Basketball Manitoba is proud to formally announce the final rosters for the 2026 Manitoba Provincial Teams. These six teams – 14U Female, 14U Male, 15U Female, 15U Male, 17U Female and 17U Male will go on to train and represent the province this summer at various events, with the 15U and 17U teams at the Canada Basketball National Championships in Saskatchewan (male) and Quebec (female).

Basketball Manitoba recently hosted its annual 'Team Toba Day', which included a full day of physical testing, data collection, gear distribution, official photographs and program overviews.

RRC Polytech Rebels Set to Host Men’s and Women’s Basketball ID Camps for Prospective Student-Athletes

Aspiring collegiate basketball players will have two opportunities this July to showcase their skills as the RRC Polytech Rebels host Men’s and Women’s Basketball ID Camps for students interested in joining the Rebels varsity basketball program.

The camps are designed for current and prospective full-time RRC Polytech students who are looking to continue their basketball careers at the post-secondary level. Participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, meet the Rebels coaching staff, and learn more about the varsity basketball program and student-athlete experience at RRC Polytech.

The Men’s Basketball ID Camp will take place:

The Women’s Basketball ID Camp begins:

Both camps are open to individuals who are starting or returning as full-time RRC Polytech students, providing a pathway to compete for a roster position with the Rebels varsity basketball program during the upcoming season.

The ID Camps will allow athletes to showcase their basketball skills in a competitive environment while learning more about the expectations of collegiate athletics and the opportunities available through RRC Polytech.

DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS TUESDAY JULY 14!

Zueike has announced the Campus Summer Classic 3x3, a two-day outdoor basketball tournament set for Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18, 2026, at The Campus @ Zueike, located at 65 Trottier Bay in Winnipeg.

The Campus Summer Classic 3x3 will bring together teams from across the city for a weekend of fast-paced FIBA-style basketball, music, crowd energy, food and drinks, and a premium outdoor summer basketball experience.

Designed as more than just a tournament, the event will combine competition, community, and culture in a setting that reflects the energy of summer basketball in Winnipeg. From youth athletes building confidence to open division teams competing in the sun, the event is designed to create a social, competitive, and community-focused atmosphere that feels uniquely Zueike.

Tournament divisions will include:

Youth Division: Grades 6-8
High School Division: Grades 9-12
Open Recreational Division
Open Men’s Division

The tournament will run Friday, July 17, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Saturday, July 18, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Teams will compete under FIBA 3x3 rules, including 10-minute games, a 12-second shot clock, no break after scoring, no halftime, no quarters, and games ending at 21 points. Each team will consist of four players, with three players on the court and one substitute. All teams will receive a four-game guarantee.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first-place team in each division.

The Campus Summer Classic 3x3 is designed for athletes, families, fans, and community members looking to experience one of Winnipeg’s most energetic basketball weekends of the summer. Whether competing, supporting a team, or enjoying the atmosphere, the event will bring people together through the game in a setting rooted in competition, culture, and community connection.

LAST CALL: Nothin’ But Nets Campaign Back for 2026; Now Offering Free Rims

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the return of an initiative to give away up to 100 FREE basketball nets to be installed on public courts across Manitoba! The "Nothin' But Nets" campaign aims to get every outdoor public basketball court outfitted with a new mesh this summer. Since launching this campaign in 2021, Basketball Manitoba has distributed over 525 free nets for public courts to the Manitoba basketball community.

NEW FOR 2026, Basketball Manitoba also has a limited number of new basketball rims available to the community to replace aging or damaged ones in public spaces. Due to their size and weight, the rims will need to be picked up from the Sport Manitoba building in Winnipeg once they have been arranged for. As rims require more work to install a net, these available rims must be installed by or with the permission of the facility owner or manager. More details are in the request form.

Basketball Manitoba is grateful to Linking Hope for the donation of the new rims for this initiative!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

This campaign is connected to the Manitoba Basketball Outdoor Court Map project, in which only outdoor courts listed on the map are eligible for a free net or rim. The map feature currently includes detailed court specs for over 335 outdoor public courts (with over 840 individual hoops) in Manitoba. If your area's outdoor public court still needs to be added to the map, SUBMIT your specs to us first, then request your free nets or rim.

Basketball Manitoba will provide up to 2 high-quality basketball nets and one rim per court to the first 100 net requests we receive this summer. Those eligible under the terms of the campaign will receive the nets by mail shortly after submitting an online request and will then be responsible for mounting the items in their community. Proof that the nets or rim have been mounted, including a before-and-after photo, will be required for the individual to remain eligible to receive future nets or rims from Basketball Manitoba.

REMINDER: Home Court Coaches Clinic Set for Sat Sep 19 at Dakota Collegiate

Basketball Manitoba has announced that registration is now open for the 2026 Home Court Coaching Clinic, hosted by Dean Favoni and Eric Sung.

The clinic will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Dakota Collegiate, located at 661 Dakota Street in Winnipeg. The professional development event is open to a maximum of 50 coaches and is designed to provide an interactive coaching experience for Manitoba’s basketball community.

