If the vast majority of comments from Irish supporters in our inbox can be taken as an accurate gauge of how this weekend’s showdown at Lansdowne Road will pan out, then Ireland don’t have a chance.

It’s tough to blame the home faithful for losing their faith given Ireland’s record this year. Declan Kidney’s team have lost seven out of eleven matches and looked unconvincing in last Saturday’s 20-10 win against Samoa.

Perhaps the criticism is a little harsh? Sure, Ireland were dominated up front by South Africa but they only lost by two points in the end. Samoa gave them a real scare but that was arguably the best team in blue ever to visit Europe.

Test rugby is a game of small margins – if you’re just a little off song, the punishment is usually severe. If we take the comments coming out of the Irish camp at face value, then the hosts are confident that they can fix a few areas and give the All Blacks a run for their money.

But if ever there was a unit that punishes their opposition for the small errors mentioned above, it’s the current crop of men in black.

What stood out in the All Blacks’ win against Scotland was the ruthless manner in which the tourists went about their business. Even when they were over 30 points ahead, when most teams would have switched to cruise control, they continued to hammer away.

Ireland need to shape up – and fast – or they risk suffering the same fate as their Northern Hemisphere counterparts at Murrayfield. For all their insistence that confidence hasn’t taken a slump and that the atmosphere in the camp is positive, they surely cannot be immune to the criticism from outside. Just how the hosts react if New Zealand take an early lead will be interesting to see.

Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” What seems to irritate Irish fans the most is Kidney’s insistence in picking a virtually unchanged team (compared to the side that faced South Africa), despite their lack or results.

Former New Zealand scrum-half Justin Marshall told an Irish newspaper this week that he reckons there isn’t a single player in the Irish team that would be selected for the All Blacks on current form. Marshall obviously could never be the most objective pundit, but he probably isn’t far off the mark.

But would wholesale changes to the hosts’ team turn the bus around? We’re not sure. Good players don’t turn bad over night. That said, there’s one or two names in that pack that might be past their sell-by date.

In stark contrast, all the news this week regarding the All Blacks has been about records. Mils Muliaina and Richie McCaw will become New Zealand’s most capped players on Saturday. If all goes to plan Graham Henry will be rewarded with his 100th Test win as a coach and Dan Carter could become the most prolific points scorer from any nation in Test history.

The Kiwis must be ruing last month’s defeat in Hong Kong more than ever as the world record for most consecutive wins would surely have been within their grasps by now.

Of course, Henry has troubles of his own. He has to leave one of Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu and Sonny Bill Williams out of his team every week. Poor guy.

Ones to watch:

For Ireland: Just when we all thought it was time to put Ronan O’Gara out to pasture, he almost pulls the game out of the fire against South Africa and then scores the winning try against Samoa. Jonathan Sexton has to live up to the faith put in him this week. Amid growing calls from some parts of the Irish public to see Sean O’Brien given a spot in the team, David Wallace is also under pressure to come up with a big game.

For New Zealand: The hottest topic of debate in New Zealand right now is ‘who should start in midfield?’. Sonny Bill Williams’ performance last week set the bar pretty high, so expect a reaction from Conrad Smith and Ma’a Nonu. The opposition his week is high class so a strong game from the Hurricanes’ duo will go a long way to helping them retain their status as the incumbents .

Head-to-head: Ireland have disappointed at scrum time this month and the All Blacks won’t be too proud of their set-piece performance at Twickenham either. It all starts up front – if the Irish backs don’t get the ball on the front foot, their cause is lost.

The Dutch are Unclutch, or so the stereotype goes. Every time they get a great team together, they promptly fall apart and throw away the tournament.
World Cups. European Championships. The years and venues and players change, the story stays the same. No world power is more disappointing.

