GTFS Changes

As of January 28, 2022, WMATA is proud to announce some major enhancements to the station data with the launch of platforms, levels, pathways, and more precise stop locations in GTFS feed. These features will deliver more accurate travel times for trips, easier wayfinding, and real-time accessible trip planning.

- Developers can use this new information for a variety of improvements , such as:

- Improving wayfinding for trip plans by showing names and locations of station entrances, as well as platform information

- Displaying more details on maps, like separate entrance locations (and their accessibility) and platforms

- Providing more accurate station guides for users

- Delivering more accurate travel times for trips by incorporating pathways information and varying the time for accessible trips

Due to these enhancements, Stops Times and Trips in the GTFS feed will refer to new stops (platforms). Consequently, GTFS Static and GTFS RT will use these new stop ids. An example of the new GTFS feed can be found here.

GTFS-RT Rail Trip Updates: Minor upgrade coming May 19

Disabling TLS 1.0 and 1.1 as of May 19

As of May 19, 2021, we will be disabling TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and 3DES encryption for https://api.wmata.com, leaving only TLS 1.2 for HTTPS encryption. We recommend confirming that your application is able to access WMATA APIs using TLS 1.2 before then.

Limited Real-Time Bus Data

We are working to resolve multiple data-level, system-level and service-level COVID-related challenges at this time. COVID service plans are constantly changing as local governments update their pandemic response levels. Unfortunately, as a result of these challenges, a limited amount of real-time bus positions are available in the WMATA API and GTFS-RT at this time.

We anticipate that these issues will be resolved in the next few weeks. For additional operating information, we are asking customers to reference the WMATA website for the COVID operating status information at https://www.wmata.com/service/status/details/covid-operating-status.cfm#metrobus.

GTFS Combined Feed Extension

Extended by one week! Next week - March 9, 2020 - Metro will no longer provide a combined Bus and Rail static feed to developers. Please sign in to the Metro developer portal for the rail & bus static GTFS feeds. This helps keep the most accurate instances of the GTFS and GTFS-RT feeds available to developers. For any questions regarding either the static or RT feeds, please contact gtfs-support@wmata.com.

GTFS Changes/GTFS-RT Released

Metro has officially launched GTFS-RT! Developers now have access to the new Metrorail and Metrobus feeds through the Developer Portal. With the implementation of GTFS-RT, there will be some changes made to the static GTFS feeds originally hosted on wmata.com. First, the static feeds will be split into two modes - rail and bus. Second, the combined feed will be retired on February 28, 2020. For any questions regarding either the static or RT feeds, please contact gtfs-support@wmata.com.
