Munchy’s expands its crackers portfolio with the introduction of two new flavours, Cheese and Chocolate, unveiled at a launch event held at Mydin Subang Jaya. The launch reflects the evolving expectations of Malaysian consumers, where both flavour depth and texture now shape everyday snacking experiences.

Crackers have long held a place in Malaysian homes as a familiar, easy snack. Today, however, expectations have grown. Consumers are seeking more than just something light to nibble on. Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo is a concept electric hypercar sculpted by the wind. Its teardrop-shaped cockpit is embedded within a body sculpted with cutouts and airducts, forming aerodynamic channels throughout the vehicle. The signature halo-shaped taillight serves as both a visual icon and a massive air outlet. Together with innovations like the Active Wake Control System and Accretion Rims, the car achieves a drag coefficient of 0.29, downforce of -1.2, and an aerodynamic efficiency rating of 4.1 through iterative simulated testing, reaching new heights in balancing low drag and high downforce for electric hypercars.

"Electric hypercars must answer a fundamental question," said Li. "Do we pursue extreme low drag for straight-line speed, or maximum downforce to conquer corners? This approach impressed Yamauchi: "When I saw that Xiaomi had resolved the contradiction between low drag and high downforce, I was truly amazed."

Inside, Xiaomi introduces the "Sofa Racer" concept. The dashboard, door panels, and seats flow together as one cohesive loop, a cocoon-like cabin that gently envelops the driver. Equipped with intelligent features including Xiaomi Pulse, which interacts with the driver through light and sound, the space creates an experience best described as racing on a sofa. True to the Xiaomi family, it is fully integrated into the "Human x Car x Home" smart ecosystem. Sensing the driver's state and adapting to their mood, it transforms the car from a mere tool into an intuitive companion.

Following its nine accolades at the Halal in Travel Awards 2025, Hong Kong is entering a new phase through an expanded ecosystem of halal- and Muslim-friendly-certified infrastructure, as well as creative cultural engagement. The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is elevating its outreach to Muslim travellers through refreshing, community-driven initiatives, including the first-ever Raya music video filmed in Hong Kong in collaboration with Malaysian singers Ernie Zakri and Syamel Aqmal.

The creative collaboration sits alongside continued growth in Hong Kong’s Muslim-friendly ecosystem. At the Halal in Travel Awards 2025, the city received nine major accolades:

Building on this recognition, Hong Kong has continued expanding its Muslim-friendly offerings. The city now features 195 halal-certified, Muslim-owned and Muslim-friendly restaurants, spanning local favourites, international cuisine and Michelin-recognised establishments. In addition, 59 hotels are now Crescent Rated^{^[1]}. These properties provide Muslim-friendly amenities such as prayer mats, Qibla direction indicators and halal meal options upon request, with selected hotels offering dedicated prayer spaces.

In 2025, Hong Kong welcomed over 49.9 million visitors, marking a 12% year-on-year increase. Malaysia remains a key Southeast Asian market, with arrivals growing 6% year-on-year, reflecting sustained interest and connectivity between both destinations.

Ms Liew Chian Jia, Regional Director of Southeast Asia, Hong Kong Tourism Board, said: “Today’s Muslim travellers are digitally savvy and value both experience and reassurance. For us, Muslim-friendly travel is a long-term commitment to inclusivity. “Suasana Raya” Music Video Collaboration with Ernie Zakri and Syamel Aqmal

In conjunction with Raya, HKTB introduced a culturally resonant collaboration with award-winning duet couple Ernie Zakri and Syamel Aqmal through “Suasana Raya”, the couple’s first Raya music video ever filmed abroad. Filmed at iconic locations including Temple Street, Avenue of Stars, Ocean Park Hong Kong and Ngong Ping 360, the music video integrates Hong Kong’s cityscape into a heartfelt family narrative. The collaboration weaves in real travel experiences from accessible halal dining to comfortable prayer spaces, allowing viewers to see how Muslim-friendly travel in Hong Kong fits naturally into everyday moments.

Sharing her experience, Ernie Zakri said: “We chose Hong Kong for our Raya music video because it felt like a natural fit as it is a city full of energy, culture and diversity. It was actually our first time filming in Hong Kong, and having my husband and our daughter there with me made it even more meaningful. I was pleasantly surprised at how seamless travelling was in Hong Kong. Finding halal food was easy, and being able to settle down for our prayers comfortably in the city made the experience feel grounding and inclusive, even though we were away from home.”

