WMBA Community League Opens Oct 17–18 as More Than 200 Teams Begin Fall/Winter Season

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) Community League begins its 2026–27 Fall/Winter season this weekend, October 17–18. League games and Fall/Winter Skills Development Program sessions are scheduled to begin across Winnipeg.

The WMBA’s community league serves players in age divisions from 7–8 co-ed through the 16–18 boys and 15–17 girls divisions. Teams are formed through community centres and compete in a city-wide schedule. Game times and locations are posted on the WMBA website. Players and families with questions are encouraged to contact their coach or convenor.

The WMBA website’s “Teams” menu is organized into two age groups. The divisions and team names listed there are below. Select a division heading to view its games, standings, leaders, rosters and other league information.

Basketball Manitoba has announced the details for its upcoming Super Coaches Clinic, scheduled to take place online on Friday, October 23, 2026. Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, the clinic offers coaches of all levels a unique opportunity to learn from some of North America's top basketball minds for a registration fee of only $40.00.

The annual Super Coaches Clinic continues to serve as a premier professional development opportunity, providing practical tools and strategies to support coaches at all levels.

The clinic will run on the same day as the province-wide 'SAGE' in-service day. The registration deadline is 12 noon on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

CLINIC NOTES:

Attend the full day of presentations online for only $40.00 CAD.
Each presentation will be delivered virtually via an online webinar. The session will run for 60-75 minutes, with the remaining time reserved for a Q&A session with attendees and the presenter.
Attendees can post questions to each presenter, and they will be answered live.
All attendees will receive a digital copy of the Super Coach Clinic manual with registration.
All presentations will be recorded for later playback by clinic attendees.
We will present door prizes throughout the day.

2026 SUPER COACHES CLINIC PRESENTERS

Sandy Brondello — Head Coach, Toronto Tempo

Sandy Brondello is one of the most accomplished coaches in women’s basketball and serves as the inaugural Head Coach of the Toronto Tempo, Canada’s first WNBA franchise. A two-time WNBA champion and former WNBA Coach of the Year, Brondello has led the Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty to four WNBA Finals appearances, winning championships with both organizations. She ranks among the WNBA’s all-time leaders in career wins, games coached, and playoff victories.

A native of Queensland, Australia, Brondello has also served as head coach of the Australian national team since 2017, guiding the Opals to a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. As a player, she was a WNBA All-Star and three-time Olympic medallist before being inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. Known for her leadership, championship experience, player development, and ability to build strong team cultures, Brondello brings a wealth of knowledge from the highest levels of international and professional basketball to the Basketball Manitoba Super Coaches Clinic.

Carly Clarke — Assistant Coach, Toronto Tempo

Carly Clarke is an accomplished Canadian basketball coach with more than a decade of experience at the university, professional, and international levels. A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Clarke most recently served as head coach of the Toronto Metropolitan University women’s basketball program from 2012 to 2026. During her tenure, she led TMU to the 2022 U SPORTS national championship, an undefeated season, and multiple OUA titles. She was also recognized as OUA Coach of the Year across all sports and established TMU as one of the leading women’s basketball programs in the country.

Clarke has been a longstanding member of the Canadian women’s national team coaching staff, serving as an assistant coach at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Her international experience also includes leading Canada’s U19 national team to FIBA World Cup bronze medals and serving as head coach of the U23 national team. Clarke previously presented at the Basketball Manitoba Super Coaches Clinic in 2022 and currently serves as an assistant coach with the Toronto Tempo, Canada’s first WNBA franchise. Known for her expertise in player development, defensive systems, game preparation, and program culture, Clarke brings a thoughtful and highly experienced perspective to coaches and athletes at every level.

Kevin Wilson — Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Toronto Tempo

Kevin Wilson is an accomplished basketball performance professional who currently serves as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Toronto Tempo of the WNBA. He previously worked with the Los Angeles Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA, as well as the Thunder’s G League affiliate, where he was named G League Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year. Wilson has also worked with Canada Basketball, the Canadian Elite Basketball League, the British Basketball League, Basketball Scotland, and other high-performance basketball organizations.

Wilson holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy, a Bachelor of Kinesiology, and a diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and holds additional certifications in medical acupuncture, sports massage therapy, and performance enhancement. A former varsity basketball player at Brock University and Fleming College, Wilson is also the founder of the Canadian Basketball Performance Network, which supports the education and development of young medical and performance professionals working in basketball. His experience across basketball, rehabilitation, strength training, and athlete development provides coaches with a practical and comprehensive approach to performance.

Paul Kelleher — Basketball Ireland Coach

Paul Kelleher is a respected Irish basketball coach with more than 20 years of international coaching experience. He currently serves as an assistant coach with the Ireland senior men’s team and as a Basketball Ireland Academy coach with the boys’ and girls’ U13 programs and girls’ U15 program. Kelleher has also coached in Ireland’s National League with UCC Blue Demons, Neptune, and Glanmire, giving him extensive experience working with players and teams across both the domestic and international levels.

Kelleher has served as head coach of Ireland’s U16 and U18 boys’ national teams, as well as Ireland’s senior and underage 3x3 international teams. He led Ireland’s U18 program to qualification for the 2018 European Championships and the U17 program to the 2023 European Championships, narrowly missing World Championship qualification after a two-point semifinal loss to Spain. Kelleher was also an assistant coach with Ireland’s senior women’s team that earned a silver medal at the Small Countries Championships. With a strong background in player development, international competition, team preparation, and coach education, Kelleher is well suited to deliver an engaging and practical online clinic session.

