On the morning of October 7, 2023, the deadliest day in Israel’s history unfolded in southern Israel. At the same time, a devastating and unprecedented phase of war began in Gaza. This post documents the facts based on primary witness testimonies, military statements, reporting from international news outlets, UN reports, and archaeological records. The goal is to document facts, provide deep historical context, and let readers process the evidence side by side.

PART 1: THE ATTACK IN ISRAEL (6:29 AM – 6:00 PM)

6:29 AM: The Breach
Rocket sirens sounded across southern Israel. As thousands of young people were leaving the Nova music festival near Re’im, Hamas announced "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood."
Militants breached the Gaza-Israel border fence in over 30 locations using trucks, motorcycles, paragliders, and boats. The Erez Crossing was overrun. Militants entered through at least 7 primary locations and attacked kibbutzim, the city of Sderot, and military bases from land and sea. Militants entered residential communities and homes, killed civilians, took hostages, and set fire to houses.

Kfar Aza: ∼50 civilians killed. At nearby Kibbutz Alumim, 16-17 Thai and Nepalese workers were killed. Aviva Siegel, released after 51 days in captivity, testified:
"We were in our safe room, holding the handle closed, when they broke through the window. They dragged us out into the street. Homes were burning all around us, and neighbors were lying dead on the lawn. They put us on a motorcycle and drove us into Gaza."
Be’eri: 108 killed. Yasmin Porat was held alongside 14 hostages in a home. She testified that IDF forces engaged in heavy crossfire with the militants inside the community, an account that sparked significant debate within Israel regarding military tactics that day. Haaretz, Oct. 9 report, quoted a meeting where commanders discussed decisions including "shelling houses with all their occupants inside in order to eliminate the terrorists along with the hostages."

Nir Oz: Over a quarter of the community killed or abducted. Ilana Gritzewsky (Hostage, UN Human Rights Council testimony). "On October 7, terrorists stormed our Kibbutz, murdering, kidnapping, and burning. They touched me and sexually abused me. I am standing here today, not as a report, not as a statistic. I am a woman who survived. I am the living proof of sexual violence by Hamas. I woke up half naked with seven terrorists standing over me, not knowing what happened to me in those lost moments". She was released Nov 30, 2023 during a ceasefire. Shlomo Margalit (86, Kibbutz founder). "Our local volunteer defense team fought for two hours until they were killed or out of ammunition. Then the kibbutz was completely overrun. Terrorists entered our house three times while we hid in the safe room, holding the door shut."

Netiv HaAsara: 15 killed.

Military Bases

Nahal Oz: 66 soldiers killed, 7 hostages taken. An IDF investigation found militants used suffocating gas substances inside the command bunker, which can cause suffocation within minutes.
Zikim: Militants attempted an amphibious landing on Zikim beach, where IDF naval forces intercepted multiple vessels. IDF said 2 attackers were killed on the beach, and 4 vessels were destroyed.

By the end of the day: Approximately 1,200 people were killed in Israel, and more than 250 men, women, and children were taken hostage into the Gaza Strip.

PART 2: THE AFTERMATH AND GAZA, OCT 7 ONWARD

Following the attack, Israel declared a state of war.

Hamas Statement: Stated the attack was launched in retaliation for the continuous blockade of Gaza, actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, and the detention of thousands of Palestinian prisoners.

Israel's Response: Israel launched immediate, heavy airstrikes across Gaza that night, followed weeks later by a full-scale ground invasion aimed at dismantling Hamas infrastructure and securing hostage releases.

Witness Reports from Gaza (Oct 7–8)

AP, BBC, Al Jazeera: Airstrikes heavily damaged infrastructure in Gaza City, Khan Younis, and refugee camps. Within 24 hours, local hospitals reported being completely overwhelmed with casualties.

The destruction and civilian casualties in Gaza in the following weeks became a central reason for global protests and for why many people began supporting Palestinians.

PART 3: STRATEGIC ANALYSIS – WHY WAS ISRAEL TARGETED?

Security analysts and Hamas' official declarations point to four primary strategic motivations behind the October 7 attack:

Disrupting Regional Normalization: Before October 7, Israel was close to finalizing a landmark normalization deal with Saudi Arabia under the Abraham Accords framework. Hamas sought to derail this agreement to prevent the Palestinian issue from being sidelined.
Palestinian Political Rivalry: Hamas sought to eclipse the Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) in the West Bank by presenting itself as the sole defender of Palestinian national interests and holy sites in Jerusalem.
Exploiting Internal Vulnerability: Israel had experienced months of severe political division and domestic protests throughout 2023 over judicial reform. Hamas leadership viewed this social fracture as a moment of military weakness.
Hostage Leverage: Acquiring a massive volume of hostages gave Hamas significant leverage to demand the release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli facilities.

