Welcome to the 19th annual Basketball Manitoba NCAA March Madness Bracket Challenge! For the fifth year, we are excited to offer a women's pool option alongside the men's bracket, with the same cash prizes up for grabs. There is no cost to register for our pools, and they are open to any Manitoba resident to participate for a chance to win great prizes. The deadline to enter the respective pools is listed below.

The top 3 finishers in each pool (men's and women's) will receive from Basketball Manitoba...

1st Place - $400.00 cash prize
2nd Place - $200.00 cash prize
3rd Place - $100.00 cash prize

To be eligible to win one of the prizes below, you must be a resident of Manitoba and be or become a Basketball Manitoba email newsletter subscriber and follow Basketball Manitoba on Instagram to be eligible for the prizes.

There is no cost to enter this pool or to become an online subscriber or follower of Basketball Manitoba.

TIEBREAKER

If the overall points score is tied at the end of the tournament, the winner(s) will be determined using the combined score you gave in the national championship game.
The person picking the closest to this number will be given the win.

U SPORTS has announced a recap of the men's and women's basketball All-Canadian and All-Rookie Team selections revealed on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the All-Canadian Galas, highlighting several Manitoba-based and Manitoba-connected athletes recognized at the national level.

A new coaching award created in the memory of long-time coach Dennis Wilson has been created for 2026. Basketball Manitoba In-Service Day Skill Development Clinics – Ages 10-13 Set for Friday, March 20, 2026

Basketball Manitoba, in partnership with Sport Manitoba Performance, is offering a focused, high-energy series of basketball skill clinics designed to help young athletes improve their all-around game. Each 90-minute session will focus on key areas of basketball development — including shooting, ball handling, passing, scoring, and decision making — led by some of Manitoba’s most experienced coaches.

Small group, high-rep skill instruction
Proven drills used in elite development programs
Progressive skill building for all levels
Positive, confidence-building environment

These clinics are open to youth ages 10–13 and provide a great opportunity to sharpen skills, stay active, and learn proper techniques from certified coaches in a fun, encouraging atmosphere.

Clinic Date - Friday, March 20, 2026 (a common in-service date for many area school divisions)

Session Times:

8:45–10:15 AM – Ages 10–11: Skills (Shooting, Ball Handling & Passing)
10:30 AM–12:00 PM – Ages 10–11: Game Play (1v1, 2v2, 3v3 – Scoring & Decision Making)
12:30–2:00 PM – Ages 12–13: Skills (Shooting, Ball

Winnipeg’s Niyah Becker Selected to Senior Women’s National Team for FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifier

Canada Basketball has announced that Winnipeg’s Niyah Becker has been selected to represent Canada at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament, scheduled for March 11–17, 2026 in Istanbul, Turkiye.

Becker, a Winnipeg product and graduate of Wake Forest University, continues to build an impressive international resume as part of Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team. The selection represents another milestone for the Manitoba athlete, who has emerged as one of the province’s top basketball exports while continuing to represent Winnipeg on the global stage.

Currently playing professionally in Japan with the Aisin Wings of the Women’s Japan Basketball League, Becker joined the club after beginning her professional career in Europe following her collegiate career at Wake Forest. She previously played in Slovenia and Spain and recently competed in the EuroCup with Latvian powerhouse TTT Riga before making the move to Japan.

Becker’s impact has been felt quickly with the Wings, where she has become a key contributor alongside Japanese national team star Ramu Tokashiki. The team is coached by fellow Winnipegger Burke Toews, a longtime professional coach in Japan. The unique situation has brought two Manitoba basketball figures together overseas.

“Two Winnipeggers in Japan is very uncommon, let alone on the same team — what are the odds?” Becker said in a recent interview. “I think it shows that basketball is worldwide. It doesn’t matter where you come from, it can take you anywhere. It’s a really great representation for Winnipeg and Basketball Manitoba that two Winnipeggers are out in Japan.”

