As we begin the month, we count down to the 14th with first grade Valentine’s math activities like this skip counting match-up. It’s so easy to incorporate hearts and love-themed materials all month long!

And, of course on Valentine’s Day, we play this Valentine’s Day bingo during our class party. I love to get the little candy hearts from the store for them to use as markers. 

Since February is just past the halfway point of the school year, it’s so important that my students continue to review their math and literacy skills that they’ve worked hard to learn all year. That’s why I always fit in a page from this February literacy journal and this math journal each school day during the month. 

Another fantastic way to incorporate all of the holidays and themes into your students’ learning is to use these First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers. These centers will help your students review and practice what they’ve learned so far this year, all while having a super great time. First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers

The February learning centers come with 40 centers for you to use with your students. You may think that 40 sounds like a lot, and it is! But you can split the centers up and even use some of them as whole group work, morning work, sub plans, etc. The options are endless when you have so much at your fingertips!

Using the February First Grade Centers

Once you purchase and download the First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers, it’s time to explore! You can look through all of the different categories to see the centers that you now own. I always suggest starting by making a list of which ones you like and for what purpose, that way you can add them to your lesson plans easily.

Before printing, make sure to check out the whole file of each center. All of them come with both color and black & white options, and many come with differentiation options as well. Once you decide what you want to use, send to the printer. If possible, print on cardstock or other heavy paper for things you want to laminate and reuse.

Once a hard copy is printed, I like to use Post-it notes to write down how many copies of each thing I need. Then once I make copies, I can get to laminating and cutting. It’s a lot of prep work, but the more I laminate now, the less I have to prep next February! 

Once everything is ready, decide how you’ll introduce the centers to your first graders. Some teachers choose to model one a day, while others do batches all at once. Most importantly, make sure to set clear expectations for each type of center to help your students be as independent as possible while working and playing.

Writing Centers

Are you a Valentine’s Day fan or are you someone who thinks it’s just a made-up holiday to boost flower and greeting card sales? I, for one, LOVE Valentine’s Day because I love love, and I love celebrating, so why wouldn’t I love to celebrate love?!

Before we reach Valentine’s Day, we start off the month learning about and celebrating Groundhog Day. We make fun crafts like this paper plate groundhog craft, and we work on counting with our groundhog first to twenty mats. We learn all about groundhogs with this collection of books and this science unit. The Groundhog Animal Study unit is packed full of engaging February pre-k activities that the students will love. 

After Groundhog Day, we jump right into everything Valentine’s related! I make different versions of this heart-matching puzzle activity that will help my students review both math and literacy skills. Using it for number recognition is one of my favorite heart-themed math activities! 

We also make this thumbprint craft to hang on a bulletin board or send home as decoration. It’s the easiest Valentine’s pre-k craft that works on fine motor skills too! 

After Valentine’s Day, we make sure to celebrate Dental Health Month by learning all about taking care of our teeth with this science unit. I told you there were SO many topics and themes to study during February!

Another way I love to use all of the themes and celebrations in February is to incorporate them into my math and literacy centers. That’s why we made these Math and Literacy Centers for Pre-k!

Using the February Pre-k Centers

Once you purchase and download the center bundle, you can look through everything that you now own! You’ll notice how each subject is broken into five different categories of centers, and then there are four centers within each category. 

Once you have taken a peek at the centers, make a list of what needs to be printed, or better yet, print them out immediately! Once printed, you can organize your materials into piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. We always recommend laminating as much as possible so that you can reuse parts of the centers each and every year without re-printing everything. 

Next, you can decide how you want to use the centers. They are created to have one type of each center per week in the month, but some teachers enjoy using them all month long. Additionally, many teachers use some of the centers, like the poetry centers or write the rooms, as whole-class lessons and activities. 

No matter how or when you choose to use the materials with your students, our greatest piece of advice is to model, model, model! Show your students exactly how to use the materials and let them know your expectations. This will help your students become more independent with the centers over time.

February Literacy Activities for Pre-k

Pocket Chart and Match-Up Activities

A pocket chart and match-up center is always fun! If you don’t have a pocket chart, just use a space big enough for your students to spread out the pieces, like on a table or the floor. After Thanksgiving, staff and students are 100% aware that all we have to do is make it a few more weeks until a nice long holiday break. But somehow, those “few more weeks” are the busiest, longest weeks ever. They’re filled with assessments, conferences, planning, prepping for January…the list goes on and on. 

So, since we already know December will be rough, we do our best to plan easy and fun activities that will keep our students learning and engaged. I love using match-up activities in my centers or as morning work like this editable sight word activity and this Christmas tree number match-up. We keep the little ones busy with exciting wintertime science experiments like these salt crystal ornaments and hot chocolate experiment. As we enjoy our hot chocolate, we read our collection of Christmas books.

And we start each math and literacy block off with a page from our daily math and daily literacy journals for December. The December worksheets for kindergarteners that come in these journals help to reinforce skills that my students have learned throughout the first quarter of the school year.

