The sea is immense, and a whale shark does not need to surface for air. Finding one off Peru’s northern coast requires patience, local knowledge, and an understanding of where its food moves through the water. Alejandra Mendoza has spent nearly a decade building that knowledge.

Through the World Shark Project, Alejandra studies an endangered species while working with fishing communities and government agencies. Her goal is not only to collect biological data. It is to turn evidence into protection.

From sea turtles to whale sharks

Alejandra began working with the conservation organization Ecoceanica during her professional training. She first supported sea-turtle work, then joined a new whale shark project. The opportunity matched her long-standing fascination with sharks.

At the time, fear shaped many encounters. Some fishermen believed whale sharks were dangerous and tried to drive them away with fuel or oil. The research team had to replace myth with observation and trust.

Alejandra Mendoza leads research that has changed how coastal communities understand whale sharks.

How researchers find a whale shark

Field days begin with gear, coffee, and a decision about whether recent sightings point north toward Punta Mero or south toward Punta Sal. The boat moves slowly, often within a few miles of shore. Researchers watch for a dorsal fin, the tip of a tail, or a dark shape below the surface.

Whale sharks feed on zooplankton. As sunlight changes where plankton gathers in the water column, a feeding shark may come close enough to the surface to be seen. The team approaches from behind, never cutting across the animal’s path.

Gentle movement and useful photographs

Alejandra reads the shark’s speed and behavior before entering the water. She swims calmly and photographs the animal without crowding it. Measurements of the dorsal fin can help researchers estimate total length, an important technique when an animal may grow to six, seven, or even eleven meters.

Individual photographs and repeated observations create a record of who is visiting, how large the animals are, and how the population may be changing.

Research that helped change policy

The team’s early data supported work by Peru’s Ministry of Production and its marine research authorities. Whale shark fishing and the commercialization of products from the species are now prohibited. Alejandra continues working toward practical guidelines for responsible wildlife tourism.

It does not stop in collecting biological and ecological data. We also use this data to do management.
Alejandra Mendoza

Changing a community’s relationship with sharks

The project’s most visible change may be in the fishing community. People who once feared whale sharks now help report sightings, support research, and see responsible tourism as an opportunity. Children have begun imagining futures in marine science because they see researchers returning year after year.

Alejandra welcomes those conversations. When local parents ask how a child might study the ocean or find a related career, she shares her contact information and offers guidance. Conservation becomes a pathway, not only a restriction.

Why Alejandra Mendoza is an everyday hero

Alejandra connects patient fieldwork with lasting public change. She respects the animal, builds local participation, collaborates with government, and helps young people see themselves in science. Her work proves that protecting a species begins with understanding it and succeeds when a community claims the mission as its own.

Below the surface near Manta, Ecuador, abandoned fishing nets can disappear into the landscape while continuing to catch and kill marine life. Santiago Hidalgo knows how to spot them. Years of diving have trained his eyes to recognize debris that has already begun to blend into the seafloor.

Santiago has organized or joined more than 100 large cleanups over roughly a decade. His documentary shows that underwater conservation is demanding work built on preparation, teamwork, local knowledge, and the will to act.

The danger of ghost nets

Santiago identifies abandoned fishing nets, often called ghost nets, as one of the most destructive forms of marine debris in his area. A bottle is pollution, but a drifting net can keep trapping moray eels, sea turtles, fish, sharks, dolphins, and other animals long after it has been lost or cut free from a vessel.

When a part of that ocean dies, it is very unusual for the species to come back.
Santiago Hidalgo, translated and edited from the documentary

The loss spreads beyond a single animal. A damaged reef can stop supporting fish, recreation, and local livelihoods. For Santiago, removing one net protects both wildlife and the people who depend on a healthy sea.

Marine life depends on clean habitat, the focus of Santiago Hidalgo’s underwater cleanup work.

Why underwater cleanup requires a plan

A cleanup begins before anyone enters the water. Santiago checks swell, current, temperature, visibility, and the experience of the team. Divers use GPS and sonar to locate likely debris fields, mark a site with a buoy, then inspect it for hazards before trying to lift anything.

The work can be dangerous. Nets snag equipment and people. Depth limits working time. Heavy debris must be secured, lifted, and transferred to a boat without creating a second emergency. Santiago emphasizes that experience and a trusted team make the difference.

Three hundred pounds in one morning

During one cleanup featured in the film, a small group of divers removes about 300 pounds of trash. Across years of work, Santiago estimates that he and the people alongside him have pulled several tons from the ocean.