The 2026 clinic will feature four experienced presenters from across the Manitoba basketball system:

Kirby Schepp - University of Manitoba / Egypt National Team / Canada Basketball
Nick Lother - Evolve Basketball / Central Canada Prep
Elijah Lostracco - University of Manitoba / Team Manitoba U17
Alyssa Cox - University of Winnipeg

The Home Court Coaching Clinic provides coaches with an opportunity to learn directly from experienced leaders working in university, provincial team, national team, school, club, and athlete development environments. The format is intended to support practical learning, coach interaction, and shared ideas that can be taken back into team and program settings.

The clinic fee is $50 per coach, with capacity limited to 50 participants.

Sport Manitoba Performance Launches Game Speed Training Camp for Summer 2026

Sport Manitoba Performance is offering a new Game Speed Training Camp this summer, designed to help individual and team sport athletes improve the speed, agility, power and conditioning needed to perform in game-like situations.

The six-week program will run from July 20 to August 27, 2026, with sessions offered three times per week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The camp is open to athletes ages 12 to 19 and is geared toward participants in sports where quickness, acceleration, change of direction and explosive power are key, including basketball, soccer, football, hockey, volleyball, lacrosse and other team sports.

The program will focus on developing athletic qualities that transfer directly to competition, helping athletes build their ability to move faster, react sharper and perform with more power in sport-specific situations.

Two training groups will be offered:

Group 1

Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30–6:00 p.m.
For athletes ages 12–15

Group 2

Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00–7:30 p.m.
For athletes ages 16–19

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the High-Performance Camp from Monday, August 24 to Thursday, August 27, 2026, for boys and girls ages 9 to 15!

Head coaches Randy Kusano, Victor Lee, and Katrina Rogan, along with guest coaches, will lead the girls' camp on court 3. The boys' camp sessions will be led by head coaches Dan Becker and Keenan Benarroch, along with guest coaches, on courts 1 and 2.

The cost of the camp is $140.00 per player, which includes the camp, insurance and a Basketball Manitoba t-shirt.

The registration deadline is FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2026, at 12:00 pm or when the camp sells out. The camps sell out each year, so register now to avoid disappointment.

LEAD COACH BIOS:

Randy Kusano was the winningest coach in the history of high school basketball in Manitoba. His high school teams won three MHSAA (Manitoba High School Athletic Association) AAAA Provincial Championships provincial titles and 11 conference titles, and he coached in 15 AAAA Final Fours in his 34 years coaching with the Oak Park Raiders in Winnipeg before retiring from teaching in 2010. A University of Manitoba graduate, Kusano is a current fully certified NCCP Level 3 coach with nearly 25 years of CIS coaching experience as an assistant with the Bison men’s and women's basketball program.

Randy has been involved in basketball as a player and coach for over forty years. He developed his love for basketball at Norberry Junior High in St. Vital, playing for Hall of Famer Dennis Alvestad. He moved on to Glenlawn Collegiate and finally to the University of Manitoba. Randy was a member of three consecutive Canadian Junior Men’s championship teams from 1971-1973. In 1976 he was a member of the first Manitoba team to win a National University championship in basketball, the University of Manitoba Bisons.

After his university years were done, he continued playing with the Nicolett Inn Senior men’s team that captured their first National Senior Men’s Championship in 1979. The University of Manitoba Junior Men and Nicolett Inn Senior men’s teams were later inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame.

Randy’s coaching career began with the University of Manitoba Junior Bisons in 1974 and continued there until 1976. He has coached high school basketball for the past thirty-four years, thirty-two as head coach of the Varsity Boys program at Oak Park High School.

Over his 34 years at Oak Park, Randy developed the dominant high school program of its era, going to 15 Final Fours and winning 3 AAAA Provincial Championships. During this time, he has helped to develop more than twenty-five players who have gone on to play at the Canadian College or CIS level. Randy has also served as an assistant coach at the University of Manitoba for fifteen years.

Randy has also coached numerous Manitoba Provincial teams as head coach and as an assistant coach at the Canada Games, Western Canada Games, and National Championships.

Victor Lee is an emerging coach within Manitoba's basketball system with experience across school, club, and provincial development environments. A graduate of Oak Park High School, Lee returned to the program as an assistant coach before assuming head coaching duties for the varsity boys team ahead of the 2024–2025 season.

At the club level, Lee serves as the head coach of Evolve Basketball's U18 female program, following a season as an assistant coach. Under his leadership, the program has achieved significant competitive success. His coaching approach emphasizes team culture, accountability, and long-term athlete development, with a strong focus on creating positive learning environments. Lee is currently completing his Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba and remains actively engaged in basketball development through coaching, volunteer involvement, and service within Basketball Manitoba.

Katrina Rogan is an experienced coach with a strong background across school, club, and provincial development environments. She currently serves as the Head Coach of the Vincent Massey Collegiate Junior Varsity Girls program, where she focuses on building confident, skilled athletes within a positive and competitive team culture. In addition, Rogan is an assistant coach with the Junior Bisons Prairie Elite Basketball League program and is actively involved with the Canada Basketball Junior Academy in Winnipeg

At the club level, Rogan is the head coach of the Evolve Basketball U15 girls program, working closely with athletes on skill development, basketball IQ, and long-term progression. A former Manitoba Provincial Team athlete, she competed at both the 15U and 17U levels before continuing her playing career with the University of Winnipeg. Rogan brings a player-centred approach shaped by recent high-level playing experience, emphasizing development, confidence, and a strong connection to the game.

