Not only did Hayley and Andrew have the stunning backdrop you can see in the photos below (and that seem to be everywhere you look in Gippsland) but since the wedding was on private property they could please themselves in terms of the schedule, meaning we could take a stroll in the long grass as the sun set.  That’s not easy to do when hosting at a wedding venue as they often have strict schedules they like adhere to, and they don’t usually like the photography getting in the way of that!

With photos out of the way and the sun setting, Hayley and Andrew rejoined their guests for dancing under the stars.

A relaxed approach and the couple’s nearest and dearest (rather than 400 of their parent’s friends..!) are the key things I hope for in a day when I’m photographing weddings so I was delighted when Lucy & Ally booked us in for their ceremony and photos near the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Carlton Gardens.

In order to spend more time with their guests following the marriage ceremony, they opted to photograph their couple portraits prior to the ceremony, so while their ceremony site was being put together we took a wander around the gardens for approximately an hour.

This gave us time to use several different locations and take our time so that we arrived at the ceremony looking perfect, although the photographer may have been a little disheveled by this time…

Following their ceremony and all the legal stuff, the newlyweds led their guests on a short walk through the gardens to their reception at Recoleta, Bourke Street.

Their timing was perfect too, as Melbourne was just opening up again after Covid lockdown so Southbank and the Yarra riverside had a real buzz about it.

Dee & Tim hosted a short and sweet ceremony on their executive room terrace on the 26th floor of The Langham, overlooking the Yarra and Melbourne CBD, and were legally married by a celebrant from a group of marriage celebrants who specialise in elopements, Elope Around Melbourne.

The newly married couple capped off the afternoon by taking a stroll up the Yarra and into Kings Domain for photos before looping back via the NGV and back to The Langham, where I left them to enjoy the rest of their weekend together.

Rose & Malte were married at the Melbourne Marriage Registry on Spring Street on a day when Melbourne was shrouded in the dense smoke from the bushfires.  Not the most enjoyable day to be outdoors, but the newly weds and I were keen for some wedding photos in the nearby Fitzroy Gardens so we dashed to several of the most popular locations.

Being a weekday wedding we were the only wedding party in the gardens so didn’t have to wait for our turn at the locations which made the photos quicker and meant we could all move indoors for some relief from the smoke.

With Malte being a key voice in the climate change debate, he was keen to make reference to the bushfire smoke so the couple donned their P2 masks for a couple of the photos in the gardens.

With the air thankfully clearer in Melbourne, we’re now starting to think about our winter break and where we can go to show our support for communities that have sadly been affected by the fires.

Sure, I’d love a a few weeks in Bali or Port Douglas, but this year we’ll be visiting a few places in Gippsland that we haven’t been to before, to play our part in helping some small local businesses get back on their feet by spending money in the area. We encourage you to do the same!

With a hire fee that was much lower than that of usual wedding venues in the Yarra Valley area, the venue was also available for a few days, so that friends and family could help decorate and camp over on the night of the wedding, which was a great idea.

In order to spend the most time with their guests, Emily and Hugh requested that we photograph most of their portraits prior to the ceremony. They also factored in a little time after the ceremony for a few too, which gave us a several different locations on the site to use, and meant that they got to join the party almost immediately.

With handmade bunting, homemade chocolate, outdoor games and a generally creative and inclusive vibe, the wedding was very warm and welcoming environment.

Throw some amazing food and The Wandering Woodsman caravan bar into the mix and you got the perfect wedding! Surrounded by forest and with clear skies, the night was also perfect for stargazing.

Before you ask, I honestly don’t remember why there was a kids horses head and holding a sword in one of the photos.  It probably seemed appropriate at the time!

Held at the end of Autumn, they were blessed with a beautifully calm and sunny day.  The day was topped off with some gorgeous light before sunset, which we made the most of as we strolled the grounds prior to joining their guests for dinner and dancing in the ballroom.

The request from the couple for the style of wedding photography was for it to be relaxed, casual and not necessarily all about them gurning at the camera. Hence, you’ll see a few photos of their shadows, reflections and their backs!

Nestled on the lake on the outskirts of Daylesford, a visit to the Lake House always feels like the best way to spend a day.

Beautiful views? Check. Great service? Check. Amazing food? Check. Suitable for elopements and intimate weddings? Check.

Sounds like the perfect ingredients for a wedding venue to me!

With heavy rain forecast for the majority of Preeti & Paul’s wedding day at The Lake House, the BOM didn’t disappoint with their predictions, with the outdoor ceremony relocated indoors with just an hour to spare.

We all had our fingers crossed that the rain would stop just in time for the ceremony but it wasn’t to be.  Naturally, as soon as the ceremony was complete, the clouds parted and the rest of the day was beautiful spring sunshine!

With the beautiful late afternoon sun drying puddles, guests enjoyed canapes and drinks on the terrace while we joined the couple for photos around the lake before the couple enjoyed a long and jovial dinner with friends and family overlooking the lake.

Originally from Victoria, Bec now lives in California, where she met her husband-to-be Rob.

While they love their life in California, returning to Australia for the wedding was important to them, and if you’re going to travel all that way you really should make the wedding venue selection impressive! And that they did!