To understand the reactions, here’s the timeline which both sides reference:

1947-1948: UN partition plan and Israel’s founding. War followed. ∼700,000 Palestinians displaced. Israelis call it Independence. Palestinians call it the Nakba.
1967: Six-Day War. Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.
1990s: Oslo Accords attempted a two-state solution. It stalled.
2005: Israel withdrew settlers and troops from Gaza.
2007: Hamas took control of Gaza. Israel and Egypt imposed a blockade citing security concerns.
2007-2023: Multiple wars between Israel and Hamas. Settlement expansion continued in the West Bank.

For many Israelis, Oct 7 was about survival and preventing another massacre.

For many Palestinians, it was viewed in the context of occupation and blockade.

PART 4: HISTORICAL DEEP DIVE – WHAT EXISTED BEFORE 1947?

To understand how both sides view their right to the land, it is necessary to examine the history of the region long before the modern state system.

1. Ancient Era (c. 1000 BCE – 135 CE)

Ancient Jewish kingdoms (Israel and Judah) existed in this region for centuries, with Jerusalem as their central religious and political hub. In 135 CE, following the suppression of the Jewish Bar Kokhba Revolt, Roman Emperor Hadrian exiled large portions of the Jewish population and renamed the province Syria Palaestina (after the ancient Philistines) to strip away its Jewish identity.

2. Ottoman Empire Rule (1517 – 1917)

For 400 years, there was no independent political nation called "Israel" or "Palestine." The region was governed as administrative districts of the Ottoman Empire (such as the Sanjak of Jerusalem). The population comprised Arab Muslims, Arab Christians, Druze, Bedouin, and a continuous native minority of Jews.

4. The 1947 UN Partition Plan (Resolution 181)

With violence rising between Jewish and Arab communities, Britain handed the issue to the United Nations. The UN voted to divide the land into two independent states: one Jewish state and one Arab state, with Jerusalem placed under international administration.

Jewish leaders accepted the partition and proclaimed the State of Israel in May 1948.

Arab leaders rejected the plan, viewing the land division as unjust, leading to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

PART 6: WHY OPINIONS REMAIN DEEPLY DIVIDED

Understanding why opinions on this conflict are so intensely polarized requires examining the core arguments held by both sides:

Why Many Support Israel:

Existential Survival: View October 7 as an existential threat and argue that no sovereign state can tolerate an armed neighbor committed to its destruction.

Historical Right: Point to millennia of unbroken ancestral, religious, and archaeological connection to the land, alongside recognition by the UN in 1947.

Defense Against Terror: Emphasize that Israel's military actions target an organization that intentionally operates within civilian areas and holds innocent hostages.

Why Many Support Palestinians:

Occupation and Blockade: Argue that 56 years of military occupation in the West Bank and a 16-year blockade on Gaza created intolerable conditions that fueled desperation.

AUTHOR'S REFLECTION: PROCESSING THE VIOLENCE AND THE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Writing this post forced me to confront details and footage that are impossible to forget. Watching video accounts and reading primary witness testimonies from October 7 was deeply disturbing to the core. The brutality inflicted on non-combatants, at a music festival, in their own bedrooms, and in front of their families, was undeniably gruesome and inhuman.

Seeing that level of violence naturally raises painful questions: Why can’t people just live in peace? Why is there so much persistent hostility toward Israel? And why do some Palestinians support or tolerate an organization like Hamas despite the sheer devastation it brings?

When you look closely at the history and political realities, the answers reveal a deeply complex and tragic web:

The Cycle of Desperation and Resistance: Decades of displacement, military occupation in the West Bank, and a prolonged blockade on Gaza have created an environment of deep hardship and hopelessness for millions of ordinary Palestinians. When peaceful political avenues and international diplomacy consistently fail to deliver a sovereign state or basic freedoms, violent groups fill the void. For many who support Hamas, it is not necessarily an endorsement of atrocities or extremist religious ideology, but rather a view of them as the only group actively resisting an unbearable status quo.