Dan Becker has been an active player and coach for over 30 years at all levels of the game. His playing history began as a standout player at Fort Richmond Collegiate, which led him to play NCAA Division 1 basketball at the University of Colorado. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Degree, Dan continued his basketball career, playing 12 years for a variety of teams and leagues all over the globe, including stints with the Winnipeg Thunder and the Winnipeg Cyclone. In the summer of 1991, Dan was invited to try out for the Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers of the NBA. Dan's playing career also saw him represent Team Canada in the late 80s and early 90s on various Student and Training National Teams, including the World Universiade Games in Germany and 2 Jones Cups in Taipei, Taiwan.

As a coach, Dan has worked with players at many different levels. Dan completed his NCCP Level 4 education at the National Coaching Institute in Winnipeg. He assisted at the CIS men's level from 2000 to 2004 and took the interim head coaching duties in 2004-05 with the University of Manitoba Men's Program. Over this same time period, Dan coached a number of Basketball Manitoba's Provincial Teams at the 15U and 17U levels, winning a bronze medal at the 2004 17U. In 2014, Dan led the Manitoba 17U Male Provincial team to their first-ever Gold Medal at the National Championship. Dan was an active coach in the Canada Basketball Centre for Performance Program and an instructor at the Nike All-Canada Camp. Dan has also served as the Basketball Technical Advisor for three feature films; ESPN's 'A Season on the Brink' in 2001, 'Full of It' in 2005, and “Champions” in 2023.

From 2005 to 2010, Dan worked with Randy Kusano and the Oak Park Raiders Varsity male' Program, winning two Provincial Championships and making five consecutive Final Four appearances. Dan coached the University of Winnipeg Collegiate Varsity male team during the 2010-11 season. Dan has also coached grassroots programs in the school system, RSL, WMBA, and Peg City leagues.

Dan is the Head Coach for many of the Basketball Manitoba High-Performance programs and is also a Learning Facilitator and Coach Evaluator in the new NCCP coaching education program.

In 2013, Dan was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in the Player category in recognition of his tremendous playing career. Dan currently resides in Winnipeg, is married and has 3 children.

Keenan Benarroch has been involved in basketball for nearly a decade, both as a player and a coach. He played for the University of Manitoba Bisons from 2014 to 2017.

Following his playing career, Keenan served as an assistant coach for the University of Manitoba Men’s Basketball team during the 2017–2018 season. During this time, he also worked as a program coordinator for the Junior Bisons. He later joined the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Women’s Basketball team as an Assistant Coach, a role he held from 2019 to 2023. In the 2021–2022 season, Keenan played a key role in helping the team achieve a perfect 20–0 record, capturing both the OUA and U SPORTS National Championships.

Keenan has been deeply involved in provincial and grassroots basketball. In 2021, he served as the Head Coach for the Downtown Toronto Centre for Performance and as an Apprentice Coach with the Ontario 15U Provincial Girls team. He has also worked extensively in athlete development as a Head Coach of a 14U boys team and as a coach within the Junior Academy program in Winnipeg.

In 2020, Keenan worked as a Video and Performance Analyst for Canada Basketball’s 3x3 Men’s National Team during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, where he analyzed game footage and provided performance insights to support team success.

Currently, Keenan is pursuing a Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba while coaching the JV boys team at Fort Richmond Collegiate and assisting with the University of Manitoba Bisons program.

Summit Basketball Launches Two Summer Camp Options for Male Athletes

Summit Basketball has announced two summer basketball camp opportunities for male athletes looking to build their skills, confidence and overall understanding of the game this July at St. Emile School.

The Summit Basketball Skill Builder Camp is designed for male athletes born from 2013 to 2015 and will focus on skill development, confidence-building and competitive play in a positive, high-energy environment. The camp will run over six sessions on July 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28 at St. Emile School, located at 552 St. Anne’s Road in Winnipeg.

Sessions for the Skill Builder Camp will take place on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. and Sundays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $100 for all six sessions.

Summit Basketball is also offering a Basketball IQ Camp for boys born between 2010 and 2012. This camp is focused on helping athletes improve their basketball IQ, decision-making and overall game understanding. The six-session camp will also be held at the St. Emile School Gym for a cost of $100.

The Basketball IQ Camp will run on the same dates — July 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28 — with sessions scheduled for Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and Sundays from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

Hall of Fame News: New Basketball Memorabilia Donations Received from Canadian Ukrainian Athletic Club Blues and Winnipeg Dominos

The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum was very happy to welcome Tracy LaPointe recently on her visit to Winnipeg from her home in Ontario. Tracy’s mother, Pat Roberts, was one of the true pioneers in women’s basketball in Manitoba. She played for the CUAC (Canadian Ukrainian Athletic Club) Blues and the Winnipeg Dominos in the 1940s and 1950s. As a part of her time in Winnipeg, Tracy donated some outstanding pictures, a scrapbook, CUAC Yearbooks, and crests, all from her mother’s career.

