There are some vehicles that simply become part of your life.

Over the last twenty years I've been fortunate enough to photograph hundreds of incredible vehicles during my career as a car photographer. My work has taken me from photographing some of the world's rarest Ferraris, Aston Martins and McLarens through to military vehicles, trucks, aircraft and everything in between. Every assignment brings its own creative challenge, and every client has a different story to tell.

Yet despite spending countless hours behind the camera photographing some of the fastest, most expensive and technically advanced cars ever built, there has always been one vehicle that holds a special place in my heart. The original Land Rover Defender.

Perhaps it's because it represents the complete opposite of the modern supercar. It isn't about speed. It isn't about luxury. It isn't about technology. It's about character, purpose and honesty. Every scratch tells a story, every dent feels earned and every photograph seems to reveal another layer of its personality. I’ve driven many Defenders over the years and even had a few of my own and its probably the only car you’ll ever have where if something dents it you don’t really care too much, it simply marks a memory of where you are or is one more little bit of character, and let’s face it many of us give our Defenders a name.

For me, car photography has always been about capturing emotion as much as machinery, and very few vehicles possess as much genuine character as the Defender.

A Vehicle Born from Necessity

The Defender's story actually begins long before it carried the Defender name. Following the Second World War, Britain desperately needed practical vehicles that could help rebuild farms, businesses and industry. Inspired by the American Jeep, brothers Maurice and Spencer Wilks, who worked for Rover, began developing a rugged utility vehicle that could be used almost anywhere. The very first Land Rover made its public debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948.
Nobody could have imagined that this simple aluminium-bodied vehicle would become one of Britain's greatest automotive success stories.

Its design was driven almost entirely by practicality. Steel was still in short supply after the war, so aluminium alloy panels became the obvious choice. The box-like shape wasn't created for style, it was simply the easiest and strongest way to build a vehicle that could survive decades of hard work.

Over the years the Land Rover evolved through the Series I, Series II and Series III before eventually becoming known as the Defender in 1990. Although the name changed, the spirit never really did. It remained the dependable workhorse that farmers, explorers, military organisations, emergency services and adventurers trusted across the world.

Production of the original Defender finally came to an end in 2016 after an extraordinary 68-year production run. For many enthusiasts it felt like saying goodbye to an old friend but the story didn't end there.

In 2020 Land Rover introduced the all-new Defender. Rather than attempting to recreate the original, they chose to reinterpret it for a modern world. It retained the unmistakable silhouette and adventurous spirit while introducing cutting-edge engineering, advanced safety systems and exceptional off-road capability. Today both generations continue to be loved for very different reasons. The original represents simplicity and heritage, while the new Defender demonstrates how an icon can successfully evolve.

Eight Defender Facts

One of the joys of photographing Defenders is discovering the stories behind them.
Here are a few of my favourite facts.

1. The First Prototype Had Its Steering Wheel In The Middle
The earliest Land Rover prototype, nicknamed the "Centre Steer," placed the driver in the middle of the vehicle. It simplified production for both left and right-hand-drive markets and provided excellent visibility. Although it never reached production, it's one of the most unusual chapters in Defender history.

2. It Was Never Originally Called The Defender
For more than forty years the vehicle was simply known as the Land Rover. The Defender name wasn't introduced until 1990 to distinguish it from the newly launched Discovery.

3. Aluminium Was Chosen Out Of Necessity
Many people believe the aluminium body was selected to prevent rust. While that certainly became a benefit, the original reason was simply that post-war Britain had limited supplies of steel, making aluminium the practical alternative.

4. It Has Been Driven On Every Continent
From Antarctic expeditions to African safaris, Himalayan mountain passes and Australian deserts, the Defender has travelled to virtually every environment on Earth. Few vehicles can genuinely claim to have explored the planet quite like it.

5. It Became A Royal Favourite
Members of the Royal Family have long been associated with Land Rovers. Perhaps most memorably, a specially adapted Defender carried Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's coffin during the State Funeral procession in 2022, a fitting tribute to a monarch who genuinely loved the marque throughout her life.

6. Farmers Still Swear By Them
Even today, decades-old Defenders continue working on farms across Britain. Many have covered hundreds of thousands of miles and are still relied upon every single day, proving that good engineering often outlasts fashion.

 7. Every Defender Looks Different
Unlike many modern vehicles, owners rarely leave a Defender untouched. Roof racks, winches, snorkels, expedition equipment, lifted suspension, oversized tyres and custom paintwork mean that no two are ever quite alike. As a photographer, that's a dream because every shoot becomes unique.

 8. Values Continue To Rise
What was once simply an old working vehicle has become one of the most desirable classics on the market. Restored examples regularly command remarkable prices, while well-preserved originals have become highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Defenders Around the World

Few vehicles have built such an extraordinary global reputation.
The Defender has crossed deserts with scientific expeditions, climbed mountains with rescue teams, carried humanitarian aid into remote communities and transported wildlife conservationists across some of the harshest terrain on Earth. It has become a trusted companion wherever roads disappear.

It has also become a familiar face on the big screen.
From James Bond adventures to Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the Defender has appeared in countless films and television productions, usually cast as the dependable machine capable of reaching places no ordinary vehicle can. It rarely plays the glamorous role, but it's often the one that gets everyone safely home.

Celebrity ownership has only added to its legendary status. Adventurers, explorers, musicians, actors and racing drivers have all been drawn to its unmistakable charm. Unlike many prestige vehicles, owning a Defender has never really been about making a statement. It's about embracing a lifestyle built around exploration, practicality and adventure.

Even today, modern Defenders continue serving mountain rescue organisations, humanitarian projects, forestry teams, conservation groups and expedition companies across the globe. While technology has evolved enormously, the philosophy remains remarkably similar to that first Land Rover unveiled in 1948.

It exists to go where other vehicles simply can't.

Photographing A Legend

As someone whose career revolves around commercial car photography, I've learned that the best photographs often come from understanding the personality of the vehicle rather than simply its appearance. The Defender has many striking aspect to it that are almost is signature design, such as the distinctive bonnet, headlights and protective metal plates that are often fitted to the front wings.

The Defender is I would say, ‘wonderfully honest’.

Whether I'm photographing an immaculate concours restoration, a mud-covered expedition truck or the latest generation Defender against dramatic landscapes, each one tells a different story. The challenge is never making it look good, the challenge is deciding which aspect of its personality to reveal.

That's one of the reasons I still enjoy photographing them today as much as I did twenty years ago.

In fact, the Defender has been part of some of my happiest memories away from work as well.

Personal Memories

My wife and I got married we were given permission to marry in the majestic Eilean Donan Castle that was built in the thirteenth century and became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies. After that our glorious wedding we spent our honeymoon exploring the spectacular north coast of Scotland in a Defender. It wasn't an extravagant sports car or a luxury grand tourer. It didn't need to be, just a simple Defender with a couple of rucksacks thrown in the back and a paper map of the highlands.
We had no plan, we had no idea of what we would find on our journey, we had not a care in the world.

What it gave us was freedom to get lost in the moment and away from all the noise the world normally offers up in day-to-day life.

We discovered deserted beaches, winding coastal tracks, hidden glens and vast rolling landscapes where it often felt like we were the only people for miles. We'd stop simply because the view demanded it, watching the changing light sweep across the Highlands before climbing back in and heading somewhere we'd never visited before. Sitting on the bonnet in the middle of a stream we drove through eating Haggis pasties, for no other reason aside that we could.

Those are memories I'll always treasure.
Perhaps that's why every time I photograph a Defender, it feels slightly different from photographing any other vehicle.

It isn't just another commercial assignment.
It's photographing a machine that has become woven into my own story as much as Britain's automotive history.

Twenty years on, after photographing everything from priceless classics to some of the world's most exotic supercars, the Defender still makes me smile every time one arrives in front of my camera.

And somehow, I suspect it always will.

There are rally cars, and then there are rally icons. Few machines have earned that status quite like the 1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V Group A, a car that didn't just compete in the World Rally Championship—it dominated it. For many enthusiasts, the Delta Integrale represents the golden age of rallying. It arrived at a pivotal moment in motorsport history, following the demise of the fearsome Group B era.

While many believed rallying would never be the same again, Lancia had other ideas. The Italian manufacturer took the lessons learned from years of competition and channelled them into a car that would become one of the most successful rally machines ever built.

Introduced in 1989, the 16-valve version of the Delta Integrale was developed specifically to maintain Lancia's advantage in the fiercely competitive Group A category. Under the bonnet sat a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing around 200bhp in road-going form, while the factory rally cars developed significantly more power. Larger injectors, a revised Garrett turbocharger and an improved intercooler helped extract even greater performance from an already formidable package.

Visually, the changes over the earlier Integrale were subtle but purposeful. A raised bonnet bulge accommodated the new 16-valve cylinder head, while wider wheels and tyres gave the car an even more aggressive stance. The iconic box-arched silhouette remains one of the most recognisable shapes in rallying history, instantly identifiable whether viewed in a service park or on a mountain stage.

What made the Delta truly special, however, was its effectiveness. The four-wheel-drive system delivered astonishing traction on virtually any surface, while the revised torque split improved handling balance and driver confidence. Combined with compact dimensions and razor-sharp responses, the Integrale became the benchmark against which every rival was measured.

The 1989 season would prove just how capable the car was. The Integrale 16V made an immediate impact, taking victory on its debut and helping Lancia continue a remarkable run of World Rally Championship success. The Delta family would ultimately secure six consecutive manufacturers' titles, a record that still stands as one of the greatest achievements in the history of the sport.

Today, genuine Group A cars are among the most sought-after rally machines in the world. Their combination of competition pedigree, unmistakable Martini Racing liveries and motorsport significance has elevated them to legendary status. Collectors and enthusiasts alike regard the Delta Integrale as one of the finest homologation specials ever created—a car built because rallying demanded it, and one that exceeded every expectation.

More than three decades after it first appeared, the 1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V Group A remains a symbol of an era when manufacturers fought for glory on forest tracks, mountain passes and snow-covered stages. It is a reminder that some racing cars transcend the sport itself and become automotive legends.

And few deserve that title more than the Delta Integrale.

Few aircraft stir emotion quite like the Hawker Hurricane, an aircraft that was sometimes affectionately referred to by those who flew her, ‘the Flying Can Opener’.
Although often overshadowed by the Spitfire, it was the Hurricane that shouldered the greatest burden during the Battle of Britain, accounting for more enemy aircraft destroyed than any other RAF fighter during the conflict. Photographing one today is therefore far more than simply another aircraft photography assignment, it is an opportunity to preserve an important piece of aviation history.

A Living Piece of Aviation History

Built in 1942, Hawker Hurricane G-HHII represents one of the finest surviving examples of the aircraft that helped change the course of the Second World War. Every rivet, panel line and weathered surface tells part of an extraordinary story stretching back more than eighty years.

Unlike static museum exhibits, G-HHII remains an active flying aircraft, allowing photographers the rare opportunity to capture both the intricate craftsmanship of its construction and the unmistakable character that only a working warbird can possess.

Photographing historic aircraft requires a very different approach from modern commercial aviation photography. Every angle must respect the aircraft's heritage while showcasing its timeless design, creating imagery that feels authentic rather than staged.

Professional automotive based product photography is about far more than creating attractive images. It is about understanding a client's brand, communicating quality through every photograph and producing imagery that remains completely consistent across an entire campaign.

Over more than twenty years working as a commercial photographer, I have learned that the most successful product photography projects are rarely defined by a single spectacular image. Instead, they are measured by the ability to deliver a suite of photographs that all work together seamlessly, regardless of how many products are being photographed or how technically demanding the materials may be.

That experience has allowed me to work with many of the world's leading automotive manufacturers, producing both commercial car photography and specialist product photography for international marketing campaigns. One particularly rewarding relationship has been with McLaren Automotive, where I have completed three separate commissions producing product photography for their official accessories catalogues.

The first assignment centred on the McLaren 570S accessories range. Following the success of that project I was invited back to photograph McLaren Special Operations (MSO) accessories before completing a third commission for the McLaren 720S accessories programme.

For any commercial photographer, repeat commissions from a global luxury brand are among the strongest endorsements possible. They demonstrate confidence not only in creative ability but also in consistency, reliability and the ability to deliver photography that integrates perfectly into an established global brand. For me, these projects combined two specialist disciplines that have become the foundation of my career: premium automotive photography and technically demanding commercial product photography.

Product Photography Is About Brand Consistency

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding product photography is that each image is created in isolation.

In reality, successful commercial product photography is about creating an entire visual language. Every photograph within a brochure, catalogue or marketing campaign must feel connected. Customers should experience a consistent visual style from the first page to the last without ever consciously noticing the photography itself. That consistency is what gives premium brands their polished appearance.

Whether photographing carbon fibre mirror housings, forged alloy wheels, interior trim components, luggage collections or performance accessories, every image has to share identical lighting characteristics, colour accuracy, tonal balance and composition. This becomes even more important within the automotive industry, where customers expect the same attention to detail from the photography as they do from the engineering itself.

Every major manufacturer invests enormous resources developing a visual identity that reflects who they are. Their typography, colours, layouts, advertising style and photography all work together to create a recognisable brand experience.

Photography must support that identity rather than compete with it.

Every commercial photography project begins with understanding the brief. That means understanding not only what needs to be photographed, but why it is being photographed, how the images will be used, who the audience is and how they fit into the wider marketing campaign.