Distrust in Alternatives & Internal Authoritarianism: The secular Palestinian Authority (PA) in the West Bank, which advocates for diplomacy with Israel, is widely viewed by many locals as corrupt, powerless, and overly compliant with Israeli security apparatuses. At the same time, Hamas operates as an authoritarian ruler in Gaza, suppressing internal political dissent and offering little space for non-violent alternatives to emerge. In the absence of a strong, credible, and free political leadership, radical factions often maintain a firm hold on power.

Geopolitics and External Drivers: Hamas does not operate in a vacuum. It receives significant financial, military, and strategic backing from regional powers like Iran, using the conflict to advance broader geopolitical agendas... often at the immense expense of the local population and regional stability.

Entrenched Historical Narratives and Existential Fear: On the Israeli side, history has taught a lesson of constant vulnerability... from ancient exiles and centuries of persecution to the Holocaust and modern warfare. October 7 struck at the foundational promise of Israel as a safe haven for the Jewish people, reviving deep psychological trauma and reinforcing the conviction that overwhelming military strength is required for basic survival. Conversely, for Palestinians, the ongoing expansion of settlements and military control feels like an existential threat aimed at erasing their presence and claim to the land.

The Human Toll: Facing the aftermath of October 7 and the catastrophic destruction, mass displacement, and loss of civilian life in Gaza that followed highlights the terrifying speed at which violence breeds further trauma for future generations.

Seeing the raw footage of October 7 makes it hard to understand how violence could ever be justified. Yet, looking at the daily reality for both Israelis and Palestinians helps explain where the deep resentment comes from. Facing these dark truths directly... without ignoring the horrors committed on one side or the ongoing oppression on the other... is the only way to begin understanding why peace has been so heartbreakingly out of reach.

On a final note, this was a day of immense trauma for both Israelis and Palestinians. Reading survivor accounts side-by-side with news reports makes clear why it changed everything, and why people still argue so intensely about blame, responsibility, and what comes next.

Inclusivity is a word we love to use in the Philippines. We talk about equality, diversity, and rights. But when it comes to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the reality is far from inclusive. As a mother of a PWD, I see the gaps every day - from inaccessible venues to misunderstood laws.

📚 Education & Awareness

DepEd has programs like Special Needs Education (SNED) and Inclusive Education. These sound good on paper, but unlike GAD seminars, there is no mandatory nationwide seminar for PWD awareness. Many teachers lack adequate training to address diverse needs.

The Curriculum Gap

Inclusion and integration should mean awareness for every student, not only for teachers. Yet here’s the reality:

Elementary & HS: PWD awareness is siloed into SPED programs. Regular subjects (Math, English, Science, Araling Panlipunan) do not embed disability awareness. Students are taught Anti-Bullying and GAD, yet disability rights and accessibility remain absent.

College: CHED encourages inclusive education, but PWD awareness modules are optional. Disability studies appear only in specialized courses (Education, Social Work, Psychology).

Result:

Generations of learners graduate without ever being taught empathy, accessibility, or PWD rights, unless they personally know a PWD. True inclusion means embedding disability awareness into curriculum integration, student seminars, and peer inclusion programs. Awareness must reach learners themselves, not just educators.

Government Education Programs:

DEAF Inc. Home Schooling

Community-based rehabilitation for deaf learners, using Filipino Sign Language. Accessible in select communities, but limited reach.

Open Universities:

For older learners, open universities offer flexible access:

UP Open University (UP OUS): Public, online-first, UDL-compliant (screen reader support, captions, adjustable text size). Accessible nationwide but requires stable internet and devices.

Equipment: Blind learners need Braille tools; deaf learners need hearing aids; physically immobile learners need accessible setups.

Implementation Reality Check

DepEd’s inclusive education programs, ILRCs, SNED, ALS, and the AI-based SABAY project screening look strong on paper. RA 11228 PhilHealth Coverage: Mandates automatic coverage, but hospitals sometimes decline claims, citing “no budget", probably because PhilHealth is not paying back the hospitals or clinics.

Another recurring issue is that some companies mistakenly deduct the full premium from PWD employees, treating them like regular staff.

The law mandates that PWDs are automatically covered by PhilHealth, but many employers misunderstand how to handle the contributions.

For employed PWDs: The employer pays 50% of the monthly premium, while the national government pays the other 50%. The PWD employee "should not shoulder any direct contribution".

For self‑employed or informal PWDs: The government "pays the full premium", provided they are registered with their local PDAO and have a valid PWD ID.

On August 27, 2026, a viral video showed a PWD customer allegedly manhandled by a security guard inside National Book Store, SM North EDSA. The customer was accused of shoplifting and was punched, sparking outrage online.

