How did my life change when I quit my 9–5? For the better.

Suddenly, we hear about this deadly virus; it’s spreading like wildfire, and it’s in our city!

No worries, we started wearing masks, and using bottle loads of sanitizer, hoping it would not get us. And it doesn’t.

But the government declares a lockdown!

Our manager asks us: Will you all come to the office and stay here if needed without going home?

Of course, we will. We assure him. We will do anything to keep this job.

No, we won’t.

We start backing out one by one after giving it some real thought.

A few days of chaos later, we stopped going to the office. We either work from our personal laptops or get computers delivered to our homes by the office.

And it’s exciting! I get to stay with my husband all day because he also stops going to his office.

We cook together, watch videos after work, and discuss every work-related thing with each other, My in-laws are happy to have us home, and my mother doesn’t have to worry if I reach the office on time.

You can tell by now that I am reminiscing about those days.

Time passes like this, and I get an appraisal I’d been waiting for. Woohoo!

I've got some extra money in my bank account now, but I can’t go out and spend it on travel, shopping, food, or movies.

So, what do I do?

I started my YouTube channel, and I started talking about books.

Oh, the fun!

Reading new books, making new friends, and having my videos watched.

But there’s no money in it. And I can’t see much growth. I need more. I need something else.

God hears me.

He thinks I should learn something new. He showed me this course on freelancing, and I can’t resist.

Remember I had that extra money in the bank?

I get ready to invest. It feels scary. But somehow, it feels right.

I enroll, start learning, and damn! Where was this for so long? This is fun, and this can earn me an income.

I started looking for clients.

Two months down the line, I am earning more than I did in my night-shift job.

But eventually, job + freelance work become difficult to handle.

I left my job. I don’t serve the notice period. I don’t even wait for the release letter. I leave.

I somehow know I won’t look back.

And I don’t.

Present

That was a long intro, but I couldn’t help it. It came naturally. I didn’t plan it. (P.S. That’s the beauty of writing from your own experience.)

But here’s how quitting my 9-to-5 changed my life.

🔥 The revelation

The joy of discovering that you can monetize your skills without finding a new job is unexplainable.

I have always wanted to try content writing.

And I looked for jobs in my city looking for content writers.

But the pay was so low that I could never switch. And I had come to terms with it.

But things were different now.

I was a content writer who got paid well and worked with international and Indian clients. All from the comfort of her home! Crazy, I know.

🔥 The confidence

It didn’t take me too long to understand that I didn’t need a conventional job to earn money.

And that is powerful.

I didn’t need to work a night shift and stay away from my husband when I wanted to be with him.

I became more and more confident as I learned more and more.

Most people around me lack this confidence, and I would have never known if everything didn’t happen the way it did.

🔥 The potential

I started as a content writer but now primarily work as a social media manager.

1-2 years down the line, you might see me do something else.

And that’s the thing about freelancing. There’s so much potential that you don’t have to stick with just one thing.

Also, you realize there’s so much potential in yourself!

🔥 The luxury

I always had a fetish for Apple products.

But I knew they were unattainable for me because of my salary. It was not enough for me to afford Apple products.

But, all thanks to my freelancing income, I could buy myself an iPhone and a MacBook.

Not just these. I could also afford other little luxuries like going on vacations without worrying about money, spending more on the household, buying books I wanted to read, and many more that I cannot remember now.

🔥 The growth

I believe we are all born so we can grow.

And the growth that I was able to experience after leaving my 9–5 is something I never would have experienced had I not quit.

For example, making YouTube videos, communicating with clients, attending offline client meetings, and doing masterclasses, have improved my interpersonal and communication skills.

Working with other freelancers has helped me improve my team-building skills.

Handling my finances and planning for taxes made me more aware of managing money the right way.

And juggling multiple projects has helped me become better at time management.

And my 9-5 might have helped me learn these too, but it would have taken years!

Working from anywhere!

These are some ways quitting my 9-to-5 has changed my life, and I am looking forward to all the other changes it brings over time.

My Chaotic Marriage Helped Me Evolve!

Irealized I never wrote anything about my married life, yet there’s so much I have to share with you.
I have been married for 4+ years. And the first 2 years were pure chaos.
In PAKISTAN, or at least with me, we live with our in-laws after marriage.
Yes, you can move out, but that wasn’t an option for me as my in-laws are old, and my husband is the only son (which means he is supposed to care for them).
If you are not from PAKISTAN, I know you will find many things weird, but even PAKISTAN is changing, and very soon, this culture of living with parents or in-laws might not be there!
Now, let me give you a background check.
I belong to a family where my parents never differentiated between a daughter and a son. Okay, I mean, they don’t have a son in the first place.
But they have raised me to be an independent woman who earns her money and knows how to take a stand for herself whenever required.
A son is considered more important than a daughter in my husband’s family. My in-laws had five daughters before they finally had a son.
My mother-in-law was treated poorly by her in-laws when she lived in the village because she could not give birth to a male child.
There’s a lot of trauma, conditioning, and nuance in this.