Throughout my career I have worked with international automotive manufacturers, engineering companies and luxury brands where every image has to meet strict creative standards. The lighting style, camera angles, contrast, colour grading, background treatment and post-production all have to remain faithful to the client's existing visual language.

For companies such as McLaren, consistency is part of the brand. The photography therefore becomes an extension of the design team rather than simply a collection of product images. Producing photography that faithfully follows a client's brand guidelines while still creating engaging, premium imagery is one of the reasons global clients continue to commission experienced commercial photographers.

Lighting The World's Most Challenging Materials

Luxury automotive product photography presents some of the most technically demanding lighting challenges in commercial photography.
Many automotive accessories combine multiple reflective surfaces within a single product. Carbon fibre sits alongside polished bodywork. Satin metals meet gloss painted finishes. Soft leather is positioned next to highly reflective lacquered trim.

Every one of those materials reacts differently to light.

Carbon fibre is perhaps one of the most challenging surfaces to photograph successfully. The distinctive weave pattern has to remain visible while avoiding harsh reflections that can easily overpower the detail. The lighting must reveal depth, craftsmanship and texture without becoming distracting.
Gloss black surfaces require equally careful control. Too much light and reflections dominate the image. Too little and the product loses definition completely.

Leather introduces another set of challenges. Premium automotive leather should appear tactile and luxurious, with enough directional lighting to reveal grain, stitching and craftsmanship while avoiding deep shadows that hide detail.

Each product therefore requires a carefully considered lighting solution, often involving multiple precisely controlled light sources working together to create a clean, elegant and natural appearance. These technical considerations are often invisible to the viewer.

That is exactly how successful product photography should be. The lighting should never become the subject, the product should.

Where Car Photography Meets Product Photography

Although much of my career has centred around commercial car photography, projects such as these demonstrate how closely car photography and product photography are connected. The same understanding of reflections, surface control, colour accuracy and precision lighting that is essential when photographing an entire vehicle becomes equally important when photographing individual automotive components.

In many respects, product photography can be even more demanding.

When photographing an entire car, the viewer is naturally drawn towards the overall shape and design. With product photography there is nowhere for imperfections to hide. Every reflection, every highlight, every texture and every surface becomes the focus of attention.

The precision required is considerably greater.

Working extensively within both commercial car photography and product photography allows techniques developed in one discipline to strengthen the other. The result is imagery that feels refined, premium and entirely consistent with the quality of the products themselves.

Experience is often the difference between creating attractive photographs and creating commercially successful photography. The three McLaren accessories commissions remain among the most enjoyable commercial photography projects I have undertaken.
Not simply because of the prestige associated with the brand, but because they brought together every aspect of specialist commercial photography that I enjoy most: technical lighting, precision, consistency and attention to detail.

Professional product photography is about much more than photographing objects. It is about understanding how imagery supports marketing, strengthens brand identity and helps communicate quality before a customer ever holds the product in their hands.

There are very few automotive brands that carry the same emotional weight as Aston Martin. For more than a century the marque has occupied a unique position in the automotive world, creating cars that combine performance, craftsmanship, elegance and beauty in a way that few manufacturers have ever managed. Aston Martin cars have never been simply about transportation. They have always been about aspiration, character and identity. This is a brief look at Aston Martin and my own personal journey photographing some of the worlds most beautiful and iconic cars that were ever designed and made by this historic British car manufacturer.

Founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, Aston Martin's story has been one of determination, innovation and an unwavering commitment to creating some of the most desirable cars ever built. From early racing machines through to grand tourers, Le Mans winners and modern-day supercars, the company has consistently produced vehicles that stir emotions long before the engine is ever started.

As a professional automotive photographer, I have spent well over a decade photographing these remarkable machines. During that time I have had the privilege of photographing more than 150 individual Aston Martins, covering almost every era of the company's history. From the oldest surviving Aston Martin in existence to some of the most significant competition cars ever built, it has been an extraordinary journey that has given me a unique perspective on one of Britain's most iconic automotive brands.

What began as a photographic assignment evolved into something much more meaningful. Over the years I have not only photographed these cars but also driven many of them, spent time with their owners, explored their histories and gained a deeper appreciation for what makes Aston Martin so special.

For me, these cars are far more than engineering achievements. They are rolling sculptures, pieces of industrial art that tell stories through shape, proportion and detail.

The Beginning: The Aston Martin A3

One of the greatest privileges of my career was photographing the Bamford & Martin A3, the oldest surviving Aston Martin in the world.

To stand beside the A3 is to stand at the very beginning of Aston Martin's story. Built in 1921, this remarkable machine represents the foundations upon which an entire automotive legacy would be built. Unlike modern performance cars, the A3 possesses a wonderfully raw and mechanical honesty. Every component is visible, every surface purposeful. It reflects an era when engineering was driven by ingenuity rather than computer modelling and when motor racing pioneers were creating history as they went along.

Photographing the A3 wasn't simply about documenting a historic vehicle. It was about capturing a moment in time. Looking through the camera, I was conscious that I was photographing the starting point of a company that would go on to produce some of the world's most admired cars. The responsibility felt enormous, but so did the privilege.

More Than Cars: Capturing Automotive Sculpture

One thing that has become increasingly clear over the years is that the greatest Aston Martins transcend their role as cars. The very best designs become sculpture.
As photographers we are constantly searching for shape, light, texture and form. Great car design naturally lends itself to car photography because every curve, reflection and surface has been carefully considered by its creators. Few manufacturers understand this better than Aston Martin.

Whether it is the flowing bodywork of a classic DB series car or the dramatic presence of a modern supercar, there is an elegance to Aston Martin design that makes these vehicles endlessly fascinating to photograph. I often find myself studying an Aston Martin in much the same way I would study a piece of art. The challenge is never simply recording what the car looks like. The challenge is revealing how it feels. That emotional connection is what separates a good automotive image from a memorable one.

The Icon That Defined a Generation: The Aston Martin DB5

If there is one Aston Martin that transcends the automotive world, it is undoubtedly the Aston Martin DB5. Few cars in history have achieved such universal recognition. Even people with little interest in cars know exactly what a DB5 is. Its association with James Bond undoubtedly helped cement its legendary status, but the truth is that the DB5 would be regarded as a masterpiece regardless of its cinematic fame. Every angle seems perfectly resolved. The proportions are balanced, elegant and timeless. More than sixty years after its introduction, it still looks effortlessly beautiful. Photographing a DB5 is always a special experience because it carries so much cultural significance. The challenge is finding ways to present a car that has already been photographed thousands of times while still bringing something fresh and personal to the image.

Yet every time I work with one, I find new details, new perspectives and new ways of appreciating what remains one of the greatest automotive designs ever created.

The Legend of the DBR1

Among all the Aston Martins I have photographed, few have left a stronger impression than the legendary DBR1. The DBR1 occupies a unique place in Aston Martin history. It represents one of the company's greatest achievements in motorsport and remains one of the most important racing cars ever produced by the marque. When photographing a car like the DBR1, you become acutely aware that you are standing in the presence of history. These are not simply old racing cars. They are machines that helped shape Aston Martin's identity.

The DBR1 has a presence that is difficult to describe. Every panel, every rivet and every curve speaks of competition, speed and endurance. Even standing still, it feels alive. As photographers, we often talk about subjects having character. The DBR1 has character in abundance.
It is impossible not to feel a sense of awe when working around a machine that occupies such an important chapter in automotive history.

Aston Martin Through the Decades

One of the most fascinating aspects of photographing more than 150 Aston Martins has been witnessing the evolution of the brand through successive generations.

The cars may change, but the DNA remains remarkably consistent. Whether photographing a DB4, DB5, DBS, V8 Vantage, Vanquish, DB9, Rapide, One-77, Vulcan, DBS Superleggera or the latest generation of Aston Martins, there is a common thread that connects them all. Each model reflects the era in which it was created while remaining unmistakably Aston Martin.

Photographing cars from different decades side-by-side reveals just how carefully the company has balanced heritage with innovation. Design trends come and go, technologies evolve and performance reaches new heights, yet Aston Martin has retained a distinctive identity throughout. That continuity is one of the reasons the brand remains so admired today.

Driving Legends

One of the unexpected privileges that has accompanied many of these photographic projects has been the opportunity to drive a number of the cars I have photographed.
For an automotive photographer, this adds an entirely new dimension to the creative process. Driving a car provides an understanding that simply cannot be gained from looking at it.

You begin to understand the character of the steering, the sound of the engine, the sensation of acceleration and the emotional response the car creates.
These experiences inevitably influence the photography. When I have driven a car, I am often able to visualise images that better communicate its personality. A grand tourer demands a different photographic approach than a lightweight sports car. A historic racing machine conveys a different energy to a modern supercar.

Understanding how a car feels allows me to better communicate that feeling through photography. I have often been asked which is my favourite Aston to drive and that is a very difficult question to answer, they all have things that I both love and hate. I love the simple beauty of the DB4, the power of the Zagato, but probably one of my favourites would have to be the classic Aston Martin Vanquish. Not the sexiest of all Astons and certainly not the most modern, I could not really put my finger on exactly what it is about that car, but it just feels right.

The Aston Martin 100 Year Centenary Book Project

Among the many Aston Martin commissions I have undertaken, one of the most significant was being commissioned to photograph imagery for an Aston Martin 100 year book.

The book ‘Portfolio of Dreams’ was a celebration of Aston Martin through their 100 years and is a major publication of nearly 700 pages of stunning photography capturing each of their significant models over their first 100 years of building cars, from the very first Bamford Martin car all the way through to the infamous DB5 and onwards to the latest DBS and One77 models of recent years. Printing commenced in 2015 with a limited boxed edition being signed by myself and sent to 100 Aston Martin owners around the globe.

Projects of this nature require far more than simply producing attractive photographs. They demand consistency, attention to detail and a deep understanding of both the subject matter and the story being told. The opportunity to contribute to a publication celebrating such an iconic brand was an enormous honour. It also represented a culmination of many years spent building experience photographing Aston Martin vehicles across multiple generations.
Looking back, the project serves as a reminder of just how extensive this journey with the marque has become.

For me one of my favourite moments in the project was being told that Sir Sterling Moss had agreed to write the foreword for the book.

Why Aston Martin Continues to Inspire
After more than ten years and over 150 Aston Martins, people occasionally ask whether the excitement ever fades.

The simple answer is no. Every Aston Martin carries its own story. Some represent milestones in automotive design. Some played important roles in motorsport history. Some are treasured family heirlooms passed between generations. Others represent the fulfilment of lifelong ambitions for their owners.

As a photographer, I have the privilege of capturing these stories. The cars themselves are extraordinary, but it is the human connection behind them that often makes the experience truly memorable. Looking back over a decade of photographing Aston Martin vehicles, I feel incredibly fortunate to have documented such an important part of British automotive heritage.

From the pioneering A3 to the iconic DB5, from the legendary DBR1 to the latest generation of Aston Martin models, every car has contributed another chapter to an ongoing photographic journey. And perhaps that is why Aston Martin remains such a compelling subject.

Because these cars are more than machines. They are sculptures, icons, works of art and pieces of history.

There are certain assignments that stay with you long after the lights are packed away and the final images have been delivered. For me, this was one of those car photography projects.

As a commercial photographer specialising in automotive and transport photography, I have been fortunate enough to work with some remarkable vehicles throughout my career. From supercars and specialist vehicles to commercial fleets, trucks, helicopters and even oil tankers, every project presents its own unique challenges. Yet there are very few assignments that carry the weight, prestige and emotional impact of photographing a collection of Ferrari legends. The very cars that to this day are still converted, and recognised by so many people.

Over the course of an intensive one week studio shoot, we welcomed some of the most iconic Ferrari models ever created. Each car represented a different chapter in Ferrari's remarkable history, from elegant grand tourers of the 1960s through to some of the most celebrated hypercars the world has ever seen. This is the ‘behind the scenes’ story of that week and a look at what we managed to achieve in studio during the shoot.

The challenge was never simply to photograph these cars. The challenge was to capture the emotion, heritage and presence that makes each Ferrari so special.

The Art of Photographing Automotive Icons

Tim - “It was a cold autumn morning when I arrived at the studio to begin preparations. As cables were laid out, lighting rigs assembled and the set meticulously prepared, there was a growing sense of anticipation. Over the following days, we would spend countless hours studying every curve, everybody line and every subtle detail of these automotive masterpieces.

One of the things I have always believed is that it is relatively easy to photograph a car so people can see what it looks like. The real skill lies in creating images that communicate how that car makes you feel. That emotional connection is what separates a simple vehicle photograph from a powerful automotive image. Sports cars, particularly Ferraris, present their own unique technical challenges. Highly polished paintwork sits alongside exposed carbon fibre, complex aerodynamic surfaces and intricate body sculpting. Light behaves differently across every material, meaning each vehicle demands its own carefully crafted lighting approach.

For me, this problem-solving process is one of the most rewarding aspects of automotive photography. It is a constant pursuit of perfection, balancing technical precision with artistic vision to create images that truly do justice to the subject. I often say to people that my biggest efforts are to shoot what it feels like, not what it looks like.”

Ferrari – More Than Just a Car Manufacturer

Few automotive brands evoke emotion quite like Ferrari. Founded by Enzo Ferrari, the company has become one of the most recognised and admired names in automotive history. Ferrari remains the only constructor to have competed in every season of the Formula One World Championship since it began in 1950, cementing its place at the very heart of motorsport.