“When we win, we tend to be a bit arrogant,” said coach Bert van Marwijk on Monday, on the eve of a World Cup semifinal here against Uruguay.
Now, this is some humorous stuff.
The Dutch are arrogant? The Dutch suffer from overconfidence?
This is a nation best known for windmills, tulips and wooden clogs. It boasts a fan base that wears bright orange – and gets the joke. They are suckers for brass bands. They go nuts for trendy sports such as long track speedskating. They put mayonnaise on French fries. The nation’s biggest city, Amsterdam, is famed for its legalized marijuana and front-window red light district. People still commute by canal boat. Or bicycle.
You want to know about the Netherlands? Well, you can walk into a movie theater in Amsterdam and buy a beer. And I don’t mean just like in no paper cup, I’m talking about a glass of beer.
If ever there was a country that didn’t take itself too seriously – one that would presumably lack self-confidence – it’s the Netherlands. The warm, friendly, welcoming and decidedly unpretentious Netherlands. Everyone loves the Dutch. These are some of the nicest people on earth.
Yet, there they are. They win a few soccer games and for some reason they completely lose their mind. And after besting mighty Brazil – with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory, no less – the possibility for arrogance is obvious.
The only thing standing in the way of the Netherlands’ first finals appearance since 1978 is Uruguay, a small South American nation whose coach spent most of Monday’s press conference complaining about his invasive local media … which is considerably smaller than the horde that covers, say, the New York Yankees. He called them “war correspondents.”
Uruguay is a big underdog, with a number of missing stars (handballer Luis Suarez included) only further stacking the odds against them.
“In some countries they have more footballers than the 3 million people inhabiting Uruguay,” noted coach Oscar Tabarez.
He followed that up with this bold bit of trash talk:
“I think it’s fair to say we have a fairly modest hope we can have the effort to win.”
So look out. The Dutch have a history of overconfidence, and Uruguay would instill overconfidence in any semifinal opponent (heavyweights Spain and Germany play Wednesday).
So now everyone is nervous. Which means, for perhaps the first time ever, it’s worth reminding the good people of Amsterdam that they should just chill out. Maybe they can keep the “coffee” shops open late to help preserve civil order.
“I’ve said many times, I can’t change a culture, but I’ve worked very hard to make this group of players realize if you want to win something in a tournament, you must always focus on the next game,” van Marwijk said. “You are talking about the past that we never really made it, that we failed.”
Well, the Dutch did win the 1988 European Championship, the only major title the nation has won. Other than that it’s been a string of disappointments. Two World Cup finals losses in 1974 and 1978 were tough. Not getting back since has been tougher.

At Euro 2008, the Dutch destroyed World Cup finalists France and Italy in group play and appeared unstoppable. They were an overwhelming favorite in the quarterfinals, only to lose to lightly regarded Russia.
It was a stunning result. And the heart of that team is the heart of this team.
“As we said, it’s a long process,” van Marwijk said of building the mentality to close a team out.
How the heck the Dutch got so arrogant is a mystery. It’s undeniably their curse, though. Scan their history and current roster and you can actually see it. From Ruud van Nistelrooy to Rafael van der Vaart. Those are some regal – read: arrogant – names there.
And what’s with a country that calls itself the Netherlands and Holland? Yet its people are Dutch. That’s the equivalent of referring to yourself in the third person.
So history looms over Cape Town like the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. The joke is that the only team capable of beating the Netherlands is Holland, and Holland is favored.
For his part, van Marwijk kept trying to lower expectations and grew agitated when reporters asked about the finals, not the semifinals.

“I really don’t want to talk about the final. I’ve been hearing this much too often. First we have to play a semifinal. I didn’t come to this tournament to wring my hands once we achieved that. Achieving the final is not enough. You want to win the final. But I am not even thinking of that.”
Actually, he is. Everyone in orange is. They can’t help themselves. They are the Dutch. They are the Terrell Owens of the World Cup.

Diego Maradona, coach Argentina, in an interview expressed his worries about the attacking talent of the Mexicans and said that it is impossible to know what team they will play. England vs Algeria Match Preview

Both teams will see this match as a must win when Algeria square up against England in a Group C encounter in Cape Town on Friday.

Algeria have never made it past the group stage in their two previous World Cup appearances in 1982 and 1986, although they did cause quite a stir when they upset the West Germans in 1982.
That particular result led to controversy as the West Germans and Austrians later contrived a 1-0 West German victory that served to pass both of those European countries through to the knockout phase at the expense of the Algerians.
But that’s their history and this is 2010.
Algeria lost 1-0 to Slovenia in their first match in this World Cup and sit last in Group C. Now they need a win over England to guarantee a chance of survival.
After seeing how the Three Lions squad failed to dispatch the USA, Algerian defender Nadir Belhadj for one thinks his team can do it.

