Skunk Odors – Unveiling the Truth about Skunk Scents

(800) 457-8630

Skunks are notorious for their strong, pungent smell, but it’s a common misconception that these animals are constantly surrounded by an unbearable odor. In this article, we’ll discuss the truth about skunk odors and why skunks don’t always stink. We’ll also provide helpful tips on how to handle skunk encounters and how to remove skunk scents effectively.

Understanding Skunk Odors

What Makes Skunks Smell?

Skunks produce their notorious scent through their anal glands, which contain a mixture of sulfur-containing chemicals called thiols. This potent liquid is used as a defense mechanism against predators, and it’s released when the skunk feels threatened or frightened.

Skunks Don’t Always Stink – The Myth Debunked

Contrary to popular belief, skunks don’t emit their infamous odor constantly. In fact, skunks only release their scent when they feel threatened, as it is their primary defense mechanism. When they’re not threatened, skunks actually have a fairly mild odor.

Tips for Handling Skunk Encounters

Keep Your Distance To avoid being sprayed by a skunk, it’s essential to keep a safe distance if you encounter one. Skunks are generally non-aggressive and will only spray if they feel cornered or threatened.

Use Light and Sound Skunks have poor vision, so using bright lights or making loud noises can deter them from approaching your property. However, be cautious not to frighten the skunk too much, as this may lead to an unwanted release of their scent.

Removing Skunk Odors Effectively

Neutralizing Skunk Odors on Pets If your pet has been sprayed by a skunk, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap can help neutralize the odor. Make sure to rinse your pet thoroughly afterward and avoid getting the solution in their eyes, ears, or mouth.

Cleaning Skunk-Sprayed Clothing and Outdoor Items To remove skunk odors from clothing or outdoor items, soak them in a mixture of vinegar and water or use an enzyme-based cleaner specifically designed for breaking down thiols.

Dealing with Skunk Odors Indoors If the skunk odor has entered your home, ventilate the space by opening windows and using fans. You can also use activated charcoal or baking soda to help absorb and neutralize the smell.

Skunks don’t always stink, but when they do, it’s important to know how to handle the situation and remove the odor effectively. By understanding skunk behavior and using the right cleaning techniques, you can minimize the impact of skunk encounters and maintain a fresh and odor-free environment.

Skunks spraying around your house? Are you waking up to that horrible skunk odor?

Skunks are known to release a powerful smell through their anal glands when threatened. Skunks will usually only attack when cornered or defending their young, and spraying is not the first method of defense. A skunk will growl, spit, fluff its fur, shake its tail, and stamp the ground. If the intruder does not leave, the skunk will then lift its tail and spray its famous skunk odor.

Do Skunks Stink All The Time?

The telltale of a skunk’s presence is usually known only after the skunk has intentionally sprayed his scent to ward off a perceived threat. Among captive skunks, those who are de-scented have no skunk odor to speak of, but a pet skunk in possession of his scent glands may release odor without meaning to.

Do Skunks Spray For No Reason?

Skunks are one of the most misunderstood wild animals. People don’t realize that the skunk is actually a very docile, benign animal whose severe near-sightedness often gets them in trouble. Skunk odor is famous and strikes fear in everyone who encounters them. A skunk’s only defense is a certain noxious odor created by a sulfuric acid “fired” from the anal glands. But skunks have a limited supply of ammunition. They don’t waste their defensive spray because they can’t “re-load” very quickly, so they don’t waste their defensive spray. Instead, they often stamp their front feet as a warning if another creature gets too close, giving ample opportunity for the “threat” to back off.

Can A Skunk’s Spray Kill You?

High concentrations of skunk spray are toxic and potentially fatal to humans, according to a 1999 study in Chemical Educator. Their powerful oily spray has been compared to tear gas because it can cause temporary blindness, coughing, and gagging. I’m not sure if a skunk’s spray can kill you, but it smells so bad that you may wish you were dead.

Are Baby Skunks Able To Spray At Birth?

Allow me to define some terminology and explain a few things regarding skunk musk. To “spray” – typically if there is odor then it is said that a skunk has sprayed. I would like to correct that common misunderstanding. When a skunk “sprays” it is in a defensive posture with intent and purpose – to back off an attacker.