Syamel Aqmal said: "Filming the ‘Suasana Raya’ music video in Hong Kong was truly an eye-opening experience for my family and me. Honestly, when people think of Hong Kong, they usually think of bustling neon streets and skyscrapers—but we discovered a side that is incredibly welcoming for Muslim travelers. Sharing this journey with Ernie and Khawla made it even more special. As a father and a husband, my first priority is always the comfort and convenience of my family, especially regarding food and prayer facilities. I was genuinely impressed by how accessible Halal food has become there—from authentic Dim Sum to local favorites, we never felt like we were missing out on the culinary adventure. This project wasn't just about work; it was about creating memories. We hope that through this music video, our fans can see that Hong Kong is a fantastic destination for Muslim families to explore, even during the festive season. It’s a place where tradition meets the future, and we can’t wait to go back.”

Sun Life Malaysia, a life insurance and takaful company, today announced the return of its Baju Raya Lama Baharu campaign, a community-driven initiative that gives pre-loved festive attire a second life while bringing brighter Raya moments to 300 beneficiaries, specifically targeting residents of elderly care centres, children's homes, and single mothers.

Building on last year’s strong response with over 2,000kg of pre-loved garments collected and later refreshed for 100 children, this year’s campaign expands beyond the Klang Valley to Penang and Johor. The campaign also welcomes FedEx as a new logistics partner, alongside returning partners AEON BiG and KLOTH Cares. AEON BiG provides drop-off points, while KLOTH Cares manages the sorting of donated items.

Ascott signs record 19,000 units across 102 properties in 2025

Advances multi-typology brand expansion into more than 10 new cities in Asia Pacific and Europe, including lyf in Wellington and Ascott in Taipei

Ascott marked its entry into Taipei with the signing of the 185-room Ascott Nangang Taipei, located in a prime mixed-use development within Nangang Software Park, one of the city’s premier business districts. The partnership agreement was signed by Ms Jocelyn Wang, Chairman, The GAIA Hotel and Mr Kevin Goh, Chief Executive Officer, The Ascott Limited and Lodging, CapitaLand Investment.

The Ascott Limited (Ascott), the wholly owned lodging business unit of CapitaLand Investment (CLI), signed a record 19,000 units across 102 properties in 2025, marking 27% year-on-year growth in new signings. Its asset-light expansion was led by higher-fee segments such as resorts, supported by accelerating franchise momentum and strong conversion activity. Ascott entered more than 10 new cities across Asia Pacific and Europe, growing its global footprint to over 230 cities in more than 40 countries. The company now operates and has under development more than 1,000 properties^{^[1]} with over 176,000 units globally.

In 2025, Ascott expanded its branded residences portfolio by partnering with quality developers on two new properties, adding over 1,000 units. These include the 227-unit Residences at Ascott Abov Patong Phuket (pictured), adjacent to Ascott Abov Patong Phuket Resort and just 150 metres from the iconic Patong Beach.

Strategic City Expansion

In 2025, Ascott entered more than 10 new cities in Asia Pacific and Europe, including notable first properties in Wellington and Taipei, resort destinations such as Phuket, Phu Quoc and Langkawi, as well as emerging Tier-2 cities like Lucknow and Thanjavur in India.

Key milestones included the company’s expansion into New Zealand beyond its Quest franchise, with lyf making its debut in Wellington. Construction is expected to commence by the end of 2026, with the 108-room property set to transform six floors of a commercial building in the CBD, incorporating lyf’s signature social spaces and interconnected rooms for group travellers. With its strategic location in the heart of the capital’s business hub, the property embodies lyf’s experience-led social living philosophy, providing an accessible base for travellers, professionals and long-stay guests to connect with Wellington’s vibrant urban energy.

Ascott also entered Taipei, launching its flagship brand with the 185-room Ascott Nangang Taipei in Nangang Software Park, one of the city’s premier business districts. Scheduled to open in 1Q 2027, the serviced residence is part of a prime mixed-use development that also houses Taiwan Fertilizer Co., Ltd.’s headquarters and multinational companies including HP, Yahoo, Philips and Intel. It is further supported by a vibrant MICE and tourism ecosystem, with direct footbridge access to the Nangang Exhibition Centre, Taipei Nangang Exhibition Centre metro station and LaLaport shopping mall. The Nangang High Speed Rail station is also within walking distance. Designed for both short and extended stays, the property builds on Ascott’s expertise in transit oriented, mixed-use developments and supports its continued growth in the market.

