Such errors increase the risk of leakage or rupture of the condom, according to the review, published in the journal «Sexual Health».
"The use of condom is much more complex than we think and mistakes are not only rare," says researcher Dr. Richard Crosby, professor and director of the Department of Health Behaviors of College of Public Health, University of Kentucky.
If the condom is used correctly, is 98% effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy, according to the World Health Organization.Typically, however, the rates of unwanted pregnancies with condom use ranging around 15%.
Researchers led by Dr. S. Sanders of the Foundation Study of Sex, Gender and the Reproduction of Kinsey of Indiana University, analyzed all studies for the mistakes with condoms conducted since 1995.
A total of 50 studies that were conducted were in 14 countries, the majority have been in the U.S. and Britain.
The studies included various groups of volunteers from married women and prostitutes to students, leading to identify many different errors.
Before ejaculation
One of the most important as regards the protective power of condoms, their use was at the beginning of intercourse and just before ejaculation - a tactic that said the following percentage from 17% to 51.1% of volunteers, depending on study.
This approach cancels the power of the condom to protect against sexually transmitted diseases, because exchanging body fluids occurs throughout the duration of sex and not only during ejaculation.
Many were the mistakes in the placement of condoms. Up to 25.3% of respondents said they unfold the condom before putting it on the penis, rather than unravel on him.
