How Melissa Paris became a World Superbike racer

Hailing from Northern California, Melissa’s initial thrill came from chasing her brothers on a BMX bike. However, her true passion for motorcycles ignited during her college years.

Captivated by the rush of flat track racing, she struck a deal to repair damaged bikes in exchange for riding time—an arrangement that kept her glued to the track.

Pursuing her racing dreams meant juggling a packed schedule. She dedicated most of her free time to mastering her skills on 125 and 250cc bikes, which wasn’t cheap.

Balancing full-time studies with a job, she funded her near-weekly competition entries. Her hard work paid off when she shot to prominence as the 2008 Lightweight National Champion.

Beginning her professional career in 2009 with a debut at Daytona on a Yamaha R6, Melissa secured a 21st-place finish. That same year, she broke barriers as the first woman to qualify for a World Supersport Race.

In 2010, she participated in the AMA Daytona Sportbike series, earning a respectable 15th place.

The following year saw her compete in the British Supersport at Brands Hatch, and she became the first female rider to test a Yamaha MotoGP prototype, which she described as “the coolest motorcycle you could possibly ride.”

Melissa’s career spanned multiple prestigious events in the U.S., including AMA Pro Flat Track and MotoAmerica Supersport races.

Globally, she seized a fourth-place finish in Spain’s 2014 FIM CEV Repsol International Roadrace Championship and became part of the inaugural all-female team to qualify and complete the 2016 Bol d’Or 24 Hour World Endurance Championship Race.

In 2017, Melissa joined the first all-female team to qualify and finish the LeMans 24 Hour World Endurance Championship Race, coinciding with the founding of MP13 Racing.

Launching a racing team

Her racing adventures revealed a crucial insight—top racers are supported by many helping hands.

Inspired by this, she launched MP13 Racing to offer a nurturing environment for young girls entering the racing world.

Yet, she lamented, “There just unfortunately aren’t enough of them,” highlighting her mission to change that.

Recently, Melissa joined Royal Enfield’s Build. Train. Race. Program, mentoring women with little to no racing experience.

Here, she guided them through building race bikes, training them for the track, and ultimately letting them loose to race, emphasizing her belief in a shared space for men and women in motorcycle racing.

First Female World Supersport Racer with Melissa Paris

Melissa Paris is a former professional motorcycle road racer, who was the first female to qualify and compete in a World Supersport race. She has dedicated her post-racing career to helping young athletes, specifically women, come up in a sport that requires the support of a team to achieve success.

How World Supersport hero Melissa Paris got her start in road bike racing

As a child growing up in Northern California, Melissa Paris pedaled after her older brothers on a BMX bike, but it wasn’t until going away to college that she found her love for motorcycles.

While attending San Diego State University in Southern California, Paris met a “cute guy” in the dorms who had a sport bike. They began dating and she learned how to ride a motorcycle.

“There’s no way of describing it,” Paris said in an interview last year. “It’s like in The Wizard of Oz, when all of a sudden everything turns to color.”

Her fling with the boy in college was brief, but motorcycles quickly became her true love, and she saved up to buy a bike of her own.

Soon she was ditching classes to fly down freeways and cruise through California canyons. Eventually, the group of older guys she frequently rode with thought she had enough talent to take to a motorcycle race track.

Paris was instantly addicted to the adrenaline of the opening up the throttle on a flat track, and made a deal with the owners to fix crashed bikes in exchange for riding for free.

After spending all her free time honing her skills on the track, Paris soon began club racing on 125 and 250cc bikes, which also cost a pretty penny. Despite being a full-time student, she picked up a full-time job to fund her entry into competitions nearly every weekend.

“All I wanted to do was be at the track every opportunity I had. And I knew from the first time the flag dropped [that I] don’t want to do anything else,” Paris told Jalopnik.

Melissa Paris becomes the first woman to compete in the a World Supersport race

Her racing career took off as fast as a superbike, when she became the Lightweight National Champion in 2008.

“I don’t think I ever looked at it as a big grand goal, I just want to keep doing this. I don’t want to do anything else,” she told YEDH. “There’s nothing out there that makes me feel this way.”

