This post is in collaboration with the Herzog Foundation featuring Christian homeschool co-op support opportunities.

When children approached librarian Beverly Cleary, she struggled to find books with relatable characters—so she wrote her own. She saw a need and met it. If you are searching for local Christian homeschool co-ops and your search results come up short, consider starting your own. The homeschool co-op movement is growing, with families seeking community every year, but not all co-ops are equal. You might find that the ones showing up in your search are slightly too far away, full, not within budget, or misaligned with your core beliefs. Starting a homeschool co-op could be your perfect solution, and Christian homeschool co-op support is available.

How Do I Set Up a Christian Homeschool Co-op?

First, consider which admissions philosophy you will use: evangelistic or covenantal.

Second, decide which teaching approach your co-op will have: standard or classical.

Third, look at the grade levels you will offer: elementary, middle school, and/or high school.

Fourth, find a place that offers Christian homeschool co-op support.

Is Free Online Training Available for Homeschool Co-op Leaders?

The Herzog Foundation provides free online training and support for anyone starting a homeschool co-op. HF Homeschool takes aspiring leaders step-by-step as they begin to launch co-ops in their communities.

Dedicated Christian Resources for Homeschool Co-ops

Passionate about Christian education, the founder of the Herzog Foundation, Stanley Herzog, sought to provide local parents, churches, and schools with the tools needed to help them reclaim their children’s education for Christ. His goal was to strengthen educators. Teachers. Parents. He created conferences and events to train Christian educators across the board with the goal to carry on the legacy of Christian education through future leaders. This has led to the Christian homeschool co-op support found within the HF Homeschool courses. Providing homeschooling parents with co-op tips, training, and mentorship, HF Homeschool is decidedly Christian with the ultimate goal of pointing young people to Christ.

What If I Am Unsure About Which Method to Use in My Co-op?

As you progress through the HF Homeschool training video series, the Herzog Foundation introduces you to a variety of Christian education organizations, each with its own ideology and educational approach. The time that each section takes to complete varies. Blocking out a dedicated amount of time over the course of several days or weeks to adequately learn and retain the information provided will help leaders gain the most from these courses. Co-op leaders need not have a college degree in Christian education, but those seeking to understand fundamental principles taught in higher-level institutions will gain similar insight with HF Homeschool training. Within these courses, leaders are introduced to organizations such as:

Anglican School Association

Association with Classical Christian Schools

Charlotte Mason Institute

The Foundation of American Christian Education

Ambleside Schools International

Turning Point Academy

Portals Education

And More

After learning about the philosophies and methodologies behind these various organizations, you will choose which best suits the needs of your family and community.

What Is the Difference Between an Evangelistic or Covenantal Co-op?

When seeking Christian homeschool co-op support from the Herzog Foundation, potential leaders are asked a variety of questions, including:

Why is Christian education important to you?

What is your current occupation, and what time commitment are you willing to give to start your co-op?

What is the specific reason you want to start a Christian homeschool co-op? Why does your community need it?

What type of governance structure will your co-op have? Church subsidiary or independent?

What grade levels will you serve?

Additionally, leaders are asked if they are seeking to provide an evangelistic or covenantal co-op. Understanding the difference will help you with your curriculum selection, format, and marketing. The two main types of Christian homeschool co-ops are:

Evangelistic Co-op: This is for leaders seeking to have a community outreach. While the core leaders, teachers, and instructors may be required to sign a statement of faith, membership is open to anyone, regardless of their faith. The goal is to provide Christian education to the community and anyone is welcome to participate.

Covenantal Co-op: This is for leaders seeking to provide an educational environment for homeschoolers who share similar beliefs. Leaders, teachers, helpers, and members generally sign or agree to a particular statement of faith.

This post is in collaboration with JAM with Latin which makes learning Latin easy.

Do you want your child to learn Latin, even though you never did? Are you concerned about helping your student learn and understand something so foreign to you? (pun intended)

JAM with Latin is an excellent online classical education-style Latin program that helps your students begin learning Latin with all the resources and support they need to succeed.

