I really appreciate this. Roc Mitchell was my dad. I worked for him all through high school and half of college helping with typesetting and production art work. He put so much into his font designs and was very proud of that aspect of his art career. He also did many logo designs, some very fun cartoon work, was a very good calligrapher and a very capable portrait artist. I have a beautiful portrait of my Mom that he did. I also have an amazing drawing that he did during WW2 from his viewpoint in the bomber flying a mission over France. I appreciate that he is getting some recognition. Also, my married name is Martin, but no relation to Phil Martin.

I'm a retired "Commercial Artist", a lost title, but favour Graphic Designer or even better Typographer of the Black & white logotype. My greatest objection is to the dumbing down of type, and the disgusting naming of our sacred trade as "Alphabets", a new generation who seem to have lost the essence of instant readability and rapid perception, by trying to reinvent the wheel by trendy pastiche and corruption of what went before. Perhaps we should reconstruct the ideals of The Cooper Union NY 1978. Being style, taste, and more importantly long term message recall by type style and uniqueness. I dread the degradation of "Desktop Publishing" ignoring visual perception principles crafted since Gutenberg. Illustrator and Photoshop are great for execution, but it all starts with the pencil. Typography is art. How often is the graphic impact and branding/message lost due to the designer trying to be trendy and just way too smart. Remember that expression "the medium is the message". Typography used be so subtle, the type told the story first.

I still like the concept of the ILLA, but the feedback from others made it clear that defining terms of use around the language of text is complicated, and produces too many uncertainties. Licensing needs to be clear and unambiguous, not least because I don’t want to spend a lot of time answering queries about specific use cases.

We’re still committed to supporting indigenous language use and revival, though, and, instead of ILLA, we are getting ready to launch pay-what-you-want licensing for indigenous language products. At the moment, these are limited to our Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and Cherokee fonts. Defining a useful indigenous language Latin subset is something we’re working on.

In February 2020, Tiro Typeworks, announced a draft license to provide free access of their fonts to indigenous peoples of the Americas.

In his post on behalf of Tiro Typeworks (co-founded by Ross Mills), John Hudson linked a GitHub page. I quote from it:

Tiro Typeworks' draft Indigenous Language font user license agreement.

This is a new kind of license agreement that will be used for some of our fonts to make them available at no cost and no restrictions on numbers of installations, web views, etc. so long as they are used for indigenous language content.

The goal of this license is to encourage language preservation and education, and to support quality typography in indigenous language publishing." (new paragraphs added)

I have a copy of the 2004 edition on its way to me in the mail. I'm curious whether there is any reason that I might want to try and grab a copy of the newest edition (for far less than the $700 I see it sold for in many places)? I'm also curious if anyone's heard whether there will indeed be a 5th edition of the book? Ebooks seem to have matured quite a lot since 2013, and I even see that an edition of Elements is available in ebook now (though I'd really prefer a print copy myself)

Hi Sue,

Is this image helpful in clarifying how to do stacked charts? https://assets.vectrotype.com/share/Chartwell-HowToStackedBars.png

If not, can you point to exactly what you're trying to achieve, and also which style of Chartwell you're using? Bars, Bars Vertical, or Floating Bars Vertical? Also which directions are you referring to?

You can also email me at travis@vectrotype.com

Like Lesley from 2018, I'm also trying to create stacked bar charts and it doesn't work as shown in the directions (having a line of #s of one color operated by + and then the next line immediately below in a different color. It just creates a whole new graph — not helpful.

What's the trick? I've watched a bunch of videos, searched for instructions, and no one seems to be answering this? HELP!

Cardea (its core design at least) actually seems to predate Freight Micro.
This is the most beautiful book I own printed in the current century.

I value some chapters more than others. I appreciate Argetsinger’s historical context for his style constraints. The chapter on the modifications he commonly has to make to achieve his work’s look is alone worth the price. I love the specimen section, ordered chronologically, stopping at Walbaum and not trifling with sans-serif type or modernism or anything after.

The section on Greek types was pure gold for me personally, having started from zero knowledge in that department. The ornament chapter was also invaluable and features some exclusive Granjon ornament revivals by none other than Matthew Carter.

As I read it, I noticed the page numbering fell back sometime in the first quarter of the book, basically giving us bonus pages, but I can only imagine the noise Mr. Argetsinger made when he caught it just after the final press run. I really felt bad for him, because that’s the kind of dumb error I’ve made more than once and caught after it was too late. I also caught one or two typos, misspellings and font mis-identifications, but it did not stop me from buying two copies of this book (one for me and one for a gift) nor will it stop me from buying more. I read it cover to cover.

I hope this book sells out its first press run and gets a new corrected and expanded edition à-là Bringhurst’s Elements, next to which it sits on my shelf.

It is wonderful to see this energy and drive at the TDC. Nadine and Ksenya should be applauded for a genuine effort to make the competition more accessible and the judging process more transparent. It is also good to see a mention of the nearly twenty years of work volunteered by Maxim for the TDC, through which several important typefaces by designers from outside the NW were awarded.

It would be interesting to read more about how the renewed TDC competition positions itself with respect to past efforts by ATypI (Bukva:raz, 2001 and Letter 2, 2011) and the ongoing Granshan (2010 onwards).

In the meantime,