In 2009, she began racing professionally, making her debut in Daytona on a Yamaha R6 and finishing 21st. The same year, she became the first woman to qualify for and race in for a World Supersport race.

“It was so cool and so scary,” she remarked. “Talk about imposter syndrome and thinking you don’t belong there, and questioning yourself quite a bit. But I was the top qualifying wild card.”

Paris competed in the 2010 American Motorcycle Association (AMA) Daytona Sportbike series and finished 15th.

The next year, she competed in the British Supersport at Brands Hatch, and went on to become the first female rider ever invited to test a Yamaha MotoGP prototype bike, which she called “the coolest motorcycle you could possibly ride.”

Test driving supersport motorcycles

Her husband, fellow professional rider Josh Hayes, had won the 2011 AMA Pro Superbike Championship on a Yamaha, and the manufacturer invited him to test drive the motorcycle in Spain.

When another rider was involved in a tragic crash at the 2011 Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix, Hayes was tapped to compete for the Tech 3 Yamaha MotoGP in Spain that week, and Paris was asked to test out the prototype bike.

She was worried that people would think that she was riding like a girl and “wouldn’t open the gas,” so Paris decided not to give them “that opportunity,” and “held the thing full stick” while she clicked through the gears.

She called the experience, “terrifying but amazing,” and said she wasn’t sure why they let her do that, but is “glad that they did.”

For the next several years, Paris would compete in the United States at AMA Pro Flat Track and MotoAmerica Supersport races.

She would also travel the world to finish fourth in Spain’s 2014 FIM CEV Repsol International Roadrace Championship, and become part of the first all-female team to qualify and complete the 2016 Bol d’Or 24 Hour World Endurance Championship Race.

In 2017, she was a member of the first all-female team to qualify and complete the LeMans 24 Hour World Endurance Championship Race, which was the same year she would create MP13 Racing.

Melissa Paris launches a road bike racing team after breaking barriers in World Supersport

The further along Paris went in racing, the more she realized that the top racers had plenty of people to help get them there along the way.

After her own successes, she wanted to pay forward everything that had been done for her to the next generation of riders, which was why Paris started MP13 Racing.

“I wanted to help young kids, in a lot of cases other girls, and help create those opportunities to help move them along and go racing at the highest level they could,” she said about her inspiration to start the team.

She originally started MP13 to have a safe space for young girls to come up in racing, but there “just unfortunately aren’t enough of them” in the sport in her opinion.

Paris recently was part of Royal Enfield’s Build. Train. Race. Program, where they took a group of girls and women who had little to no experience riding on a racetrack.

Through the program she was able to help mentor them while they built race bikes, train the women to race on the track, and set them loose to race.

“For me that was really cool, because I was racing for a really long time before I ever spun a wrench on the bike,” Paris explained. “I think a lot of people probably thought I relished the race track side of teaching them more, but I really enjoyed the build of the bike a lot.”

She believes a lot of girls and women are not confident when it comes to the mechanical side of racing motorcycles.

“I love the opportunity to show them that it’s not rocket science and that you can figure it out, and that if you can’t there’s someone out there who wants to help you and will be happy to help you,” she added.

Why World Supersport road racing star Melissa Paris is a hero

Paris believes that there’s room for both men and women in professional motorcycle racing and has made it her mission to make sure everybody feels welcome.

“I want to make sure that everyone knows that there’s space at the table for them, and if I can pull out the chair, I’m happy to do that,” she stated.

“I want to help people because I was helped, and I think that’s what you’re supposed to do,” the former pro road racer continued.

She thinks that if people follow their dreams, they’re “probably not going to go wrong.”

“Stop thinking of all the reasons you can’t do something and just take that jump and try it,” Paris insisted.

While she encourages anyone to follow their dreams, they won’t get anywhere unless they’re willing to put the time an effort into succeeding.

“Work ethic is something that means more to me than anything in the world,” Paris shared. “Are you willing to stay up all night and do what it takes?”

Working on supersport motorcycles

When she gets a motorcycle ready to go on the track, she insists that that it be the ‘best” and “safest” bike it can be.

