  • Mike is the only reason we watched this frakkin’ show in the first place, and I’m so very glad we did. We recorded our final episode about three weeks ago, and I’ve been missing the Galactica crew something fierce. But I miss our bi-weekly bullshit sessions about them even more. None of this would’ve happened without Mike’s love of Galactica.
• Next, thanks to our fantastic guest hosts, Joe Drew and Anna Miura. Both of them were a delight to have on throughout our run, and each added something different to our weekly conversations.

• I went digging for more thoughts about Cally’s whole deal, and her relationship with the Chief specifically, because I feel she’s a character who could’ve been good but kept getting stuck in bad plots/situations. If your very worst fear is being forgotten, you probably shouldn’t sacrifice yourself in a forgettable episode of Galactica.

• This time on BSG, a good premise meets a bad plot, as Kat gains some unnecessary backstory but loses her life. And meanwhile, on the Cylon Basestar, D’Anna tests the limits of life and death.

In the beginning … Admiral Adama made bad choices. Turns out, he’s still making bad choices.

• This time on BSG, Lt. Daniel “Bulldog” Novacek just happens to escape a Cylon prison and just happens to find Galactica out in the middle of space and there’s nothing suspicious about that at all.
• In our analysis, Pat is pretty sure the Cylons didn’t give a frak about Bulldog’s mission.

In defense of the episode’s timeline, writer David Eick said, “We actually did check it, and there was nothing in the show’s continuity that makes events in “Hero” inconsistent. We also all really liked the idea that Adama had been assigned to the Galactica as a punishment, which is why we did it.”
• Relatedly, I’m not sure whether we’ve defined the term “retcon” before, so here you go just in case.
• “The Defector” is a very good Ron Moore-written episode of Star Trek: TNG that does a lot of the same things you see in “Hero” … and it does them better.
• Listen up, this might be the most important observation we have about this episode: the painting of President Baltar has square corners. WHERE’S THE CONSISTENCY, GALACTICA?
• You aren’t gonna see Lt. Novacek again, so … glad we bothered to introduce that character I guess?

You give people back their spaceships, and they immediately start airlocking each other.

• This time on BSG, a perfectly legal death squad takes it upon themselves to “deal with” the remaining New Caprican collaborators. Also, Gaius gets a shirt.

• It doesn’t seem like anyone’s following these guidelines when it comes to easing Starbuck back into real life. While Saul didn’t go through exactly the same thing, he could also use some care.
• 7 frakkin’ pounds, Mike. That’s all that Lee lost.
• It took us about three minutes to remember Seelix‘s name, and then another three minutes to all be on the same page about who she was. Be happy that Pat cut that audio. Also, Seelix is the worst.
• Pat was right. Behold: the chaise longue. Gaius’s is pretty fancy.

• According to this episode’s accompanying SCI-FI podcast, it seems like it’s actually Head Six in that “Sign it!” scene … Pat’s take on it seems better.

• Man, it’s been A WEEK for politics, huh? I hope you enjoyed us yelling at each other about the state of our country, spurred on by Gaius Baltar’s shitty election tactics, Laura Roslin’s willingness to match him, and Adama’s (ohmygods misplaced) faith in the electorate.
• Is it ironic that Cally, who wanted to be a dentist, gets her jaw wired shut in this episode? Not a great place from which to start a relationship, Cally.
• The fleet’s population has been inconsistent throughout the second season (and likely dipped quite a bit here), but we get some pretty firm numbers near the end of the episode.
• Do you think Sharon knew about Cavil, or not? It doesn’t especially matter, but it’s a small bit that would give more insight into Sharon’s current mental state.
• As Mike says, “hope-y change-y shit.” Personally, I find Gaius to be less “hope-y change-y” here and more “let’s take the easy way out.” Like Ron Moore says, “Democracies are about choices, some made intelligently and thoughtfully, and some not so much.”

If you were looking forward to Lee Adama meaningfully dealing with his PTSD while solving a murder mystery and examining the gray areas of morality, boy howdy is this episode going to disappoint you.