Resort Portfolio Expansion

Capitalising on strong leisure travel demand, Ascott’s multi-typology brand strategy drove 15 resort signings in prime locations such as Phuket, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang and Bali, expanding its portfolio in resort destinations to over 50 properties. Notable additions include the 693-unit HARRIS Resort Cam Ranh, marking the brand’s first entry into Vietnam, alongside a 250-unit lyf and a 120-unit Somerset at Lagoon City Seville, Spain, a mixed-use development anchored by an 18,000-square-metre man-made lagoon.

Ascott will debut the HARRIS brand in Vietnam with the 693-unit HARRIS Resort Cam Ranh. Designed as an all-in-one resort destination, it will feature specialty dining, a beach club, water park and recreational facilities, as well as meeting venues. Slated to open this year, HARRIS Resort Cam Ranh marks the brand’s continued expansion beyond Indonesia into high-potential Southeast Asian markets.

The company also expanded its branded residences portfolio by partnering with quality developers on two new properties, adding over 1,000 units: Residences at Ascott Abov Patong Phuket, next to Ascott Abov Patong Phuket Resort, and Oakwood Premier Branded Residences Luohu Shenzhen, co-located with Oakwood Premier Luohu Shenzhen. Leveraging its hospitality expertise and brand recognition, Ascott is well-placed to deliver lifestyle-oriented residences that meet growing demand in Asia Pacific while generating fee growth. Ascott’s second branded residence project in 2025, Oakwood Premier Branded Residences Luohu Shenzhen, will feature 792 residential units in the vibrant Luohu district, sharing the same building as the 450-unit Oakwood Premier Luohu Shenzhen.

Franchise Growth Momentum

More than a quarter of the units signed in 2025 were under franchise agreements, supporting Ascott’s asset-light expansion. Franchise momentum in East Asia accelerated as the company strengthened its regional pipeline. Five Quest properties were secured in China through Ascott’s joint venture with Jin Jiang, alongside four franchise agreements to expand Citadines’ presence in the country. The largest franchise signing of the year was the 510-key Oakwood in Gangneung, South Korea, a resort-led development in Gangneung’s Cultural Olympic Special Zone with strong connectivity to Seoul, demonstrating Oakwood’s scalability in leisure and extended-stay markets.

In other regions, Ascott’s Quest franchise contributed five new signings in Australia, while franchise agreements for the Oakwood, Somerset and The Unlimited Collection brands in Europe and Africa further strengthened the company’s global footprint.

Conversions-led Growth

In 2025, Malaysia Airports recorded 104.5 million passenger movements across its local network, translating into strong retail performance. Total sales transactions numbered about 44 million, a 28.8% year on year increase.

This performance was supported by a continued focus on strengthening the presence of Malaysian brands to deliver a sense of Malaysia, such as Oriental Kopi, Kapten Batik, Serai, Jibby Chow and Little Malaysia. Food and beverage sales grew by 19% year on year, while the gifts and souvenirs category recorded 42% growth,

Throughout the year, Tune Protect focused on initiatives addressing on climate resilience, food security, financial literacy and community wellbeing. One of the key highlights of the year was Tune Protect’s collaboration with Harian Metro under the Titipan Kasih Syawal Harian Metro programme, held on 16 April 2025 at Pantai Bumi Hijau, Kampung Banting, Sabak Bernam, Selangor. The initiative brought together a total of 84 volunteers from Tune Protect and 20 volunteers from Harian Metro, alongside local leaders, authorities and residents, to address environmental challenges faced by the coastal community.

Tune Protect volunteers drove environmental restoration by planting 500 mangrove saplings for coastal resilience and decarbonisation, alongside 70 fruit trees to enhance local food security. The initiative included a beach clean-up and a 'Kotak Rezeki' distribution to 30 underprivileged families, culminating in a festive gathering. The programme delivered both immediate community support and long-term environmental benefits by strengthening coastal resilience while building a stronger sense of environmental stewardship among volunteers and residents.

Food security and sustainable urban living were strengthened through Tune Protect’s partnership with Sunway XFarms under the Grow and Give initiative. As part of the programme, Tune Protect volunteers installed four solar-powered hydroponic units at Medan Jaya Apartments in Petaling Jaya, supporting community-led urban farming and long-term food resilience. Since May 2025, the initiative has completed eight growing cycles, producing 22.4 kilograms of fresh, pesticide-free vegetables for the Medan Jaya community, with an average yield of 2.8 kilograms per cycle.