National Book Store: Issued a statement of regret and stressed inclusivity.

SM North EDSA: Suspended the guard pending investigation.

Quezon City Government (PDAO): Coordinated legal support for the PWD.

NCDA: Reminded establishments that justice and inclusion must go hand in hand.

This incident proves how fragile PWD rights remain, even in major establishments. It highlights the urgent need for mandatory PWD awareness seminars for companies, businesses, and organizations, so staff know how to handle situations with dignity and respect.

🏢Workplace & Organizational Awareness

Awareness must extend beyond schools into companies and organizations:

Mandatory PWD seminars for employees. Companies should train staff on PWD rights and sensitivity awareness.
Accessibility audits to comply with BP 344 Accessibility Law.
Inclusive hiring. Develop meaningful roles where PWDs can excel, rather than offering token opportunities.
Reasonable accommodations. Flexible schedules, assistive tech, and accessible workspaces must be standard

Without workplace awareness, laws remain hollow.

Everyday Frustrations

Venues not PWD-friendly: ramps missing, toilets inaccessible.
Discounts denied or limited: pharmacies and groceries refusing the mandated rate.
PWD ID renewal: burdensome for permanent disabilities.
Hospitals declining PhilHealth claims: citing “no budget.”
Tuition discounts misunderstood: families expecting benefits not covered by law.
Awareness gap: inclusivity spoken of, but rarely practiced.

🏠 NGOs Filling the Gap

While government enforcement is weak, NGOs step up with real programs:

Tahanang Walang Hagdanan: Sheltered workshops, mobility aids, scholarships, and community-based rehabilitation.

Project Inclusion Network: Employment training, workplace inclusion, and livelihood support.

DeafEd Philippines: Sign language training, Braille literacy, advocacy workshops, and donations to PWD partner groups.

As a mother of a PWD with a permanent orthopedic disability, these issues are not just statistics or policies to me... they are lived realities. My daughter was born with Arnold-Chiari II malformation, a congenital defect that required surgery to cover her open lumbosacral spine. While her curved spine cannot be corrected and she has no sensation in her lower extremities, she is mentally normal and full of potential.

Everyday life is not simple. She uses a catheter because she has no bladder control, and she also lives with pelvocaliectasia. These medical realities make her rights under laws like RA 11228 and RA 9442 even more critical. Yet hospitals sometimes decline PhilHealth claims, establishments invent discount limits, and schools misunderstand their obligations. Each denial is not just a technicality... it is a direct blow to her dignity.

And yet, I see her strength. I believe PWDs like her can excel in jobs if society opens doors, such as:

Digital freelancing: Writing, design, or virtual assistance.
Crafts and workshops: Orthopedic PWDs creating products with skill and pride.
Advocacy and teaching: Sharing lived experiences to educate others.

🎶 Concerts and Accessibility

Even leisure moments bring anxiety. My daughter loves SB19, and I want her to enjoy concerts like any fan. But accessibility is inconsistent:

At the Philippine Arena, there is a designated PWD section, but reaching it is difficult. We had to rely on security staff to help us go up, proving that the building still lacks proper pathways and ramps.

At the SM MOA Concert Grounds, I saw no designated PWD seating. For a fan in a wheelchair, this means missing out on the full experience.

At Smart Araneta Coliseum

Though it has provisions for PWD accessibility, because it is an older, historic venue, the layout requires specific navigation. The main entryways, particularly the Red Gate (which connects directly from Gateway Mall) and the Yellow Gate, offer flat, step-free access into the coliseum's main concourse level. While the lower concourse is accessible, the venue's upper levels, specifically the Upper Box and General Admission (Gen Ad) sections, do not have elevator access. Getting to these higher tiers requires climbing a significant number of steep stairs.

These challenges turn what should be joyful family memories into stressful situations. Accessibility should not be an afterthought... it should be part of every venue’s design.

✨ Closing Reflection

Inclusivity means more than discounts. It means dignity, accessibility, and awareness. Until our laws are lived in practice, PWDs remain excluded from spaces and opportunities they deserve. As Filipinos, we must demand not just words, but action. In researching and writing these articles, I uncover gaps and shortcomings across education, workplaces, laws, and even leisure. Writing this blog is not only about advocacy, but also a reflection of lived frustrations.