Kirby Schepp — Head Coach, Men’s Basketball, University of Manitoba

Kirby Schepp is entering his 18th season as head coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s basketball team in 2026–27. He has guided Manitoba to 12 consecutive Canada West playoff appearances and five conference Final Four appearances, including in 2016, 2017, 2020, 2023, and 2025. Schepp holds the most Canada West regular-season wins in Bisons program history, with a record of 182–142, while his 278 overall victories rank second all-time at the university. He also led the Bisons to historic 16–4 and 18–2 regular seasons, earning two Bison Sports Coach of the Year honours.

Schepp has been part of the Canadian men’s national team program for more than a decade, coaching medal-winning teams at FIBA events, including Canada’s gold-medal-winning Junior National Team at the 2017 World Championships and a bronze-medal team at the 2010 World 17U Championships. He led Canada to a historic silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, coached Canada’s U16 national team in 2019, and served as head coach of Egypt’s national team in 2023. Schepp has coached future NBA players including Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Nik Stauskas, and Dillon Brooks. A University of Winnipeg and University of Victoria graduate, he is an NCCP Master Learning Facilitator who has trained hundreds of coaches. He is also the most active presenter with the Basketball Manitoba Super Coaches Clinic, and his recent video presentations have been viewed more than one million times.

FEMALE CAMP UPDATE: Canada Basketball Hosting Age Group National Team ID Camp in Wpg for Females Born 2008 to 2012

UPDATE: Please note that the girls’ U16 and U19 National Team ID Camp sessions are now scheduled for Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22.

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce Mike MacKay, Director, Technical Development for Canada Basketball, will be in Winnipeg to host the female ID sessions. Mike Meeks, Manager of Youth Player Development for Canada Basketball, will host the male sessions. Canada Basketball will evaluate Manitoba male and female talent for potential invitations to the U16 and U19 National Team training camps.

Athletes are to attend the Saturday session. Decisions will be made after Saturday's session, and selected athletes will be invited to Sunday's session.

U16 TEAM (ATHLETES BORN IN 2011 & 2012) - will compete in the 2027 FIBA Americas Qualifying Tournament for a berth in the 2028 U17 WORLD CUP

Manitoba Awarded 2028 North American Indigenous Games; Basketball Plans Include 14U, 16U and 19U Male and Female Teams

The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) Council has announced the conditional award of the 2028 Games to Norway House Cree Nation and the Southern Chiefs’ Organization, with competitions and activities planned for Winnipeg and other Manitoba locations from July 9–23, 2028.

For the basketball community, the Games will welcome Indigenous athletes from across Canada and the United States to compete in Manitoba. The planned basketball age divisions will be 14U, 16U and 19U, with male and female teams in each division. Further details regarding basketball venues, competition schedules and eligibility requirements will be shared as planning advances.

The Games are expected to bring together upwards of 5,250 Indigenous athletes, coaches and team officials from across Turtle Island. Alongside traditional and contemporary sport competitions, a major cultural program will celebrate the diversity, strength and traditions of Indigenous nations in Manitoba and across North America.

Basketball’s inclusion will give young Indigenous players an opportunity to demonstrate their skills, represent their communities and build connections through the game. Hosting the event in Manitoba will also provide local basketball supporters with an opportunity to experience an international Indigenous sporting and cultural gathering.

The conditional award follows a national bid process and remains subject to several key milestones before a formal Host Agreement is signed. The NAIG Council, Norway House Cree Nation and the Southern Chiefs’ Organization will work with government and community partners to meet those requirements and establish the Host Society responsible for planning and delivering the Games.

Partners involved in the next stage include the Government of Canada, Government of Manitoba, City of Winnipeg and Winnipeg Economic Development & Tourism.

Additional information about the Games, including venues, sport programming, volunteer opportunities and other planning milestones, will be announced as preparations progress.

The North American Indigenous Games are an international multi-sport and cultural celebration bringing together Indigenous youth from across Turtle Island. The Games provide young athletes with opportunities to compete at a high level while celebrating Indigenous cultures, traditions and community.

Manitoba Bisons to Unveil Newly Branded Home Court Nov. 1 During Canada West Basketball Doubleheader vs. Brandon Bobcats

The Manitoba Bisons will unveil their newly branded basketball court on Sunday, November 1 during a Canada West doubleheader against the Brandon Bobcats at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

The afternoon will provide fans with their first look at the new Bisons court as Manitoba opens its 2026-27 regular season home schedule. The women's game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3:00 p.m..

The event will feature a family-friendly game-day atmosphere and the opportunity to see both Bisons basketball teams in action against their provincial rivals from Brandon.

SPACE FILLING UP: 2026 Junior Officials Basketball Clinics Registration Now Open

Basketball Manitoba, in partnership with the Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials, is pleased to offer the 'Junior Officials Development Program' (JODP) clinics for people new to refereeing who are 15 years of age or older. The program is designed to improve the overall level of officiating in Junior High/Middle School and minor basketball leagues.

The clinic registration fee of $75.00 has been set for the 2026-2027 basketball season.

Basketball Manitoba has announced that it is working with Canada Basketball to connect with Manitoba clubs, schools, camps, leagues, and community organizations interested in hosting Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA programming for the Fall 2026 season.

The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA program is designed to support organizations in delivering structured, developmentally appropriate grassroots basketball programming for youth. The program can be added to an existing basketball system or used as the foundation to create a new local program.

Organizations across Manitoba are encouraged to consider the opportunity, including community clubs, school programs, camps, clinics, house leagues, skill development programs, and other local basketball initiatives.