The famous Ferrari name originates from the Italian word ferraro, meaning blacksmith, while the legendary Cavallino Rampante — the Prancing Horse — traces its origins to Italian World War One fighter ace Francesco Baracca. Ferrari's signature Rosso Corsa red has become one of the most recognisable colours in automotive history, symbolising passion, performance and Italian craftsmanship across generations.

Ferrari 250 GT Lusso – Timeless Elegance

The first chapter of our journey begins with the magnificent Ferrari 250 GT Lusso.

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever produced, the Lusso represents an era when automotive design was as much sculpture as engineering.
Designed by Pininfarina, its proportions remain breathtaking even today, with flowing lines and elegant detailing that appear effortless. Powered by the legendary Colombo V12 engine, the Lusso was designed as a grand tourer capable of crossing Europe at speed and in comfort. In the studio, the challenge was to preserve that elegance. The lighting needed to be subtle and refined, revealing the sculpted bodywork without overpowering the car's natural beauty.

Ferrari 288 GTO – The Hypercar Pioneer

The Ferrari 288 GTO marked the beginning of the modern hypercar era. Originally conceived for the infamous Group B racing category, the project evolved into one of the most desirable Ferraris ever built after the racing programme was cancelled before the car could compete. The 288 GTO was revolutionary for its time, combining lightweight composite materials with a twin-turbocharged V8 capable of pushing performance to extraordinary levels.

Photographing the 288 GTO required a completely different approach. Where the Lusso demanded elegance, the GTO needed to convey purpose, aggression and technological innovation. Every lighting decision was focused on emphasising the muscular stance and iconic proportions that have made the GTO such a revered model among Ferrari enthusiasts.

More Than a Marque – The Story Behind Ferrari

Spending a week surrounded by some of Ferrari's greatest creations inevitably leads you to reflect on the remarkable history behind the famous Prancing Horse.
Few automotive brands have achieved the status that Ferrari enjoys today. It is a name recognised far beyond the world of motorsport and performance cars, representing a unique blend of engineering excellence, Italian craftsmanship and racing heritage.

Interestingly, the Ferrari name itself originates from the Italian word ferraro, meaning "blacksmith", derived from the Latin word ferrum, meaning iron. A fitting origin for a company that would go on to forge some of the most celebrated automobiles ever created. Of course, Ferrari is perhaps best known for its iconic Prancing Horse emblem. The famous symbol has its roots in the First World War and originally appeared on the aircraft of legendary Italian fighter pilot Francesco Baracca. Following his death, Baracca's family encouraged Enzo Ferrari to adopt the horse as a symbol of good fortune. It has remained at the heart of Ferrari's identity ever since.

Then there is the unmistakable red. Today, Ferrari and Rosso Corsa are virtually inseparable, but the colour was not originally a styling choice. In the early years of Grand Prix racing, international regulations assigned specific colours to competing nations, with red designated to Italy. While many manufacturers later moved away from their national racing colours, Ferrari embraced its heritage and transformed Rosso Corsa into one of the most recognisable colours in automotive history.

Ferrari's story has always been deeply connected to motorsport. In fact, it remains the only Formula One constructor to have competed in every single season since the championship began in 1950. That continuous pursuit of performance has shaped every road car the company has produced. The influence of racing extends beyond the vehicles themselves. Ferrari remains one of the very few manufacturers to test its road and race cars on a dedicated private circuit. The famous Fiorano test track, opened in 1972, was built specifically to allow engineers and drivers to develop vehicles under demanding conditions, with corners designed to replicate some of the most challenging sections of Formula One circuits around the world.

Throughout its history, Ferrari has also produced stories that have become part of automotive folklore. One of the most remarkable involves the Enzo. Originally limited to just 399 examples, Ferrari later built a special 400th car which was donated to Pope John Paul II. The vehicle was subsequently auctioned, raising significant funds for humanitarian aid following the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami. Even Ferrari's modern evolution has generated headlines. For decades, company executives publicly insisted that Ferrari would never produce an SUV. Yet changing customer expectations ultimately led to the introduction of the Purosangue in 2022, proving that even the most traditional manufacturers must occasionally embrace change.

What has never changed, however, is Ferrari's ability to create cars that stir emotion. Whether it's a classic V12 grand tourer, a championship-winning Formula One car or a modern hypercar, every Ferrari carries the same DNA — a relentless pursuit of performance combined with a passion for design that few manufacturers can match.

Looking around the studio at the cars assembled before us, it was impossible not to appreciate that each vehicle represented a chapter in that remarkable story.

Ferrari 812 Competizione – The Last Great V12

The Ferrari 812 Competizione represents the pinnacle of naturally aspirated front-engine V12 performance. Producing one of the most exhilarating engine notes ever created, the Competizione pushes Ferrari's engineering expertise to remarkable levels. Its 9,500rpm redline is a reminder of an era that is becoming increasingly rare in the automotive world.

Visually, the car is every bit as dramatic as its performance figures suggest. Complex aerodynamic details, carbon fibre elements and aggressive bodywork demanded highly controlled lighting to reveal every surface and texture. The result is a machine that looks every bit as extreme as it feels.

Ferrari Monza SP1 – A Modern Automotive Sculpture

Few cars stop people in their tracks quite like the Monza SP1. Part of Ferrari's exclusive Icona programme, the SP1 pays homage to the open-top racing barchettas of the 1950s while incorporating state-of-the-art engineering and aerodynamics. With no conventional windscreen and a single-seat configuration, the SP1 is as much an artistic statement as it is a performance car.

Photographically, it presented one of the most fascinating challenges of the entire project. Every angle revealed a new shape, a new reflection and a new opportunity to highlight the remarkable design language that makes the Monza so unique.

LaFerrari – The Hybrid Revolution

When Ferrari introduced LaFerrari, it fundamentally changed perceptions of hybrid performance. Combining a naturally aspirated V12 with Formula One-derived KERS technology, LaFerrari demonstrated that electrification could enhance excitement rather than diminish it. The car's dramatic design reflects its extraordinary engineering. Every panel, vent and aerodynamic surface exists for a reason. In the studio, the objective was to capture that fusion of beauty and innovation, creating images that highlighted both the elegance and technical sophistication of Ferrari's flagship hybrid hypercar.

Enzo – A Turning Point in Ferrari History

Named after Ferrari's founder, the Enzo represented a pivotal moment for the company. Introduced in the early 2000s, it embraced advanced electronics, carbon fibre construction and Formula One-inspired paddle-shift technology to create one of the most influential supercars of its generation. Its sharp, purposeful design remains instantly recognisable more than two decades later. Photographing the Enzo meant emphasising its technical precision and futuristic character, qualities that still make it feel remarkably modern today.

Ferrari F40 – The Ultimate Legend

For many enthusiasts, the Ferrari F40 is the ultimate Ferrari. Built to celebrate Ferrari's 40th anniversary and famously the last model personally approved by Enzo Ferrari himself, the F40 remains one of the most celebrated performance cars ever produced. Raw, uncompromising and brutally focused, it became the first production car to exceed 200mph.

Standing beside the F40 in the studio is a special experience. There is an unmistakable aura surrounding the car that transcends its specifications and achievements. The challenge was to create images worthy of that legacy, revealing the purposeful aggression and iconic silhouette that have captivated enthusiasts for generations.

Ferrari F50 – Formula One for the Road

Completing the collection was the remarkable Ferrari F50. Created to celebrate Ferrari's 50th anniversary, the F50 took Formula One technology and translated it into a road-going supercar unlike anything seen before. Its carbon-fibre chassis and V12 engine, derived directly from Ferrari's Formula One programme, delivered an experience that was astonishingly close to that of a racing car. The F50's exposed engineering and dramatic proportions made it a fascinating subject to photograph, providing the perfect finale to an extraordinary collection.

Capturing the Soul of Ferrari

Looking back on the project, what stands out most is not simply the value or rarity of the cars. It is the stories they tell. Each Ferrari represents a milestone in automotive history. Each reflects a different era of engineering, design and innovation. Together they form a timeline of one of the most influential automotive manufacturers the world has ever known.

As photographers, our responsibility is to go beyond documenting these vehicles. Our job is to reveal their personality, their character and the emotional connection they create.
Over the course of the shoot, every lighting setup, every camera position and every creative decision was driven by that goal.

To capture not just what these Ferrari legends look like.
But what they feel like.

Behind the Scenes

Creating a great image is a journey, and that often starts in studio with a lot of cables, lights and a whole load of other weird and wonderful stuff that most people never get to see. These images hopefully give you a little insight into what a professional commercial shoot actually looks like behind the scenes in real life.

Personally I love to work in studio, it is in many ways my cathedral where I get to paint what is in my imagination using lighting.

Working with premium automotive brands always presents an exciting opportunity to create car photography that not only showcases a vehicle but also communicates the values, design philosophy and personality behind it. My work with Lexus UK has been a particularly rewarding example of this over recent years.

We first began working together several years ago when I was commissioned to photograph the Lexus RC300h F Sport Black Edition in the studio. That project focused heavily on precision lighting, form and detail, allowing me to create a series of images that highlighted the vehicle's craftsmanship and distinctive design language. Following the success of that assignment, I was delighted to be invited back for a second project, this time photographing the Lexus UX 250h F Sport on location.

Unlike the controlled environment of a studio, this shoot required a completely different approach. The objective was to create a lifestyle-focused collection of imagery that would position the vehicle within a premium residential setting while maintaining the high-end visual standards expected from a luxury automotive brand.

Finding the Right Location

Location selection plays a critical role in any automotive photography project. The environment surrounding a vehicle becomes an extension of the story being told and can significantly influence how the final imagery is perceived. This particular campaign was aimed at the younger demographic buyer and the style of the house to be used was very important.

A carefully selected London house location was chosen to provide the perfect backdrop for the Lexus UX 250h F Sport. The architecture offered clean contemporary lines, elegant textures and a sense of modern luxury that complemented the design language of the vehicle itself. This was an important factor for the client who wanted to shoot in London but had a very tight brief for the over all look and feel of the house. When photographing premium brand cars, it's essential that the surroundings enhance rather than distract from the subject. Every element within the frame needs to work harmoniously together. The location allowed us to create a series of photographic assets that felt sophisticated and aspirational whilst remaining both authentic and believable.

Over the last 20 years I have worked with many car manufacturer brands and clients, each one has a very distinct set of ‘brand guidelines’ that are crucial to maintain a flow and consistency through all their marketing and advertising material as much of this will be created by numerous commercial car photographers across many continents.

Showcasing Modern Hybrid Technology

The Lexus UX 250h represents an important part of Lexus' commitment to innovative hybrid technology. As a self-charging hybrid powered by fourth-generation hybrid technology, the vehicle combines efficiency with refinement and everyday usability. One of the challenges with automotive photography is visually communicating more than simply the physical appearance of a vehicle. The imagery needs to suggest the lifestyle, engineering excellence and ownership experience associated with the product.

For this shoot, my aim was to create photographs that reflected the modern and progressive nature of the UX 250h. Through careful composition, controlled lighting and thoughtful use of the location, I wanted to produce images that conveyed a sense of innovation and premium quality without appearing overly staged or artificial.

Managing Light and Reflections

As with any automotive assignment, controlling reflections was one of the most important aspects of the shoot.

Modern vehicle surfaces are highly reflective, and every panel effectively acts as a mirror. Successful automotive photography requires a detailed understanding of how light interacts with paintwork, glass and body contours. Small changes in camera position or lighting can dramatically alter the appearance of a vehicle.

Throughout the day I carefully worked the vehicle around the location, taking advantage of changing natural light conditions whilst also employing specialist automotive photography techniques to maintain clean reflections and strong body definition. The goal was to ensure every line and surface of the UX 250h was presented at its very best.

The distinctive spindle grille, sculpted bodywork and premium detailing all needed to be clearly visible whilst preserving a natural and believable feel to the imagery.

Creating Content That Reflects the Lexus Brand

One of the most important aspects of commercial photography is understanding the brand behind the product. Every manufacturer has its own visual identity and every image created needs to align with that identity. Lexus has built its reputation on quality, refinement, innovation and attention to detail. Those values influenced every decision made throughout the shoot, from camera angles and lens selection through to composition and post-production.

The resulting image collection delivered a blend of hero vehicle photography, environmental lifestyle imagery and detailed close-up shots that provided Lexus UK with a versatile set of assets for marketing and communications purposes. This photography was then used across multiple channels by Lexus in the UK and Europe.

Delivering Premium Automotive Imagery

Projects such as this demonstrate why specialist automotive photography requires far more than simply photographing a car. Success comes from understanding vehicle design, controlling reflections, selecting appropriate locations and creating imagery that supports a brand's wider marketing objectives.

Working with Lexus UK has been a pleasure, and this project was another opportunity to combine technical automotive photography expertise with creative storytelling. The Lexus UX 250h F Sport proved to be an outstanding subject, and the carefully selected London location provided the ideal setting to showcase both the vehicle's premium design and its forward-thinking hybrid technology. As a commercial automotive photographer, assignments like this continue to remind me why I enjoy working within the automotive sector. Every vehicle presents its own challenges, and every project provides an opportunity to create imagery that helps a brand connect with its audience in a meaningful and visually engaging way.

For commercial clients, consistency is every bit as important as creativity. One of the questions I am often asked, particularly by photographers who are moving into commercial work, is whether I spend a significant amount of time retouching images in Photoshop. Most of the work, especially when shooting a car photography based series of images ‘in studio’ is completed at the actual lighting and shooting stage of the process. Of course there will always be slight refinements required at the post edit stage, I have written a small guide below to help with one common adjustment process that I often need to use, small adjustments in tone to keep images accurate and also tie a series together consistently.

