She began her engagements at “Salvador Allende” Scuola dell’infanzia, a public infant-toddler center and nursery school for children aged 0–6. The Princess was engulfed by small children wanting hugs as she arrived at the pre-school, and again introduced herself as “Caterina”. 

….she was welcomed to the outdoor assembly area, taking a seat on a tree stump and saying: “Ciao a tutti!” (”Hello everybody”) as the children introduced themselves to her one by one.

One girl said in English “My name is Rebecca.”

“Well done,” the Princess told her, saying, with a flourish, “Caterina”, when it came to her turn.

When she was told another child was also called Caterina, she said: “We’re the same.”

Stopping at a spot where two girls were painting the garden, she remarked: “It’s so nice for them to be able to stop and take time. Do they enjoy painting and art and drawing?” She was told the children did it every day. “And they can be far more expressive when they do things outside,” added the Princess. “Nature itself is creative and free-flowing. It’s a teacher to us in so many ways.”

Crouching down to speak to another two girls who were drawing grasses and flowers, she asked: “Posso vedere? Wow. Bellissima!” ( “Can I see? Very beautiful!”).

She spent some time looking at the grasses through a magnifying glass and, encouraging the children to do the same, moved on after telling them: “Grazie mille, ciao!”

The youngsters led the Princess to the pond, where Stefano Sturloni, atelierista for gardens and nature at the city’s Preschools and Infant-toddler Centres Institution, showed them a tank containing newts. 

Kate gamely joined the children in handling one, telling Stefano: “In most urban areas, even in central London, we have newts like this. It’s extraordinary, if you look and spend time, you realise how close it is to you.” 

“David Attenborough says you have to be able to experience nature in order to protect it – it’s so true.” 

She seemed to be in her element and enjoying the experience. 

A Kensington Palace Instagram post noted, “…listening as children share what they want to explore, build, and discover together as part of the Reggio Emilia Approach. Spending time in the garden spaces where learning unfolds through movement, play, curiosity, and connection with the natural world. 🌱 Working alongside parents and grandparents caring for the school allotment together, where nature is ‘the third teacher’, and children learn through shared time outdoors, hands in the soil, and quiet moments of connection across generations.”

I think there were lots of hugs exchanged today.

A Kensington Palace news release explains that REMIDA is a “cultural project dedicated to sustainability, creativity and the re‑use of industrial surplus. Supported by around 200 companies, the centre recovers materials destined for disposal and reimagines them as tools for investigation and learning for children.”

Kate visited Remida, a creative recycling center that partners with local businesses to repurpose discarded materials into hands-on learning tools for preschools and classrooms.  The visit highlighted a key part of the Reggio Emilia philosophy: encouraging creativity, curiosity and environmental awareness from an early age.

The Hello story notes that “During the visit, Kate admired the fabric swatches that the children at the centre can use to create collages and she said that it was “fantastic to see” the materials being reused which would “otherwise go to landfill”.”

Greeting staff and business leaders who had donated materials to the centre, Kate said: “There’s a popular character called Bob the Builder and he has a philosophy of ‘Reduce, reuse, recycle’. And you embrace that here.

“It’s something as a mother — and, I feel, as a family — we do a lot is try to have [that] at the back of our minds.”

The Princess’s final engagement was at Agriturismo Al Vigneto, a vineyard and restaurant.

In its story, Reuters describes it as “a hillside community in northern Italy’s so-called food ‌valley, an area globally known for products such as the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.”

The princess joined the team at Al Vigneto in preparing tortelli, a typical pasta dish from the Emilia-Romagna region, to serve for lunch.

The future queen kneaded flour, oil, salt and water in a large bowl with her hands, and said: “When I do this at home it’s without a big bowl and it goes everywhere.” She added: “It’s a good work-out.” She rolled her pasta through the machine, and laughed when the handle fell off by accident. “Is there a technique for this?” she asked.