I was in a relationship with my husband for 10 years before we married, and he is nothing like his family. His mentality is very different, and he is a gem.
And if I’ve been able to survive this marriage, it’s because of him.
The first 2 years were chaotic because of the differences of opinion between me and my in-laws and my decision to take a stand for myself.
My mother-in-law didn’t want me to wear pajamas inside the house, or jeans and a T-shirt outside.
She wanted me to handle all the household chores and not involve my husband much.
They wanted me to leave my night-shift job, but I couldn’t because I didn’t have an option back then, and I was also responsible for taking care of my parents.
They wanted me to visit my parents less often because married women are not supposed to do that.
They wanted me to conceive as soon as possible because that’s why people get married, right?
I can go on and on. But I don’t want to remember all the incidents that once traumatized me.
And don’t worry, I always took a stand for myself and did whatever I felt was right. And my husband gave me full support.
My in-laws now know we will not go by what they think is right. So, there’s no more chaos. We still get into arguments sometimes, but I try to stay away because I know I can’t change their conditioning.
Here are a few lessons I learned from my marriage.

1. You can get through everything if you have a good partner.

I am not against staying with in-laws or parents. It is a part of PAKISAN's culture, although it is changing.
But if you have a partner who supports you with everything and doesn’t ask you to change because of what others think, you will get through everything.
I don’t hate my in-laws, but I used to. My husband helped me heal, made me empathetic, and helped me focus on things that make me a better person instead of overthinking what my in-laws and other family members thought or said.

2. You must take a stand for yourself.

You will be shocked at how many PAKISTANI women abandon their dreams and aspirations after marriage. They live exactly as my in-laws want. They take care of the household chores, and the family members, give birth, and that’s it.
There’s nothing wrong with this if the woman genuinely wants such a life, but that’s not often the case.
I was not brought up that way, where I could sacrifice my dreams to live the life that was expected of me. And I am happy that I always took a stand for myself.

3. Stop hurting them back.

When you go through all the chaos I mentioned, the first thing that might come to mind is that you want to hurt them, maybe with words—an argument.
And that happened a lot initially.
But, eventually, I realized these are broken people who don’t even understand empathy, spirituality, psychology, and so many other things that make you human.
And that’s sad. You can’t even teach them because of the mental blockages they have.
So, I stopped trying, and I stopped thinking of hurting them back, even when they said something that hurt me.

4. Acknowledge the good things too.

I know this is tough. I know this takes a lot. But understand that no human is all black or white. Everyone is a shade of gray.
Despite all the clashes between me and my in-laws, I started noticing that they have some — sorry, a lot — of good qualities.
They would forget and forgive easily.
They loved my husband like crazy, so they tried to accept me because they understood how much my husband loved me!
They cared about my health, lifestyle, and what I was eating, even when I wasn’t the kind of daughter-in-law they wanted.
I am tearing up while I write this, but there’s more that I can’t seem to recollect right now.
From someone who used to hate her in-laws to someone who loves them despite all the differences, my marriage has truly helped me evolve as a human being.

Stay up-to-date and informed by taking an active interest in emerging research and industry trends.

Note that the field of prompt engineering is less than 2 years old, so the prompt engineer role may differ from one company to the next, and, just like any other job, the salary for prompt engineers also varies.

The salary for similar jobs in other companies might not be as generous as Anthropic. Here’s an estimation by Indeed for an AI prompt engineer role at Boston Childrens Hospital.

Most of us struggle with self-control at one point or another.

“But why?” you cry, as you reach for the remote instead of your running shoes. Why is it that you have no self-control? Let’s get to the bottom of this.

But brace yourself — it might be a bit of a bumpy ride.

The Real Enemy — Habit or Willpower?

Here’s the thing, folks. For years, we’ve been told that willpower is the answer. “Just try harder,” they say. “Don’t give in,” they insist.

But hey, let’s be real. If it were as simple as that, wouldn’t we all be self-control superheroes by now?

Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty. Imagine your brain as a prehistoric beast.

This old chap’s primary job? To keep you safe and alive. Our ancient ancestors, roaming around in loincloths, needed quick, automatic responses to survive.

So, our brains developed habits — behaviors that could be repeated without wasting precious cognitive resources. Sounds pretty smart, right?

But wait, there’s more. Those sweet-toothed among us can relate. Our prehistoric buddy also developed a preference for sweet, fatty, high-energy foods. Back then, it was a survival mechanism. Today? Not so much.

Now, we’re surrounded by sweet treats and comforting carbs, but our brains are still stuck in the Stone Age, cheering us on every time we reach for another slice of pizza.

I had to do something different. I thought long and hard, and at one point, I felt overwhelmed and doubted if I could take on this challenge.