Program support includes ready-to-use curriculum and session plans, official Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA branded apparel and equipment, coach education resources, marketing and promotional support, and operational guidance from Canada Basketball.

For Fall 2026, the program will include an updated curriculum with new games, lessons, and refreshed life-skills content, along with flexible jersey options at multiple price points to help meet the needs of different programs and budgets.

The program can support a wide range of delivery models, including house league programming, skill development programs, school-based programming, community basketball initiatives, camps, and clinics.

Interested Manitoba organizations are encouraged to begin conversations early, as onboarding, compliance, registration setup, and materials ordering timelines are all part of the planning process for the Fall 2026 season.

REMINDER TO ALL COACHES: Complete Your Respect in Sport Online Certification Today

RE-CERTIFY NOW: Sport Manitoba Coaching is reminding all Manitoba-based basketball coaches that they must complete the Respect in Sport (RiS) recertification. All coaches at any level in Manitoba are required to recertify every 5 years. Manitoba was the first province to make the RiS program mandatory, and we are equally proud to be the first to make recertification mandatory. Basketball Manitoba is pleased to partner with Sport Manitoba and embrace the Respect in Sport program to help ensure a safe and positive sports environment for all participants. There is no cost for Manitoba coaches to complete this program.

If you completed the course more than 5 years ago, to maintain your status as an active basketball coach in Manitoba, you will need to complete the new online system now. The online course has been dramatically revamped and updated since its initial launch in 2007. It touches on contemporary topics that coaches may experience in today's game, including social media, cyber-bullying, hazing, gender identification and more. The course takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to complete and can be completed in 20 to 30-minute pieces.

REMINDER: Canada Basketball Launches Free Parent/Guardian eLearning Module to Support Youth Athlete Development

Basketball Manitoba is sharing a new national resource from Canada Basketball designed to strengthen the role of parents and guardians in youth basketball. The newly released eLearning module, “A Parent/Guardian’s Role in Youth Basketball,” is now available through Game Plan and The Locker in both English and French.

The interactive module is primarily aimed at parents and guardians but is also a valuable tool for coaches, clubs, officials, and anyone involved in the development of young athletes. The content focuses on practical, real-world scenarios and guided learning to help create positive, safe, and meaningful sport experiences.

Key learning areas include:

Supporting long-term athlete development
Promoting performance safety and overall well-being
Understanding how to effectively support athletes on game day
Encouraging stewardship, enjoyment, and a positive sport environment

The course emphasizes that everyone involved in the game plays a role in shaping the experience for young athletes and contributing to the long-term health of basketball in Canada.

The module is free, self-paced, and accessible at any time. Participants can immediately apply what they learn through built-in reflection tools and action planning resources.

Basketball Manitoba encourages all member clubs, coaches, and organizations to share this resource directly with parents and guardians within their programs to help reinforce a consistent, positive approach to youth sport.

Basketball Manitoba Athlete Recommendation Form

Basketball Manitoba has now created a new "Athlete Recommendation Form" that invites submissions from across the province for high-potential athletes who could be considered for future membership in the Manitoba Provincial Team program, the Targeted Athlete Strategy and/or the Targeted Athlete Program and Wheelchair Basketball opportunities. We are seeking support from the basketball community to help identify future talent and ensure we always represent the province at national and international events, including the Canada Games, with our best.

If you know of or coach an athlete currently aged 12 to 17 years old in Manitoba that you think could be a future member of either program, please complete and submit this form. This will be an ongoing feature of Basketball Manitoba's programming, and there is no deadline in place to submit this data, as it will be collected on a continual basis moving forward.

"Guard Your Game, Protect Yourself"; On Court Sport Safety Campaign is Back

As the basketball seasons at the club, community club and adult levels of play are back for the fall, Basketball Manitoba is pleased to continue its on-court safety campaign to educate players, coaches, referees, parents and spectators on the important topics of concussions and the wearing of jewelry and mouth guards while playing basketball.

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to share its on-court sport safety campaign, "Guard Your Game, Protect Yourself." This campaign aims to promote the importance of wearing mouthguards, refraining from wearing jewelry, and raising awareness about the risks of concussions while playing basketball at all levels, from youth leagues to adult recreational games.

Basketball is a high-energy sport that brings players of all ages and skill levels together, fostering a sense of community, camaraderie, and healthy competition. However, with the exhilaration of the game, there are risks involved, including dental injuries, accidents related to jewelry, and the potential for concussions. Basketball Manitoba recognizes these risks and is committed to making the sport safer for everyone.

The "Guard Your Game, Protect Yourself" campaign is designed to raise awareness and educate basketball players, coaches, parents, and fans about the importance of three essential safety practices:

Concussion Awareness: While basketball is a non-contact sport, concussions can still occur due to falls, collisions, or head injuries during the game. Basketball is tied with soccer as the 3rd leading sport in Manitoba that sees concussions occur (behind only hockey and football). Basketball Manitoba is committed to educating players, coaches, and parents about the signs and symptoms of concussions and the importance of proper assessment and recovery. Immediate recognition and appropriate management of concussions are crucial to safeguarding the long-term health of basketball participants. We have created a dedicated basketball concussion website which provides a large number of resources tied to the reduction of and treatment of concussions. Mouthguard Use: Basketball is a fast-paced and dynamic sport, and collisions can occur during games. Dental injuries, such as chipped or broken teeth, are not uncommon. To mitigate these risks, Basketball Manitoba strongly encourages all players to wear mouthguards while on the court. Properly fitted mouthguards offer protection against injuries that can be painful and costly. The best mouthguards are those that are custom-fitted by a dental professional. Contact your dentist or Reflections Dental below about your best option for a properly fitting mouthguard.

