The Cleveland Indians have been selected to host the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, according to multiple sources, as reported by Cleveland.com’s Zack Meisel. An official announcement is expected tomorrow morning.

The decision comes as somewhat of a surprise, given that it will have been only 20 years since Cleveland’s Progressive Field (then Jacobs Field) hosted the event, while a few other American League teams have waited longer. This would seem to indicate MLB’s hesitation — or outright unwillingness — to give the game to cities whose ballparks it considers to be inadequate or in need of improvement, such Oakland’s o.Co Coliseum (which last hosted the ASG in 1987) and Tampa Bay’s Tropicana Field (which has never hosted it).

Furthermore, the Indians will be celebrating the ballpark’s 25th anniversary in 2019, and recently made a series of renovations to the park. The city’s successful hosting of the 2016 Republican National Convention, along with the Indians’ appearance in the 2016 World Series, might have been contributing factors as well.

Although we predicted that Toronto’s Rogers Centre would host the 2019 ASG, it’s possible that uncertainty regarding the field’s playing surface might be undermining such an opportunity. The Blue Jays, along with Tampa’s Rays, are the only remaining MLB teams whose ballparks have artificial turf. Although the Rogers Centre recently got an all-dirt infield, the Blue Jays are still working out the feasibility of adding natural grass, which would be a challenge because of both lighting and the way that the multipurpose ballpark was designed.

Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers are scheduled to open a new park in 2020, which would potentially put them in a position to host the 2021 ASG if the 2020 game goes to the Los Angeles Dodgers (who have waited since 1980), the Atlanta Braves (who are opening a new park this year), or another NL team. With the NL hosting four straight All-Star Games between 2015 and 2018, it’s unclear whether MLB will go back to alternating between leagues each year or if they will focus on showcasing new ballparks, regardless of their league affiliation.

]]> 2017 All-Star Game Logo Unveiled https://www.asgnews.com/2016/07/29/2017-all-star-game-logo-unveiled/ Fri, 29 Jul 2016 13:15:36 +0000 http://www.asgnews.com/?p=454 This week Miami Marlins president David Samson released the official image for the 2017 All-Star Game in Miami.  The logo was revealed to fans just before the beginning of the Marlins game against the Phillies.  MLB commissioner Rob Manfred was also on location for the big unveiling.  Merchandise with the logo went on sale immediately at the MLB store.

Reactions have varied, but most are positive.  In recent years, the graphic designers have done a great job incorporating distinctive of the city and the franchise into the logo.  For example, the 2016 logo from San Diego featured palm trees and an archway that resembled Petco Park.  The 2015 logo displayed the distinct mustache of Mr. Redlegs and the Reds’ wishbone-C icon.  Turning to 2017, spectators may notice that the color scheme draws from the Miami Marlins own scheme and a marlin’s fin is recognizable at the top of the star.  Many people appreciate that seems to pay homage to the design and decor of Marlins Park.

SAN DIEGO – Kansas City Royals teammates Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez homered in the second inning and drove in two runs each to lead the American League to a 4-2 victory over the National League in the 2016 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Hosmer was named the game’s MVP, finishing 2-for-3 in his first All-Star Game.

Corey Kluber pitched a scoreless second inning and was the winning pitcher for the AL, while NL starter Johnny Cueto took the loss after giving up three runs in one and two-thirds innings.

Jose Fernandez gave up the fourth and final AL run, when Hosmer singled in Edwin Encarnacion in the bottom of the third. Encarnacion entered the game earlier in the inning as a pinch-runner for David Ortiz, who was making his final All-Star Game appearance. Ortiz grounded out in the first inning and then walked against Fernandez. On Monday, Fernandez said he wanted to see Ortiz hit a home run and would throw him some 90 m.p.h. fastballs to give him that opportunity, but ultimately he went after the slugger with a mix of pitches and ended up walking him on a full count.  Ortiz received a standing ovation and was greeted by teammates on the field as he returned to the dugout.

For the second straight year, the AL doubled up on the NL, and the fourth pitch of the game was a home run. Last year, Mike Trout led off the game with a line-drive blast to right and ended up as the game’s MVP. This year, with the NL leading off as the road team, Kris Bryant hit a solo shot to left on the first pitch he saw from Chris Sale, after Ben Zobrist and Bryce Harper had recorded two quick outs on three pitches.

By singling in the first inning, Mike Trout now has a hit in five consecutive All-Star Games, and in fact has gone 5-for-5 in his first at-bat of each of those games.

After the AL took a 4-1 lead, Marcell Ozuna singled in Buster Posey to cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning, and that proved to be the last run of the game. The NL left 10 runners on base, missing several opportunities with multiple runners in scoring position. Perhaps the most dramatic was a bases-loaded strikeout of pinch-hitter Aledmys Diaz by Will Harris.

The NL had another runner on in the ninth, but the game ended when Nolan Arenado hit into a double play. Arenado appeared to think there were two outs, initially jogging toward first before speeding up.

The American League has won four straight All-Star Games, and is 22-6 against the NL since 1998.

SAN DIEGO – Trailing 3-0 after five innings, the World Futures scored 11 unanswered runs to defeat the USA Futures team 11-3 in the 2016 All-Star Futures Game at San Diego’s Petco Park. It was the World team’s first Futures Game victory since 2009, ending a six-game winning streak for USA.

Yoan Moncada of the Red Sox was named the game’s MVP after hitting a 406-foot, two-run home run in the eight inning, giving the World team its first lead. Moncada, who finished 2-for-5 with a stolen base, is the first player from Cuba to win the award.

Several other players made a significant impact, including Eloy Jimenez of the Cubs, who drove in the World team’s first run in the sixth, made a spectacular catch in right field in the seventh, and then capped off a seven-run ninth inning with a three-run shot that traveled 401 feet (pictured above), hitting the facing of the third deck of the Western Metal Supply Co. beyond left field.

For the USA team, Alex Bregman of the Astros stood out with a triple, double, and single, coming up a home run short of a cycle. However, Bregman’s error in the eight inning allowed what would prove to be the tying run to reach base.

Manuel Margot of the Padres was another standout, scoring two runs, driving in another, and robbing Cardinals prospect Carson Kelly of a home run in the sixth inning.

The 2016 All-Star Week festivities continue today with Workout Day (including the Home Run Derby) and conclude tomorrow with the 87th All-Star Game.

]]> 2016 Home Run Derby Participants and Bracket Announced https://www.asgnews.com/2016/07/08/2016-home-run-derby-participants-bracket/ Fri, 08 Jul 2016 18:34:54 +0000 http://www.asgnews.com/?p=392 Major League Baseball has released the bracket for the 2016 T-Mobile Home Run Derby, which is schedule for Monday.  The first round will feature Corey Seager vs. Mark Trumbo, Giancarlo Stanton vs. Robinson Cano, Wil Myers vs. Adam Duvall, and Carlos Gonzalez vs. Todd Frazier.  Frazier won last year’s Home Run Derby in a Reds jersey and did so as somewhat of a dark horse candidate in front of the hometown crowd.  The Padres’ Wil Meyers has the opportunity to do the same this year in San Diego.

To make things even more interesting for fans, MLB is hosting a bracket contest (much like the popular March Madness brackets).  Fans could win up to $25,000 for a correct bracket.  For more information on that contest, see the official site.

As part of the hype, MLB has released a free mobile game for the 2016 Home Run Derby.  It is available for download from their site as well as the Android and Apple app markets.
