प्रश्न 1. बाढ़ की खबर सुनकर लोग किस तरह की तैयारी करने लगे?

उत्तर :
बाढ़ की खबर सुनते ही पूरे शहर में आतंक फैल गया। लोग अपना सामान नीचली मंजिल से ऊपरी मंजिल पर ले जाने लगे। दुकानदार अपना माल रिक्शा, टमटम, ट्रक और टेम्पो पर लादकर सुरक्षित स्थानों पर ले जा रहे थे। खरीद-बिक्री बंद हो चुकी थी। लोग खाने-पीने का सामान, दियासलाई, मोमबत्ती, दवाइयाँ और किरोसीन आदि का प्रबंध करने में जुट गए थे।

प्रश्न 2. बाढ़ की सही जानकारी लेने और उसका रूप देखने के लिए लेखक क्यों उत्सुक था?

उत्तर :
लेखक ने बाढ़ के बारे में पहले केवल सुना था, कभी देखा नहीं था। उसने अपनी रचनाओं में बाढ़ की विनाशलीला का उल्लेख किया था, इसलिए वह स्वयं अपनी आँखों से बाढ़ का दृश्य देखना चाहता था। वह यह जानने के लिए उत्सुक था कि बाढ़ का पानी शहर में कैसे प्रवेश करता है और किस प्रकार विनाश मचाता है।

प्रश्न 3. सबकी जुबान पर एक ही जिज्ञासा - “पानी कहाँ तक आ गया है?” — इस कथन से जनसमूह की कौन-सी भावनाएँ व्यक्त होती हैं?

उत्तर :
इस कथन से लोगों की जिज्ञासा प्रकट होती है। लोग बाढ़ की स्थिति जानने के लिए उस स्थान की ओर जा रहे थे। उनके मन में भय नहीं, बल्कि कौतूहल था। सभी यह जानना चाहते थे कि पानी कितनी दूर तक फैल चुका है और किन-किन क्षेत्रों को प्रभावित कर चुका है।

प्रश्न 4. ‘मृत्यु का तरल दूत’ किसे कहा गया है और क्यों?

उत्तर :
बाढ़ के बढ़ते जल को ‘मृत्यु का तरल दूत’ कहा गया है क्योंकि इस जल ने असंख्य लोगों और जीव-जंतुओं को नष्ट कर दिया। बाढ़ ने घर उजाड़ दिए, लोगों को बेघर कर दिया और कई प्राण ले लिए। इसी कारण इसे मृत्यु का तरल दूत कहा गया है।

उत्तर :
आपदाओं से निपटने के लिए सतर्कता सबसे आवश्यक है। मौसम की जानकारी रखते हुए सुरक्षा उपाय अपनाने चाहिए। खाद्य सामग्री, दवाइयाँ और पानी का भंडारण करना चाहिए। सरकार और स्वयंसेवी संस्थाओं को पहले से तैयारी करनी चाहिए तथा चिकित्सा सुविधाओं की उचित व्यवस्था होनी चाहिए।

इस कथन में लोगों की स्वार्थपूर्ण मानसिकता पर चोट की गई है। लोग संकट की घड़ी में एक-दूसरे की सहायता करने के वजाय अपने निजी स्वार्थों की सिद्धि को अधिक महत्व देते हैं। अपने सुखसुविधायों को छोड़कर किसी संकटग्रस्त व्यक्ति या क्तियों का हाल-चाल जानने का भी कष्ट नहीं करते। उक्त कथन द्वारा लोगों की इसी मानसिकता पर चोट की गई है। यह कथन निश्चित रूप से कठोर और द्वेषपूर्ण है।

प्रश्न 7. खरीद-बिक्री बंद होने पर भी पान की बिक्री क्यों बढ़ गई?