Hopeful Vision

I dream of a Philippines where PWDs no longer have to fight for rights already written in law. A country where hospitals honor PhilHealth coverage without hesitation, where schools welcome PWD students with dignity and support, and where establishments stop inventing rules that deny discounts.

I imagine my daughter... with her permanent orthopedic disability, living with Arnold Chiari II malformation and pelvocaliectasia, growing up in a society that sees her not for what she cannot do, but for the strength and potential she carries. A society where she can work, contribute, and live fully without barriers.

Inclusivity should mean ramps in every building, accessible toilets in every venue, fair discounts in every store, and equal opportunities in every workplace. It should mean families like mine no longer asking “saan may mali?” but instead saying, “dito tama na.”

Most Filipinos haven't heard of Pax Silica yet. It's a global project targeting New Clark City, Tarlac, to build semiconductors, AI, and data centers. Sounds futuristic, right? But here's the catch... AI and data centers need massive electricity and water, that would drain our waters, spike our bills, side swept the Aeta communities and local farmers who call this land home and their livelihood.

Introduction

In April 2026, the Philippines officially joined Pax Silica, a US‑led coalition focused on semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and critical minerals. The declaration was signed by Trade Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo, making the Philippines the 13th member.

The plan includes a 4,000‑acre Economic Security Zone in New Clark City, Tarlac, envisioned as the first AI‑native industrial hub under Pax Silica. While the Philippines has committed to the project, the framework agreement with the US is expected later in 2026, and construction is targeted to begin around 2028.

This means Pax Silica is real and underway, but not yet fully finalized. For Filipinos, the question is whether this project will bring prosperity or deepen existing struggles with energy, water, and community rights.

Potential Benefits

Job creation: 130,000–190,000 direct jobs and up to 800,000 indirect jobs, benefiting engineers, IT graduates, and skilled workers.

Economic growth: ₱180 billion in annual government revenue projected, strengthening funds for infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

Global positioning: Elevates the Philippines as a hub for semiconductors and AI, boosting international competitiveness.

Infrastructure development: Roads, renewable energy plants, and water systems promised to support the hub.

Skill advancement: Filipino workers may gain exposure to advanced technologies, enhancing global competitiveness.

Regional uplift: Tarlac could see new investments in housing, transport, and local businesses.

Risks and Costs

Energy burden: Data centers may consume 3 gigawatts daily, worsening high electricity rates.

Water strain: Cooling systems need 65–90 million liters of water daily, risking shortages.

"Pax Silica may promise billions in investment, but it threatens to drain our water, raise our electricity bills, and displace communities... especially the Aetas of Tarlac. It risks giving away our land for 99 years, sidelining indigenous peoples, and locking us into energy and water crises. For ordinary Filipinos, this means tighter rationing, higher living costs, and less control over our own future. Development should uplift Filipinos, not exploit them. I oppose Pax Silica because true progress must protect our sovereignty, our environment, and our communities. Progress that destroys people and culture is not progress... it is exploitation and betrayal.”

When you step into Fort Santiago, you don’t just enter a fortress, you walk into a layered chronicle of conquest, resistance, tragedy, and remembrance. Its stones breathe stories, its dungeons echo silence, and its gardens now bloom where cries once faded.

A Fortress Born of Power

Originally the palisade of Rajah Sulayman, destroyed by pirate Limahong in 1574, Fort Santiago was rebuilt in stone by Miguel López de Legazpi in 1593. Its bastions, moats, and the relief of Saint James (Santiago Matamoros) carved into the gate symbolized Spanish dominance and Manila’s colonial strength.

Wars and Occupations

Spanish Era: Guarded the galleon trade, Manila’s lifeline.

British Occupation (1762): Briefly seized during the Seven Years’ War.

American Period: Moats drained, golf courses laid, leisure over legacy.

Japanese Occupation (WWII): The darkest chapter. Dungeons became torture chambers, floodgates drowned prisoners, and mass executions scarred its stones.

Tragedy and Discoveries

After WWII, hundreds of prisoners were found dead inside Fort Santiago. Their remains were later buried in more respected grounds within the fort, transforming it into a shrine of remembrance. Step inside Manila’s timeless fortress, where cobblestone streets whisper stories of centuries past. Intramuros, often called the Walled City, is more than stone and history; it’s a living museum that continues to inspire and educate visitors today.