The items have become an important addition to our archival collection and soon will be available on Musetoba, our online database, through the public portal. The Hall of Fame and Museum welcomes donations of all basketball-related materials and is a very appropriate place for these items to be preserved and displayed.

REMINDER TO ALL COACHES: Complete Your Respect in Sport Online Certification Today

RE-CERTIFY NOW: Sport Manitoba Coaching is reminding all Manitoba-based basketball coaches that they must complete the Respect in Sport (RiS) recertification. All coaches at any level in Manitoba are required to recertify every 5 years. Manitoba was the first province to make the RiS program mandatory, and we are equally proud to be the first to make recertification mandatory. Basketball Manitoba is pleased to partner with Sport Manitoba and embrace the Respect in Sport program to help ensure a safe and positive sports environment for all participants. There is no cost for Manitoba coaches to complete this program.

If you completed the course more than 5 years ago, to maintain your status as an active basketball coach in Manitoba, you will need to complete the new online system now. The online course has been dramatically revamped and updated since its initial launch in 2007. It touches on contemporary topics that coaches may experience in today's game, including social media, cyber-bullying, hazing, gender identification and more. The course takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to complete and can be completed in 20 to 30-minute pieces.

IMPORTANT: If you have completed the course previously and are looking to recertify, please use your login information from when you initially completed the course. There are options at the login screen you can follow to recover your login information if needed.

CAMPAIGN ENDS SUNDAY: Basketball Manitoba Launches 2026 Provincial Team Fundraiser Through Vertical Raise

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the launch of the 2026 Manitoba Provincial Team Basketball Program Fundraiser, supporting athletes selected to represent the province through the Manitoba Provincial Team program.

The fundraising campaign has a goal of $15,000, with proceeds directly supporting the participants' key program costs, including training, travel, equipment and other athlete development needs. Donors can direct their support to a specific member of the Manitoba Provincial Team.

Fundraising plays an important role in keeping provincial team basketball accessible and sustainable for athletes and families. Each participant will have an individual fundraising goal and will be able to share their campaign through email, text, and social media.

Basketball Manitoba is partnering with Vertical Raise, an online fundraising platform designed to help teams and organizations raise funds efficiently while reducing the time and energy traditionally required to manage campaigns. The platform provides participants with easy online sign-up, personalized campaign pages, donation tracking, and support from experienced fundraising coaches.

Supporters will have several ways to contribute, including direct donations, the Vertical Discounts App, and other options. The Vertical Discounts App includes access to Entertainment Book offers across North America, featuring more than 1,000,000 discounts.

Business owners and companies are also invited to support the campaign through corporate sponsorship opportunities. Sponsors can receive prominent recognition on the fundraising page, creating a strong opportunity to support Manitoba athletes while gaining visibility with families, supporters, and the broader basketball community.

“By using the Vertical Raise fundraising platform last year, the Manitoba Provincial Team was able to exceed our goal and raise over $20,000 directly toward participant registration fees with very little effort,” said Adam Wedlake, Executive Director of Basketball Manitoba. “The process is straightforward, and the support provided made it easy to focus on promoting the initiative rather than worrying about logistics. What impressed us most was how much could be accomplished in such a short amount of time.”

REMINDER: Basketball Manitoba and Canada Basketball Seeking Manitoba Hosts for Fall 2026 Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Grassroots Basketball Programs

Basketball Manitoba has announced that it is working with Canada Basketball to connect with Manitoba clubs, schools, camps, leagues, and community organizations interested in hosting Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA programming for the Fall 2026 season.

The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA program is designed to support organizations in delivering structured, developmentally appropriate grassroots basketball programming for youth. The program can be added to an existing basketball system or used as the foundation to create a new local program.

Organizations across Manitoba are encouraged to consider the opportunity, including community clubs, school programs, camps, clinics, house leagues, skill development programs, and other local basketball initiatives.

Program support includes ready-to-use curriculum and session plans, official Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA branded apparel and equipment, coach education resources, marketing and promotional support, and operational guidance from Canada Basketball.

For Fall 2026, the program will include an updated curriculum with new games, lessons, and refreshed life-skills content, along with flexible jersey options at multiple price points to help meet the needs of different programs and budgets.

The program can support a wide range of delivery models, including house league programming, skill development programs, school-based programming, community basketball initiatives, camps, and clinics.

Interested Manitoba organizations are encouraged to begin conversations early, as onboarding, compliance, registration setup, and materials ordering timelines are all part of the planning process for the Fall 2026 season.

Manitoba Edges Sask 10-8 in Head-to-Head Games at 10th Annual Prairie Cup Challenge

Basketball Manitoba hosted the 10th annual Prairie Cup Challenge on June 27–28, 2026, at the Sport Manitoba Courts in Winnipeg, marking the first time in the event’s history that the series was held in Manitoba’s capital city.

The two-day event featured 22 games involving Manitoba and Saskatchewan provincial teams at the 14U, 15U and 17U levels, along with several additional exhibition matchups against non-provincial opponents. The Prairie Cup Challenge served as an important preparation event for athletes and coaches ahead of the Canada Basketball National Championships and Canada Games later this summer.

In the overall Manitoba vs. Saskatchewan head-to-head count, Manitoba finished on top with a 10-8 record. Games involving non-Manitoba or non-Saskatchewan opponents were excluded from the overall Prairie Cup Challenge total.