उत्तर :
खरीद-बिक्री बंद हो चुकने पर भी पान की बिक्री अचानक बढ़ गई थी क्योंकिक्यों लोग बाढ़ को देखने के लिए बहुत बड़ी संख्या में इकट्ठे हो गए थे। वे बाढ़ से भयभीत नहीं थे, बल्कि हंसी-खुशी और कौतुहल से युक्त थे। ऐसे समय में पान उनके लिए समय गुजारने का सबसे अच्छा साधन था।

प्रश्न 8. लेखक को यह अहसास हुआ की उसके इलाके में भी पानी घुसने की संभावना है तो उसने क्या-क्या प्रबंध किए?

उत्तर :
जब लेखक को अहसास हुआ की उसके इलाके में भी पानी घुसने की संभावना है तो उन्होंने न्हों आवश्यक ईंधन, आलू, मोमबत्ती, दियासलाई, पीने का पानी, कम्पोज की गोलियाँ इकट्ठी कर लीं

ताकि बाढ़ से घिर जाने पर कुछ दिनों तक गुजारा चल सकें। उन्होंनेन्हों बाढ़ आने छत पर चले जाने का भी प्रबंध सुनिश्चित कर लिया।

प्रश्न 9. बाढ़ पीड़ित क्षेत्रों में कौन-सी बीमारियाँ फैलने की आशंका रहती है?

उत्तर :
उत्तर: बाढ़ के बाद हैजा, मलेरिया, टाइफाइड आदि बीमारियों के फैलने की संभावना रहती है किक्यों बाढ़ के उतरे पानी में मच्छर अत्यधिक मात्रा में पनपते हैं जिसके कारण मलेरिया जैसी बीमारी हो जाती है। पानी की कमी से लोगो को गंदा पानी पीना पड़ता है जो हैजा और टाइफाइड जैसी रियों को न्यौता देता है।

प्रश्न 10. नौजवान के पानी में उतरते ही कुत्ता भी पानी में कुंद गया।दोनों ने किन भावनाओं के वशीभूत होकर ऐसा किया?

उत्तर :
नौजवान और कुत्ता परस्पर गहरे आत्मीय थे। दोनों एक-दूसरे के सच्चे साथी थे। उनमें नव और पशु का भेदभाव भी नहीं था। व एक-दूसरे के बिना नहीं रह सकते थे। यहाँ तक कि जवान कोकुत्ते के बिना मृत्यु भी स्वीकार नहीं थी। इस व्यवहार से उनकी गहरी मैत्री का परिचय मिलता है।

यहाँ लेखक के बाढ़ से उत्पन्न दु:ख को व्यक्त किया गया है। वह इस घटना को पहले कैमरे में कैद करना चाहता था परन्तु उसके पास कैमरा उपलब्ध नहीं था। फिर उसके मन में विचार आया कि वह कलम के द्वारा पन्नों में इस त्रासदी को लिखे जिसे उसने पहले स्वयं

भोगा था पर उसकी कलम भी उसके पास नहीं थी। वो भी चोरी हो गई थी। इतनी तीव्र उत्कंठा होते हुए भी लेखक ने सोचा की अच्छा है, कुछ भी नहीं क्योंकिक्यों बाढ़ के इस सजीव भयानक रुप को अगर वो अपने कैमरे व कलम से पन्नों पर उतार भी लेता तो उसे दु:ख ही तो प्राप्त होता। उसे बार-बार देखकर, पढकर उसे कुछ प्राप्त नहीं होता तो फिर उनकी तस्वीर लेकर वह क्या करता।

Q1 : What did Lencho hope for?

Answer: Lencho hoped for rains as the only thing that his field of ripe corn needed was a shower.

Answer: Lencho's crops were ready for harvest. However, they required a good downpour before harvesting. After a downpour, he could sell the harvest and get money. That is why he compared the raindrops to 'new coins'.

1.How is our atmosphere different from the atmospheres on Venus and Mars?