“That’s something that’s really important to me, that I pride myself on,” she commented. “I’m never worried that someone’s going to call me lazy.”

She had parents that modeled that behavior during her childhood, and unlike her, their careers were not their dream jobs, or even anything they were particularly passionate about. Her mother drove bread truck and her father fixed boilers.

“When I find myself with an opportunity to work in something I love and I enjoy, [working hard] is like a no-brainer,” the former racer detailed.

“If you think you did enough, then you didn’t,” she added. “I’ve never walked away from a bike and said ‘that thing’s perfect.’”

Every time that Melissa Paris looks at a bike that has just been completed, she only sees what she could have done better and what to improve on the next time.

Protecting Tambor Bay’s Turtles with Tracey Lemon

Tracey Lemon has dedicated the later half of her life to the conservation of endangered species, specifically sea turtles. 

She volunteers with Tambor Bay Turtles, a Costa Rican non-profit organization with two primary objectives: to “protect the remaining sea turtles and grow the population.” 

Through her work with TBT, Tracey has contributed to a drastic increase in the survival rate of Costa Rican sea turtles, a “keystone species” essential for the functioning of our ecosystem. 

Informed by her wide breadth of experiences, she has come to the conclusion that an accomplished life is one that is in service to nature.

Tracey Lemon Develops an Early Fascination With Marine Life

Unlike many other conservationists, Tracey did not study biology at an academic level. 

Her passion for the environment can be traced back to her childhood, when she and her father would walk side by side through the vast Virginia farmlands. 

While she and her family were frequent movers, their VA farm was what she considered home.

However, it was the beaches of North Carolina that instilled within her a love for marine life. 

Before she ever considered dedicating her life to the preservation of sea turtles, she would observe their behaviors, watching in awe as they would glide through the ocean. 

She didn’t know at the time that these experiences would become the basis for her proudest achievements in life. 

College and Beyond: The Many Lives of Tracey Lemon

During her first foray into higher education, Tracey was studying agricultural science, hoping to one day become an extension agent. 

According to AgCareers, an extension agent is “employed by land-grant universities to serve the citizens of their particular state by acting as an expert or teacher on a topic relating to economics, community development, agriculture, family, animal production, diet, and nutrition.” 

However, when she considered the low average wages of extension agents, she opted instead to join the army.

Aside from being an eye-opening experience, Tracey’s time in the army was of great financial benefit, as, through the G.I. Bill, she had her first car, first house, and college tuition paid for. 

While stationed in Denver, Colorado, she studied optometry and eventually segwayed into a civilian job as an optometrist in Florida. 

When her employer’s main investor bailed out, she took up real estate; her success in this field allowed her to retire early and move to Costa Rica with her husband. 

Here, she finally had the freedom to pursue her true passion: conservation.

What Makes Tracey Lemon an Everyday Hero?

Tracey is strictly a volunteer, though the hours she puts into TBT rival those required by a full-time job. 

While she could easily spend her time in retirement indulging in life’s pleasures, she has chosen to dedicate herself to a cause that benefits mankind as a whole. 

But just how heroic are her conservation efforts? Well, her work to increase the survival rates of sea turtles is not only beneficial to the turtles themselves, it is beneficial to us.

Aside from being fascinating creatures to look at, sea turtles are what Tracey describes as a “keystone species,” meaning that their presence is critical to the functioning of the ecosystem: 

“Turtles are cleaners of the ocean, cleaners of the coral reefs,” Tracey said. “Losing coral reefs would equal a loss of oxygen. If we lost sea turtles, it would be detrimental to humans.”

How Has Tracey Lemon’s Work Impacted Her Community?

Tracey’s roles within TBT include the actual guarding of turtle nests from poachers and other wildlife, as well as the education of the community’s children. 

The latter role has proven to be vital in ending the barbaric practice of poaching. Once considered a common practice in Costa Rica, poaching is, because of work by Tracey and other conservationists, slowly becoming more stigmatized.

