The Nintendo Switch 2 was the second best-selling console, with an estimated 802,620 units sold, to bring lifetime sales to 24.17 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 came in third place with 169,892 units sold, to bring its lifetime sales to 155.63 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place, with an estimated 128,236 units sold, to bring lifetime sales to 35.45 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the same month for the Switch 1 in 2018 are down by nearly 133,000 units, as the Switch 1 sold 935,567 units in September 2018.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2019 are up by nearly 38,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 249,000 units. The PS4 sold 1,073,805 units for the month of September 2019 and Xbox One sales were at 377,731 units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 230,793 (-22.3%). PlayStation 5 sales are down by 373,072 (-25.1%), Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 51,401 units (-28.6%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 169,937 units (-50.0%).

Arkane Studios is a studio that Xbox plans to divest as there are currently "several forms of takeover" under consideration, according to French publication Le Monde that spoke with a union representative from Printemps Ecologique.

The report claims Arkane Studios faces a November 13 deadline in the consultation process as the developer is currently facing the possibility of a closure with 217 jobs at risk.

France's Florange Law requires companies with over 1,000 employees that want to close an establishment to look for a buyer for three months. This started in the middle of the summer. 

Microsoft told the publication it was "actively seeking a partner to support the next phase of development and enable the commercialization of the [Marvel's Blade] project."

Arkane Studios is best known for its work on Dishonored and Deathloop. the studios next project, Marvel's Blade, "is nearing the end" according to a union representative that spoke with Le Monde that also said it "would be a monumental waste" if it went unreleased.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 280,880 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 8.51 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in third place with 79,370 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 22.07 million units. The Nintendo Switch was the fourth best-selling console with an estimated 50,568 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 59.39 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the same month for the Switch 1 in 2018 are down by over 29,000 units as the Switch 1 sold 310,163 units in the Americas in September 2018.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2019 are up by over 45,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 140,000 units. PS4 sold 286,066 units for the month of September 2019 and Xbox One sales were at 219,852 units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 66,227 units (-19.1%). PlayStation 5 sales are up by 66,547 (25.1%), Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 28,823 units (-26.6%) and Switch 1 sales are down by 36,798 units (-42.1%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by nearly 74,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by nearly 114,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 9,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are up by over 7,000 units.

2026 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 3.07 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold 2.23 million units, the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.80 million units, and the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.47 million units.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

The Nintendo Switch 2 came in second place, followed by the Xbox Series X|S in third place. 

The total hardware unit sales fell three percent compared to a year ago. The PlayStation 5 in terms of unit sales increased 22 percent year-on-year, while the Switch 2 fell 14 percent and the Xbox Series X|S dropped 27 percent.

The Xbox ecosystem fell to its worst September in history. The previous record was set last year. 

Hardware dollar spending for the PlayStation 5 increased 43 percent year-on-year, while the Xbox Series X|S is down two percent and the Nintendo Switch fell 12 percent. Sony's dollar share of the hardware market reached its highest point in a single month since May 2025, which is the month before the Switch 2 launched. 

Overall spending on video games in September decreased one percent year-on-year from $4.80 billion to $4.76 billion. Spending on video game content was down two percent from $4.27 billion to $4.18 billion, while video game hardware sales increased 12 percent from $324 million to $362 million. Spending on accessories increased 10 percent from $199 million to $218 million.

In terms of 2026 total sales, overall spending on video games is down three percent year-on-year from $42.23 billion to $41.04 billion. Spending on video game content is down two percent from $37.22 billion to $36.34 billion, while video game hardware sales dropped nine percent from $3.18 billion to $2.91 billion. Spending on accessories is down two percent from $1.84 billion to $1.79 billion.

"US video game projected total spending across content, hardware and accessories fell 1% in September when compared to a year ago, to $4.8 billion," said Senior Director and Video Game Industry Advisor at Circana Piscatella. "Year-to-date spending is now 3% behind 2025’s pace, at $41.0 billion." 

He added, "The PS5 Limited Edition DualSense Wireless Controller Wolverine Battle Yellow gamepad was September’s best-selling accessory in both units and dollars."

There were eight new releases in the top 10 best-sellers list with Marvel's Wolverine debuting in first place for the month of September. It is the 11th best-selling game of 2026 year to date.

"Marvel's Wolverine generated the highest launch month full game dollar sales for a Sony published title since the February 2024 debut of Helldivers II," said Piscatella.

He added, "NBA 2K27 surpassed Resident Evil: Requiem to become the best-selling game of 2026 year-to-date. NBA 2K27 ranked 2nd overall in September behind only Marvel's Wolverine."

EA Sports FC 27 debuted in third place, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave debuted in fourth place, The Blood of Dawnwalker debuted in fifth place, and Wardogs debuted in sixth place.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword debuted in seventh place, Halloween: The Game debuted in eighth place, and Ace Combat 8: Ace of Theve debuted in ninth place.

