Lenovo, Compal Set Up Laptop Production Venture in China

Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Lenovo Group Ltd., the world’s third-biggest maker of personal computers, will team up with Compal Electronics Inc. to make laptops in China as it looks to boost production. The two companies may invest a combined $300 million in the venture in the eastern Chinese city of Hefei over the next 18 months, they said in an e-mailed statement today. Lenovo climbed 11 percent, the most since May 2009, to HK$4.96 at the 4 p.m. close in Hong Kong trading, while Compal rose 2.2 percent to NT$30.15 in Taipei. Lenovo, which acquired the PC division of International Business Machines Corp. in 2005 to expand outside China, is boosting production and expects to overtake Dell Inc. this year as the second-biggest vendor globally. Compal, based in Taipei, is the world’s second-biggest contract maker of laptop computers and a supplier to Lenovo’s rivals, including Hewlett-Packard Co. and Acer Inc. Lenovo will hold 51 percent of the venture and Compal will own the rest, according to the statement. The venture is expected to start “full-scale” production by the end of 2012, the companies said. Lenovo, with headquarters in Beijing and North Carolina, acquired control of Medion AG and the PC operations of NEC Corp. this year to expand in Germany and Japan. Lenovo accounted for 12 percent of global shipments of PCs in the quarter ended June 30, up from 9.7 percent in the previous three months, according to research company Gartner Inc. Suspects in DPS laptop thefts charged

Four men accused of operating a crime ring that stole and sold Detroit Public Schools laptops were bound over for trial Thursday on charges including running a criminal enterprise and breaking and entering, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.
The charges against the four -- Brian Rogers, Dwaine Scott, Mark Scott and Jaisaun Holt -- carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison. Arraignment is set for June 9.
The defendants are among 10 men accused of stealing and selling 104 laptops, worth a total of more than $158,000, from four school building from December 2009 to January 2010.
Michigan State University football player Dion Sims pleaded guilty to one felony count of receiving and concealing stolen property in connection with the case. He was sentenced to a year of probation.

Region Man pleads guilty in hoax to Coast Guard

A Detroit man is facing up to six years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to making a hoax call about a capsized boat to the U.S. Coast Guard, costing the government $53,000 in search
and rescue efforts.
Craig Sanders, 32, made the fake call March 11. He said his boat was in Lake Erie and that he couldn't find his buddy, authorities said. An eight-hour Coast Guard search-and-rescue mission included units from Ohio and a helicopter from the Air National Guard Base.
Sanders will be sentenced Sept. 6. He faces a possible $250,000 fine and could be held liable for the search and rescue costs.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M Debuts in Gaming Laptops

The GTX acronym is reserved for Nvidia's finest GPUs that are designed for all-around gaming, but it's been a while since the company launched one for laptops. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M debuts today with some notable improvements, including support for a graphics-switching technology called Optimus and improved frame rates at 1080p resolutions.
This marks the first time Nvidia is introducing its Optimus technology into a mobile GTX card. Optimus enables the switch to Intel's processor graphics when the gaming laptop is used for everything else besides hardcore gaming and 3D-intensive tasks. The purpose of a graphic switch is so that the battery can last longer on a single charge (Intel's graphics doesn't demand as much from the battery as an Nvidia chip). During serious gameplay, the GTX 560M takes over.
Most gaming laptops come with huge screens that can scale to 1,920-by-1,080 resolution (or 1080p), but few gaming chips can handle 3D games at this resolution, while cranking up all the quality settings. The GTX 560M can handle games like Crysis 2, Duke Nukem Forever, and Age of Conan at this resolution, with all the details, such as textures and shadows, maxed out. At these settings, Nvidia claims that its GTX chip can easily achieve 30 to 40 frames per second in Crysis 2 and Duke Nukem.
Nvidia will continue to support Direct X 11 and SLI configurations in the GTX 560M, and Toshiba and Alienware will be the first OEMs that'll use it in their mobile gaming rigs.

