First some background information as to what the question is about for those who are not familiar, then the answer I received. All this will be preceded by a time-sensitive announcement:

Arel (as she is universally known in the art world) will be having a second opening of her one-woman show at the Rafael Healing Institute at the Jewish Family Services this Wednesday, July 15, 2009, starting at 6:00 pm! How, you may ask, does one have a second opening? Well, the first opening was so packed by 6:15 that many people missed hearing Arel talk about her artwork she is showing and its meaning. (For those who do not know, Arel = Rachel Mishory, my wife...)
Jewish Family Services Building is located in Tamarack Square. From Hampden, turn left (north) on Tamarack Drive, left on Eastman and then left again into the parking area. The JFS building is on the left.
Okay, back to the Three Weeks.

Background: The three weeks between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av (Tisha B'Av) are a time of mourning for the Jewish people. This is a time when the distancing of ourselves from G-d is most visible to us as a people and nation. One of the main ways we give ourselves reminders during the day of this reality is to not listen to music. To fully explain the significance and meaning of the Three Weeks, contact Rabbi Leban at The Jewish Experience (www.theje.com).

The Question: Our Summer Spiritual Workout uses music in the background to help us in our Jewish meditations. Is it acceptable to listen to this music during the Three Weeks?

The Answer: The answer I received from a Halachic authority (posek, or authority in Jewish law) is that as the music is background for the meditations to help us concentrate on the experience, it is permitted.

I thought I would share this aspect of what went into the making of the Workouts with you.

Enjoy and don't forget to either make a comment or to email me (mmishory@theje.com),

Mordechai Mishory

A Tour of the Garden of Eden

Listen to the audio file

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>Listen to the audio file</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>noreply@blogger.com (Dr. Mordechai Mishory)</itunes:author><itunes:summary>Listen to the audio file</itunes:summary>

Welcome to the Workouts!

Welcome to the Summer Spiritual Workout!

I'm Mordechai Mishory and I want you to know that my goal is that you will leave each workout smiling and glad you worked out spiritually today.

You will hear me say in almost every workout to be comfortable with your back supported. As we will be exercising spiritually, having your physical body relaxed with your back supported will make it that much easier.

You will also hear me encourage you to email me with questions or comments, and especially to check in with me and let me know that you are participating. It is exciting to get a note from you!

Now that I see that The Jewish Experience has set up a whole blog site for us, it would be wonderful to make this an active site, so go ahead and write to me here by posting to the blog. I am relatively new to the world of blogs so you can all help make this an interactive discussion.

If you like, you can still email me privately at mmishory@theje.com.

Okay,

Let's all enjoy!

Mordechai Mishory, PhD

Introduction - Going Within

Listen to the audio file

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>Listen to the audio file</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>noreply@blogger.com (Dr. Mordechai Mishory)</itunes:author><itunes:summary>Listen to the audio file</itunes:summary>