There are other times however when a skunk may emit musk without a defensive cause. When it is injured, ill or dying a skunk may, or may not, emit some musk. This is more of an involuntary reaction, similar to an accidental passing of wind or stool. When it is dying it is a relaxing of the gland muscles. When an orphan gets hurt somehow, it will give a squirt in reaction to the pain and fright. This is mostly involuntary. Also during mating there is commonly discharge of the glands because mating is violent with skunks. The aggression is what causes the female to ovulate, and express her glands in the process.

When babies become toddlers in a rehab setting and you add other toddlers to the cage, or should they become startled or confronted, there will be “whiffing” among them. “Whiffing” is not a true spray, it is more like a reaction, a passing of wind so to speak. I can’t tell this skunk odor from any other.

A skunk is born with its scent glands and is capable of emitting some degree of musk from day one. The only cause for one so young to emit musk would be injury. Before they open their eyes a skunk has no real reason to spray, they cannot see a would-be target, nor do they feel the need to defend. The only thing a baby skunk with its eyes still closed wants is to be taken care of.

Once their eyes open, between 14 – 28 days, they become suddenly aware of their surroundings and startle easily. They may throw their tail up frequently, but that does not necessarily mean they are ready and willing to spray. The raised tail is merely a reaction and indicates a healthy, alert skunk. A raised tail can also be a sign of playfulness.

Most people are afraid of skunks because they fear getting sprayed just by the mere presence of the animal. In reality, it is usually harder to get a skunk to spray than one might think – you notice I wrote usually. Skunks do not spray because we expect them to. Skunks spray to defend themselves. A chance encounter with a skunk in your yard or the park is no cause for alarm. Simply remain calm and walk away casually so as not to alarm the skunk – I’m sure you’re asking, what about alarming me. A skunk will usually give several warnings before resorting to spray. They stomp their front feet, they stomp and drag back, they will do short charges then do hand stands (acrobatic animals aren’t they). Given the opportunity, a skunk will usually run away rather than spray. They carry enough fluid for several sprays, however, once the glands are empty it takes a little time for them to refill, thus leaving the skunk vulnerable for a period of time. This is the last thing a skunk wants, therefore they use their weapon wisely and sparingly (at least the adults do, the young ones are a little quick on the “trigger” sometimes).

There is one situation that I commonly hear about that I am unsure of the cause. I often hear that skunks under a house or barn are stinking the place up. To be honest, I am not sure why they do this, though I would like to figure it out. This skunk odor is frequently the trigger for people to call us to trap and remove the skunks.

When I approach any skunk, I do so with calm caution, slow easy movements. I am also reading their body language. I do not fear them, but I do respect them and their weapon. I’m not emitting any negative energy for them to pick up on. Animals sense our anxieties and respond accordingly, and I certainly want to smell that horrible skunk odor.

Can Skunks Spray When They Are Babies?

Baby skunks are easier to handle prior to adolescence, but will spray if they are scared. Skunks can carry rabies. Any skunk large enough to require two hands to pick up is old enough to be on its own. The public should not handle any injured adult skunk.

What To Do If You Or Your Pet Gets Sprayed By A Skunk

Mix the following:

1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide.

1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).

1 teaspoon of Dawn liquid dish detergent.

Mix these together and bathe (“shampoo” in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.

Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.

This is a great concoction to get rid of a skunk odor.

How Many Times Can A Skunk Spray

The spray is an oily liquid produced by glands underneath the skunk’s tail. A skunk’s spray can go almost 10 feet and the skunk can spray up to six times in succession. After a full discharge, it can take a skunk up to 10 days to resupply.

Wild Animal Winter Guests

Wild animal Winter guests will be arriving soon and you may need to hire a Virginia animal removal company to resolve your problem. When winter weather arrives, some pests go into hibernation while others enter homes seeking warmth and food sources. The National Pest Management Association encourages homeowners to take several precautions against common winter pests like mice, rats, raccoons, and squirrels. If you have wild animals nesting in your home or if you get them this winter, do not hesitate to contact Wildlife Removal In Virginia. Our local animal removal experts will rid your home of the pest and take measures to prevent further infestations.

Follow this guide of quick tips to PREVENT an infestation over the next few months.

Norway Rats

Norway rats often nest in basements, piles of debris and other undisturbed materials. They are known to gnaw through almost anything – including plastic or lead pipes – to obtain food or water. Norway rats are also a vector of many diseases like jaundice, rat-bite fever and cowpox virus. Contact us about our local rat removal services.