Whilst Photoshop undoubtedly plays an important role in my professional workflow, I would never describe myself as a retoucher. My background and passion have always centred around creating the image as accurately and effectively as possible in camera. Years spent photographing everything from high-performance automotive projects for clients, through to large-scale transport and industrial commissions have taught me that the more control you can achieve during the shoot itself, the more efficient and consistent the entire production process becomes. That said, post-production remains an essential stage of commercial photography. Not because we are trying to rescue images, but because we are refining them. More importantly, we are ensuring that a complete image set works together as a cohesive visual collection.

When a manufacturer commissions a campaign featuring multiple vehicles, or a transport company requires an extensive library of imagery for marketing and advertising purposes, every photograph needs to sit comfortably alongside the next. Tonal values, contrast, colour rendition and overall visual balance all need to feel unified. If one image drifts away from the others, even subtly, the entire collection can begin to feel disjointed.

This is rarely a major issue during studio productions. In a controlled environment I have complete authority over the lighting. Every light source is positioned with purpose, every reflection is managed, and every aspect of the image is carefully constructed. The result is a level of consistency that is relatively straightforward to maintain. The challenge often comes later.

When working through a series of images during post-production, there are occasions where adjustments need to be made to improve tonal balance, recover detail or refine contrast. However, these corrections can sometimes create a problem of their own. In making a tonal adjustment, you may inadvertently alter the colour values within that same area of the image.

For many subjects this may not be immediately noticeable. For commercial work, however, particularly where brand colours or product finishes are critical, even a subtle shift can become a significant issue.

A perfect example came during a recent Ferrari Monza project. More images from this shoot can be viewed in our Automotive Portfolio.

At first glance, silver might seem like one of the easiest colours to work with. In reality, it can be one of the most unforgiving. Metallic silver surfaces are highly reflective and incredibly responsive to surrounding light conditions. Small changes in contrast or luminosity can quickly introduce unwanted colour shifts. Areas that should remain neutral can suddenly appear warmer, cooler, slightly blue or slightly magenta.

When viewing a single image in isolation, those changes may seem insignificant. Place that image alongside ten others from the same shoot, however, and inconsistencies immediately begin to reveal themselves.

This becomes particularly important when producing image sets for manufacturers and commercial clients who demand accuracy. The vehicle needs to look like the same vehicle throughout the entire collection. The paint tone must remain consistent. The visual identity of the product must remain intact.

Over the years I have developed a number of techniques to help maintain that consistency, but one method in particular has become a regular part of my workflow whenever I need to make tonal adjustments without affecting core colour values. This is often critical in commercial and product photography and is something that many can often overlook.

I often refer to it simply as the "Flat Curve" technique.

What makes this approach so useful is its ability to separate tonal correction from colour influence. Rather than making an adjustment that simultaneously impacts both luminosity and colour information, this method allows you to focus specifically on the tonal characteristics of an image while preserving the underlying colour relationships.

The result is a much greater degree of control. It enables subtle refinements to shadows, mid-tones and highlights whilst maintaining the integrity of the original colour palette, for automotive photography, transport imagery and product work where colour accuracy is critical, that level of precision can make a significant difference. Perhaps more importantly, it provides consistency. When working through dozens, sometimes hundreds, of images from a commercial assignment, having a reliable method that produces predictable results is invaluable. It reduces the likelihood of introducing colour discrepancies and helps ensure that the final image collection maintains a coherent and professional appearance.

As with any workflow technique, I would strongly recommend experimenting with it yourself. Open a variety of images and test how it behaves across different subjects and lighting conditions. You'll quickly gain an understanding of where it excels and how it might fit into your own editing process.

If you find it useful, one of the simplest ways to integrate it into your workflow is to record it as a Photoshop Action. Having the setup available at the click of a button can save considerable time, particularly when processing larger image sets. The key point to remember is that every image will require its own adjustment values, so I generally recommend recording the Action only up to the stage immediately before the actual tonal corrections are made. This provides a ready-made framework that can be applied instantly while still allowing the flexibility to tailor the final adjustments to the specific requirements of each image.

The Method

Step 1 - Create a Hue Saturation Adjustment layer that will show in the layers stack above your original image. Once done, open this and take the saturation all the way down to zero. 
Now make the blend mode for that layer > Soft Light 

Step 2 - Then make a Curves adjustment above that, make sure that you 'clip' it to the layer below (The Hue Adjustment one) by clicking on it while holding the ALT key (Mac). 
A small arrow will appear on the left of the layer to show its clipped to the layer underneath and will only affect that. 

Step 3 - Open the curves adjustment layer and you are going to grab the left and right far points of the curve and move them so that you have a flat line in the middle of the graph. 
You can now use the flat line to make small changes to the brightness tonally along from the darkest point (far left) to the lightest point (far right)

Step 4 - One way of doing this for certain points could be to use the 'Click and drag' option that is on the curves adjustment window (just below the word pre-set, the hand icon with the up and down arrows on it) Click this and then take the eyedropper over onto your image, select a tonal range you want to modify and its tonal value will appear as a dot along your curves adjustment graph line. Then you can pull this point on the graph and make your changes. Any changes that you make will adjust this tonal area. 

Step 5 - You may wish to click several points along the flat line before you start making adjustments if you wish the changes to be very localised and prevent the left and right of your curve line bending in other directions as you pull it around.

Step 6 - Finally note that the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer has a mask, and you may want to 'Invert' this so that it turns black (Click on mask and hit CMD I)

Step 7 – You can then use a white brush to 'paint in' the tonal changes you have made but keep them to localised areas on the image. 

What you now have is the ability to make changes to that curve line at any points along it and those changes will affect the tone, brightness, darkness etc but will NOT have any effect on the colour of your original image.

Whether photographing transport fleets, industrial machinery, luxury automotive subjects or complex product commissions, maintaining colour consistency while refining tonal balance is something that I encounter on almost every project.

Often it is the smallest workflow improvements that deliver the greatest long-term benefits, and this is certainly one of those techniques.

Working inside live Search and Rescue operations demands something entirely different, a combination of operational understanding, safety awareness, trust and the ability to function seamlessly within highly disciplined environments where real-world emergencies unfold in real time.

For commercial photographer Tim Wallace, aviation photography has evolved far beyond simply photographing aircraft. Over many years he has built extensive operational experience working alongside HM Coastguard Search and Rescue teams, Bristow SAR operations and HEMS crews across the UK, documenting rescue aviation from within the heart of active tasking environments. Aircraft Built for Rescue

Working within Search and Rescue and HEMS environments has also provided Tim with extensive experience around some of the most advanced rescue helicopters operating anywhere in the world today. Over the years he has worked extensively around aircraft platforms including the Sikorsky S-92, Leonardo AW169, Airbus H135 and the Leonardo AW189, each aircraft specifically designed to perform within highly demanding operational conditions.

Every helicopter has its own personality, operational role and photographic challenge. Cabin space is often extremely restricted, communication between crew is constant and conditions can change rapidly once airborne. Lighting conditions inside rescue aircraft are rarely ideal and vibration, weather and operational movement all add further complexity when attempting to capture authentic imagery during live tasking. For Tim, this is where preparation and operational understanding become absolutely essential. Knowing where to position safely, understanding crew movement patterns and anticipating operational flow allows him to work efficiently without becoming an obstacle inside a fast-moving rescue environment.

One particularly significant chapter in UK SAR operations has been the transition from the Sikorsky S-92 platform to the Leonardo AW189 helicopter.

The AW189 is regarded as one of the most capable modern SAR helicopters in operation today, combining exceptional range, payload capability and agility. Built specifically to perform in harsh offshore and coastal conditions, it has become perfectly suited to the demanding UK Search and Rescue environment. Whether operating over the North Sea, mountainous regions or remote coastal terrain, the aircraft offers crews the flexibility and performance required to respond rapidly to a wide variety of rescue scenarios.

Photographing these helicopters during active operations provides an entirely different perspective from traditional aviation photography. The focus shifts away from static aircraft imagery and moves toward storytelling, documenting crews preparing equipment, pilots working through procedures, technical crew coordinating rescue systems and the atmosphere surrounding every launch. There is also an undeniable emotional intensity around Search and Rescue operations that naturally influences the imagery itself. These are not routine flights or commercial transport operations. Behind every launch is somebody in distress, often in extreme circumstances, and every crew member onboard understands the importance of the task ahead.

Tim’s work with HEMS and Air Ambulance operations has further strengthened this understanding of specialist aviation environments. Aircraft such as the Airbus H135 and Leonardo AW169 are widely used throughout emergency medical response operations and require strict adherence to aviation procedures and operational discipline at all times.

These are not compact sports cars positioned inside small studios with minimal lighting setups. The vehicles Tim regularly works with can weigh many tonnes, stretch over 11 metres in length and require an entirely different level of technical planning and execution.

Over the years, Tim has developed an international reputation for his ability to photograph large-scale commercial transport in both operational environments and highly controlled studio settings. The sheer size of many of the vehicles Tim photographs means only a very small number of facilities in the UK are physically capable of accommodating them. Access heights, floor loading capacities, turning circles and lighting rig infrastructure all become major considerations long before a camera is even lifted.

Through years of working within the transport sector, Tim has built strong relationships with specialist large-scale studios capable of handling these demanding productions. These purpose-built spaces allow heavy vehicles to be driven directly into fully controlled photographic environments, where every aspect of the image can be carefully engineered.

 Commercial vehicle photography at this level is about far more than simply recording what a vehicle looks like. For companies operating within highly competitive sectors, strong visual branding has become increasingly important. High-end photography helps organisations present their fleet, services and infrastructure with confidence and authority across websites, national campaigns, exhibitions, brochures and corporate communications. Projects like this continue to demonstrate how specialist photography can elevate industrial subjects far beyond simple technical documentation.

Standing inside a vast studio environment with multi-tonne vehicles positioned under carefully constructed lighting rigs is a reminder of just how ambitious modern commercial photography has become. The scale is immense, the process highly technical, and the margin for error exceptionally small — but the results can be visually extraordinary.

As a professional commercial photographer and documentary photographer, I am always looking to work on projects that have real meaning and purpose behind them, projects where the imagery is not simply decorative, but genuinely important to how an organisation communicates with people. this project has been exactly that.
MIB plays a hugely important role across the UK, supporting people affected by incidents involving uninsured and untraced drivers, while also working closely with the Police, insurers, and government agencies to help reduce uninsured driving nationwide. From the beginning, this project was never about producing a handful of standalone images. The objective was far bigger. MIB engaged me with the task of creating a consistent and cohesive body of commercial photography that would become the visual foundation of their brand-new website and future communications.

The project has involved extensive planning, collaboration, and documentary style photography shoots taking place across multiple locations around the country. Every shoot has needed to connect visually and emotionally with the next, ensuring that when all the imagery finally comes together it feels unified, authentic, and completely aligned with the organisation’s message and purpose. For me, consistency in commercial photography is one of the most important elements of brand communication. Strong imagery is not only about creating photographs that look impressive individually, but also about creating an entire visual language that audiences immediately recognise and connect with, and that has very much been central to every stage of this production.

Building a New Visual Presence

When I first began discussions with MIB management teams about the project, it became clear very quickly that this was a substantial undertaking.
The organisation was in the process of developing a completely new website experience designed to explain more clearly who they are, what they do, and how they support people affected by uninsured and hit and run drivers. The challenge was not simply to photograph offices or produce corporate headshots.

The challenge was to visually communicate trust, professionalism, support, empathy, operational capability, and public service, all while ensuring the photography remained natural, believable, and human. That is where documentary photography becomes incredibly valuable within commercial projects.

Rather than creating heavily staged or artificial scenes, my approach was to build imagery around genuine environments, real operational scenarios, and authentic moments. This creates photographs that feel credible and relatable, particularly important for organisations like MIB where public confidence and clarity are essential.

The planning process behind shoots like this is extensive. Every photograph has to serve a purpose. Some images are designed to communicate reassurance and support for victims. Others need to reflect collaboration between MIB and law enforcement agencies. Some need to demonstrate modern infrastructure and operational capability, while others focus on people and the human side of the organisation. A huge amount of consideration also goes into maintaining consistency throughout a project of this scale.

When a website contains photography created over many months, across different locations, environments, and lighting conditions, consistency becomes one of the hardest things to achieve successfully. The visual tone, lighting style, colour balance, composition, and overall feel all need to align seamlessly.

As the project developed, shoots took place in multiple locations around the UK, each with its own logistical challenges and operational requirements. Some locations involved working directly alongside Police operations and enforcement activity connected to uninsured driving initiatives. Others focused more on the corporate and customer support side of the organisation. Having previously worked extensively alongside Police units and operational teams, I understand the importance of preparation, flexibility, and professionalism in fast moving environments. The ability to adapt quickly while still maintaining creative consistency is essential on productions like this.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project has been seeing how invested everyone involved has been in getting the imagery right, from senior management through to operational staff, there has been a genuine understanding that photography is not simply an add on element, It is a core part of how the organisation presents itself publicly.

Good commercial photography shapes perception. it influences trust. It helps explain complex services in a more human and accessible way.
That is particularly important for an organisation like MIB, whose work often involves supporting people during stressful and difficult situations following road traffic incidents.