Beyond improving access to nutritious produce, the initiative fostered hands-on learning and shared ownership of sustainable food practices among residents. With all four hydroponic units now fully deployed, the project is expected to produce up to 134 kilograms of fresh vegetables and more than 2,600 plants by May 2026, significantly enhancing food accessibility while strengthening community resilience.

The programme was carried out across four sessions in May, July, September and November 2025, mobilising 179 Tune Protect volunteers who contributed over 1,000 volunteer hours. Volunteers participated in training sessions at Sunway XFarms on sustainable agriculture and hydroponic farming methods, alongside hands-on activities such as harvesting, quality checks, packing produce, and transplanting seedlings. These efforts resulted in the distribution of 234 vegetable bags to Medan Jaya residents, together with 234 packs of Sunny Strong, a nutritionist-formulated multigrain drink produced by Sunway XFarms.

Many people give up their New Year’s fitness resolutions by the second Friday in January, also known as Quitter’s Day. A new analysis of data contributed by approximately 100,000 participants in the Apple Heart and Movement Study over four years identified participants with Apple Watch consistently keep up their exercise levels through Quitter’s Day and beyond.

Each year, following a decrease in average exercise minutes during the November and December holiday period, the average daily exercise minutes of Apple Watch users in the study not only rapidly increased in January, but also continued to progress into the spring. During the first two weeks of January, over 60 percent of Apple Watch users increased their daily exercise minutes by over 10 percent from their December average. Notably, many Apple Watch users kept up those exercise levels through Quitter’s Day and into the following months. Nearly 80 percent of those who increased their exercise minutes maintained those increased exercise levels through the second half of January, with 90 percent of that group also maintaining elevated levels through February and March.

The analysis included study participants who elected to share Activity data and consistently wore their Apple Watch over multiple years. The Apple Heart and Movement Study, conducted in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the American Heart Association, and Apple, included over 250,000 people across the United States who consented to participate.¹

Is This Normal? Malaysian Parents Barely Think About Their Kid's Mental Health

Once only seen in movies, violence and tragedies in children and teenagers are escalating. This year alone, a 9‑year-old allegedly slashed his 6-year-old brother after losing Roblox points, a teen boy fatally stabbed a classmate over unrequited feelings, and a 17-year-old accused of killing his mother and brother.

Despite these worrying cases, the exclusive country member of Malaysia for the Worldwide Independent Network of Market Researcher (WiN), Central Force International’s latest findings reveal that over half of Malaysian parents give little or no thought to their children’s mental health. This suggests a major disconnect between what is happening around them and what parents believe is happening at home.

The headspace of children today is clearly not where it should be. Is it time for parents to helicopter again?

The Reality of Growing Up in an Always-On Digital World

From as young as three to as old as 12, children are navigating a world vastly different from the one their parents grew up in. “The pressures aren’t necessarily heavier, but they are fundamentally different and often invisible to adults, when social media exposes them to expectations and standards they may not have the maturity to process yet,” shares Nicole Tan.

It’s hard for children not to compare when their feeds show friends travelling, unboxing new gadgets, or living what looks like a perfect life. Even if they know these moments are curated, it can still feel like they’re falling behind. “I’ve seen many kids describe this as feeling like everyone else is doing something exciting while they’re stuck doing nothing special,” Jean Goh recalled.

The MCMC Internet Users Survey 2022 reported that 11.7% of Malaysians spend over 18 hours online per day, and 16% of them are under 20, which leaves many teenagers with almost no mental downtime. This constant digital engagement can easily spill over into real emotional distress. And seeing polished versions of their peer’s lives can slowly chip away at their confidence. They may start doubting whether they’re interesting, successful, “fun” enough, and even feel lonely in a room full of people.

A separate qualitative study by Central Force affirmed this concern as many parents reported excessive screen time on personal devices as one of the top three mental-health risks for their children

These emotional pressures sit on top of real-world stressors — on- and offline bullying, violent news cycles, academic load, and high expectations at home and school — creating a layered mental burden that many children struggle to articulate.

That’s not all. The Social & Economic Research Initiative (SERI)’s 2024 study found that 9% of teen girls and 13% of teen boys have been victims of social media scams, and more than half have encountered harmful or disturbing content online.

These pressures often manifest through behavioural, psychological, and emotional pressure — many of which parents overlook until they escalate.

Parents Are Sounding The Alarm

New data from Central Force International, exclusive country member of Malaysia for the Worldwide Independent Network of Market Researcher (WiN), now shows just how widespread parental concerns have become.