On the male side, Manitoba posted a 6-4 head-to-head record against Saskatchewan. The 17U Manitoba Male Provincial Team led the way with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating 17U Saskatchewan 84-70 and 99-77, while also earning a dominant 125-45 win over 16U Saskatchewan. The 14U Manitoba Male Provincial Team finished 2-1, defeating 14U Saskatchewan 99-59 and 108-61, with its lone loss coming 81-68 against 15U Saskatchewan. The 15U Manitoba Male Provincial Team went 1-3, falling 77-74 and 84-70 to 15U Saskatchewan and 72-67 to 16U Saskatchewan, while earning a convincing 113-42 win over 14U Saskatchewan.

On the female side, Manitoba and Saskatchewan split the head-to-head competition evenly at 4-4. The 15U Manitoba Female Provincial Team finished 2-1, opening with a 73-45 win over 15U Saskatchewan, adding a 72-24 cross-age win over 14U Saskatchewan, and then dropping a narrow 47-43 decision to 15U Saskatchewan on Sunday. The 14U Manitoba Female Provincial Team also posted a 2-1 record, defeating 14U Saskatchewan 52-46 and 42-39, while falling 56-34 to 15U Saskatchewan. The 17U Manitoba Female Provincial Team finished 0-3 overall, dropping games to 17U Saskatchewan 67-64 and 56-50, and also falling 78-68 in an exhibition matchup against STARS 2.

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA), in partnership with Elevate, has announced the return of the WMBA x ELEVATE 3x3 Youth Summer League for July and August 2026, bringing fast-paced outdoor basketball, elite skill development, and flexible summer programming opportunities to youth across Winnipeg.

Designed for players ages 8-17, the program combines the excitement of 3x3 basketball with high-level coaching from university and professional athletes, creating an engaging environment focused on player development, confidence, and fun.

The league will operate at multiple outdoor community court locations throughout Winnipeg, including Garden City, Corydon, Whyte Ridge, Dakota, Oxford Heights, and Kirkfield Westwood Community Centres.

The WMBA x ELEVATE 3x3 Summer League continues to grow as one of Winnipeg’s premier summer basketball development opportunities, offering athletes a chance to stay active, sharpen their skills, and compete in a flexible format that works for families during the busy summer months.

Players will benefit from the unique advantages of the internationally recognized 3x3 game format, which promotes more ball touches, faster decision-making, increased offensive opportunities, and greater player involvement throughout every game.

League organizers noted that the program emphasizes both development and accessibility, with no team practices required and flexible attendance options available for families managing vacations and summer schedules.

Manitoba Universities to Tip Off 2026-27 Canada West Basketball Season on Oct 23 as Schedules Released

The countdown to another exciting season of Canada West basketball is officially underway, as the 2026-27 conference schedules have been released for both men and women. Manitoba basketball fans can once again look forward to another year of outstanding university basketball featuring the province’s three U SPORTS programs — the Brandon Bobcats, Manitoba Bisons and Winnipeg Wesmen.

The regular season will once again begin in late October and feature 20 conference games for each team before the Canada West playoffs commence in February. The schedule includes several highly anticipated provincial rivalries that have become staples of the Canada West calendar.

Brandon Bobcats Looking to Build Momentum

The Brandon Bobcats will open the 2026-27 season on home court when they welcome the Winnipeg Wesmen to the Healthy Living Centre on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24. The opening weekend promises an exciting provincial showdown as both the men’s and women’s teams begin their conference campaigns in front of the Brandon faithful.

Following their opening series, the Bobcats will face another challenging stretch against the Manitoba Bisons before continuing through the highly competitive Canada West schedule. The conference slate features home-and-home series against all Prairie Division opponents, with key matchups throughout the season as Brandon looks to climb the standings and secure a playoff berth.

Manitoba Bisons Eye Another Strong Campaign

The Manitoba Bisons will begin their conference season on the road against the Saskatchewan Huskies before returning to Winnipeg for their home opener at Investors Group Athletic Centre. The Herd will once again be led by experienced coaching staffs and talented returning student-athletes on both the men’s and women’s sides as they pursue another Canada West playoff appearance.

Among the marquee weekends on the Bisons’ schedule are their annual matchups against provincial rivals Brandon and Winnipeg, contests that consistently draw outstanding crowds and showcase some of the best university basketball in Western Canada.

Wesmen Open with Provincial Rivalries

The Winnipeg Wesmen will face a challenging opening month, beginning with a road trip to Brandon before hosting the Manitoba Bisons in their home opener at the Duckworth Centre. The early-season schedule ensures basketball fans will immediately be treated to Manitoba rivalries as conference play gets underway.

The Wesmen men’s program enters the season looking to build on another competitive campaign, while the women’s team continues to strengthen as both squads seek playoff success in Canada’s premier university basketball conference.

With three Canada West institutions located within the province, Manitoba continues to offer student-athletes exceptional opportunities to compete at the highest level of Canadian university basketball while remaining close to home.

