Wounds and Blessings is a brand new studio double album by Blaine L. Reininger, the Colorado-born composer and founder member of avant-garde music group Tuxedomoon.

Wounds and Blessings is a collection of 28 new tracks organised into 4 distinct suites. While all the music is performed and produced by Reininger, featured guests include his Tuxedomoon colleagues Steven Brown and Luc van Lieshout, as well as former Indoor Life member Bob Hoffnar and Reininger’s Greek guitarist, Tilemachos Moussas.

On this expansive double set Reininger employs all the tools in his current arsenal, from AI-assisted lyrics to sampler bricolage, to violin and guitar virtuosity, a vast array of computer plug-ins and effects, and a trompe l’oeil assortment of 20^th century avant-garde compositional methods.

"When I’m working," explains Blaine, “and a piece begins to reveal itself to me, I always follow where it leads. It becomes clear that it requires a violin, or a guitar, or lyrics. Whether it should be harsh or serene, orchestral, or entirely electronic. So it is with this new collection. Also, in the vocal songs, the subject of mortality has surfaced time and time again, albeit in a lucid manner and without becoming morbid, or fearful. I’m pleased with the results, and grateful to have the means to write every day and present my music to you.’

The album is produced by Reininger, with mixing and mastering by long-time collaborator Coti K. Cover portrait and booklet photography by George Geranios.

“The […] plan was to record the one-off show that Tuxedomoon performed on June 18th, 1989, in Umbertide, Italy, an event promoted by label Materiali Sonori and actually Tuxedomoon’s last concert until 1997. However, for mysterious reasons, the recording that was made proved unreleasable.”*

… until now, that is. This edition is likely to be the most unexpected of all so far released under the Tuxedomoon Archives imprint: it is a live document of the single concert performed by an extremely short-lived line-up.

The band re-gathered after the successful 1988 tour, Bruce Geduldig and Paul Zahl having meanwhile joined the Weathermen on a U.S tour. This became an opportunity to bring back Luc van Lieshout and Ivan Georgiev into the fold, and once again renew the arrangements and repertoire. Contrary to the preceding tour, the set was to incorporate both recent compositions and Blaine solo numbers. James Nice (1992) commented: “The chemistry was successful enough to provoke serious consideration of a long-term reunion that would move beyond re-hashing former glories with new technology”.

BLAINE L. REININGER Songs From The Rain Palace CD album | gg350 Blaine L. Reininger needs no special introduction. He is an American post-punk, new-wave and alternative pop singer, songwriter, musician, multi-instrumentalist (particularly violin), writer and performer. He is known for being a member of the group Tuxedomoon since 1977 after co-founding it with Steven Brown and, latterly, for a notable music and theatre career, both as a soloist and contributor to other artists' recordings, including The Durutti Column, Snakefinger, Anna Domino, Savage Republic or Paul Haig. After learning the violin and guitar during childhood and studying music theory in San Francisco, Reininger formed the band Tuxedomoon with composer, singer, musician and college-mate Steven Brown and appeared on early albums such as Half Mute, Desire and Suite En Sous-Sol before departing early in 1983 to pursue a solo career. He permanently rejoined Tuxedomoon in 1988 and has subsequently appeared on more recent recordings such as Vapour Trails, issued in 2007 by independent label Crammed Discs. Songs From The Rain Palace was released in 1990 by Les Disques Du Crepuscule in Belgium on CD and cassette. It features amongst other guests Tuxedomoon's Peter Principle. “The St Petersburg gig, on November 27th, 2000, rested on the initiative of a long time fan, installation artist and designer Oleg Kuptsov, along with Gleb Palamodov and Sergey Vasiljev. All three had been dreaming for many years to see Tuxedomoon playing in their home town. Oleg Kuptsov: “This gig was my first experience of the kind as I’m not a concert promoter. When friends from the Materiali Sonori label told me that the band was going to make a tour of some European cities in November 2000, I sent an email to Steven Brown to propose a date in St Petersburg. He was quite enthusiast about the idea.

When the band finally showed up on November 26th at St Petersburg’s airport, after months of preparation, I almost couldn’t believe it. To my view their show at the State Music Theater was truly amazing, powerful and extremely well received by the audience. It sounded like fresh contemporary music although these were pieces that they composed more than 20 years ago.””

Around 1978 Tuxedomoon shared a rehearsal space at Valencia Street, not far from the Deaf Club. The place would see the birth of many classics in their early form, but would also produce a wealth of jams and compositions that would never see the light of day…

… until now, that is. Thanks to the diligence of Peter Principle, some of these loose rehearsals were recorded on tape, duly digitised around 2015.