Sony is growing its Vaio laptop portfolio with the introduction of new S Series and F Series models.

Introduced May 25, the 13.3-inch S Series is geared toward business travelers and students, or really anyone wanting a solid, thin and light notebook (but not needing the hardcore enterprise features of a Lenovo). While the F Series, with its high-resolution 16.4-inch widescreen display, was created with gaming and entertainment enthusiasts in mind.

The magnesium-and-aluminum S Series has a starting weight of 3.8 pounds — with the standard lithium-polymer battery — and measures 0.95 inches thick. There's the option of up to an Intel Core i7 processor, as a well as a sold-separately sheet battery (for $150) that can boost battery life to 15 hours.

"You can fly nonstop from Los Angeles to Tokyo or attend a full day of classes on just one charge with this S Series laptop when combined with the optional sheet battery," Mike Lucas, senior vice president of Sony’s Networked Technology and Services Division, said in a statement.

Regarding the S Series' obliging nature, performance is another feature Sony would like to stress. Select models include an AMD Radeon HD 6630 1GB Hybrid Graphics card with 1GB VRAM — which is said to offer "premium visual quality and intense HD performance without placing huge demands on the CPU," in addition to optimizing the machine's overall performance.

It features a backlit keyboard, as well as dedicated Vaio, Assist and Web buttons for launching the Media Gallery software, Vaio Care software and Internet, respectively, without the need to fully boot-up Windows. For video conferencing or chatting there's a Webcam with an Exmore sensor for a better experience in low-light situations and face-tracking technology that helps the camera to follow a user and adjust the focus on him or her.

On the multimedia front, the S Series offers the option of a Blu-ray drive and, courtesy of Intel Wireless Display 2.0 technology, the ability to wirelessly streaming videos, music and photos to an HDTV.

As for the F Series, Sony is calling it a "powerhouse." Its 16.4-inch widescreen display has a resolution of 1920 by 1080, and Sony's outfitted it with S-Force Front Surround 3D technology and Dolby Home Theater v3 sound. The graphics are trusted to a 1GB Nvidia GeForce 540M or 512MB 520M chip, and there's the option of up to a 750GB HDD.

The Webcam and Exmor sensor, backlit keyboard, and dedicated Vaio, Assist and Web buttons are on board, along with the Windows 7 Home Premium OS, USB 3.0 ports — for the super-quick transfer of data — A/V control buttons for pausing, stopping and playing, and the ability to connect to a PlayStation 3 or other Sony gaming devices using a Remote Keyboard.

Both new Vaios are now available for pre-sale. The S Series starts at $1,350 and comes in burnished brown, jet black or platinum silver — though wait until June and Sony will add pink and blue options to the mix.

The F Series, in a choice of matte black, silver, or premium white, starts at $1,100.

Lenovo introduced two products designed for high-end business user at its North American partner conference earlier this week--the ThinkPad X1 and ThinkCentre Edge 91z All-In-One (AIO) desktop.

The ThinkPad X1 is Lenovo's thinnest laptop at 0.85-inches thick, and it has a 13.3-inch screen and weighs 3.8-pounds. The company is touting the laptop's ability to charge its battery quickly, saying it will charge to 80% of capacity in 30 minutes, although there is no word how long the other 20% takes. Samsung's Google Laptop Is a Best Buy

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The formal name for the laptop is the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook, and it will be available from Amazon(AMZN ) and Best Buy(BBY ) starting June 15. The WiFi-only version will be $429, and the version that includes Verizon EV-DO service will be $499.

There are some people in this world who like to spend a lot of time hacking and tinkering with their computers. They take pride in how many hours or days per week that they can tune their application installs, tweak their antivirus settings and re-architect their various backup methodologies. Often enough, these people also wipe their PCs clean and reinstall all of their stuff -- and they love it, the more often, the merrier.

These people are equivalent to those in the car world who love to get under the hood and fix problems. If they can spend their entire weekends getting under their cars with tools, fixing and upgrading, they are in heaven.