A Fortress of History

The name, from the Spanish word meaning “within walls,” refers to the fortified city founded at the mouth of the Pasig River shortly after 1571 by the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. Intramuros was the political, religious, and military heart of Spanish rule in the Philippines. Its massive walls, stretching 4.5 kilometers and rising up to 22 feet, protected the colony from foreign invasions and local uprisings. The Governor-General’s Palace and the Real Audiencia of Manila were located here. Within its 64‑hectare enclosure stood the Governor‑General’s Palace, the Real Audiencia of Manila, and countless churches and schools.

The stone outline of the defensive wall of Intramuros is an irregular pentagon in shape, following the contours of Manila Bay and the curvature of the Pasig River. The Muralla walls covered an area of 64 hectares (160 acres) of land, surrounded by 8 feet (2.4 m) thick stones and high walls that rise to 22 feet (6.7 m).

A moat or ditch was added to the main structure in 1603. The US filled in the moat after World War II to prevent disease, and a golf course now occupies the space. Intramuros was severely damaged by Allied bombings during World War II. The walls, city gates, and many historic buildings have since been restored.

Landmarks Within the Walls

Manila Cathedral: Rebuilt several times due to earthquakes and wars, it remains a symbol of resilience.

San Agustin Church: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, admired for its baroque architecture.

Fort Santiago: A citadel that once defended the city and later imprisoned national hero Jose Rizal. Today, Fort Santiago houses a museum dedicated to Rizal's life and works.

Casa Manila: A museum recreating Spanish colonial life.

Baluarte de San Diego: A bastion offering panoramic views of Manila. Walking through Intramuros, you’ll encounter cobblestone streets, colonial‑era houses, and restored gates that transport you back in time.

Intramuros Today

For centuries, Intramuros endured earthquakes, uprisings, and colonial administration until Spain’s rule ended in 1898. Intramuros is not just a reminder of the Philippines' colonial history but also a vibrant cultural hub. It hosts various events, from historical reenactments to art exhibits, making it a living museum that continues to educate and inspire visitors.

And despite being heavily damaged during World War II, Intramuros has risen again. The moat once surrounding the walls was filled in by the Americans and now serves as a golf course. Today, the Walled City hosts cultural events, art exhibits, and historical reenactments, blending heritage with modern vibrance.

Visitor Tips

Best time to visit: Late afternoon for cooler weather and golden hour photos.

Must‑see spots: Fort Santiago, San Agustin Church, and the cobblestone streets near Plaza San Luis.

Extra experience: Ride a calesa (horse‑drawn carriage) for a nostalgic tour.

Nearby treats: Café Ilustrado and Barbara’s offer Filipino‑Spanish cuisine with ambiance.

Intramuros is not just a reminder of colonial history; it’s a testament to resilience. Every stone, every street, and every story reminds us that culture endures through time. It is a silent witness to centuries of struggle and resilience. Whenever I walk through its walls, I can’t help but think of the countless laborers who built this fortress stone by stone, the soldiers and civilians who camped here, and the generations who endured wars and upheavals. From the Spanish era to the Americans, and even during the Japanese occupation, these walls sheltered lives, bore witness to battles, and absorbed the echoes of both triumph and tragedy.

Today, Intramuros stands as a living testament: a place where history breathes, where resilience is etched into every cobblestone, and where the stories of those who came before us continue to inspire. It reminds us that culture and memory endure, even through the harshest storms of time.

There are movies you watch, and then there are movies you feel. Michael (2026), directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, belongs to the second category. As a lifelong fan of Michael Jackson, I walked into the theater with anticipation, but I walked out overwhelmed, awed, and strangely hollow... because Jaafar brought Michael back to life so vividly that I was reminded of how much I miss the real man, his voice, his dance, and his songs.

Watching Michael, the new biopic starring Jaafar Jackson, felt like opening a time capsule and stepping back into the magic of the King of Pop. From the very first frame, I was overwhelmed, not just by the spectacle, but by the uncanny way Jaafar brought Michael to life. His voice, his dance, his aura… it was as if the man himself had returned to the stage.

Jaafar as Michael: A Resurrection on Screen

Jaafar Jackson didn’t just play his uncle; he embodied him. From the tilt of the head to the rhythm in his steps, every gesture carried Michael’s essence. His voice had the softness, his movements had the electricity, and his aura radiated the same magnetism that made Michael the King of Pop. Watching Jaafar was like seeing Michael reborn - not an imitation, but a resurrection.

It left me longing - for the man himself, for the songs that defined my youth, for the controversies that shaped his legacy. It avoided the controversies, the pain, the shadows.

This line echoed in my mind as I left the theater... Jaafar gave us a reflection of Michael, but I still longed for the man himself.