Those results come from a network. Friends, clients, dive professionals, local groups, and private businesses in Manta have all helped. Each trip also becomes a chance to build awareness among people who spend time on or near the water.

From blame to better information

Santiago’s experience changed how he understood the source of local debris. Tourists contribute to pollution, but the tools, batteries, and fishing equipment his teams recover point to a wider problem. Accurate observation helps the community focus its response where it can have the greatest effect.

Why Santiago Hidalgo is an everyday hero

Santiago turns love for diving into consistent stewardship. He studies conditions, brings people together, accepts the risk of difficult work, and removes hazards most people will never see. Just as importantly, he teaches others to treat the ocean as a shared place of work, wonder, and responsibility.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Santiago Hidalgo work?
His documentary follows underwater cleanup work around Manta, Ecuador.

What is a ghost net?
It is lost or abandoned fishing gear that can continue trapping and killing animals after it is no longer controlled by a fishing vessel.

How many cleanups has Santiago joined?
He says he has organized or participated in more than 100 large cleanups over about ten years.

Why is professional preparation important?
Currents, depth, entanglement, heavy objects, and limited visibility can make underwater debris removal dangerous.

Watch the documentary in the player above, then share Santiago’s story with someone who believes every visit to nature should leave it better.

On the beaches of Máncora, Peru, every stranded turtle carries information that could help protect the next one. Marine biologist Carmen González walks the coast, records what she finds, works with fishing communities, and helps people understand how their choices affect threatened marine species.

Her documentary follows a conservation practice that combines research with relationships. The measurements matter, but so do the fishermen, volunteers, hotel workers, and neighbors who learn how to respond when a turtle is caught or a nest is discovered.

A life shaped by animals and marine biology

Carmen says she has been interested in animals for as long as she can remember. That interest led her to study marine biology and eventually to conservation work on Peru’s northern coast.

Every animal is important, lives for a very specific reason, and plays several roles in the ecosystem.
Carmen González, translated in the documentary

Seven species of sea turtle live around the world, and five have been observed in Peru. Carmen explains that many turtles become entangled in fishing nets. Because they breathe air, a trapped and stressed turtle can drown before it reaches the surface.

A sea turtle on the northern Peruvian coast, where Carmen González works with communities to protect threatened marine species.

Teaching fishermen how to save a trapped turtle

Carmen’s team teaches fishing communities what to do when a turtle is caught. Training includes how to bring the animal onto the boat, check its condition, use rehabilitation techniques when needed, and decide whether it can be safely released.

That knowledge can turn an accidental capture into a rescue. It also changes conservation from something imposed from outside into a skill the community can use on the water.

What a stranded turtle can teach researchers

When Carmen documents a stranded animal, she records measurements, species, color, and whether it was found alive or dead. Together, these observations help researchers understand which species are stranding, where they are appearing, and what may have happened to them.

In the film, Carmen examines the shell of a critically endangered hawksbill turtle. She describes the find as especially valuable because hawksbills were once thought to have disappeared from that part of the Pacific.

Protecting nests through community partnerships

Carmen began this work as a volunteer in 2015. Her responsibilities grew to include supporting new volunteers and coordinating intensive research activities such as nest evaluation, hatch-rate monitoring, beach cleanups, and searches for stranded wildlife.

The community is central to the work. Local residents help report and monitor nests. Fishing boats support research trips. Workshops give fishermen and other residents a role in the same mission.

A sea turtle nest may contain roughly 60 to 180 eggs. After about 45 to 60 days, hatchlings emerge and move toward the sea. Carmen explains that young turtles may then spend 10 to 12 years in the open ocean during a period researchers sometimes call the lost years.

A connection between Peru and the Galápagos

Annual aquatic surveys have also revealed a connection between the northern coast of Peru and the Galápagos Islands. Researchers in the Galápagos have found turtles carrying tags from Carmen’s region, while Carmen’s team has encountered turtles tagged in the Galápagos. The exchange shows how widely these animals travel to feed and reproduce.

Conservation beyond the shoreline

Carmen’s environmental work extends beyond marine wildlife. With her partner, she helped create an organic-waste composting project that collects food waste, turns it into compost, and returns useful material to local people and businesses.

The compost supports gardens, community orchards, native plants, and reforestation efforts. It also keeps organic waste away from uncovered landfills where it can contribute to pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions.

Why Carmen González is an everyday hero

Carmen connects scientific knowledge to actions people can take immediately. She documents evidence, trains fishing communities, supports volunteers, protects nests, and builds trust with the people who share the coast. Her work recognizes that saving wildlife requires both data and community participation.