THIS WEEKEND: 2026 Prairie Cup Challenge Set for June 27-28 at Sport Manitoba Courts Featuring Manitoba and Sask Provincial Teams

Basketball Manitoba will host the 10th annual 'Prairie Cup Challenge' series of basketball games between the Manitoba and Saskatchewan 14U, 15U and 17U female provincial teams this coming weekend. The 22-game event is scheduled for this weekend (June 27-28) at the Sport Manitoba Courts in Winnipeg, featuring games between the province's top 14 to 17 year old players.

This will mark the first time in its history that the event will be hosted in Winnipeg. Traditionally, the event alternates between Regina and Brandon. This year, because the Brandon University gym is unavailable, the games will take place in Winnipeg. There is no admission fee for spectators. The games will not be livestreamed.

This event marks the 10th time Basketball Manitoba and Basketball Saskatchewan will send their best to play a series of exhibition games as a warm-up to the National Championships and Canada Games scheduled for later this summer.

Winnipeg's Niyah Becker Named to Team Ottawa for FIBA 3x3 Women's Series Stop in France

Winnipeg's Niyah Becker will once again represent Canada on the international stage after being selected to Team Ottawa for the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series stop in Poitiers, France, taking place June 26–27, 2026.

The tournament marks Becker's 3x3 Senior National Team debut, adding another milestone to what has been a remarkable year for one of Manitoba's top basketball exports. Earlier this year, Becker represented Canada at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament in Istanbul, Türkiye.

A graduate of Wake Forest University, Becker has quickly established herself as one of Canada's emerging international players. Following her collegiate career, she launched a professional career in Europe with stops in Slovenia, Spain, and Latvia, before signing with the Aisin Wings of the Women's Japan Basketball League earlier this year.

Canada Basketball commented that Niyah earned her opportunity after attending the Senior Women's National Team 3x3 training camp in May. Her transition from the traditional 5-on-5 game into the fast-paced 3x3 format reflects Canada's continued commitment to integrating high-level athletes into its growing international 3x3 program.

Canada opens its tournament earlier that day against Hungary at 12:25 p.m. ET, followed by Beijing at 2:15 p.m. ET. All games will be streamed live on CBC Gem and the FIBA 3x3 YouTube Channel.

JULY 7 CAMP NOW OPEN: Winnipeg Sea Bears Announce 2026 Summer Series Youth Basketball Camps for Ages 5-13 at Sport Manitoba

The Winnipeg Sea Bears have announced details for the 2026 Sea Bears Summer Series, a youth basketball camp experience led by Sea Bears Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault, alongside Sea Bears players and assistant coaches.

The camps will give young athletes the opportunity to learn from the pros they cheer for while developing basketball fundamentals, improving their skills, and building confidence in a positive and energetic environment.

The Sea Bears Summer Series is open to youth ages 5-13, with three age-specific sessions scheduled throughout the summer at Sport Manitoba, located at 145 Pacific Avenue in Winnipeg.

Each session will focus on age-appropriate skill development, fundamentals, teamwork, and confidence-building, with instruction provided by Sea Bears coaches and players.

Each registered camper will receive a free Sea Bears Summer Series T-shirt and one ticket voucher to a Sea Bears home game during the 2026 season. Ticket voucher redemption terms and conditions are available through the Winnipeg Sea Bears.

A registration fee of $5.25 will apply. The fee has been introduced to help reduce no-shows and ensure spaces are reserved for participants who intend to attend, allowing organizers to plan effectively and provide the best experience possible for all campers.

Huddle Brandon and WYBA’s 3rd Annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at Brandon University on Sun, Sep 13, 2026

Registration is now open for the 3rd Annual Huddle Brandon / WYBA 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, set for Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre, located at 2010 Louise Avenue in Brandon.

The annual community basketball event will bring teams together for a full day of 3x3 competition, skill contests and prizes, while supporting the continued community work of Huddle Brandon and the Westman Youth Basketball Association (WYBA). All proceeds from the tournament will support both organizations and their efforts to make a positive impact through sport, youth engagement and community programming.

The tournament will feature boys and girls divisions, with each team guaranteed four games. A shooting competition will be held for each division, with prizes awarded to team and individual winners.

Divisions include:

U17 – Born 2009 or younger
U15 – Born 2011 or younger
U13 – Born 2013 or younger

Girls Divisions

Impact Officiating Announces 2026 Basketball Officials Camp October 2-4 in Winnipeg

Impact Officiating has announced the return of its basketball officials camp, taking place October 2 to 4, 2026, in conjunction with the Peg City Showcase tournament in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

This year’s camp will feature both Two-Person Officiating (2PO) and Three-Person Officiating (3PO), providing development opportunities for officials at different stages of their officiating journey. The camp will again be led by Camp Director Rick DeGagne, a respected official, clinician and Referee Coach with a wealth of experience at the provincial, national, international and professional levels.

The camp is open to Level 1 through Level 4 officials seeking to upgrade their skill set as they progress through their plan of continuous improvement.

The 2PO portion of the camp is designed primarily for newer officials with approximately one to five years of experience, or those looking to strengthen their foundation. The focus will be on learning how to referee, how to receive and apply feedback, and how to build strong habits in key areas including 2PO coverage and positioning, communication through whistle and voice, Individual Officiating Techniques, game control and play-calling.