The imagery therefore needed to strike a careful balance. Professional but approachable, authoritative but human, documentary led but visually refined. Throughout the production process I worked closely with the MIB teams to ensure every shoot aligned with the wider creative direction of the new platform. Website designers also played a key role in helping shape how imagery would integrate across the final site experience, ensuring that the visual storytelling remained consistent throughout the customer journey.
From a commercial photographer’s perspective, projects like this are incredibly satisfying because they demonstrate the real value of strategic photography.

New Site Launch

The new MIB website officially launched on 20th May this year and it has already received extremely positive feedback. Seeing the final photography integrated into the completed platform is rewarding. Large scale projects like this often take many months of planning, shooting, editing, and collaboration before the final result becomes visible publicly. During production you are often focused on individual shoot days, specific content requirements, logistics, and deadlines, so finally seeing everything come together as one cohesive visual identity is always a significant moment.

The new platform has been designed to communicate MIB’s role more clearly and accessibly, while also modernising the organisation’s digital presence. The photography plays a central role within that experience. One of the key goals throughout the production was to ensure the imagery never felt disconnected or generic.

Too often corporate websites rely on heavily staged stock style imagery that lacks authenticity and fails to connect emotionally with audiences. From the outset, MIB wanted something far more genuine and representative of the real people, partnerships, and operational work behind the organisation. That documentary led approach became one of the defining visual characteristics of the project.

The final photography now helps guide users through the site experience, supporting content across a wide range of sections and helping create a far more engaging and human online presence. Projects of this scale also highlight how much commercial photography has evolved over recent years.

Clients are increasingly looking for photography that does more than simply illustrate a page. They want imagery that actively supports brand identity, strengthens trust, improves user engagement, and communicates values. This project has been an excellent example of that shift.

The photography needed to work across:

• Service information pages
• Public information content
• Police partnership communications
• Operational support messaging
• Brand storytelling
• Future marketing and communications material

Creating imagery flexible enough to support all these areas while maintaining a consistent visual identity is a major undertaking. It requires not only strong photography skills, but also a deep understanding of branding, communication strategy, production planning, and visual storytelling. As a commercial photographer, these are exactly the types of projects I enjoy most. Projects where photography becomes part of something much larger.

Projects where the imagery genuinely matters. The positive response to the launch has already reinforced how important that collaborative approach was throughout production. It has been fantastic to see the photography helping shape a modern, confident, and approachable new visual identity for the organisation.

Projects like this reinforce why I remain so passionate about commercial and documentary photography. Photography has the ability to do far more than simply create attractive visuals. At its best, it helps organisations communicate more clearly, connect more effectively with audiences, and tell stories in a way that feels genuine and human.

Working with MIB has been an opportunity to do exactly that. As the project continues to develop, I am looking forward to producing further imagery that continues to support the organisation’s evolving brand and communications. For me, the most successful commercial photography projects are always the ones built on collaboration, trust, and consistency. This project has been a perfect example of all three.

There are some car photography projects that stay with you long after the shoot is complete. My work photographing the Peugeot Fractal Concept Car at the Peugeot Design Centre in Paris was certainly one of those projects. The first time that I saw the vehicle was in Peugeots studio that they have within their Paris Design Centre. It was 2 months ahead of the actual shoot week, but I needed to take a flight across from England so that I could see first-hand what I would be shooting for a week. The reason being that all concept cars are under strict security before their launch and that means no images on emails or even graphics and drawings, you need to travel and gain entry into their secure area at the design centre.

Seeing it in studio it was clear that this was not simply another concept car built to showcase future technology. The Fractal represented something much more ambitious, it was a statement of intent from Peugeot about emotion, design, sound, innovation and the future direction of the brand itself.

As a commercial car photographer, projects like this are exactly why I love what I do. Working with global automotive brands is never simply about producing attractive imagery. It is about understanding the identity of the brand, understanding the visual language that already exists around it, and then creating photography that strengthens and expands that identity across every platform where the imagery will be seen.

For Peugeot, consistency is absolutely critical. The imagery produced for a worldwide concept car launch is distributed globally across press releases, automotive media, advertising, digital campaigns, editorial features and social channels. Every photograph has to feel aligned with the wider brand presence and blend seamlessly into the existing visual ecosystem already associated with the company online. That level of consistency only comes through trust, preparation and a deep understanding of how automotive photography supports modern branding.

I have always enjoyed working with Peugeot because their design team has a very strong creative vision. Everything is centred around emotion and visual impact. That immediately aligned with my own photographic style and approach to commercial automotive photography. From the earliest conversations surrounding the Fractal project it became very clear that this was going to be a highly creative collaboration with a team that genuinely values visual storytelling.

The project itself was produced at the Peugeot Design Centre in Paris, working alongside the highly experienced team at Cream Production. Having a production company of that calibre involved makes an enormous difference on projects of this scale. Large international automotive campaigns involve many moving parts, from logistics and lighting requirements through to timing, vehicle preparation, approvals and delivery schedules. When all of those elements are managed professionally it allows the creative team to focus completely on producing the strongest imagery possible.

Groundbreaking Sound Design

The most notable feature of the Fractal is how sound design informs its entire physical and psychological experience.
Peugeot partnered with audio specialists Focal to build a sound system that creates a spatial audio illusion, directing sound in ways that benefit the driver.
Exterior Sound: Because EVs are notoriously quiet at low speeds, the concept generates its own signature external sound to alert pedestrians.
Tactile Bass: The seats feature tactile bass systems that send low-frequency vibrations through the body, fully immersing the driver in the audio.

Interior & Technology
Over 80% of the interior is created using 3D-printed components, many of which were designed mathematically to mimic the acoustic chambers of recording studios.
i-Cockpit: The dashboard features a customisable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 7.7-inch head-up display.
Steering Wheel: The compact steering wheel incorporates integrated touchpads that control the car's infotainment and navigation functions

Shoot Preparation

One of the biggest misconceptions people often have about commercial car photography is that the work begins when the camera comes out. In reality, most of the important work happens long before the first frame is ever captured. For a worldwide automotive campaign there is a huge amount of preparation involved. Every detail has to be carefully considered well in advance because once the vehicle is on set and the studio team is assembled, time becomes incredibly valuable. Good preparation allows the entire production to flow efficiently and creatively during the actual shoot days.

With the Peugeot Fractal project, the preparation stage was extensive. The vehicle itself was a one-off concept car with a highly sculptural design language and a very distinctive visual personality. My job was not simply to document the car; it was to create photography that enhanced the emotion already designed into it by the Peugeot design team.

That process starts with understanding the clients extensive shooting brief before any lighting equipment requirements are planned. I then spend time analysing the surfaces, reflections, body lines and proportions of the car itself. Concept vehicles are often incredibly complex to photograph because they are designed to push boundaries. They feature unusual materials, aggressive sculpting, intricate textures and experimental surfaces that can react unpredictably under studio lighting. The Fractal was especially interesting because it combined sharp futuristic styling with incredibly detailed surface textures and layered materials. Every angle revealed new design elements. As a photographer you have to understand how to control light in a way that reveals those details without overwhelming the overall form of the vehicle.

Another major aspect of preparation involved visual consistency. Peugeot already has a highly established visual identity across its automotive campaigns. When imagery is distributed globally it needs to sit naturally alongside other brand content across websites, press materials and advertising campaigns. Achieving that consistency requires careful planning around lighting style, tonal balance, composition and visual mood. This is where trust between client and photographer becomes extremely important. Global automotive brands need confidence that the photographer understands not only how to shoot cars beautifully, but also how to create imagery that strengthens the overall brand presence. Over time that trust allows for a far more collaborative and creative process.

The preparation stage also involved close collaboration with the production team in Paris. Cream Production handled the logistics with tremendous professionalism and creativity. Large automotive shoots involve numerous departments working together simultaneously, from design and vehicle preparation through to art direction, technical support and postproduction planning. Having an organised and experienced production team creates the environment where creativity can truly flourish. From my perspective, preparation is what gives you freedom during the shoot itself. Once the technical considerations are resolved and the visual direction is fully understood, you can concentrate entirely on shaping the emotion and atmosphere within the photography.

Peugeot Fractal, A Vision of Future Automotive Design

The Peugeot Fractal was one of the most visually striking concept cars I have photographed. It was designed not simply as a car, but as a complete sensory experience. Peugeot approached the project with a very clear ambition to explore how sound, texture, technology and emotion could work together within future automotive design.

Visually, the Fractal immediately commands attention. Its low stance, sharp surfaces and dramatic proportions create a very aggressive yet refined presence. The design feels futuristic without becoming detached from reality, which is often a difficult balance to achieve with concept vehicles. One of the aspects I found most interesting about the Fractal was the level of detail throughout the vehicle. Every surface appeared carefully considered. The textures, lighting elements and sculpted forms all contributed to a sense of movement and energy even when the car was stationary.

Photographing a concept car like this requires a very different mindset compared to shooting production vehicles. With production cars the focus is often on accessibility and broad commercial appeal. With concept cars the objective shifts towards highlighting innovation, experimentation and emotional impact. The Fractal featured incredibly complex detailing throughout both the exterior and interior. The cockpit design in particular felt almost architectural in nature, with geometric forms and layered textures creating a highly immersive environment. From a photographic perspective this created huge opportunities to explore shape, shadow and light in a more artistic and cinematic way.

Lighting plays an enormous role in automotive photography, especially when working with concept vehicles. The way reflections travel across a surface can dramatically alter how the design is perceived. My role was to sculpt the light carefully so that the strongest aspects of the design language were emphasised without losing subtlety or elegance. With the Fractal I wanted the imagery to feel powerful and refined at the same time. Peugeot places huge importance on emotion within its branding and design philosophy, so the photography needed to reflect that emotional connection rather than simply present technical documentation of the car.

One of the challenges with photographing highly reflective concept vehicles is maintaining control over every surface. Unlike many other forms of photography, automotive photography often involves shaping reflections just as much as shaping direct light. Every reflection tells part of the story. Every highlight guides the viewer’s eye through the image.The Fractal’s angular design and intricate surface detailing meant that precision was essential throughout the shoot. Small adjustments in lighting position or camera angle could dramatically change the visual balance of the image. This is where experience in commercial car photography becomes invaluable because understanding how automotive surfaces behave under studio lighting takes years of practice.

What I particularly enjoyed about the Fractal project was that it allowed for genuine creativity. Peugeot gave me the freedom to explore the emotional qualities of the car while still maintaining the visual consistency required for a worldwide campaign launch. That combination of trust and creative collaboration is always where the strongest automotive photography is created.

Behind The Scenes

Behind every polished automotive campaign image is an enormous amount of technical precision, teamwork and problem solving happening behind the scenes.

Studio automotive photography at this level is highly controlled. Every reflection, every highlight and every detail within the frame is carefully considered. Unlike location photography where you work with changing environmental conditions, studio photography allows you to build light piece by piece until the final image achieves exactly the desired mood and visual impact.

The Peugeot Design Centre in Paris provided an exceptional environment to work in. Shoots like this are often highly intensive, with long production days and constant refinements being made throughout the process. The atmosphere within the studio becomes incredibly collaborative because everybody involved is focused on achieving the strongest possible result for the client. A large part of automotive studio photography involves patience and precision. Lighting a concept car can sometimes take hours before a single final frame is captured. Every curve and surface reacts differently to light, particularly on vehicles with experimental materials and aggressive sculptural forms like the Fractal.

During the shoot we continually refined the lighting setup to enhance the shape and energy of the vehicle. Sometimes the smallest adjustment can completely transform how a body line flows through the frame. Automotive photography is often about subtlety and control rather than dramatic changes. Another important aspect behind the scenes is maintaining momentum and creative focus across the entire production. Large commercial shoots can easily become overly technical if the creative direction is not constantly protected. My role as photographer is not only to manage the technical execution, but also to keep the emotional quality of the imagery at the centre of the process.

The collaboration with the Peugeot design team was extremely valuable throughout the shoot. They understand the vehicle better than anyone and their input helped ensure that the photography highlighted the key design features and emotional characteristics that defined the Fractal concept. What I always enjoy about projects like this is the shared sense of purpose across the entire team. Everyone involved understands that the imagery being created will become part of the public identity of the vehicle itself. These photographs are often the very first way the world experiences a new concept car, so the responsibility is significant.

In today’s automotive industry the role of photography has become more important than ever. A single image may appear across global media platforms within minutes of release. It has to capture attention instantly, communicate the design philosophy clearly and reinforce the identity of the brand consistently across every market. That is why trust between client and photographer matters so much. Brands like Peugeot need confidence that the imagery being produced will not only look visually striking, but also support the wider commercial and branding objectives of the campaign. Consistency, quality and emotional connection all become equally important.

For me personally, the Peugeot Fractal project was an opportunity to combine technical precision with creative storytelling. It represented exactly the kind of automotive photography work that I am passionate about, creating imagery that goes beyond simply showing a vehicle and instead builds atmosphere, emotion and visual identity around it. Working with global automotive brands continues to be one of the most rewarding aspects of my career as a commercial car photographer. Every project brings new creative challenges, new collaborations and new opportunities to push visual storytelling further.

The Peugeot Fractal remains one of the standout concept car projects I have had the privilege to photograph, and it perfectly demonstrates how powerful automotive photography can become when strong design, creative trust and technical excellence all come together.