No witty intro this time. Instead, a disclaimer: This episode confronts some woman-centric issues pretty head-on, and we are three dudes. We do our best to discuss these issues thoughtfully and considerately (though also with sarcasm and yelling, because it’s us).

• Apparently, that scene of Adama drowning the Hybrid was a bit much for many working on Galactica, but Ron Moore and David Eick fought to keep it in.

• This is such a weird episode, y’all. Apparently, the episode was originally called “Secrets and Lies” and took itself more seriously. That probably would’ve been better.
• This episode was pushed in front of the next one (“Hand of God”), because the staff thought Adama’s actions and Ellen’s arrival neatly tied in to Leoben’s warning. However, that requires the audience to buy that Leoben told the truth…
• Ellen and Saul seem like a pretty classic example of co-dependency, right down to Saul’s alcoholism. Hopefully we’ll understand more about how they got here later.
• If you’re watching along with us for the first time, do yourself a favor and don’t Google anything about Ellen Tigh. Trust me on this one.

It’s all funerals, flashbacks, falling, and frak-ups in this fifth episode of Battlestar Bros.

• This time on BSG, Kara messes up. And then messes up again. And then again. And yeah, the episode’s as repetitive and poorly paced as this summary.
• In our analysis, Pat forgives the episode’s flaws because Edward James Olmos is…very good.
• Matt prays to the one true God for a Breakfast Club-style Nugget spin-off.
• Mike gets to watch Starbuck shoot things, which is really what it’s all about.

Some observations and links of note:

• It appears Zak Adama does not come back as a Cylon, to the disappointment of us all. I don’t think that’s a spoiler as, if it was really going to happen, Mike would have given it away when we were recording.
• Did you know that Nuggets are actually called Nuggets in real life? I didn’t until I looked it up.
• The A.V. Club agrees with us that Act of Contrition is a relatively weak entry in the series. So we’re in good critical company, at least? You might not want to read that entire article yet, because there are spoilers for the next episode (which is very, very good).
• From a cursory look back, it seems the flags in the funeral scenes do not have their corners cut off. Which is a travesty and a lost chance at world-building.
• One last fun tidbit from a fan forum, which may or may not be true: “I remember an interview where Ronald Moore was told by network execs to have more upbeat, happy moments on the show. The hangar party was his response.”

• You can decide for yourself whether Zarek’s nonsense relates to the real Bastille Day and whether episodes of Galactica should be named after real-world events. I still think it’s akin to watching an episode of Avatar: the Last Airbender titled Fourth of July, but I’m obliged to point out that Pat and Mike disagree.
• As we said in the episode, Richard Hatch died earlier this year, which sucks. From what I’ve read, he really loved Battlestar and was a good guy. He also got a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as original recipe Apollo, which pushes me toward wanting to watch the original series sometime. Zarek will pop up again soon, if I remember correctly, and he’ll be much better to watch.
• You definitely won’t find a discussion of prison labor and how it might be tantamount to slavery/indentured servitude here, nosiree. Which also leads me to wonder if racism is a thing in Battlestar Galactica. If it is, it hasn’t popped up yet? This is why Roslin was as concerned about Freedom Bucks as she was.
• Let me save you the trouble of Googling that “bird refuge occupation” Mike referred to in the episode.
• Please let us know if you want a “Do You Hear the Cylons Sing?” t-shirt. Pat can figure out how to make them, I’m sure.

• Here’s a picture of James Callis in Bridget Jones’s Diary, in which he is wonderful. Watch it; you’ll love him.
• Grace Park’s primary acting credit before BSG is a show called Edgemont, which might be decent? It’s got a 6.6/10 on IMDb. Gonna see if I can track it down.
• Regarding that Adama speech about the line between military/police…
• I mentioned the wrong Zoom when Mike was talking about the Cylons. This is the guy I meant. The Flash’s continuity/naming is confusing.

• This time on BSG, the Colonial Fleet fights off human extinction every. 33. minutes. Which leads to the sleep deprivation and tension you’d expect.