What is JAM with Latin?

JAM with Latin is an online, asynchronous Latin course designed to support students as they progress through the Henle Latin program. Course A covers the first fifteen lessons of the Henle book. The program takes 60 minutes per day, four days a week, for a period of thirty weeks.

Throughout the week, students will watch short, five- to ten-minute video lessons, do flashcards, complete written exercises, and take quizzes.

What is Included in JAM with Latin?

Video Lessons

Downloadable Workbook

Review Quizlets

Step-by-Step Directions for Flashcards

Lifetime Family Access

In addition to the JAM with Latin program, students will need a copy of the Henle textbook.

How Are Students Learning Latin With JAM with Latin?

Each day (four days a week), students complete assigned tasks. These often include a video, flashcards, and written exercises. Some days also include quizzes or tests. The focus is more on the flashcards than on the exercises, and students work for an hour and then stop, even with incomplete exercises.

The flashcards will help students acquire the knowledge they need to apply Latin vocabulary and grammar more in-depth in later lessons.

There is also a getting-started video to help parents understand how the program works and the requirements for students. For example, when students complete quizzes and tests, their parents will record the grades. If the score is not high enough, it will not be displayed, allowing the parent to know that the student needs additional help with that particular concept.

What if My Child is Struggling with Latin?

If a child needs additional help, JAM with Latin includes several great options. Each Monday, there is an optional Zoom session where students can get help. Students can also schedule private Zoom sessions or email the instructor with questions. This is a huge benefit for parents who are unfamiliar with Latin.

Who Should Use JAM with Latin?

This program is designed primarily for middle-grade students who are just beginning their journey into learning Latin. It could also work for students who were older but new to Latin.

JAM with Latin Class A correlates with the Classical Conversations program; however, JAM with Latin can also be used by students not enrolled in Classical Conversations.

FAQ about JAM with Latin

What sets JAM with Latin apart from other programs?

The included Zoom tutoring provides more support than most other programs.

Is JAM with Latin affordable?

The price is very reasonable for the course, and the extra Zoom tutoring and lifetime family access make it an exceptional value.

Can I use it with all of my children?

Yes, once purchased, you have lifetime access for the whole family.

Overall, JAM with Latin is the ideal solution for any parent seeking to include Latin in their child’s classical education. The program provides the instruction and support needed for student success with minimal parental input.

Learning to play an instrument can teach various life skills. For kids, the obvious one is how to use the instrument you’ve chosen to make music. It has been said that music has many benefits to improve your quality of life. It also can teach some life skills that can translate into other areas. For example, to learn to play a new instrument, you need to be strong in the areas of discipline and persistence. Let’s examine building life skills through music.

Here are seven skills that can be achieved by learning music in your home.

Big Picture Mentality

This is helpful with many areas in life. When setting a goal, it’s helpful to keep that goal front and center. Remind yourself that all the work done is inching closer to achieving that goal. Whether it’s mastering an instrument, playing a particular piece, or writing an exam, realize that the hard steps of learning are the stepping stones for getting closer to achieving the goals. All the little notes on a sheet of music, when put together, produce the most wonderful symphony.

Perseverance

When you have that big picture mentality, this can help you to persevere. Practice makes perfect! This skill will help your child keep going even when things are hard. Part of this process is learning that it’s okay when a particular piece is hard. It will get easier as they keep practicing.

Patience

For children, patience is very hard to come by sometimes! But like the skill of perseverance, patience is needed to keep going towards reaching the goal. Remind your children it’s okay to feel discouraged. But they must learn how to pick themselves up again and keep on going. It’s important to be patient with yourself because we are not perfect. Everyone needs to have patience! It’s also tempting to want to skip steps along the way because it seems tedious. But even the easy parts need to be practiced, not just the hard pieces.

Problem-solving

Like many subjects, there are tough pieces that may be hard to figure out. Rather than letting the problems deter them, teach them how to think of ways they can improve or work around a particular problem. Maybe they need to ask someone for help or do some research. Practicing this will encourage your child’s skills in creativity as they work towards finding different ways to help work on those tough pieces as well.