Using the December Kindergarten Math and Literacy Centers

Once you purchase and download your centers, look through all 40 files to see what you now own! Make a list of things to print, cut, copy, laminate, etc. Trust me, the more you prep to make them last, the easier the prep will be for years to come. If you print on cardstock and laminate the center materials this year, next year you’ll have a lot less to do.

When you introduce the centers to your students, either all at once, in chunks, or one week at a time, make sure to set explicit expectations for how you want the centers to be used. Model each activity and help your students with them the first few times. This will enable your students to be a lot more independent as the month goes on!

There is no one “right” way to use these centers. You can use them in your stations, as whole group activities, as sub plans, etc. Make them work for you. Once you take a look at all of the centers, you may even find that some of them fit perfectly with your kindergarten winter thematic units, so you may split them up to be done at different times during the season.

We start off the month by recovering from Halloween. Then, we begin to discuss and learn about Veteran’s Day. We talk about and explore the importance of the day with this Veteran’s Day Emergent Reader.

After Veteran’s Day, we start to prepare for Thanksgiving! I just love this holiday. There is something about taking the time to think about and discuss everything that we’re grateful for that just fills my heart with so much joy. Our littlest learners share their gratitude with this I Am Thankful turkey activity and our thankful turkey craft. Books from this collection of Thanksgiving stories are a great way to start the conversation!

My favorite November learning themes include turkeys, hayrides, pumpkins, scarecrows, and football! But I especially like focusing on turkeys. In science, we learn all about wild turkeys in this animal study. We enjoy our turkey pre-k centers with activities like this turkey name building. Using the November Pre-k Math and Literacy Centers

I always suggest starting off by looking through and familiarizing yourself with everything and taking notes of what you plan to use right away. There are so many options within each resource, including both color and black & white versions, so it’s a good idea to look through and decide which option you’re going to print and use. 

Once you make a list and start printing, separate the activities into piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. Remember that the more activities you laminate to reuse, the less prep the centers will be next year! 

Probably the best piece of advice I can give you when using these centers to review your pre-kindergarten November lessons is to model, model, model. Model how to use each type of center for your students, and set clear and concise expectations for using them. This will help your littlest learners be more independent while they are working and playing.

We love to practice spelling our names with this Pumpkin Name Building Activity. And I love to use these October Math and Literacy Centers for pre-k that are full of fun pumpkin learning activities. We hear lots of giggles in the classroom with our jack o’lantern memory game.

I love to engage my students in exciting activities from this collection of Halloween STEM ideas. With all the excitement that comes with October, STEM activities are perfect for giving the students a chance to work together to complete festive challenges. We dive more into science with our apples and pumpkins science units.

To celebrate everyone’s favorite October holiday, we play several rounds of this Halloween bingo game. It gives my students a chance to practice their listening skills, and it is great to play when you have parent volunteers come in! To keep with the Halloween theme, we engage in some gross and spooky fun with this blood cell model science activity and read as many ghost and goblin Halloween books as we can.

Like every other month, we work on our literacy skills with this review journal. I also love to use the October math journal as a way to transition to the next subject of the day. The October worksheets that come in this journal are an excellent way to help my first graders practice the math concepts that we’ve been busy learning.

Using the October Math and Literacy Centers

So once you purchase and download the October centers, then what? We’ve got all the tips and tricks you need to feel confident using the first grade math and literacy centers in October. 

First, make sure you look through the entire file after downloading. Check out everything that you now own and make a list of things you want to print at school (or just print them right away!). After that, organize the materials in piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc.

The children are excitedly bouncing off the walls with the first mention of candy, costumes, and October 31st. But while October is full of fun, there is also a lot of learning that must be done! We dive into pumpkins with our stacks of books all about pumpkins and “fill” our wheelbarrows with pumpkin CVC words and editable pumpkin sight words.

We can’t even think about this time of year without exploring Halloween themes. These October science experiments are spooktacular and entertaining. Our kindergarteners love rhyming with bats and working on numbers, letters, and their fine motor skills with these bats. We add in Halloween STEM activities throughout the month to get us excited and engaged.

I like to start off each school day of the month by giving my students a page to work on from our October Daily Literacy Review Journal, the perfect morning work! And on the same note, I use our October Daily Math Review Journal pages as a transition into our math block or as a way to end math. They are the perfect little grab-and-go activities! 

At this point in the year, we can better understand our students’ individual needs so we can meet them where they’re at. I don’t know about you, but something about the anticipation of wearing costumes and getting candy keeps my kids at a level ten of excitement all month long. Instead of fighting it, I choose to play into it. I fill my classroom with October-themed games, fall crafts, and Halloween books to make our learning fun. 

I teach about pumpkins with this explore a pumpkin activity and use easy activities like this jack o’lantern memory game to practice whatever skills my kids need to review. I shelve my own fear of spiders to teach my kids all about them with this exciting spider science unit. I even use spaghetti to make this spider sensory bin. We decorate the classroom with these super fun bats to get my students really excited about learning in October!

Using the Pre-k Math and Literacy Centers for October