43% of Malaysian parents reported intense worry about their child’s mental health. This is higher than many other Asia-Pacific nations featured in the global report, where Vietnam (28%), Australia (27%), China (21%), Indonesia (14%), and Thailand (11%) report considerably lower levels of parent concerns.

This combination of high worry but low day-to-day attention suggests many parents only react when a crisis emerges, rather than checking in regularly.

Despite high concern, Central Force found that Malaysian parents spend significantly fewer hours per week discussing emotional wellbeing with their children compared to the global average.

Other global patterns from the WiN study help explain this: Parents aged 35–54 are the most stressed, reflecting the challenges of adolescence. Those with lower education levels and stay-at-home mothers feel the most on edge as well.

When applying this context to Malaysia, it points to the possibility that many highly stressed parents may have limited emotional bandwidth to monitor or support their children, even if they care deeply.

This signals that parents’ confidence in handling their children’s challenges may also be influenced by the information, resources, and support available to them.

Parents Want to Help, But Can’t

38% of Malaysian parents fear their child may be silently struggling, higher than the 26% reported globally, with good reason. The Ministry of Health reported in September 2025 that one in four Malaysian adolescents exhibit depressive symptoms, reflecting a growing mental health strain among children.

Several factors can make children hesitant to open up. Not because they don’t trust their parents, but because they care so much about the relationship. Tan states that children might fear disappointing them, being judged, misunderstood, or met with reactions that feel invalidating, even when they have a strong bond with their parents. Jacqueline Foo adds that generational and cultural gaps can widen this divide. “Children often assume parents from another generation “won’t get it” or simply lack the language to express complex feelings.”

The result is an emotional void where children withdraw, hide struggles, or avoid difficult conversations, making it harder for parents to notice warning signs. Central Force’s report suggests that this silence may also be happening on the parents’ side, as many feel unsure how to start conversations about emotions or mental wellbeing, leading to avoidance. Without support, children may become more reactive or aggressive, even leading to bullying.

Therefore, when parents are unaware of their children's state of mind, they are left vulnerable.

Alarmingly, Central Force International’s report finds that over half of Malaysian parents give little or no thought to their children’s mental health.

Could This Mean Parents Are Failing to Spot Red Flags?

Children often internalise the emotional atmosphere around them and become overly compliant or people-pleasing out of fear. Goh recalls a child who said, “I get a stomachache every morning because it feels like something bad is going to happen”, simply because his mother rushes anxiously every morning. Another child shared that they “try not to make noise so my parents won’t start again” because his parents argue frequently.

Cultural expectations in many Asian families further parentifies children, particularly older siblings, who may feel an unspoken pressure to take on adult responsibilities or be the "strong one". Over time, these early experiences affect how they cope with relationships and emotions later in life.

At the same time, some children appear calm and well-regulated at school but release intense emotions only at home where they feel safe. Foo noted that it is common for parents to misread this as misbehaviour or a bad temper, not realising it is often a sign that the child has been holding themselves together all day.

Insights from other Central Force studies reveal that many parents admitted feeling in the dark about what is really happening in their children’s lives and worry that their kids may fall in with negative influences, highlighting the challenge of spotting warning signs early.

However, even attentive parents can struggle to pick up these signs. To help, Tan recommends the 4Ds:

Differences: Noticeable changes in a child’s usual patterns, such as sleep, appetite, motivation, social behaviour, or communication.
Dysfunctionality: When changes begin interfering with daily life, such as difficulty concentrating, declining school performance, withdrawing from favourite activities, or struggling with age-appropriate tasks.
Dysregulation: Emotional or behavioural outbursts, irritability, excessive crying, meltdowns, or difficulty calming down after small triggers.
Distress: Persistent worry, sadness, or physical complaints like stomach aches or headaches without medical cause.

You Don’t Need To Hover, Just Be Your Child’s Emotional Co-Pilot

Creating emotional safety doesn’t require helicopter parenting. Parents must actively create an emotionally safe space for children to communicate. This involves quality time, normalising emotions, treating mistakes as learning opportunities, and building independence and confidence.

Don’t be afraid to share a little honesty too. “If a parent or teacher says, ‘I get overwhelmed too sometimes,’ it takes away the invisible pressure kids feel to be perfect,” Goh explains.

This shows that stress and sadness are human, not failures. Validating these feelings, instead of dismissing them, helps children feel secure and empowered, encouraging them to speak up, seek support, and become confident decision-makers.