But why are turtle eggs poached? Many years ago, they were thought to be a source of protein. But with more environmentally friendly protein sources becoming widely available, they are now poached for their supposed aphrodisiacal effects, though according to Scientific American, “There is no evidence to suggest that turtle eggs act as aphrodisiacs, and it’s unclear how that belief originated.” 

Despite this—as well as the fact that poaching is illegal in the country—the consumption of a turtle egg is unfortunately for some still a tradition whilst visiting Costa Rica, much akin to the smoking of a Cuban cigar when visiting Cuba.

To combat poaching, Tracey and her co-volunteers speak at local elementary schools, sharing with future generations the detrimental effects of the practice. And the education seems to be working: 

“When the organization started, nearly half the nests were being poached,” Tracey said. “This year, we only had two poached nests.”

Because of this, Tracey feels optimistic about the future of the environmental protection movement in Costa Rica.

Tracey Lemon on the Struggles of Maintaining a Non-Profit Organization

Despite having overwhelming support from the local community, the biggest struggle that Tambor Bay Turtles faces is garnering funding. 

In Tracey’s own words, the organization must often “beg” for money, as they do not (yet) have a corporate sponsor backing them. 

However, TBT does have other avenues of accumulating at least enough finances to continue to operate.

Firstly, its international volunteer program comes with a fee that covers lodging and food for volunteers: but a small portion of this fee goes towards the maintenance of the org. 

TBT hosts an annual community art auction fundraiser, which, in addition to raising money, also spotlights the work of local artists. 

They also sell “adopt-a-nests” to schools: these give children the opportunity to witness the lifecycle of a sea turtle first-hand.

Tracey Lemon on Heroism

Having lived many lives in her short time on Earth, Tracey has come to the following conclusion regarding heroism: “A hero is someone you can look up to and respect. And hopefully your actions can mimic theirs in the best of ways,” she said. 

“What I respect is someone who walks the walk, someone who finds something they truly believe in and uses it to make a positive impact on the world. We can choose to be better every single day, so when I’m looking for a hero I’m not looking for someone perfect. My heroes have scars but choose to overcome them.”

In implementing these standards for heroism into her own life, she has become a hero to members of her community, as well as her co-volunteers. 

Jorge Javier Garcia Cruz, the volunteers coordinator at TBT, said of Tracey: “Oh, she’s one of our heroes… She’s been a trooper, working hard for this project. She gives her life to what she’s passionate about, and it usually involves other people and creatures of this world.”

Most retire early to spend the remainder of their lives basking in relaxation; Tracey Lemon, on the other hand, has used her time out of work to pursue her passion. 

And this passion is not mere self-fulfillment. Her love for the turtles is indicative of her greater love for humankind. 

Through her work at TBT, she has contributed to a dramatic increase in the survival rate of Costa Rican sea turtles. And the lessons she has instilled within future generations will live on through their own conservationist efforts. 

As Tracey said, “I know I will live on only because of the impact I make.”

Alex LeVesque is the founder of the Automotive Mentoring Group (AMG), a nonprofit that works to counter gang violence in the city of Chicago, Illinois. The organization recruits gang members from across the city and teaches them the skills needed to build careers as auto mechanics, thus giving a chance at reform to those who would otherwise likely fall victim to violence in the streets.

AMG provides these services free of charge. What Alex does receive in return is the knowledge that he is saving lives, providing disenfranchised young men with an avenue to become integral parts of society.

What Inspired Alex LeVesque to Start Automotive Mentoring Group?

Alex claims that philanthropy was not something that was instilled within him growing up. Instead, it was “sort of a God-given instinct.” Being a resident of Chicago, he has seen first-hand the detrimental impact of gang violence. According to NBC Chicago, 2021 alone saw 3,561 shooting incidents and 797 homicides in the city. The majority of these homicides were the results of “conflicts between rival gangs.”

“I’m very mad about everything I see,” Alex remarked. “I’m mad about these Black and Brown boys killing each other over shoelaces. I’m mad about these drive-by shootings… I want to be that alternative.”

What Makes Alex LeVesque an Everyday Hero?