Craft & Celebration

Antoine Fuqua’s direction is polished and reverent. The concert recreations are electrifying, the choreography breathtaking, and the soundtrack packed with Jackson’s greatest hits. The costumes and sets capture the eras perfectly, immersing us in the spectacle of Michael’s artistry. It was a celebration of artistry, a love letter to the music that changed the world. It is also, undeniably, a celebration of a man and his music that lives on through many decades, even after his death.

And true to his lyrics, that man in the mirror, created history that forever embedded not only in our memories, the music industry but the World history as well.

What Was Left in the Shadows

The film avoided the darker chapters, the allegations, the struggles, the pain. Perhaps that was intentional, a choice to honor rather than confront. At the end of the movie, they flashed "History continues..." It could be a part 2 for that undying longing for Michael, and since the movie only started in the beginning of his music career. Still, I left the theater knowing I would return another day, because one viewing wasn’t enough. Michael’s story, even in fragments, demands revisiting.

The Audience Experience

Fans around the world were dressed in sequined jackets, single gloves, and fedora hats. Some of them dancing their favorite song and moves of MJ. The energy was electric... a collective celebration of Michael’s legacy. We clapped along to the music, cheered at the dance sequences, and shared a collective nostalgia. Critics may call the film sanitized, but for us, it was a chance to relive the magic, to feel close to him again, even if only for a few hours.

That lyric came alive in the audience... united by Michael’s music, we were one family celebrating his legacy together.

Final Thoughts

Michael is not a perfect film, but it is a powerful one. It overwhelmed me, awed me, and left me longing for more. Jaafar Jackson gave us a gift: a glimpse of Michael reborn. SB19 WAS Trilogy Concert Experience

On April 18, 2026, the SMDC Festival Grounds in Parañaque City became the stage for one of the most ambitious concerts in Philippine music history. SB19’s Wakas at Simula: The Trilogy Finale was more than a show; it was a three-act narrative that celebrated their past, showcased their present, and hinted at their future.
For me, it was also personal. I watched it with my daughter, and together we experienced not just the spectacle, but the emotion of being part of history.

Before the Finale: SAW World Tour

The Wakas at Simula Trilogy Finale wasn’t SB19’s first grand stage. Before this, they launched the SAW World Tour, with its opening shows held on May 31 and June 1, 2025, at the Philippine Arena.
I was there too > Day 1, with my eldest daughter; Day 2, with my youngest (PWD) daughter. Each day carried its own magic: the scale of the Philippine Arena, the thrill of seeing SB19 command such a massive crowd, and the joy of sharing those moments with my daughters.

That tour set the tone for what would come next. It was proof that SB19 could take P-pop to world-class stages, and it prepared us, fans and family alike, for the emotional weight of the Trilogy Finale.
The night opened with fireworks bursting across the sky, igniting anticipation among thousands of A’TIN. Hours later, another round of fireworks closed the concert, symbolizing both “wakas” (ending) and “simula” (beginning).

Set 1 > Beginnings & Rise

SB19 made a dramatic entrance on a moving float, cloaked in mystery, before launching into their opening song, “DAM.” It was a bold choice, signaling strength and evolution. Then came the fireworks. After the fireworks, high-energy performances like “Go Up” and “Bazinga” reminded fans of their rise while affirming their present dominance.

Songs performed in Set 1 included:
- DAM (opening)
- Gento
- Go Up
- Bazinga
- VISA
- Crimzone

Set 2 > Going Global & Collaborations

This act highlighted SB19’s international reach and their role as industry builders. Collaborations with global performers electrified the crowd, while the introduction of 1Z Entertainment’s artists: Xonara and J2X, marked SB19’s transition from performers to mentors and pioneers.

Set 3 > Resolution & Renewal

This final act was the emotional heart of the concert, blending music, spectacle, and heartfelt dialogue as each member expressed their gratitude and memories while they were not yet known.

Pablo acknowledged the risks of staging such a massive outdoor finale, saying it was proof of how far they had come.
Stell and Josh spoke about their gratitude, reminding fans that every milestone was possible only because of A’TIN.
Ken reflected on the trilogy as both an ending and a beginning, tying it to Wakas at Simula.
Justin shared how surreal it felt to see their dreams unfolding before their eyes, calling the night “a shared journey with A’TIN.”