One of the questions I get asked most often is what makes a long-term commercial photography relationship successful. For me, the answer has always been consistency.
Not simply consistency in producing high quality imagery, but consistency in understanding a client’s brand, maintaining visual standards over many years and creating photography that continues to evolve creatively while still feeling completely aligned with the identity of the business. That has been a huge part of my working relationship with Royal Terberg Group over the last 12 years creating photography assets for the group of both truck photography and both operations and engineering photography.

During that time, I have produced commercial truck photography for multiple divisions across the group throughout the UK and Europe, photographing everything from specialist engineering and manufacturing operations to highly crafted campaign imagery of Terberg’s vehicles working within demanding industrial environments.

The projects have taken me from operational sites throughout the UK to Terberg’s headquarters and manufacturing centres in the Netherlands, as well as major industrial environments such as the Port of Rotterdam, where some of the most powerful and visually dynamic truck photography can be created. What has always impressed me about Terberg is the depth of engineering knowledge and heritage that exists throughout the business. Established in 1869, the company has built a global reputation for designing and manufacturing specialist vehicles that operate in some of the harshest and most demanding industrial sectors imaginable.

Their vehicles are used within logistics, terminal operations, industrial transport, waste management and environmental services, with the business also continuing to expand its development of electric and low emission vehicles as industries move towards more sustainable operational solutions.

For me as a commercial truck photographer, that presents both a creative opportunity and a responsibility. The imagery must communicate engineering quality, strength and reliability while also feeling modern, engaging and commercially valuable. The photography cannot simply record what the vehicle looks like. It must communicate confidence in the brand itself. That becomes even more important when you are creating photography for a global company where the imagery is used internationally across websites, digital marketing, advertising campaigns, technical literature, exhibitions, dealer networks and corporate communications.

Images created today may sit alongside photography captured several years ago, viewed together by customers in different countries as part of one continuous visual identity. Because of that, consistency becomes incredibly important. Every assignment has to feel connected to the wider Terberg brand language while still pushing the photography forward creatively and technically. That balance is something I have worked hard to maintain throughout our relationship over the years. The consistency also extends beyond the imagery itself. Understanding how Terberg operates, how their teams work and what matters to them commercially allows projects to run smoothly and efficiently. Over time you develop a much deeper understanding of the business and that trust becomes an essential part of producing strong commercial photography.

Working with Terberg

 Trust plays a huge role in commercial photography, especially when working with large international engineering businesses. When a client commissions photography that will represent their brand globally, they need complete confidence that the photographer understands not only how to create strong imagery but also how that imagery supports the wider commercial objectives of the company. That trust is something that develops over time.

 Working with Terberg over such a long period means there is now a very strong understanding between us. Their teams know exactly how I approach projects, how I work on location and how I manage the process from planning through to final delivery. Equally, I understand the standards they expect and how important visual consistency is across every division and territory. Commercial truck photography at this level involves far more preparation than many people might imagine. Long before any camera equipment comes out, there is usually extensive planning taking place behind the scenes. That can involve reviewing the purpose of the shoot, understanding how the imagery will be used globally, assessing locations, coordinating access permissions, reviewing operational schedules and planning how to work around active engineering or logistics environments safely and efficiently.

 Lighting and weather conditions also play a major role, particularly when photographing large industrial vehicles outdoors. Unlike studio photography where conditions can be completely controlled, location-based truck photography often involves adapting quickly to changing environments while still maintaining a highly polished final result.

One shoot that perfectly reflects this process was photographing Terberg port tractors within the Port of Rotterdam. From a distance it might sound relatively straightforward, photograph a specialist vehicle in a busy industrial location. In reality, shoots like this require considerable preparation and coordination.

 The Port of Rotterdam is one of the largest and busiest logistics environments in Europe, with constant movement of containers, shipping operations and heavy transport activity taking place around the clock. Access restrictions can be tight and vehicle positioning often has to work around active operational schedules with limited time available.

 In environments like this I am constantly observing how the light moves across the location, how the background elements interact with the vehicle and how best to position the truck so that the scale and atmosphere of the environment support the final image rather than distract from it. What I enjoy most is finding ways to make the imagery feel authentic and cinematic at the same time. I never want the photographs to feel staged or artificial. I want them to feel rooted in the real world that these vehicles operate within every day. The industrial surroundings, the scale of the infrastructure and the energy of the working environment all become part of the visual story.

That is often where the strongest truck photography is created, when the vehicle and environment work together naturally. Another important part of working with Terberg is understanding that the imagery often has to serve multiple purposes simultaneously. A single shoot may produce photography for corporate communications, website content, social media campaigns, product launches, press releases and wider international marketing activity. Because of that, I am always thinking beyond a single image. I am considering how the full body of work will function together as a consistent visual asset library for the business over many years.

Shooting The Operation

One of the things I genuinely enjoy about working with Terberg is the sheer diversity of the projects and environments I get to photograph. Over the years I have worked across vehicle manufacturing facilities in Holland, engineering and assembly operations throughout the UK, specialist vehicle divisions, waste management operations, logistics hubs and major industrial transport locations across Europe. Every environment brings completely different creative and technical challenges.

Manufacturing facilities require a careful balance between documenting genuine operational processes while still creating imagery that feels visually refined and commercially strong. These environments are often busy, highly active spaces where production cannot simply stop for photography. That means working efficiently, understanding operational flow and being able to adapt quickly while still maintaining a high visual standard. Studio based truck photography presents an entirely different challenge. Large commercial vehicles are incredibly difficult subjects to photograph well in studio conditions. Reflections across bodywork, shape definition, surface texture and lighting control all become critical elements. Every panel, contour and line needs to be carefully considered so that the final imagery feels precise and premium without losing the functional engineering character of the vehicle. Location photography adds another layer again. Working outdoors across industrial locations means dealing constantly with weather, light changes, operational constraints and access limitations while still trying to create imagery that feels calm, composed and intentional.

What ties all of these shoots together is the objective behind them. The goal is always to create photography that strengthens the Terberg brand.

Commercial truck photography is often underestimated creatively. In reality, producing high quality imagery of industrial vehicles requires the same level of precision, planning and visual understanding as high end automotive advertising photography. Every detail contributes to how the final image feels. The position of the vehicle, the quality of light, the balance of the composition and the relationship between the machine and its environment all influence how the brand is perceived by the viewer. A truck designed for demanding industrial operations still deserves to be photographed with sophistication and care. That philosophy has shaped every Terberg project I have worked on.

 Whether I am photographing refuse collection vehicles for the environmental division, documenting engineering teams inside manufacturing facilities in the Netherlands or creating campaign imagery for electric terminal tractors, the aim is always to produce photography that feels strong, consistent and commercially valuable. The imagery needs to communicate engineering credibility while also capturing attention emotionally. It needs to feel authentic but still visually elevated.

 Strong commercial photography builds confidence. It tells customers they are dealing with a company that values quality, precision and professionalism in every part of its operation. For a global engineering group like Terberg, maintaining that consistency across multiple countries and divisions is hugely important, and it is something we have continued to develop together over many years of collaboration.

For me, that is exactly what successful commercial photography relationships should be built on, trust, consistency, creativity and a shared commitment to quality.

Over the past twenty years as a commercial photographer I’ve been fortunate to work with some incredible clients and on some remarkable projects, but my work with BBC Studios and UKTV on the television series Warbird Workshop stands out as one of the most rewarding and demanding aviation photography projects I have undertaken.

At first glance, the assignment may appear to have been simply about photographing historic aircraft. In reality, it became a hugely complex nationwide production involving logistics, planning, location management, aircraft access, weather contingency, transport coordination, safety considerations and extremely tight production deadlines, all while delivering imagery that needed to feel cinematic, dramatic and worthy of the legendary aircraft themselves.

The brief from the BBC team was clear from the outset. The photography needed to support the launch and promotion of the television series internationally, work across television EPG placements, marketing campaigns, press releases and digital assets, while also visually reflecting the engineering passion and historical significance behind each aircraft featured in the programmes.

The scale of the project quickly became apparent. Over the course of eight months I travelled extensively across England photographing ten different aircraft at a range of locations including active airfields, museums, restoration facilities and private hangars. Every aircraft had its own story, its own personality and, importantly, its own logistical challenges.

What made the project particularly rewarding was that this was not simply a case of arriving and shooting. I became heavily involved in the planning and coordination of many of the shoots, working closely alongside the BBC production teams, aircraft owners, engineers and location staff to ensure that every production day ran efficiently and successfully.

The Responsibility Behind the Assignment

When a client such as BBC Studios entrusts you with a project of this scale, there is naturally a significant level of responsibility attached to it.

These aircraft are irreplaceable pieces of aviation history. Many are valued in the millions, several are still airworthy, and almost all are maintained by incredibly passionate teams who dedicate years of work to preserving them. Access is limited and opportunities to photograph them properly are often rare.

The BBC required photography that could not only document the aircraft accurately but elevate them visually in a way that suited the tone and ambition of the television series itself. The imagery needed to feel dramatic, immersive and authentic while still retaining the precision and clarity required for commercial and broadcast marketing use.

This is where my experience in commercial photography became such an important part of the project. Over two decades of working professionally across automotive, aviation and industrial sectors has taught me how to operate efficiently under pressure, adapt quickly to changing environments and consistently deliver imagery that aligns creatively with a client’s wider brand objectives. It is important sometimes that a suite of images all blend correctly with each other, there is a common style and feel, and that was the case here.

On projects like this, experience is not just about camera technique. It is about problem solving, communication, leadership, timing and maintaining calm when schedules become tight and circumstances change unexpectedly. There is always a good chance that not everything will go to plan, the factor ‘X’ as it were, what’s important is to be able to plan around that when it happens ands keep moving forward. As you can imagine there was a lot of ‘moving parts’ to this project so keeping an eye on everything was a definite requirement.

Planning Shoots Across the UK

One of the biggest challenges throughout the Warbird Workshop project was simply the logistics involved in delivering ten separate aircraft shoots across multiple locations throughout England. Every location brought a completely different set of considerations.

Some aircraft were based in operational hangars with limited access times. Others required coordination around restoration work already taking place for the television series itself. Certain aircraft could only be moved at very specific times of day due to operational requirements, while weather conditions naturally played a huge role when exterior imagery was required. In many cases the production schedules were extremely tight, meaning that travel, preparation, lighting planning and shot design all had to be carefully organised well in advance. There was very little room for delay or error, of course delays did happen, aircraft didn't not make it to where they should have been on a certain date, and weather was at times less than kind, but we worked around everything that we could and had plan B in place for when it was unavoidable.

The project required constant communication between myself, production coordinators, engineers, restoration specialists and location teams. From arranging access permissions and planning lighting setups through to managing equipment transport and adapting to changing conditions on the day, every shoot became a carefully managed production in its own right. It was exactly the kind of environment where years of commercial experience became invaluable.

Creating Photography That Felt Cinematic

From a creative standpoint, one of my biggest aims throughout the project was to avoid producing imagery that simply felt documentary in style.

These aircraft deserved far more than that. Every one of them carries enormous emotional weight and historical significance. They are engineering icons with stories attached to them that span generations. I wanted the imagery to reflect that sense of presence and importance. Lighting became a major part of the visual approach. Many of the aircraft were photographed inside large hangars or restoration facilities where available light was challenging and often inconsistent. Creating dramatic controlled lighting while still retaining authenticity became a key part of the process.

Composition was equally important. Rather than simply photographing aircraft statically, I focused heavily on creating depth, shape, scale and atmosphere within the images. The intention was always to produce photography that immediately drew the viewer into the story of the aircraft itself. The BBC production team were incredibly supportive creatively throughout the project, which allowed the photography to develop into something far more cinematic and visually ambitious than standard aviation documentation.

The Aircraft Featured in Warbird Workshop

One of the most fascinating aspects of the entire BBC project was the sheer variety of aircraft involved across Series 1 and 2 of Warbird Workshop. Each aircraft brought with it a completely different engineering story, historical background and photographic challenge.

From iconic Second World War fighters through to helicopters, seaplanes and Cold War jets, the diversity of aircraft meant that no two shoots were ever remotely alike.
Every location demanded a different visual approach, different lighting strategy and different logistical planning.

Supermarine Spitfire

The Spitfire was naturally one of the centrepieces of the series and also one of the most important shoots creatively for the BBC campaign imagery. I photographed D-Day Veteran Spitfire T.9 MJ772 at Biggin Hill in London, one of the most historically significant RAF fighter stations from the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire’s unmistakable shape and historical importance meant the photography needed to feel cinematic, dramatic and respectful to the aircraft’s legacy. I true aviation icon that was a pleasure to both photograph and spend time with.

Spitfire T.9 MJ772. Built at Castle Bromwich in late 1943 it was delivered to No. 341 (Alsace) Squadron of the Free French Air Force then based at RAF Perranporth, Cornwall on January 20, 1944.( With the squadron moving to RAF Merston on April 17, 1944 in preparation for D Day, MJ772 with pilot Sergeant Habib flew a sortie on June 6 over the landing beaches of Normandy. He reported chasing a FW190 which eventually disappeared into cloud after which he landed safely. On June 18 772 suffered Cat Ac FB (Operational Loss) damage which was repaired by June 22 when it was allocated to No. 340 (Ile-de-France) Squadron based at the Advanced Landing Ground at Funtingdon in Sussex. Given the code GW-A it then flew two further sorties over the beaches flown by Sergeant Trouillet.

