Match Preview: v Rochdale (H)

Walsall's 2026/27 Sky Bet League Two campaign continues on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Rochdale to the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.

THE SADDLERS

Walsall's unbeaten start to the league season continued last weekend as they and fellow strong-starters Exeter City played out a goalless draw at St James Park. The match seeing a handful of golden opportunities spurned by both sides.

Going into the game on the back of a two-all draw with Crewe Alexandra that saw Aaron Pressley grab his fourth and fifth goals of the campaign, the Saddlers once again showed plenty of defensive might, though would have been disappointed not to have taken all three points.

TEAM NEWS

Walsall have a few injury concerns, with the likes of Declan Skura, Rico Browne, Roman Dixon, and Alex Pattison among the walking wounded.

Head Coach Lee Grant expects Brown and Skura to be available for selection, but Dixon and Pattison remain sidelined as they look to return to fitness.

Harry Williams is also still out as he continues his steady recovery from an ACL injury.

THE OPPOSITION

Rochdale have endured a difficult start to their League Two campaign. After winning the National League Play-Offs last season, Dale fans would have hoped to see their team build upon their 106-points season when the season began just a few short weeks ago.

However, that has been far from the case, as they lost their opening three league games. as well as being knocked out of the Carabao Cup in Round One, after defeating Tranmere Rovers in the Preliminary Round.

Dale's only win in the league so far this season came at the expense of fellow strugglers Shrewsbury Town, as goals from Babajide Adeeko, Luke Hannant, and Jonny Smith saw them record a welcome win.

Making it four defeats in five league games, their most recent outing took place last weekend and saw Gillingham ease to victory by four goals to one.

FORM GUIDE

Walsall - WDWDD: The Saddlers are undefeated in the league so far this season, and will be looking to end a run of two consecutive draws when they welcome the Dale to town this weekend.

Rochdale - LLLWL: The Dale have struggled to find their feet so far this season. Winning just one of their opening five league games, they're in dire need of a win.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Walsall and Rochdale have met on sixty-nine previous occasions, and it's the Saddlers who are on the back foot having secured just twenty-four victories compared to Rochdale's twenty-eight.

There have also been seventeen draws over the history of the fixture, a history which began at Spotland Stadium on Saturday, 24th December 1921, and saw the Dale ease to a more than comfortable seven-nil Division Three (North) win.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent competitive clash, which was also in League Two, took place at Dale's Crown Oil Arena on Friday, 7th April 2023 and saw the home side secure the win 4-2.

Walsall got the first goal of the game shortly after the halfway point in the first-half as Jamille Matt opened his account for the season with a finish from close range.

Sadly for the Saddlers, they were unable to hold onto their lead for long, as veteran forward Ian Henderson levelled the scores a couple of minutes before half-time.

And Rochdale weren't done there, as Danny Lloyd went on to put his team ahead with a close-range finish after Owen Evans had produced a fine save to deny Odoh, only for Lloyd to tap it in.

Walsall got themselves back on level terms with just six minutes of the second-half played as Tom Knowles capitalised upon a loose ball to grab his fifth goal of the season.

The Saddlers were soon behind again as, a few minutes after having a goal chalked off for a foul in the build-up, the home side put themselves back ahead with Max Taylor getting the better of Owens in the Walsall goal.

Rochdale's determination to at least try and escape the bottom two before the end of the season bore its ugly head once again as Ethan Brierley went on to double his side's lead eleven minutes into the second forty-five, Owen Evans unable to thwart his advances.

PLAYED FOR BOTH

Many players have played in the red of Walsall and blue of Rochdale, with the likes of Richard O'Donnell, Olly Lancashire, Dean Holden, Liam Dickinson, and Donervon Daniels all featuring.

MATCH OFFICIALS

Jamie O'Connor who is based in Derbyshire will take charge of the match with Marc Wilson and James Wilson being named as assistant referees, whilst Matthew Parry has been selected as Fourth Official.

Last season, O'Connor took charge of 32 games across a variety of competitions, where he issued 115 cautions, 6 red cards, and awarded eight penalties.

Lee Grant Offers Ronan Maher Update as Midfielder Left Out of Walsall Squad

Walsall Head Coach Lee Grant has confirmed that he is hoping to secure a loan for midfielder Ronan Maher after the 21-year-old wasn't named in the team's 25-man squad.

As we reported earlier, Maher missed the Saddlers' pre-season through injury but was able to regain fitness to be named on the bench for the Saddlers' recent draw away to Crewe Alexandra.

Speaking via the Express & Star, Grant said: "With Ronan, we’ve got a lot of good players in the building.

"Ronan has worked really hard across pre-season and I think he’s a really talented young player, but for him now, it’s important that he’s getting an opportunity to show that week in, week out.

"He’s not going to get that opportunity in terms of being part of our squad week in, week out, so the plan has to be for Ronan to go and get games.

"We’re working with him, we’re working with his people to try and make sure that happens.

"We’ll have to wait and see, but hopefully something materialises that can be of benefit to him and his next steps."

The Club has confirmed that its events department has undergone a rebrand and will now be known as Events at Walsall Football Club.