Chef Ivan Lampredi praised the princess’ skills as she took on the role of being a ‘Rezdora’ – the local name for a matriarch or housewife who specialises in masterfully rolling fresh pasta by hand.

Then Kate piped a filling of fresh ricotta, spinach and parmesan cheese onto her pasta sheet and used a special tool to crimp the edges. Signor Lampredi, who has been a chef for 30 years, told her: “You are hired.”

He later said: “I have shown many people how to do this exactly right and she was very good at it. She is a natural Rezdora. She learnt it very quickly. She was a very easy person to speak to, someone just like us. It has been a huge honour for me to host the princess in my kitchen. I can’t believe it. It’s been a big responsibility.”

On her final engagement, the princess spoke to Federico Amadei, a farm-stay owner who showed her different samples of their Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, which is cured for 30, 50 and 100 months.

“It is wonderful to host the princess,” Amadei said. “It was also a surprise. We were asked ten days ago and since then have been getting everything ready.”

A news release notes the Princess was joined by “…many of the individuals she has met throughout her visit to Italy, representing the different organizations and voices she has encountered. The gathering will offer an opportunity to thank them personally for their support and hospitality, and to acknowledge the role they play in sustaining a culture of care.”

After making the food, the princess sat down to a lunch of charcuterie, fried tart, Parma ham and cheese with some of the families she had met during her short visit.

Looking out across the valley, the princess said: “It’s so beautiful here. Thank you for having me. It’s a wonderful view.”

 Now, for our look at what Kate wore today. 

Many readers will have recognized her jacket by Blazé Milano, the Wind Hunter Charmer Pinstriped Blazer in Beige/Neutral.

The blazer is a double-breasted design featuring peak lapels, a center-back vent, oversized buttons of woven leather strips, and the brand’s signature half-moon-shaped Smiley pockets. It was first worn at a July 2023 airshow. The Princess wore it in a photograph by Matt Porteous, released when she provided a health update in June 2024, and then we saw it again in July 2025 for a hospital and garden visit. 

The Princess was in a skirt that looked like a design by American brand Jenni Kayne, the label’s Pleated High-Waist Midi Skirt ($395). The style is made in 100% polyester with an elastic waist and a small black strip at the top of the waistband.

In these photos, you can just see that black portion peeking out above the belt. In addition to Jenni Kayne, the skirt is available at Bloomingdale’s, at Shopbop, and at Selfridges.

​The Princess repeated a pair of slingback sandals by British shoe and accessory brand Camilla Elphick. The designer’s ‘Alicia’ Slingback Flats in taupe & black feature a low heel with a small notch and cross-stitch detail on the upper, and an oversized pearl buckle (a signature for the brand) on the strap. They were first noted at a July 2022 polo match. 

For those who may not remember the shoes, here is a closer look at the details.

The Princess wore a second Blazé Milano piece, the brand’s Viva Nal suede belt ($460). The suede design features an arched tortoiseshell buckle that is reminiscent of the brand’s upside-down ‘smiley’ pockets. Thank you to Magazine 233 via Middleton Maven on Instagram for this ID.  

The Princess brought back some Kiki McDonough pieces we’ve not seen for several years, the jeweler’s Candy Green Amethyst Diamond Earrings (£3200, about $4300 at today’s exchange rates) and the Candy Green Amethyst Diamond Pendant (£2500, roughly $3400) that were first seen publicly during a visit to Belfast in February 2019. 

In addition to her Cartier Ballon Bleu wristwatch, the Princess wore a design by Atelier Molayem, a boutique brand based in Milan. The ABC Bracelet in Liberty Multicolor Fabric (£10, about $13.50) carried the initials of her children, set with Liberty of London fabric. It is described as celebrating “…passion, craftsmanship, and the tradition of Made in Italy through the meeting of two visionary women-led realities.”

