What are essential oils?

Essential oils are aromatic compounds found in seeds, bark, stems, flowers and other parts of a plant. If you have ever smelled lavender or a rose then you have enjoyed the aromatic qualities of essential oils. They give plants their smell, protection and assist in pollination. Along with the benefits to the plants essential oils have been used in food, beauty treatments or products and in some health care practices.

In short, these aromatic compounds are small organic molecules that change quickly from a solid or liquid state to a gas at room temperature. This allows them to interact with the olfactory sensors in the nose. This is why they are widely used in aromatherapy.

Singles Vs. Blends

Hello Captain Obvious! I am just kidding, but I thought I would state the obvious that the main difference. Single essential oils is exactly that, a single essential oil. A blend is exactly that, a blend of essential oils.

Now that the obvious is out of the way let’s dig a little deeper. A single essential oil comes from a s single type of plant. In some cases multiple species of that type of plant can be used to make the essential oil more potent. An essential oil blend is a blend of different types of plants to achieve a specific outcome. These essential oils are blended on purpose to serve a purpose.

CPTG

There truly is hardly any regulation or assurance that your essential oil is what it says it is, so the company we use and sell created their own standard called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade or CPTG for short or if you’re into acronyms.

The FDA has set a standard for the testing of essential oils but it is completely self regulated. Which allows companies to introduce fillers into their “100% Pure” essential oil that you buy off the shelf. In reality there is only 5% essential oil in the entire 10 ml bottle you just bought for $6.50. That means there is 95% of non essential oil in the bottle. It’s still bad if it’s 50% essential oil and 50% filler or what I like to call other stuff.

I call it other stuff because technically they don’t have to list it on the label if it meets the specified “pure” standard. On the other hand there are companies like the one we sell that set their own standard higher than the rest of the industry. Each company must complete 5 tests in house, but the company we sell does 8 total and some of those tests are with a non-biased third party tester. This is how they came up with CPTG or Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. That’s right, not only is it pure but it’s such high quality that it is considered therapeutic grade, meaning medicinal.

The CPTG label gives us confidence that we are buying the best.

This weeks Kids Spotlight

Greg – started Spanish Club at school, he bought a Spanish dictionary from our friend Alisha’s house when she was having a yard sale. He has carried it around reading from it ever since. He’s super excited about learning Spanish. He said he wanted to learn it just in case a new student came to his class and spoke Spanish. He wanted to be the one to be able to talk to them.

Turtle Turtle – started ballet and tap class officially. She’s been going but she is signed up officially now. She was on a Groupon thanks to Christina’s mom. She has been so cute dancing. They get these thin square pieces of mesh type material that they wave around while dancing around the room and she waves hers like she is queen. It’s awesome!

Beefcake – is totally obsessed with going outside. Every time we load up in our van he says outside, it rained for two days and he was so bummed. We finally got to out and he was so excited he could barely contain it, but spent most of the time sitting in the wagon with “Geg” eating oranges and bananas.

Something we’ve learned about oils…

Simple tip

Layering oils can help bring balance and joy by placing one oil in the palm of your hand, like balance. inhaling it, then rubbing it on the back of you neck and behind your ears. Do the same with elevation. Layering these two oils will ground you and lift you up.

Interesting tip

Neat vs. With FCO

Did you know that studies show that when you combine your essential oil with FCO there is less flash off, meaning more of the essential oil gets absorbed into your skin over a longer period of time? When an essential oil is applied without FCO it is called a Neat application, which allows your skin to absorb it quicker but more of the oil flashes off. Flash off is the term used for the essential oil that does not get absorbed and basically evaporates into it’s aromatic form.

Neat is the best application if you wish to inhale vs combining your oil with FCO for more absorption over a longer period of time.

Seasonal tip

Use On Guard Hand Soap to wash your hands. We make our own with On Guard essential oil and Pure Castile Soap. We have also made it using the On Guard Cleaner Concentrate. Not sure what that is let us know in the comments and we can send you a link or set up a phone conversation with you.