Quick tips:

Norway rats can fit through an opening as small as ½ inch (or the size of a quarter). Inspect the outside of the home for any gaps or crack and fill them with silicone caulk.

Eliminate sources of moisture in crawl spaces and basements.

Regularly inspect inside the home for signs of an infestation, including greasy rub marks caused by the rat’s oily fur.

House Mice

The house mouse is the most commonly encountered rodent in the United States. House mice usually nest in dark, secluded areas like attics and basements. This rodent can cause serious property damage by chewing through drywall and also wires that can then spark an electrical fire. House mice are also known to contaminate food and spread diseases, including Salmonella and tapeworms. Contact us for information on our effective mouse control programs.

Quick tips:

Mice can fit through an opening as small as a dime. Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home with caulk, spray insulation and/or steel wool.

Keep areas clear and store boxes off of the floor because mice like to hide in clutter.

Regularly inspect the home for signs of mice, such as droppings, gnaw marks and damaged food.

Raccoons

Raccoons are commonly found in the wooded eastern portions of the country. This type of wild animal occasionally enters homes through attics or chimneys in search of a denning site. Raccoons are a major host of rabies in the United States. Our local animal removal experts know how to get rid of raccoons in the attic and those that might be living in your homes chimney or fireplace.

Quick tips:

Store trashcans and recycling bins in sealed areas such as a locked shed or outhouse. If trashcans are kept outdoors, use animal-proof lids.

Inspect the outside of your home for access points, such as broken vent covers. Repair any loose siding or shingles.

Install a mesh cover or cap over chimneys and other exposed openings to prevent entry. Also, keep tree branches trimmed back from the house.

Squirrels

Tree squirrels don’t hibernate but remain active all winter long. This presents a physiological challenge because not only is the outside temperature much colder – requiring extra energy expenditure to maintain a high mammalian body temperature – food is also scarce. Although tree squirrels do remain active, active is a relative term. One of the strategies tree squirrels use to cope with cold temperatures is to do what we all wish we could do in the winter – stay in bed. Tree squirrels aren’t really very well adapted to live in cold conditions. Their fur gets thicker but not greatly so, they put on more fat, but not huge amounts, and their resting metabolic rate remains high. Are squirrels living in your attic? Squirrels chewing electric wires? Squirrels damaging insulation? Our local animal removal professionals can help get rid of these critters quickly and effectively.

Quick Tips

Make sure any food sources in the basement, attic or crawlspace (example: pet food) are safely sealed in plastic containers

Trim tree branches that may overhang the roof line.

Remove firewood stacked against the building.

If there are cracks in the foundational wall, repair them.

Seal all entry points

Unveiling the Mysterious World of Virginia Bats

Virginia is home to an incredible variety of bat species, each with unique features and behaviors. These fascinating nocturnal creatures play a vital role in our ecosystem, making it essential to understand and appreciate them. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into intriguing Virginia bat facts, explore their habitats, and learn how to help conserve these winged wonders.

Species of Bats in Virginia

Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus)

Also known as the common brown bat, this species has a wingspan of 12 to 16 inches and is characterized by its glossy, dark brown fur. Big brown bats primarily roost in attics, barns, and other man-made structures.

Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus)

As its name suggests, this smaller bat has a wingspan of 8 to 11 inches and is typically found roosting in caves, tree hollows, and buildings. Little brown bats are known for their agility and swift flight.

Virginia Big-Eared Bat (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus)

This rare species, which is the state bat of Virginia, is easily recognized by its oversized ears and distinct facial features. Virginia big-eared bats prefer limestone caves for roosting and are a federally endangered species.

Eastern Red Bat (Lasiurus borealis)

This tree-dwelling bat is known for its striking reddish fur and white-tipped tail. Eastern red bats roost in tree foliage and are solitary creatures, only coming together during migration or mating.

Other Bat Species

Virginia is also home to several other bat species, including the silver-haired bat, hoary bat, and the eastern small-footed bat, each with its unique characteristics.

Bats’ Diets and Foraging Habits

Virginia bats primarily feed on insects, making them natural pest controllers. They consume large quantities of mosquitoes, moths, beetles, and other insects. Most bat species in Virginia use echolocation, emitting high-frequency sounds that bounce off objects to locate their prey.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Bats typically mate during the fall, with females storing sperm until spring when they ovulate. Females give birth to one or two pups in late spring or early summer, and the young bats learn to fly within a month.

