening.
7. Baby Care Center: Disneyland offers Baby Care Centers with private nursing rooms and changing tables for your convenience, as well as baby supplies like bottles, pacifiers and first aid products. There are also usually a few friendly cast members available to help.
8. Stay Flexible: Lastly, stay flexible with your plans. If your little one needs a break, take it. Disneyland is about creating magical memories, and that includes catering to your child’s needs.