The 3PO portion of the camp is designed for more experienced officials with proficient 2PO knowledge who are developing their three-person officiating skill set. The focus will be on 3PO coverage and positioning; understanding Open Angle versus Closed Angle as it relates to decision-making and play-calling; game control; and Individual Officiating Techniques.

Officials registering for the 3PO portion should have a basic understanding of three-person mechanics, although limited experience is acceptable. All camp participants will take part in the same classroom sessions. Officials who are unsure whether to register for the 2PO or 3PO portion of the camp are encouraged to contact Rick DeGagne at rickdegagne09@gmail.com for guidance.

The 2026 camp fee is $390 per official and includes camp swag, a whistle, notebook, classroom instruction, and in-game and post-game feedback from a staff of Referee Coaches with a vast array of knowledge and experience. The goal is for each participant to officiate five to six games over the course of the weekend.

A social event will be held Saturday evening, October 3, to provide further networking and engagement among camp participants and staff.

The total number of camp participants will be determined by the number of accepted registrations for both the 2PO and 3PO portions of the camp, with the overall camp size expected to be in the low to mid-forties.

MEET THE CAMP STAFF

MIKE THOMSON

Mike Thomson brings 46 years of experience as a basketball official, including 41 years on the court and 21 years as a FIBA-licensed referee. He is currently the Supervisor of Officials for Canada West. During his officiating career, Mike worked 13 U SPORTS Men’s National Championship tournaments, including 9 championship finals.

Internationally, Mike officiated at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games and completed 15 additional international assignments. He has refereed on every continent where basketball is played, except Africa. Today, Mike serves as a Canadian National Referee Coach and a FIBA Level 2+ Referee Instructor. His recent assignments include the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, the 2019 and 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cups, and multiple FIBA Americas events. Mike is dedicated to developing the next generation of officials, with a focus on continuous improvement and mentorship.

JOHN McFARLAND

John is a retired FIBA referee and currently serves on the Canada West officiating panel. He has previously served as President of both the Alberta and British Columbia Basketball Officials Associations. Nationally, John recently served as National Educator for the Canadian Basketball Officials Commission and is also the assignor and evaluator for the PACWEST Conference. A certified FIBA Level 1 Instructor, John continues to serve as a National Referee Coach and is passionate about mentoring officials at all levels of the game.

NEIL DONNELLY

Neil is a Canadian basketball official with over 30 years of U SPORTS experience, having officiated at 13 National Championships, including four men’s finals. A FIBA-certified referee for 12 years, he has worked games across four continents. Notably, Neil was nominated to the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he officiated both the Women’s Gold Medal Game and the Men’s Semi-Final. He currently officiates in the Canada West Conference and the CEBL professional league. Neil also serves as a National Referee Coach and takes pride in supporting the development of officials at all levels.

MARTHA BRADBURY

Martha is a retired U SPORTS official, having officiated at that level for 23-years. Over the course of her career, she was assigned as an on-court official to nine National Championships, including 4 at the U SPORTS level. Martha is currently the MABO Provincial Supervisor, having spent 20+ years as part of the Provincial Executive. She was also an Executive Member of both CABO and CBOC. She has been a provincial clinician and evaluator in Manitoba for 16 years. She is a current National Referee Coach, having attended 10 tournaments in that capacity. Martha has a passion for working with officials and in helping them develop their game.

REID KENYON

Reid has over 30 years of officiating experience, including 11 years as a FIBA official. His international resume includes assignments at the World University Games, the Pan Am Games, and FIBA Americas Pro League play. He has officiated at numerous National Championships across all levels, with highlights including the U SPORTS Men’s National Championship finals in 2010, 2015, and 2020. Reid is currently part of the CEBL officiating roster and has served as a Referee Coach at camps across Western Canada. Locally, he has directed over 10 officiating camps in Manitoba, is the long-time assignor for the WMBA, and has served as President of the MABO Board. Recently appointed as a National Referee Coach, Reid is looking forward to contributing to the Impact Officiating Camp this October.

TIM WARREN

Tim brings 25 years of officiating experience, including 16 years as a Canada West panel official. He is currently the President of the Western Manitoba Basketball Officials Association and serves on the MABO Board. Over the past decade, Tim has actively supported the development of Manitoba officials through evaluations and clinics. He is especially committed to mentoring grassroots officials and supporting the broader basketball community. Professionally, Tim spent 15 years in supervisory and management roles with a focus on team building and conflict resolution. His insightful approach to officiating and player interactions adds value to every game he observes. Tim is excited to join the staff of the Impact Officiating Camp.

STACY HAWASH

Stacy is an active CanWest official with 21 years at the university level. She has officiated at multiple national championships, including the U15 and U17 summer competitions as well as three U SPORTS championships. Stacy is also a highly accomplished coach, having served in this role for the Manitoba U15 and U17 programs. Her teams at Vincent Massey (WPG) are consistently among the top teams in the MHSAA. As a provincial Referee Coach, Stacy has served as a clinician and evaluator for the past 10 years. She is also a certified NOCP Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Facilitator. As an educator, Stacy enjoys teaching basketball to officials and athletes at all levels.