Jewelry Restrictions: Wearing jewelry, such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings or any exposed piercings, during basketball games poses a serious safety hazard. Not only does jewelry increase the risk of injury to the player wearing it, but it can also cause harm to others on the court, let alone damage to the jewelry itself. Basketball Manitoba requires players to remove all jewelry before stepping onto the court to prevent avoidable accidents. Taping earrings, jewelry or other piercings (unless a medical exception in writing has been given directly by Basketball Manitoba or the MHSAA) is not an alternative to removing them while participating in games or practices. Details on items that are and are not permitted to be worn in basketball games can be found on page 13 of the current FIBA Basketball Rulebook.

By emphasizing these safety measures and concussion awareness, Basketball Manitoba aims to reduce the number of concussions, dental injuries, and accidents related to jewelry during basketball games. The Harlem Globetrotters will bring their 2027 Rivalry Tour to Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, with the game scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.

The tour will feature the Harlem Globetrotters facing the Washington Generals along with a new lineup of rivals. The 2027 production will also include new interactive elements designed to involve fans throughout the event, along with a pre-game tip-off party beginning when doors open.

Mini Ballers Winter 2027 Registration Opens October 2 for Ages 1-8

Mini Ballers will open registration for its Winter 2027 basketball and movement classes on Friday, October 2, 2026. Families with a preferred location, day or class time are encouraged to review the options when registration opens, as several fall classes filled and developed waitlists.

During fall registration, all classes at Templeton Community Centre in the Maples/Riverbend area were waitlisted. At Westdale Community Centre in Charleswood, Preschool 1, Preschool 2 and School Age classes were among the most requested. Linden Woods Community Centre’s School Age and School Age 3x3 classes also filled quickly, with 20 players registered in the Thursday 3x3 class. Its Tuesday morning class for children ages 1 to 3½ was full as well.

Mini Ballers offers age appropriate basketball and movement programming for children ages 1 to 8 in Manitoba. Families can review class information and register through the Mini Ballers website beginning October 2.

Canada Basketball Announces New 14U Club National Championships for May 2027

Canada Basketball has announced the launch of its inaugural U14 Club National Championships, which will bring together boys’ and girls’ club teams from across Canada during the May long weekend in 2027.

For Manitoba, the champion and finalist teams from both the 14U boys’ and girls’ divisions (players born in 2013 or later) of the Peg City Club Basketball League will be recognized to attend the national championships as the province’s representatives. This will give four Manitoba teams—two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams—the opportunity to compete against leading club programs from other provinces and territories across Canada.

The inaugural event is expected to feature 64 teams, with 32 teams in each boys’ and girls’ division competing for national titles. The competitions will run concurrently.

The championships will expand Canada Basketball’s domestic competition pathway by establishing a national event at the U14 club level. The competition will emphasize developmentally appropriate play aligned with Canada Basketball’s Long-Term Basketball Development Model, along with standards in coaching, officiating, safe sport and fair play.

The event will also support development pathways for athletes, coaches and officials, while giving many young players their first opportunity to participate in a national club championship.

The host location, full competition dates, and additional event details will be announced later.

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce its Wheelchair Basketball Schools Program for the 2026-27 school year, following the integration of Basketball Manitoba and Wheelchair Basketball operations.

The program is a school-based experience designed to raise awareness, build understanding, and generate excitement for wheelchair basketball across Manitoba. The program provides students with a meaningful, hands-on introduction to the sport while reinforcing inclusion, teamwork, coordination, and sportsmanship.

Participating schools host a wheelchair basketball experience delivered during regular physical education classes or designated lunch periods. Basketball Manitoba supplies and delivers all required equipment, including sport wheelchairs, ensuring the program is fully accessible and delivered to a high standard with minimal logistical burden on schools.

The program is supported and launched by Joey Johnson, who plays a key role in introducing the sport to students and staff.

About Joey Johnson

Joey Johnson (pictured above, centre) is one of the most accomplished wheelchair basketball athletes in the world and a proud Manitoba product. A graduate of Lorette Collegiate, Joey was diagnosed at age eight with a degenerative hip disease that prevented him from participating in able-bodied sports. That challenge opened the door to wheelchair basketball, where he went on to build an elite international career.

Joey attended the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, earning All-American honours and leading his team to three National Championships in the late 1990s. Internationally, he represented Canada at five Paralympic Games, winning Gold Medals in 2000, 2004, and 2012, along with a Silver Medal in 2008. He also captured Gold at the 2006 World Championships and the 1997 Junior World Championships.

At the provincial level, Joey represented Manitoba at the club and provincial team levels for 19 consecutive years. Professionally, he competed in Australia and across Europe, winning numerous international titles and serving as both a player and player-coach.

In recognition of his impact on the sport, Joey has been inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame (2013), the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (2016), and the Canada Basketball Hall of Fame (2023). WMBA Opens Registration for 2026–27 Fall/Winter Skills Development Program for Ages 7-17

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) has opened registration for its 2026–27 Fall/Winter Skills Development Program. The progressive training series is designed to help young athletes build confidence, improve fundamentals and apply their skills in game situations. Sessions will be delivered by Manitoba skills coaches and current university athletes.

Participants can register for the nine-week fall session, running October 17–December 13, 2026; the nine-week winter session, running January 9–March 7, 2027; or the full 18-week program. Sessions are scheduled on the day WMBA players do not play league games.