With nearly three decades of experience in the automotive industry, Alex doesn’t need to operate AMG to make a living. But his motivation isn’t money: it’s righting the wrongs that he sees in the world. Currently, there are over 100,000 active gang members in Chicago. Where the system fails in implementing social change, everyday heroes like Alex pick up the slack. He is a beacon of hope for people who wish to escape a violent environment.

Alex LeVesque Provides Mental Health Resources, Education, and Job Opportunities

Alex does more than just teach his mentees to be mechanics. He addresses the root causes of gang violence. Crime in general has historically stemmed from inadequate access to resources. Because of this, Alex makes every effort to give his students the means to become successful. From providing food to mental health resources, he leaves no need unattended to.

“Once I started trying to teach these guys, I realized that a lot of the reason that their behavior was so erratic was that they were dealing with pent up trauma that was never addressed in their earlier lives,” Alex said. “We’ve made it possible for them to have some one-on-one time with a psychologist.”

To inspire his mentees, he takes them on field trips that expose them to what life can be like once they graduate. Each trip is typically to one of AMG’s 82 hiring partners, who are willing to give jobs to anyone who successfully completes the program. 

In addition to hiring partners, AMG has relationships with several alternative high schools, which allow mentees to earn their GEDs. Alex is a firm believer in the importance of education, as it can only make his students more hireable. About 90% of them do not have a high school diploma, which severely impacts their ability to climb the social ladder. 

Considering the harsh conditions that many AMG mentees were raised in, it makes sense that they often view success as a foreign concept. However, their time in the program opens their minds to what they can achieve.

“The only way that you can truly be successful in changing what a person does is changing the way they think,” Alex commented. “And the only way you can change what a person thinks is through exposure, exposing them to many things so that they can dream bigger.”

Alex LeVesque on the Importance of Fatherhood

According to Alex, a major contributing factor to young people joining gangs is the lack of a father figure. In fact, about 95% of his students grew up without fathers. For them, Alex tries to take on this role, leading by example so that one day they will become caring parents themselves. Some of them are already parents.

“Yes, I’m trying to make them into car builders,” he asserted. “But there’s a much bigger picture than that. I’m trying to create human beings that contribute positively to society. I am trying to build better mothers and fathers… I have 17 year-old kids in the program who have two year-old sons and daughters.”

Aside from Alex, AMG has nine other volunteer mentors. Having other role models is important for Alex, as some students may need support that he cannot give. With a variety of recruits comes a variety of personalities and needs.

What Has Alex LeVesque Accomplished Through AMG?

AMG has helped hundreds upon hundreds of young men and women find employment in the automotive industry. These mechanics may have otherwise lost their lives to gang violence. Alex is therefore not only saving lives, but he is breaking the all-too-common cycle of gang members not being able to escape the lifestyle.

One specific story that sticks out to Alex is the story of “Otis,” who by the time he entered the program, had already served two years for armed robbery. As he progressed through the program, however, he became committed to reform. Currently, he is a regional manager for O’Reilly Auto Parts.

“It was one of those moments where I looked up at the heavens, and I said, ‘Lord, I know you don’t work on the point system, but I hope that’s good for something,’” Alex stated.

Alex LeVesque on the Meaning of Heroism

When asked who he considers to be heroes, Alex said, “People like Muhammad Ali or Martin Luther King: they changed the world. They changed countries in terms of their mindset and the kinds of ideals they had just for humans in terms of how we’re supposed to get along and treat each other.”

On the definition of a hero, he commented that “A hero is someone who can give a hand to someone who has a lot less. Not to say I have a lot, but the little I do have, I want to be able to share it.”

“All of us are heroes in some way to someone,” he added. “In the world that we live in… everybody is always telling us that we should be mad. But nothing ever beats kindness. Whenever someone is unfair to me, my sarcastic way of dealing with that is being as kind as possible.”

He is no more powerful than the average human being, but he uses the experience he has to instill positive change, to break the negative cycles that, for some, have come to define his city. He does not allow one’s past mistakes to affect his perception of them, as he believes that all people have the opportunity to reform. 

He strives to be the push that his students need to better themselves. And through this work, he has helped would-be enemies make peace with one another.