Time Management

Quality depends on the quantity of time that is put into achieving a goal. Imagine the difference between someone who practiced for half an hour as opposed to someone who practiced for many. The evidence will be shown in their performance (unless you’ve got a musical prodigy!). For most, people need to make the time to practice, and it needs to be enough time to work on those more difficult parts and to practice the piece on a whole, from start to finish. This is where goal-setting meets schedules. Your child will benefit by using the time management skill with music alongside daily chores and schoolwork. They will also learn to realize how much time is needed for tasks as they get used to it and be able to plan accordingly with more ease.

Working Together with Others

If your children join a choir or play in a band with other children, they must learn to work together. This encompasses some of the other skills listed, like patience and perseverance, but it also is a parallel to the big picture mentality. They have to see and hear the end result and work together to make sure everyone gets their part right. Later on, when your children are out in the workforce, they will have to apply this skill when working with a team.

Stress Relief

Music on a whole is a stress reliever for many. Some people like to write in journals, draw or paint pictures, or read books. Some like to sing songs or play an instrument to ease their minds and relax. Music is a great way to give your children a way to calm down when they are having a rough day. Learning what you can use as a healthy way to de-stress can be a great skill to have when problems come again.

The gift of music is so much more than musical notes and instruments. It can be a great teacher of life skills for your children to learn and take with them as they grow.

This post on early math enrichment for homeschoolers is in collaboration with Math Galaxy.

Whether you are a new homeschooling family or a seasoned homeschool veteran, we all are looking for supplements to help our children succeed in their education. Math Galaxy provides a variety of supplements that promote early math enrichment for homeschoolers. We live in an age where there are so many programs available on the web, and now we have the technology of apps that can be downloaded to a handheld device. Math Galaxy iOS apps and workbooks provide math enrichment across grade levels K–12. This availability provides homeschool families with a great amount of flexibility, which has always been a homeschool perk.

Early Math Enrichment for Homeschoolers from Math Galaxy

Teaching early math skills involves not only repetition but the ability to maintain a child’s attention. Math Galaxy has a preschool and kindergarten app for math enrichment available on an iPhone or iPad. With playful games, cute child-friendly graphics, and spoken directions, young children will definitely enjoy practicing math skills more than once a day! Worksheets and textbooks are great tools for teaching, but in many cases in order for a skill to be retained, there needs to be repetition or additional practice. Allowing your child to play a game while practicing math skills is a great way to strengthen his math skills.

Why Choose An App to Help with Math?

Math apps are a great choice to reinforce already known skills while practicing new skills. The apps provided by Math Galaxy in the App Store provide multiple games depending on the grade level. Sometimes in a homeschool setting a child’s skills might span across multiple grades, so you might not be sure which level is best for your child. Math Galaxy has a great way for parents to see an overview of the topics covered in each grade level. They have created a YouTube video for each grade level that shows a short clip of each topic covered. This is also a great way for parents to familiarize themselves with the material and how to use the app/work through the lesson.

But don’t worry, these apps can be used with minimal parental involvement. Each grade level has its own topics to cover, and they are organized with not only wording but graphics of the lesson/game. This makes it simple for children who are not reading or just beginning to read to use the app independently. Within each lesson/game the directions are verbally given, so be sure to have the volume up and on for this feature. The following are Math Galaxy iOS apps available:

Preschool & Kindergarten Math

These apps are a new and flexible way for older kids to practice and refine math skills without feeling the pressure of a math paper or textbook. This makes them the perfect math enrichment for homeschoolers.

Intro to Numbers

Recognizing Numbers

Number Sequence

Counting

Now, you might be wondering, “How can I be sure my child is progressing?” Well, the app has you covered! On the home page of the app is a Scores button. Once you tap that, it will open a screen. This is where you will enter your child’s name. However, it isn’t for every lesson, on the Scores page you will see the ones that the score will be recorded on. It is a good practice to update the scores before closing out of the app so you will get the information recorded. In each lesson, the child is asked a math question. When he or she gets it correct, there is a celebration on the screen and a star is placed at the top of the screen. At five correct answers there is a very big celebration.

