In addition, officers issued 18 pedestrian-related citations for unsafe roadway behavior, including crossing against traffic signals and walking in the roadway where sidewalks were available.</p><p class="">These focused enforcement efforts are aimed at improving safety for everyone using Anchorage roadways. The campaign combined enforcement with education to encourage safer decisions by both drivers and pedestrians.</p><p class="">As this campaign concludes, APD’s traffic safety focus now shifts to occupant protection as APD joins agencies across Alaska and nationwide in the NHTSA “Click It or Ticket” campaign, reminding motorists that seat belts save lives. </p>

Upon arrival, the officers located and observed the subject was armed. The subject did not follow commands given by officers. Three APD officers fired their weapons. The subject was struck. Officers immediately began life saving measures. The subject was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. No APD Officers were injured in the incident.</p><p class="">Per policy the state’s Office of Special Prosecutions (OSP) will review the officers’ use of force and determine whether it was justified. Once that has been completed, APD Internal Affairs will review the officers’ actions to confirm whether there was any violation of policy. </p><p class="">As per APD practice, the officers will be placed on four days of administrative leave. Their names will be released publicly 72 hours after the incident. Once OSP has completed their investigation, their findings will be available for the public to review.</p><p class=""><strong>ORIGINAL</strong>: APD is investigating an officer involved shooting in the area of Reka Dr. and Bragaw.         </figure>]]></description></item><item><title>REDDI REPORT LEADS TO ARREST</title><category>Traffic Incidents</category><dc:creator>Gina Romero</dc:creator><pubDate>Sun, 17 May 2026 00:03:14 +0000</pubDate><link>https://www.anchoragepolice.com/news/reddi-report-leads-to-arrest-1</link><guid isPermaLink="false">5f80ce8c1783002d6e280cdb:618c1d0c7a43643038670647:6a08bd1f85ba832b86c6cc6f</guid><description><![CDATA[<p class="">At 8:57 PM on May 14, 2026, a citizen called in a REDDI report to APD Dispatch about a reckless pickup truck that was traveling northbound on the Glenn Highway.</p><p class="">A Sergeant with the APD Traffic Unit, who was working on a grant funded pedestrian safety overtime detail, initially responded to the call. He located the vehicle near Thunderbird Falls and observed that the truck was swerving and speeding. </p><p class="">Upon contact with the driver, 32-year old Anchorage resident Canyon Sandberg, there were signs of impairment and an open container of an alcoholic beverage inside of the vehicle. Responding officers performed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) and the decision was made to arrest Canyon Sandberg for Operating Under the Influence (OUI). He was transported and remanded on the charge of OUI after a breath sample result that was well over the legal limit. The case has since developed into an assault investigation. </p><p class="">While the assault remains under investigation, police have noticed circumstances that warranted a closer look. At approximately 5:10 PM on March 9, 2026, officers responded to his Anchorage residence where Bowser was found appearing to be intoxicated. Following the incident, Bowser was transported for medical clearance, and a blood sample was collected pursuant to a search warrant as part of the ongoing investigation.</p><p class="">Investigation revealed he had been driving his department-issued, marked vehicle while off duty and impaired. The case was referred to the Office of Special Prosecutions, which formally charged Bowser with DUI on&nbsp;April 24, 2026. He has been placed on administrative leave pending both internal and external investigation.</p><p class="">Ofc. When officers arrived, they found an adult male victim with a gunshot wound to the upper body. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.</p><p class="">There are no arrests at this time. The charges stem from a months-long investigation by the Anchorage Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit (CACU) into alleged abuse reported to have occurred in both Anchorage and Klawock.</p><p class="">Williams was arrested in Klawock on April 13, 2026, by the Klawock Police Department.
