This episode we are talking about the 2019 Noah Baumbach film "Marriage Story" starring Matoko Kusanagi and Kylo Ren! In all seriousness, we both really liked this movie and we hope you enjoy our chat about how it goes in on the American legal system, what we thought of all the performances, how the film is disarmingly funny at times (often because of its subject matter rather than in spite of it), stimulates reflections on relationships and fatherhood, and just generally creates awareness and empathy in us.

Burning (2018)

We are discussing one of the best films, Korean or otherwise, made in recent years, Lee Chang-dong's "Burning." In fact, this is Doc's favorite movie! "Burning" is an adaptation of Haruki Murakami's short story, "Barn Burning" (itself an adaptation of sorts of William Faulkner's short story of the same name) and features incredible performances from Yoo Ah-in, Jeon Jong-seo, and Stephen Yeun.

There is a lot of ground to try to cover in this discussion. We tackle the movie's focus on class and wealth divides, what it says about creative individuals and the creative process, reality vs unreality of certain elements of the film and what those possible conclusions mean for the film as a whole as well as its individual elements, and so so much more. It's our decade-in-review podcast! We wanted to accomplish a couple of different things with this one: (a) reflect broadly on the decade as a whole rather than just doing another top ten list and (b) feature a variety of perspectives from all sorts of folks in order to better accomplish (a). We feel we've succeeded!

Hello everyone! It’s round two of our Christmas Ghibli’s with The Tale of Princess Kaguya, a much more recent entry into their filmography with a number of substantial differences in it’s production and time of release, but nonetheless leaving quite a mark on myself and Doc.

Myself and Doc are hardly experts on, well, anything, so we find a certain trepidation in covering Ghibli works given the abundance of critical literature on them, and Kaguya is no exception as one of their most recent works. Nonetheless, we march on and talk at length about the film’s production and background before tackling the film’s themes and ideas on identity, roles, the defiance of simply living and much more!

Welcome to the first episode of the first ever Christmas Ghiblis! We’re so excited to share our love and admiration for this studio, these creators and these films with all of you. We subconsciously associate the holiday season with these movies in our minds, so this felt like the right time to do these episodes. Creating something like the Christmas Ghiblis felt a bit intimidating, as we are far from experts. However, in addition to our cursory research, we also bring to the table our own unique emotional experiences with the films, and we believe these are valuable in their own right, as well as entertaining.

Doc and Shadon deep dive into the first film produced under the Studio Ghibli name, Laputa: Castle In The Sky. We talk about creators Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, and Joe Hisaishi, and what these guys have to say about the film. We also discuss what we think the film’s core themes to be such as: humanity’s sense of discovery, a turn to the post-modern, the moral ambiguity of technology, believing in order to understand, hiddenness, and more! Fujiko Mine, Mine Fujiko. Teacher, resistance fighter, consort, betrothed, spy, thief. Is she all of these things? Or none of them? Just who is the Woman Named Fujiko Mine? A slippery question, but Warui Deshou never turns down a challenge.

Helmed creatively by Sayo Yamamoto (whom you might know from a popular recent anime about some ice skaters or something), Lupin III: The Woman Named Fujiko Mine was created to celebrate the franchise’s 40th anniversary while also taking it in a direction it was not particularly known for: more noir and supremely sexy and confident in itself, not to mention it did not focus on Lupin himself, but rather a character who had been ill defined previously.

With special guest Alexander Smit, join Warui Deshou as we discuss topics raised within the show such as sexuality and gender identity, and also the anime itself. Oh, and we also go off topic into things such as bat nipples and cold ones in the shower. As you do.