Confusion as Ronan Maher Omitted from Walsall Squad List

Mystery surrounds the future of Walsall midfielder Ronan Maher after he was seemingly omitted from the club's confirmed squad list following the close of the summer Transfer Window last week.

21-year-old Maher, who missed much of pre-season with an injury, recently returned to the fold when he was an unused substitute for the Saddlers' two-all draw with Crewe Alexandra at the beginning of the month.

A product of the Saddlers' academy after joining the club from West Bromwich Albion in 2016, Maher spent part of last season on loan to Tamworth as he sought to secure first-team football and is often seen as a wasted prospect as he sits on the sidelines in favour of other players.

Published on the EFL's website, the list contains all the names of clubs in the Championship, League One, and League Two's first-team squads, as well as registered Under-21s, with Maher not currently featuring on either list.

Walsall CEO Ben Sadler recently responded to fans' queries on the subject, confirming that Ronan 'wasn’t selected to be included on the squad list', but he has yet to offer further clarification on his status at WS1.

Walsall Introduce Matchday Programme Pre-Order Initiative

The Club has announced plans to open a new pre-order window for matchday programmes for the remainder of the ongoing 2026/27 season.

The matchday programme, entitled Saddlers Shout, has continued to be an ever-present part of our matchday experience. With high demand already shown across the Saddlers' opening three home games, club officials have introduced a new initiative to give every supporter the chance to guarantee their copy for each remaining home fixture at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on a game-by-game basis.

Beginning with this Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Rochdale, supporters have until midday on Thursday, 10th September to pre-order their copy via the Online Store, with the option to collect on matchday via the Club Shop or have it delivered by post.

Please note that supporters who opt to collect on matchday will need to quote their name and order number to a member of staff. Those who opt to have their programme delivered are unlikely to receive it before matchday, as physical copies tend to arrive at the club as early as 24 hours prior to each fixture.

Lee Grant Nominated for August's Manager of the Month Award

Walsall Head Coach Lee Grant has been named among the nominees for the Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month award for August.

The Saddlers came through the first month of the 2026/27 season unbeaten with two victories and a draw to their name, keeping two clean sheets in the process in what has been a positive start to life under Grant at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.

The gaffer is facing some stiff competition as several other sides also enjoyed strong starts to the new campaign, and you can find details of his competition below.

Dean Brennan (Barnet) :Barnet narrowly missed the play-offs last season, yet the excitement of their thrilling run under Brennan has carried over, integrating new players into their attacking style with eight goals and seven points from three unbeaten games.

Danny Cowley (Colchester United): Slow starts have hampered Colchester’s promotion push in recent seasons. Cowley rectified that this August with positive substitutions bringing late goals in wins over Oldham and Rochdale in a haul of seven points from a possible nine.

Scott Lindsey (York City): Taking over from the manager who brought their side back into the EFL was not an easy task, but Lindsey made an immediate positive impression on the York fans by leading them to seven points from three unbeaten August fixtures.

The Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel comprises former Barnsley manager Danny Wilson, Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman and Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies. The winner will be announced on Friday, 11th September.

Walsall Under-18s were back in action on Tuesday morning as they made their way to Salford Sports Village and took on Salford City Under-18s in their latest EFL Youth Alliance - North outing of the season.

Looking to build upon their superb 3-1 victory over Rotherham United at the weekend, the young Saddlers were in buoyant mood as they hoped to continue their recent spell of form.

Walsall wasted no time in finding the back of the young Ammies' net when Ethan Khan gave his side the lead with just two minutes on the clock. A superb start for the youngsters who looked to have turned a corner following a slow start to the campaign.

Their fast-paced opening didn't end there, as, with eleven minutes played, young professional Stan Straw, who continues to build fitness following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, doubled Walsall's lead with a well-placed header from a corner kick across the box.

There were no further goals in the game as the Saddlers went on to secure their second win in three days, with their next outing taking place at the weekend as they welcome Oldham Athletic to Ray Hall Lane.

Ticket News: v Tranmere Rovers (A)

Tickets for the Saddlers' Sky Bet League Two trip to Tranmere Rovers, on Saturday, 26th September, are now on sale to Season Ticket Holders.

The Saddlers have been issued with an initial allocation of 847 tickets for the fixture at Prenton Park, including three pairs of wheelchair and carer tickets.

Tranmere have also informed us that away supporters will be seated in the Cowshed Stand, whilst the wheelchair bays are located in the home end of the stadium.

Any unsold tickets will be available to purchase on the day from the matchday ticket booth (to the left of the club shop) with a £2 price increase in place, whilst any collections can be picked up from inside the club shop itself.

Parking is available at £6 via Tranmere's ticket website, here, and supporters must book in advance and register an account when doing so. In addition, given the surrounding areas are restricted to residential permit holders, supporters are advised to not park in those areas.

Season Ticket Holders will be able to purchase up to two tickets from 9.00am on Monday. Tickets will then go on sale to Members who will be able to purchase one ticket from 9.00am on Wednesday, 9th September before they go on general sale at 9.00am on Friday, 11th September.