Known for her versatility, work ethic and mobility as a forward, Becker has quickly earned the trust of her coaching staff in Japan. Toews noted that Becker’s all-around ability and approach to the game have made her a strong fit for the team, highlighting her willingness to put in extra work and continually improve her game.

Following her collegiate career, Becker has steadily progressed through Canada’s national team system and was part of Canada’s bronze medal performance at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup. Her continued development at the professional level has helped earn her a spot on the roster for the upcoming World Cup qualifying tournament.

Canada will compete in the Turkiye Qualifier alongside host Turkiye, Hungary, Argentina, Japan and Australia. With Australia already qualified as the 2025 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup champion, the remaining three World Cup berths will be awarded to the highest-finishing teams following round-robin play.

Canada opens tournament play against host Turkiye on Wednesday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m. ET. All of Canada’s games will be broadcast live on TSN.

Canada enters the tournament ranked No. 7 in the latest FIBA World Rankings and is seeking its sixth consecutive appearance at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will take place in Berlin, Germany, this September.

Lily Cox Commits to CMU Blazers Women’s Basketball for 2026-27 MCAC Season

Canadian Mennonite University has announced the commitment of Winnipeg guard Lily Cox to the Blazers Women’s Basketball program for the 2026–27 MCAC Athletics season.

Cox, a 5’10” shooting guard from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, joins the program following a strong high school and provincial basketball career that has included representing Team Manitoba and competing with the Junior Wesmen program. Known for her speed, skill, and strong understanding of the game, Cox has developed into one of Manitoba’s emerging backcourt players.

At Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, Cox has been a key contributor to the Huskies program while also gaining valuable experience through provincial and club basketball competition. Her involvement with Team Manitoba has provided opportunities to compete against top athletes from across the country while continuing to refine her offensive and defensive skillset.

CMU Head Coach Sharlene Harding believes Cox’s playing style will translate well to the Blazers system.

“Lily is an outstanding basketball player with the speed, skill, and court sense that will make her seamlessly fit into the pace and style of play at CMU. Her tireless work ethic on the court is enviable and only enhances how coachable she is. Lily will be an amazing addition to Blazers Basketball.”

The commitment marks the first signing of the off-season for the Blazers Women’s Basketball program as the team prepares for the upcoming Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) season.

Cox will join the CMU Blazers roster in fall 2026 as the program continues building toward the 2026–27 MCAC campaign.

Basketball Manitoba has announced a virtual focus group series inviting women and girls (18+) involved in basketball to share their experiences and help shape the future of playing, coaching, officiating, and leadership in Manitoba.

The sessions are designed to gather feedback and lived experience that will help inform Basketball Manitoba’s Inclusion Strategy. Participants will have the opportunity to share what is working, what barriers still exist, and what changes would strengthen the sport experience for women and girls across the province.

All participants will be entered into a draw to win a pair of Winnipeg Sea Bears tickets.

REGISTER NOW: Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce it will be hosting a Spring Break High-Performance Basketball Camp from Monday, March 30 to Thursday, April 2, for boys and girls ages 11 to 18 at the Canada Games Sport for Life Centre (aka Sport Manitoba Courts).

Leading the camps will be the coaching staff and players from the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg. The camp registration cost is $135.00 per player. The deadline to register is FRIDAY, MARCH 27, at 4:00 pm or when the camp sells out. The camps have sold out in the last 5 years, so register now to avoid disappointment!

COACH BIOS:

Luke Klusa - University of Manitoba Women's Basketball Assistant Coach

Luke is a rising star in the Manitoba Basketball coaching community. Before he was a coach, he was a crucial member of the 2018/19 Vincent Massey Provincial championship team. He took his success as a player and has turned it into helping the basketball community at multiple levels. He currently serves as the Head Coach of the Pembina Trails Junior Varsity girls team and as an Assistant Coach with the University of Manitoba Women's Basketball team. In recognition of his dedication and leadership, Luke was recently named the recipient of the 2025 Jim Bulloch Coaching Award by Basketball Manitoba. Luke is dedicated to the growth and success of basketball in Manitoba.