Westland Sea King

The Sea King helicopter brought real visual scale and presence to the project. Known for its long-standing role in RAF and Royal Navy rescue operations, it carried enormous emotional connection for many people. Photographing the aircraft involved highlighting both its engineering complexity and the sense of operational power that made the Sea King so iconic.

The Westland Sea King is most probably one of the World’s most recognised and well-known helicopters. The aircraft is often fondly referred to by those who have operated with it as being the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of helicopters due to its ability to be adapted to fit many varied roles. The Sea King was the mainstay of RAF search and rescue operations for many years, and the sole type used for this role since the Wessex was phased out in the 1990s. The Sea King HAR3 entered RAF service in 1978 and has since been augmented by the improved HAR3A version. Today, a global fleet of more than 70 Sea King aircraft is still active with six international operators.

Morane-Saulnier MS.315

One of the most visually distinctive shoots involved the restoration of a historic Morane-Saulnier MS.315
This particular MS.315 was hidden in an aircraft hangar in Melun Villaroche aerodrome near Paris during WWII. The aerodrome was taken over and occupied by the Luftwaffe forces and was used to house various Kampf Geschwader bomber units using the Heinkel HE111. To avoid the aircraft being used by the German forces, it was hidden in the hangar and the wing removed and put outside in a puddle to appear that it was unusable. As a result, she survived to this day and after a lengthy restoration is now flying again in the UK. She remains the only flying MS.315 anywhere in the world. Photographing it required a softer and more heritage-driven visual approach while still maintaining the cinematic quality needed for the BBC promotional campaign.

Aero L-39 Albatros Jet

The L-39 jet brought a completely different energy to the production. Sleek, modern by comparison and visually aggressive, it added a strong Cold War-era contrast to the more historic Second World War aircraft. The engineering environment around the rebuild also created some excellent opportunities for dramatic workshop imagery.

Hawker Hurricane

The Hawker Hurricane was one of the standout aircraft from Series 2 and carried huge emotional and historical significance. While the Spitfire often captures the public imagination, the Hurricane played an absolutely critical role during the Battle of Britain. Photographing it required a careful balance between elegance and strength, particularly given the aircraft’s iconic RAF heritage.

The Hawker Hurricane changed the course of history. Piloted by a few brave young men, including legends such as Gp Capt Douglas Bader DSO DFC and Wg Cdr Eric Nicolson VC DFC, it was the mainstay of RAF Fighter Command in the Battle of Britain, comprising two thirds of the force that fought the Luftwaffe in the summer of 1940. Although it has been unjustly overshadowed by the somewhat more glamorous Supermarine Spitfire, the Hurricane undoubtedly has greater historical significance. Royal Navy test pilot Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown, who flew more aircraft types than anyone else in the world, said of the Hurricane that “it literally saved the country.” Indeed given the circumstances of 1940, when Britain stood alone against Hitler, one could legitimately claim that the Hurricane saved the world.

Douglas C-47 Dakota (DC3)

The Douglas C-47, this one famously known as ‘Fright Night’, an aircraft sometimes referred to as the Dakota, brought an entirely different presence to the project.
Larger, more industrial in character and hugely significant historically, this aircraft famously represented the airborne operations of the Second World War, including the D-Day landings. Photographing it required a stronger emphasis on scale and atmosphere to reflect its immense wartime role while operating in a very tight space.

One famous quote by Dwight D. Eisenhower about the C-47 was,
“Four other pieces of equipment that most senior officers came to regard as among the most vital to our success in Africa and Europe were the bulldozer, the jeep, the 2–ton truck, and the C-47 airplane. Curiously, none of these is designed for combat.”

The C47 transport plane, nicknamed "Night Fright," was bound for the scrapyard in Arkansas when it was bought by the family who own its former RAF Membury wartime base in Berkshire. It is now undergoing restoration in Britain after being transported back across the Atlantic in bits. So far restoration has cost over a million pounds

Westland Wessex HU5 1966

The Wessex helicopter introduced a completely different visual dynamic to the series. Unlike the sleek lines of the fighter aircraft, the Wessex had a rugged, purposeful engineering aesthetic that worked brilliantly photographically. Capturing the complexity of the aircraft mechanically while still producing dramatic commercial imagery became central.

Helicopter Westland Wessex HU.5 Serial wa483 Register G-WSEX XT761 was used by Fleet Air Arm (Royal Navy) Royal Marines and was built in 1966.

An integral part of the Fleet Air Arm SAR story, the Westland Wessex was the mainstay of UK aerial SAR operations for many years, entering service with the Royal Navy in 1961 and serving until its final variant operated by the RN, the HU5, was withdrawn from service in 1988. Whilst a very effective platform for Search and Rescue, the Wessex was actually the first helicopter operated by the Royal Navy to be designed from the outset as an anti-submarine platform. It was also the first helicopter in the world to be produced in significant numbers with a free gas turbine for an engine. The free gas turbine is effectively a jet engine where the exhaust gases revolve a turbine wheel, which in turn provides drive to the gearbox. This replaced the older piston engines which had powered previous helicopters.

The design features which made the Wessex such an effective anti-submarine helicopter were also highly desirable in a Search and Rescue helicopter. Fitted with an early automatic pilot system, the Wessex could operate in day or night and in all weathers. The Wessex was also quieter and less prone to vibration than piston-engine helicopters, qualities which were invaluable to the rear seat crews who were attempting to treat casualties. The load carrying capabilities of the Wessex were also a marked improvement on its predecessor, the Whirlwind, which allowed the Wessex to carry a greater number of casualties. Finally, the Wessex's new Napier Gazelle engine allowed the aircraft to be started very quickly, enabling the crews to respond to emergency calls quicker than they had been able to do previously.

Aeronca Defender

The 1943 Aeronca Defender offered a far lighter and more delicate visual appearance compared with many of the larger aircraft. However, its wartime role as a military liaison aircraft gave it enormous historical character. The shoot focused heavily on highlighting its craftsmanship, detail and authenticity.

The L-3 liaison aircraft, originally designated O-58, is the military version of the Aeronca Model 65 Defender. This high-wing, light airplane could operate from small, hastily-built flying fields. The U.S. Army Air Forces (AAF) ordered the first O-58 aircraft in 1941 to test the use of light aircraft for liaison and observation missions in direct support of ground forces. Between 1941 and 1943, Aeronca Aircraft Corp. of Middleton, Ohio, built more than 1,400 of these aircraft for the AAF, of which 875 were L-3B models.

During WWII, the Aeronca L-3 joined similar Grasshoppers in artillery fire direction, courier service, front-line liaison and pilot training. In 1942, Aeronca developed the TG-5, a training glider based on the O-58. The three-seat glider had a front fuselage replacing the engine, but retained the rear fuselage, wings and tail of the powered version. Aeronca built 250 TG-5 aircraft for the AAF.

Piper Cub

The Piper Cub carried a remarkable wartime history despite its relatively modest appearance. Photographing it was about conveying simplicity, heritage and personality. Its lighter structure and distinctive yellow military markings gave the imagery a very different tone from some of the darker, more aggressive aircraft featured elsewhere in the series.

The Waterbird Seaplane

The Waterbird was one of the most unusual aircraft featured throughout the project and visually unlike anything else in the series. As a recreation of one of the Royal Navy’s earliest seaplanes, it carried an extraordinary sense of aviation history. The photography focused heavily on craftsmanship, engineering detail and the uniqueness of the aircraft itself.

'Waterbird' is a fully completed recreation of the famous aircraft that first flew on 25 November 1911, at Windermere, becoming the first aeroplane to successfully take off from and land on water outside of France and the USA. A truly majestic aircraft that was a privilege to spend time with and photograph.

This extraordinary variety of aircraft was one of the reasons the project became such a rewarding experience creatively. Every shoot demanded a completely fresh mindset, both technically and visually, and it was exactly this diversity that made it such a compelling production to work on and one that was completely enjoyable both professionally and personally.

Tight Deadlines and High Expectations

What many people perhaps do not see when viewing final commercial imagery is the sheer amount of pressure often attached to production schedules.

The Warbird Workshop project operated against extremely demanding deadlines because the imagery needed to be completed, processed and delivered in time for programme launches, marketing campaigns and international distribution. In practice this often meant travelling long distances, shooting full production days, managing post-production workflows immediately afterwards and preparing final assets rapidly for BBC delivery schedules.

Consistency also became critically important. Although each aircraft was unique, the overall visual style across the campaign needed to feel cohesive as a complete television series. Maintaining that consistency across ten aircraft, multiple locations and changing environments required careful planning and a disciplined creative approach throughout the project.

An Exhibition Launch in London

One of the most satisfying moments from the entire assignment came when the photography produced for the series was selected for exhibition display in London as part of the programme launch. Seeing the imagery presented publicly on a large scale was a fantastic moment, not only creatively but professionally as well. It reflected the confidence that the BBC production teams had placed in my work and demonstrated how strongly the photography had connected with the wider identity of the television series.

For me personally, it was also rewarding because it represented the culmination of months of hard work behind the scenes — the travel, planning, coordination and long production days that ultimately made the project successful.

Experience Matters on Projects Like This

Looking back on the Warbird Workshop project, what stands out most to me is just how much the assignment relied upon experience, adaptability and trust.

Producing high-end aviation photography is never simply about owning good camera equipment. Projects of this scale demand reliability, communication, creative direction, logistical organisation and the ability to consistently deliver under pressure. Working with the BBC team across this project was a genuine pleasure and I remain incredibly proud of the imagery we created together. The collaboration allowed me to combine my passion for aviation photography with the structured demands of major commercial production work — something that sits very much at the heart of what I do professionally.

Over the years I’ve always believed that the strongest commercial photography comes from understanding far more than just the visual side of the assignment. It comes from understanding the client, the production environment, the pressures involved and the wider purpose behind the imagery itself.

Warbird Workshop was a perfect example of that approach in action, and without doubt remains one of the most memorable aviation projects I have had the privilege to work on.

Over the last five years, photographer Tim Wallace has flown on many live emergency tasking missions alongside Air Ambulance crews in the UK, documenting frontline HEMS operations during genuine emergency callouts. This extraordinary level of operational access has allowed him to fully immerse himself into the day to day lives of pilots, doctors, specialist paramedics, and the critical care teams, creating a body of work that is both visually compelling and completely authentic to the realities of emergency medical response.

Embedded Within HEMs Operations

The relationship with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance first began in early 2021, just as the Covid pandemic was dramatically changing the operational landscape for organisations across the UK. During the initial discussions it became immediately clear that this was not simply about creating attractive aviation imagery or promotional photographs. The objective was far more important than that. The charity wanted to create a genuine photographic record of the people behind HELIMED 56 and the extraordinary work they carry out every single day to save lives across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

After a series of meetings with the operational teams and management staff, a decision was made to approach the project in a completely immersive way. Rather than photographing from the outside looking in, Tim would undergo full CAA approved Technical Crew Member training in order to gain the operational clearance required to fly on live emergency missions directly alongside the crews themselves.

Training for Operational Access

This was an essential part of the process because authentic documentary photography at this level can only be achieved through trust, understanding, and full operational integration. Over a number of months, Tim completed a series of specialist aviation and safety qualifications that would ultimately allow him to become embedded within the operational environment.

The training included HEMS Technical Crew Member Theory, Aircrew Fire and Smoke Training, Airbus H135 Escape Door Training, Crew Resource Management Training, and Dangerous Goods Helicopter Operations certification. These courses were not simply procedural exercises, they provided a genuine understanding of the challenges, pressures, and responsibilities faced by the crews every day. By completing the required operational standards, Tim was able to work directly with the HELIMED 56 teams during active service, flying on live taskings and documenting real life incidents, Rapid Response Vehicle deployments, and operational preparation from a completely authentic perspective.

The result was photography created from within the reality of the operation, rather than from the outside observing it.

Capturing the Reality of HEMs

One of the most striking elements of spending time alongside the crews was witnessing the extraordinary speed and professionalism with which they operate. During time spent at the HELIMED 56 base, Tim counted no more than forty paces from anywhere inside the hangar to the helicopter pad, with the pilot airborne and operational within minutes of an emergency call being received.

Everything about the environment is designed around rapid response and critical decision making. Doctors, pilots, paramedics, dispatch coordinators, and support staff work together with incredible precision in situations that are often highly stressful, emotionally demanding, and physically exhausting.

The photography created throughout the project was designed to document all of these elements honestly and respectfully. From advanced critical care training exercises and roadside emergency treatment, through to aircraft preparation, patient transfer procedures, and quieter moments between incidents, every image aimed to reflect the professionalism and humanity that exists behind the service. Importantly, the work also helps communicate what a modern Air Ambulance service truly represents.

For many people, the phrase “Air Ambulance” still creates the impression that the helicopter exists purely to transport patients to hospital. In reality, modern HEMS operations are far more advanced than that. The primary role is often to get highly trained critical care specialists to the scene of a serious incident in the shortest possible time, delivering emergency medical intervention long before a patient reaches hospital. The helicopter itself is simply the fastest way of bringing the emergency room directly to the patient.

Photography with Intent

Unlike many emergency services, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is funded entirely through charitable donations, fundraising initiatives, business partnerships, and public support. Every mission flown, every vehicle deployed, every specialist piece of medical equipment, and every member of the crew relies upon continued fundraising throughout the year. Because of this, photography plays a critically important role in the future of the charity.

