APD Case:  26-009645  

On June 16 at approximately 10:03 pm, APD was called to a business at 8900 Old Seward Hwy for reports of theft. Upon arrival, three APD officers contacted the subject who was located inside of the business. As one officer moved to handcuff the subject, the subject attempted to flee and a struggle followed. The subject then fired a concealed handgun at officers, striking one APD officer twice in the lower body. That officer is recovering at a local hospital. The third APD officer was struck in the upper body. The round for the third APD officer was stopped by a ballistic trauma plate. That officer then returned fire and the subject was pronounced deceased on scene.

The name of the deceased subject will be released when next of kin notifications are complete.

Per policy the state’s Office of Special Prosecutions (OSP) will review the officer’s use of force and determine whether it was justified. Once that has been completed, APD Internal Affairs will review the officers’ actions to confirm whether there was any violation of policy.

As per APD practice, the officer who discharged the weapon will be placed on four days of administrative leave. Their name will be released publicly 72 hours after the incident. Once OSP has completed their investigation, their findings will be available for the public to review.

UPDATE 06/15/2026: On June 13, 2026, 25-year-old Remmel Carter-Nance was remanded to the Anchorage Correctional Center (ACC) on charges of Murder 2, Manslaughter, and Assault 1.

NARRATIVE: At approximately 5:08 AM on June 13, 2026, officers responded to the 100 block of North Hoyt Street in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival officers located a deceased male individual. A second individual was transported to a hospital for treatment of possible life-threatening injuries. 
Detectives have contacted everyone believed to be involved in this investigation and are not looking for anyone at this time.

DATE/TIME OF INCIDENT: ​June 7, 2026, at approximately 3:20 AM​ 

CURRENT STATUS: ​Initial Report​  

NARRATIVE: At ​approximately 3:20 AM ​on ​June 7, 2026​, officers responded to ​the 100 block of East 76th Avenue​ in reference to ​a shooting​. Upon arrival, officers located ​a male adult suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering.

This incident is under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident, to include surveillance footage of the area, is asked to contact Police Dispatch at 3-1-1 (option #1) or (907)786-8900 (option #0).  Police are currently following up on leads and there is no suspect information to release at this time. The motive for the incident, and any relationship between the parties involved, is under investigation. 

(Anchorage, AK) – On June 2, 2026, Anchorage Superior Court Judge Garton sentenced Jalonni Blackshear to 150 years to serve for his guilty plea to two counts of murder for the deaths of his wife Raechyl Blackshear and his 14-year-old daughter, J.B.

The charges stemmed from actions taken by Blackshear after a March 30, 2022 report by J.B. that she had been sexually abused. J.B. reported sexual abuse, but would not disclose the perpetrator. The primary suspect was her father, Blackshear. Immediately after the report, Blackshear contacted Raechyl and convinced her to bring J.B. to the police station to recant her story. On April 3rd, 2022, Raechyl took J.B. to the Anchorage Police Department and attempted to have her recant her statement. That was the last day anyone from law enforcement saw Raechyl or J.B. Raechyl never returned to work and J.B. never returned to school.

On April 6, 2022, Blackshear left Alaska. It was later discovered that after murdering his wife and child, he took their phones and pretended to be them, to include telling his surviving children that mommy missed them and to wish one a happy birthday. Through their phones, Blackshear was tracked through various states on the east coast, and was eventually apprehended in Staten Island, NY.

On April 15th, 2022, Raechyl failed to show up for a scheduled medical appointment. APD responded to the Blackshear residence where both Raechyl and J.B. were found deceased in an upstairs bedroom from gunshot wounds to the head.

In accepting the agreement between the state and the defendant, Judge Garton found that Blackshear murdered his wife and daughter after subjecting his family members to years of physical violence and his daughters and wife to sexual violence. She stated that he terrorized his family into silence and his ability to abuse them depended on their silence, and when his daughter did not cooperate with the system that he had constructed, Blackshear killed her and her mother. In handing down the 150 year sentence, Judge Garton noted that Blackshear’s communication after the murders, where he impersonated his dead wife and child, were depraved, cruel and calculated.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Rachel K. Gernat of the Anchorage District Attorney’s Office, with the assistance of paralegal Aryel Dilley. The Anchorage Police Department’s Crimes Against Children’s Unit (CACU) and Homicide Unit conducted the investigation with the assistance of Homeland Security and the U.S. Marshalls. The lead detectives were (Ret.) APD Detective Jack Kleinsmith and APD Detective Brendan Lee.