At Lindenwoods on Saturdays, the girls ages 13–17 begin at 2:00 p.m., boys ages 14–15 at 3:00 p.m. and boys ages 16–17 at 4:00 p.m. At MBCI on Saturdays, those groups begin at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., respectively. Sunday sessions begin at 2:00 p.m. for co-ed ages 7–8, 3:00 p.m. for girls ages 9–12 and 4:00 p.m. for boys ages 9–13.

Registration for current WMBA players is $90 for either nine-week session or $160 for the full program. For non-WMBA players, the fees are $125 for either session or $230 for the full program. A $9 Canada Basketball fee also applies.

Basketball Manitoba is proud to announce and begin the official countdown of the Top 50 Impact Moments in Manitoba Basketball History, a special 50th anniversary project celebrating the people, teams, achievements, events and developments that have helped shape the game across the province.

As Basketball Manitoba marks 50 years since the organization was formally established in 1976, the Top 50 Impact Moments project looks back across five decades — and acknowledges the important foundations laid before 1976 — to tell the broader story of basketball in Manitoba.

The project is about more than championships and final scores. The Top 50 includes outstanding athletes and teams, coaches and officials, builders and volunteers, programs and organizations, facilities, professional basketball, major events, historic firsts, changes to how the game is played, and other developments that left a lasting impact on basketball in Manitoba.

A committee representing decades of experience throughout the Manitoba basketball community was assembled to help identify the final selections. Committee members submitted their own recommendations, public nominations were gathered, similar submissions were combined, and the group met to discuss the historical context and impact of the candidates before determining and ranking the final 50 from over 150 submitted moments.

The guiding principle throughout the process was impact — recognizing moments that helped change, grow, elevate or define basketball in Manitoba.

The organization we know today as Basketball Manitoba began as the “Manitoba Amateur Basketball Association” (MABA) on October 29, 1976. Over those 50 years, basketball has grown tremendously, with many significant events that have helped expand the game. We compiled the following list of the most notable moments based on input from many sources. We realize that there were many significant events that occurred before 1976, but for the sake of this list, it is limited to, and in celebration of, the 50 years of Basketball Manitoba. It is hoped that it will create some real interest and some discussion, even debate.

Basketball Manitoba Reveals Top 10 Impact Moments in Manitoba Basketball History as 50th Anniversary Countdown Concludes

Basketball Manitoba has reached the culmination of its 50th anniversary Top 50 Impact Moments project, revealing the final ten selections and the number one Impact Moment in Manitoba Basketball History.

The Top 10 were unveiled on the evening of Saturday, September 26, 2026, as part of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Dinner at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.

The final reveal completes a five-part countdown produced and voiced by Joey Slattery, following earlier releases of #50–41, #40–31, #30–21 and #20–11, which can be found below.

The Top 10 reflect some of the most significant achievements, breakthroughs, dynasties, international accomplishments and community developments from the past five decades.

#10 — Four Manitobans Compete at the 1976 Olympic Games
Bob Town, Martin Riley, Coleen Dufresne and Angie Johnson all represented Canada in basketball at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. The Games were the first Olympics hosted in Canada and the first to include women's basketball, making the presence of four Manitobans on the Olympic stage an extraordinary milestone.

#9 — Team Manitoba 17U Boys and Girls Win National Gold — 2014
In the same summer, at the same site in Edmonton, both Manitoba's 17U boys and girls provincial teams won Canada Basketball national championships over Ontario. It marked the first male provincial team gold medal for Manitoba and only the second for the female program.

#8 — Winnipeg Sea Bears Professional Basketball Era — 2023 to Present
The Winnipeg Sea Bears brought professional basketball back to Manitoba in 2023, debuting in front of more than 9,000 fans at Canada Life Centre. The franchise later hosted the CEBL Championship Weekend in 2025 and captured its first league championship in August 2026, with Winnipeg's Simon Hildebrandt scoring the winning basket in front of a league-record crowd of approximately 12,500.

#7 — Three-Point Line, Shot Clock and Game Clock Changes — 1983, 1987 & 2004
Three major changes reshaped the Manitoba game: the introduction of tenth-of-a-second game clock displays in 1983, the three-point line in 1987 and the shot clock in 2004. Together, they modernized the sport and changed pace, spacing, late-game strategy and player development.

#6 — Bisons Women's National Championship Dynasty — 1988, 1995 & 1996
The University of Manitoba captured the 1988 CIAU national championship and later added back-to-back titles in 1995 and 1996. Led by Coleen Dufresne, the Bisons became one of Canada's elite women's university basketball programs.

#5 — Todd MacCulloch Reaches the NBA — 1999
Todd MacCulloch was selected 47th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1999 NBA Draft, becoming the first Manitoban drafted into the NBA. He later appeared in two NBA Finals and continued his impact through the Todd Mac Hoops School and multiple Hall of Fame inductions.

#4 — University of Manitoba Bisons Men's National Championship — 1976
The University of Manitoba captured the 1976 CIAU Men's National Championship, becoming the first Manitoba university basketball program to win a national title and setting a new benchmark for the province.

#3 — Brandon Bobcats Men's National Championship Dynasty — 1987, 1988, 1989 & 1996
Under Jerry Hemmings, Brandon University won three consecutive CIAU titles from 1987 through 1989 and added another in 1996. The Bobcats became one of the most celebrated dynasties in Canadian university basketball.

#2 — Wesmen Women 88-Game Winning Streak and National Three-Peat — 1992–1995
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen women won 88 consecutive games and three straight CIAU national championships, producing one of the most dominant runs in North American university basketball. The streak ended in a nationally televised, standing-room-only game against the Manitoba Bisons at the Duckworth Centre.