Algerians see problems in England’s defense

"We have seen some gaps, especially in their defense,” said Belhadj, “and, if we can take advantage of those gaps…maybe it could make the difference and we could create history by qualifying from the group stages.”
The English are not immune to being upset by a lesser football power. Their 1-0 loss to USA in Brazil in the 1950 World Cup is the most commonly cited example. Last weekend’s 1-1 draw with the USA only serves to show that the modern England squad is vulnerable too.
Robert Green’s unfortunate blunder gifted the USA a goal and a share of the points, but despite largely dominating play against the Americans the English seldom looked truly dominant.
With the loss of Rio Ferdinand and with Ledley King doubtful, Belhadj’s observation isn’t far off the mark. The English do indeed seem vulnerable at the back.
Ferdinand’s knee injury, suffered in a training ground encounter, ruled him out of the tournament before it started, and motivated England boss Fabio Capello to call up Michael Dawson of Tottenham to replace the Manchester United man.
Talented but fragile defender Ledley King suffered a groin strain in the match against the USA and is said to be doubtful for the Algeria match. If King is unable to start Capello will have to make a decision on whom to play at the back. Dawson joins two other players in the frame for central defense: Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher and West Ham’s Matthew Upson.
The English at least can be comforted knowing that Gareth Barry is once again fit and is set to start against Algeria, having recovered from an ankle injury suffered while playing for his club, Manchester City, last month.
But the starting goalkeeper is another area of decision for Capello. Will he go with Green again, despite his calamitous error against the USA?

Is the Jabulani a factor?

For his part, Green admitted the mistake was all his and nothing to do with the apparently unpredictable qualities of the much maligned Jabulani ball.
"You prepare mentally for making those mistakes - that's what you do the preparation for before a game. You don't let it affect you. I'm not blaming the ball, I should have stopped it and there's no two ways about it” said the West Ham ‘keeper.
Capello put things in perspective. “He made one mistake, a big mistake, but in the second half he also made one great save,” the manager said. “He saved that really, really well.” We’ll probably not know until Friday whether Green will get another chance.
Yet the Algerians come into the match with England having suffered a similar fate. The goal that gave their Slovenian opponents the vital three points last weekend also came as a result of a goalkeeping error.
Algerian keeper Chaouchi should have dealt with Koran’s shot easily. Instead he allowed the shot to bounce off his arm and into the goal. The Jabulani factor?

Both teams need a win

A loss to England means an early trip home for the Algerians. A win, albeit unlikely, is probably the only chance they have of survival, and Belhadj and company will undoubtedly approach the match with the attitude that nothing is impossible.
England’s defensive worries are certainly troublesome, but they’d be offset some if striker Wayne Rooney were to get himself on the score sheet. Rooney hasn’t scored for his country in six matches, and although others among the English are capable of bulging the onion bag, the sight of Rooney doing for England what he did so well for Manchester United this season would undoubtedly warm the cockles of English hearts as they prepare to face the big boys in the knockout stages. But first they have to avoid being upset by Algeria.

What's at stake

Argentina defeated Nigeria 1-0 in its opening game, while South Korea posted a 2-0 victory over Greece. As a result, the Argentines and South Koreans are tied for first place in Group B with three points apiece, while winless Nigeria and Greece pick up the rear.
This is a critical game for both sides as a win would land that team in first place in Group B and put them in the driver's seat with six points and one game to go in the first round.
A tie wouldn't be disastrous for Argentina, as its last match of the group stage is against lowly Greece, who has yet to win a game in two World Cups after making their tournament debut in 1994.
South Korea, on the other hand, faces a tricky Nigeria side in its final encounter of the group stage, so anything less than a victory against Argentina would mean their chances of advancing to the second round would go down to the wire.

Suspension watch

Jonas Gutierrez earned a yellow card in Argentina's previous match. If he receives a another against South Korea, he will be suspended for Argentina's final game of the group stage. South Korea doesn`t have any players on a yellow card.

Player to watch for Argentina

Gabriel Heinze — The tough-tackling defender netted the winner for Argentina against Nigeria, scoring with a powerful header off a free kick. Heinze is coach Diego Maradona's defensive marshal, but it will be interesting to see if he ventures forward in attack after finding the net against the Nigerians.

Player to watch for South Korea

Lee Jung-Soo — Like Heinze, Lee Jung-Soo is a centre-back who scored for South Korea off a set piece against Greece. The South Korean possesses good speed, which he uses to great effect in joining the attack, and to recover to get back into position when the other team has the ball.

Key match-up

Lionel Messi vs. Park Ji-Sung — They play for two of the biggest clubs in the world (Messi for FC Barcelona, Park Ji-Sung with Manchester United), and both are talented playmakers and serve as the creative fulcrums of their national teams. Messi is the best player in the world, but Park Ji-Sung is a talented star who doesn't quite receive the recognition he deserves. A strong performance against Argentina would go a long way to change that.