Running the camp alongside Luke will be active University of Manitoba women's basketball players.

Megan Noonan - University of Winnipeg Women's Basketball Assistant Coach

Megan is a prominent figure in Manitoba's basketball community, having played for the Provincial Team four times and having a very successful five-year career with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, where she was a three-year co-captain and a Canada West All-Star. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology and a Bachelor of Education. As a coach, she led Fort Richmond Collegiate's varsity girls' team to a divisional championship in 2020 and received the MHSAA Coach of the Year award. Megan has also coached the U17 Female Provincial Team and is currently an assistant coach with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen and Director of Operations for the Winnipeg Sea Bears, contributing significantly to the development of basketball at all levels in Manitoba.

Keenan Benarroch - University of Manitoba Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

Keenan Benarroch has a decade of experience in basketball as both a player and coach. He played for the University of Manitoba Bisons from 2014 to 2017 and later became an assistant coach at the same university and for the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Women's team. Notably, he contributed to TMU's successful 2021–2022 season, achieving a 20–0 record and winning both OUA and U SPORTS National Championships. Keenan is active in grassroots basketball, he recently was the head coach of the Manitoba 14U Provincial Boys team in the summer of 2025. He previously had served as Head Coach for the Downtown Toronto Centre for Performance and as an Apprentice Coach with the Ontario 15U Provincial Girls team in 2021. He also worked as a Video and Performance Analyst for Canada Basketball’s 3x3 Men’s National Team during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2020. Currently, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba and coaching the JV boys team at Fort Richmond Collegiate while assisting the University of Manitoba Bisons program.

Elijah Lostracco - University of Manitoba Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

Elijah Lostracco, has transitioned from a standout basketball player to an emerging coach. Starting at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School, he later played at Redeemer University, earning accolades like the All-Conference Rookie Team and Rookie of the Year. Transferring to the University of Manitoba, he graduated with a Bachelor of Kinesiology in 2023, leading the Bisons to a notable 18-2 record and the Canada West Final Four as team captain. In 2024, he joined the Jamestown Jackals in the North American Basketball Super League, enhancing his professional expertise. As a coach he has experience as an assistant coach for the 14U Provincial Boys team in the summer of 2025 as well as a full-time assistant coach with the Manitoba Bisons, he focuses on player development and recruitment, continuing to inspire future athletes with his commitment to the sport.

Braeden Floyd - University of Winnipeg Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

Braeden Floyd is an emerging coach in Manitoba's basketball scene, currently an assistant with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, focusing on player development and practice planning, video breakdown, and opponent scouting. His experience includes serving as an assistant coach for the Winnipeg Sea Bears in 2025, where he handled film coordination and player development, in addition to also being the head coach of the Glenlawn Junior Varsity Boys. Floyd is known for his detailed preparation, strong athlete relationships, and ability to translate high-level concepts into practical learning.

Peg City Basketball 2026 CBL Championship Series for 10U–13U Boys and Girls

Peg City Basketball has announced details for the 2026 Peg City Community Basketball League (CBL) Championship Series, set to take place from Friday, March 6 to Sunday, March 22, 2026. The championship run will feature the city’s top middle school club teams competing for titles across multiple age divisions.

As a Basketball Manitoba-sanctioned league, Peg City CBL continues to provide a structured and competitive development pathway for young athletes in Winnipeg. The championship series will showcase emerging talent from across the community as teams compete in high-intensity playoff brackets for the opportunity to capture a Peg City CBL championship.

Games will be played at Dakota Fieldhouse, Sport Manitoba Courts, and the Katherine Friesen Campus throughout the three-week championship window. Admission to all games is free, providing families, friends, and community members the opportunity to attend and support local youth basketball.

The 2026 Peg City CBL Championships will feature the following divisions:

All championship brackets will be seeded using the Peg City Power Ranking Formula, which evaluates team performance throughout the season to determine playoff placement.