Answer: Earth’s atmosphere is different from those of Venus and Mars. This difference lies essentially in their compositions. Earth's atmosphere is a mixture of nitrogen (79%), oxygen (20%), and a small fraction of carbon dioxide, water vapours and other gases. This makes the existence of life possible on Earth. However, the atmospheres on Venus and Mars mainly consist of carbon dioxide. The amount of carbon dioxide on these planets can range from 95% to 97%.

2. How does the atmosphere act as a blanket?

Answer: The atmosphere acts as a blanket by performing the following functions:

(a) It keeps the average temperature of the Earth fairly constant during day tme and even during the course of whole year.

(b) It prevents a sudden increase in the temperature during day time.

3. What causes winds?

Answer: The uneven heating of the earth’s surface is the main cause for the winds. On being heated more the air raises up and hence low pressure is created. Hence the air in high pressure occupy the low-pressure region causing the wind.

4: How are clouds formed?

Answer: During day time, on being heated, a large amount of water evaporates from various water bodies and goes into the air. A part of this water vapour also reaches the atmosphere through biological activities such as transpiration and respiration. This causes the air in the atmosphere to heat up.

When this heated air rises, it expands and cools, which results in the condensation of water vapour forming water droplets. The presence of dust and other suspended particles in air also facilitates the process of condensation The formation of water droplets leads to the formation of clouds.

5: List any three human activities that you think would lead to air pollution.

(i) All cellular processes need water as a medium. Usually, the reactions that take place in our body or within the cells occur between substances that are dissolved in water.

A) Giuseppe Mazzini: Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian revolutionary, born in Genoa in 1807. He was a member of the secret society of the Carbonari. At the age of 24, he was sent into exile in 1831 for attempting a revolution in Liguria. He founded underground societies named ‘Young Italy’ in Marseilles and ‘Young Europe’ in Berne, whose members were like-minded young men from Poland, France, Italy and the German States.

B) Count Camilo de Cavour: Cavour was chief misnister of Sardinia-Piedmont state who led the movement to unify the regions of Italy. He was neither a revolutionary nor a democrat. Like many other wealthy and educated members of the Italian elite, he spoke French much better than he did Italian. He engineered a careful diplomatic alliance with France, which helped Sardinia-Piedmont defeat the Austrian forces in 1859, and thereby free the northern part of Italy from the Austrian Habsburgs.

C) The Greek War of Independence: This was a successful war of independence waged by Greek revolutionaries between 1821 and 1829 against the Ottoman Empire. The Greeks were supported by the West European countries, while poets and artists hailed Greece as the cradle of European civilisation. Finally, the Treaty of Constantinople of 1832 recognised Greece as an independent nation.

D) The Frankfurt Parliament: It was an all-German National Assembly formed by the middle-class professionals, businessmen and prosperous artisans belonging to the different German regions. It was convened on 18 May, 1848 in the Church of St. Paul, in the city of Frankfurt. This assembly drafted a constitution for a German nation to be headed by a monarchy subject to a parliament. However, it faced opposition from the aristocracy and military. Also, as it was dominated by the middle classes, it lost its mass support base. In the end, it was forced to disband on 31 May, 1849.

E) The role of women in nationalist struggles: The issue of extending political rights to women was a controversial one within the liberal movement, in which large numbers of women had participated actively over the years. Women had formed their own political associations, founded newspapers and taken part in political meetings and demonstrations. Despite this, they were denied suffrage during the election of the Assembly. When the Frankfurt Parliament convened in the Church of St. Paul, women were admitted only as observers to stand in the visitors’ gallery.

Being a part of the lives of the common people, folk culture enabled nationalists to carry the message of nationalism to a large and diverse audience. • Language also played a distinctive role in developing nationalist feelings in Europe. They did so by refusing to preach in Russian, and by using Polish for Church gatherings and religious instruction. Inselbergs ace seen in deserts noted for high velocity winds.

7. What is oasis? What is its significance?

Ans. Oasis is a fertile area in the desert region usually having small, isolated spring and little vegetation. With the transportation of materials to other pans of deserts by wind, some areas may be lowered down almost to the level of underground water giving rise to some depressions; this area is termed as oasis.