Threats and Conservation Efforts

Virginia bats face numerous threats, including habitat loss, white-nose syndrome, and wind turbines. To help protect these essential creatures, consider installing bat houses, minimizing outdoor lighting, and supporting local conservation organizations.

Get Involved with Bat Conservation in Virginia

Join bat walks, attend educational events, and spread the word about the importance of bats to inspire others to join the conservation efforts. Together, we can ensure a bright future for these incredible nocturnal neighbors.

Virginia bats are fascinating creatures with essential roles in our ecosystem. By understanding and appreciating their unique characteristics, we can work together to conserve their habitats and ensure their survival for generations to come.

Recently, we have seen an unusually large amount of bat issues in Henrico, Glen Allen, Midlothian, Richmond, Charlottesville and other areas in Central Virginia. The average colony size in our area is 10-12 bats, but in a maternity colony the size grows exponentially.

Facts About Bat Removal in Virginia

The main species of bats that get into Virginia homes are the Little Brown Bat, Big Brown Bat and the Evening Bat.

The main entry points for bats entering our home are attic vents, fascia gaps/openings or any gap/opening 3/8” or larger.

Bats in our area give birth usually from May – August. Little Brown bats have 1 pup, Big Brown bats have 2-pups.

Bats should never be killed or harmed in any way – they’re good for the environment.

If a bat gets into the living quarters of your home: a) Don’t kill it – you may lose the ability to have it tested for rabies, and b) don’t release it back outside – you’ll lose the ability to test it for rabies and it will usually reenter the structure.

If a bat gets into the living quarters of your home: DO – call your local animal control officer (they usually work thru your local police department or sheriffs’ office). They will come get the bat and submit it for rabies testing free of charge. AND Do – call us for an assessment of your bat infestation. It is unusual for a home to only have a single bat.

Bat removal and control is a process (usually involves 4-5 steps). It is not like removing a squirrel or raccoon from your home. Leave it to experts like us that are NWCOA Bat Standards Compliant Certified (unlike most so called bat experts in Virginia). A bat job done incorrectly is sometimes worse than doing nothing at all.

Bat house’s don’t seem to be effective. We’ve only seen one that was actually occupied with bats.

Bats are good for the environment, but not your home or business. They can carry rabies, their droppings (poop) contains a fungus that can cause a lung disease called histoplasmosis, can infest your home with bat bugs (similar to bed bugs), can cause unpleasant odors, and can stain your walls and ceilings.

There is NO repellants approved for use on bats. Companies and individuals that spray for bats may be violating Federal and State law, and exposing you and your family to harmful chemicals.

Bat guano (droppings, poop) is toxic and the removal should be left to experts.

Bat nets are not an effective or recommended method of bat removal.

Wildlife control and pest control IS NOT the same thing. Pest control = bugs, and wildlife control = nuisance wild animals

Bat removal should only be done by professionals that are licensed, insured, trained, certified, and experienced. Bats removal is not for the novice or untrained.

Our highest calls for service involving bats is usually during the bat birthing season (May – August).

No two bat jobs are the same. Anyone that gives a price over the phone (without a bat inspection of your property) for bat removal does not know what they are doing – Avoid them like the plague!!

By next year, doing bat removal in Virginia will require special training and certification = we already have this training/certification. Just because a company/person has been removing bats for many years DOES NOT mean they are doing it correctly.

Due to the nature of bat bites (small, often unnoticed), evaluating exposures to bats is different than evaluating exposures to terrestrial mammals. Therefore, anyone who has been: 1. bitten by a bat and knows he has been bitten, OR 2. in direct, bare-skinned contact with a bat and cannot rule out that a bite has not occurred OR 3. in a room with a bat and is unable to tell or articulate whether an exposure took place (e.g., infant, senile or unconscious adult) should be considered exposed.* *Particularly in situations involving mentally competent adults where the only evidence of potential exposure is scenario #3 above, further evaluation should be performed to ascertain the likelihood of being exposed without being aware of the exposure.

Other Interesting Bat Facts

Bats are the only mammal that can truly fly.

Virginia has 17 of the more than 1,000 bat species worldwide.

Three of the bat species in Virginia are federal endangered species (Gray Bat, Indiana Bat, and Virginia Big-eared Bat); the Rafinesque’s Big-eared Bat, also known as the Eastern Big-eared Bat, is a state threatened and endangered species.