Meet their needs when teaching writing, grammar, and spelling using these handy tips from HomeschoolingFinds.com.

Each child is unique in their preferred learning style(s) and the way they learn best: visual, auditory, verbal, physical (or hands-on), logical, social, and solitary. Some children may have more than one way in which they learn best, and one way of learning may be better for one or two subjects while other learning styles might be more suited for other subjects.

When it comes to teaching writing, grammar, and spelling to your children, keep in mind and try these suggestions to personalize language arts learning in your homeschool.

Visual – Learning by Seeing or Observing

There are many ways to visually teach writing, grammar, and spelling to your children. Here are some options.

Use flashcards to show the different sounds, spellings, and meanings of similar sounding words (called homophones) such as son and sun, write and right, two and too, and night and knight.

Place side-by-side incorrectly and correctly spelled words for children to recognize the difference and be able to know which spelling is correct.

Show how the meaning of a sentence changes by changing the placement of a comma.

Do a morning message. This short note in the morning with some grammatical and spelling errors for the student to correct is a fun and routine way to practice visually recognizing errors.

Being able to visually see the differences in spelling, grammar, and writing can help students understand the differences found in spelling and grammar and the meanings or definitions of words.

Auditory – Listening to Learn

Listening to textbooks, tutorials, videos, and other learning materials can help kids remember writing, grammar, and spelling lessons. Auditory learning can be paired with physical learning so that children are moving while listening to a lesson.

Verbal – Reading and Talking Through Learning

Verbal learners enjoy saying back what they have learned. For example, after reading aloud, have your child summarize what they have heard or read. Children who prefer verbal learning might also like auditory learning, beginning with listening to a lesson and then repeating in their own words what they learned.

Physical or Hands-on – Encouraging Movement

For this learning style, try to include some movement time before and after a lesson of writing, grammar, and spelling. One suggestion is for children to first spell a word and then act it out. Another suggestion is to read a short story, play, or poem and then act out what has been read. Or, have your child stand, rather than sit, while going through a language arts lesson.

Even something that seems simple, such as switching up the writing tools, can make a difference for a hands-on learner. Tracing the letters in a salt or sugar tray, using a dry erase board, using magnetic letters, or any other form that requires different movements can stimulate the brain of this type of learner.

Logical – Following Instructions

Children whose learning style is logical prefer to have clear instructions and steps to follow. Analyzing sentences as well as learning grammar, writing, and spelling rules including when they apply or do not apply are all different ways to teach this learning style. Rule cards and/or checklists can work well for this type of learner.

Social – Learning with Others

With the social learning style, children may like to spend time learning with others. Some ideas are to be part of a homeschool co-op or to find a Local Schoolhouse in your area. Students can enjoy learning with other homeschoolers by learning from the questions others ask, the answers given, and listening to others read aloud as well as observing how they approach grammar, writing, and spelling exercises.

Solitary – Learning Independently

Students whose learning style is solitary prefer independent learning time. Make sure to choose a course, textbook, video, or other curriculum that your child likes so that they will be interested in completing the necessary learning work.

Adapt to Grade Levels

Your approach to teaching writing, grammar, and spelling will change and adapt based on the different ages and grade levels of your children. For higher grades, more advanced assignments and work can be given such as book reports, essays, readings, and research.

Remember it is more important to teach your child where they are than where their grade level says they should be.

Your Family’s Learning Style

Knowing your family’s and each child’s learning style and approach can help with planning your homeschool day, week, and year. Things to consider include whether your family’s learning style is a classical approach, Charlotte Mason approach, unschooling, or other approach along with whether you plan to have four or five days of learning each week or if you plan to do one subject a day or spend some time on each subject each day.