On its Instagram page, the brand wrote, “Atelier Molayem is deeply honoured that HRH Catherine, Princess of Wales, chose to wear our 9kt yellow gold cube initials bracelet from the ‘ABC’ collection….the jewel celebrates the people we hold closest to our hearts, those we wish to carry with us always.” Thank you to Emily Ferguson of The Express for the bracelet information.

The Princess traveled to Reggio Emilia, in Northern Italy, a city renowned for its approach to early childhood development. Her first stop was Piazza Camillo Prampolini, where the community’s Town Hall is located. The Princess was greeted by large crowds of well-wishers eager to see her.

This gives you an idea of where Reggio Emilia is located. In its story, Reuters notes that the “Reggio Emilia approach … places relationships, the environment, and community at the heart of a child’s development.” 

The Reuters piece also reports, “In her meetings with ​administrators, teachers, parents and children, Kate will focus on the historical roots of the city’s schools, the role played by women, the connection between ‌nature and ⁠learning, and the involvement of the local community, officials said.” The New York Times provides additional background in this piece. 

Reggio Emilia’s educational approach took root after World War II, when local women used the proceeds from the sale of a tank, six horses and some trucks to build a preschool. A network of municipal infant-toddler centers and preschools followed, inspired by Loris Malaguzzi, an education expert intent on making them places of experimentation and innovation.

A delegation from Catherine’s foundation quietly visited the city about six weeks ago, taking one of the many courses offered each year by Reggio Children, the organization that promotes the educational approach.

In the town square, anticipation has been building for hours, with crowds gathering ahead of Catherine’s arrival, waving “Ciao Kate” signs and giving the Princess of Wales a warm Italian welcome. Italy is said to hold fond memories for her, dating back to her gap year after leaving Marlborough College in 2000, when a teenage Kate spent time studying at the British Institute in Florence.

The Princess wasted no time greeting people in the crowd.

The Princess, who stepped out of her car to screams, whoops and shouts of “bellissima” and “kate!”, launched herself into a walkabout, where people had been waiting up to five hours to see her. She was heard to tell the Mayor of Reggio Emilia that the warm welcome had left her “emotional, seeing everyone”. “Aww, thank you,” she told him, putting her hand on her heart and looking around.

Pausing to speak to children from local pre-schools, she crouched down to get to their eye level to chat. “Parlo un po’ d’italiano,” she said, gesturing that she speaks only a little Italian before asking their names. “Come ti chiami? Io sono Catarina.”

Alice, aged five, said afterwards: “She asked my name in Italian. She spoke Italian very well.” Roberta Marzi, a teacher, said of the children, who were aged three to five: “She asked them some simple questions but her Italian was perfect she spoke clearly.”

She then spent time indoors with the mayor, town officials, and the three women instrumental in the Reggio Emilia movement.

She then spent half an hour sitting down with local “nonnas” – Carla Nironi, Iona Bartoli, and Eletta Bertani – who told her of their work to spread the Reggio Emilia method through the community. All three women were born around the start of the Second World War, and are considered instrumental in creating the programme that the Princess is here to see.

A teacher from the city was especially happy to meet Kate, as the reason for her visit is the unique Reggio Emilia Approach to education. “I shook her hand and thanked her for coming here and said it was a huge honor for us. She said it was a huge honor for her to see the city.”

“When she started her early childhood project, I always thought that sooner or later she would come here because it’s been a staple in our community since the Second World War,” the teacher said. “I can see why she came to Reggio Emilia because her vision is so similar to ours.”

The Princess’s next engagement was at the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre, the primary hub for the promotion and teaching of the Reggio Emilia Approach, named after its founder Loris Malaguzzi.

The facility, which opened in 2006, functions as a hub for international researchers, teachers and families interested in children’s learning and creativity. 

The institution bears the name of Loris Malaguzzi, an Italian psychologist and educator who established the Reggio Emilia network of infant-toddler centres and preschools in the aftermath of the Second World War.