The imagery created through this work is now used across fundraising campaigns, annual reports, awareness initiatives, public exhibitions, educational programmes, social media campaigns, press features, corporate partnerships, and supporter events. Strong documentary photography helps the charity communicate directly with the public in a way that words alone often cannot achieve. It allows supporters to see the reality of the operation, the commitment of the crews, and the genuine impact their donations have upon saving lives. More importantly, it creates connection, trust, and understanding.

Every image produced throughout this project was created with the intention of helping the public better understand the incredible level of care and commitment provided by the HELIMED teams, while also reinforcing how essential ongoing fundraising is to keep the service operational.

Working Beyond Traditional Commercial Photography

For Tim, projects such as this represent a very different side of commercial photography. While the work still requires technical precision, visual storytelling, and strong creative direction, it also demands empathy, discretion, operational awareness, and the ability to work calmly within highly pressured environments.

Across all of these projects, the objective has remained consistent, to create imagery that is truthful, immersive, respectful, and emotionally authentic to the realities of emergency medical response. Not manufactured drama, but real moments captured honestly.

A Personal Perspective

Tim - “It has been an enormous privilege to work alongside these crews over the last few years and witness first-hand the incredible professionalism and dedication they bring to every incident. Flying on almost 100 live emergency missions has given me a genuine understanding of just how demanding this work really is, both physically and emotionally.

What stood out to me most was the consistency of their focus and calmness under pressure, regardless of the situation they were facing. These are highly skilled people working in very difficult environments, often moving immediately from one traumatic incident to the next with very little time to decompress in between.

My responsibility is always to document their work honestly and respectfully so that people can truly understand what these charities do and why public support is so important. Every photograph created helps tell that story, raise awareness, and ultimately support the fundraising that keeps these crews operational and saving lives every single day of the year.
I look forward to continuing to document the lives of these amazing individuals through the work that they do each and every day to help preserve life. ”

Case Study: Först Wood Chippers (Red Wood Global) - Elevating Machinery Through Light
Project: Commercial photography for marketing, brochure and campaign use

The Brief

To create a series of high-end images of Först wood chippers for use across marketing materials, including brochures, advertising and digital platforms.

The Objective

To move beyond purely functional representation and produce imagery that reflected the strength, engineering and reliability of the product while aligning with a more premium brand position.

The Challenge

Machinery like wood chippers presents a very different challenge to automotive work. The forms are more complex, surfaces are less uniform, and there's often a lot of visual detail competing for attention. Left uncontrolled, this can result in imagery that feels cluttered or overly technical rather than purposeful.

There was also the consideration of scale and use. These machines are designed for tough environments, so the imagery needed to retain authenticity while still feeling refined enough for marketing use.

The Approach

The approach centred around simplifying and controlling the visual structure of each machine.

Lighting was used not just to illuminate, but to organise, guiding the eye through the frame and giving clarity to key areas of design and function.Angles and composition were chosen to give the machines presence and stability, while emphasising their solid, engineered form.

The Outcome

The final imagery has been used across Först's marketing materials, including brochures, advertising and digital content.

The work helped present the product range in a more cohesive and considered way shifting perception from purely functional equipment to something that carries a stronger sense of design, quality and brand identity.

The images not only document the machinery, but support the brand's positioning within a competitive market.

A few months ago I was approached by the British Institute of Professional Photography to write an article for their quarterly magazine ‘the PHOTOGRAPHER’.
The magazine was published this week with that 8 page article entitled ‘Bringing Design to Life with Light’ where I talk openly about what a typical day in studio looks like for me when I am shooting automotive photography for clients. How a studio shoot typically begins, what is involved and how we work to create the very best photography possible from that studio time.

I also talk about how over the past few years, I've been proud to represent Team United Kingdom at the World Photographic Cup, an international competition that brings together the best photographic work from countries across the globe. Each year, photographers compete across a wide range of categories, and the standard is consistently world-class.
For the 2026 World Photographic Cup, I was fortunate to receive Best of Nation for Team UK for my studio image of a Ferrari 812 Competizione and also have it shortlisted in the finals under the Commercial Photography category.

Article Extract - “A typical studio shoot day is highly structured, it has to be. There's a common misconception that photographing a Ferrari is easy. After all, you've got one of the most beautiful supercars in the world sitting in front of you, a fully equipped studio, and a high-end medium-format camera. The reality is very different. Without careful planning and a deep understanding of light, all you'll end up with after a long day is extremely high-resolution bad photographs.

The first job of the day is always cabling out the power leads required for all the lighting. When I shoot cars in studio, I work almost exclusively with continuous lighting. Continuous light allows me to build light gradually across the subject, sculpting it piece by piece. It's a very different approach to flash, and it's not for everyone, but it's what I love.
Over the last 20 years, I've continually explored what continuous light can do and how far I can push it. I even photograph some of my lighting setups so that I have a record of how I lit a certain subject in a certain way to achieve the result I wanted, a library of Behind the Scenes if you like.”

“By the time all the power cables have been run out to roughly where I will need them, the car usually arrives, typically on a covered specialist transporter. Once it's checked and signed over to me, it becomes my responsibility. It's worth saying that my insurance policies are substantial; some of the cars I've photographed are valued in the millions.
The most expensive was a vintage Aston Martin Le Mans car, valued at over £18 million.

Once inside the building, the Ferrari goes through final cleaning and inspection before being moved into the studio cove. The infinity cove is a seamless, edge-free space designed to create a clean, neutral environment where the subject can truly stand alone. Cars are never driven into the studio. Instead, we use specialist wheel jacks that sit under each tyre, allowing us to roll the car in while touching it as little as possible. Under studio lighting, even the slightest mark shows, and Ferraris, while incredible, have famously thin paint layers.

I usually start with a side-profile shot. It's one of the most challenging angles to light when working with continuous light because bounce light off reflected surfaces, studio walls, large reflective boards, and most importantly, the floating ceiling. The ceiling is a vital tool in car photography. Being able to lower and tilt it allows me to create a soft, controlled blanket of light over the car and gives me a strong foundation to build from.

Lighting with continuous sources is never quick. It's a meticulous process of adding lights one by one, each with a specific role. Some are powerful, others subtle, but all contribute to the final sculpted look. I primarily use ARRI lights, ranging from the big powerful 12k lights, all the way through to 10k, 5k, 2k, down to little 500s. It is important to have the different power levels of lights because these lights are either on or off, the main adjustment comes not from being able to control the light output from them but by using a control on them that allows you to vary 'the spread' and diffusion of the light coming from them. On complex body shapes, it's not unusual to have six to ten lights working together. Most operate around 3200K tungsten, although modern LED systems now offer more flexibility.

Just as important as adding light is removing it. Shadow areas are essential. To control them, I use negative fill, black boards or black sheets of material placed close to the bodywork to prevent unwanted reflections. Done correctly, this allows me to shape the panels with precision and depth.”

Capturing historically important cars requires a unique blend of technical precision, design awareness and respect for automotive heritage.
When internationally recognised automotive photographer Tim Wallace was commissioned to photograph the remarkable Aston Martin DBR1/4, the assignment brought together all three.

For Wallace, whose commercial automotive photography work has been used by leading global automotive brands, the opportunity to photograph one of the most historically significant racing cars ever built by Aston Martin represented a rare and special moment. The DBR1 is widely regarded as the most important racing car Aston Martin has ever produced. Developed during the golden era of endurance racing under the ownership of David Brown, the car was created with a single goal in mind, to win the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans.

That ambition was realised in 1959 when the DBR1 secured Aston Martin’s only outright victory at the world-famous endurance race. The car itself was designed and engineered by the highly respected Aston Martin engineer Ted Cutting, who created a machine that combined advanced engineering with beautifully balanced design.

The 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans was won by the Aston Martin DBR1 driven by Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori, securing Aston Martin’s only outright victory at the event. The DBR1/2 car covered 323 laps, securing a 1-2 finish for the team with teammates Paul Frere and Maurice Trintignant in second, cementing the DBR1 as a legendary racing car. 

·       The Team & Car: The David Brown Racing Aston Martin DBR1s (chassis DBR1/2) finished first, with DBR1/4 taking second, defeating rivals Ferrari and Porsche.

·       Performance: The winners completed 323 laps (approximately 2,701 miles) at an average speed of 112.5mph

·       Significance: The 1959 win was the crowning achievement of the DBR1, which also secured the 1959 World Sports Car Championship.

·       Legacy: In 2017, a 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 (one of only five built) became the most expensive Aston Martin ever sold at auction, bringing $22.5 million.

Seven things you probably didn’t know about Aston's '59 Le Mans win

 Back in 1959, Aston Martin rocked up to the Le Mans 24 Hour race with a fleet of three gorgeous DBR1s and a pretty impressive crop of drivers. The number four car was piloted by Stirling Moss and Jack Fairman, Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby were in number five, and Maurice Trintignant and Paul Frére drove number six.

The fight was of course with Ferrari, but Salvadori and Shelby eventually came out on top to take the title, and that remains Aston’s only ever outright win at the famous endurance race.

• In the build-up to the race, the Aston team were swimming in the river opposite the hotel to keep cool. When Sir Stirling dived in on the Wednesday though he lost both of his front teeth. Luckily, his secretary was on hand to fly out a spare pair of false ones before the race weekend.

• The DBR1 was a fantastic racer, but one design flaw for such long stints was that the clutch pedal had been placed just above the exhaust. This, along with the aluminium body, meant that both Salvadori and Trintignant suffered badly scolded feet.

• After all of those miles and 323 laps, the DBR1 was apparently in such good condition at the finish that it could have completed another 24 hours. 

• “The oil pressure was 80 pounds at the start and never varied. The car was 100 per cent for the entire race,” said Salvadori.

• The 1959 race was the first time that either Salvadori or Shelby had ever finished the Le Mans 24hrs.

• “Anyone who reckons on winning Le Mans is just daydreaming. Le Mans is 80 per cent luck. A car that’s built for out-and-out racing is not supposed to stay together for 24 hours,” said Shelby.

• Aston Martin team manager Reg Parnell collected a cheque for approximately £10,000 in French francs for finishing first and second in the race. That’s £228,500 in today’s money.

Among the extremely small number of DBR1 cars ever built, chassis DBR1/4 holds particular historical importance. Completed in 1959, the car evolved from earlier development work linked to the DBR3 programme and was built on chassis DBR3/1. Originally intended to run a short-stroke three-litre engine derived from the larger 3.7-litre unit later used in the road-going Aston Martin DB4, the car ultimately raced with the RB6/300 engine configuration.

While its racing pedigree is extraordinary, the DBR1 is equally celebrated for its design. The flowing aluminium bodywork, sculpted for aerodynamic efficiency, has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful forms ever created in motorsport. Long sweeping lines, elegant proportions and muscular rear haunches give the car a timeless visual presence.

This combination of engineering innovation and sculptural beauty made the DBR1/4 a natural subject when Tim Wallace was commissioned to photograph the car for the official Aston Martin Centenary Book. The remarkable 650-page limited edition publication celebrates 100 years of Aston Martin and documents many of the most important cars ever produced by the marque.

Within the project, Wallace applied his signature automotive photography lighting techniques to reveal the craftsmanship of the car’s aluminium bodywork. Carefully controlled studio lighting was used to shape reflections across the surface of the car, emphasising the subtle curvature and design language that defines the DBR1. For an automotive photographer, cars like the DBR1 exist far beyond simple mechanical objects. They represent a meeting point between engineering, history and design. Photographing DBR1/4 was therefore not simply about documenting a historic racing car, it was about capturing a piece of automotive art.

More than six decades after its creation, the Aston Martin DBR1 remains one of the most celebrated racing cars ever built and a defining moment in the heritage of Aston Martin.

This most recent project has been particularly significant, with Wallace commissioned to create a new body of commercial photography for use across six new product brochures that the company’s marketing department is currently producing. The imagery focuses on presenting Dennis Eagle’s specialist trucks in a clean, powerful and highly polished visual style, highlighting both the engineering quality of the vehicles and the distinctive design language that the brand has developed over the years. Alongside the brochure work, Wallace has also been producing a series of large-format campaign images destined for a set of huge display billboards.

These will be used by Dennis Eagle at industry events and exhibitions around the world, helping the company present its vehicles with bold, high-impact visuals designed to stand out in busy exhibition environments. Much of the commercial truck photography that he has produced over the years has become part of Dennis Eagles brand.

For Wallace, the work reflects a relationship that has developed steadily over time. Known internationally for his commercial vehicle and automotive photography, he has built a reputation for producing carefully crafted imagery that combines dramatic lighting with a clean, highly controlled visual style. That reputation has been an important part of the long-term collaboration. While Wallace is widely recognised for photographing vehicles themselves, one of the key aspects of the partnership with Dennis Eagle has been his ability to adapt to a much wider range of photographic demands.

A significant portion of his work has involved photographing the company’s main manufacturing and engineering facilities in Warwick. Working inside a busy production environment requires a very different approach to lighting and composition compared with outdoor vehicle photography, but Wallace has become well known for translating the same polished visual aesthetic into these industrial settings.

Inside the Warwick facility he has documented everything from large-scale assembly areas and fabrication workshops through to the intricate engineering details that go into building the company’s specialist refuse collection vehicles. These images have become an important part of Dennis Eagle’s wider marketing and communications material, helping to visually tell the story behind the trucks and the engineering expertise that goes into producing them.

According to those involved in the collaboration, Wallace’s ability to move seamlessly between high-end product photography and large-scale industrial documentation has been one of the key reasons the relationship has lasted so long. The work requires not only technical lighting expertise but also the flexibility to work efficiently within a live manufacturing environment.