The bats in Virginia are divided into two categories: cave bats and tree bats. Cave bats hibernate in caves, while tree bats hibernate in leaf clusters, under decaying logs, in hollow trees, or sometimes in abandoned mines or old buildings.

Bats can live more than 10 years and some species can live up to 30 years.

Owls, hawks, raccoons, skunks and other animals prey on bats.

Our Service Areas

Wild animal moms nest where they think best. Many wild animals are having babies now, and like most moms, wild animal moms want to raise their wild babies in a safe, warm place. Some may decide that your chimney, attic, garage or under your porch is the perfect spot.

Waiting, watching and enjoying having them around until they’re ready to leave might be entertaining and even educational, it could create numerous problems for you and your family. Wild animals such as raccoons, squirrels, foxes, opossums, etc can make a mess around your property and (sometimes) inside your home; they carry diseases, parasites, insects; and they may sometimes be violent and dangerous. This year in particular, many of the common wild animals who become a nuisance to humans are multiplying at a higher rate. We have removed a mother raccoon with 4 young and a mother fox with 7 young in the past 2 weeks and the calls are still coming in.

It is very important to contact a local wildlife expert in Richmond or Charlottesville Virginia instead of trying to trap and relocate wild animals on your own. The mother could be dangerously defensive of her young and if you are able to remove the mother, babies may end up being left behind and helpless. Professionals will know where to look for them. Also, moving wildlife to an unfamiliar area can put them in danger of predators and they may not be able to find enough food.

We are considered by most to be the Central Virginia areas top rated snake removal company.
The northern copperhead is venomous (poisonous) and can be found all over the State of Virginia. The northern copperhead is a pit-viper, as are all three of Virginia’s venomous snake species (northern copperhead, eastern cottonmouth and timber rattlesnake). The “pit” in pit-viper refers to the heating sensing pit located between the eye and the nostrils on the snake’s head. In addition to the heat sensing pit all three venomous snakes in Virginia have vertical pupils. All harmless snakes in Virginia have round pupils and lack the heat sensing pits.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The length of this species is 24-36 inches and the color is coppery-red on the head with an hourglass pattern. There are dark rounded spots at the sides of belly and the scales are weakly keeled. The dorsum of the body and tail are pinkish tan to dark brown and almost black, with hourglass shaped crossbands colored chestnut to dark brown; most dorsal scales are sprinkled with black flecks; head is triangular and the labial region of chin and the venter are cream colored; the neck is narrow and the dorsum of the head is flat. Adult males are generally larger than females; Juveniles have the same color patterns as the adults, except the tip of the tail is a sulfur yellow and lack the black flecking of the adults. There is some regional differences in body color and pattern throughout Virginia. At least seven melanistic individuals have been documented. The record length is 53 inches.

Holes In Your Yard – Moles Or Voles

Holes in your yard usually mean Moles in your yard, and it doesn’t look good! Moles are small mammals adapted to a subterranean lifestyle. They have cylindrical bodies, velvety fur, very small, inconspicuous ears and eyes, reduced hindlimbs and short, powerful forelimbs with large paws adapted for digging. Moles have been found to tolerate higher levels of carbon dioxide than other mammals, because their blood cells have a special and unique haemoglobin protein. Moles are able to reuse the oxygen inhaled when above ground, and as a result, are able to survive in low-oxygen environments such as underground burrows.

Moles burrow lawns, raising molehills. They can undermine plant roots, indirectly causing damage or death. Their destruction, as with most nuisance animals, is caused simply because the animal is looking for food. A mole’s diet primarily consists of earthworms and other small invertebrates found in the soil, and a variety of nuts. The mole tunnels are in reality ‘worm traps’, the mole sensing when a worm falls into the tunnel and quickly running along to kill and eat it. Because a mole’s saliva contains a toxin that can paralyze earthworms, moles are able to store their still-living prey for later consumption. They construct special underground “larders” for just this purpose; researchers have discovered such larders with over a thousand earthworms in them.

Habits of Beavers

The industrious beaver doesn’t concern itself with the damage it causes to your property or the costs which may range into thousands of dollars in just a few weeks. The beaver causes a tremendous amount of damage in Virginia through their dam building and tree cutting activities. They can impede or affect the structural integrity of roads, railroad trestles, and manmade waterways. Beavers can be a potential health hazard, as they are hosts to several ectoparasites and internal parasites including, nematodes, trematodes, and coccidians.