#1 — Creation and Growth of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association — 1997 to Present
Founded by Mike Ruta in 1997, the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association brought community basketball together on a city-wide scale and created accessible playing opportunities for thousands of children and youth.

Since its creation, more than 30,000 players have suited up in the WMBA, supported by more than 5,000 coaches and referees who have contributed to the league and, in many cases, begun their own long-term involvement in basketball through the organization.

The WMBA also helped extend the game into younger age groups, neighbourhood clubs and outdoor court development, including the first WMBA outdoor court in Garden City in 2006.

More than simply growing a league, the WMBA helped grow basketball throughout the community.

FIFTY MOMENTS — FIFTY YEARS

The Top 50 project began with public nominations and committee submissions before a selection group representing decades of Manitoba basketball experience met to review, discuss and rank the final choices.

Some moments represented a single championship or achievement. Others represented an era, organization or development whose influence grew over decades.

Together, the final 50 provide a snapshot of Manitoba basketball history — from grassroots participation and high school competition to university dynasties, professional basketball, Olympic and Paralympic achievement, officiating, coaching, inclusive sport, facilities and the many people who have helped build the game.

Basketball Manitoba thanks the selection committee, public contributors, historical archives, organizations and individuals who assisted with the project, along with Joey Slattery for producing and voicing the video series.

Basketball Manitoba Top 50 Countdown Reaches Final Ten with Impact Moments #20–11

Basketball Manitoba has reached the final stage before its Top 10 reveal, unveiling Impact Moments #20 through #11 as part of its ongoing 50th anniversary celebration.

The Top 50 Impact Moments in Manitoba Basketball History project recognizes the milestones that helped change, elevate and grow the game throughout the province.

The countdown, produced and voiced by Joey Slattery, now enters its Top 20.

#20 — Bison East Closes and IGAC Opens — 1998
The closing of the historic Bison East gym and the opening of the Investors Group Athletic Centre marked a major transition for basketball at the University of Manitoba. IGAC became the new home of Bisons basketball and an important legacy facility tied to the 1999 Pan American Games.

#19 — Wesmen Classic and Golden Boy Tournament Tradition — 1967 to Present
Building from the Golden Boy tournament tradition created by Vic Pruden, the Wesmen Classic became one of Canada's largest and longest-running basketball showcases, featuring university, high school, junior high and community competition.

#18 — Jerry Hemmings' Historic Coaching Career — Through 2014
Jerry Hemmings built Brandon University into a national powerhouse and retired in 2014 with 739 career wins. His championships, sustained national success and influence on generations of players and coaches created one of the most significant coaching legacies in Canadian basketball.

#17 — Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum — 1983 & 2001
The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame began with its first induction in 1983, and a permanent museum opened at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre in 2001. The museum remains Canada's only dedicated basketball museum and continues to preserve Manitoba's basketball history.

#16 — Formal Creation of Basketball Manitoba — 1976
Basketball Manitoba was formally incorporated in 1976 as the Manitoba Amateur Basketball Association, establishing the provincial governing body for the sport. That organization became the foundation for provincial teams, athlete development, coach and official education, events, leagues, 3x3 and province-wide basketball programming.

#15 — John Carson and Beth Cochran Become Five-Time All-Canadians — 1983–1987
Brandon University's John Carson earned five consecutive CIAU First Team All-Canadian selections, while University of Winnipeg standout Beth Cochran became a five-time All-Canadian. Their parallel achievements remain among the most remarkable examples of sustained individual excellence in Manitoba university basketball.

#14 — Opening of the Duckworth Centre — 1984
The University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre opened in 1984 and became Manitoba's first major multi-court basketball facility. It has since hosted university, high school, provincial, national and international basketball events and remains one of the province's most important basketball venues.

#13 — Sandra Carroll Wins Three Straight Nan Copp Trophies — 1993–1995
University of Winnipeg star Sandra Carroll was named Canada's women's university basketball Player of the Year three consecutive times, one of the most extraordinary individual achievements in Canadian university basketball.

#12 — Winnipeg Invitational Tournament Tradition — 1976 to Present
The Winnipeg Invitational Tournament has served as one of Manitoba's premier high school basketball showcases for generations, helping build the province's high-level tournament culture and providing a major stage for many of Manitoba's top student-athletes.

#11 — Joey Johnson Wins Three Paralympic Gold Medals — 2000, 2004 & 2012
Manitoba's Joey Johnson captured Paralympic wheelchair basketball gold medals with Canada in 2000, 2004 and 2012. His international career made him one of Manitoba's most decorated basketball athletes and helped elevate wheelchair basketball within the province.

With 40 moments now revealed, only ten remain.

Basketball Manitoba Top 50 Countdown Reaches the Top 30 with Impact Moments #30–21

With 20 moments already revealed, the countdown now reaches its Top 30.

#30 — MCAC Relaunch and Growth — 2008–09 to Present
The Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference was relaunched in 2008–09, expanding organized post-secondary basketball opportunities in Manitoba. Building from earlier collegiate structures such as CPAC, the MCAC helped raise the profile of smaller post-secondary basketball programs. Beginning in 2027, MCAC basketball programs will also be eligible to advance to CCAA national championships.

#29 — Ken Opalko Sets Canadian University Scoring Record — 1981
University of Winnipeg standout Ken Opalko finished his career with 3,603 points and became the Canadian university men's all-time scoring leader. He passed Mickey Fox of St. Mary's in his final game, and did so before the introduction of the three-point line.