Blaine: “I would put this in the basement at 16th and Valencia. Our shared space with Noh Mercy and home of our manager Adrian Craig and Esmerelda Kay of Noh Mercy and angels of light. [Only the Strong Survive] only ever got played at Mark Shause’s Halloween party. The head of surgery at USF hospital who later performed surgery on me on the floor of our apartment to remove a calcified growth from my arm. I still bear the scar. [...This version of Crash includes] the line that [Michael Belfer] played forwards. In the sessions it wasn’t working so we turned the tape over and I played forward keyboards with the backwards track. Then we added the drums. This gave us the backwards guitar on the Half Mute version”

The band agrees it’s a magical piece of sound, evocative and nostalgic, fresh and hardly ever boring. You can hear the excitement of exploring “strange new toys”, as well as the mutual acquaintance between the musicians’ individual ideas and styles, gradually becoming something larger than the sum of its parts…

... in other words, gradually becoming Tuxedomoon.

Live in Angoulême, 1983 by Tuxedomoon

A historical recording duly preserved by Peter Principle, showcasing the short 1983 tour that momentarily brought together the then-departing Blaine L. Reininger and recent recruit Luc van Lieshout, albeit never sharing the stage. The recording itself is a fine one, despite the two obvious setbacks that betray its provenance (a 90-minute cassette tape): Saint John required an edit due to being caught in the tape-flip exercise, and Again needed a fade-out in order to avoid an abrupt ending. One could argue this fade-out works well as a metaphor for the band’s transition into a new chapter...

The somber mood is somehow palpable, the classics taking on an elegiac tone, and the new compositions still evolving (in his own personal notes on this recording, Peter himself wrote “Early version of Manner has Bruce still looking for a part”). Towards the end of the gig, right before “What Use”, Blaine announces his departure, which would indeed occur two days later after one final performance in La Rochelle.

“In April 1983, Reininger was contractually obliged to rejoin Tuxedomoon for a few gigs in France. Interview footage shot at La Rochelle made it clear that the show to be performed that night was perceived by many to be Tuxedomoon’s last waltz. But that wasn’t the case and this in spite of the Les Disques Du Crépuscule press releases that... more

Tuxedomoon Live At Amsterdam's Melkweg, 1981 Now Available

"A set of glimpses into Tuxedomoon's early days in Europe, these extracts from a gig at Amsterdam's Melkweg in early 1981 are shrouded in a scarcity of information or associated materials. And yet, with a setlist including tracks from Desire and Suite en Sous-Sol, and never before shared in any form, the recording perfectly captures the journey the band was undertaking at the time, from post-punk to more hybrid territories. Tuxedomoon had just settled at Rotterdam’s Utopia commune a few weeks earlier: this edition thus signals the nascent signs of their European sensibilities, soon to blossom fully in projects such as Divine and The Ghost Sonata.

The recording is provided 'as-is' - the files were housed in a folder inside Peter's hard drive, fades included; you can actually hear the cassette recorder being paused on occasion. This means that, in a way, this edition is not so much a faithful record of the gig as much as it is a collection of snapshots. Anselmo's attentive mastering and a quasi-narrative sequencing will hopefully ensure a coherent whole for the listener."

"Nothing really remarkable to report, outside from the performance. Melkweg at this point was still deeply hippie, functioning as the original "coffee house" pot store. Terrible dessicated brown rice catering with equally dry vegetables. Later they got more globalized and hipster in decor. I remember sitting outside waiting to load the van, thinking what it would be like to jump into the dirty beer bottle filled canal water surrounding the venue."

CINEMA SUNDAY ORCHESTRA. New directions in music for silent films.

Pioneers in audio explorations with more than 20 years of work in resignifying classic films from the last century through live sound, Cinema Sunday Orchestra under the direction of renowned musician/composer Steven Brown has performed in Film Festivals and special events through-out Mexico.

On two different occasions, Cinema Domingo Orchestra has been commissioned by the Goethe Institute of Mexico to compose and perform original music for german silent films. In 2012 for the national premiere of the recently restored ALGOL The Tragedy of Power (1920) by Hans Werckmeister, and in 2016 for the newly restored DESTINY by Fritz Lang (1921).

Former director of the Institute Reinhard Maiworm has stated; “If anyone in Mexico is perfect for putting music to silent film, that would be Cinema Domingo Orchestra.”

Over 15 years Cinema Sunday Orchestra has positioned itself to be the most innovative and unique producer of audio accompaniment to silent (and sound) films, providing cinefiles and the public in general with a unique experience that inevitably leads to new interpretations and new ways of appreciating the seventh art.

This project began in Bruxelles Belgium at the end of the 80s when Steven Brown (founder of musical groups Tuxedomoon, Nine Rain and Kafka Ensamble) began to intervene in public forums projecting 16mm silent films. At the beginning of the new millennium Brown moves to Oaxaca Mexico where he renews the project, now with local musicians with whom together will compose and perform new musical accompaniments to silent films.

The Cinema Sunday Orchestra is: Steven Brown, clarinet, saxophone, piano and keyboards; Bruno Varela, Bass Guitar and curator; Julio García, Guitar, Jarana and Oud; Oxama, Percussion and electronics.