Peg City Basketball is reminding all participants and spectators that maintaining a positive and respectful environment remains a priority throughout the championship series. The organization’s Code of Conduct applies to all players, coaches, parents, and spectators attending the events.

Players are expected to respect teammates, opponents, referees, and spectators at all times. Coaches are asked to lead by example, maintain composure, and focus on positive reinforcement while respecting officials’ decisions. Parents and spectators are encouraged to support all athletes in a positive manner, as inappropriate language or behaviour will not be tolerated.

Attendees are also reminded to follow all facility guidelines at each venue. Outside food and drinks are not permitted, and all participants and spectators are asked to help keep facilities clean by disposing of garbage and leaving seating areas tidy following games.

Peg City Basketball invites the community to come out and experience a series of exciting championship weekends while supporting the next generation of basketball talent in Winnipeg.

Wheelchair Basketball School Program Opportunity with Basketball Manitoba; "Get The Ball Rolling"

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce its Wheelchair Basketball Schools Program, following the recent integration of Basketball Manitoba and Wheelchair Basketball operations.

The program is a school-based experience designed to raise awareness, build understanding, and generate excitement for wheelchair basketball across Manitoba. The program provides students with a meaningful, hands-on introduction to the sport while reinforcing inclusion, teamwork, coordination, and sportsmanship.

Participating schools host a wheelchair basketball experience delivered during regular physical education classes or designated lunch periods. Basketball Manitoba supplies and delivers all required equipment, including sport wheelchairs, ensuring the program is fully accessible and delivered to a high standard with minimal logistical burden on schools.

The program is supported and launched by Joey Johnson, who plays a key role in introducing the sport to students and staff.

About Joey Johnson

Joey Johnson (pictured above, centre) is one of the most accomplished wheelchair basketball athletes in the world and a proud Manitoba product. A graduate of Lorette Collegiate, Joey was diagnosed at age eight with a degenerative hip disease that prevented him from participating in able-bodied sports. That challenge opened the door to wheelchair basketball, where he went on to build an elite international career.

Joey attended the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, earning All-American honours and leading his team to three National Championships in the late 1990s. Internationally, he represented Canada at five Paralympic Games, winning Gold Medals in 2000, 2004, and 2012, along with a Silver Medal in 2008. He also captured Gold at the 2006 World Championships and the 1997 Junior World Championships.

At the provincial level, Joey represented Manitoba at the club and provincial team levels for 19 consecutive years. Professionally, he competed in Australia and across Europe, winning numerous international titles and serving as both a player and player-coach.

In recognition of his impact on the sport, Joey has been inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame (2013), the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (2016), and the Canada Basketball Hall of Fame (2023). Ella Castres Commits to Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Basketball for 2026-27 Canada West Season

At a young age, Ella Castres was introduced to basketball by competing against her brother — four years her senior — and the boys in the open gym.

"So, all the guys were bigger than me," Castres said, "but that didn't really stop me at all."

Castres, a provincial team combo guard and a leader on the Maples Marauders varsity girls, has committed to Alyssa Cox and the Winnipeg Wesmen as the latest member of the 2026 recruiting class.

Castres is no stranger to taking on challenges in her development as a basketball player. From those early years against the boys to playing on her first club team with girls as much as four years older than her to suiting up for Manitoba at last summer's Canada Games, Castres hasn't shied away from taking on a tough check.

"When I was four, I went to one of my brother's basketball practices and automatically I just loved it," she said. "I would say at the age of eight I started playing with the boys' (club) team and then eventually we made a girls team, which was four years older than me. So, I was still playing up. And ever since I've been playing up, my whole life."

Castres, who played Junior Wesmen under former UW star Robyn Belanger, has played in the Winnipeg Spirt, Attack, Alliance and Evolve club systems and, last year, played along side Wesmen guard Avneet Kainth at Maples.

In addition to Boulanger and Kainth, Castres is also well familiar with freshmen Jennifer Edwards and Eliana Stark, something that will make her landing at the university level that much smoother.