Songs Performed:

- QUIT > the centerpiece, with confetti showering the grounds. Along with the confetti, motivational paper notes inspired by SB19’s songs carried messages of strength and hope.
- Ilaw > a song of light and guidance, resonating deeply with the crowd.
- Liham > heartfelt and intimate, almost like a letter to A’TIN.
- Wakas > closing the trilogy with both farewell and renewal.

* Another fireworks display illuminated the sky. The sky erupted in color, signaling the transition into the last chapter of that night.
* Float Parade Finale: SB19 paraded among fans on a float. I remember pushing my daughter’s wheelchair forward so we could get closer - a moment of intimacy and joy we’ll never forget.

* There was a Drone Show courtesy of Project A’TIN Kronos: After the float and confetti, drones illuminated the night sky. They spelled out SB19’s name and formed shadow-like outlines of the members’ faces/features, a breathtaking tribute that made the finale feel larger than life.

Why It’s Called a Trilogy
The concert was a trilogy on two levels:

Albums as Chapters: Pagsibol (beginnings), Pagtatag (struggles), Simula at Wakas (closure and renewal).
Concert as Three Sets: Each act mirrored those themes, making the live performance itself a trilogy.

A Personal Reflection

Watching this with my daughters made the night unforgettable. From the Philippine Arena during the SAW World Tour to the Festival Grounds for the WAS Trilogy Finale, each concert became a family chapter. The confetti, motivational paper notes, the boys’ heartfelt gratitude to A'TIN and friends, and the show of drone lights sponsored by Project A'TIN Kronos were breathtaking, but the real magic was sharing the journey... seeing their eyes light up, hearing them sing along, and knowing that SB19’s story had become part of ours.

Beyond the concert itself, I felt the strength of family. My other kids accompanied us to the venue, waited patiently until the show finished, and helped book a car so we could all get home safely. Their support turned the night into more than just a fan experience; it became a collective memory of love, care, and togetherness.

Though in the Philippine Arena there was a designated area for PWDs and their companions, at SMDC Festival Grounds, we were not offered one, or perhaps there was no designated space for wheelchairs. Safety staff did assist us in reaching our seats and guiding us to the exit, but being a small PWD has its disadvantages: if people are seated or standing in front, you cannot really see the stage. Thankfully, the wider screens helped. Even with SVIP seats near the front of the stage, the view of the center stage was limited.

Closing Thoughts
The Wakas at Simula concert was more than a finale; it was a milestone. SB19 closed one chapter, but the story is far from over. For my daughters and me, it was a memory we’ll carry forever... proof that music can unite generations, inspire resilience, and remind us that every ending is also a beginning.

A'TIN could truly feel the boys' gratitude throughout the night... their words and actions showed how deeply they cared about their fans. The sincerity is what makes their journey resonate beyond music

I also hope that SB19 and their team continue to evaluate each concert based on different factors, from stage design to audience experiences, and strengthen inclusivity. They already provide accommodations for seniors, but how about for PWDs? They come in different kinds and needs, and ensuring accessible spaces would make future concerts even more meaningful. Inclusivity is not just about attendance; it’s about making sure every fan can truly share in the joy of the performance.

Maundy Thursday: Remembering the Last Supper (Luke 22:19–20), where Jesus shared bread and cup with His disciples, instituting Communion—a memorial meal of His sacrifice and a call to love and service.
Good Friday: The solemn day of Christ’s crucifixion (John 19:30), a reminder of the depth of His sacrifice.
Black Saturday: A day of silence and waiting, symbolizing the disciples’ grief and humanity’s longing for redemption.
Easter Sunday: The glorious resurrection (Matthew 28:6), the triumph of life over death, and the cornerstone of Christian faith.

Why the Bunny and Eggs?

In the mid-20th century, Iran under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi stood at a crossroads. Flush with oil wealth and backed by Western allies, the Shah envisioned a modern, secular Iran. Skyscrapers rose in Tehran, universities expanded, and women gained new rights. To many outsiders, Iran looked like a nation racing toward progress.
But modernization came at a cost. The Shah’s reforms often clashed with traditional values, leaving many Iranians feeling alienated. Rural communities saw little benefit from oil riches, while urban elites grew closer to Western lifestyles. Beneath the glitter of modernization, resentment simmered. Farmers watched their ancestral lands slip away, their hands calloused from generations of toil now empty of soil. In Tehran’s cafés, students debated injustice over steaming cups of tea, their voices rising above the hum of the city. Women, caught between tradition and reform, carried the weight of change in silence, their lives reshaped by laws written far from their homes.