“When you have these gang members from across the city that are working together in harmony, and they have no problems with each other, no gang fights, no shootings… Over time they begin to understand that there’s no difference between them,” he concluded. “So, if we can be friends here in this environment, why can’t we be friends outside of this environment?”

When Sunniya was born, her family celebrated the arrival of a son, the firstborn child they believed would carry the family name with pride. Yet from an early age, Sunniya felt disconnected from that identity. In classrooms divided by gender, she often felt trapped, studying how boys walked and spoke so she could blend in. Every movement, every word, became an act of survival.

“I thought I was in the wrong box,” she later said.

By high school, that silent struggle had become exhausting. Teachers began to notice her pain, offering small moments of understanding. But even with that kindness, the question that haunted her remained. Who am I, really?

The Moment That Changed Everything

When she entered university, Sunniya hoped for freedom. Instead, she encountered one of the most humiliating moments of her life. During an exam, a professor confronted her in front of the class, questioning her gender and identity. He pulled at her tie, leaving both a physical scar and a deeper emotional one.

That day, she left the campus in tears and locked herself in her room. For six months, she did not study, work, or speak much to anyone. “It wasn’t just pain,” she recalled. “It took all of my confidence.”

One day, her father came to her room and asked a simple question. “What do you want to do?” She said she did not know. He looked at her and replied, “You cannot stop here.”

That search led her to fashion and theater, two worlds where expression was not just allowed but celebrated.

Finding Her Voice on Stage

In her final year of fashion design, Sunniya heard about auditions for a community theater project called Ti Sre Dhun, or The Third Tune. The play was written and performed by transgender artists. Sunniya went to the audition expecting to design costumes. Instead, she was asked to perform.

When she took the stage, something inside her came alive. Her performance earned her a place in the cast, and soon she was performing across Pakistan and around the world. The production reached international audiences at universities such as Yale and Texas, as well as cultural centers in Oslo and Lahore.

For the first time, Sunniya felt seen. On stage, she introduced herself to the world as a transgender woman.

Her family was in the audience. Her mother’s response was painful. “This is not you,” she said. “This is just a character.” What should have been a triumphant moment became one filled with heartbreak. Still, Sunniya chose to keep going.

Learning to Serve Her Community

The success of Ti Sre Dhun brought new opportunities. Sunniya joined NAS Pakistan, the country’s first community-based organization focused on transgender rights. There she learned management, leadership, and how to advocate for others.

“NAS gave me wings,” she said. “They helped me find myself.”

Her role allowed her to serve at the grassroots level, working directly with marginalized people. For the first time, she could see how compassion and structure could bring change. She also discovered her fascination with skincare and makeup, realizing that self-care could be both healing and empowering.

When the project funding ended in 2018, Sunniya was once again left without work. Many organizations closed, leaving community members without income. She began applying for jobs, but doors kept closing. Employers saw her education and experience yet refused to hire her once they learned about her gender identity.

When Doors Closed, She Built Her Own

With few options left, Sunniya turned to performing at weddings as a dancer, the only profession many transgender women in Pakistan are allowed to pursue. “Being a dancing girl is not easy,” she said. “But I refused to become something I wasn’t.”

Then the pandemic arrived. Events stopped, and income vanished overnight. But that silence gave her time to think.

One day, a friend visiting from another city asked Sunniya to recommend a clinic for laser hair removal. She booked an appointment for her friend, but when they arrived, the doctor told them, “This clinic is for normal people.”

Those words stayed with her. That one sentence became her mission.

The Birth of Inclusive

Sunniya decided to create the kind of clinic that should have existed all along — a place where everyone, regardless of gender, could receive safe, professional, and respectful care.

She began saving money and writing proposals. She gathered a small team and enrolled in formal esthetician training. Her dedication paid off. She earned her professional certification, becoming Pakistan’s first transgender woman esthetician.

On January sixth, 2023, she opened her clinic, which she named Inclusive. The name reflected her purpose. Every person, regardless of background or identity, is welcome. Her clinic offers certified skincare treatments, laser procedures, and professional beauty services — but more importantly, it offers dignity.