EARL ROBERTS

Earl is an active Canada West official with 26 years of experience at the university level. He has worked numerous playoff series and has officiated at U SPORTS National Championships for both men’s and women’s competitions. Earl is also a member of the CEBL officiating staff and has served as a Referee Coach at several MHSAA Provincial Championships, including at the 4A level. Recently, he has expanded his leadership role in the officiating community by participating on committees responsible for assigning games in the MCAC and prep school circuits. Earl is also a member of the Pathway to Excellence committee. Known for his effective in-game communication with coaches and players—and his support for fellow officials off the court—Earl is looking forward to being part of the Impact Officiating Camp staff this October.

MATT DEGAGNE

Matt is an active Canada West official heading into his 14th year at the U SPORTS level. His most recent high-profile assignment was the 2025 CCAA Men's Tournament in Montreal. He has officiated in five Canada West Playoff Tournaments/Series. Matt's on-floor resume also includes three Summer National Tournaments at which he was assigned 1 Gold Medal and 1 Bronze Medal game. Matt is excited to become an Impact Officiating Camp instructor to help officials improve their skills.

WYATT ANDERS

Wyatt has been officiating for 22 years at various levels, including 10 years at the U SPORTS level. He is also part of the officiating staff in the CEBL. Wyatt has officiated multiple CanWest playoff series, including two bronze-medal games, as well as both the U17 Men and Women national championships, where he was assigned to the gold-medal games. Most recently, Wyatt was assigned as the CC in the 2026 CCAA Men's gold medal game. He has served as MABO president and is currently the MBOA Referee Supervisor. He has been a provincial clinician and evaluator for six years. Wyatt is a current educator and has a passion for assisting officials in their development.

CARRIERA LAMOUREUX

Carriera, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, officiates at the collegiate, national, and international levels. A recently licensed FIBA referee, she has worked numerous championship events, including multiple Canada West Championships, U SPORTS National Championships, Globl Jam Women’s Gold Medal Game, and FIBA Centrobasket Women’s Championship in Nicaragua. A former student-athlete at Algoma University, Carriera is passionate about serving the game with integrity, humility, and a commitment to continual growth. Beyond the court, she enjoys mentoring young officials and advocating for greater opportunities for women and Indigenous peoples in sport

RICK DEGAGNE (CAMP DIRECTOR)

Rick DeGagne is an active Canada West official, recently completing his 46th year of officiating university basketball. Throughout his distinguished career, Rick has been assigned to 17 National Championships, including 10 at the U SPORTS level. He also enjoyed a 15-year international officiating career, highlighted by his selection to numerous major tournaments/events worldwide, including the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

In Manitoba, Rick has served as a provincial clinician and evaluator for over 30 years and has contributed as a Referee Coach at 10 National Championships. A retired educator, Rick takes great pride in mentoring officials at all levels, helping them refine their skills and elevate their performance on the court.

Hall of Fame News: In Memory of Grant “Scooter” Alfonso

With great sadness, the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Basketball Manitoba share the news of the passing of Grant “Scooter” Alfonso.

Scooter was a fixture in Junior and Senior Men’s basketball throughout the 1950s,1960s and into the 1970s. He was, as they say, tough as nails and, at about 5’7”, continually took on much bigger opposition. During his time, he was considered one the most skilled players to play the point-guard position. A perennial all-star, he was not only a great playmaker but also a prolific scorer. He was a member of the Canadian Junior Men's Championship W.L.I. (Winnipeg Light Infantry) Team in 1953 and the Canadian Senior Men's National Championship St. Andrews Super Saints Team in 1972. He was named Rookie-of-the-Year in the Senior League with King's Best in 1954 and was an All-Star with the Kodiaks, Carlings, and IPAC. He won a silver medal at the first Canadian Winter Games in 1967 and was a 3-time tournament All-Star at the Canadian National Senior Tournaments. He was inducted into our Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985.

Grant was a successful businessman in Winnipeg for many years before moving to Kelowna, British Columbia, where he operated a cherry orchard and, not surprisingly, did much of the heavy work himself. He died in Kelowna this past week at age 93. Our sincere sympathies go out to his family, friends and teammates. To say Scooter was one of a kind would be a major understatement, he will be remembered, and he will be missed by many.

REMINDER: MiniBallers Announces 2026 Move Learn Play Summer Basketball Camps for Ages 3-12

MiniBallers has announced details for its 2026 Move.Learn.Play Summer Camp program, offering two weeks of basketball-themed fun for children ages 3 to 12 in Winnipeg.

The camps are designed for young athletes who have caught the basketball bug and are looking for an active, positive and fun summer experience. MiniBallers will offer programming that helps children have fun, stay active, build confidence and make new friends through basketball and recreation-based activities.

The 2026 camp schedule includes:

Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24, 2026

Monday, August 31 to Friday, September 4, 2026

Families can choose from full-week or single-day options, with both full-day and half-day registration available.

Camp options include:

Full Day: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Half Day AM: 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Half Day PM: 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Early drop-off at 8:00 a.m. and late pick-up until 5:00 p.m. are available at no additional charge.

The camps will feature basketball, recreation activities, outdoor play, water activities, and pizza and popsicle Fridays. MiniBallers notes that its programs have received more than 200 five-star reviews from families.