On June 6, 2026, at about 12:55 pm, APD responded to the intersection of Boniface and Tudor for a report of a multi-vehicle collision with injuries. Officers arrived and discovered that a Ford F150 had rear ended a Honda Civic and that several other vehicles were also involved.  All of the vehicles were eastbound, and all were stopped except for the Ford F150. The driver of the Honda Civic taken to a local hospital and later died as a result of their injuries. The name of the deceased individual will be released once next of kin notification procedures are complete.

The driver of the Ford F150 was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No arrests or citations have been issued at this time. This case is being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU).

On June 3, 2026 at about 12:14 am APD patrol responded to the area of Benson and Arctic for a report of a vehicle crash.  Officers and AFD medics arrived and discovered a Honda CRV rolled over and a Toyota Prius heavily damaged.  The driver of the Prius was ultimately identified as 46-year-old Alpha Sesay. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of Kin notification procedures are complete.

The Honda CRV was determined to have been stolen a short time earlier. The driver was a female identified as Gabrielle Hill-Chayalkun. The investigation revealed that Hill-Chayalkun was driving eastbound on Benson at a high rate of speed when she struck Sesay who was stopped at a red light for Arctic Blvd.  The investigation also revealed that her  blood alcohol level was nearly five times the legal limit. An arrest warrant was obtained for the offenses of Manslaughter, Vehicle Theft, and DUI. Hill-Chayalkun was arrested and remanded to the custody of DOC.

 APD CASE: 26-0014821

Three of Mr. James’ adopted daughters disclosed multiple sexual assaults between 2015 and 2018, as well as the surreptitious recording of children through covert cameras concealed in electrical outlets and light fixtures inside bathrooms and bedrooms at the family's Anchorage residence. The investigation extended well beyond Alaska's borders after one daughter attempted to report the sexual assaults. The family then moved to Cambodia, Guatemala, Italy, and Louisiana, requiring investigators to coordinate across multiple international jurisdictions.

"The verdict is the result of years of careful, trauma-informed investigative work by detectives, forensic examiners and interviewers, victim advocates, and our prosecuting partners," the Anchorage Police Department said. "Our deepest respect goes to the survivors who came forward and trusted this process. Their courage made this prosecution possible."

The investigation was conducted by the Anchorage Police Department's Special Victims Unit, the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Anchorage Field Office, Alaska Office of Children Services, and the Slidell Police Department, in coordination with the Alaska Department of Law, and partner agencies in the United States and abroad.

Mr. James remains in custody pending sentencing on October 5, 2026. The Anchorage Police Department thanks the survivors, their advocates, and every domestic and international partner whose work made today's verdict possible.

The investigation revealed that one occupant inside of the vehicle was on probation supervision for a prior felony conviction. Subsequently, that occupant, Jose Santiago,22, was charged with misconduct involving weapons in the first and third degrees. Another occupant in the vehicle, Kendrick Mcvay, 22, was charged with misconduct involving weapons in the first degree. Both were transported to the Anchorage Correctional Complex and remanded without bail.

Both drivers remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. There have been no citations or charges at this time.  The crash is being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU).

The victim is identified as 66-year-old Muntaqim Thabit. Next-of-kin notification procedures are complete.

APD Case 26-13927

Between April 20 and May 17, officers worked nearly 500 hours conducting high-visibility enforcement focused on dangerous driving and unsafe pedestrian behaviors along Anchorage roadways known for collisions involving vehicles.

During the operation, officers conducted 661 traffic stops and issued 677 citations, including:

• 272 speeding violations

• 54 illegal window tint violations

• 51 no proof of insurance violations

• 34 red light violations

• 6 racing-related violations

Enforcement efforts resulted in:

• 8 DUI/OUI arrests

• 1 reckless driving arrest

• 6 arrests for pedestrian interference

• 8 additional arrests for other offenses

Officers also contacted 25 drivers who were unlicensed or driving while suspended, revoked, or canceled and impounded 17 vehicles. In addition, officers issued 18 pedestrian-related citations for unsafe roadway behavior, including crossing against traffic signals and walking in the roadway where sidewalks were available.

These focused enforcement efforts are aimed at improving safety for everyone using Anchorage roadways. The campaign combined enforcement with education to encourage safer decisions by both drivers and pedestrians.

As this campaign concludes, APD’s traffic safety focus now shifts to occupant protection as APD joins agencies across Alaska and nationwide in the NHTSA “Click It or Ticket” campaign, reminding motorists that seat belts save lives.

The involved officers are identified as:

On May 19 at about 12:03 a.m., APD Patrol Officers responded to the area of Bragaw St. and Reka Dr. for reports of an adult male firing rounds in the air from a handgun. Upon arrival, the officers located and observed the subject was armed. The subject did not follow commands given by officers. Three APD officers fired their weapons. The subject was struck. Officers immediately began life saving measures. The subject was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. No APD Officers were injured in the incident.