While walking through the centre’s “light atelier”, a room filled with hanging plastic waves and ornaments on the walls, the centre’s president, Maddalena Tedeschi, explained how it encourages children to interact and play.

“It’s encouraging children these days to slow down because their world is so fast-paced now,” said the Princess. “It’s getting them to notice things, in their sensory environment as well.”

Shown a table covered with multi-coloured plastic objects for children to play with, she said she had put on similar activities for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at home.

“I did this in lockdown with the children,” she said. “We tried to find as many objects in the house as we could with as many colours in the rainbow as possible.”

She spent time with educators interested in the Centre’s work.

Before concluding her trip, Catherine spent time with a group of Latin American educators who had journeyed to the Centre as part of a study programme.

The delegates, hailing from Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, were at the facility to gain insights into the Reggio Emilia methodology. They plan to apply what they have learned to educational settings in their respective countries upon returning home.

Catherine added her own: “Dream,” said Annalisa Rabotti, an education expert who works for the city. “She was very curious and interested and empathetic,” she added.

As the classroom session neared its end, the future queen was overheard saying: “If only more educational settings had this approach.”

During her visit, the 44-year-old spoke about the struggles of children growing up in a “fast-paced” world.

Elsewhere, Catherine brought up her late dog, Lupo, noting he had a “big personality”. Children were writing different animals down on paper, and Lupo happens to mean “wolf” in Italian.

Lupo, the beloved English Cocker Spaniel belonging to Catherine and Prince William, died in November 2020 at the age of nine.

After the classroom sessions, the Princess, students, and administrators ventured outside.

Now, for our look at what the Princess wore for today’s engagements.

We begin with Edeline Lee’s ‘Lola’ Blazer ($2020), featuring a slim cut with notched lapels, a gathered or ruched back waist, flap front pockets, a single chest pocket, and contrasting white fabric-covered buttons.

The coordinating Averill Trouser ($970) offers a fitted waistband, side pockets, a welted back pocket, and a pintuck pleat down the center of the leg. Wearing a cornflower blue suit by Edeline Lee, with a Holland Cooper wrap blouse and an Asprey bag, she had made every effort to celebrate and amplify British fashion talent.

It’s an outfit that speaks volumes about how she sees her role as a senior working member of the Royal family. While this trip will focus on her work on early childhood development, the Princess understands that she also has a role in promoting British businesses. Every engagement, no matter its purpose, serves as an opportunity to further that message.

Beneath the jacket, the Princess wore a Holland Cooper Bodysuit ($295), easily identifiable by the goldtone buttons peeking out from beneath the cuffs on her blazer. 

The Princess carried an Asprey handbag we’ve not seen previously. It is the brand’s 167 Micro-Mini Handbag ($3900). Here I show the bag as currently offered in ‘icing blue’ pebble-grain leather. The bag measures roughly 5 “x 7″x 3” deep, with the brand’s signature gold-tone hardware, a top handle, and a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap. Thank you to Gabi for her speedy ID of the bag.

In the jewelry department, the Princess paired her Asprey Woodland Charms with her Monica Vinader Nura Pearl Necklace ($200).

The party was already in full swing when Prince William and Princess Kate arrived, with guests enjoying mini sandwiches and tiny cakes for an hour or so beforehand. The royals stepped through the huge doors of the palace, and, signaling the formal start of the celebration, stood at attention for the playing of the national anthem.

Garden parties, which have been held at Buckingham Palace since the 1860s, provide a perfect way for the monarch to recognize public service. Around 30,000 people attend the events across different dates annually, celebrating all areas of public life and British society.

Their Royal Highnesses met guests from a number of both their patronages, military affiliations and passion projects including William’s Homewards campaign to end homelessness and tenants across Duchy of Cornwall sites.

The Prince of Wales admitted he had ‘bags under the eyes’ as he hosted a Buckingham Palace garden party the day after watching his beloved Aston Villa [footbeall team] reach the Europa League final. 

