In Ayangue, Ecuador, the sea is livelihood, memory, and possibility. Ambrosio Yagual grew up in this coastal community, learned artisanal diving as a child, and made his living as a fisherman. His documentary follows the turn that led him from fishing into tourism, community organizing, and the long-term care of an underwater landmark.

A life formed by the coast

Ambrosio describes traveling to other ports when local fishing conditions required it. The work connected his family to the ocean, but it also exposed them to danger. After violence entered his family’s life, he stopped returning to the same fishing routine and focused more fully on diving and tourism.

The change was practical, but it was also personal. The diving knowledge he had carried since childhood became the foundation for a different future.

Building the Christ of the Abyss

During a week of diving with a visitor, Ambrosio shared the places he knew around Ayangue. The visitor saw both the beauty of the area and the damage people had caused, then proposed placing a statue of Christ beneath the water.

Ambrosio brought the idea to community leaders. When plans arrived for a base weighing roughly four tons, he made calls, raised local support, and helped organize the work. The base was built by hand. Two boats then towed it to Islote El Pelado, where the team lowered it into place facing the port.

The operation was more than a construction project. It gave the community a visible point of connection between faith, tourism, diving, and the health of the surrounding water.

From underwater landmark to marine protection

The documentary traces what followed: another vessel was placed underwater, and the area around El Pelado was later declared a marine reserve. Mooring buoys helped keep boats from anchoring directly on the reefs. Ambrosio says tourism grew as visitors came to dive, see the statue, and experience the marine reserve.

He also describes an increase in marine life around the site, including manta rays and a whale shark sighting. Those observations are part of his lived account of how the area changed over time.

Stewardship means returning

Creating the statue was only the beginning. Ambrosio, his children, and friends have repeatedly removed, repaired, repainted, and returned it after damage. That ongoing maintenance is a quieter form of heroism: showing up after the attention has moved elsewhere.

On the beach at Ligüiqui, Ecuador, a lesson in breathing becomes a lesson in belonging. Marine biologist and freediving instructor Sebastián Hernández is helping children build confidence in the water while reconnecting with the knowledge, safety, and marine heritage of their community.

From marine biology to freediving instruction

Sebastián was born in Punta Arenas, Chile, and grew up in Santiago before studying marine biology in Coquimbo. His academic path later took him to Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, and his work brought him to Manta, Ecuador. Alongside that scientific training, he developed his freediving practice and became an instructor.

For Sebastián, freediving is not about spectacle. It is a practical way to understand the body, move safely in the ocean, and build a deeper relationship with marine life.

Teaching water confidence in Ligüiqui

Ligüiqui is a rural coastal community with deep ties to the sea and the history of the Manteño-Huancavilca people. Many local families fish, and knowledge of breath-hold diving has passed from one generation to the next. Sebastián’s workshops bring formal technique to that lived knowledge.

The children begin on land with breathing exercises and yoga. They learn how masks, snorkels, and fins work. Only then do they enter shallow water, where they practice calmly and gradually. The goal is not to push limits; it is to replace fear and uncertainty with preparation, awareness, and respect for the ocean.

Preserving knowledge and making it safer

The documentary connects the workshop to the community’s ancestral relationship with the coast. Sebastián explains that technical training can help reduce the ear injuries and other problems experienced by some breath-hold fishers. Good technique gives young people tools to continue a tradition in a healthier, more sustainable way.

The children describe what the experience gives them: new skills, greater independence, time with friends, and a chance to discover marine animals they had not known before. Their voices make the impact clear. This is education that feels immediately useful.

Vamos al Agua

Sebastián and his partner created the freediving school Vamos al Agua during the pandemic, when they were challenged to build from what they knew best. For Sebastián “Zuko” Carrasco, that moment came one week after the birth of his second daughter. A single miscommunication during a rope course training exercise caused him to fall directly to the ground, leaving him with a severe spinal cord injury at the C5 and C6 vertebrae.

Raised just outside Quito, Ecuador, Zuko grew up surrounded by exploration and adventure. His family traveled constantly through Ecuador and South America, creating a deep connection to the outdoors from an early age.

That connection shaped the direction of his life.

After spending time in the United States following high school, he realized he wanted to dedicate himself fully to the mountains. Climbing became more than passion. It became profession, purpose, and identity.

For more than twenty years, climbing defined his life and his closest relationships.

Then everything changed.

Beyond The Fall and the Power of Teamwork

After the accident, doctors warned that recovery would be limited. At first, Zuko believed determination alone could return his life to what it once was. That hope pushed him through rehabilitation, training, and months of exhausting recovery.

But eventually he faced a painful truth.