"I feel more welcomed and I'm really comfortable with them already, so it's gonna feel like another day just going into the gym," she said.

Castres found her love of basketball at an early age and her journey has led her to the university she always hoped would come calling when the time to commit came along.

For the first year we were trying (Jr. Wesmen) out and I was like, I wanna go to the Wesmen," she said. "It's my number one place where I want to go.

"I would even say last year I was like, I know I'm going to go here, but I'm still gonna be open to options. I was open to all the options, but I just knew the Wesmen is my first choice."

In Castres, Coach Cox believes she's landed a talented all-round player who can make an impact in a variety of ways.

"Ella's high basketball IQ and offensive flare will bring an immediate impact to our team on the court," Cox said. "She has a wealth of high-level playing experience and we are excited to help her take her game to the next level. Ella rounds out an exceptional recruiting class for us and I'm really excited to see how this group grows together and impacts the culture of our program."

For her part, Castres appreciated Cox's efforts on the recruiting trail, having been a target of the Wesmen coach long before her senior year of high school.

"I love her. She made a connection really early in my high school career, so I've known her for forever, I feel like. She always comes to my games whenever she can. She does really put in an effort, and that's what I appreciate the most of her."

2026 Manitoba Provincial Team ID Camp For Non-Winnipeg Residents Set for Mar 29 & April 17 for 14U, 15U & 17U Male and Female

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce details on the 2026 Manitoba Provincial Team Identification Camps for the upcoming summer.

Identification Camp Dates and Locations

Winnipeg Based Identification Camp: Sunday, March 29, 2026, Sport For Life Centre (145 Pacific Ave, Winnipeg, MB
Brandon Based Identification Camp: Friday, April 17, 2026, Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School (1930 1st St, Brandon, MB)

Important Note

These Identification Camps are not the formal tryouts for the Manitoba Provincial Team program. They are identification opportunities for athletes living outside of Winnipeg, and are being offered to provide athletes with additional consideration from Provincial Team Coaches who will be present.

The formal Manitoba Provincial Team Tryouts will occur May 8-10, 2026, at the Sport Manitoba Courts in Winnipeg. The May tryouts are open to any Manitoba resident who meets the age requirements. Provincial Team Tryout details will be announced in early spring.

2026 Provincial Team Program Overview

The 2026 Manitoba Provincial Team Program will comprise six teams. The 15U and 17U teams will compete at the Canada Basketball National Championships. The 14U Male and Female teams are Developmental Provincial Teams and will participate in multiple tournaments throughout the summer.

National Championships

The Canada Basketball 15U and 17U National Championships will run August 3-8, 2026, and feature teams representing each of the ten provinces across Canada. The 15U and 17U female competitions will be held in Sherbrooke, QC, while the 15U and 17U male tournaments will be hosted in Regina, SK.

Selection Process and Summer Plans

Teams will be selected from the open tryouts in May. Any Manitoba resident who fits the age categories is eligible and welcome to try out. Once teams are selected, the provincial teams will train and compete through June and July, leading into their respective summer competition schedules.

The Manitoba Provincial Team Program is the premier player and coach development program in the province. The program attracts top players and coaches to represent Manitoba at national and international events. Ages 14U, 15U and 17U are offered to both male and female players, and the program operates annually from May through August.

Registration and Check-In

Registration: Online preregistration is required (links below)
Check-in: On-site check-in will begin 20 minutes prior to the first session per age category. Players should arrive dressed and ready to play.
Bring a basketball: Players are asked to bring their own basketball (Girls size 6, Boys size 7)

All eligible players must fit into one of the age divisions below and have been a resident of Manitoba on or before February 1, 2026.

Welcome to the Manitoba High School 3x3 Basketball Championships!

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the return of the Manitoba High School 3x3 Championships! The event will occur on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Sport Manitoba Courts (aka Canada Games Sport for Life Centre). It will be open to high school basketball teams from around Manitoba at the AAAA, AAA, and A/AA classification levels. A co-ed wheelchair basketball division will be added for up to 4 teams in 2026.