The beaver is North America’s largest rodent and is built for life in the water. Adults can be up to four feet long and weigh over 60 pounds. The beaver has webbed hind feet and a large, flat, nearly hairless tail. It uses its tail to help maintain its balance when it is gnawing on trees. It will also slap its tail against the water to signal danger or to warn away predators. The beaver has short front legs with heavy claws. Their rear legs are longer, and their webbed feet help propel them through the water when they are swimming. When the beaver is under water, its nose and ears close up, and a special membrane covers its eyes.

Don’t let squirrels damage your home or disrupt your life. Contact our Virginia squirrel removal experts today for a free consultation and estimate. Let us help you regain peace of mind and a squirrel-free property.

When performing wildlife removal in Virginia we use humane, time-tested techniques for squirrel control and to prevent future infestations. We begin with an inspection to identify where, why and how squirrels enter your home or office building. If we find an infestation, we remove the squirrels using humane traps. Then to prevent more squirrels from entering, we use exclusion techniques to seal their entry ways. We also help you identify and secure potential food sources inside and outside to detract the squirrels from returning. If the squirrels left a mess, our team can also clean up and sanitize the infested areas and safely dispose of any waste.

The Habits Of A Squirrel

Squirrels feed on acorns, grasses, leaves and hard mast. They are frequent visitors of bird feeders and are a favorite to the delight or dismay of one’s view. Squirrel infestations are often easier to hear than see. Squirrels like warm, dry places and are typically found in chimneys and attics. You are most likely to hear them moving around during the day time, when they are most active.

Squirrels are a problem year round. They mate twice a year and are especially active during mating season: first in February and March, and again in July and August. When the mercury starts to drop in the fall, squirrels are known to enter homes and offices in search of warmth and food. They often nest within walls or crevices to stay close to the food source.

Squirrels can cause a lot of damage to your home. They are known to easily jump from trees to roofs where they gnaw their way into attics and destroy insulation. They chew electrical wires and drywall in order to make their nests. They will also chew through the fascia, soffits and aluminum gutters if persistent enough. Once inside the attic, they will gnaw rafters, joists, wiring and pipe insulation in order to keep the teeth worn down. They are in the rodent family and have four teeth that never stop growing. Sometimes on roofs the aluminum skylight frame and lead pipes on soil stacks will be gnawed also.

Bat Removal & Exclusion Services in Virginia is our specialty. We use humane, time-tested techniques for getting rid of bats, bat control and to prevent future infestations. We begin with an inspection to identify where, why and how bats enter your home or office building. If we find an infestation, we exclude the bats from their roosting locations. Then to prevent any bats from re-entering, we use exclusion techniques to seal their entry ways. Bats are very persistent and will search all available penetrations around a roof area for a new entry.

Our bat experts in Virginia are very skilled and methodical in the removal, exclusion, and prevention of bat activity. We also help you identify and secure whatever sources inside make your home the ideal roosting site to further detract the bats from returning. If the bats left a mess, our team can also clean up and sanitize the infested areas and safely dispose of any bat guano waste.

All of our Virginia bat control technicians are NWCOA Bat Standards Certified.

Habits Of Bats

When customers call us to remove bats, often they are found in a house’s gable vents, between chimneys and flashing and behind shutters. They are frequently found in older concrete and brick commercial buildings high around the roof-line where the settling has occurred. The normal signs that are seen are rub marks at entry points, rustling and chirping in voids, large accumulations of droppings ( bat guano) and the odors and organisms associated with the colonies. Some bats have state and federal protection.

There are three species of bats in Virginia that are Federally endangered and are therefore protected under the Endangered Species Act. This explicitly prohibits anyone from attempting to harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, or collect, or to attempt to engage in any such conduct any endangered or threatened species. As a top rated company for removing bats in Virginia, our technicians are trained and licensed to deal with and exclude the bats from your home safely and effectively, without harming them.

We can help you get control of your situation and yet keep the benefits provided by bats. Our technicians can provide and install bat houses on your property. This can help prevent the unwanted entry into your living spaces with the added benefit of keeping bugs under control. If you have large trees on your property and would like to provide shelter for these beneficial mammals, we can install the bat nesting boxes high up in some of your trees. They need to be placed around 15 feet up for the bats to use them.