The Princess, meanwhile, told guests that her husband ‘makes so much noise’ when he watches his team on television as she revealed that she let her three children stay up to watch the game against Nottingham Forest on Thursday evening. 

‘They all make so much noise, even Louis,’ she laughed. ‘They wanted to go to the match but we let them stay up and watch it.

The Daily Mirror has more information on one of those invited to the party. 

The Waleses were reunited with Southport dance teacher Leanne Lucas; who shielded children during the July 2024 knife attack and who they met last February during a visit to the town. Ms Lucas was critically injured in the attack in which three children, Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King and Elsie Dot Stancombe lost their lives.

Prince William told her: “It takes a lot of courage to push forwards. You were so brave, you have got so much support.”

Ms Lucas told the Princess: “I was in such a dark place last time we met.”

She said afterwards of their conversation: “It was like meeting old friends again. We had such personal conversations last time we met. William wanted to keep an eye on my wellbeing, as well as chat about all the knife crime campaigning we’re doing.

She added: “Today is just magical. It’s a once in a lifetime experience, so I’m really honoured to even be invited, let alone get to see them again.

“Last time I met (the Princess), I was quite down, so she just said she was so happy to see me full of energy and passion and enthusiasm again and it’s so nice to see you back to the way that you should be and the way that you were before. It was nice.”

The Mirror’s story also notes that the Princess spoke about Otto, their one-year-old cocker spaniel. 

She also chatted to one lady about the family’s one-year-old puppy Otto, revealing that “unfortunately” he had “chewed quite a lot the other day”.

“You have to keep them busy,” she said. “The first thing we do in the morning is check ‘has anyone taken Otto out?’”

Now, for our review of what Kate wore for today’s party.

It appears that the Princess was in a combination of Self-Portrait pieces, a custom look created for her by the label. The top appears to be from the brand’s Cream 3D Flower Polka Dot Midi Dress ($750), a wool-blend design with a double-breasted look, three-quarter sleeves, shoulder pads, a squared neckline, and an oversized flower adorning the bodice. The skirt looks a lot like the lower portion of the Belted Polka Dot Peated Midi Dress ($545 on sale), a soft, floaty piece showcasing pleats. 

This may be separates, or it could be a dress; the brand frequently offers dresses that look like separates. Here is a closer look at the jacket; the Princess’s belt is cream to match the jacket, not black as seen in the product photos.

The Princess wore her hair partially pulled back.

She debuted a vintage hat from The Hat Circle, a straw design by Mitzi Lorenz (£135/$183) with black floral embellishment and an oversized black net bow at the back.

We learn more about the milliner from this piece by the Vintage Fashion Guild. 

Mitzi Lorenz was apparently born in Vienna, Austria in March 1911 and became interested in a millinery career when she was 15 years old and apprenticed in a fashion house in Vienna.

As the Mitzi Lorenz business grew amid plaudits for the creations, Madam Lorenz was referred to as a “hat-making legend…a famous maker of model millinery…a brilliant artist…etc.” and in 1992 Lorenz referred to herself as the world’s oldest milliner. In October 1999 Mitzi/Marie Lorenz died at 88 years of age.

The Hat Circle offers contemporary and vintage hats for sale and/or rental, noting, “Let’s celebrate sustainability and give a new purpose to these beautiful, quintessential hats from the past.” Thank you to Gabi for identifying this piece. 

Other accessories included the Princess’s Lily Woven Clutch (sold out) by Australian brand Forever New. It was first carried for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee National Service of Thanksgiving in June 2022. 

We saw the Ralph Lauren Celia Pumps ($750) again today.

Jewelry included the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings and the Nigel Milne triple-strand pearl bracelet that originally belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales. The bracelet features three strands of cultured pearls with diamond and pearl spacers and clasp.I’ll leave you with one more photo from the party.
