The enormous stained glass windows of the cathedral in Mallorca (something like 14 meters in diameter) are undoubtedly impressive. I found them particularly fascinating when zooming in with a 600mm zoom to abstract it from the whole.

A wall of ice fractures into shards as it slowly warms up. As with the previous shot, this was captured in the ‘wild’ on the banks of the Wisła river in Poland.

This dense collection of flowers goes by the name Hylotelephium, aka Stonecrop. Interestingly they also have another name “live-for-ever”, potentially as a result of them generally being very hardy and resilient.

It certainly is a fascinating flower, rich in colour and overwhelming the eyes with sheer density. It also plays an important role in later summer, as it flowers much later than most plants and is an important source of nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies. And has the side benefit of providing floral colour for us as the autumn closes in!

Colour is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of winter (especially a Berlin winter), but sometimes it can surprise you just how colourful things can be. The distinctly deep yellowish hues of some of the branches here contrasting against a rare pure blue sky, combined with the low light contrasts, make this a refreshingly vivid image. Topped off with the interesting textures and tones from the wholly frozen lake, it makes winter seem not an unbearable concept!

A hoverfly bathes in some warming sunshine on the closed lid of my old laptop – such intricate details in this beautiful insect. I was lucky to have plenty of time to line up a macro shot as it sat for some time just chilling out.

Following on from my previous photo of this duo, the chaotic sprawl of pixels seems to have resolved into a dot-matrix jellyfish, swimming from one side to the other.

I hope we can get another BYOB event like this happening before the end of 2026!

So yes, “Cat on a Warm Mallorcan Windowsill” is not quite as catchy as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, but it was very pleasing to watch. It was late evening mid-June, the sun was going down, and the cat was watching various birds and the life on the street below, not a care in the world.

I love how relaxed it seems.

I guess if taken at the correct angle, you can make any structure seem imposing. But I found the patterns of angular concrete moulds lent this image a certain extra something, especially when processed in black and white with the softness of the varied clouds above.

Sometimes looking up and down at the seemingly mundane things that surround us every day can be very rewarding. I found the visual effect of what might be considered slightly ugly old ceiling lights to be very rewarding and oddly calming.

I can safely say I’ve never written the words “flowering cow itch tree” together before, but from what I can tell, that is a good description of what this is! I feel quietly confident that this is indeed a Lagunaria patersonia, aka cow itch tree – named such because its seed capsules are filled with irritating hairs.

Doesn’t stop it being quite beautiful to look at, and if I remember correctly, the whole tree was filled with these beautiful flowers, and there were a few together with different coloured flowers.