A's second match will face the host against the Celestes. With two
draws nothing is yet decided in this group, and the winner will claim
the top at least for a week.

Uruguay and
South Africa will hold the second match of their group knowing that
every single point will matter to advance to the next stage. Diego
Forlan's squad had a very disappointing beginning in the competition, as
their supposedly unstoppable offense had many problems making its way
against France's packed back line. South Africa confirmed their strategy
4-2-3-1 can offer deadly counterattacks and for that reason most of the
second half they dominated the game against Mexico. Their lack of
experience against strikers of International football proved lethal
against the Mexicans: something will have to change as Luis Suarez and
Diego Forlan can prove deadly if given any space. Half a ticket for the
Knockouts will be given to the winner, will the host stop Charrua's
advance?

Oscar Tabarez's experimental lab

Something went wrong in Uruguay's Gallic
debut, as the bridge between Celeste's strikers and the creative line
was built over impassable terrain. For this matter the Maestro will
introduce many variations, as well as adding a third striker to better
assist team's marksman. Nicolas Lodeiro's unacceptable behavior against
France will keep him away from this match and probably for the rest of
the competition, for now the substitutes will be given a chance to show
what they can do to aid Uruguay's creation.

Palermo's
Edinson Cavani will take Ignacio Gonzales' place in an offensive manner.
The lack of a fourth midfielder will call for Diego Forlan to take
command over team's offensive direction, as his teams needs his wits to
start their advance, and the offensive trident will feed endlessly from
this modification. Porto's Jorge Fucile will be the second change in the
squad, occupying the left band, sidelining Mauricio Victorino to the
bench. Forlan recognized their mistakes against France "We need to
improve our collective game from what we did against France and have
more weight on our opponent's area". Unluckily, and opposing to Socrates
beliefs, lack of ignorance does not imply goodness. Their rivals are up
to date with this modifications and will probably try to overwhelm the
Celestes from the bands, to produce the same effect the Vuvuzuela have
over the crowds: to confuse and try to lower the level of awareness of
the opponents.

Both Pereyra's showed their solidity from
the bands, but the Africans have a wide physical advantage on both
speed and stamina over the American squad. Diego Lugano will have to be
omnipresent to stop Bafana Bafana's endless advance, but this is not
something he is not used to: team's captain recognizes he must be a
defensive warlord, and this does not appear to be a burden too heavy for
him to have over his shoulder. The four man back-line will be mandatory
against a team that relies heavily in the counter attack, though it
might leave many spaces in the midfield, especially with Nicolas
Lodeiro's absence.

As the Maestro declared, a victory will
be a "Giant leap forward" for the Celeste. But will they be able to
outrun The Boys at their own home?

An ambush in Africa

The local team is locked with all their
rivals of Group A with a single point, and now the end of the Group
Stage is almost here the pressure for victory is growing higher and
higher. Team's aggressive formation with a lot of pressure from the
bands can get through almost any defense. Katlego Mphela and Siphiwe
Tshabalala showed both of them can surprise from distance as well as
advance until facing opponent's goalkeeper face to face, though their
last second calls have not been particularly sharp, at least during the
first encounter.

Brazilian's coach Carlos Alberto
Parrreira will have much to think figuring out how to face the Celeste
squad. Against Mexico his defensive strategy worked wonders, though he
might lack the solidity of certain players to actually turn Bafana's
area into a fortress. Steven Pienaar will be decisive to create
offensive opportunities, as his creative role will be fundamental to
exploit the advantages of team's electric forwards. PIenaar declared he
was not at the 100%, but it was made clear during the last match that
Parreira cannot do without Everton's offensive commander. He asked his
team mates to play with the heart "No one can stop you if you play with
your heart" were his exact words.

Player's confidence is sky high, and they
know a victory this Wednesday will almost seal their pass to the next
stage. Lucas Thwala's weak performance against Mexico was one of the
reasons why the host was not able to retain the victory on the debut
match. For that matter, and to provide assistance to the back line
against Celeste's beasts, Tsepo Masilela will most likely perform within
the starting eleven. Stopping Diego Forlan will be determinant to
dominate the ball, but the task will be overly difficult. Another draw
might turn the last match of the stage into a nightmare for both teams,
so they can only go for victory. Having faced each other only once, this
six-pointer will decide the future of both squads.