Oasis are patches of water and vegetation in arid and sandy land. hence their presence is very significant in providing a place for settlement, scope for agriculture and development of economic activities. People can also travel through deserts as the occasional oasis gives them the required water, shade, etc.

8. What are sand dunes? How are they formed?

Ans. Sand dunes refer to a mound or ridge of wind-blown sand. The dunes are generally mobile as they move with the wind. There is a wide range of variation in the shape, size and structure of different types of sand dunes, which depend on various factors like properties of wind, wind direction and energy, vegetative cover, surface structure, etc.

Formation of sand dunes: There are three categories of sand dunes in deserts. These are:

A) Longitudinal sand dunes: These sand dunes are formed longitudinally along the direction of wind.

B) Transverse sand dunes: These sand dunes are formed transverse to the wind direction.

C) Barkhans sand dunes: Some sand dunes are formed having a shape of crescent. These sand dunes are called barkhans sand dunes.

Sand dunes are formed due to the depositional activities of wind in the desert areas. Due to deflation, the dust, sand and clay particles are carried away by the wind. In the desert areas, the wind blows with greater velocity due to the absence of any high raised landforms. But, when such wind meets an obstruction, viz. bush, a fencepost or a large rock, the speed of the wind gets reduced, and it starts depositing the sand and dust fragments on the leeward side of such obstacles. The initial deposition then acts as an obstruction which facilitates subsequent deposition. In due course of time, the area starts gaining height which results. In the formation of sand dunes. Sand dunes are predominantly found in deserts with sandstones.

(iii) Explain why water does not gather in the hollowed out portions of A and D.

Answer:

(i) Water gathers in the hollowed portions of set-up B and C because water enters the potato as a result of osmosis. Since the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, the water moves inside by osmosis. Hence, water gathers in the hollowed portions of the potato cup.

(ii) Potato A in the experiment acts as a control set-up. No water gathers in the hollowed portions of potato A.

(iii) Water does not gather in the hollowed portions of potato A because potato cup Ais empty. It is a control set-up in the experiment.

Water is not able to enter potato D because the potato used here is boiled. Boiling denatures the proteins present in the cell membrane and thus, disrupts the cell membrane. For osmosis, a semi-permeable membrane is required, which is disrupted in this case. Therefore, osmosis will not occur. Hence, water does not enter the boiled potato cup.

Question 10: Which type of cell division is required for growth and repair of body and which type is involved in formation of gametes?

Answer: There are two ways in which a cell divides:

a)Mitosis

b)Metosis

Ans- Mary Curzon, the wife or then viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, visited Kaziranga in 1904 with the knowledge that the place was famous for rhinos. However she could not spot a single rhino, and this propelled her to request Lord Curzon to do something to protect the rhinos of the region. In 1905, the Kaziranga proposed Reserve Forest was created. As its boundaries expanded, It was named the Kaziranga Game Sanctuary in 1916. Visitors were now allowed into the park, through hunting was forbidden. To emphasis the purpose of the park,through hunting was forbidden. To emphasis the purpose of the park as a site for conservation of Wildlife Sanctuary by P.D. Stracey the forest conservationist. Finally in 1974, it was designated as a National park.

2. Write a short note on Talatal Ghar.

Ans- The ruins of Talatal Ghar can be found in Sivasagar. It was, however, once a magnificient structure. There were four storeys above ground and three below. There were two secret tunnels as well. The first was a massive 16- kilometer tunnel leading to the Gargaon palace, and the second was a 3- kilometer tunnel leading to the Dikhow river the tunnels, however are now closed.

Ans- The Chraideo Maidams are found at Chraideo, 22 Kms away from Sivasagar. Chraideo was the first capitals of Siu Ka Pha, the founder of the ahom dynasty, and for the nobility of the time, and many royal graveyards still exist. These Maidams even have tomb vaults like the pyramids of Egypt.