EA Chief Operating Officer David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber said Battlefield 6 was "a great success, and we learned a lot from the launch and the live service." The two also revealed "we’ll be bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project."

EA Chief Operating Officer David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber in a letter sent to staff Wednesday obtained by Bloomberg said that "over the past several months, we’ve taken a hard look at our business" and will be ending production on some projects, including the next Mass Effect game.

EA will continue to invest in sports games, the Battlefield franchise, Apex Legends, the  next Star Wars Jedi title and a new game Iron Man game. Respawn and DICE will collaborate on a new project.

"Across our portfolio, we’re making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth," wrote the executives.

The letter also states EA is cancelling a game in The Sims franchise codenamed Project Lotus and instead will focus on a different project, codenamed Project Evergreen. Development on Skate will continue, but the studio will be downsized.

Electronic Arts was acquired in August for $55 billion by venture capitalists led by Saudi Arabia's investment fund. The company went private and about $18 billion in debt was put in its books. EA earlier this year said it plans to cut spending by up to $700 million as a way to save money.

The claim is Xbox will first release a next-generation handheld by holiday 2027 and the next-generation console by the 2028 holiday season. This is according to people familiar with Xbox's strategy.

A Game About Digging A Hole Together is heading to XBOX Series X|S, XBOX on PC, and Game Pass on December 4, 2026. 

Chronoscript: The Endless End

Take on your friends and the fastest frogs in the world on the online speedrunning leaderboard. CROAK will be available March 2027 for XBOX Series X|S, XBOX on PC, day one with Game Pass, and supports XBOX Play Anywhere. 

CRITICAL REFLEX Montage 

Three unconventional, yet critically acclaimed indie hits from CRITICAL REFLEX are coming to XBOX, with two titles heading to Game Pass and one available today for purchase.  

Arctic Eggs: Make an omelette out of beer bottles, bullets and cigarettes in this dystopian, physics-and-patience-driven frying sim set in a surreal Antarctic city. Oh, and there are eggs too. Available on XBOX Series X|S today. 

Mouthwashing: Take responsibility for the dying crew of a shipwrecked space freighter in this psychological horror drama. Coming to XBOX Series X|S, XBOX On PC, XBOX One, and XBOX Game Pass on October 29, 2026. 

No, I’m Not a Human: Interrogate door-knocking strangers to spot deadly shape-shifting impostors in an apocalyptic anxiety thriller. Coming to XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, and XBOX Game Pass in 2027.

Love is a Roguelite 

Love is a Roguelite (or LIAR for short) unveiled its world premiere trailer, delivering a unique hybrid where turn-based tactics meet deckbuilders and dating sims, set within a procedurally generated love story. Powered by the proprietary LoveSync system where your choices matter, you’ll manage relationships alongside tactical card combat, utilizing multiple character classes and exploring 16 distinct romantic pairings across diverse gender and species variations.  

You’ll need to complete multiple successful runs to reveal the complete story when Love is a Roguelite launches in Fall 2027 for XBOX Series X|S and XBOX PC.

Magenta Down

From the creators of Unto The End, Magenta Down is an atmospheric sci-fi adventure set on a harsh, remote exoplanet. Endure injury and radiation exposure with scarce supplies as you search for a way to save yourself and your crew. Mr. Magpie’s Harmless Card Game 

 Clock in for a sinister roguelike deckbuilder where you’ll build your deck, push your luck, and combine powerful “synergies” to tip the odds in your favour. Every choice is an opportunity to demonstrate your value. With Matt Mercer providing the voice of Mr. Magpie, your deeply unsettling host, you can look forward to a workplace experience where nothing is quite as it seems. It’s just a harmless card game.

Red Kiss 

In Red Kiss, you’ll dispatch mysterious vampire spies and uncover the dangerous thrills of Cold War Berlin. The house’s alluring leader, Daddy, gave you a taste of his team, alongside a first look at the recently resurrected Fritz. You’ll be able to fulfill your darkest impulses as you tap into their powers, gain your agents’ trust, and manipulate your way through this (blood)thirsty tactical narrative RPG. Red Kiss is coming soon to XBOX Series X|S, will arrive day one on Game Pass, and supports XBOX Play Anywhere. 

Rustown 

Five years after the “idiot virus” pandemic, many survivors live with lasting cognitive difficulties. Pushed out of society, they have gathered in Rustown. Jian comes to the city after receiving a letter from her father, who disappeared three years ago and whom she thought was dead. In this story-driven stealth adventure, players explore Rustown, avoid danger without fighting, and uncover clues while getting to know its residents. Jian’s search reveals conflict and prejudice, but also people who care for one another. Developed by Plotrick, Rustown is coming to XBOX Series X|S and XBOX on PC on June 30, 2027, with XBOX Play Anywhere support. 

Scramble Knights Online

Shrek 2 Remastered