#28 — MHSAA Four-Classification Championship System — 1991
The introduction of the A, AA, AAA and AAAA high school classification system reshaped Manitoba provincial championships. It created more balanced competition and allowed schools of different sizes clearer pathways to provincial success.

#27 — Philippine Basketball Association of Manitoba — 2001 to Present
The Philippine Basketball Association of Manitoba began with seven teams in 2001 and grew into one of the province's largest basketball communities, with hundreds of teams participating over time. Its growth strengthened both youth and adult participation and established Filipino basketball as a major part of Manitoba's basketball culture.

#26 — Winnipeg Selects and Modern Club Basketball Growth — 1999 to Present
The Winnipeg Selects helped establish Manitoba's modern club basketball era. Club basketball expanded year-round development, travel competition and athlete training opportunities beyond traditional school and community seasons and continues to evolve into today's broader club and prep basketball landscape.

#25 — COVID-19 Shutdown and Return to Play — 2020–21
The COVID-19 pandemic abruptly halted organized basketball across Manitoba, affecting leagues, school seasons, clubs, camps, practices and events. The eventual return required organizations to rebuild participation, adapt operations and restore confidence in organized sport.

#24 — Winnipeg Hosts Basketball at the Pan American Games — 1999
The 1999 Pan American Games brought elite international basketball to Winnipeg and placed Manitoba on a major global sport stage. The event featured high-level national teams and future professional players and also left an important facility legacy through venues such as the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

#23 — Winnipeg Thunder and Cyclone Professional Era — 1992–2001
The Winnipeg Thunder and later the Winnipeg Cyclone brought professional basketball to Winnipeg through the 1990s and early 2000s. The Thunder's debut drew more than 11,000 fans to Winnipeg Arena and demonstrated the city's appetite for professional basketball.

#22 — Manitoba Senior Men's National Championship Era — 1972–1982
The St. Andrews Super Saints and Nicollet Inn combined to win six Canadian Senior Men's national championships over a ten-year period, establishing Manitoba as a national senior basketball power.

#21 — Manitoba Adopts FIBA Playing Rules — 2007–08
Manitoba's transition to FIBA rules brought the provincial game closer to international standards. Changes including longer high school quarters, a 24-second shot clock, wider key and extended three-point line reshaped the pace, spacing, strategy and development of the game.

The next release moves the countdown into the Top 20, with moments #20 through #11.

Basketball Manitoba Top 50 Impact Moments Countdown Continues with Moments #40–31

This second installment moves the countdown from #40 to #31.

#40 — Canadian Universities Adopt Athletic Scholarships — 1981
The acceptance of athletic scholarships in Canadian university sport changed recruiting, roster building and competition across the country. For Manitoba programs, the shift influenced how universities attracted and retained athletes and helped reshape the competitive landscape of Canadian post-secondary basketball.

#39 — Team Manitoba Wins North American Indigenous Games Gold — 2014 & 2023
Team Manitoba captured the 14U boys basketball gold medal at the 2014 North American Indigenous Games and later added a 19U female gold medal in 2023. Both achievements highlighted Indigenous athlete development in Manitoba and demonstrated how Indigenous sport pathways can create meaningful high-performance opportunities.

#38 — Formation and Growth of the Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials — Late 1970s to Present
The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials grew from a smaller group into a province-wide organization responsible for officiating education, development and governance. Over the decades, MABO has helped thousands of Manitobans pick up the whistle and has supported the modernization of officiating, including the transition to three-person crews.

#37 — Gordon Bell Boys' Historic Championship Season — 1980–81
Gordon Bell captured the AAAA provincial championship in a landmark season remembered not only for its success on the court, but also for the significance of the first all-Black starting lineup. The players' later advancement into university basketball added to the lasting impact of that championship team.

#36 — Basketball Manitoba Specialty Licence Plate — 2017
Basketball Manitoba's specialty licence plate gave the game a visible presence on roads throughout the province while also raising money for grassroots programming. More than 4,500 plates have been issued, generating over $150,000 in support of basketball initiatives.

#35 — Growth of 3x3 Basketball from Winnipeg Stadium — 1992 to Present
Winnipeg Stadium hosted one of Canada's early large-scale 3x3 streetball events in 1992, long before 3x3 became an Olympic discipline. That early momentum continued through Hoop It Up, NBA 3 on 3 and eventually Basketball Manitoba's high school 3x3 provincial championships beginning in 2023.

#34 — Fort Garry Invitational and Pembina Trails Tournament Tradition — 1960 to Present
One of Manitoba's longest-running high school basketball events, the Fort Garry Invitational and later Pembina Trails tournament tradition provided generations of student-athletes with an important early-season showcase and helped strengthen the province's high school tournament culture.

#33 — Major Basketball Facility Expansion — 2014, 2016 & 2018
The opening of Brandon University's Healthy Living Centre in 2014, the Sport Manitoba Courts in 2016 and Dakota Fieldhouse in 2018 significantly expanded Manitoba's modern basketball infrastructure. Together, these facilities increased training, league, camp and major-event capacity across the province.

#32 — Team Manitoba Wins Junior Women's National Championship — 1991
Team Manitoba captured the Canadian Junior Women's National Championship in Winnipeg in 1991. The gold medal remains one of the province's most important provincial team achievements and a landmark moment in the development of women's basketball in Manitoba.