To be eligible to play, the player must attend the high school they represent academically. Up to 10 indoor basketball courts will be set up inside the centre for the event. The divisions will be capped at 10 teams per division (4 at the wheelchair level). We anticipate the event will sell out, so register your 4-person team when registration opens!

Rules:
- Game Length: Games will be played using a 20-minute running time clock and end with the leading score team at the time OR when the first team scores 21 points.
- Shot Clock: The referee will manage a virtual shot clock of 30 seconds.
- Official Game Ball: Wilson FIBA 3x3 Basketball for all divisions (shown to the right).
- Referees: MABO Certified officials will staff the event.
Prizes and Special Events:

All participants will receive a Basketball Manitoba t-shirt.
The Winnipeg Sea Bears will be on site with their activation team.

Parking & Transit: Due to limited parking downtown, we suggest teams consider carpooling to maximize available spaces for the event. Please be aware of and respect all parking restriction signs, including those in the underground parking lot, that are noted "Reserved".

PAID LOTS: Paid underground parking for $2.50 per hour (up to $18 per day) is available under the Sport Manitoba facility. All other paid lots in the area require payment, as noted at each lot. See the parking maps below.

REMINDER: Team Mayhem Basketball Club Spring Break Camp March 30–April 2, 2026

Team Mayhem Basketball Club has announced its 2026 Spring Break Basketball Camp, a four-day evening program designed for athletes focused on improving fundamentals, confidence, and overall game performance.

The camp will emphasize teaching the game the right way, with structured instruction targeting footwork, ball control, decision-making, and game understanding. The program is intended to help players leave the gym more prepared and more confident in their abilities.

Throughout the camp, athletes will work on:

Ball handling and dribbling under control
Shooting mechanics and scoring confidence
Footwork and agility development
Creating space and attacking off the dribble
Layups and finishing at the rim
Defensive positioning and intensity
Game situations and 1-on-1 skill development
Court awareness and decision-making

Each session will be recorded, with participants receiving access to the footage to support continued development beyond the camp environment.

Dates: Monday, March 30 to Thursday, April 2, 2026

In Memory of Robert (Bob) Fallis

It is with sadness that we share the passing of Robert (Bob) Fallis on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the age of 80.

Bob dedicated his life to the community. An educator with the Winnipeg School Division, he spent years teaching high school and making a difference for countless students. In the basketball community, Bob was equally well known as a long-time MABO referee in the Winnipeg School Division and as the convener of the annual Winnipeg Invitational Tournament. He gave his time, his steady presence, and his love of the game to generations of athletes, coaches, and officials.

Bob will be remembered by his daughters, Jennifer and Kristen (Scott), and his granddaughter Anna, along with extended family and many friends.

In keeping with Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pine Ridge later this spring, with details to follow.

Condolences to the Fallis family and all who are grieving this loss. The family has also shared their gratitude to the ICU staff at St. Boniface General Hospital for their compassionate care during Bob’s illness.

Wesmen Mike Raimbault Named Canada West Coach of the Year; Bobcats Munroop Gill Earns CW Rookie of the Year

Canada West has announced that Winnipeg Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault has been named the 2025-26 Canada West Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year, recognizing another high-level season for one of the conference’s most consistent programs.

Raimbault, in his 15th season leading the Wesmen, guided Winnipeg to a second straight 16-win Canada West campaign and a second straight 24-win season overall. Under his leadership, the Wesmen ranked among the top teams nationally in key performance areas, including assists per game, field goal percentage, and net efficiency. Over the past four seasons, Winnipeg’s 62 Canada West wins rank second in the conference.

Canada West has announced Brandon Bobcats guard Munroop Gill as the 2025-26 Rookie of the Year after a standout first season. Gill averaged 17.9 points per game while shooting 54.5 percent from the field and over 40 percent from three-point range, placing him among the conference leaders in multiple scoring categories.