Many parents feel overwhelmed trying to figure out which curriculum to buy for their children each new school year.
A Complete Christ-Centered Education

Parents completely customize each child’s education by choosing what works best for each individual child. They often realize that what worked for one child doesn’t work for another and find themselves purchasing an entirely new curriculum. This, of course, increases their out-of-pocket expenses. SchoolhouseTeachers.com solves this problem. Parents simply visit the website and select another option that fits that child’s needs without paying anything extra, since the Lifetime Membership is a one-time purchase. This makes it a great value for the money. No matter which courses parents choose, they can be confident that each one is Christ-centered and helps build a strong faith.

A Guide to Confidently Transitioning from Homeschool to College

Homeschool college preparation can feel overwhelming, but with the right planning and support, you can set your child up for success in this exciting new season. Whether you’re just beginning high school or approaching graduation, this guide will help you plan each step with confidence.

Planning for Success

Start Early and Think Ahead

The homeschool to college transition is smoother when you plan early. Use the high school years to build a solid academic foundation and explore your child’s interests.

Track Courses: Keep detailed records of all high school courses, including textbooks used, assignments, grades, and credits earned.

Create a Transcript: Compile this information into a professional-looking transcript. Many homeschool families create their own, while others purchase templates or services.

Adhere to Homeschool Laws: Research your state or country’s homeschool requirements to ensure you remain compliant throughout high school.

Consider the Diploma: Decide whether you’ll make your own diploma or order one from a reputable homeschool organization.

Research College Requirements: Every college is different. Some require specific standardized tests, others look closely at portfolios or course descriptions. Make a list of your top college choices and note their admissions policies.

Spiritual Support for the Journey

Making the leap from homeschooling to college is a big step for both parents and students. New routines, relationships, and expectations can feel overwhelming—but you don’t have to walk this path alone. Invite God into your plans and trust Him to guide each step.

“Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.” —Proverbs 16:3 KJV

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God.” —Isaiah 41:10 KJV

Consider these practical ways to nurture spiritual growth and build a strong foundation for faith during your homeschool college preparation:

Research Local Churches Before Move-In Day
If your student will be living on campus or away from home, help him identify several local churches to visit. Many churches have college-focused ministries and small groups that make it easier to connect and feel at home.

Explore College Ministries and Campus Fellowships
Encourage your student to get involved in college ministries or local church-sponsored student groups. These communities can provide accountability, friendship, and opportunities to serve.

Stay Connected to Your Home Church
Before your student leaves, ask your pastor and church family to pray over her. Many churches will commit to ongoing prayer support or even send care packages throughout the year. Staying connected to the church back home can be a powerful encouragement.

Establish a Personal Devotional Routine
College life is busy and sometimes spiritually distracting. Encourage your student to set aside time daily for Scripture reading and prayer. Having a personal Bible, journal, and reading plan can help keep faith strong.

Remember God’s Faithfulness
When new challenges arise, remind your student (and yourself) of God’s promises. He is faithful to equip your student for every good work and to provide peace in times of uncertainty.

No matter where this journey leads, your student is never alone. God’s presence, wisdom, and comfort are steadfast.

FAQ: Homeschool to College Transition

Q: Will colleges accept my child’s homeschool transcript?
A: Yes. The vast majority of colleges accept homeschool transcripts and diplomas as long as they are well-documented and meet admissions criteria.

Q: Do homeschoolers need a GED?
A: No, homeschooled students are not required to take a GED because it implies they were not able to complete the high school requirements needed to earn a diploma. A GED is taken by students who drop out of high school and do not complete the required classes. A high school diploma and completed transcript are sufficient to apply to any college, and even the US military accepts homeschool diplomas!

Q: What about standardized tests?
A: Many colleges require SAT, ACT, or other tests. Be sure to schedule these early in your student’s junior or senior year. Good test scores help validate your student’s high school transcript.

Q: Where can I find help?
A: There are many online resources including our website, HomeschoolingsFinds.com, the Homeschool College Directory from The Old Schoolhouse®, and the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA).