TarraWarra Estate is perched on a hill overlooking Yarra Glen area and the hills beyond.  I never tire of the stunning views in this region.

Known as a producer of exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the first 10 acres of vines were planted in 1983 and are still going strong on the 400 hectares of Yarra Valley farmland.

Located next door to the TarraWarra Museum of Art, the two buildings transition into each other very naturally, with the cellar door hidden away as if part of the hillside.

Bec & Rob readied themselves at a nearby property in Healesville before heading to the venue for a late afternoon ceremony on the lawn in front of the cellar door and restaurant.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed drinks and canapes on the deck while the newly married couple and their photographer wandered around the grounds for photos before rejoining the guests for dinner in the restaurant.

With dinner enjoyed and speeches laughed and cried at, Bec & Rob led their guests to the cellar door for dancing and more fine wine. I like the use of the 2 different spaces over the course of the evening – it kept the guests interested and got everyone up on their feet and dancing.

Following an amusing but heartfelt ceremony with family and a truckload of friends at the beautiful Gardens House in Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens, we strolled the Botanic gardens’ shady areas for photos (with the hope of keeping everyone cool!) before taking the couple and their bridal party to Richmond’s finest back streets and sketchy alleyways for more photos on route to the wedding reception, alongside the Yarra at Fenix.

When a bridal party are enthusiastic and energetic, it doesn’t really matter where you end up for photos as their high spirits and humour will usually keep the mood buoyant and the smiles natural!

Mostly, when I work with couples who are visiting from interstate in order to get married, they are usually from warmer climes further north such as Brisbane, Townsville or the NT, and since their cities or towns don’t always have what makes Melbourne so interesting and special they are always keen to get amongst it and explore.

We usually do the traditional legal stuff first, just like the locals, and then all bets are off as we take a wander through Melbourne’s laneways, alleys, gardens and wherever else takes our fancy.

I love it when couples are happy to let it all unfold and see what happens as it always throws up some fun photography locations and opportunities.

Kerrianne & Tim recently eloped (well, along with 20 family members!) to Melbourne from north Queensland and were keen to take a wander around Melbourne to see a few of the recommended spots that I had told them about, as well as find a few new sites along the way.  We strolled through Fitzroy Gardens for some lush green wedding photography backgrounds before heading back to the CBD streets to find some graffiti and explore the laneways and alleys.

I rarely go to Hosier Lane & ACDC Lane for wedding photos now as it feels a little overdone of late and is often overcrowded at weekends, so it was a nice surprise to see some really great new artworks.

Tim was really excited to find the Malcolm Young mural on ACDC Lane which we incorporated into a few of their wedding photos. The bins are a nice touch, eh?!

Being open to almost anything, Kerrianne & Tim indulged a request of mine to use a stairway on a side of a building just off Flinders Lane that I’ve passed on numerous occasions, but have always been pushed for time or the weather has been bad so I haven’t had the chance to make use of it.

Their ceremony was held in the iconic Upper Gallery, with it’s long pews and full height stained glass windows, and conducted by the very funny celebrant Paul Bonadio.

Following the entertaining ceremony (it helped that the groom, Sam, is also a stand up comedian!) the couple, bridal party and their guests assembled in the courtyard for a group photo, before we ventured off for photos with the bridal party around the grounds of Montsalvat.

I love the variety of wedding photography locations on offer, including the bluestone chapel, Long Gallery and Ornamental Pool, scenic wooded area with fir trees, archways and of course, the instantly recognisable attic room with it’s large skylights.  Anyway, here are a few of the photos from our wanderings around Montsalvat for you to enjoy.

Bre & Daniel’s wedding ceremony was held on the beach at Elwood, just in front of their reception venue Sails on the Bay (now renamed as Elwood Bathers) on a perfect sunny Sunday afternoon.

Following the relaxed ceremony with friend and family we made use of the beach and floral arch for family photos before scooting off to the nearby Kamesburgh Gardens with the bridal party for photos.

The sun had just dropped below the horizon by the time we returned to Elwood beach but we managed to squeeze in a quick shot in the fading light.

Bre was pregnant with her first child at the time so I was a bit wary of her clambering over rocks in the dark for a photo, but she assured me it was all good in her bare feet.  Not much phases Bre – parenthood is going to be a breeze!

I was excited to photograph Renee & Cam’s wedding at the Sandringham Yacht Club and had several spots in mind for photos around the venue as well as the stunning sandstone cliffs slightly further away near Black Rock and Red Bluff.

The wedding day was wet. Very wet. Growing up in the UK, I saw plenty of rain, but this was Australian RAIN, and bloody loads of it!   Sometimes, even Plan B is useless…

This was one of those rare Melbourne days where the rain was relentless.  The planned outdoor ceremony was moved inside and when the time came for photos it was still raining.

Fortunately, in the last 10 minutes of light the rain eased and we scooted outside to grab what we could of the available light.

I kept an eye on the weather during the reception and between courses we ventured into the boatyard for a few minutes to grab a few more shots amongst the yachts.

The photos weren’t part of my initial plan, but you can only plan so much for a wedding day, which is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing them – you never quite know how things will pan out!    That, and meeting lovely couples like Renee & Cam, who are game enough to venture into dark boat yards with me at night!