#31 — Manitoba Hosts National Championships and Canada Games — 1997, 2010, 2011, 2016 & 2017
Manitoba has repeatedly welcomed major national basketball events, including Canada Games basketball in Brandon in 1997, Canada Basketball age-group national championships in 2010, 2011 and 2016, and Canada Summer Games basketball in Winnipeg in 2017. These events helped strengthen Manitoba's reputation as a national basketball hosting centre.

The countdown continues Wednesday with Impact Moments #30 through #21, followed by #20 through #11 on Thursday and the final Top 10 at the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner on Saturday night.

#50 — Manitoba National University Players of the Year — 1976–77 to 2021–22
Across more than four decades, Manitoba-connected athletes have repeatedly reached the highest level of individual recognition in Canadian university basketball. Mike Moser Trophy recipients include Martin Riley, John Carson, two-time winner Patrick Jebbison, Jeff Foreman and Keith Vassell. Nan Copp Award recipients include Kim Bertholet, three-time winner Sandra Carroll, Anne Smith, JoAnne Wells (Small), Keneca Pingue-Giles and Keylyn Filewich.

#49 — Launch of the Basketball Manitoba Super Coaches Clinic — 2009
Launched in 2009, the Super Coaches Clinic grew into one of Basketball Manitoba’s signature coach-development initiatives. More than 5,000 coaches have attended over the years, connecting grassroots, school, club and high-performance coaches with leading presenters, new ideas and practical learning opportunities.

#48 — Mike Spack’s Triple-Category Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame Recognition — 2009
Mike Spack became the first person recognized by the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in three different categories — as a player, a builder and a member of an inducted team. The distinction reflects the exceptional breadth of his contribution to Manitoba basketball.

#47 — Graham Bodnar Represents Canada at the Deaflympics — 2025
Manitoba athlete Graham Bodnar represented Canada in Deaflympics basketball competition, providing another example of a Manitoba player reaching the international stage while highlighting the province’s connection to deaf and inclusive basketball pathways.

#46 — Launch of the Junior High Basketball Championships — 1996
Basketball Manitoba created the Junior High Basketball Championships to provide junior high and middle school teams with a true season-ending provincial championship opportunity. More than 15,000 players have participated in the championships over the years, making the event an important part of Manitoba’s younger basketball development pathway.

#45 — Manitoba Wheelchair Basketball Championship Era — 2001–03 and 2025
A Manitoba wheelchair basketball team captured three consecutive Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League championships from 2001 through 2003. More than two decades later, the integration of wheelchair basketball under Basketball Manitoba in 2025 marked another significant step toward a more unified and inclusive provincial basketball structure.

#44 — Brandon High School Basketball Jamboree — March 1993
For the first and only time, one Manitoba community hosted every MHSAA boys’ and girls’ provincial basketball championship across the A, AA, AAA and AAAA classifications. The Brandon Basketball Jamboree brought the province’s high school championship basketball together for a unique celebration of the game.

#43 — University of Winnipeg Hosts the Women’s National Championship
The University of Winnipeg has played an important role in bringing Canada’s national university women’s basketball championship to Manitoba, providing local fans with an opportunity to see the country’s elite programs compete on a national championship stage and demonstrating Winnipeg’s capacity to host major basketball events.

#42 — Team Manitoba Wins its First Senior Women’s National Championship — 1986
Team Manitoba captured its first Canadian Senior Women’s National Championship in 1986. The gold medal was a breakthrough achievement for women’s basketball in the province and demonstrated Manitoba’s ability to compete successfully at the highest national senior level.

#41 — NBA Exhibition Games Come to Winnipeg — Multiple Years
Winnipeg has hosted a number of NBA preseason exhibition games over the decades at both the former Winnipeg Arena and today’s Canada Life Centre. Teams appearing in the city have included the Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons and Vancouver Grizzlies, among others. Winnipeg also hosted the first-ever meeting between the expansion Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies at Winnipeg Arena in the fall of 1995. Bringing NBA basketball to Manitoba provided local fans with rare opportunities to experience the world’s top professional league in person.

FIVE CHAPTERS TELLING 50 YEARS OF MANITOBA BASKETBALL

Rather than release the entire list at once, Basketball Manitoba is presenting the Top 50 as a five-part countdown, giving each group of selections and the stories behind them its own spotlight.

The video series is being produced and voiced by Joey Slattery, combining the countdown narration with historical photographs, video, logos, archival material and other imagery connected to the selected moments.

Following today’s release of #50–41, the countdown will continue throughout next week on Basketball Manitoba’s website, YouTube and social media platforms:

Wednesday, September 23 — #30 through #21

The final ten will receive a special unveiling on the evening of Saturday, September 26, 2026, as part of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Dinner at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.

The Top 10 presentation will bring the countdown to its conclusion and reveal the committee’s selection as the #1 Impact Moment in Manitoba Basketball History over the past 50 years.

CELEBRATING MORE THAN JUST THE FINAL RANKINGS

While the project ultimately produces a ranked list of 50, its larger purpose is to preserve and share the stories behind Manitoba basketball.

The selection process showed how difficult it can be to narrow 50 years of history to just 50 moments. Committee submissions covered national championships, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, professional basketball, university dynasties, community organizations, high school milestones, coaching and officiating, facilities, rule changes, Indigenous basketball, wheelchair basketball, deaf basketball, tournaments, governance and many of the builders whose work created opportunities for others.

Some selections represent a single game or achievement. Others recognize a dynasty, an era or an initiative whose impact developed over many years.

Together, the 50 selections tell a much larger story: how basketball in Manitoba has evolved, who helped move it forward and how one generation created opportunities for the next.

The countdown continues Tuesday with the unveiling of Impact Moments #40 through #31.
